My favorite teacher of all time! All papers rewritten for grade after he critiques them. Really gives students the chance to use what they've learned. Very accessible, very tuned in to students--he really wants you to do well. Bonus: great sense of humor!

This Guy is awesome, knows his stuff, and makes you want to do his assignments. Great teacher.

500-1500 word essays due ever other week. He is very hard to please, but is always respectful and helpful in giving suggestions. My writing ability went up because his expectations were so high. I would recommend him to a non-slacker with an interest to improve.

This was American Lit before 1900...every class discussion was an interesting one. It's a good class for those who like to read. Dr. John Rietz is an amazing teacher. Very recommended for serious students. Don't wanna waste his time :)

Mr. Rietz is a nice guy. But he is a hard grader. No matter how hard you try on your essays, you won't get better than C. He gave us stupid essay topics to write about. I definitly don't recommend him. Pick someone else.

Absolutely the best English teacher I have had in my entire 18 year school career. Easy grader. Always willing to help you. Very nice. Never had an English teacher like him.

He is a respectful teacher, but he grades in a hard way. He does not ease it for you.

I also took him for eng 132 and eng 235 if that says anything. Very fair teacher. You turn in papers and he makes helpful comments and suggestions, then he gives you a few days to make the appropriate changes and THEN grades them. Great sense of humor. Very intelligent. Knows his stuff. Can be a little boring at times.

this was the most class that i really worked hard to get at least a C,, but becoz of Mr. Riets harsh grading system, i have to repeat his class eng 132 becoz i had C- and it is the only class that i can't transfer to madonna university.. i'll repeat it but with another professor.

He is a great instructor. Very helpful. Always responds to e-mails. He is not easy though. You must stay on top of the assignments! Other than that he is an overall great instructor.

Rietz is an excellent instructor. The class can be difficult and there are no breaks, but that is a good thing. If you stay up on the work you should do very well. He is laid back and makes the lectures interesting. Studied short stories and two screen plays (movies). I would recommend him to anyone.

I took him for English 131 and am going to take him for English 132. He is very boring, and his grading is all over the place. One kid asked him why he got the grade he did and reitz replied-i must not have been paying attention, i was watching tv. very simple tho if you follow his rules. also, get a lot of other h/w done in class

He is a really nice guy but not the best teacher i have had. The class was boring but i got a lot of other things done in the process. His grading is kind of random but he gives you the chance to redo the papers with his guidance.

Wow-I have never worked so hard to get an A!The class isn't too hard-just not an easy A.Great teacher-u will learn a lot from him.Reminds me of Jack Johnson in a way-he's very laid back, & very funny too - but very subtle about it.I really enjoyed his class.I would highly recomend him to anyone.

I didnt really like his way of teaching. I hated how I couldnt get any higher than a B on my papers. I just didnt feel like I learned much about writing, the papers we did were just about things he wanted us to write, especially when we had to redo papers. Just do exactly what he says. I decided to take someone else for 132 and I got an A in that.

A challenging and inspiring professor. Class discussions were a highlight for me. Pay attention to his critiques on written assignments--they will make you a better writer and student. Great sense of humor and passion.

John is not an easy teacher but a good one. I had to work REALLY hard but also really learned a lot. Note what he writes on your papers and put in some time and you can get an A and come out a better writer.

Dr. Rietz is a wonderful teacher. He requires that the students think, and participate in class discussions. His option to turn papers in for notes will improve your ability to write at a collegiate level. If you plan on transferring out of Henry Ford he will prepare you for what is ahead.

AWESOME teacher. Tough grader on papers but DUH it is english. Read what he tells you to bc you will be quized. Not hard quizes, just to make sure you read. He is super laid back and very nice. His humor is great! He is understanding and helpful. Definatly knows what he is doing. I wish I took him for 131. Such a sweetheart

Difficult teacher, he makes you really think about the many papers you will write in his class. Spends most of the class time going over what good topics are to write about on all of the papers, and gives you a chance to turn in early to revise b4 the due date. As long as you refrence the grammar booklet he makes you get, you'll be fine.

He is cool take him and you will enjoy going to class but the class is hard but you should expect college to be hard fools!!!!!!

You will write 6papers, 2 of which are in class, and have short in class quizzes(which are the easiest part of the course). It is difficult to get an A, but is possible if effort is put into every paper. He is an excellent professor, and by the end of the course you will leave a lot more knowledgeable and an even better writer. rdy 4 the challenge?

Basically, you read and he gives you a quiz. I would suggest taking his American lit class if that is what you really enjoy. But, you really have to pay attention to the reading. He is really nice and if you need help he will give it. This is the second time I've taken one of his classes.

Dr. Rietz's class is no walk in the park, but he seems passionate about what he teaches and really cares about helping his students. He is consistent with his office hours and comes to class prepared. His class is mostly lecture based, but he is very engaging and looks to create open discussion in the classroom.

Excellent professor! Lectures are always interesting and discussion is greatly encouraged. Always available via email and is willing to answer questions in class as well. Great feedback on rough drafts makes it easy to get an A on the final draft. Very polite and never shows frustration with students! If I could take more classes with him, I would!

Funny guy, doesnt really give A's on his papers..

I really enjoyed his class. He gives excellent feedback on papers. Also his class is quite interesting. I can truly say that I am learning a lot! He is very good at explaining the material you are required to read. On papers, he grades the first draft then gives you a week to fix it. I really like his personality. I plan to take him again next sem!

Mr. Rietz is a great English professor. He is funny, and interesting, but in my opinion he grades slightly too hard.

Professor Rietz is a great educator; he is one of the most optimistic and inspired professors I've had the pleasure of learning from. He does grade hard, but he allows editing your papers for a higher grade. He is very anal about sentence structure, but in the end, you'll only benefit from his help. Jordan

I absolutely loved Mr. Rietz! He's a great person, very intelligent, cares for his students, and makes the class as painless as possible. He grades a little tough, but he gives you feedback and time to revise so that you can fix up your papers before you turn them in. He is one of the nicest teachers I've had and I would definitely take him again.

You can tell Dr. Rietz really enjoys his job and enjoys seeing students succeed. He is a tough grader, but he revises your work before turning in the final draft. If you put in the work you will do fine.

For anyone who says he grades hard is just lazy. He gives you two chances on all of your papers and is there to help whenever. He challenges you and truly makes you learn the material in full. He is goofy, optimistic, and caring towards his students and I plan on taking him again any chance I get.

A very lecture and reading heavy class, lectures can be quite boring sometimes. He is a very nice professor and is enthusiastic about the class, but is a tough grader for papers and uses participation points based on class discussion for a chunk of your grade.

Prof Rietz is one of the most caring professors I had this semester at HFC. He gives second chances to edit your essays, extra credit chances on the quizzez, and is very considerate of his students. Just focus and read well and you'll easily pass. Everyone that gave him a bad rating most likely didn't put in the work.

My friend and I took this class together and we nicknamed him "god rietz." His class is really enjoyable if you pay attention and participate. He assigned 7 essays throughout the whole semester and that was pretty much our grade. He really does want you to pass and will do everything he can to help you. I really recommend taking him.

He is very understanding and overall a great professor. Lets you submit your essays a week early before they are due so he can correct them and give them back to you for you to fix. There are essays every 2 weeks but they are not bad, 500-1,500 word essays. Very easy to take notes while he is lecturing.

People are being wayyy too dramatic, hes not a bad professor at all. You have 2 weeks to do the essays and while there is a test every week its literally open book. I once was confused about what to write and we emailed each other back and forth til i was confident, he's caring and smart. Just communicate. Easy final.
