Good teacher, made lectures clear and was always the for extra help

Totally my favorite professor this semester. He is so engaging and intelligent. I never even skipped because I hated to miss him talking! He's so funny and incredibly knowledgable. I wish he taught all my classes.
Fabulous prof. Do take!
such a great prof. knows everything and anything about hist. tests easy as long as you pay attention. 7-pg paper, cake. ladies: hes hot!
Best teacher ever... study well for the tests and you'll tear 'em up. Best lectures I've ever had to take. To skip his class would be a mortal sin... it's just that great
Dr. Russ is the best history teacher I have ever had, really a pleasure to listen to. 3 essay/identify test per semester plus final. YOU MUST TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!
awesome prof...take him...most interesting speaker ive had at ud...go to class, take notes, and study for exams and youll get an easy a and learn at the same time...seriously take this class with him!!
Simply the best.
An outstanding professor. Very knowledgeable and inspirational. A model historian.
Very cool guy, love his choice of words. Tests were easy, but the most writing you'll ever do. History can be difficult to teach and not put students to sleep but he did a good job.
For a history class, it was fantastic. I registered for and then dropped a history class each of the last five semesters. This one was a keeper. He is very clear and speaks very well.
Great guy. Very clear, has a good sense of humor and keeps you awake. Stays after class and offers office hours, even though you won't need it. His notes are perfect. Only thing he expects of you, is to write on the exams what he told you in the notes. The way all teachers should be, take him.
I LOVE RUSS! he's the best lecturer in the entire world. you write a lot, yes, but the notes are all you really need for the test- take this class RUSS IS THE MAN!
Wow. He was simply amazing! DEFINITELY take Prof. Russ. I didn't do to well in High School with AP US History so I dreaded this class. I was even more nervous when the tests were all written. However, don't fret. Go to him for help, like I did. He is amazing and I actually like US History now.
AWESOME professor! He presents a lot of material and there's a lot of reading, but it's well worth it. He chooses good texts and presents material in a way that makes you want to learn it. He's a great speaker and he will undoubtedly hold your attention. Exams are long but incredibly fair.
Highly recommend this class. Essay tests but very fair grader. Research paper near the end of the semester but you get toal freedom in topic. Loved the class. Funny class and tries to make boring topics interesting.
AMAZING and intense, the man loves history and you will too by the end of the class!!
Class is kind of interesting if you like history...i was always bored in class, but Russ is a very good teacher....exams are not hard as long as you review all the information provided...definitely an easy A class
Appreciated vaious backgrounds of students, obviously interested in students' success, however, one must work to obtain an "A".
Great professor. He really knows his stuff. Good amount of work but nothing overwhelming. The class is very straight forward and grading is more than fair. Easy to do well if you put the time in, no tricks.

Possibly the most awesome professor ever. Has his lectures memorized and keeps everyone interested. Highly recommended.
Highly intelligent helpful prof. If you don't enjoy history that much but have to take it, take it with Russ. Knows his stuff like no other and will make sure you do too. Only problem is tests are all essay form, but just depends if you like that or not. Highly recommended.
GREAT professor. Russ is the best history prof at Udel. His lectures are very impressive, you would think he was reading from a book. He is a very nice guy and is very knowledgable about all types of things. Tests are not very hard, but are essays. Just explain everything! Detail is the key to get an A. I knew I was getting an A goin into the test.
awesome history prof, made the subject of modern american business interesting. extremely helpful and engaging, one of the smartest yet humble profs ive ever had. take any of his classes if you get the chance
Prof Russ is the man, simply put. He teaches the material really well, telling it to his students as if it were a semester long story. Very smart man who knows a lot of history. Had him for both HIST 200 and 206. Both classes there are 3 exams, and either discussion or paper writing. Not bad, great guy.
There's a reason Russ doesn't have 1 negative rating on here. I've had him for 2 classes soon to be 3 and it's awesome. He is very clear and concise and makes history interesting. He is extremely nice and approachable and very helpful. His essay tests may sound burdensome at first, but you soon learn it benefits you and you will earn higher grades.
Russ is definately the guy to have teaching u history. he makes it easy. plus he is funny and approachable and nice and decent but you have to read the book and take good notes. loved him and wish all professors could teach like him.
