If you're not a very motivated person, do not take the online class. It ended up being a pain in the ass and the tests were kind of difficult.
He teaches a boring subject and the online course gets old but he knows what he teaches.
Do NOT take it online unless you're a bio whiz. Unfair grading system, everyone did bad, hence a problem with the teacher, yet he didn't curve it for his teaching inabilities. Impossible to sit there and listen to those lectures, very monotonous.
Do not take biology online unless you are extremely well-disciplined. Study everything for his tests:notes for lectures, the slides, the recommended reading, the practice tests, and the practice quizes. You will fail if you don't try hard.
Very difficult course, not a very good instructor or personable human being, robot like in nature.
Boring but easy, not a bad teacher, it's an easy class though
This class is really hard to take online. Even if it is an easy-level Bio class, it was difficult.
Easy class, pretty boring, but easy
I took this online, and it was a big mistake. The tests are frequent (9 per semester), short tests, but hard! Find a different science to fill your requirement, or atleast don't take it online
This class was soooo boring! It's hard to sit and listen to hours and hours of Bio lecture on your computer. He doesn't tell you what to study or anything. You have to be very disciplined to take this class...If you want an easy A, find something else!
Boring class, but interesting topics covered. His tests are very hard, lots of short answer. He does not tell you what to study. The good thing is is that he gives you printed notes so you don't have to take any in class.
The class is really easy but just a little long. He tends to get pretty monotone. The printed notes are really nice. If you go to class and half-way pay attention and just review your notes before the online tests you won't have a problem getting an A. He also offers ex credit for going to lectures.
Incredibly boring to listen to. The lectures will easily put you to sleep. The book is practically worthless. I didn't use it at all during the semester. Most of the information needed for the tests is in the lectures. Boring but easy, with a teacher who can't communicate very well.
The lectures are incredibly boring! If you take the class, don't buy the book- you really dont need it! He gives you no idea what you need to study. Everything on the tests is pretty much in the lectures, but there is so much material that it is impossible to know everything. I hated this class!
ok, this is an easy A class... i slept through the lectures, and made sure to memorize the numbers that we got in class... also, it's important to go to every lecture in case there's a movie.. there is actually a bit of info on the tests from the movies... good class, although i didn't learn a lot
I took this class online and it was very difficult. Notes were hard to follow and confusing
This is the worst professor ever. It seems he enjoys seeing how hard he can make the tests. I have a 3.9gpa and took this class and struggled through it like crazy only to get a B-. He asks little facts, and expects you to know details about stuff he never covered in lecture. DONT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!
I took the online version, shoulda had an A but ended up with A- cuz the quizzes are kinda hard. They ask very detailed questions for a general bio course. lectures are super boring but watch 'em all for the quizzes, don't need book
VERY boring...I've taken his online class and unless you can sit and listen to a monotone lecture for 30 min. on average, AND you have an amazing memory, I recommend finding another professor!
Evolution- This is the worlds most boring teacher. His lectures are monotone but his tests are okay. I had to use my book - couldntstay awake for class.
I took this class online and it was terrible. His voice is so monotone and each lecture is about thirty minutes. For one test you listen to about ten lectures. Wouldn't recommend it at all, plus the tests are much more detailed than the lectures.
Makes lectures interesting and easy to understand voice
Interesting lectures with good examples especially later in the course. Easy to listen to voice once you get used to it. I took this course online.
I took 2 biology courses online with PROF Pleasants. All I can say is that they take their biology seriously in Iowa. Hard course but if you put the time into it, you learn a lot.
He's helpful and lenient
I took Bio 101, 173, and 155 online from him and it was easy. I'm reading these comments from people talking about how he's awful and I don't know what theyre talking about. The class was way easy you just have to actually study. I thought he was really helpful and nice.
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE!! Everyweek we watch 5-10power point lectures which are extremely boring and monotone(around 15-30 minutes a piece) and read suggested material. When you go in to take the weekly tests, they are EXTREMELY hard with ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you covered in the lectures on them. DO NOT TAKE IT ONLINE!
I do not reccomend this class AT ALL. He is not helpful at all. Doesn't feel the need to help students who aren't that great at biology. The lectures are soo monotone, and the tests have NOTHING to do with the lectures.
