I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Upper division Latin is a difficult subject no matter what, and he kept it interesting and fresh. There may have been other students who felt differently, but by the time anyone else takes his class those student's criticisms will have been addressed. "everyone...repeat after me...conjunctive relative..."
Rundin is kind of goofy but that just adds to the quality of his class. There are plenty of easier languages out there than Latin, but he goes out of his way to help you with any problems or concerns you might have. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Rundin is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He's happy to answer any questions & clarify concepts. More than that, he's funny & welcoming. He cares about his students & will help with any problems they may have. By the way--he's hot--for a classics instructor...but still hot is hot. I mean that in the most heterosexual way possible.
He's a great teacher! He is very enthusiastic and it's obvious he loves the topic his teachers. He always tries to help his students and make sure we really understand everything. It might be tedious to always repeat after him but it works! Awesome teacher!!
Extremely helpful! He goes over everything at least 3 times, to make sure that everyone understands the basic concepts behind Greek myth. He's funny and is very enthusiastic every single lecture.
He is prolly only teach classics during the spring, but he is an excellent teacher. Very Easy, Very Enthusatic, Very Helpful. Tests are easy if you go thru the lectures and re-read them. Dont really have to read the books AT ALL..he goes over them in lecture. He gives Make-Up Exams! which anyone could take if they have a stressful week of midterms
Great and interesting guy!
Dr. Rundin is an extremely friendly and funny character. Chanting is dull, but it does help out at times to remember some principle parts. He's nice and really makes the class more fun with his enthusiasm and is great at teaching. The kind of teacher you'd miss when you're done with his classes.
It's Latin. There is a lot of grammar. Deal with it or don't take class. Aside from that, he is very helpful & makes everything clear. He's eccentric but fits the class. Grading is fair & you know exactly what to expect. Fits his subject very well & I have no complaints. Work is mosty translation. Memorizing needed some. Attendance mostly expected
Hilarious professor; loves his subject and conveys this love to the class. The best professor that I have ever had. Wonderfully brings Latin, a dead language, to life for the class. Grammar and memorization is hard, but you learn quickly.
As said below, the grammar and memorizing can be a challenge. However, Rundin does a good job. Some of the reading can be tiring, but that's just part of the class. No complaints about instruction.
This professor is great! of course there's a lot of memorization in his class but he's straight-forward with you from the start. So put in the time, you'll see results. His class is pretty much very structured, so it's really easy to follow along. Just do the translations & hw before class & you're all set. He really believes in his students. =)
Professor Rundin is cool and friendly. But seriously there has got to be a better way to teach Latin.
Rudin is a little kooky, sure, but extremely intelligent and incredibly kind. I've learned a lot and don't dread his class. He's funny and always willing to help you out however he can. A great guy.
OMG! If you need to fill some extra units or have a hint of interest in latin, this is the professor to have. Latin couldn't be any better. Alot of material is covered but if you don't slack off too much you'll be fine. And yes, there is going to be the temptation of not reading the assigned plays but reading them will help you in the quizzes
I find it difficult not to love this man. He is so nerdy and a little wacky but his enthusiasm for Latin and classics is infectious. Latin is tough, but Rundin does whatever he possibly can to help you through. He's a great person--funny and kind. You get out of the class what you put into it.
Rundin is, quite simply, the greatest. Latin has immense potential to be a horrible experience, but Rundin gets everybody through it and I came out of the year with great appreciation for the subject. Rundin loves what he does and that passion is always evident. UCD is lucky to have an educator like him--the finest sort. Dr R rules. Seriously.
John Rundin is the best, hands down. He's very enthusiastic, hilariously funny, witty, kind, extremely helpful, and genuinely cares about his students. He never tries to trick you on tests -- very straight-forward. Not only did I learn so much from his class, but I really enjoyed his lectures every day. He's just awesome!
Rundin is an amazing teacher! He is so enthusiastic about teaching Latin, and when he goes off topic his stories are very interesting. There are weekly quizzes on Friday, and although I mainly crammed for quizzes Thursday nights, I still got an A pretty easily. Just be ready for spend a lot of time memorizing vocabulary.