Russ is a very classy man. The History Department and the University as a whole is very lucky to have him. Definitely recommend.
As boring as business history sounds Russ made it interesting. Knows what he's talking about, and has written several books about American business. He also wants you to read several books about business during the semester, write him a 10 page paper, and take two exams. Definitely take his class if you have the opportunity.
Great teacher will make you love going to class. ONe of the most knowledgable teachers i have ever taken. highly recomended
The most amazing teacher ever! Speaks with such passion about the class. 3 tests--all essay but you will be fine. Just get the notes from class. He holds review sessions and is very helpful during office hours. MUST TAKE THIS CLASS!
TAKE THIS CLASS! I really thought this was going to be boring, because i hate history, but this class was so interesting and the tests are easy...just take notes in class and skim over the chapters and you will be fine. He is the best teacher i've had so far and would deff. take him again. sit in front of class though cuz he talks kinda low.
Russ is by far the best history professor I have ever had. You can tell he really loves teaching. He's very well organized and doesn't expect you to memerize the history of the world. He teaches (or reinforces) what we should have learned in high school. Much easier than most 100 level HIST courses
he doesn't take attendance but go to class! you can do really well by taking good notes and knowing a little bit of the documents for the exams. hes a great professor and you can do really well if you take good notes on what he says and study for the exam. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Best professor of all time. If you are going to leave UD or life any time in the near future I'd put having a class with Russ on the top of your list of things to do. Lectures are more than engaging and exams are not difficult at all if you just go to class
Literally one of the best teachers I have ever encountered. Loves teaching and it shows. Every studentg at UD should take a class of Russ' before they graduate. Even if you have no interest in history TAKE THIS CLASS! Great teacher, easy to understand, tests are exactly that material he covered. Just look at all of the positive comments!
Great teachers, his voice alone makes the class easy to pay attention. His personality and how excited he gets about history make it a fun class to go too.
Great teacher, easy to understand and breaks things down. Tests are all essay but very broad. His enthusiasm makes the class interesting and the material easier to remember. If you go to lecture you don't need the text book.
He is a boss. one of the best teachers ive ever had he's a great guy.
the man. take him. 3 essay tests but material is presented in organized mannor you basically can predict what will be on them. best teacher i've had.
Russ is the man. Easily the best teacher I've had since being at Udel. His lectures are very interesting and he loves his job. He is very clear with how he presents his lectures and his tests are directly correlated with them. 3 essay tests with no tricks, pretty straight forward. Definitely take him, you won't regret it!
Russ is an amazing professor! He gives make-ups if needed and is very personable. Although the class was at 9:05 he held everyones attention. Overall Russ makes history interesting and is by far the best professor I have had at the University of Delaware.
AWESOME class. some people may be worried about the 3 exams being essay but they were cake. he makes the lectures interesting, keeps your attention, and the exams have no tricks. the material is easy to take in and this was a great class. One of the best teachers I have had so far at UD. TAKE HIM!
Awesome teacher! So clear and easy to understand. Take this as a group B if you can. Just remember to use the documents on the tests and study his lectures and you should be fine.
LOVE HIM!! He is so nice and inspiring. He loves what he does and it shows in his class! He is clear, easy to understand, and talks at the perfect speed to take your notes. I recommend going to every class just because it does make it easier to comprehend. One thing though, make sure you get him as a discussion teacher, NOT A T.A.
Russ is the best - his lessons are very interesting, even if you have him at 9 in the morning!! His tests are fair, just outline textbook chapters before and you'll be fine! Would recommend him for any major!!
Russ is the man! I took his class early in my career at UD and I'm still talking about how good he is. He is hands down the best professor I've ever had at UD. He's clear, he's interesting and he's very helpful. He made me so interested in history, I considered switching majors. He's great, and I only wish all my professors were like him.
Professor Russ was one of the most interesting Professors I have ever had. He taught his class like a story and went slow enough for everyone to understand. He was so kind and I would love to take his class again. Definitely have him at least once!
LOVE him. Hated history in high school, but he made it seem like a story. Very nice and cares about what he is teaching you. Very helpful during office hours. I have never gotten anything lower than a B in his class, and I have taken all three that he offers haha.
one of the best professors at the u of d. makes history alive and exciting. exams are far from difficult, highly recommend!