If you have to take this class, DON'T take it online. He knows what he's talking about but the lectures are so boring that it's hard to get through all of them-great examples though. The tests were unfairly hard--they were very specific while the lectures were pretty broad...and there are only 40 points possible with each question worth two points!
I took Biology 173 online and learned a lot of interesting things I didn't know before! Dr. Pleasants was always there to answer questions whenever possible, even if he couldn't answer them right away he still got to it before a test!
I took 2 online biology courses with Dr Pleasants and they were the HARDEST courses in my entire undergrad studies BUT I probably learned more from his courses than many of my other classes. He is tough, but you will learn some great stuff about biology.
Biol 101. (online) Do not need the textbook, just get the course notes. REALLY, boring online lectures. Easy to fall asleep to. Lectures contain large amounts of non- exam relevant material. Not as easy as it may sound.
I never used a book for this online class, and the lectures were fairly interesting considering I took this class as an elective. Most everything was great, except he was a little short in his e-mails. I liked that I could listen to lectures any time I wanted to, though. Pretty easy material but tests were a little harder.
I've taken both 101/173 online, same format and loved it. Lectures can be boring but I liked the material even though the classes were an elective for me. Tests do cover some random material but aren't too hard, homework is easy plus some E.C. at end, put in a little effort and you'll be fine. Don't buy book though, only need the lecture notes.
Online class so you can work when you want, but do not fall behind. I have asked questions online and the answers are useless. He treats you like an interruption rather than a student. The class was useful but boring. You do not need the book study the notes.
Not helpful at all during his office hours, very boring, do not take this class ONLINE, tests are crazy hard he says he isn't detailed but all his questions are VERY DETAILED, Study the notes, Do not get the book it won't help
Exams are incredibly hard. I have an excellent GPA but am doing very badly in this class. It is very frustrating. I asked him for help and he just told me to study more. He seems to know the material well but is not interested in actually teaching. I would love to know the average grade in my class, I bet my ~70% is one of the top grades :(
I would not recommend this class if you're looking for an easy 101 course. I maintain a 3.48 GPA and yet am not doing well here. When I e-mailed for help, he didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. He says his tests only cover what was talked about in class, but questions are too detailed. This class goes too in-depth for a 101 class.
I had him for bio 101 and 211. I don't know why people are complaining. The tests were straight from the lectures, and the class is really easy. If you have a decent short term memory it's an easy A. My cumulative is a 3.0...not spectacular by any means. But I got an A in both his classes.
You will learn a lot from his class I highly recommend anyone to take his class. His class is the best online class at ISU.
NEVER TAKE an online science class unless you love science. The class sounded easy from the beginning, but I was lucky to get a C+. I also went and talked to him, and basically said you better figure it out.
Online lectures are NOT fun to listen to but if you can retain information for a small amount of time the tests are very easy and straight forward. Not a bad class, with a little effort it would be an easy A.
I took the online class...its pretty simple. Everyone talked about how difficult it was but I didn't find this to be the case. As long as you study off of the lecture slides and complete the 1 point quizzes you will get a good grade.
Completely useless when you try to ask questions. The tests are extremely hard because they are based on one bullet out of hours and hours of powerpoints.
tests were way to hard for 100 level classand very boring to listen to
Very in-depth class. Tests tend to be focused around a relatively inconsequential part of the lectures. Would NOT recommend taking online!
Smoked the quizzes (had option to take numerous times) and homework (one attempt only). The exams are not like the quizzes. You MUST understand how biology WORKS/FUNCTIONS in order to do well on the exams. Few quiz questions on exams. DO the optional final at the end to boost your grade. Asked for help; didn't get any. I taught myself the material.
I took the online half semester course- DON'T DO IT. You have 5-8 hours of lectures every week and a test every week. If you don't study, you will fail. Even if you do study sometimes you still get a C. His tests are worded so poorly that even if you know the material, you won't get the correct answer.
HARDEST CLASS OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR GRADE AND EVEN WHEN YOU ASK FOR HELP HE WONT HELP YOU. I HATED THIS CLASS AND BARELY PASSED. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TALKING IT ONLINE OR FOR HALF A SEMESTER. HORRIBLE CLASS.
