Very easy yet very boring
Mr patterson is very easy if you attend class. He seemingly bases his entire grade scale on it. He is extremely helpfull if you need to talk to him about anything. I would highly suggest this teacher.
He's very interesting. He's unique, and full of knowledge. Very helpful and friendly, a great conversationalist. I highly recomend this professor b/c you don't just learn the curriculum, you learn about life.
This guy is a trip. He'll entertain you from day one. I highly recommend this guy. Although he is very picky about how you write your papers, he is a great professor. Lots of laughs.
Quite possibly the coolest guy alive. He is one of the most interesting people Ive ever met. He teaches you more about life than anything. Everyone should take him, if not your missing out.
thus sums up his class i got A's both semesters but he would give you a 50 on one paper and then give u 100 on another. He so unorganized and unpredictable. get another teacher
Don't take his class he is so picky about little things in your writting and he doesn't make himself clear on what he wants.
He's difficult
The 1st 3 wks of class we talked about was Jack the Ripper (no relevance to 1200). It's ptless to buy the texts bc we didnt open the one at all. The exam we had to memorize 70some rules word 4 word. Grades the 1st paper hard + then hands out A's just bc
He talks about things that do not relate to english at all. I don't like him b/c I bought that damn book and we did not even crack the thing open. He is also boring as hell, if you get him drop him. He should be fired!!!
This man is stange. He will make you laugh but very unpredictable. Grades hard and doesn't give any help. If you're up to doing work and hard grading take him. he is def funny. Loves to wear moccasions (the shoe).

He is extremely strange... but he is funny. He doesn't really teach he just sits there and tells stories the entire time. He does check attendance and is very strict about it. Just read what he asks you to read, come to class, and do the papers.
Didn't like the class. It was boring and I fell asleep a lot.
He grades very hard but as long as you attend class everytime, when he actually holds class, and do what he says for the final you'll get an A. I got Ds and Fs on all the papers and an A in the class. He is just very strict about attendence.

Weird.Not clear on assignments and changes due dates a lot.Only allows 2 absences if you have him 2 days a week.Then you go down a letter grade.He's very confusing and class has nothing to do with the papers you must write.

BY FAR THE WORST INSTRUCTOR AT ECU! The stubborn, old guy is very vague and unclear. He is extremely disorganized and doesn't care about the students. I highly discourage anyone to study under him!!!
Grades harsh, doesn't teach but tells stories about his life, very boring.
Made us computerize a New Bern census record from the late 1800's, early 1900's that was handwritten because he thought it was inaccurate. Remember, this is business communication class, not census record editing.
Patterson grades HARSH on attendance, but is overall one of the best teachers I've ever had at ECU. If you plan on attending ALL classes, doing the work, but want an A without studying, this is your class. I HAD HIM TWICE, AND I LOVE HIM.
Worst man on the planet looks like a crippeled robot. Got an A in the course but failed because i had 1 to many absences when all it was is i forgot to sign the attendance sheet. Dont take him he talks about nonsense like ivory dildos and things like that
he has mood swings, more like pms. If u want to learn anything about english, then take another professor. but if u want to hear about Patterson's non-existant girlfriends and how he is the smartest man alive every single day of class then take him.
He is strange and rambles on a lot about random issues, but I think he genuinly trys to help us out. He's a little bit tough on grading the papers, but he cancels class a lot, sometimes for a week at a time. Overall he's not bad.
very unclear about assignments. no help what so ever and no explantions of anything. the man is horney and all he talks about is sex and how things are realated to that i hated this class and counted the days till it was over do not do not take this course
He has a very strict attendance policy, but he never lectures about anything. He doesn't go by the syllabus at all, so you never know when assignments are due, but if you ask him, he will tell you. Very amusing in class.. *easy A as long as you go to class and turn your assignments in on time*
Strange old man on a power trip to recapture his youth. Rambles on about used condoms and I swear he has terrets. Very strict on attendance... dont come in even 2 minutes late! Grades papers very harshly. He is so boring and random. Do not take his class!!!
Honestly I think that Mr. Patterson is a great man. He has so much knowledge stuck up there in his head and just wants to share it with the world! Yes, he's a little unclear and takes forever to grade things and doesn't go by the syllabus at all, oh well. I think he knows what he's talking about.
Patterson really lives in another world, one that I don't ever want to visit. He rambles and rambles and rambles on about his life. His projects are God-like and nearly require a PhD to complete. Every day before his class I think about jumping off a bridge. Avoid the class please and save yourself.