I had Russ for 206 and 268. He is hands down my favorite professor I've had at the University. He knows what he's talking about and sincerely cares about what he is saying. Knows a lot of random information about history that's extremely interesting and keeps you engaged in the lecture. TAKE HIM IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE!
Professor Russ is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is interesting and especially for people who aren't great at history, Russ does a good job of teaching at a steady and appropriate pace for the entire class. I remember almost every lecture and never missed a class. You must take one of his classes before you graduate!
This was one of my favorite classes so far at UD. Russ is an excellent teacher. The way he describes history like a story makes it really interesting and not boring at all. His tests are straight-forward, if you study then you will do good. I loved him so much I'm going to take all the courses he teaches as free electives!
Hands down best teacher I have ever had. Incredible interesting class.
He is such a great professor. I'm terrible at history, and although it takes a lot of studying, but a good grade is very achievable. exams are essay exams, which is difficult, but again, if you study, you will do well.
Such a good professor, I was always made when I overslept and missed a lecture. Get in his discussion section, much more fun.
I have had so many excellent professors at UD, and Dr. Russ is certainly no exception. His lectures are always fascinating and he is so enthusiastic about teaching and history. I plan to take every course he teaches.
I just tried to submit a very complimentary rating for Dr. Russ and RateMyProfessors gave me an error that said the comments existed already (in his numerous pages of good reviews). Enough said!
Professor Russ is, without a doubt, the best professor I've ever had. He is extremely interested in his students and he organizes the material extremely well and is very interesting to listen to. If you have any doubt about whether to take this class, TAKE IT! You won't regret it!
Professor Russ is an amazing teacher. I really didn't like history prior to his class, but I never watched the time waiting for his class to end like I expected. He was so interesting and clear and very easy to talk to. If you get the chance, definitely take his class! You won't regret it! And there's 3 essay tests and they're very straightforward.
RUSS is the man! Dr. Russ is arguably the best professor at UD. I absolutely hated history prior of taking his class but his lectures are so interesting. Unlike other history professors, instead of just throwing bunch of random facts at you, he actually connects the dots and makes it so easy for you to get the material. Definitely recommend him.
Russ is chill and his class is entertaining if you can stay up at 9am. I couldnt, so I didnt go to class. The reason why this class was not "easy" was b/c the fat T.A. woman graded our essays and she was itchy and moaning always. The fact I had her for discussion didnt help. Rename nameless to her (take Russ's Disc) and you should be good for a B+
Great teacher, made history very interesting and fun to learn about. Take this class, discussion meets on fridays and boosts your grade and helps you understand the material better.
Fantastic professor. History is my worst subject by far, but Russ told everything like a story, which helped my understanding immensely more than just throwing a bunch of facts at me. TAKE HIM IF YOU GET A CHANCE. He loves what he does and you can easily tell.
One of the nicest and most caring professors you will ever have! Has great enthusiasm for teaching history and gives very organized notes, even though he does not use powerpoint presentations. As long as you attend class there isn't really a need for the textbook. Try to get him for discussion too. 2 written exams and a final, non-cumulative.
my favorite professor in delaware. made history my favorite class in delaware....and im a business major. I cannot say enough good things about this guy. Grades fair. I would actually look forward to going to this class. He keeps it SO interesting. If you put in a few hours of studying, youll do fine on the exams. All-in-all, hes the man.
Very interesting class, but also very comprehensive...Type notes in class because he speaks to quickly and in so much detail writing notes does not cut it... Great professor very helpful, extremely passionate about business history... 2 tests and a 10 page research paper...Great class for History or American History Majors
This was my second class with him and he is by far one of my favorite professors. I was always looking forward to class and his great lectures. He is a fair grader and all around nice guy, take any of his classes if you get the chance!
Best professor at udel hands down. Take his class.
He is the man, plain and simple.
A truly great professor who clearly loves his job and genuinely cares about each of his students. Take one of his classes!
He is an amazing lecturer, truly engaging. He makes you want to go to class and become interested in the topic. Best professor I've had at UD so far. Take him!