THIS GUY NEVER SHUTS UP ABOUT ANYTHING AND THEN MAKES THE TEST BASED ON HOURS OF WHAT HE SAYS. I am a dietetics major and have taken ocher, biochem, and the likes and let me tell you THIS FREAKING CLASS took the most time of any. I got an A in Ochem and a C in this class. Put that in perspective. DONT TAKE IT ONLINE IF YOU LIKE YOUR GPA
You are expected to watch literally hours of boring, white background lectures every week and then are tested over very insignificant details. Knowing the "big ideas" will do you little good, he likes to test on small stuff.
He didn't allow extra credit, or retakes. When I asked to meet in his office, he took a while to reply, then rejected my attempt to receive help.
It is absolutely ridiculous that a class taken by most for a required science fulfillment is this hard. If you don't know anything about science you will get a bad grade. The tests, over 2 weeks of material are 20 questions and cannot be taken more than once. He's not a bad teacher, he just expects too much from a captive audience.
Took the half semester online Bio 101. It was super easy. Yeah his lectures are a little dull but he explains things well. There are ungraded quizzes on the course website and the tests are almost word for word the same questions. Homeworks take you 15 minutes if you don't get distracted. I never used the textbook.
DO NOT TAKE AN ONLINE SCIENCE COURSE WITH HIM. This was a huge mistake, I took it thinking it was an A+ but i ended with a C+, it was hard, lectures are long and dull. Do not even think of taking a class with him, hard tests. I am a Bio major and it was harder than 212 for me.
BIO 101 XV is a lot of work because it's 3 credits in 8 weeks, instead of 16. It started after midterms and went until finals. You have to stay on top of the lectures if you want to do well. They're pretty boring, though. Only take this class if you absolutely have to. Buy the lecture notes but DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. I never opened it.
I took this as a filler class and I regret taking it. The online lectures can be really long and you have to listen to them otherwise you will fail the tests. Even though I did listen to the lectures and did the self-quizzes, I didn't do very well on the tests. He gives an optional final and replaced the two lowest tests with the final.
I took Bio 211 online and it was difficult because I did not put in time. ONLY TAKE IT ONLINE IF YOU DON'T PROCRASTINATE! His test are based on the lectures, but if you do not listen to all the lectures you will not do well. Take time to actually listen to all the lectures throughout the week before the test. Test are usually given every 2 weeks.
Regret taking this class. The lectures are very very boring and tests are hardly ever over what you've learned.
Unless you have extensive bio background, do NOT take the online section with Pleasants. The lectures are honestly good and he makes them fairly interesting but the 8 exams which are worth about 85% of the grade are extremely tough and unpredictable. I have a 3.7 in ChemE so I consider myself a decent student.. but this class will have you guessing
This class was a nightmare. If you suck at biology or anything science related like I do, I would recommend you taking the in class section instead of the online section. He didn't make time to meet with you and when you contact him for help he basically just said figure it out. The tests are extremely difficult and that's what most of the grade is
It's a shame the tests are such shots in the dark because I really like Pleasants and his lecture style. I felt like I learned a lot and actually enjoyed listening to the lectures and felt prepared going into about every single one of the 8 exams and the final.. hardly ever to even manage a B. Learned a lot, but probably shouldn't have taken online
Ok the only reason I took this class is because I needed a class to get up to 13 credits cause I dropped a class half way through the semester and it's the worst thing I've ever done. He's a good professor don't get me wrong his lectures are interesting most of the time but his tests are extremely difficult even if you go in prepared to take it.
First weeks are easy. Then it kicks and theres a test every week, the final test had two hours of lecture that I wrote out 8 pages of notes. His study guides are bullet points, and for test 7 it was 22 pages long undetailed in bullets, this is my 2nd time and I have failed both times. He held one review session and covered 50% of the chapter. AVOID
Class is half semester and you better be on top. Idk how he does the test but they are hard. Make sure you have time if you wanna take this class
I put in a reasonable level of effort for this class. I watched all of the lectures, took my own notes, and reviewed before taking any tests. The tests are very unpredictable and unreasonably wide in scope. You will have to make connections between concepts that are not evident in the material. Tests are a complete shot in the dark. Good luck.
