Mr.P is a great lecturer and has a vast knowledge of chemistry. He keeps good office hours if you have questions, and always returns e-mails and phone messages promptly. If you need to take these classes as a prerequesite for the nursing program, I would highly reccomend Mr.P.!
I took Mr P. for both 121 and 122. I had avoided Chemistry at all costs, but ended up having to take it anyway. The class is not easy, but with Mr. P. It's fun and probably as easy to understand as the subject matter will allow. He is fantastic, will help in any way he can. I HIGHLY recommend him to anybody who doesn't really enjoy science.
This teacher is the best! He makes this class enjoyable!! I love chemistry now. If you are going in to nursing this is the guy. Course fully related to nursing!
He is such an awesome teacher! he really cares about if you are "getting the point!" However, attendance is very important! Offers lots of examples to help you learn! Very fun!
JD is an awesome professor! He is very clear of expectations and makes the subject interesting. He is always available to his students and genuinely cares about each one. I never would have thought I could get an A in a chemistry class, but JD made it possible! I wish he taught all my classes...other professos could learn something from him!
Mr.P is an excellent professor. So far he is the best I have ever had. He lays out all his expectations from day one, and is crystal clear about what he ecpects from his students. Nice guy too. He likes to break up some of the seriousness with jokes and videos. He is always available for questions and never makes you feel stupid! GREAT INSTRUCTOR!
John Pellock is wonderful! Very understanding of students needs. Fair grader on everything, and tests are fully reladed to homework, and lectures. Even if cheistry isn't your thing, he will make you get it! Can't wait for next quarter:)
fabulous instructor!
Mr Pellock is an AMAZING teacher.. He is positively the best I have ever had, for any subject. Chemistry in itself is a hard subject, but if you listen and pay attention in his class, he makes everything crystal clear. He's got a wonderful sense of humor, and you truly learn the material. Also, you don't have to memorize the periodic chart with him!
Tough subject but delivered very well by Professor.
This teacher is thee Chemistry teacher for dummies. With take home tests and sheer fun in class I now understand chemistry Took me twice!!! take him you won't regret it!!
Mr.P is the best instructor ever!! He believes in his students and makes the work doable, even for non chemistry lovers. He tells you what you need to know to get by, and gives plenty of notice for homework and exams. Take him you wont regret it. HINT HINT, NUDGE NUDGE, WINK WINK!!! Mr. P is the greatest!!
I interviewed several teachers before deciding to take this class with Mr. P. His teaching style works for all types of learners whether you are auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or multi-modal, you won't be disappointed as long as you take responsibility for your learning. I highly suggest staying on top of homework (i.e. work 1 chapter ahead!)
JD Pellock is amazing. In Chem 122 he gives take home exams...they are difficult, but not impossible. He always makes himself available by keeping daily office hours, and returns emails promptly and even over the weekend. He by far is the the best professor I have ever had, and I will miss his sence of humor in the classroom.UNFORGETABLE PROFESSOR!
Mr. P is a great teacher! I learned a lot in his class and he made sure that everyone got the correct information! I would reccommend taking Mr. P over any chemistry professor!
Awesome Professor, totally rocks!
Mr.P is a very fun teacher with lots of enthusiasm..He is always willing to answer questions and really makes himself available to the students.. But this is still chemistry and you need to study. I don't think anyone will be disappointed in this class.
a bit wierd at first, but then his qwirkyness grows on you. he's a great teacher...have the right attitude, and he'll reward you!
enjoyed his class very much. he's a bit wierd at first...quotes a lot of stupid movies...but he knows what he's talking about when it comes to chemistry!
Fairly odd human being, but he's a great teacher and he's very helpful.
Mr. Pellock was very helpful. He bent over backwards to help us understand the concepts and get a good grade in the class. His labs were fast-paced and informative
Mr. P is my favorite professor so far. He manages to keep everyone awake in chem! He will do anything you need to help you succeed and understand the material. And he gives good tips on how to use it in daily life which makes the information easier to remember. His tests are difficult, but if you show up to class and study, you are prepared.
