awesome teacher-great class b/c it was fun and very informative-i would take him again-i highly recommend his classes b/c he really interacts and becomes friends with his students
i really enjoyed this class. He is funny and gets off track a lot telling stories.
My favorite professor, funny guy and he knows his stuff!
he's such a great professor and really be-friends the entire class. he's really funny, and loves to tell stories. study your notes from class..and you'll do fine on the tests!
GREAT professor. He is really funny & makes that class not boring. He knows his material very much & goes out of his way to help his students succeed in class.I would tell anyone to take him.The tests are not that hard as long as you take good notes.
I thought that this would be the worst class, but this class turned out to be the best class I had all semester. Rice is an awesome teacher and can make the most boring topic seem fun and exciting. I really enjoyed his class. He is a must have!!
I really thought the class would be boring b/c I really didn't know much about the topic, but I have enjoyed it so far. He is ALWAYS there if you have questions or about the exam. Dr.R is an awesome and teacher & really cares about his students.Take him.
I LOVED this class. It's one of the best classes i've ever taken. He's super funny and tells the best stories. He was a really really really good teacher. I'm looking for him again in future registrations.
Awesome, amazing teacher. Study for the tests and you'll do fine. But study. And read his lecture notes online. His lectures were so interesting and he relates with his students well. One of the best teachers I've ever had.

Very funny and nice. Make sure you read!! If you keep up with the class notes and readings you'll be fine. I've enjoyed this class.
KILLER Prof.you will enjoy him and get the relation of the subject matter to life
pretty good teacher. He tends to drag on with his stories. He doesnt know when to cut off people in the class, sometimes he just needs tell them that they are morons and to switch majors. Reminds me of John Goodman .....think Roseanne
I would just look over the supplemental reading and study from my notes in class. Pay attention, study the notes & you'll do fine. He makes the subject interesting. Extremely caring and very entertaining. My favorite prof. so far. Very kind and jolly man. :)
I really enjoyed this class. Rice is such a nice person and he really tries to make the subject matter interesting and relative. I definitely recommend taking him!
Rice is the best SOC professor at UNCW. Gives essay-only exams, but will give credit for almost anything you write. Always in a good mood, tells tons of great personal stories, and gets off track easily. Just read the online lecture notes and you can get an A- easily. Reminds me of a cross between Santa Claus and a confederate Civil War General.
I got 2 A's in his class so i reserve the right to say that even though hes a teacher good hes overated.....dont bother reading the stupid texts he makes you buy all the tests are from the notes...he comes off as being kinda cocky....coming from someone who took 10 years to finish he BA...But hes a nice guy....Anyway a lot of memory and a paper
Good teacher. He talks a lot and easily gets off the topic. Dont really need to buy the books, all tests come from the notes.
Easy, yet kind of boring.
avoid
awesome teacher...I was going through a really tough time when I took his class and I let him know, therefore he worked with me unlike most professors! I would suggest taking him!
Great professor. Likes to tell the same story 32587382952 times and talk about his daughter ALL the time, though. But, his tests are all essay. So, just make sure you study your notes. I never even bought the book. Most of his notes are online, anyway. Loved him.
He's by far the best Soc professor that I have had. He's always enthusiastic and willing to listen and help. Wish he was the teacher of all my soc classes.
Dr. Rice is an awesome professor. He makes the material easy to understand and remember. He always goes over old material while still presenting the new. I love his stories and found him to be absolutely entertaining and hilarious.
He's pretty much one of my favorite professors ever. He's such a nice guy and i love the way explains things and his stories are funny. I dont really like the essay section of his tests and the lack of a real "textbook." When i say real i mean a book with actual definitions and concepts...its just readings...kinda lame
Tests consist of memorization of which theorist said what in lieu of grasping sociological concepts. I know more of his life than of sociology due to his lectures. swear to god class should be called john rice 105. 2 tests + 5 pop qiuzzes + final equals grade. Both(thats right you need two) readers (not even a textbook) are dull and annoying.
Mr. Rice is a great professor. He always has interesting stories to tell. He explains the subject in a way that everyone can understand. He puts all of his lecture outlines online. The tests are based on those outlines for the most part. The tests are easy if you study,
I love him! He is the nicest guy ever and so smart and helpful! If all teacher were like him I might actually like school!
