Dr. Rush is an awesome instructor! His passion for his subject and interest in his students can't be matched anywhere. The course consists of a midterm and a final, but they're fairly easy. Take the Lab with Rush in the summer session! He's great!
Dr. Rush has a great class! All of the topics are extremely interesting. The class mostly consists of movies, cartoons, and video clips. No homework and there is only a mid-term and a final. Both of which are take home and have multiple choice -T/F.
yippy! hes easy, but still gets some knowledge in your brain. cool guy, always willing to help.
doc rush is one of the best teachers i have ever had.his lectures are easy to follow, and as long as you take notes all of his tests are a breeze. i took all of my anthro classes with him and i recieved an A in all of them.
Lectures are somewhat disorganized, and not very engaging. And Dr. Rush is in love with himself. He spent much of class promoting his new book.
I took two class from him and did well. One thing...if it sounds like its just some story he threw in, IT'S NOT! It will be on the test. Write EVERYTHING DOWN!
Really Easy, ask him to see his tattoos
If you want an easy course, this is it! If you want a GOOD course and want to actually learn something, stay away. Rarely talks about important subject matter, very unclear, very disorganized, self-absorbed, and very disapointing.
Does talk about himself some, but is a very intelligent individual. The material is very engaging for those who want to pay attention, take notes, and learn about anthropology. He tries to get you leave with a lasting impression of the material.
very nice but doesn't teach much. if you want an A take this course, but if you want to learn go somewhere else. i guess you will learn about his book signing dates though... kinda plugs too much.
easy class. was supposed to be 3 hrs once a wk, lasted only about an hour and a half at most. just do the weekly assignments, doens't matter if the answers are right. make sure you show up though b/c you can't make up quizes.
Rush is very stuck on himself and his beliefs are questionable. I respect the views of others but question his capacity for intelectual growth. He promotes his book numerous times per class. And should give warning about his refferance to a web site to view a book of the dead. It's a tatoo that covers his entire butt. not always appropriate.
Not a difficult class AT ALL! TONS of notetaking needed for the tests! Only 2 test - both take home and he encouraged collaborating with others. One opportunity for extra credit, which consisted of "what you've learned from the movies." Dr. Rush is a different teacher, but I liked that - very relaxed and easy to approach. I would recommend him!
Dr. Rush is very knowledgeable, but he promotes his book constantly. You need to attend his classes because you need the notes for the take home test, there are only 2 which he encourages collaborating on. I did not read any books, as there was no HW. I thought this was a very interesting class, I recommend it.
Teacher has been tattooed by wild bill on multiple occasions. Loves to talk about tattooes and is really easy going.
Very cool teacher- I like his view on a lot of things... I also think his tattoos are pretty awesome.
Great teacher. I plan on taking Anthro 9 with him if I can. 1/1L is a great class for the summer. Highly recommend him!
He's very self involved, the Anth 9 class he teaches is all about Hindu, Islam, and Egypt cultures. NOT what it's advertized. Test's are EASY because you can work on them in groups and share answers but are about 100 questions long reguarding his books and his opinions not always "facts" but rather the world according to Rusch.
Great instructor....made me want to change my major.
*W*O*W*! This teacher really changed my life and a lot of my views. He made me insanely interested on the subject, and kept my attention from the first day to the very last minute of the semester. TAKE THIS TEACHER. He will INFLUENCE and INSPIRE YOU. =) WONDERFUL instructor. Thanks for everything Mr. Rush!! You are great!!!
ALL HE DOES IS LECTURE. YOUR GRADE IS BASED ON TWO EXAMS AND YOU HAVE TO READ ALL OF THE TEXTS ASSIGNED AND TAKE WORD FOR WORD NOTES FROM LECTUREN ORDER TO GET A GOOD GRADE.
Great teacher, VERY helpful always willing to answer any questions you have... I took his summer lab class.. GREAT class.. Any antro class you need take with DR.Rush. Ask questions and speak up don't be the quiet one in the class and he'll love you!!
Doctor Rush is the epitome of the ideal Anthropology professor! He's very knowledgeable and his interest in the subject is second to none. Be sure to attend class, especially on the days he reviews for tests and quizzes.