This will be the funnyest class u will ever have at ECU. He is a very strange man and never talks about anything that is important or related to english what-so-ever. GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY. evern though u wil learn nothing
He is very strange in a good way. He has extra insight on life that give you ideas on what to write about. He is one of the COOLEST teachers I've had since I've been in college! I took his class for all of my english courses! Plus he doesn't have a final and loves to cancel class!! lol =D
everything u read about him is completly true. He is one strange old man but his class is pretty easy. Not only that but he cancles class kinda a lot. He probably cancled class 5-7 times this past semester. He's easy and he'll always make ya laugh.
He's quite a strange guy, but very nice. He rambles a lot about non English related matters, but he cancels class half the time. He didn't grade the papers hard after the first one and the journal writing is an easy 100 (15% of your grade). I took him once and I'm taking him again.
Patterson, what a man. Great class, kind of 'stoney' man if you know whta I mean. He makes you write a letter to yourself and promises to send it to you in 10 years, even if he dies,(if the mailing add. is still the same as the one you give him) go to class, and have fun listening to his stories

This man really is a genius. Very insightful, and really wants you to do things that mean something in his english class. I really enjoyed him as an instructor. Seems to get a bad rep for no reason. Takes attendance every class, but I really enjoyed going to class and listening to his stories!
I love how people hate this teacher because he's not "professional" or he "smells". Yeah, you're top grade college material. Get used to having weird professors in college. This guy is incredibly smart and can be helpful when you ask. Don't expect everything to be served to you. This is COLLEGE. He's a very funny and genuine guy.

He is so funny, and make sure you read his assignments even though he doesn't check them, it helps with the essays. He talks about the most random things in class but he is really smart. I hated that he took attendance EVERY class.
He is one of the few professors out there that actually cares about his students. Great guy. Yeah he rambles and wastes a lot of time, but he's incredibly easy (with the exception of the geneology project) and cancels class fairly often. I would take him again for English if I ever take any more English classes. (And he's such a cutie. haha)

Imagine the worst teacher, with the worst assignments ever...John H. Patterson, in the flesh. He smells, hes vague with specifications of assignments, makes you buy a million things, makes you tape record your feelings and his. Hes a nut...oh yeah, 109 page syllabus that YOU have to print. Possibly the worst ever.
Lousy class, his assignments are very unclear. The geneology project is a ton of work. Journals are taken up a couple times a semester, each of them have to have at least 4000 words. You have to buy blank cassettes for him every time you turn in a paper. The syllabus is over 100 pages and you have to print it.
Awful class, his assignments are extremly unclear and if you write him an e-mail with one grammatical error, he wont respond. Syllabus is 100+ pages...the geneolgoy project is a nightmare...do not take him!
He isn't clear on his assignments, and yes the syllabus is extremely long, but you don't have to print ALL of it...only 3 assignments, only have to buy one cassette for ALL assignments, but as long as you go to class and read the examples that he sends you, you can pass!

Yes John is a little crazy but aren't we all a little off... the things he says are wayyy outta left field but he makes the class interesting!! I loved him! He trys to get to know his students on a personal level which I have learned alot of professors do not! He is just a cool chill guy!!! Just do the work and go to his class!

Very easy class for the most part. I ended up with a B and I HATE english. Do not buy the book it is a waste of money. He usually cancels class on Friday which is great! You have to keep a journal but he doesn't really check it as long as you have enough to make it look like you have completed it. He is a CRAZYYYYYY man and the lectures are pointle
This class was really easy, but he is REALLY unclear about all of his papers. He grades unfairly and is completely out of it. I would not recommend him to anyone.
where do i start..... this guys crazy.. he cracks me up in class... but in all honestly, didnt like the class at all.... he kinda leaves you hanging... I mean i giess if you do the work and all its not so hard, but for me it was really difficult.
Crazy.. Only one word needed..crazy! His oddness and insane remarks are entertaining until the grades come around. I couldn't guess what my final grade is going to be- HE HAS NONE OF MY GRADES RECORDED! I asked him for the grades on my first 2 papers and he couldn't tell me because he didn't have records. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Patterson is by far the worst english teacher i have ever had. he never explains his papers, he doesn't hand back your work until months later, he rambles about non-sense for the entire hour, he is mean and scratches his finger nails down the chalk board and cusses for no reason, he critques you on the smallest things. He is crazy. Do not take him.

