Mr. Payne is an excellent teacher. He loves what he does and makes it interesting ! He helps you by having conferences and he is young so he is able to relate to most of the students. He is the best english teacher at CC.

This guy is an inspiration. He teaches what is necessary and doesnt plague students with filler or try to trick them on tests.

Cool guy. reminds me of will ferrel. Pretty easy class, a few take home essays, one or two inclass, and research paper. BUT! dont worry, they are easy, and he grades pretty easily too. Just show effort, and you'll get an A. I BSed everything and got an A.

Great teacher. He relates well to the students and is fun to learn with. He keeps it simple but interesting. He laughs a lot and makes the time fly by. I took him for 100 and 102. A's in both!

Definitely my favorite teacher at Cypress! He is supportive, easy-going, funny, and extremely down to earth. Anyone who is willing to work a little bit is capable of getting an A in his class. Considering other teachers, both classes are a BREEZE!! he's the BEST!!

Professor Payne is the MOST AMAZING teacher I have met. His open and respectful attitude toward students is greatly appreciated. For the most part, the class revolved around reading short stories and writing a few essays. The literature was great and the essays weren't that bad. Conclusion: Take him.

I took him for eng 60 and 100. There's about 4-5 essays total. He's very clear about what he wants in his essays. If it's all there you'll get the grade you deserve! When I took his 100 class, he let us rewrite almost all of our essays to improve our grades. He's also very helpful. TAKE HIM!

Prof. Payne is a great teacher. He's really funny and down to earth. I hate writing essays but the ones we have to write are things that one is interested in. The essays are mostly argument papers and you can choose basically whatever you want. Class goes by fast. You have to work hard to get a good grade but it's still a great class to take.

He is definitely one of the teachers you should take for english. Although he is really laid back, nice and easy to talk to you cannot just sit in class and expect to get an "A". In his class, you will learn.

Our class had three outside essays and two inside essays. this class is not hard. if you attend class on a regular basis, do the homework, and particpate your fine. He is a relatively fair grader. GREAT instructor. Very student-oriented. He respects our comments & encourages our participation in class. We tackled hot issues that allowed us to develop our critical thinking skills--and he had us approach those issues through POETRY (yay!), movies, essays, & short stories. He clearly loves what he does. Wish I took more classes with him!

Payne knows how to teach English in a compelling way to seduce you into doing your work. Class is fun because Payne makes it fun, not an easy A, you will have to do the work, but it is a class I suggest you take because he honestly is a great English professor.

as long as you TRY to put in some effort into his class, i don't see how anyone can't get an "A". the book is mandatory as it is used in class and for hw -- mostly light-to-medium reading. there are a couple of papers, few short quizzes, but they're easy as long as you do the reading. really -- it's an easy class and he's a way cool teacher!!

Very clear on what he wants on the essays, and answers any questions you might have about the essays or anything else. He will stay a long time after class just to answer questions you have or to help you write a good essay. He makes the topics very interesting, and helps the class become comfortable enough to share their opinions openly on issues.

Mr. Payne is a great teacher. He is always willing to help students. He grades essays fairly, on a rubric, so you know exactly why you earned the grade you received. Although the essays deal with lots of personal opinion, he grades your paper objectively. He doesn't push an agenda. Read what's assigned and come to class. You'll be fine.

Very clear & engaging with students. He's very helpful on every topic & explains as best as he can. He's extremely nice & grades your essays fairly according to his rubric. The midterm & final in class essays are fairly easy if you're properly prepared. Dont skip class, he has quizzes in the beginning on readings he assigned during the last class!

Mr Payne is NOT a pain at all....he made me want to read & write. I never liked English much until this class. He reviews & discusses the book you read thoroughly by chapter. 5 essays (2 in class & 3 at home). If you want to be prepared for essays...COME TO CLASS, Be involved, & do the homework! I was getting a B+ but revised one essay & got an A!

