Professor is one of the best professors at TMCC. He can make his class very interesting and fun at the same time. He is a great guy, real funny too!! Show up, pay attention, participate and do class work, you'll have an easy A. Don't let him intimidate you the first day, you will learn so much in his class!! GREAT PROF!!
Excellent. he knows his stuff- and makes sure you know yours by the end of class. You can easily tell that he loves his job and his chosen field. Highly encourage students to take his courses.
John is one of the greates teachers I have had at TMCC. In the top 5. His class is awesome!!! Although his class is easy for the most part, the real works comes when you have to do the test essays and final paper. Other than that, I would HIGHLY reccomend John to anyone interested in taking ANY History classes that he may be offering. I still have
John was a great teacher! Made a subject I despise become very interesting! His essays are typically hard for the history world, but he gives you all the information you need to study beforehand to do well. Take a class with Dr Reid!
Definitely one of my favorite professors! Mr. Reids class is challenging without making you feel like its impossible to pass. He takes the time to discuss any topics that the class feels particularly interested in and makes History extremely entertaining. Definitely a class worth taking!
In my opinion, very cool teacher. Makes the material fun and interesting. Definitely not a dull professor. The workload was not difficult and the assignments were engaging. One of the best classes I've taken.
Best Online Class I've taken, and I take a lot. Workload isn't too hard. Although he grades the essays pretty hard. He's very helpful and interactive. Highly recommend.
Pretty easy class except the essays. Assigns numerous 700+ word papers and grades them rather harshly. I wouldn't mind the harsh grading if it were an English class. Kind of silly when you get an A- because you get a 60% on an essay. Has nothing to do with knowledge of History.
Pretty interesting class. Reading the book book online, and taking the quiz later, easy. What's not easy, is the fact that the computer can generate a quiz from any version of the text. So your questions dont always match the text you read. He grades his Essays very harsh! You could have a A- in the class, just to watch it drop to a C-, or less.
Horrible instructor, no instruction, no feed back, took to long to answer questions if needed, and the most communication was feedback on lecture events at the college.I will never take a class with this instructor again especially not online.
the essays were hard, the resources were complex to find.
History professors are usually fun, and this guy did, to some extent, but the class was very politically correct and the full blown research essay that we had to write was graded harshly. not something i'd expect in a 200 level hist course. nice guy besides that. won't look you in the eye when you talk to him but he has a good sense of humor.
This was a great class. I learned so much history that I wasn't mature enough to be interested in back in high school. At 40, it was so enjoyable.
Very helpful if asked. Assignments are clear cut and as long as you fulfill the obligations of the rubric, opinion doesn't matter. Very open minded.
If you do the readings and participate then the test are only some what hard.
I really enjoyed this class and learned the material. Dr. Reid has very clear expectations and grades consistently according to the rubric. This course is both interesting and challenging.
I learned a lot of history in this class. It was impossible to get a perfect score on any quiz, but once you get the hang of the journals, it's not too bad. I actually enjoyed the term essay.
Very good instructor. Easy to approach if needed.
Every week you read a chapter and some extra documents Professor Reid provided, then take a quiz and write a journal. The quizzes are REALLY tough. The journals have gotten to be fun and include peer response. He does grade these rather tough. The term paper was fun and you got to get more personal with it. One of the best online classes I'v taken.
Extremely helpful just have to ask and flexible with due dates which i didnt mind at all ! absolutely take this class again, perfect if your trying to get your gen-eds out of the way!!
the class is really easy, I just wish I was more motivated but it was just not the right class for me I guess.
I have disabilities that make essay questions hard for me to answer. I made an appointment with Professor Reid and we worked out a suitable agreement so that I will be able to do my very best on the essay portion of the exam. Professor Reid in my opinion wants everyone to succeed.
Awesome teacher overall.
Mr. Reid was awesome! He is responsive, easy going, and scholarly. Hes feed back alone provided me with the motivation to complete work on time.
John is a nice teacher, and he is helpful, I like this group.