I think he's a great professor, he stutters quite a bit, because he's thinking so fast of what he has and has not gone over yet. He tends to repeat himself, because he will forget if he has already told you rules. The repetition is good, since it's a language class. Overall, he's a great teacher and he makes me want to learn Latin.
redundant, doesnt start with basic structure of latin, but dives right into plays/text, so its hard to understand. LOTS to memorize, and he does 'chanting' of principle parts, which isnt as helpful as he says it is. a lot of homework weekly quizzes.
Prof. Rundin cares about his students. He encourages you to learn the language and take something valuable from it, instead of simply memorizing rules and lists of grammar. As long as you come to class with these same goals in mind, latin (and this teacher) will not disappoint. Take it!
Fabulous, excited, hyper prof. Once you get used to his very rapid speaking, class is a blast. Might call on you randomly. Wish that he was in the Greek department so he'd be in more of my classes!
Professor Rundin is great. He's so energetic and communicates well with his students. A great class to take-especially if you are in the sciences. I had a lot of fun in the class.
Amazing as to be expected! Had him previously for LAT001 so as a backup class I signed up for CLA 30 with him. Fun to go to lectures and his enthusiasm is contagious. Easy easy class, and much more interesting that you'd expect for a class about word roots and origins. Highly recommend any class taught by this man!
I took this course just to fulfill the language requirement. I was delightfully surprised at how much I found myself engaged. Rundin brings real energy to the subject. He keeps class moving at a fast clip, but he maintains clarity and slows to make sure everyone understands. Yes, this class involves work but any lang. does. I loved his teaching!
PROFESSOR RUNDING IS AMAZING. He is so smart, and a really nice guy.I love how the class is aimed at learning, not just memorizing or having to crame for test.He doesnt try to trick the students, you just listen during class and you will absorb the info. His teaching style is great and the material helps you break down the world around you.
Almost all of the learning comes from the workbook, A Course on Words. Simple & easy to understand, lectures online, and a heads up of what's going to be on the quiz every week. Interesting class - I highly recommend!
Prof. Rundin is, by far, one of the best professors at UC Davis. He is so incredibly knowledgeable...he was always able to answer really in depth questions and he always knew the etymology of all the words,no matter what language. He speaks several languages and is a really nice guy. Brilliant prof.
Professor Rundin is extremely erudite when it comes to linguistics. His lectures are inspiring and interesting. Latin could have been a catastrophe, considering its highly synthetic nature, but professor Rundin simply makes it magically amazing. I would even recommend his class to someone who does not major in Classics.
I took cla30 since ppl called this class an easy A. My def. of an easy A is going to class half the time, studying occasionally and at least get A- Is this such a class? No. You have to pay attention every lecture and memorize a lot. Us bio ppl with bio and ochem don't need another class forcing us to put effort that could go in our REAL classes.
Professor Rundin is an amazing professor. He is enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable, and he makes class enjoyable. He can make even the most mundane topics interesting, and really helps his students learn. There is a fair amount of memorization, but I only worked on this class one night a week, and only missed 1 or 2 questions on each quiz
Prof. Rundin is a wonderful professor! The new addition of having to learn how to diagram sentences in the Fall Quarter 2011 class was a bit difficult, & may have slightly affected my grade. It is NOT an easy A, but it is an easy B. I suggest attending all lectures & doing all exercises. There are hundreds of morphemes & details to memorize though.
Professor Rundin is the best language teacher i've ever had. Latin is a hard language, but he makes it so lucid and easy to follow. He tells you ahead of time everything that will be on the test, and he really wants you to succeed! You will get an A if you just do the homework
Rundin is the best professor I have ever had. He's just so passionate about what he's teaching that you can't help but want to learn.
Highly enthusiastic and entertaining professor. He makes his subject easy to understand and if you put in the work you will do quite well in his class. The homework load can be heavy, but he is so helpful in his office that it is not excessive. His clothing is eccentric at times but always fun. His sense of humor makes the class time go by quickly.
Loved this class! Professor Rundin truly cares about making sure his students understand the material. He tells you exactly what to study for the quizzes so this class is extremely easy and interesting! I highly recommend taking a class with him!
Best teacher ever! He is very amusing and a great prof. Loves Latin and Classics. Highly recommend taking his classes.
made the lecture very interesting, quizzes and final exam are completely do-able (will do fine if you do the homework and study power point)
Take this class as a GE. Easy A if you do the work and go to class. Great guy, interesting, helpful, and approachable. Material is easy to learn.
