He is a wonderful teacher who makes writing enjoyable for each of his students. His assignments and overall class time is fun. I would say he is one of the best English teachers I have ever had!

I loved this class!!! It was not a very hard class and Brother Poole made it extremely enjoyable. I loved our class discussions. This is what classes should be like at college. Fun and enjoyable and makes you want to learn.

Loved this teacher and this class! I learned so much about myself and about my writing that I changed my minor to English Education. Brother Poole is a GREAT guy! His main goal is to help you become the best writer YOU can become. He is VERY helpful, and really nice. He loves his students, and it is very evident. Can't say I was a big fan of this class.. It was very easy to get a good grade with very little effort.. I wouldn't take another class from him just cause I expected to learn more about English than to just write and be graded. Feel I didn't improve any in this class, but it might work for other people.

Brother Poole was amazing. He was so helpful and made so much time for his students. I am sad to be leaving his class. He definitely has a different way of teaching and it requires participation, but it is so worth it! If you have a good class, you truly become a family in the class! I would highly recommend him.

Brother Poole is a great teacher and this class was my favorite last semester! He really liked class discussions and let the class decide the grading rubric for all the papers. He assigned a couple writing assignments every week but they weren't hard. He was also very willing to help anytime students asked. I would definitely recommend him!

Highly Recommend. He lets student make the grading criteria so you know what you're being grading on. He was always willing to work with me to know what I needed to improve on. He was very fair on grading and gave you the grade you deserved. I loved going to class, lectures were interesting and made you want to participate. Also no research Paper.

Brother Poole is an awesome teacher. I took his class during 7-week break, and it was not bad at all. There are three papers throughout the whole semester. He lets students make the rubric, and allow students to redo their papers.

brother poole was one of my favorite teachers. His class is beyond easy and I felt like I already knew everything we discussed. The homework is simple with a few writing prompts and expressing your thoughts and two major papers where you can pick your topic. I would definitely advise taking him

English 251 with Brother Poole was amazing! We did read some (English classes do that sometimes), but the real gem was our discussions. Discussions on the book were open and everyone got to contribute, it was really fun and interesting to hear everyone's opinion. Highly recommended.

Bro Poole is incredible! I have never been a fan of English, but he made me love taking this class. His lectures were always interesting, and I loved going to class everyday. The best part about his class is that he pushes you to learn your way. He lets you decide how you are graded, and allows you to choose the topic of your annotated bibliography

Brother Poole is rare, in that the homework actually ties in very well to what is going to be taught in class. He uses the homework insightfully can powerfully without assigning hours of homework between each class. If I were and English Major, I'd take every class from him that I could.

He's very interesting and likes to do group discussion in a way that all the responsibilities won't fall on one persons shoulders which is nice.

I took YA Literature. I feel like Brother Poole respects his students. He listened to our opinions throughout the semester. The discussions on the reading material were a little boring from time to time, but as a future teacher I learned a lot from him. He has lot of experience in education and he is willing to share. He class was also quite easy.

He is very funny, and loves what he does. I would in no doubt, take this class again if I could. His class was a positive start to my day, and was inspirational. :)

Brother Poole is an awesome teacher, he is very clear on what you need to do, your only job is to do it. Not a whole lot of homework, really easy work load.

Awesome professor, made learning English fun and enjoyable. We got to pick the rubric for our 3 papers, and there were lots of group activities. Not a whole lot of homework, just occasional one page exploration papers that were super easy and graded simply of completeness of idea. Whether you struggle with English or like it, definitely take him!!!

Brother Poole, is awesome. His class is very hard though there is a lot of work. You read a lot and write some. Do not fall behind and you should be good. He makes the hour and a half class very bearable.

I'm so glad I took this class from Bro. Poole. The expectations for the class is clear and there's a lot of reading but I learned so much that I can also use outside of the classroom. He cares about his students and strives to hear out all the students. His classroom is a safe place to voice your opinions. You will not regret taking his class!

Really awesome teacher, great personality and engaging teaching style. He has the class make all the rules/rubrics/guidelines for research papers and things like that. It is very obvious that he cares for each of his students and he is willing to go out of his way to help you. If you can, take him! You will not regret it.

Brother Poole was a really good Professor. He was very clear about what he expected of his students. He did not focus heavily on grammar, rather, he focused on the quality of our writing and opening our eyes to the world. Most of the time, coming to class is mandatory. The assignments are all useful. The books tend to be dark but are easy reads.

Brother Poole is the most helpful English teacher I ever had. The first few weeks are A LOT of reading. But, when it comes to the papers. He holds individual and group conferences and gives you individual feedback on how to improve. Which you can apply and resubmit for a better grade. He really wants his students to succeed, which is so important.

I HATE English, I'm not any good at it. but brother Poole is THE BEST professor. There is a lot of group work, but they are fairly graded. Kicked a guy out of the class for skipping out on the final project; So no slacking in this class. Also, ONLY TWO ABSENCES are tolerated. Every time your absent after the two 5% off your grade. So no skipping!

Brother Poole is the beat. He gives specific requirements and let's everyone know what is expected. He grades your papers by having them read aloud to him in person. It turned out to be a very positive experience. He is one of the best professors I have ever had!

