If you're having trouble with calculus concepts, Pfeilsticker provides help when you need it - just head over to his office when he's available. He's a pretty good mathematics professor, in my opinion, and he's at least able to keep attention in class.
He is the worst math professor Ive ever had. He showed the class a problem, skipped five steps and went to the solution and when everyone was confused he said I guess I shouldnt be lazy. He doesnt finish working on problems he doesnt know how to solve, doesnt make a plan on how to teach the class for the day and assigns 100+ question reviews
Very difficult, sometimes moves too fast in class. But you can tell he knows the math really well, and that he really cares about students. Go to office hours! He's much better at answering questions one-on-one.
He is not organized at all. His lectures are like some from here others from there. It is really hard to follow the lecture for me. I don't recommend him to any of you.
You won't pass if you don't attend. He is fair when he grade and is very clear on how he deducts points. He is very flexible to go out of his way to help you, so take advantage of that! He spent hours helping me understand the material I needed for the next exam on his own time. He will make sure you understand what you ask. lot of needed home work
Overall a good professor. The grade is: 4 tests + final + study guides ( basically a free 20% of your grade). His lectures that can be hard to follow at times and his tests a little tricky, but he is extremely helpful out of class and during testing. Do the study guides you will get an A. I would take him again 100% now that I know his methods
Professor Pfeilsticker is awesome! He is very passionate about Mathematics. I've noticed that he is VERY careful about the words he uses so he always means what he says, and there is rarely any confusion. He's extremely rational; he knows how to convey information and make it stick! All you need to do is do your homework and attend class.
Professor Pfeilsticker does an excellent job at explaining problems, and describing theorems and how they work. It's clear from listening to his lectures that he is passionate about mathematics. This could have the side effect of causing someone who isn't so sharp on math to get lost, so be careful of that.
DO NOT TAKE. I passed algebra in high school with 100%. I took his class and had to with drawl because I failed his test with a 36%. If you are an absolute genius at algebra then yes take his class. Attendance is very important.
I was great in Algebra back in high school and liked it all the way until I took this guys class. He took points off the tests for stupid reasons. I found the tests to be easy, but I would end up with C's or lower. Thats adding to how much homework there was on MyMathLab. I now have to retake the class, further delaying my graduation.
Mr. Pfeilsticker is a good math professor and it is clear that he has the passion for math. He is good in that aspect as he will go out of his way to make sure you understand the topics and that you get questions correctly. He doesn't collect HW, which can be a good or bad thing as what carries your grade are exams and his exams are brutal.
He moves on fast when taking notes and explaining things to students. He reads off the board assuming that you should already know alot of the material. Does give you the chance to make up homework and tests that you miss.
Good at lecturing, however assumes you already know material that he never covered. Literally said, Barely anyone in any of my classes got this question right. You guys should know this from high school. Very lenient on homework and quizzes. Will reopen them for you to complete with no penalty. Dont skip class and do the homework to do well.
Professor Pfeilsticker is my favorite professor at Santa fe. His classes take complex information and break them down into more manageable portions. I dont think you'll find a professor that is more passionate about math at this college. If you are good at math and are willing to put in work, Professor Pfeilsticker will definitely work with you.
Prof. Pfeilsticker is an amazing dude. From his first lecture, you know this guy knows his stuff inside and out. He is probably the best math teacher/professor I have had ever. His class is only graded on basically three tests and a final exam but they aren't abnormally hard but you still need to study, study, study.
Its a math class so obviously the work can get difficult but, hes cool with extending hw and letting you make up tests if you miss them. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He will not set you up to fail. Overall best math teacher at fe. (i have no idea how his rating isnt 5)
Ignore all of the bad things that people say about Professor Pfeilsticker, if you are a good student, you WILL do well in class. You need to have good study habits and time management to complete his homework, which btw is not graded. He's amazing at what he does and you can clearly tell he's a genius.
John soft spoken and takes awhile to cover material, I found this class boring and rarely showed up. You're better off going once a week to learn of upcoming test dates and just use the homework on MyMathLab to teach you the lessons. He wants you to pass and will take any assignments late. If you do need the help just show up.
Very good Teacher. I recommend going to class, if you do all the hw he assigned(its a lot) you will do well. awesome office hrs!!!!