Nice guy, puts lecture slides online but you have to be in class to understand them.. Half the course was self-taught from the 'textbook'.. Tests are difficult if you don't read the text and don't memorize the names of the author's for each article..
Good teacher. Quizes are all from the book readings, and dont count for many points. Only three tests the entire semester including the final which was hard. If you study and prepare for the class you will do fine!
He's a nice guy but the material isn't all that interesting. Pop quizzes happen every once in awhile and they're all from readings in the textbook. 3 tests total with multiple choice, matching, and essay.
Is very easy to get off topic and talk about his daughter, mother, and wife. Gives three tests throughout the semester, if you read the readers, textbook, and notes you should be fine. 5 quizzes are given throughout the semester to "boost your grade" but they are worth 2 points each and come out to only 10 points. I would reccommend!
Great professor. I absolutely loved Dr. Rice's class. Each class was interesting and it is super easy for him to get off topic. Test can be difficult if you don't study. I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Rice. Sit near the front, participate in class and ask him if you need help.
One word to describe John Rice, crazy. He is a complete scatter brain, he goes off on tangents that are completely irrelevant to lecture. His class is extremely boring and the test are beyond hard. Not to mention this class a ton of out of class readings. My only C in college is thanks to this horrible class! BEWARE OF JOHN RICE!
Hands down best professor. Has had him twice already and no regrets..take him!!
take his class
Great instructor, interesting and energetic; talks a lot about his family and his life, which often relates to his points and actually helps a bit with understanding. Fantastic class, my favorite instructor so far. Would recommend!
He's hands down one of my favorite teachers. He's adorable and full of energy. I'd recommend going to class because you won't understand the powerpoints if you dont. Read the books and you should do fine on the tests. He tells you when quizzes are. Definitely recommend taking his class. All you have to do is put in some effort and read. Love him!
One of my favorite professors. He's very high energy and engaging; a lot of life experience to share. He really knows and loves Sociology. Make sure you read! A lot of test questions come from articles in the books. He makes lectures fun and encourages discussion. Take his class!
GREAT TEACHER!! He loves what he does and he does it well. He has a lot of good examples for what he is teaching. As long as you read and do the study guides you should do great on the tests. Definitely choose this class with Rice as one of your basic studies courses!
He is hilarious and very sweet. He is one of my favorite instructors! His tests are pretty easy except for the essay questions. There is a lot of reading from the textbooks. Pay attention in class and you'll do fine.
Dr. Rice is a really good teacher. Take lots of notes (it isn't too hard) read the text book and your life will be a lot easier. The only problem I had is his grading system. It is out of so many points, so if you get a C on one test, then there is no way you can get an A in the class. That is frustrating. But overall a great teacher!
This guy looks and is as jolly as Santa. He is the man and loves what he does. Great guy, but the tests are a little difficult. He words them hard but it is possible to ace them if you study
LOVE HIM. He is so entertaining and a funny man. He reminds me of santa, and is so happy everyday. The tests are pretty hard, and you have to read the material and study. If you do the assignments and come to class you will pass easy. His essays are HARD.
He is awesome. Point blank. And extremely intelligent and entertaining lol. You will love him.
He's nice, but his tests are hard. I was struggling to complete them because you only have 50 mins to answer 40 multiple choice questions and write at least 1 page essay. On the second test he was asking for a lot of percents which I thought was kind of ridiculous to expect us to know them off the top of our heads.
Great professor, he's truly passionate about what he's teaching. His tests can be pretty hard and difficult to complete in only 50 minutes, but if you study it's not too bad.
Summer class. Very easy. he does look a lot like the Tim Allen Santa! He is really sweet explains stuff very well. I hate sociology but he made it pretty interesting. He is pretty unbiased too, just gives the facts (hard to come by in the Soc. Dept.) Don't get the book. All essay tests. Go to class and listen, easy A.
I LOVED DR. RICE! As a sophmore, he is still my favorite professor. He makes class SO interesting and makes everything so easy to learn. The tests is everything he teaches in lecture. He's funny and compassionate, for the subject and his students. All around AWESOME guy!!