Mr. P is a scifi fan, a cooky comedic, and has a hippy peace, love, and happyness attitude. Great communication, available for help anytime I needed it. Very informative!!! I'd take his class for all Sciences if I could
Took Pellock for both chem 121 and chem 131. Excellent teacher who is as he claims ARJ but will give you every tool you need to succeed. If you want a good grade in Chem and are willing to put in effort to get it take him!!! He is there to help if you need him and you MUST attend his lectures to gain the info needed.
I really like the way this teacher does notes. He is also very fair and amusing.
I took Mr.P for Chem 121 & 131, he is the best chemistry teacher in all of Olympic College, hands down. Extreamly helpful, interesting, wants you to understand all the material. Attendance is mandatory if you want a good grade. I highly recomend him, especially if you struggle with inorganic chemistry!
I had an absolutely miserable experience with chemistry back in high school, and this class completely turned that around. Pellock is a brilliant professor--his lectures couldn't be clearer, and his style of written notes makes it easy to learn. It is absolutely clear what is expected of students--go to class, pay attention, and you will do well!
After taking Chemistry with another professor at Olympic College, and dropping it, I decided to give professor Pellock a try. What a difference! Everything suddenly made sense! He is very helpful, and I have honestly never met a teacher that wanted his/her students to succeed more than he does! If you plan on taking chemistry, take him! He's great!
Mr. P is the best chemistry professor. Read all the positive reviews below. He knows his stuff. Great in-class notes. Great explanations. Great guy
DO NOT TAKE A CHEM CLASS FROM ANYONE ELSE. This guy is worth the drive no matter where you are. You need to go to class because in class you take pages of notes but its worth it because EVERY TEST is take home. He's a little eccentric but better than being a drone.I am AWFUL at anything science and I've got a 4.0 Easy class. Good teacher. Great guy
I really liked Pellock for 121 and felt pretty good about the class. In 131 he is very vague, he moves from chapter to chapter and you have no idea where he is at. He is very entertaining though! The tests this quarter are all take home so thats good, I dont think I could pass his class otherwise. His lectures are very hard to understand!!!
Great teacher, takes time to help you understand material and makes time to meet you if you need help. He does not give grades out for free, you must work for them but as long as you are there in class for lecture getting a good grade is easy. One of the best teachers i have taken!
This dude is wild and entertaining. Concepts were easy to understand with the approaches he used, he simplified even the most difficult of topics.
I took 121 and 131 with Mr.P. He is a great Professor and is willing to help you outside of class. You need to put in the work to get a good grade. He has a different way of teaching Chem which makes it easy to understand.
I absolutely loved this professor. He is funny, entertaining and very helful. He is always ready to give you a hand if needed. His class is a bit hard and you need to really put lots of effort to pass with a good grade. Lots of writing and notes and I mean a lot!!! I would recommend this class to anyone interested in chemistry. He is just great!!!
I believe he did the best of his abilities to make his class fun and I was able to learn a lot about Chemistry, but he was not understanding when I needed help about my grade.
Very helpful. Explains everything. Assignments are easy & you get the chance to get a higher grade when problems are missed the first time. Really wants students to understand the subject. Also, understands the weight the nursing program puts on this classes grade.
I have taken his Chem 121 and I am in his Chem 131 now. He is funny, and he makes it very fun. Labs are hard but informative. Homework is pretty easy! Take home tests in 131. He explains everything! He is a bit crazy but with his HINT HINT Wink Wink Nudge Nudge, Period! End of Sentence, Goodnight Irene and the YouTube Videos but YOU LEARN A LOT!!!
Awesome teacher. I can't imagine taking chemistry from anyone else. Took him for 121 and 131, finishing both classes with an A. He's super weird and funny and everyone loves him! Lots of notes but that's what made the tests easy. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.
Mr. P is a riot! Most entertaining professor I've yet to have. I took his 121 class, and will taking 131 from him in the future. Great professor. I definitely would recommend him.
There are at least two ways to consider "easy". First, there is "easy" as being able to teach the material so that the student actually understands the concepts. In this sense, Mr. P is extraordinary, and a student will indeed learn Chemistry. Then there is "easy" as in not a lot of work. In this sense, be prepared to earn your grade.
J.D is truly a great teacher. He obviously is passionate about the subject and his students. He is very clear and fair in his expectations. He makes chemistry manageable!