Best math teacher ever!
I tried my hardest to study for all the exams. Every week its hours worth of homework but did reopen at the end of the semester to make it up. I thought I was going to at least get a C but worked hard for a D. Know your stuff before going or go get a tutor, did not teach me and had to teach myself. Hard to understand with his soft spoken voice
He has a very soft spoken voice so you will need to stay more towards the front if you want to be fully engaged. If you already have some concept of the math he is teaching he is great because he is able to explain concepts to someone who doesn't understand and still keep you engaged.
He is a very nice and considerate teacher who will give you ample time to finish homework as well as online quizzes at home. Each homework and quiz gives you multiple tries to complete and receive credit. He will even help give you hints on tests if you forget. He is very helpful and teaches the information in a fun and exciting way (unbelievable!)
He is a really nice guy and gives you many chances to make up homework and homework quizzes Most of the grade falls on the midterm(4 tests make up the mid-term. He does not provide a study test or a study guide I asked for sample questions to study and they were barely similar to the tests. He uses a lot of math jargon Dont take unless good at math
Excellent teacher. I am terrible at math and this class was super fast paced so it was super hard for me. He took the time to make sure i understood the topics and gave me worksheets to do to as extra help to learn the material. Im signed up to take him again for calc 1. He is willing to work with you through whatever. I highly recommend him.
Was a great semester we covered everything and he went over any homework questions in class. Homework had no due dates and he genuinely cared about the content and how well we were doing in class.
Probably the best math teacher I have had so far. Although the class was going at a fairly fast pace, Professor John was always available at office hours to solve any problem. You can tell he's really passionate about math, and he passes this on to his students. I suggest you sit in the front because he can speak a little soft sometimes.
John might be the only teacher at Santa Fe that has adapted well to the online format. He is easy to understand and is very comfortable teaching math. I appreciate that he has taught and studied at UF and therefore knows what we should expect. Very easygoing and works with students. Don't cheat! He has done this long enough to easily tell.
JP is the best math teacher. He cares about his students and makes calc a digestible subject. He had office hours 3 times a week and always provided feedback on our exams. He's super understanding (can get extended time on assignments for any reason) and super chill. The first time I took this class I got a 57, and now I got an 83 because of him.
I took him for Pre-Calc in the spring and am taking him for Calc 2 right now. I highly recommend him for both courses along with any other that are offered. He is great at introducing topics in understandable ways and brings a very good energy to the classroom/zoom call. My only criticism is that he expects you to know a lot of Trig identities.
Full disclosure: this was my second time taking the class, so it was easier for me than most. My classmates seemed to struggle a decent bit. The textbook itself is not really used, but the access code is required for all homework and exams. Homework helps a whole bunch. He can be a little long-winded and over-elaborate sometimes.
Professor John is the reason I was able to continue on my Calculus track unimpeded. If you take the chance to talk with him outside of class, do it. Show up to office hours and he'll really help you understand anything you're confused about. If he's going to fast for you, you can ask him to slow down or question him about what he did. He's a gem.
I took his hybrid class because COVID. He turned out to be an excellent teacher, very understanding, and responsive. A word of warning though, he is wary of cheating and if he even suspects it there can be problems. Be careful with your work, because if an attention to detail error looks like cheating he will suspect it and could act on it.
Took him for Calc 2 as a hybrid course for Fall 2020, absolutely phenomenal teacher. Attendance is not at all mandatory because all his lectures are recorded and posted to Youtube the same day. Homework helps you out a lot so do it, and if late don't worry, he gives out extensions like Oprah gives out cars. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFFICE HOURS!
Really nice, helpful, and understanding guy. However, I failed this class along with multiple others because the exams are so extreme compared to the homework. I have a feeling this is because of the online format and his teaching style didn't click with people bad at math, but I wish more reviews had warned me how difficult this class would be.
This professor was great!! Highly recommended. I failed this class once before getting to him, and he made things make sense for me. He had office hours 5 days a week, his tests were much easier than the homework, and he gave a reasonable (not too much, not too little) amount of homework. Great professor!
Cool Professor definitely knows what he's doing however, His Exams are made to fail and are completely different than what he tells us to study as well as different from the homework. The majority of the class ended up withdrawing after the 2nd exam since the averages for them were low 60's. He doesn't curve and his grade is off of 3 exams and hw!!