Dr. Rice is absolutely hilarious. Sociology is kind of a dry subject, but he is entertaining. The tests are hard (around 50 questions and a 1 page essay) but as long as you study the lecture notes you should be fine. The class definitely isn't an easy A.
Rice is a funny professor and he is very passionate. Attendance is mandatory. For someone not incredibly interested in the subject.. its a bit dry. His tests are pretty tricky especially if you don't pay attention in class, read the textbook and study a lot. If you're looking to be entertained but try a little, definitely recommend it.
Possibly the best professor I have ever had at UNCW. Not only is he incredibly nice and helpful, he is hilarious. There wasn't a class that he didn't make the class laugh. Social Theory isn't exactly easy but he genuinely wants students to understand the material so will take time to reiterate important points. SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM, HE IS AWESOME!!!
AWESOME teacher! Great sense of humor and genuine passion for his job and students! super interesting class as well!
Honestly my favorite teacher I have had at UNCW. I always looked forward to coming to this class, it's important to keep up with weekly readings, but the text book is easy to read and understand. Quizzes and tests are straight forward, mostly taken from the lecture so it's important to go to class.
Doctor Rice is amazing!! I'm not a sociology major, and don't plan on becoming one, but I would consider it just to take more of his classes. He's the funniest professor I've ever had. If you try, you'll pass. His lectures are so interesting, I've never missed one simply because I love hearing his stories and what he has to say about things.
Dr. Rice was one of my favorite teachers this semester. He is very funny and very sweet. However, if you aren't willing to go to class and read the booksassignments then you will not pass. He makes classes interesting and is always telling stories that tie into what you're learning. Tests are tricky tho-only 3 and that's your grade.
Really awesome guy and professor. Talks to DEATH about catholicism but would totally take him again.
Favorite teacher I had this semester. Funny, kind and no matter how you answer a question in class, he'll find a way to make it sound correct. Come to class and you will pass. If you are good enough with remembering the in class material, it is pretty simple to figure out the questions to the readings on the exams.
Dr. Rice and his class are the reason I'm now a sociology major. I found his lectures really interesting and very organized. If you go to class, take decent notes and study the notes before the exam then it should be no problem for you to get at least a B on all 3 tests. I'd definitely recommend him and take him again.
Professor Rice is an awesome guy who knows what he is teaching. However, his PowerPoints are not always clear and can be confusing. He asks lots of questions geared to the class, which at a 105 level, is not necessary. It just makes it awkward when no one wants to answer or cares too. Make sure to get the textbooks and read them (tests/quizzes).
He's one of the best Sociologist professors you'll ever have! There are mini quizzes throughout the course, but it's really simple and only cover basic reading questions. His tests are simple if you review. Even though it's a lecture class, it'll pass by really fast because he'll throw in jokes here and there. I would highly recommend him!
Lectures are kind of boring, but not too hard to grasp. He gives study guides for every test that prepare you really well and aren't too extensive. Every test is essay style but he's not too tough of a grader
Take him. Very easy to listen to his lectures. He keeps it interesting and funny. This was a higher SOC course so it's more challenging, I don't think I would have made it through this class with another professor. I thought I was done for when I found out he does essay test questions but he really makes sure the class understands the concepts.
I hate school with a passion. However Rice makes going to class not so bad. Even on days i dread walking into class by the end of it I walk out with a different attitude. His test are all essays, which at first i thought i was screwed. But he gives you a study guide and reviews before test to make sure you understand. YOU DA MAN RICE!
Sociology is heavy and boring but Dr. Rice did a fantastic job making it understandable. He is funny, cynical, and real with his students. I enjoyed going to class. Which is good, because if you don't go to class there is no way you'll pass. He expounds upon his slides so much and that is what goes on the tests. Not a bad intro class!
Dr. Rice is one of my favorite professors. He's so funny and interesting to listen to. The information is a lot but he makes it easy to go to class because his stories fit perfectly in his lectures. I would definitely take a class of his again but unfortunately I'm not majoring in sociology.
I absolutely loved this professor. His tangents are a bit off topic but he always covers material you are tested on. He has a great personality and makes sociology so much fun. His exams are not difficult as long as you thoroughly study the theories. He also made the final exam optional!