Abolutely amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable in his field of study. HE speaks very clearly in lecture which makes note taking easy. His exams are very straightforward and very broad making it very easy to do well in his class without a lot of effort. If you have the opportunity to take him I would strongly suggest taking it with Russ
I'm definitely not a history person and I was scared before taking this class, but Russ makes you interested in history. Just pay attention during lecture and take notes from the book and you should be fine. Three tests - 8 short answers (pick 4) and 3 essays (pick 1). Those are your only grades so just make sure you do well on those.
such a great professor just study notes and read the text book and exams will be easy
Professor Russ is an absolutely fantastic professor! His lectures are interesting and easy to follow, and the exams are straight and to the point. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes!!
Russ is by far my favorite professor at UD. He's very engaging during lecture and his a great speaker. He's extremely knowledgable and genuinely cares about the students. Tests weren't that bad and discussions were easy. I'd recommend him for any class he teaches.
Russ is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable and you can tell he is interested and cares about what he does. He is very reasonable and organized.
Loved this class! Wasn't really interested in the subject, but he makes you interested. He talks about history like he's telling a story and every class is interesting. Very helpful, very clear, great speaker. Tests are one essay and 4 short answer. I'd recommend reading the book just for detail to help essay grades. Take this class!
Russ is the man. Coolest teacher at UD and is a genius. Notes are straightforward in lecture format so be sure to take good notes. Discussions are also mandatory since attendance there is 10% of your grade. Pay attention and do a decent amount of studying and you can expect around a B+.
Professor Russ is definitely a great teacher. He is clear and helpful. However, you HAVE to go to class if you want to be successful. His tests are based greatly on the lecture and the textbook so if you keep up with the syllabus you will do great. I recommend him even if you hate history.
Russ is the man. I have him now for HIST206 and his lectures are extremely interesting and engaging. Even if you don't like history, Russ just has a way of making you want to learn more. Extremely knowledgeable, hands down one of my favorite professors at UD so far. If you have to take a HCC class, take 206 with him. Won't regret it.
Professor Russ was the most interesting teacher I had during my time at UD. I was genuinely excited to go to class every morning. Tests are easy, they are essays based on lectures. There is a 10 page research paper but you can write on any topic you choose really.
Russ was a really awesome, clear, and fair professor. If you need a history requirement, take 206 with him. 3 written exams where you choose the essay you want with some short IDs. My TA, Liz Jones was great as well. Not a stressful class, put in the effort, go to class and take notes and you will get As and Bs.
Russ is, by far, my favorite professor at UD. His lectures are fascinating and the tests are fairly easy if you come to class. Russ is the man!
He is such a great professor. His class is actually interesting and he is funny too! I definitely recommend it except the TA's grade the work and they grade harsh.
Try as hard as you can to get him. I absolutely used to hate history and be soooo bored, but he makes it very interesting. Like he is really saightforward and his tests are really easy (Just an essay and discussing a few historical events/ppl)Make sure you study in advance though. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject as well.
BEST PROFESSOR AT UD! He makes the class extremely interesting. Every UD student should take a course with Russ.
Russ is the man! I took 206 with hi. last semester to fulfill an honors credit, and I liked it so much I took another class with him even though I'm not a history major or minor. He's SO smart and makes everything really interesting. He's really engaging and just overall an awesome professor and great guy. Highly recommmend him!
BEST PROFESSOR AT UD! Was never really into history but his class was great!
Without a doubt my favorite professor. Incredibly nice, loves the subject matter, very engaging. Tons of reading however (5 books cover-cover). Fairly easy grader.
Professor Russ is awesome! He made the History of Delaware interesting (and that's saying something). He speaks clearly and slowly, so it's easy to take notes. His tests are straightforward, but definitely take notes from the readings because using info from them will get you an A.
Dr. Russ is a wonderful professor. He loves what he does and makes the class interesting! That being said, he is terrible when it comes to responding to e-mails... Make sure you read the books he assigns and pay attention during lectures.
Russ is a great history professor. His lectures are most often interesting even though its history. 3 exams are the only things for this course. Graded easy. Final is not cumulative. Take this class if you can for a breadth.
He is the best professor at UD. He explains things very clearly, tells history like its a story. If you don't get something go to office hours or talk after class, don't send an email. He specialized in Delaware history and throws it in the material in a very relevant way. The books required are good and not boring so definitely get the books.