He was good at teaching during class but his tests were very very hard. Most of the class dropped after the second test. He is willing to help during office hours but puts extremely hard questions on the tests compared to the problems done in class.
Prof. Pfeilsticker is very helpful. I struggled a lot at first with this class and thought that I would get a C/C+. If you go to office hours and get feedback you will be fine. Review study guides and textbook chapter reviews before tests. Does not give extra credit but will replace your lowest grade with the final grade. Don't get discouraged.
This professor provides great in-depth lectures. His notes are easy to follow but I suggest you attend his lectures. He does post recordings of his lectures and has office hours to ask for help. His exams are tough but if you complete the homework and take notes, you'll be fine. 1 homework each week and study guides before exams.
I personally liked this professor, his lectures were well structured and he did an excellent job of giving examples and explaining concepts. I took his honors class, which I would suggest because it is not that different. Take his suggestions of practicing book problems, and doing the true or false quizzes, those are on the tests!!
Likes to go 10-15minutes over class time once a week or so. Very good lectures that are detailed and made easy to understand. Study guidehw before the test is very similar to the test. online format made it difficult to pay attention but he is always willing to clear up any questions and will work with you. great professor overall, better in person
Is very spotty when answering my emails in regards to pertinent work.
The hardest course I have taken so far. Was not easy getting an A. Many bang energy drinks and entire week studying for final exam. Tests are not ridiculously hard but make sure to study. I just make simple mistakes. He definitely tries to help you if you are not understanding something and is caring. Great professor overall
Lots of homework and hard tests
He is a good professor. He is kind and tries to help us, but he doesn't reply quickly. His test is a little difficult, so it will be hard to get good results unless you review it clearly.
Professor Pfeilsticker is a good educator but his homework assignments are on average 30-40 problems because he really wants you to understand the hard material so that you can knock the easy and average material on the test out of the park. Take your time to do the hw and really try to understand it and if you do you'll do great on the tests.
Great teacher
-Amazing exams which will force you to understand the concepts while not being tedious AT ALL -Great feedback. He'll answer most questions you have about an exam problem and even give you a hint sometimes, but you still have to understand it all. -Stellar lectures. Engage with him! -Challenging HW -You will not learn Calc. You will understand it.
Amazing professor. The dude is a genius. Other than the first two weeks, he doesn't take attendance, but the lectures are extremely important. The only grades for the semester, are 3 tests, 3 study guides, a homework grade, and the final. Take him if you can
One of the smartest professors ever. His knowledge in Calculus is expansive. He is caring and responds to emails fast and easily accessible in office hours. This class was very difficult to me, and required lots of practice and tutoring but that is the subject of Calculus. Professor Pfeilsticker is the best. Take advantage of office hours!
Professor Pfeilsticker is the best math professor I have ever had. I had him for Calc I and II and will be in his class for Calc III. He meets you where you're at, great at explaining things, and takes time to make sure you understand it. Tests can be tricky, but they more than doable if you study. Will be sad when I run out of classes with him!
ultimate math nerd teacher. He's super passionate about what he teaches, which isn't the best b/c he goes extremely into detail about every topic. He teaches way more than the typical calc 3 curriculum, and tbh I wish i skipped more class as my friends would tell me half of my notes were unnecessary for the test (which he doesn't clarify in class)
He is a very respectable person but just not my ideal professor. Very soft-spoken was hard to hear him the entire semester and I wasn't the only one who thought that. All homework and quizzes are weekly and online, with test in person on paper. Material was hard to pick up due to him cancelling a few classes so overall not my favorite.
Professor Pfeilsticker is a very passionate, educated teacher who clearly knows what he's talking about. However, this can lead him to focus on one small topic instead of teaching the whole lesson. He's very soft-spoken and can be hard to hear at times. He will reopen any homework or quizzes if you just ask. Overall, he's a great professor.
Professor Pfeilsticker is a wonderful math teacher and you can tell he is super passionate about what he teaches. I feel like he helps students understand in a more conceptual way than any other math teacher I have had in the past. His homeworks are a little long but he does that to help you really understand what you're learning. 10/10 professor.