John is a nice teacher, and he is very helpful, this group is also great.
Great instructor. Need more clarifications in lectures sometimes.
He is open to suggestions! Covers everything you need for tests and papers in class, so being in class really helps your grade. Fair and fun. And nice.
I learned a lot about America that I did not know before. The instructor gave us other reading assignments in addition to the required text which broadened the view of things better and were not one sided. I highly enjoyed this course.
Great professor!
Very Interesting course material and clear instruction. Great slides. Willing to answer all questions. Open office policy. Fun and energetic.
lots of reading and quizzes.
Great class
Professor Reid read all of the postings and papers submitted and gave good feedback on all of them.
Dr. Reid provides you with everything you need to pass the class. As opportunities arise, he has given assignments for extra credit. Class is engaging and thought provoking. Study and know the material. I would recomend this class to anyone that needs to take history.
I had John for both 101 and 217 and both were good classes. If you ask for help you will get it and neither class was tough, just do your work.
For a history class you cannot get much better. if you show up you will do good in the class.
Being an online class, there wasn't really any face-to-face interaction, but I still feel I learned a lot from this class. I liked the feedback on the journals, instead of just a plain grade.
This course was already interesting to me at first, but the choice of text and the additional materials that Reid supplied gave me a deeper understanding to the reality of history. If I mentioned in a journal that I didn't understand something clearly, he was always ready with an explanation or a link that further explains the topic.
I never met Dr. Reid since this was an online class. However if I ever had an issue or question he would quickly respond. The syllabus clearly outlined the course, assignments and expectations.
Professor Reid is a wonderful teacher with a heart for his students. Turn in your assignments, read your book, respect him, you'll be fine.
Dr. Reid should be Dr. Read. But if your just trying get an easy credit, your in the wrong place. You will learn U.S. History, all the good, bad, and ugly. I would definitely take it again because I believe I am prepared academically for the next level by taking this class. If you want a degree, and don't want to read, go to a anther school.
This professor is amazing! The lectures were spot on. All the students in my class were enthralled and captivated by his Aristotle-like delivery. He is the bees knees of the department and the school. If you need history credits for your degree this is the gentleman to take. If you are majoring in History ... his classes are a must.
Although this class is online, there wasn't much to really do. Just need to read the textbook, and participate in the weekly discussion with the class.
John has a good plan down for how class should go. He manages to stay interesting and keeps the material current to how it relates to the modern day. His decision to forgo expensive texts for the class was particularly nice. Make sure you don't forget to make your 2 replies for discussions as they have to be done 24 hours after your 1st post.
Dr. Reid made this class fun. He likes to joke around to ease the tension and make the topic fun. He was also very clear on what he expected from the students on the assignments and gave great feedback. The syllabus was changed a few times, but he gave notice each time and made sure students knew what updated assignments were. Highly recommend!!
He has every thing laid out for you. every single handout that he will use all semester he gives you at the beginning in this packet very helpful and easy. He also has the essay questions in the packet that will be on the mid term and final.
great teacher! a lot of writing, I MEAN A LOT! but this is what sharpener your writing skills and also the reading skills. Enjoyed the class very much
John has a passion for history and it shows in his curriculum. I took his Fall 2016 class and this was my first returning to college class in about 10 years. I was pretty apprehensive about going back to school. The way John teaches the class really puts you at ease and if you do all the packet work that pe provides you will do really well.
John is an amazing teacher, he makes going to class fun which feels odd to say. He is extremely goofy and will keep you entertained and engaged the whole class. You do have to read and it is best to show up to class. He gives you a packet full of study guides and his slides! I went to test reviews and got all the answers to the tests there.
This class was very easy. Quizzes every week, discussion posts, and two small papers due at the end. The quizzes are easy, all of the answers are found in the materials given, and you get 2 chances. The discussion posts are pretty straight forward and easy. And the papers are simple, small and easy options.
I hated history until I took my first class with Dr. Reid. He has a realistic view on history and the textbooks that go with it. He is smart, funny, logical, fair and a fantastic teacher. I ended up taking 4 classes from him just because they were his.