Payne is the man! I honestly suck at english but his class made better at writting! He is a very chill guy and a fair grader. His class is fairly easy only 5 essays including the mid and the final, 1 group presentation and a few journals very easy to do. If english is not your strength I highly recommend him he will help you write alot better!

Great professor! Had him for ENG 100 as well. Very clear and rational when it comes to grades. He allows you to revise any one outside paper for regrading. Easy B and if you put in extra effort, easy A. Great professor!

Great teacher! I thought his class was on the easier side but I still feel like I learned so much. He's very fair when it comes to grading and does all he can to help you succeed - if you want to, you will. Book is necessary but he has you get an older edition (brand new, my book was maybe $5). Also, his corny nerd jokes are the best.

Love this teacher! he's handsome and lectures make you think, got to watch a couple of films and topics were very interesting, I believe there's 3-4 essays, he's a genuinely sweet and caring guy! and his dad jokes and puns are the best! it tickles me to see how much it tickled him haha, I highly recommend him!

Professor Payne is a great teacher! He gives great feedback on essays and tells you what you can improve on. Overall the class is based on assigned readings, about 3 essays, and a final. Professor Payne is very passionate about what he teaches, and will clarify things if you do not understand. He is accessible, funny, and very easy on the eyes.

really enjoyed his english 60 class. His classroom environment is very laid back. We wrote 5 essays, one was timed, and another essay was the in class final. He gives prompts before hand. Not much of a tough grader, and even if your essay is bad he'll still give you a good grade, but add his commentary, and allow for revision. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM

Professor Payne was a really cool English teacher. Usually I hate English classes, but Professor Payne made it awesome. He is probably the most chill and cool teacher I have ever had. Plus, he did not give one quiz or test the entire semester. There are 5 papers, but he gives the prompts well in advance.

Payne is a great Creative Writing teacher. The course catalog makes it sound like it will be nonstop work, but it was really easy. Total of 6 easy assignments, with more than enough time to do them. I hate English classes, but this class was an easy A, and kind of fun, too. No quizzes, tests, or final! If you are looking for extra units, take this!

Professor Payne is awesome. 5 essays for the entire semester. Journal entires are done maybe once every 1-2 weeks (half a page). He also gives prompts well in advanced so you're prepared. Besides that, not much work. He's a great guy and very friendly. He encourages group work in class but if you want to work alone thats fine too. TAKE HIS CLASS

Very easy class. Let's you make up your lowest essay, and the final was open book. He attempts to engage the entire class during discussions, so participation matters! Very approachable and clear on what he expects. Textbook wasn't used so that was a waste.. nonetheless I'll be taking him again next semester for english 100 (:

I would take his class again. He is a very cool and caring professor. You have to read your poems and short stories in a circle with the class but in total it is about 6 times. You need to buy/rent 2 books to do some easy exercises from them. You turn 1 in halfway through the semester and the other packet on the final day. Overall stress free.

Professor Payne is the BEST. 2 terms quizzes (just definitions), 2 essays (he lets you revise one for a better grade), 2 journal entries. Read short stories, poems, and plays in class but never picks on anyone to read. He always explains things very well and makes sure his class gets it. Hes super understanding. You can easily get a good grade!

Professor Payne is literally one of the best professors I've had. He is such a kind person and really wanted us to get the best grade possible. You only need to buy 1/3 of the books and the essays we write are not that hard since he helps us prepare. I definitely recommend taking his class.

Professor Payne was such a great teacher and he made the 3 hour english class tolerable. I thought his essay topics were very interesting. Textbook is used throughout the semester so make sure you bring it to class everyday!

Prof Payne is kind, understanding, and clear with instructions. This class was asynchronous, but he was very accessible outside of class. We only read 3 books, wrote 5 essays, and everything would be assigned every Monday then due the following Sunday. I highly recommend this course, especially bc of how flexible it can adapt to busy schedules.