Where to begin. Prof. Pfeilsticker is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. His lectures are beyond amazing. He is an extremely smart person and can answer almost any math question and if he cant, he researches until he finds an answer. He is super accessible in office hours and doesn't rush you or anything. Cant recommend him enough!
JP is a great professor, the material is just extremely difficult. He wants all his students to succeed and is very helpful in explaining things further when needed. The exams are 50% of your grade, and study guides and HW change it very little. Overall, he's a cool and funny guy, just a hard class!
JP is one of the best professors I have had! As someone with a limited background in math (I learned what calculus was 3 months beforehand), he managed to make Calc 2 not only understandable but also enjoyable. He also offers help and extensions in almost any situation, so as long as you communicate with him, you will have a great experience.
If you're looking to be anything besides a math major, I recommend another professor. Pfeilsticker's courses require an intense dive into all the material, and a complete understanding of the theory. It's a challenging course I wouldn't recommend to anyone besides math majors. Slow grader, grade heavily dependent on tests, and not the best.
Prof Pfeilsticker shows up late to class every day, and extends class over time. He has short and unorganized office hours, do not go to his office hours to expect that your questions will be answered. His teaching style is very confusing and I ended up just watching YouTube videos to learn everything.
Professor Pfeilsticker goes deep into mathematics whilst lecturing about Calculus 2 topics, some might view this as unnecessary, but when you put some of the conceptual stuff he teaches you into practice, it opens up a lot about math. Being Calculus 2, this class is bound to be difficult and you will need to study outside of class. Exam heavy.
I could not pay attention to his lectures because of how boring they were. If you have ADHD do not take his class, you have to have a bit of discipline to get through the class as the homework is really long and only due twice a week. Exams are easy though so if you have discipline you should be fine.
M. Pfeilsticker is a really caring professor. Class is a bit boring, mostly learned through the online homework and quizzes. He lets you extend deadlines, but you'll have to do it eventually, so be careful! You can miss a lot of classes and still be fine on overall attendance. We had 3 tests and a final. Will take him again for higher math classes.
Half the Calc 2 class received an A and everyone was in the B range. His tests have detailed descriptions of how each question is graded. He grades quickly; we would take the test on Monday and then receive the test Wednesday. Unlike some professors, he does not miss class as well. No new content on the final exam. Final exam prep was amazing.
John Pfeilsticker is a great mathematics instructor. If you're looking for the short answer on whether or not you should select him for your math class, the answer is that Pfeilsticker is a good choice. He will help you to the best of his abilities. Make sure you go through the true/false practice questions at the end of each chapter.
This is my second class with Professor JP. He's personable and lectures well. Attendance is key as he covers basics and expects you to tackle complex problems. He provides study guides and past exams for practice. While grading takes time, feedback is thorough. Homework is good practice, and he's approachable during office hours.
He conveys the information very well in an easy to grasp way. He uses student age slang and extremely light profanity which makes him personable. If you attend the lectures and take good notes you will not only pass but leave the class with retained information. The only downside is he tends to stand in front of what he just wrote on the board lol.
While he was a little soft-spoken, his lectures were excellent. The homework was not too difficult, and it wasn't a significant portion of your grade. The class mostly hinged on exams. The exams were quite difficult, so you must extensively study beforehand. He takes a while to grade things, which can be worrying if you need to know your score.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I took this professor MAC2312, MAC2313, and MAP2302. He is super helpful during and outside of class. He assigns 50 question homework sets per week but he is super flexible with due dates and will open up assignments whenever. He is one of the only teachers where his homework and study guides prepares you for the exam. GOAT
Professor Pfeilsticker is the most compassionate teacher at Santa Fe. He gets it if you miss a deadline and lets you extend it even until the last day of class. He lectures only on what will be included in the tests/exam and makes it obvious when to study something specific. Does not grade attendance either. Had two classes with him. Great man!
By far one of the best math professors I have taken. In terms of lectures he basically teaches straight from the textbook, conceptual definitions and all which I personally found to be a great help. 10/10 lectures. Plenty of examples for practice, you know what's on the exams. The grade is almost entirely based off of 4 exams so be aware of that.
He is an excellent professor in the sense that his lectures are engaging and target all the material necessary to pass. There are weekly homeworks that are online, but they aren't too terrible. One thing to keep in mind is that your grade is heavily based off of three exams and a final. The homework and study guide grades don't count for much.