Mr. P is a good teacher. He is very passionate about his subject and he uses a lot well known movie references to help get an idea across. All of his lectures are uploaded to the internet so you can view them as you wish. I've attended lecture only 3 times this quarter and I'm passing just fine. WARNING: I wouldn't trust him with an open flame.
Mr. P is hilarious! He uses a ton of movie and real-world examples to make a difficult subject like organic chemistry fun and easy to understand. If you cannot come to class every day, he also uploads his lectures online which makes it really handy to review for exams! He was always available for additional help and very understanding teacher.
A good Chem professor is worth their weight in gold. Mr. P is AMAZING. He posts class lectures online, and provides homework help via email. He's fun to listen to, a little corny but you can tell he loves his subject. While the material is not easy and you WILL earn your grade, he makes it fun.
Love his use of technology and accessing lectures online to re-listen to them. Often deviates from text, but also expects you to get info from it that's not in lecture. Appreciate his attempts to relate concepts to pop culture even if its a bit much sometimes. Sounds odd but I'd have liked more homework to practice concepts.
Great, understanding teacher and always willing to help and work with you. He's extremely fair. Class is never boring
He was always so excited to teach class it made me excited to learn from him! His lectures notes are always exactly what's on the test and that was very helpful in acing his tests. His labs are a little lengthy but he is very passionate about chemistry especially if you're pursuing Nursing. TAKE HIM!
Mr. P, is a great instructor. He's always willing to listen and help. Classroom lectures are ALWAYS interesting. definitely take his class.
Worst professor at OC. I was a straight A student before taking this class. Although the material was relatively easy, I pulled through with a C+ due to his terrible teaching style. He writes all his lectures in barely legible handwriting and expects you to watch additional lectures online every week. It was almost impossible to pay attention.
Mr. P is an amazing chemistry professor! You go to class a couple times a week, but if you miss a day, he posts all his lectures online. This comes in handy for tests. They are take home tests, so you can always review material by going over the online stuff. He drops your lowest lab grade. Barely used the textbook. TAKE HIM!
Great teacher, lectures can get long, but everything you need to know for the tests is on them. Text book is not needed, at least for 121. Would take again.
Mr. P is an amazing chemistry teacher. I don't like chemistry, but he makes it interesting and it's changed my attitude about it. The lectures are long, but they are also available online including his notes. His tests are long and hard, but if you show up for class, do the homework and re-listen to his lectures before the test, you'll get an A.
Best teacher ever. I strongly recommend you take his classes. He makes learning fun, has a great since of humor. He is very helpful, just ask if you need it. The lectures are posted online, so look at them as much as you need. He always posts things in a timely manner. The labs are passed in away that helps you learn more.
I definitely did not expect it to be so lecture heavy. He has 2 in class lectures a week, 1 lab, and 1 online lecture. He is very lighthearted and is constantly making jokes (a lot of which i don't understand). All of his lectures are recorded through pentacast meaning you can catch up easily. His organization is lacking but overall a great teacher
I enjoyed taking his Chem121 class. He is a good teacher, but there was a heavy workload and the tests are challenging.
Mr. Pellock is an excellent teacher. Although some think he's dorky, I think he's just fabulous! He purposely teaches with a sense of humor that will have you remembering certain aspects of Chemistry 121 and am currently taking him for Chemistry 131. He posts his lectures online as well as gives them in person. He is quick to responing to emails fo
He is a great teacher. Keep in mind this chemistry so that part maybe hard for some people. Pellock is amazing, can ask questions, his labs are helpful and fun. If you have to take this class or just want to truly have one of the best teachers ever. Since his wife is Nurse, he knows the answers you may have.
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff, and he's super easy to understand. That said, a little disorganized. Make sure you are checking online for assignments every day, as he doesn't follow any kind of schedule. His lectures are long, but far from boring. He's very energetic. VERY. As in, if you have PTSD be forewarned that he randomly shouts, in fun.
This professor has the worst lectures of all time. He talks about completely unrelated things, makes useless references that are usually longer than the subject being discussed, and neglects to sufficiently say which material is important and what isn't. He assigns lectures off class time, despite the class not being described online.