Everyone says he is horrible which is kinda true but I think he is funny. He cancels class all the time. I think there was a period where we didn't have class for almost 2 weeks. He makes you print something called the monster and you have to write in your journals but you hardly ever have homework. The papers are a pain but what papers arent?
This guy is a riot...he's got to be my favorite professor at ECU. My only problem was trying to keep a straight face when he would talk.. even if your grade looks bad throughout the semester he'll help it out in the end. I got a B and I'm not a hard worker... If you want a comedy show every time you go to class, take Patterson!
I think he is by far one of the cutest men I have ever met. He actually cares about us and gives un interesting life lessons like what to do if you get arrested. Also, he has been around FOREVERR so he has a lot of really good stories. His grades are a little bit ridiculous, but not impossible. I love Mr. Patterson!
To be honest, I didn't really learn anything about the English Language. This guy is hilarious, although he is kinda unclear at points, but he's always available to help you out. I'm taking him again next semester. I only recommend him though if you're taking his class to fulfill the requirements, I wouldn't if I was an English major.
Mr. Patterson is my FAVORITE teacher at ECU. All you have to do in this class is what it says in "the monster", write your papers and thats it. no tests and his lectures are just hillarious to watch. he is just a great old man. (watch out when he calls you his lil pirates) arrgggg!
I thought Professor Patterson was pretty great! Sure, sometimes the lectures seemed pointless, but he always left the floor open for discussion. He isn't the easiest grader, but you'll get use to it after awhile. I did rather well in his class overall...just make sure you pay attention to what he is looking for and show up to class!
Plain and simple, Mr. Patterson's the man. He gades kind of hard, but you'll look forward to going to his class everyday. For our class, towards the end of th semester, he cancelled class for like everyday. We went to class seriously like 4 times all April. Mad chill.

I love Professor Patterson! He is a strange man at first but once you get to know him and his ways he is a really genuine guy. He cares about his students and really wants to help. As far as his class goes you have 4 major assignments that are fairly easy and he cancels class a lot toward the end. I want to take him again for 1200.

Don't take him if you want to be an English major but if you are doing something other than literature, he is the man to sign up for. He doesn't put up with most bull so don't be lazy and do the assignment the night before and get an "F".
His syllabus is 86 pages long --- RUN AWAY NOW!!! His assignments are unclear, he expects perfection, and he rambles about nothing every day. I would never advise anyone to sign up for his class.
I recommend you get out of this class if you get in. He starts attendance the first day and even if you?re not registered he still counts it as an absence ( and you only get 3 of those). He class isn?t even about english he makes you write these 3 papers about your genealogy. Be prepared to spend money to everything has to be bound by kinkos!
Pretty much a grouchy old man, but he knows what he's talking about. If you want to be a better writer, he'll make you one. He doesn't put up with any bull, but if you do the work your grades will reflect it. He will randomly cancel class and he gives two opportunities to make up absences. they're a trip to the library downtown and the graveyard.
The syllabus is 64 pages long. He calls it "The Monster". I got an A in this class, but I had to work extremely hard. The entire class revolves around a semester long project on your family history. You are expected to keep a free writing journal, and write 1000 words a week. He checks it every 4 weeks. Get ready to write A LOT!

Professor Patterson is HILARIOUS. If you want to come to class every week ( when you do have class) and just laugh at his jokes, then take him! However, if you're an english major who NEEDS to learn and HAS to make an A instead of a B, don't take this class. But if you don't want to work hard, never want to go to class, and make a b, take him.
He is a CRAZY old man, he tells stories that are off topic and doesnt explain assignments, but then expects them to be perfect. I am taking this class now and it its boring and a waste of time to attend class, but you have to cause he takes attendence. If you dont have to take him, dont cause you wont learn anything

He is the worst grader ever. If you leave out oneTINY thing, expect a fat ZERO. Class is mandatory but he cancels class often. In class, we did nothing at all but talk. I regret taking this class because I did not learn anything and with his harsh grading, failed it. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
horrible teacher. gives out assignments and does not explain them well. If you miss one detail in a paper its a zero. Only two good things about him, he cancels class all the time, but when he does not it last like fifteen minutes. Last i made only f's and d's on papers and still managed to pass with a C. Mr. Patterson is a little rough around the edges. He seems very tough at first & he tries to scare you off with "The Monster" (90 pg syllabus)BUT he really is a decent teacher. You should attend every class, but he is always canceling. As long as you do the work, you will be fine. I got an A!
Took him in 1989, never did get the letter I wrote myself that was supposed to be delivered in 10 years (even if he died). Loved the class, got a TON of useful knowledge out of it that I still use to this day.