I study pretty hard for the WEEKLY exams for this class, but still find myself not passing them. This class is very difficult and incredibly fast-paced. If you are unable to handle a LOT of information in a VERY LITTLE amount of time, do NOT take this class.
Honestly there are a lot of reviews saying this was difficult and it wasn't. You literally just need to watch the lectures and you're golden.
Lectures were long, and it was difficult to study for tests. It was unclear what information was going to be on the tests, and no study guides were available.
Test's are kind of a shot in the dark. Never really know what to expect. Lots of lectures.
Since Environmental Biology was an online class, you should be an independently motivated student to do well, but it's really not hard to get an A. He provides audio of online lectures that go along with lecture outlines that he provides. Just keep up with the lectures and jot extra notes on the outline. Don't forget the occasional assignments.
I took this class because it was basically my only option to achieve full credits at the last minute. It was the hardest class I have taken. Do not think that it will be an easy A. The grading scale is nice but it is extremely difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSES. He is a terrible teacher. I am literally failing his course. There are WAY better bio teachers than him. He is so old so he just does not care anymore. Hardest class I have taken at ISU so far.
I HATE THIS PROFESSOR. NEVER TAKE BIO 101 WITH HIM. Worst decision I have ever made was to take his course. TERRIBLE teacher.
f this class. do NOT take bio 101 online with pleasants. tests are impossible and theres no extra credit.
The information from the class was not difficult, but the way that the professor taught the class made this course an absolute nightmare for me. The tests were extremely difficult because he would not test on key subjects, but rather cherry-pick very specific information off his slides.
Do your self a favor and do not take BIO 101 with Pleasants. Honestly don't take any classes with him.
Don't take his class online! The class is very difficult with exams every 2 weeks and lots of homework that is worth almost nothing in the grade book. Exams are worth 70% of your overall grade and exams are 20 questions worth 4 points each. Take the in-class version!
I took his half semester online class (8 weeks). There was a test and a short homework assignment each week. To do well in this class I had to watch the online lectures (4-6 hours/module), do the self-quizzes (1 point each for completing), homework and review the exam guide for that module. It was a full semester worth of work in 8 weeks.
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken and was the first C I have ever gotten in my life. I took the half semester online class, and there was a large workload. There is a test every single week that has to be taken in the testing center and there is so much information for each test (5-10 modules, each 30 minutes long). Would not reccomend
DO NOT take this class. Tests are 80% of the grade. The tests are incredibly hard, he does not post study guides, and the lectures do NOT give an idea of what will be on the tests. He asks incredibly specific questions and doesn't ask key topic questions. This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken.
His lectures are long, exam notes unorganized and cumbersome, tests unpredictable and solely based on luck. You can work your butt off and still get just above average (which is very low). Unhelpful with questions and concerns. Do not take this professor if you can help it.
I took the 5 week version of this class during winter break. There were 8 units so I had to cover 2 units a week, which was real hard. It was entirely lecture-based with only a few hw assignments and a book that I never used. The lectures were recorded in, like, 2014, and he never talked to us, so I really didn't feel like he cared about the class.
This class was literally the death of me. I did about 7 hours of lecture a week. There are exams every two weeks & no matter how hard I studied, most times 10 hours per test, I only got one A of the 8 tests & I actually failed 4 exams. You can make up points for homework, but just take my advice and do not take this class or any other class w/ him.
So rude in his emails, not helpful at all, due dates always were changing for test terrible class
For sure a 0/10. He casually assigns 3-7 hours of lectures per week. Hardly any homework because exams are worth 80% of the grade. Terrible. If you can get into any other section of BIO101 do it, because it can't get any worse.
This is by far the worst class I have taken at Iowa State. Be ready for 30-minute lecture videos (Usually around 8 per unit), no objectives for you to know what to take away from his lessons, and extremely hard exams. There is no excitement in his lectures either, so be ready to sit there and be bored to death. Notes packet doesn't help either.
Do NOT take any class with him. Most of his lectures are at least 10 years old (mentioned the Bush administration in the present tense???). Provides zero learning objectives and tests you on any random detail he mentions in the lectures. The exams make up nearly all of the grades and you aren't given any indication what might be on them.
4-7 hours worth of lecture videos to watch with tests every two weeks that are worth 80% of your grade. I did not buy the book or lecture packet, just watched the videos. He is kind of rude and would recommend some bio background before taking.