Professor Rundin is a very funny professor and he tries to make his lectures interesting. This is a pretty easy GE class if you study right before the quizzes. The workload is very light other than the weekly quizzes. Take this class for an A, especially if you are going into the medical field.
Super easy A. They tell you exactly what's on the exams, so if yo udon't get an A it is your own fault or not studying. This is a great and interesting class. Rundin is an entertaining guy who is passionate about what he teaches. My only complaint is that he talks way too fast at times and mumbles so it can be quite difficult to understand/keep up.
It was surprisingingly an interesting class, he is a character and is definitely passionate about classics. He really does have a good heart and doesnt want to give anyone a bad grade.
PROFESSOR RUNDIN IS THE BEST MAN ALIVE. he makes latin enjoyable -- didn't think it was possible. definitely one of the most memorablebest professors.
Pretty entertaining and enthusiastic guy with good lectures. He can make the material seem more interesting than it really is. There's a lot of memorizing required to do well on the weekly quizzes, however, and you will really have to work for it if you want an A.
Run-in really made my quarter a lot more fun. His lectures were usually pretty funny while also containing useful information. They give you a prospectus for all of the tests so you know exactly what you need to study. Grading very fair. Rundin focuses on all of the right things in class and doesn't put a heavy emphasis on meaningless busywork.
SUPER DUPER EASY A. Pretty energetic lectures and it shows he really into his subject. Weekly multiple choice quizzes which pretty make up your grade. Attendance is mandatory due to iClicker questions
Professor Rundin's enthusiasm and knowledge in the course in absolutely, positively unparalleled. I'd honestly take all of his courses if it weren't for imminent major restrictions. Take him if you can; he is a very pragmatic professor and is enjoyable in lecture.
Clear and enthusiastic professor, but ONLY easy BA- (maybe not even easy A-). You can miss an average of 1.5 on each quiz. Asks very random questions, so if you skipped A SINGLE WORD, it can cost you an A for the quiz (or even the course). Better to take it if you don't have a lot of hard classes. Puts questions that were not on the study guides.
I had high hopes for this class! Was really bummed as the quarter went on. He was not very clear, and did not keep me entertained. I really wanted to like this class and learn word roots, but I felt that the focus of the class was overall not what I expected. Let down. I got a C+ in an easy GE class, really close to a B- but they wouldn't bump.
He is crazy enthusiastic about word roots. More so than any person should be really. All quiz materials are in the book and online powerpoints. Not too hard to study, but surprisingly not an easy A.
Easiest GE class I've taken. There are weekly quizzes but are simple as long as you re-read the lecture slides and memorize the information. The final was easy too. It's all about memorization and doing the homework assigned. A+ in the end. recommended. Professor Rundin is enthusiastic about the material. Lectures are pretty boring though.
Dr. John Rundin is possibly the most kind teacher at the University of California, Davis. If you want the help, more specifically if you need the help, it may as well be yours. If you do take his, please do the work-- or at least try-- he puts in effort beyond the call of his duty and he deserves some respect for that. 10-10 best lecturer for Latin
Lectures can be very confusing. He seems to be a bit of a scatterbrain, often coming to class late and jumping from one topic to the next during lectures. He also talks very quickly, so the material can be difficult to follow. Going in to office hours or tutoring helps clear things up a ton. Tutoring definitely saved my grade.
Quizzes every Friday, but these are very easy to study for. To get good grades in this class, study for the quizzes and you're set. He can be hilarious at times, and it's true he leaps to whatever interests him in lecture, but if you come to class every day you are more than adequately prepared for the quiz by Friday. Translating can be hard.
Overall, this was a super easy class. There was a weekly homework assignment over the weekend as well as a quiz every Friday at the end of lecture. The quizzes are worth 65% of your grade. They try to tell you what is going to be on it each week. This class requires a lot of memorization of facts and words. Clicker questions every lecture.
He tells you exactly what is going to be on the quiz every week and he drops your two lowest quiz scores (there are nine). However, the course is surprisingly not an easy A because of the sheer quantity of morphemes, vocab, and facts. Rundin is an enthusiastic and clear lecturer.
This class is not an easy A. However, if you go to class, pay attention, and review like a foreign language course, quizzes will be ok. Weekly quizzes are worth the most. Professor Rundin is very nice and genuine, and he leaves nobody in the class treated unfairly. He talks a little fast, but lectures slides are posted online.
really enthusiastic about the topic! genuinely wants you to learn. but the class overall is pretty difficult, mostly memorization of really random information. quizzes every week are cumulative and often test you on trivia in previous lectures... gets difficult really quick if you slack off even on one lecture!