One of my best classes last term. Easy, interesting and as long as you try not to listen to too much of his bias, is really informative. Loved going to that class every day, however, it was in the morning, and he turns the lights off, so if your tired, buy yourself a coffee before class. ^_^
Totally awesome class. Teacher was cool and i stayed interested almost everyday. He is a little wierd about relating EVERYTHING to drugs, but hey thats his theory i guess. you dont really need the books through class but you need them for the tests. You are only graded one your midterm and final, but they are take home.I am taking Rush again!
Dr. Rush wants his students to excel and succeed. The lab class is excellent to take during the summer. It's not too strenuous, and he prepares you thoroughly as to what to expect on the mid-term and final. Good luck on your studies.
Dr. Rush is a killer teacher, very knowledgable, experienced in a lot of aspects of life other than anthro, easy as long as you go to class and lab, reviews till you understand so the (lab)test are easy, (lect)test are take home, and if you're a criminal justice major he'll prepare you for forensics class!
Dr. Rush knows anthro and I learned alot about it from him. My only complaint would be that he makes a lot of political statements about various topics that are not related to anthro. some I am not of which I am not sure he could support if asked.
This is the hardest class that I have ever taken. Rush tells us to read B4 class and go into small groups and answer ques in book. He doesnt lecture and has a midterm/final and we have to know ALL of the BONES/Met. Pts and side of the body. He doesn't teach them AND the book only shows the LEFT SIDE bones. HE really needs to teach for his tests
I love Prof. Rush. He is great! He is very smart and knows the subject. He is a great teacher and is always willing to help you if you have a question. I love the way he looks at things. Ive taken three classes with him! Anthro 1/ 1L and anthro 9.
Kind of crazy. actually really crazy. i took the tv course and do not recommend it. the tests are really hard and you have to look through two books to get the answer. the tests dont really focus on his lecture but you can work on it in groups so dont take the class unless you got some buddies in the class too
This teacher was one of the worst I have every seen. So egotisitcal that the required reading was his own book. Very stuck up individual. Mean
he has the hugest ego he requires you to buy his book and cites everything to the books that he wrote during lectures. he tells the class that he cant disclose information since we should be reading his book thats coming out. i'm not religious and i was disgusted by things he says and calls facts thats are extreemly disrespectful to any christian
Rush has his PHD? There is hope for us all. Just look at his tests, full of misspelled words & on multi choice he can't even get his ABC... in order no joke. His test are very subjective, very odd for multi choice. This guys is all about the "mushroom". Best of luck to those that dare...
Class was . . . interesting. Make sure you like to hear about mushrooms and hear him talk about all of his books. Not too hard if you take notes. Test questions are VERY subjective.
He's a conspiracy theorist. You need to learn "his" definitions. His tests are all over the place. Unless you can take extensive amounts of notes (word for word) then good luck on his very difficult tests. Oh, the answer to EVERYTHING is: Jesus was a Mushroom!
Tree huggers & bible thumpers need to choose someone else! Lectures deal with fact, something you people don't like to hear. Multiple choice midterm & final for summer session were a bit tricky but they're take-home so it balanced out. Before I knew what happened, I learned a TON of information in the short 6 weeks. He was an excellent professor.
(Summer session) Days were spent working on the lab manual in groups, then reviewing the answers at the end of class. He was VERY specific on what would be on the midterm and final. He laid out selected bones on a daily basis for several days prior to midterm & final. Learn those and you'll do fine, no questions about bones that weren't laid out.
If you listen to his lectures you can pass without reading. He trys to make you buy his book, it's a waste of money/time. I received an "A" without turning a page. He loves to talk about drugs and while many don't beleive Jesue existed, he takes it to a new level as he is certin that Jesue is a Mushroom...I love it. kids just say no to drugs
Egotisical. Wants you to buy and read his books. You don't use them. Didn't hear hardly any facts. Just his thoughts said like facts. Obbessed with the mushroom and male gentitals? He repeats things ALOT! Tests were hard. He annoyed the crap out of me. Don't take this if your religious at all. Not the class I expected. Hope to never see him again.
This is the worst class I have ever taken! Each class he was all over the place, for final exam prep was told not to worry about date, day before test he said that he misspoke!!! Then change the dates 3 time...run far away from this class while you still can!!!!
I have mixed feelings about the guy. On one hand, he seems to be a nice enough guy and really has a passion for anthro. One the other hand, some of his discussion stray from anthro and into the bizarre. Odd theories, preference for polytheistic religions, drugs, etc. Overall, when he kept to the subject he was a good, if not easy, teacher.