I wish more Profs would be like him, especially during these stressful times. He extended deadlines twice because he felt the class did not have time. He responds quickly to emails, and he is available for office hours. His lectures go hand in hand with the book so there is no confusion. Class is super easy, just weekly reading assignments and questions. 3 Regular essays and 2 timed ones. Class is HYPER political in its content so be prepared for that. If you do the work, you get an easy pass.

Professor Payne was an excellent professor for an asynchronous English class. He has clear grading criteria for essays and routine homework assignments. If you struggle with Zoom, take his completely asynchronous course with a reasonable workload.

Hes an amazing thorough teacher. The reading really gets your wheels turning. I learned a lot about issues I really never thought about before. A lot of homework, so keep up on your reading.

JP is an amazing professor. I went into his literature course worried as literature is relatively hard but he makes it really simple and interesting. I believe theres 4 essays total, no midterms/quizzes, and one group assignment which you present (just 5 points). Writing assignment each week for 0.5-2 points. Take him you wont regret it! Trust.

Took this class straight out of high school, and it was the reason as to why I LOVED online classes. Prof. Payne is very good at giving prompts for each assignment and gives great feedback with EVERY discussion post. Honestly would have taken him for the rest of my English courses if he was available!!

I took this class for my first sem in college and Prof JP was awesome. It was an online class and was made up of discussions/readings. There are 4 essays for the semester and no midterm, although the essays are a huge portion of your grade. He grades fairly harsh on essays but is fair, and gives good feedback. Minimal work and due Sundays.

I took an online asynchronous course. Professor Payne is chill. His assignments are straightforward and easy to work. He also replies to emails very fast. If you need to finish ENGL 100 or do an ENGL class, take him!

He's pretty chill and down to earth, there is weekly reading but its not bad since you always go over it in class. He grades papers pretty easy. He is good at explaining things and being relatable but the class material itself can be boring. Mandatory attendance, you can miss 3 classes without your grade dropping. Easy enough and fair

Love this guy, provides materials. Most of ur grade will be exams (papers) and an easy group project. There is some assigned reading but it's quite manageable. he goes over it in class lectures and is good at explaining. attendance is mandatory but u can miss up to 3 classes and get full credit. make sure ur 3 essays are solid and well researched

def an easy professor (I sometimes did HW for other classes in his class)! shows good books, articles, and topics!! there are three essays, a group project, and a midterm (easy because he gives you a cheat sheet beforehand to study). he grades easy (you just need to follow the requirements)

Great Prof overall. The class wasn't too difficult but be ready to read. He would often lecture for the entirety of the class, so if you don't do well with lectures for 2 hours straight then maybe reconsider. Very informative class and his syllabus was very thorough.

Super nice and caring. Had a lot of issues with my papers and homework but he was super understanding. One of the nicest teachers I've ever had. Class is easy and workload is average. For an English class, I would say its pretty easy.

Professor Payne was super sweet and caring towards his students. The week of thanksgiving he decided to give everyone a rest week which I thought was super kind considering other professors still gave assignments. Overall he was a great professor and wants you to succeed!

The reading material and writing assignments are a lot and sometimes difficult (for me), but he is a very caring teacher and spends a lot of his extra time replying to messages and helping students to learn. He doesn't accept any kind of use of AI in writing.

Easily will go down as one of my favorite professors. Took my first semester and always looked forward to his class, wish it lasted the whole year. Super funny and understanding. Provides the textbook and has some group assignments. He checks up on us to see if we're understanding and we watch around 3 movies in the class.

This was my first semester ever at college and i thought this teacher made this semester so easy for me. No test or quizzes just 4 essays, get to watch movies, some group projects but it's just to talk amongst your peers to brainstorm and overall just a chill and easy class. Amazing professor! His class is overall one of my favorites. The only ever work we did was 4 essays total, one of them being the final. For each essay, he offers a good amount of time and even gives out papers to outline and guide us. Favorite part was, the final is open book. He is a very understandable professor. Definitely recommend.