I don't particularly dislike the professors at all, but if you are in a difficult major and are taking other harder classes, then do not take this class. It is an easy B or C, but you need to WORK for that A. I put in about 15 hours of studying just for this class and only put in about 3-5 for my physics course (just to compare). Prepare to work.
He is great professor who is passionate about word origins and history. He is a little weird but that's normal for the Classics department. His tests are fair and easy if you study. Overall great teacher. Easy GE for a science major.
Definitely made the class worthwhile. I learned a lot from his lectures and my vocabulary expanded. With any other professor the class may have likely been dry.
I highly recommend taking Latin with Dr. Rundin. If you have any desire to learn this ancient language, Prof. Rundin will be your best possible guide. He enlivens the subject, continually shares fascinating information and context, has a genuine personality, and doesn't give up on his students. This was the best teacher of my undergraduate career.
Rundin is a very caring entertaining guy. Goes off on tangents a bit, but always gets across what he needs to. Could be that I'm not all that great with languages, but in my opinion this class required a great amount of work (it is a 5 unit to be fair). He does his absolute best to be fair and make sure we all have the information that we need.
Every Wednesday they would cover all material expected on quiz the following Friday. Material straight out of textbook and powerpoints. Make a quizlet each week following the prospectus, memorize everything, and you will get an A without any effort. I studied 3 hours a week and got nearly 100%. He's hilarious and really bad with technology.
Professor Rundin is funny and entertaining guy! CLA 30 was a pretty easy class for me. All the material in the weekly quizzes are covered in the ppts or the book, and the instructors would give us guidelines of what to study for each quiz. I would recommend making a quizlet for each unit and start studying early if you struggle with memorization.
THIS CLASS IS NOT WORTH 3 UNITS. It is very time consuming. Quizzes every Friday that you MUST spend hours studying for (9 Quizzes65% of grade/final20%). Participation is a must. Get ready to memorize and then memorize more. The professors are really nice and the material is interesting, there's just too much to remember for every quiz.
Classics is definitely pretty time consuming for a 3 unit class, weekly memorization and boring material. That being said rundin is a super cool guy and an entertaining lecturer. 5 stars for him
The weekly quizzes are a little rough during midterms but he drops two of them which evens it out. Material covered in class gives you half the quiz and half is words from the book. He tells you what will be on each quiz and final so if you study off that you do well. However if you can't memorize easily this could be rough for you.
Dr. Rundin is truly a kind and hardworking guy. The subject is often boring, but he spiced up the lecture with funny stories, videos, and pictures. Talks quickly. He is very willing to help and wants his students to succeed.
I found Professor Rundin's slight stutter to be bothersome at first, but I got used to it. His lectures were very involved and interesting and he stopped to answer any questions. The class was simple: quiz every Friday and a final that was basically like week 10 plus some random questions from throughout the quarter. Easy A, highly recommend.
Such a wonderful human! He would always put a smile on my face. Very passionate about the course. EASY A if you pay attention in lecture and complete the workbook exercises. 1-3 questions on the weekly quizzes can be tricky, which usually leaves students around an A-/B+ in a class they thought they could skate through. Don't forget to study!
Professor Rundin is nice and hilarious! CLA30 with him and Prof Albu was fun and relatively easy. Though the material isn't exactly hard, it's not necessarily an easy A since the quizzes may be hard to ace if you don't study throughout the week. There are no midterms, just weekly quizzes and online homework. I would say this class is an easy B.
He's amazing and he makes the subject he's reaching so much fun! This class is a MUST take with Professor Rundin.
Easy A class if you are willing to learn. My daily commitment is 1 hr outside the class and I got an A+. Grammar and Vocabulary are repeated and repeated in lecture so it is not hard to remember. Weekly quiz and tests are really easy. Professor Rundin is really caring and respected. Also, there is extra credit for going to tutoring hours. Take him
Lots of material covered in his classes, must stay on top of his work in order to succeed. Quiz every Friday, quizzes aren't too hard if you study.