Awesome teacher, always willing to help you. If you feel lost during a lab or test- don't freak out because he will make sure to clarify. If you feel like skipping class, make sure to check his lectures online because he does put important information up there
He is a tough grader but the sciences are supposed to be hard, I don't have much patience with whiners. Mr Pellock works harder himself than he expects from you. Personally I don't want to entrust my life to a health provider who wasn't up to the challenge.
Mr.P is hilarious during his lectures, so it makes them go by quick. He has take home tests that he encourages you to work with other students in class. You can find his lectures online because he records all of them. Labs were fun. I recommend that anybody who has a hard time understanding Chemistry take his class.
His class is very hard, I struggled and he was never willing to answer questions. I have good grades in my other classes, however I felt very lost in Pellock's class. Would not recommend.
He was very understanding of emergencies, either family or not. He understood that we have lives outside of school and posted his lectures, spoken and written, everyday immediately after lecture. Only had midterm and final in lecture and only a final in lab.
Lectures are recorded in class and posted online so showing up isn't mandatory but lab is. He offers multiple approaches to topics, and is very funny. Highly recommend.
Great professor, energetic, lots of variety and personal touch, nice guy, helpful works well to help solve an assignment issue, pretty funny at times.
Labs were great. Lectures went on forever, but you could listen to them online instead of actually going to class. The lectures for fridays were all online. The textbook was a waste; he said it was wrong for mostly everything. Unless you quoted him verbatim on exams, the answer was either wrong or not right enough for full credit.
Did not even open the textbook. The lab test and three tests were fairly difficult. Lectures are posted online, so attendance to those is not necessarily required. He made the class fun and interesting, but it does require studying to understand concepts and pass tests. Overall good teacher who was willing to extend some deadlines when needed.
Mr. P is funny, and is very caring. Willing to extend deadlines if needed for a good reason. Tests are very difficult and graded hard. Tests are a large portion of grade, and there is only 3 tests. He posts Friday lectures even though the class is Mon/Wed. One upside is he posts every lecture online. Either way, be prepared to work your butt off.
Mr P is probably the best professor I have had in all my years of college. His lectures are hilarious. He uploads everything plus extra so if you miss a lecture, it's available. He grades fairly and is a professor that is highly approachable. If you need this class, only take it with him. You won't be disappointed.
If you're the type of person that learns by writing notes during lecture than this class is for you. I personally cannot write and try to understand a complex subject like chemistry at the same time. Other than that, he is a very reasonable professor and understands that life happens sometimes. He is willing to extend due dates if you need it.
Professor P is one of the easiest professors to understand. He records his lectures so if you miss a day, no big deal. He is also a very merciful Professor. He does not expect you to be on top of things 100% all of the time. He understands mistakes and helps you fix them. He's the most reasonable and respectable Professor I have ever had. 5 stars!
Barely legible handwriting, and all the information that you needed was through his lecture. If you answered right on the test, which are VERY grade heavy, and the answer was right but not by his lecture standards, no points given. Gets way too off topic trying to make jokes, first day of class he said chemistry was harder for girls. Never again.
Very lenient on missed homework/tests. Very down to earth. 5/5 teacher.
Depending on learning style, make sure to attend lectures. Definitely one of my top three teachers of all time. Make sure to have movie quotes ready!
Pellock is an interesting character. He flat out tells you what he expects and sets his standards the first day. That being said he cares about his students and his lectures were always easy to follow, very note heavy. He goes the mile and adds humor to boot. You give it your time and he will give you his. I would recommend him to anyone.
He did not explain that there are weekend lectures that must be downloaded. The labs were really fun. The tests were very hard. I felt like I didn't know how to study for the tests. Basic concepts were skipped over, and he ran out of time at the end of the term and we were on our own to learn the hardest concepts. He is funny and kind, though.
This is my second year at Olympic College and JD Pellock is the best professor I've taken a class from. He is very good at teaching and doesn't waste your time with busy work. He is also super fun, half of my course syllabus was movie and music references.
Funny Lectures, very caring teacher. I would definitely take his chemistry series again.