HE IS EFFING AWSOME !!!! take this teacher if you want to learn alot. Tests are a cake walk they are take home and multiple choice ......HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Rush is a very interesting man. He did a good job with the the anthro classes I took from him. Recommended.
Very awesome teacher! You can learn a ton if you're interested and do the suggested reading. Pretty easy class overall, which is perfect for a community college. Only disagreement was that druids did NOT make human sacrifices, but what are you gonna do? :) Very interesting class, strange dude, met my fiance in the class. Reccomended!
He is a horrible teacher he keeps referencing himself and doesns stop talking about mushrooms I thought i could go into this with an open mind with what i had heard and read but it is impossible this guy is just ridiculous i thought it would be a very interesting class and was looking forward to it rush made it so i never wanted to attend class
This guy is nuts. I took his class just for fun and already have a few degrees and had never heard of the stuff he came up with and couldn't find an educated person who did. Jesus was a mushroom? Lay off the pipe, brother! If you want to learn about Jesus, take Intro to The New Testament with Jason File!
I took Dr. Rush in the summer for Antro 1 and am currently taking for Lab. Kinda odd, but very helpful and I highly suggest the summer class. Only two tests and both open book/notes and group. Lab is done mostly from the lab book but he shows you what is on the tests. Nice guy and good teacher...aside from his mushroom theories. :D
The first class he tells you to question what you are taught in school then proceeds to tell you he teaches his own opinion. I really hoped to learn more from this topic. Terribly disappointed with this class. You do not use the Spiritual Tattoo book, save your money. He wrote all the books for the class, and they are poorly written.
Not sure what to say he gives you notes (which I use a laptop to type) and lectures in class. overall not a bad professor.
Prof. Rush is awesome. Sure his mushroom theories might rub some people the wrong way as evidenced by a few of his ratings here but his knowledge is undeniable. He is heavy on lecture and light on tests which is nice also. Most importantly though, it is obvious that he cares about what he is teaching. Lecture is lively and always interesting.
The highest grade on the midterm for my class was a 74% on a take home open note, open test that we had a week to complete. The test had questions from reading and lectures that were assigned after the test. Since he teaches on his own opinion and theories you are not able to find the information from other resources so don?t miss a class.
Interesting man with Interesting theories, take this class if you want your brain to hurt! I enjoyed his books and lectures. You will not get bored. Pay attention to lectures, movies and read your assignments! His tests are hard!!!
By far the most interesting teacher I ever had. Tells you exactly what you need to know for quizzes and Lab tests. Very interesting lectures, that promote critical thinking. No papers at all. He also gave us a few chances for extra credit. Definitely the coolest teacher at Sierra. Check out his books!
What a wonderful professor! Dr. Rush is a nice person and does truly care about his students. I took his class in the summer and I did very well. He tells you what will be on the tests and quizzes. He is so knowledgeable about so many things and wants to pass it on to his students... Take him, he's cool!
Best class ever! Wonderful teacher!
He is just totally awesome, so long as you're not a deeply religious close minded Christian :p I personally LOVE his mushroom theory and his class was always so entertaining!
The most intelligent man at sierra. My favorite class
Prof. Rush is an AMAZING teacher! He is a great and funny person, super easy going and has great stories about his life. Gets easily side tracked, but there are only 2 exams and 70 out of 100 of the questions from each test are take home. I definitely recommend this teacher. I wish he would teach other subjects just so I could learn from him.
Pseudoscience 101. Rush will teach you plenty of interesting, generally fallacious, hypotheses as if they are solid facts. Unfortunately most of the students will eat this up because they don't have the experience yet to debunk his claims. Easy A, but little more than good story telling. If you truly care about this subject, Rush is a waste.
I really haven't learned much in his magic and witchcraft anthroplpogy class. He always talks about mushrooms and how God isn't real. I thought we would actually learn more about witches, but it turned out to be more of a religious class. Hard to pay attention, makes hard references that I don't understand, sloppy powerpoints. Don't take this class
Rush isnt organized, so the class topics are erratic and none of the things he says seem to relate to one another. His main point is god isnt real, religion is the product of drugs, and religion as we know it today is just politics. I agree for the most part, but I didnt pay for the class and books to listen to him rant about this twice a week.
Rush is one of the BEST teachers ever. He is extremely intelligent and has the best sense of humor. He doesn't care if you dont show up or leave early, but you miss a lot if you do, if you are interested in religion take this class! Take the notes and read his books and you will get an A. Midterm and Final 100 ?'s 70 of which you take home and do.