This professor was awesome! He was caring and made class fun. We had group work that was easy as long as you participated and every day we would have an entry and exit ticket which were easy as well. I learned a lot and the midterm was easy as long as you studied the entry and exit tickets. I wish I would have participated more.
Prof. Reid is amazing and I would recommend him. His tests and quizzes are hard but he gives you all the answers ahead of time, you just have to study them. If you study and pay attention, you'll pass. He isn't underhanded or sneaky, you'll have time to prepare for all the tests and he is very helpful. He is entertaining and funny also.
Reid is a goof and a gaff, but more importantly he's a good teacher. Reid knows what he's talking about, and clearly enjoys the subject. The textbooks are cheap, and actually useful. The only hard part of the entire class was the 8-10 page research paper at the end. Even that was interesting though.
This was the easiest online class in the world. Do the study guides and you will pass.
If you do the study guides, you will pass the class. He lets you send in essays ahead of time to get feedback, he's very nice and a rather easy grader
He's a good professor but he lectures the whole class which gets really boring. When It comes to writing essays for him his prompts are unclear. Tests and quizzes are easy if you do your homework and study.
Absolutly one of the best teachers of my whole life. As long as you have a deep passion for history you will go great and get along great
Great teacher! Great textbook to read, pretty easy quizzes and one paper. Learned so much from this fast track class online. Great great teacher! Everyone should take a US History class for refreshment!
He was an incredible professor, and challenges everyone in the classroom to actively participate. Its was difficult to leave the class without laughing or smiling at some point, and in-class group projects to gather multiple perspectives. Make sure to bring your books to class and stay on top of the readings. Nevada history, first hand.
His was one of my favorite classes at this school. Lectures were engaging. He added group projects such that we got to know other people and weren't learning alone, but didn't have to rely on others for our grades either. He knew material well. I do think that the only grades in the class were tests though, so beware if that's not your strong suit.
Online classes can be difficult to navigate. I found Professor Reid's class to be well laid out and consistent. There is reading and quizzes every week and he gives plenty of instruction as to what will be on the quiz so you can study effectively. I liked the recorded lectures, made it more personal.
This class was easy and all lectures were marked at 2 points of extra credit. Homework was only 1 multiple choice quiz per week, and there was 1 midterm and a final. The only thing was that if you skim the readings, you will struggle with the midterm and final essays.
Professor Reid gives a great lecture followed by group work to finish the class. Great guy and sets you up perfectly for his test. If you get a bad grade in his class its on you, not on him.
I took Hist111 online and it was really easy as long as you follow the module. He was organized and graded my assignments fairly. I just wish he made more mini-lectures as I enjoyed them the most.
Although there are many assignments and notes, they are easy to complete and are actually useful. The topics are given in the key words and focus questions documents, if you take good notes, the quizzes will be easy. I overall really enjoyed this class and felt I learned a lot of new information.
This was a quite easy and fun course. There were group discussions each class, which was fun (it helps to gather various perspectives from different people). Overall, HIST 102 with Prof Reid was one of the best classes I have ever taken at TMCC.
Professor Reid was one of the best professors I've ever taken. He was always joking around and made class fun. He was always fair when teaching. He gave little to no homework. 10/10 would take again.
Prof Reid is super whimsical? He's like somebodies cool Dad. He's super passionate about history and really laid back, but you should definitely be prepared for A LOT of reading and the notes (for a grade) are meant to be super in depth, but he slays TBH
Most work was online, so it was convenient. He made his lectures funny and interactive and would put us in groups with cards. He made the class so much fun and made us laugh. 10/10 recommend, but he does talk a lot and go over a lot, but he does make the experience worth it and fun.
Very straightforward, nice, and pleasant class experience.
Amazing professor--very laid back and likes joking with students. Attendance was taken each class but not part of grade. Basically hands you the test answers if you do the study guides. All lecture material available online--PowerPoints and video recorded lectures. Small group work at the end of each class discussing material.