Absolutely love Dr. Rice! I'm taking two more of his classes next semester as well. In his education class there are three tests and three papers. So far I've made a 100 on both his papers and a 100 and a 95 on his tests. He does take attendance but his lectures are great! He really engages the class and cares about his students.
Mr. Rice has to be one of my all-time favorite professors! Already signed up for another one of his classes. He truly cares about his students and about education.
This class was really hard for me and I am a A student. Yes this class is an easy A but the work load starts adding on once the semester starts going. I ended up getting a C in this college. You have to work for the grade. BEWARE!!!!
Hated this class! All I have to say!
Theres no homework besides reading the textbook(s). He has a custom textbook that he bundles with the regular course textbook, therefore you have to buy both new, in a bundle, when I could have gotten the regular textbook for cheaper. Has three tests, and a few quizzes. The multiple choice questions are not hard, but essay portions are tough.
Professor Rice is by far my favorite college professor that I have ever had. While the material can certainly be dry, he teaches it in a way that really keeps you interested and thinking about the bigger picture. He does go off on tangents, but they usually center around the topic in class and help you to better understand. 100% recommendation.
Dr. Rice is a great professor. This class is relatively easy, but he makes it very interesting. He gives out reading quizzes, but I just skimmed the books and did just fine. His exams are not very difficult, but going to class allows the information to soak in better. He takes attendance pretty regularly so I recommend going to class.
Rice is a great prof. He's not a harsh grader and he notes if you are putting in effort and participating. I wasn't a huge fan of the content of this class because I'm in criminal justice rather than sociology. However, Rice makes it interesting. Also his wife and him are marriage goals.
There are three tests (including the final) and five quizzes. He takes attendance, so if you mess a lot it will affect your grade. Rice is a funny guy and relates the material to everyday life. The lectures are engaging. Take him while you can... he is retiring soon!
Pretty solid choice. He tells a lot of stories but it makes the time go by faster
Dr. Rice is very interactive. Though hes a year away from retiring he still seems to give his best in all lecture classes. He is very experienced and knows so much about sociology, very educated man. If youre looking for an easy class this is one of them. Though he requires an essay on the exams, just study and youll be fine.
There are 2 exams and the final. All of them are pretty difficult even if you study and read, so you really have to work for it. He is super funny and always incorporates his own experiences which makes the class interesting. If you want an easy A, however, do NOT take him.
Dr. Rice talks WAY too much about his personal life and often blabs about himself for the whole class while the actually information we need to know isn't important. The class is mainly definition based and the tests aren't bad if you read and study the notes from class. The class is boring and he talks too much about himself.
Dr. Rice is amazing! He does talk about himself a lot, but it is all related to the material and allows for better understandings. This is an easy A class IF you study the study guide he provides. I never took notes and as long as I memorized the definitions, I still did very well. He is by far the best Sociology professor available.
Dr. Rice is retiring soon so you better take him while you have a chance! The tests are multiple choice with an essay but those are the only grades besides the quizzes on the book. I wish he entered in my grade on BB so I could see where I stand. That is the only frustrating thing. He tells stories to make the time go by faster! Take him!
Dr. Rice is such a cool professor! He has been really understanding about the hurricane and is willing to help all of his students. A lot of the tests are about the readings and he really focuses on definitions, but they are multiple choice. His lectures are good and he's really funny! He is retiring soon, so if you get the chance take his class!
He's a cool guy but not many grades besides quizzes and exams. The exams are hard so make sure you do the readings and study very well.
Professor Rice is a very good socio professor. Being in his last full year (retirement), time is running out for those who would like to take him. Great intro class and his lectures are amazing. He often incorporates personal stories to give a better understanding about things you are learning in the class. A lot of reading in this class.
I loved taking this class. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and making sure you understand it. I wish every professor was like him. This was his last semester before he retires, and I know it was hard on him, but he still went out of his way to help us out. Im actually really sad I didnt get to go to his lecture for longer.
So sad to see Dr. Rice retire!! He is funny, relatable, and really made sociology enjoyable. I loved attending his class in-person. When we switched online (COVID-19), he was very accommodating and understood the struggle students were going to go through.