One word: MUSHROOMS!!! That is all he really talks about. He has good points and some of I believe but other things, it's like really? Easy but tons of note taking. If your not a good note taker, this isn't for you. Average of 5-7 pages of notes per night. I like him though. He is funny!
Rush is a great teacher and keeps lectures interesting. It is important to show up and take notes and be sure to do the reading assignments and you will surely get an A. He addresses touchy religious subjects that many may be uncomfortable with. Rush is open to other opinions and tries to be unbiased. Good teacher over all. Easy A.
Disappointed with this class because I never really learned anything throughout the entire course. He's funny, but also very opinionated, especially in regards to politics and religion. He's repetitive, and his humor gets irritating after the first week of hearing it. I didn't pay to hear him ramble. Don't take if you're serious about this field.
Rush only refers to religion and how all of history is connected to the use of mushrooms. He claims most of history is a lie but only has his self-authored books (which are the required texts) to reference. Also speaks badly about fellow professors. A waste of time, when I was actually looking forward to this class.
Cool guy, interesting class. However he is very bad at writing test questions. There are many questions on his tests that can be interpreted as right or wrong depending on how you read it. My 8 person study group often got questions wrong when we could argue the questions answer either way. VERY UNCLEAR. None the less, with hard work I got an A
Rush is a horrible teacher. All he does is lectures, his notes don't make much sense or relate to test questions. He spends most of the period talking about politics and mushrooms. I can say I haven't learned anything from this class. I would not recommend this instructor for an anthropology class unless you know how to teach yourself.
The only things you are graded on are video quizzes and the final exams. He doesn't word the quiz questions clearly, and doesn't review the main points he wants you to get out of the class for exams. Overall he is a disorganized, unprofessional teacher and i would not recommend.
Amazing instructor. He is caring and informative. He has given a lot of information that gives a different perspective on life. I like that he has opened my eyes to new ideas - but some overly religious students might be shocked:) Easy A
Thee worst teacher of my semester. His notes are disorganized, he babbles most of the period and shares his thoughts on Obamacare & gun control ALOT every class. Only points are from quizzes and the exams which he doesn't review. You have no idea what to study, so good luck if you sign up for this class. He's a cool guy but horrible instructor.
His notes are disorganized, he goes off track most of the period. Isn't clear what he wants you to be prepared for for the final. only points are from quizzes & midterm & final. Overall thee worst instructor I've had out of all of my instructors during my college experience.
Great teacher, very open minded, learned things I never knew about. He tells everyone upfront on his views and remember-Freedom of speech!
I liked John Rush. He is clearly a very intelligent man that is very opinionated, but if you do enough research yourself, you can understand his point of view, which is very interesting. His point is that all religions have at some point used altered states, often by the use of entheogens. If you engage him and ask questions, he's great! Take him.
Great Class!! Dr. Rush is very helpful and energetic. He loves what he does and the subject matter he teaches. This class is a lot of reading.
He is a typical anthropologist, who is passionate about this subject. He has different theories than other anthropologists and will explain why he believes his theory is more accurate. GO TO CLASS. Extra credit is only given based on attendance. Study those bones and Hominids and you will do just fine.
Professor Rush is very straight forward which may offend some people but just made me love him all the more. It is very rare you come across a teacher who's main objective is to tell you the truth and try to teach it to the best of their ability. I have the utmost respect for him and recommend him to anyone who isn't blinded by their religion.
John is awesome, he gives you a ton of time to prepare for the lab tests and is always willing to discuss the material and go into more detail if you're interested. Best lab teacher.
Not too much to say. Intelligent guy, clear on his expectations. Show up to class, be open minded, take notes; you'll pass easily. Didn't use any of the books he said we needed to read (have read since then however). Could find all the information for tests online. The books were a fun read though.
Professor Rush is a really knowledgable and he teaches a class that will really benefit you as a person. Homework is not really mandatory, he gives you all the answers in class and allows you to turn that in. That being said, the final was VERY TOUGH. Out of 13 classes at Sierra, this was the first one I could not get an A. So many skulls...
Great Professor, took his witchcraft class which is very interesting material to begin with. If you're easily offended or very religious this may be a difficult class for you as he doesn't shy away from sharing his opinions on some controversial topics. Do the reading take notes show up to class and you'll be golden.