Goated teacher my god. If you can muscle through a couple hours worth of notes to get a decent comprehension about the material - you'll do just fine. That being said the lectures are engaging and the topics about Nevada are really entertaining.
He's a great professor. General class structure each week is you take notes on the textbook chapter (available free online) and the short lectures (about 20 min each) and then do a short assignment where you answer 4-5 questions and then take a 10-15 question quiz. Then the exams are the same questions from the quiz. Easy pass and a cool professor!
Amazing class, he is super funny and kind. Tests are easy as you can make s study guide. Would definitely recommend!
I adored this class. Professor Reid is both hilarious as well as passionate about the subjects he teaches. He has us break into groups each class which is an awesome way to get to know your classmates and make new friends. I loved all the quirky inside jokes our class now has and everything I was able to learn in that class. I absolutely recommend!
He did not like one of my papers so he had me do it over and over again. did not let me do my other assignments until he was satisfied with the one. The rest of the assignments were docked points for being late even though his fault they were late. He also doesn't give full points for "the standard" you only get full points if you do extra work.
I was on the fence at first of whether or not I was going to enjoy professor Reid's class, as an email exchange I had early on came off a bit dismissive. Luckily I quickly learned just how much professor Reid cares for the subject of history and his students. If you spend a good amount of time on the notes, the rest of the class will be a breeze.
Has a very organized and simple class, completely paperless and works with you. Very kind a funny and cares about his students. Class was overall easy and has his lectures recorded. Highly recommend!
This professor's class is incredibly frustrating. His notes are poorly organized and hard to understand, making it difficult for students to grasp the material. His grading is excessively Harsh and particularly for non-native English speakers. Do not waste your time taking this class! This is my two cents! Very disappointed with TMCC this prof.!
My experience with TMCC has been quite negative, and I believe the administration should thoroughly review this professor's teaching methods and grading policies. It's crucial to evaluate how well he accommodates students from diverse backgrounds to ensure that all students have a fair chance to succeed. Please do not waste your time taking his cl
This professor does not have any experience with diverse students and their backgrounds like where they are coming from. Do not recommend taking this class to anyone! Not pleased with this instructor. :((
Awful teacher. I suggested him to chill with the group work because it's random and that doesn't work well in college. He didn't take that lightly and threatened me to drop his course. Sources are hard to read and use the word for black in Spanish. Slideshows are messy and go too fast to take notes. Overall Awful teaching. Take Holly Smith.
Nice guy and everything, but probably one of the most harsh graders I've encountered. Multiple recorded lectured a week, as well as a weekly quiz and assignments. Your notes from the lectured are mandatory and graded as well. Not the class for you if you hate reading!
Thinks he's hot stuff and you can tell he has an inflated ego. He's probably taught the course the same way the last 500 years and is stuck in is ways.he's a professor at a community college and thinks he's teaching at Stanford the way he teaches and grades. Go take a history course from a prof that cares about their students.
History 111 is really laid back. You watch some lecture videos, take note which are graded, a quick assignment and a quiz every week. you can knock this out in a day and it is easy. He is helpful if you have questions and seems like a good person.
Taking this class to fill a requirement to transfer to a University. Don't take this class if you work fulltime or have any other obligations other than school. He is a super harsh grader and doesn't understand the meaning of the word optional. In order to get full credit you have to do assignments he considers optional.
Reid is knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. However, the way he teaches you that knowledge is borderline sadistic. You are graded for notes (Bullet points are not acceptable) of his lectures with timestamps as if he isn't the one who recorded it. If he doesn't like your notes, you won't be able to do that week's quiz :)
He is very passionate and knowledgeable about history. He does make us get into random groups each class. We kinda have to teach ourselves bc the majority of the time we must read an old article and answer questions as a group, for us to discuss to the whole class the articles can be difficult bc it's old and from the 1700-1900s all primary source
He's fantastic. Gotta do the work but he's fair and nice. Would love to take more classes