He is very accessable outside of class, and is always willing to work with you and wants you to succeed. He is lecture heavy but posts them on line so you can listen to them again. You have to keep up on the lectures or you will not pass. But he knows life happens so he works with you on due dates. Uses real life examples to help you understand.
Very good teaching style! we had tons of snow during this class so a lot of lecture was dumped on us in online portions. Wasnt a big fan how he prepared us for the final but if you work hard then you shouldn't have a problem passing
Pellock works very hard to make sure his students succeed. If you put in the work, he will put in the work to make sure you understand the content. The way he does his notes is a little confusing at first, but once you adapt to that it is a good class. He is always available for good feedback. I'm taking his 131 class next quarter.
Pellock is an outstanding instructor! I did CHEM121 and 131 with him and am so nervous to have any other Natural Science class without his instruction; he is so clear and wants us to ask questions so he can see what we are struggling with. Hes approachable and answers his emails within 2 min. Also he relates chem to nursing often, so highly recom.
Super great professor. Took him for chem 121 and 131! He was so clear about his expectations and was easily accessible for questions. The lectures are all online but being there in person is better because he makes lectures so interesting. I am going to miss having a science class without his instructions. Highly recommend taking his classes.
Before taking him I hated chemistry but he made his lectures very interesting and enjoyable. I really recommend him he understands and actually wants his students to succeed
You won't regret taking his class. He is an amazing instructor. He records all of his lectures for students, lectures are informative, makes lectures fun. He promotes communication and is practically always available for questions - in and outside of class. He gives clear expectations of students. Tough grader, but gives all the information needed.
Pellock is such an awesome professor. Although I didn't get an awesome grade in the class, that's on me. I would 100% recommend taking a class with him. He's so understanding and has no problem giving extensions on homework. He lives by hakuna matata. He made chemistry so fun and his corny humor made his lectures more bearable. :)
Mr. Pellock is an amazing Chemistry teacher. He's funny and always accessible when you need him. He's also very understanding and will extend homework if you need it (but don't push it). He teaches via lecture at home, not via Zoom (but is available on Zoom if needed). He makes Chemistry so understandable.
Prof P is definitely one of the best science teachers I've ever had. Lectures are jammed packed with good info and he explains concepts in a way you will remember/understand them. You can tell he is an expert in his field. Lectures are informative/hilarious. Very approachable if you have questions/concerns. Ask him for help if you need it!
Overall this was a hard course but if you put in the work, watch the lectures, take notes. and utilize his course handout you can get a good grade. He responded fairly quickly with questions/concerns by email. Hes not the professor to make excuses or complain to but he will do what he can to help you succeed. I Did not use textbook all quarter.
I took 121 and 131 from him and he was an absolute gem. Rarely used the textbook in 121 and used it sometime in 131 (he uses the same textbook for both classes). Being very specific is critical in labs and exams as he wants very detailed explanations. 3 exams were based mostly on labs and lectures, all are open notes too.
I took chem 121 and 131 with him. This class is definitely hard, but he is such an amazing teacher!! There are 3 lectures per week that you can do whenever you have time, so it can be really easy to get behind. But I have never had a teacher be more willing to help out/extend deadlines. He also responds to emails so fast! He's the best!!
This class has about 3 lectures a week. Each lecture totals to about 45min - 1hr. Homework and labs almost every week. With that being said, Professor P is an amazing and understanding professor. He was always available when I had questions and made sure I understood the material. Amazing and easy to talk to. Highly recommend.
I cannot rave highly enough about professor Pellock! Wow is he a gifted professor who really really cares about his students education! He is readily available to provide assistance often. I am just so thankful to have taken his course!
Prof P is an excellent educator, his major downfall is that his personality can be intense... I really enjoy the ridiculous dad jokes, his caring nature, and dismiss his "tough guy" attitude. You will fail the class if you don't listen to his lectures. All of his tests are open book/note, so he grades very critically.
Great professor with an amazing personality! His class was lecture and textbook-heavy. I referred to the textbook every time I took one of his tests. Tests have to be detailed as they are take-home and open note/book. Labs were super fun. He was always available for help and is pretty fast at responding to emails.
I even retook the class with him because he was so helpful!! If you want to do well then take his class!! He sets you up to succeed and cares. I could have put more time in to get a better grade but he was extremely fun and flexible!