HE IS SO HOT! Anyway, the class is pretty easy if you read and pay attention. I'm a poli sci major so it was a piece of cake for me and actually learned a lot that I didn't know. Russ really does great job making things clear and easy to understand. He really is a great guy too. And pretty funny if you're smart enough to get his jokes. Take him!
Russ is THE man. His lectures are really interesting even if the topic is bland. He is an extremely fair grader. If you get the basics of the questions right then you're golden. You HAVE to go to class or else you won't know anything. Don't bother buying the textbooks. Love him.
Russ is probably one of the best professors at UD. He is extremely enthusiastic about the subject and is great at lecturing. Will need to read the text book for more examples for the tests.
Really enthusiastic lecturer. Attendance is not mandatory, but you'll actually want to be there. Discussion TAs aren't the best.
This is my second class taking Russ and he is the best teacher I have ever had. I don't study for his exams and I always do well. He explains everything in class very well. Expects you to read, but isn't a tough read. Tests are all essay and on very vague topics. If you can, TAKE HIS CLASS!!! You will not regret it at all.
This was one of the greatest classes I have taken at UD so far. Dr. Russ made land disputes and tax law seem exciting. He is such an intelligent person and he conveys this knowledge to his students in a fascinating and lasting manner.
Dr. Russ was an instant hit at our first lecture this semester. He's one of the best speakers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, and his class doesn't require much work... But that doesn't mean you won't learn anything. He took a potentially boring class, and made it interesting with his boundless enthusiasm.
Russ is one of the best lecturers I have had. He is a great teacher and I would absolutely take him again and I would recommend this class to everyone. There were only 3 papers, 5-8 pages each, very open ended.
Professor Russ was awesome. His lectures are very interesting and he tells you everything you need to know. Make sure to read just to have some specific points for exams. Exams are in essayshort answer format but they are on really broad topics so as long as you pay attention and have a few examples its very easy. He's always ready to help.
This class was the bright spot for my semester. He makes everything about American history interesting. He understands most students are there because of breadth requirements and the difficulty of his class is adjusted to it. Testing criteria is clear. The ONLY drawback is the discussion sections (aka whatever he doesnt teach.) TAKE HIM!!
There are no powerpoint slides during class, it is purely notes taken based off of the verbal lecture. Russ is very passionate about what he teaches which makes the class more interesting. If you read and take good notes in class the exams are easy to get an A on.
Russ is probably my favorite teacher in this entire school; his lectures are interesting, his knowledge of Delaware is unmatched, his humor is awesome, his enthusiasm is great, and if you show up and pay attention, the class should not be hard. Would love to take all my classes with him.
Russ is a wonderful professor and very passionate about what he does. He's suprisingly funny and an expert in the History of Delaware, this guy definitely knows what hes talking about. Tests are pretty difficult even though the essay topics are broad, just because there is so much info in the class. Overall great guy and and a great class.
No doubt the best professor at the University. Just go to class. You will enjoy class more than any other course you have taken. I was actually sad the class was over.
I CANNOT say enough good things about Professor Russ. He is truly a fantsatic lecturer and SO passionate about history. He is Delaware's state historian for crying out loud. This man is absolutely captivating and can interest even people who find history boring. He inspired me to declare History Education as my major!
Russ is an engaging lecturer and tells everything like a story, which makes the class much more interesting. He does inject left-leaning political views into lectures at times. Go to class, take good notes, and read the book to prepare for exams. All exams are 4 short answers and 1 broad essay with options. The TA was decent and graded fairly.
Professor Russ is one of the most fantastic professors I've had while at UD. He's engaging, dynamic, entertaining, and incredibly passionate about the material he covers. I took HIST 309: Money, Markets & Mischief (Business History in Modern America), and Professor Russ combines documentaries, lectures, and readings to create a great class!
He is the best professor I've had so far at UD. He is a genius and so passionate in his lectures. Do the readings (it's the only homework) and you'll be fine. There are 3 exams- you pick 1 of 3 essay questions to answer & 4 out of 8 given short answers to respond to. Go to class even though there's no attendance. He's amazing, take this class.