Genuinely nice teacher. Very knowledgeable. Quizzes every friday though that you prob won't do too well on if you don't study beforehand. His lectures are "mandatory" due to him using TopHat, but I usually just did them from my dorm. Just make sure you make your quizlets every week and you'll be good to go. Easy A, but a lot of effort for it!!
Super easy class if willing to put in some effort. There is a quiz every Friday and the final is cumulative and is the same format as quizzes but more questions. Super easy homework. Very knowledgeable professor and really nice. Lectures are "mandatory" because we used tophat for attendance. Flashcards are your friends for this class and save them!
Hilarious man and super nice guy. Loved this class, the stuff we learned was actually interesting and I enjoyed coming to class. Make sure to come to class for TopHat participation points and study for the weekly quizzes! They're super easy and fair, you just need to stay on top of things.
Super funny, a great professor for a really interesting class. Goes over a lot of fields of science terminology so you become a bit more well rounded. Highly recommend this class for any science majors, specifically biology.
You can study the day before the quizzes and still get an A. Professor Rundin is an extremely caring guy and pretty funny too! I recommend taking his class, he definitely makes it worthwhile.
John is a really funny professor and very obviously passionate about his topics of interest, although he assumes everyone else should know just as much as he does. Overall, the course was interesting but there were to many writing assignments and required readings which got extremely tedious at times.
Dr. Rundin is a phenomenal lecturer. He's very easy to talk to and really cares about your understanding of the subject content. I definitely recommend taking this course. Just keep in mind that its a language course so it is going to inevitably move fast.
Personality-wise he is very funny and nice, however, he goes on numerous unrelated tangents, not a clear lecturer, etc. I pretty much taught Latin myself through the textbook. This program called eyeVocab is terrible and doesn't teach you vocab and instead makes you try to associate words with random pictures.
Rundin is a great professor. You can tell he's passionate about his job and really cares for the students. Quizzes every Fridays and he tells you what to focus on. Quizlet helps and we have a cumulative final so make sure you save your quizlets or notes from Unit 1 like I did. Must show up to class to redeem Iclicker points. Recommend taking!
Really funny and passionate professor, sometimes he goes off on tangents and keeps talking. The slides for the next month are already posted which help a lot. The weekly quizzes are pretty easy, and there are clicker questions each class.
Hilarious guy, highly recommend for CLA30! Weekly quizzes were easy given you studied what was on the guide. I stopped using the textbook halfway through the class and there was no difference, so don't bother getting it if you're good at memorizing or have a really good vocabulary.
He's a good professor. Weekly quizzes and clicker questions and homework were there. There is a lot of memorization. Now getting an A is not that difficult but not easy but getting a B is very doable. Just get a group of friends and make flashcards before quizzes and you'll guarantee an easy B or A.
A great lecturer that is sure to keep you engaged in class. He is very passionate about what he teaches and wants all his students to do well, while working for it! He has explicit guidelines of what you should do to get an A, and as long as you go to class and study the textbook/workbook chapters he assigns, an A is absolutely attainable.
He is a wonderful instructor who is truly passionate about what he teaches. He has such a positive attitude, making him very approachable and easy to talk to. I really enjoyed his lectures and learned so many things that are relevant to my biology major. Stay on top of the assigned homework and look over your notes. He is very fair on his quizzes.
Professor Rundin is the best professor I've had so far at UCD. He cares about his students and is hilarious. This class is test heavy meaning you will have a quiz every Tuesday which has 3-4 curve balls but if you study from the quiz prospectives you will receive an A!
Rundin is such a nice and respected professor, he always cracks jokes and explains straight to the point. He is very nice if you approach him for help, and he's super passionate about teaching Greek and Roman information. the quizzes every week are generally easy, but they always put 3-5 curve-balls on them, so you must study to get an A.
He is by far the best professor I've ever had. He's so kind, helpful, and accommodating during these tough times. He explains everything very well, and makes sure nobody gets left behind. 10/10 I would take him again.
He is the most caring professor Ive ever met and his lectures were not boring at all. I took it during the summer and we had 2 worksheets/week, an open book quiz/week, and a final. Overall, a pretty easy A and paying close attention during lectures help alot!
Professor Rundin is by far my favorite professor I've ever taken. He is kind, understanding, and available when you need help. The assignments themselves are not too hard but they are still content rich and you will always be learning. He has truly made it a class of learning without sacrificing enjoyment and engagement.