3 exams + final accounted for ~75% of the final grade. I spent 12-15 hours on this class per week and still felt like I was behind and lost. Prof. Pfeilsticker is a kind and great guy, but the grading structure is brutal and lectures can be hard to follow (definitely watch other lecture vids and make sure you are sharp with your calc 2 and trig).
I've had JP for multiple math classes (Trig, Calc 1, Calc 3). He's usually a solid professor, but this semester he wasn't as available and seemed less engaged. The final exam was werid, with the class average being 60 despite it being easy. I tried reaching out about this but got no response. I'd recommend him, but he's not as reliable as before.
Does not care. He has no idea who you are, what class you're in or that you're in his class at all. He is always late and not respecrful of your time. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Professor is great in most areas. he requires you to hand write all notes. nothing is printed out except projects/activities. you will have to do group work. he is also sometimes late which extends class time by 10-15 min. 3 exams and a final. all tests equal up 75% of your grade. he cares about students and answers any questions quickly.
The exams are worth 75 percent of your grade. It's very difficult to prepare for the exams when you dont know what will be on it. The multiple choice questions are very easy to get wrong and they can hurt more than the free response questions. I would not recommend taking this class.
I would not recommend. The tests he creates are very difficult and completely different from the homework, notes, and lectures. He does not help you prep for the test. The class average was 55%; everyone failed except those who cheated on the test and final. Many students have to retake the class. He's always late, pushing the time back.
I wouldn't recommend if you already struggle with math. Consider taking another professor. He offers no extra credit, doesn't work with you. No test prep, reviews, or guidance. Frequently late or cancels office hours. Exams are 50%, final is 25% of your grade. Aim for 100% on all homework to stay afloat. not to scare U Good luck Hope you all pass!!
His lecture style worked perfectly for me. He was very good at giving you a conceptual understanding, and plenty of practice. The course isn't easy, but no Calc 3 class should be too easy. He does often show up late and go over class periods which sucks but besides that he is great. Gives a good amount of partial credit on FRQs on tests.
very millennial humor.usually late, and ends up teaching over time. I guess it could have been worse, but for context, this is the lowest grade I have ever received in my life.grade is 75% tests, and they are not easy.He teaches from the book and lectures felt like he was just talking to himself and writing it on the board for an hour.
started off liking him but it went downhill very quick. always late, always goes overtime. ur entire grade is essentially based on exams, & ur not provided basically any useful resources for studying. a million hw problems a week. no one got an A in the class. test average for the last 2 exams and final was in the D-F range. ridiculous. dont do it
DO NOT GET FOOLED BY THE REVIEWS!! He is not good at all at teaching, he actually is very hard and you must self teach yourself. The course is based off of 3 exams, 3 study guides, and one homework grade and THATS IT. Please save yourself, he doesn't speak english, he speaks math. He also isn't the best at interacting with the class.
Prof. JP is solid. I took 3 of his classes. Exams were worth 75-80% of the grade. He was late regularly; but, he was very flexible, teaches 5-6 classes per semester, and answers questions after class. He is passionate. I was never surprised on an exam. Study guides, homework, and past exams fully prepare you. For help, go in person (spotty email).
I took his Calculus 3 class which I already knew wasn't going to be an easy class. Half these reviews expected the class to be a cake walk and here I am sitting with a C+ in the class before my final because it is hard material. Always do your homework faithfully. Great teacher and caring when asking questions, but goes over time of class often.
Pfielsticker is one of, if not, the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. This guy's lectures are so hard to listen to because he mumbles to himself at the front of the class while he does the math with minimal explanation. His canvas consists of 3 test grades, 3 study guides, and 1 homework assignment. He is a slow grader too.
Don't take him!!! I spend all the time studying doing practice test, mock exams etc… He is very hard when it comes to testing. Because of him I wouldn't be able to transfer to UF.
Lectures are decent, usually go overtime. Tests make up a ton of the grade, and there is nearly no extra credit. Tests are extremely difficult, class avg for Test 3 and Final were below 60. There is a ton of homework too, he is really forgiving on due dates for HW, but there is still a ton of problems every week. Calc 3 is hard, he makes it harder
The final was awful.
He never answered the email went to office hours twice he wasn't there.