Took 101 and 211, both online. Both are same format, 8 modules, each with an exam, self quizzes for participation, occasionally HW and 5-8 20-30 min lectures. If you watch the lectures(often on x2 speed) and glance over the study guide for the exams the class is an easy A. Watch the lectures and do the self quizzes and you will do fine.
Genuinely the hardest class I've taken. My pre-med, biochemistry major, roommate would look at the questions given and wouldn't be able to answer it. The tests are at the biol 313 level, there is absolutely no reason for this class to contain the in-depth material it does. Lectures just make everything more confusing so literally no reason to watch
DO NOT TAKE ANY BIO CLASSES WITH DR. PLEASANTS. HIS CLASS IS NOT PLEASANT. I took this class for credit last semester and his quizzes are insanely hard and almost impossible to get a decent score on. Lectures are hours long per week and he does not ask questions directly related to the modules but says he wants you to study each section by yourself
I took online BIO101 because I needed the credits and just wanted an easy course. Literally terrible. His exams have nothing to do with quizzes, homework, or his notes. He asks questions that are SO CONFUSING for an introductory course. I am an A/B student and have done terribly in his ONLINE class. Do not take it with him.
Would email about concerns and had no grace whatsoever with assignments, even if emailed in advance.
Took BIO101 with Pleasants to finish my prereqs for a major change. Jeez, Louise, man, his questions are just from left field sometimes, and I feel like studying the PowerPoint will objectively land you at a C, leaving it up to you to figure out the rest. There is no learning objs and no heads-up on exam content. If you can take anyone else, do so.
He was a good professor for online bio. I could have used a bit more involvement from him but I think he would have answered any questions I had if I reached out. I liked the ability to pace myself and it was an easygoing course with good lectures and not too overwhelming
The lectures are long and uninteresting, they are difficult to pay attention to which makes taking exams difficult. All of the assignments are busy work and you don't get anything out of them. I'm not entirely convinced that he grades anything and only sees whether or not you completed it.
I'm an engineering student and somehow this was one of the most difficult classes I have taken. There's 8 exams and each exam contains 15+ pages of notes of content. Exams are random and I'm pretty sure there's stuff on the exams we never covered in lecture. Everything else is easy but too bad because exams are the only thing that matters.
I am usually an A/B student, and I took this class online because I needed a science credit and thought it would be easy, but it was the opposite. There are around 8 hours of lecture videos every week. The exams are more than 80% of your grade. The quizzes you take before the exam are no help and there are no study guides as exams are just random.
Class was expected to be an easy 3 credits, but it was not such. Learning all of the slides content will, at best, get you a 75% on the exams. Added a strong curve this semester, which helps. Quizzes help very little, only good for cushion points. Exams are random, cost a majority of your grade, and some questions feel like they come out of nowhere
Avoid this class at all costs. Yes, it's a 101 class and yes it's a half-semester class. Sounds easy right? Not even close. Be ready for 6 to 8 hours of lectures to watch each week, 4 self quizzes to take each week, and exams that are worth 72% of your grade (lowest test score is dropped). As a senior, I've NEVER had to work so hard for an A. AVOID
Class was easy and lectures were fine. Make sure you study before exams.
Never, EVER, under any circumstances, take Bio 173 online. It is horrific. This man puts out 6-8 of lecture videos per unit, throws out one Packback every two weeks, sends a link to a $144 textbook that's not provided by the school, and says "Good luck." Questions on the tests are so random and impossible to remember. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!
All this class was was NOTES ON NOTES ON NOTES, and guess what 8 EXAMS FOR BIO 101 is absolutely ABSURD. SOME BS. It was the most challenging class I have ever taken at ISU. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The wrost professor I've had in my life. Refused to round my grade even thought I was 0.02% from the cutoff. He focuses on little things and refuses to meet with you if you need help. After 5 emails, he finally met with me and told me to just try harder - I was putting in 15 hours of studying a week. NEVER TAKE HIM - you have been warned.
BIO101 with this professor is no easy feat. Lectures are dense, exams are challenging, and you'll need to go beyond the slides to succeed. However, using tools like unstuck ai alongside the textbook can really help with study prep.