We did a ton of reading but the class is very discussion based and Brother Poole loves laughing and having fun with the class. He is one of the few teachers who understands that learning is about so much more than knowing facts; it is about learning and growing. His class enlarged my understanding in ways that I NEVER expected from an English class. He is also very personable and will work with you if you struggle with English. Brother Poole is by far my favorite teacher! He really cares about how you are doing in the class and actively helped me not to be stressed out while we were doing important papers. You will need to do your best in his class and we did do a quite a bit of reading, but he's worth it. He challenged me and helped me to become an overall better writer.

I took him for summer session. The first two weeks the workload was really hard. But after that it's pretty easy. He spaces out the essays so you won't be overloaded writing them. It's just the reading during the first two weeks.

I had a lot of technical issues with the online class, but he was very patient and helped get caught up. He didn't over complicate things, and I really felt like he cared about the students.

I've always hated english classes, but Brother Poole made it very bearable. We had to read 4 books rather quickly as part of the material, but it all culminates into the same papers. He's honest in his feedback on essays, BUT he gives you chances you change your grade after the initial paper submissions. Essentially guarantees you an A in essays.

Brother Poole is very forgiving. You do read a lot in his class but all of the books that you read are amazing. He gives great feedback on papers. And his lectures arent long or boring. I felt like I learned a lot from him.

Your grade in the class is mostly determined from two big papers, but you are allowed rewrites. There is also quite a bit of reading, however the assigned books are very engaging and worth reading. He will deduct 5% from your grade for every absence after 2, unfortunately, so make sure to not skip class.

Brother Poole is GREAT! He is very organized and schedules the HWs so it is doable and we don't get bombarded with assignments. Read 6 books but enjoyed them. He is SUPER caring, willing to help and makes an effort to know each of us. He is calm, down to earth and reasonable. He is nice but not too nice that we'd lose our grip. I'd recommend him.

We read a lot in his class but I never felt overwhelmed because he always gave us time to do the work and he was able to reach after class for questions, etc. Great class discussions as well! Brother Poole is one of the most caring professors I've had. I always felt supported by him and it's obvious he cares about his students a lot. There is a lot of reading in the class, but he gives lots of time to get it done, and the assignments are pretty self explanatory and easy. Brother Poole required a few papers to be written, however the material that was being covered was extremely unique and offered a view on diversity that was exceptional. If you are looking to spice up your English class, take this one. There was a lot of reading, but it was interesting material. Great teacher, great feedback!

Bro. Poole is my favorite teacher Ive ever had. Hes extremely caring and articulate. He truly wants everyone to succeed and we have the greatest discussions in class. Hes sensitive to your personal needs. Its a reading heavy course but he does a great god of making it enjoyable. Helps the class bond. Provides lot of extra credit and rewrites.

Brother Poole is exceptional at his job and whatever he is being paid is not enough. He cares about you and your work, and he is very accomodating to people with special needs. I was always engaged in his class, and he talked about topics I was passionate about. He gives excellent feedback and lets you choose the grading criteria. Highly recommend.

Quite possibly the best teacher at BYUI

John Poole is absolutely amazing! He has been by far my favorite teacher I have had. He is passionate about his subject and is taking classes himself to continue learning and improving as a teacher. He gives several easy writing assignments to push critical thinking, but he is far more concerned with mindset than writing ability. All in all 12/10.

Classes are fun and interactive, He really cares about students and is always seeking for help. Great teacher, HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I loved Brother Poole! It seemed clear to me that he was there for the students. He was kind, respectful, and funny. He was always willing to help you and answer questions. He has high expectations but helps you along the way! Definitely not the easiest class but doable!

Great teacher! There's a lot of writing but he doesn't care too much about the tone of context of what you write (except for maybe the big essays). Classes are engaging and we often have discussions about problems people are facing and real world things like that. Would take again!

There is a lot of reading for this course, but they are amazing books. He has been my favorite professor at university, he creates a positive classroom environment. He was understanding when some books were sensitive for me and was willing to accept an alternate book to read. I would take him for every class if I could. He is an amazing teacher.

This class is very reading heavy but audiobooks made it easy. Brother Poole is so awesome. He has a lot of teaching experience, even in alternate high schools. He is so understanding and compassionate. He really made our class feel connected which led to some awesome discussions and lasting friendships.

This class was typically easy. There was an assigned book every week which was hard to keep on top of but other than that I really enjoyed his class. An hour and a half for this class was not needed at all, very long and slow, sometimes extremely boring. This class covered lots of heavy young adult topics which made some discussions very personal.

Poole is an amazing professor. If you are still on the fence about becoming a teacher take a class from Brother Poole. He will make you excited to work with youth! If you are not an education major I would recommend him for general English classes that he may teach. He is very understanding and really wants you to succeed.

You can tell Brother Poole has a passion for teaching even in the first week; he loves what he does. This course had a lot of reading, but he is okay with students using audiobooks or any other method of reading. He regularly has the students play get-to-know-you games in the middle of class and it creates an amazing sense of community.

IF YOU ARE TAKING ENG 150 PLEASE TAKE IT FROM BROTHER POOLE. He was amazing, and you only write two actual essays through the whole semester. I've heard that other teachers assign an essay a week for this course, but he doesn't. He is my favorite professor I have had so far, he is absolutely amazing. Definitely take this class from him!