This guy is the best and caring prof I've ever had. He really appreciates feedback and is super accommodating. I honestly ask questions a lot because his entire face lights up when he talks about Latin its so wholesome. As for the class, its a bit fast pace but the video lectures are detailed and the hws solidify the content. Take him!!
His class was asynchronous and he uploaded videos every week. However, he did upload some over the weekend, which was a bit annoying, but he extended the deadline for those HWs. Everything was open-note, and you could also collaborate with other people. He also held contests and you could win things like a dictionary, which I thought was nice
The professor really cares about his students, and his class was great! He has an amazing grasp of language and often relates class material to other patterns across the several languages he studied. Overall very interesting!
Easiest class I've ever taken. Some homework but all very easy, and the quizzes and final were extrememly easy as long as you do the HW and are familiar with the content. I also personally found the topics interesting. Overall a good and easy GE.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR!! Definitely one of my favorites at UC Davis. So glad I was able to have him as a professor! 100% recommend! Quizzes (30%), homework (60%), final (10%). Quizzes and final are open note. Homework is very easy. If you're looking for an easy GE, take CLA 30!
He made the class boring, I dreaded hearing him in lectures. He goes on tangents not related to the lecture topic. He made homework assignments unnecessarily long. Not accommodating, kinda does not care
- Interesting, engaging lecturer - Homework can be corrected TWICE - Every test is open note/textbook/internet - Rundin accommodated me with deadlines to the ends of the Earth - I now know how to read Latin - He literally threw a class party for us with cake and appetizers (we just had to translate what was written on the cake) This guy is a gem!!
Oh my god, I don't understand why he has good ratings. He is so mean in class, making fun of students for getting things wrong! You don't *just* get something wrong in this class he will make it a personal attack on a student. Assigns like 16 homeworks a week. So out of touch that he expects all students to be putting this class first.
He assigns so much homework. The homework is not just from the book. He makes his own homework too. There are also weekly quizzes that are very hard. They are NOT OPEN NOTE anymore. Each quiz is so hard and quizzes are 30% of our grade. He is making this GE way harder than it needs to be.
I took this class as an "easy" GE, but Professor Rundin has in-person quizzes every week that require a lot of studying and memorization. Don't take if you want to get away with little studying.
ridiculous amount of homework. weekly quizzes switched to mandatory in class and closed note midway through for no reason. not enough time for quizzes, extreme amount of effort on his part just for attendance. probably for his ego or something. acts like a nice guy but things have just gotten stricter and stricter since class started. ridiculous.
HE HAS CHANGED THE FORMAT OF HIS CLASS. No longer all open note making it much more difficult and stressful. Weekly quizzes are 25 Questions & 30% of grade (class averages on these range from C to B-). To do well on these quizzes it takes a lot of memorization. 20% final. 10% attendance. 40% HW (easy). Do not sign up if you just want an easy A!
Professor is very obnoxious and disrespectful. Class requires so much memorization. He changed the class format randomly from open note/take at home to closed note in person weekly quizzes. He assigns extreme amount of HW. Definitely the worst professor i've had at Davis. Don't take this class unless you want to suffer for a 3 unit GE.
He's really funny & nice. Expect 1-2 hours of hw each week though. Do the workbook and study the hw and u should be getting B-As on quizzes. ppl are straight hating on him b/c there's so much content to memorize in a word root class. tho i do wish quizzes were still open book, expect to put in some effort for this 3 unit classes.
terrible course
Class is interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed the material. The amount of work is very reasonable, don't mind that the quizzes are in class. It's nice to get back to the norm after COVID and appreciate the time he puts into his lectures and helping us actually learn the material. Saddens me to see negative reviews b/c he is an excellent professor.
Loved this professor, he is clear and concise, very caring and understandable, I feel like I actually learned in his class. Latin classes are very interactive as like all other language classes so you get called on in class, but he goes easy on everyone.
I just want to say that he is a super bad professor, who changed the format of the final exam after the PNP was over from an online exam to a written exam and forced attendance. tophat is really a bad thing and if you want to take an easy 3 units GE class, he is the absolute worst choice and I hope I never take his class in my life.
I liked him at first but then he changed the whole format of the class. Homework weightage dropped from 60 to 40 percent, and he increased the weightage of the final. I did well in the class, others...not so much. I hated this change because it is so disorganized and unfair to change a course format in the middle of a quarter. Thankfully managed...