Lecture online with labs in person. Such a cool guy! Would definitely recommend Prof. P! Just make sure to answer HW questions fully
I love Professor P. And, his personality can take some getting used to. That said, he's an amazingly caring professor who deeply knows his stuff and wants you to leave the course with a solid understanding of the material. The class is lecture heavy and you'll need to keep up... seriously. Get a study group! Answer thoroughly. Keep materials nearby
It's a lecture-heavy course, keep up w/the lectures & make note or something when during lecture he says its important. His exams are difficult but the answers are in the lecture material. Labs were fun! Don't just plan on cheating through this course, learn the material, work hard, and you will do good. You need to know this in the future anyway.
Genuinely so caring and smart. Keep up with the lectures and ask questions! Prof. P will do whatever he can to help you out, you just need to ask. 3 lectures per week, 3 exams, a lab every week, and homework every so often. Exams are easy if you pay attention. I will be going out of my way to take 131 with him again. Didn't use the textbook once.
Professor P was the best teacher iv ever had, I took both the classes he teaches! made it easy and clear to understand the subjects as long as you kept up and payed attention. Helped me out of class, and on his free time. Gives extensions. Responds to emails almost immediately unlike most teachers. And made learning interesting and fun!
He is a very homework heavy teacher. He gets frustrated when you ask too many questions. The work load is insane. Two hour lecture videos everyday. The exams are almost nothing like the material you learn. You have lots of homework in this class.
I took 121 & 131 with Professor P. He gives you everything you need to pass his class. READ & take notes on EVERYTHING he gives you, follow his advice & clues. He gives extra lectures just to help you. He is funny, and quirky, and kind. If you struggle JUST reach out. He WILL HELP YOU!! He wants to see that you care & are putting in effort.
Mr. P cares about his student's success as long as he sees you care about your own success. He willingly will extend AKTIV assignments to help your grade and makes his expectations for lab reports crystal clear. He has a great sense of humor and includes many memes and movie references to make his class fun. He provides a study guide for tests.
He made a difficult subject understandable. Generally everything that was tested on was in the lecture.
He is easy to talk to and open to working with you. Watch the lectures, they make all the difference in the world. He helped in not only this class but some of my other classes too because his instruction was spot on. Would love to take him again.
Professor P is kind and helpful, but the lectures are unnecessary long. The questions on the exams were much harder than anything covered in the lectures, and I often had no idea how to solve them. With no extra credit options, the class feels overwhelming and really hard to pass. Shorter lectures and better test alignment would improve the course.
Prof. P is a genuinely caring instructor who wants students to succeed. Keep up with lectures, ask questions, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI to excel. The class is lecture-heavy but manageable if you stay engaged. Definitely recommend taking CHEM 131 with this professor.
I can NOT stress this enough. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He will give study guides but his tests will look different. His lectures are pre-recorded from years back. His handwriting is not legible and the lectures do not help. Do not take this professor if you want to succeed in Chem 121. Take anybody else.
Best chemistry teacher I've had. He gives amazing lectures but handwriting is hard to read at times. He's always available to answer questions and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking them. Make sure to take really good lecture notes. He's also funny and makes learning memorable. He definitely wants his students to succeed.
He is a fantastic teacher who cares and wants his students to pass. He gives everyone everything they need to succeed in his class.
I had him for college success, and the only thing I have to say is this: Do not take a life skills class with a teacher who is not versed in teaching life skills.
Stay on top of your lectures and ask questions when you don't fully grasp something! Lab content and grading criteria are clear and straightforward, he breaks subjects down into digestible amounts, and he uses enough analogies to make difficult concepts make sense. Lectures can go on, but you do walk away with a good grasp on the content.
I appreciated the way he organized his lectures and labs and always gave clear instructions. He has a way of making an intimiating class like Chemistry a fun, open space. He gives you a list of key concepts you need to study and practice before each exam, which I really appreciated.
His personality needs a little getting used to, but he's super nice! His homework is graded basically on participation and allows unlimited extensions on assignments. He really just wants you to do well. His lectures are a bit lengthy, and his handwriting is tragic, but the material is relatively easy. You also barely use the textbook. I recommend!