Summer class. His grades consist of movie quizzes and 2 tests. Each test is 100 questions and the first 70 are take-home. There is too much terminology and I've been pretty lost since the beginning. You really have to read and study every day. He constantly injects his opinions about controversial topics and its irritating. Take a different class.
Found it really hard to keep up with him in his lectures. There didnt seem to be any structure to his power points, kept going back and forth and referencing things that no one had explained to us before. For having no pre-requisites I found this class to be incredibly difficult to keep up with and, honestly, hard to believe.
He was very nice and easy to approach, however, his lectures rarely went over the information we needed for the exams. Most of the work was self-study and if you are not prepared for a LOT of memorization then don't take this class. The homework and workload is very doable, just be prepared to be disciplined in your study time. Grades on a curve.
Professor Rush believes what he believes, and teaches what he believes. Does not teach the curriculum in class. Mostly self-study and lots of memorization. The other students are great, but most of the time, when Prof. Rush talks, I often find myself gritting my teeth.
he makes you think bout things in a different way, the lecture is always intriguing, although he expects you to know everything for the exam from studying outside of class. its difficult, but id rather it be like that than having done my homework, coming to class and recaping for 3 hours per week. its a learning experience, interesting and unique.
I was disappointed by this class. The lecture was all over the place and never had actual coherent information. The material was interesting but all over the place, and mostly just opinion based info. Dont take if easily offended lol. There was 2 tests based mostly on reading youre expected to do outside of class. I feel like I didnt learn anything
What you need to know before taking this class is that it's all about myth, religion, and magic mushrooms. I took notes for the fun of it because his lectures are interesting, but also helped me with the Mid-Term and Final exams (only tests in class). First 75 questions on mid and final are take-home with extra credit questions and rest in class.
Rush is really knowledgable and gives interesting lectures, just get ready to take continuous notes for the full class time ( I took at least 5 pages every class). The only graded assignments were worksheets for in-class videos, but they weren't worth much. The only way to pass is to do the reading and take detailed notes for the midterm and final.
If ur not ready to have libertarian views shoved in your face for 3 hours, don't take this class. Lectures bounce ALL OVER the place, never make sense. Graded on videos and 2 exams. Both exams are 70% take-home, 30% in class, so that helps a bit. He assigns A LOT of reading at home, books are as difficult to follow as lectures TAKE LOTS OF NOTES!
I really liked Professor Rush. He is interesting and teaches a wide range of subject in his Anthropology 9 class. I may not have agreed with his political views but I respect his ability to really live, think, and teach outside the box. If you are triggered by a different view of religion this may not be the class for you. A+ in my opinion.
Ive already taken Bio Anthro 1 before but I needed a higher grade cause I wasnt happy with what I got. You would think I knew what he was talking about in class. WRONG. Hes gone over NOTHING that I already knew, talked about how god didnt exist and how random mutations for a new species doesnt just randomly happen. Bad professor and bad lectur
I was genuinely interested in the mag/rit class but when I got into it, he began talking about mushrooms and how the catholic church hates him. Very confusing if you miss even one class. Nothing on canvas-get notes from peers. Very understanding, In class quizzes at the end of class on videos. midterm + final are 10% in class 70% take home
True professor for the intellectuals
I took this class a while ago and I do not have good memories. Lots of reading (he wrote the books), dry lecturing, super opinionated and if you don't agree you are wrong. He talked about mushrooms a disproportionate amount of class. The class itself was not super difficult but the midterm and final were hard, though part take home helped.
I am not sure what to say about this teacher other than the fact that you should expect ZERO communication from him. Please do not expect to learn anything. He spent a majority of this class talking about the book he's writing and his own opinions. Seriously, don't take his class.
Lots of dense reading, but if you pay attention in lectures and take notes, it's not that difficult. Not for close minded students. Though I thought he spent a bit too much time on the mushroom topic, and sometimes he can get too opinionated, but it's a very interesting class covering the superstitions, origins, and myths found in world religions.
I took this class as an elective cause I though it would be fun, but I wish I didn't. You don't learn anything important because he tries to cover EVERYTHING imaginable (and fails). One minute his lecture will be explaining the creation of the Earth, the next he's talking about making arrowheads. You can google exam answers, but won't find answers.
Worst professor. Didnt care about students, thought responds to email on time. His video instructions are awful to follow. Lecture video is not appropriate to his exams where youll literally not find answers nowhere. Search for a better professor, seriously..