I think he is a nice person but not a great professor. He changed the format of the class in the middle of the quarter, which is ridiculous. Homeworks are ok, but weekly in-person quizzes were painful. Lots of memorization. Lectures are mandatory. The overall workload of the class is insane for a 3-unit GE class. Avoid.
It was ridiculous. He changed the syllabus so temporarily that many people didn't have time to choose PNP
He changed the class policy a few times in the middle of the quarter and he started being strict about cheating on weekly quizzes. The workload was a lot for it being a 3 unit GE. You have to pay attention in lecture and memorization is necessary. But if you write good notes and get good seats during quizzes, it's not too bad. Not an easy A, tho.
Class used to have online + open note weekly quizzes and final exam but as of Winter Quarter 2023, the quizzes and final exam were in person and closed note. Quiz questions were pretty unreasonable, requiring you to recall extremely specific little details from his powerpoints. LOTS of memorization. NOT worth the 3 credits at all.
NOT worth the 3 units. Prof was extremely nice but the amount of memorization expected was insane. Changed to only in-person tests weeks into the quarter, after you couldn't drop the class. Doing well on the final meant getting lucky on which things you memorized, I don't know anyone who did well. Only managed an A- bc of hw & participation.
Honestly, avoid this class. You may be thinking, wow easy GE, no, not with this professor. You are expected to memorize all of the Latin and Greek suffixes and prefixes, as well as really useless historical information. Weekly quizzes, huge homework loads, overall a really stupid class, that takes up a lot of time despite being 3 units.
I always look forward to going to his class. He's very engaging and jovial. It takes a few days to get used to his teaching style as he tends to go off on tangents, but his repetition of material helps me to better understand it. He's also incredibly lenient. If you need anything, he will accommodate. He's retiring soon, so take his class!
He's a really great language teacher, if it's hard for you to memorize then I wouldn't recommend it for you, but if you are good at that then it's and easy A. He's a really nice teacher, considerate and understanding of one's situation. Homework but it's just 8-20 minute videos with a quiz at the end. Quiz every Friday heavier than final.
I shall not let John Rundin be slandered by RMP reviews! This gem of a man, even if he is as fallible as a professor as previous reviews may indicate, makes the pain and bore that is Latin interesting. He brings life, enthusiasm, and interesting commentary to a dead, boring language. Praise be to John Rundin! He's a real one. Go to class, do work.
He really knows his stuff and loves to teach it. Makes lots of jokes and is very easy to talk to. Lots of quizzes. Easily one of the most enthusiastic professors I've ever had. My only issue, and why I put a 4 instead of a 5, is because of some lack of professionalism. He makes a lot of self-deprecating comments that are sometimes uncomfortable.
Rundin is a nice guy and has engaging lectures, but his class is not the "easy GE" that people claim CLA 30 is. He makes sure that to get an A you have to learn the material. Yes... you will have to memorize a lot word roots in a class called Greek & Latin word roots. Class is Average difficulty, and quite applicable to everyday life esp if in STEM
Rundin's CLA030 is no easy GE. Expect heavy memorization and changing policies. However, attending lectures, using Unstuck study, and diligent studying can help manage the workload. Overall, a challenging but applicable course.
great prof and great man! definitely easy A if ur willing to put efforts.
This course is not an easy A GE, but it is an easy B. The homework should be pretty easy and quick to complete as long as you use your internet resources. I was just studying around an hour for each of the weekly quizzes, which was enough to do decent on them. You will need to study more if you want an A. The final is similar to the quizzes.
There was a reason why he had a 400 person lecture hall and only 1/4 of it was full. He is not a very good lecturer, reads right off of the slides, and teaches a lot of irrelevant things to the course itself. He is not very understanding with non-native English speakers. This is an easy class, take it, but not with him, quiz every week, lots of hw
Rundin speaks very fast and tends to interrupt himself so his lecturing is kind of all over the place but his slides were very clear and he is very understanding of circumstances and what not. There's a quiz once a week but its easy points if you study a little bit and it makes the final a breeze. A little time consuming for a 3 unit course though.
Literally one of the best professors I have ever met. He is very passionate about his teaching and genuinely cares about his students. I'm so sad he's retiring but if you were able to take him you are so lucky.
Loves to talk and engage students in class, very lecture heavy and content is dependent on rote memorization.