Fair warning: There is a lot of reading in the class. However, the lectures make it totally worth it. John Russ is by far the best history teacher at the school. He's so interesting, I never spaced out in his class. His tests are pretty easy, just pay attention in class and review the class vocabulary words and you'll be fine. He's very funny!
I'm not a huge history person but Russ's lectures were pretty engaging, good breadth choice, easy class if you read and listen to lectures. Lots of reading homework but nothing hard.
Dr. Russ was an amazing professor!! He is so knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. So nice too!
He was awesome!
Dr. Russ is an excellent professor. Lectures are engaging and filled with interesting historical facts. You can tell he has read nearly everything with regard American history and presents material in a storybook-like manner. Teaches Delaware History in an insightful way with a clear enthusiasm for the state. 2 exams and 1 term paper. Awesome.
I loved every single class with Dr. Russ. He is a very engaging speaker so lectures seemed to go fast. Grade consisted of 3 papers, all on broad topics allowing us to research and write about things we liked. He genuinely cared about his students, talked to us like we're people, never kept us the full 75 minutes. Take his class, you'll love him!
Dr. Russ is to date the best professor at UD. He is a great lecturer and genuinely hilarious person. He only has 3 tests, none are Comprehensive. Attending class is a must though because he doesn't use any lecture materials or website. His word is what notes are taken on. His pace is fine and he makes the material interesting enough to remember.
Dr. Russ was awesome! He taught using stories and made history fun! Not an easy A, but worth giving the time and effort.
He is an amazing lecturer! I never skipped because the class goes by so fast. It's important to take good notes because he doesn't use any slideshows. Just study your notes and find some key points in the textbook and you'll be fine (only 3 exams).
Dr. Russ is one of the best professors I've ever had. If you ever have the chance to take a class with him, do it! You won't regret it. As long as you show up to class and take notes, you'll get an A. His lectures are fascinating, he's a great guy, and you'll actually learn interesting information. Highly recommended; take him regardless of major
Dr. Russ is the BEST. I don't particularly like history or care about the History of Delaware for that matter but he makes it interesting, like telling a story. Only two exams and a paper. Very relaxed class and also my favorite I've ever taken. Very manageable while taking other time consuming courses like organic chemistry.
Dr. Russ is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about history. Lectures consist only of him talking (no powerpoint) but were interesting and engaging. There were 3 exams that were 4 short answers and 1 essay, so you have to really know the material. That being said, if you take good notes and read the book, you can do well. Highly recommend!
Extensive knowledge of American history and the voice of a radio host leave Russ' lecturing ability unparalleled. He clearly cares about both the subject he teaches and the success of his students. He is also very friendly so feel free to ask for help.
I loved this class! Dr. Russ' lectures are fascinating and truly hold an individual's attention. This is a unique course compared to others in the department and I highly recommend taking it. He is easily accessible outside of class if you need him and really cares about his students. Course had a midterm, final, and 10 page paper. Great professor!
Dr. Russ is probably one of my favorite professors I've had at UD. His lectures incorporate the main points of the class with small asides about his life as a historian. The main part of your grade comes from a 10+ page paper, but if you pick a good topic it isn't hard. I'm not a History major but if I was I would take more classes with Dr. Russ.
Prof Russ is the man, he's one of the most interesting teachers I've had at UD thus far. He is very passionate, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. He is not the clearest on his assignment/ grading criteria but if you put in the effort to the assignment you will get a good grade. Take him! You won't regret it!
He is amazing! Super interesting! Very relaxed class and learned a lot. Pretty easy if you are good at open-discussion lectures and applying that information.
he's super-duper smart and really passionate about teaching and the material so that makes the class way more enjoyable. the material isn't super boring like a normal history class but the only grades are a midterm, final, and a 10-page essay so if you like having many different grading opportunities this is the class for you
I'm not a huge fan of history but, Dr. Russ is the BEST professor I've had at UD. The class is super laid back. The tests are easy and straight forward. As long as you go to class, read the book, and take notes an A is easily achievable. He also genuinely cares about the success of his students so don't be afraid to ask him for help.
Overall, Russ is a very good lecturer. It can sometimes get a little dry and is difficult to draw connections to the overall theme of the class, but he's an interesting guy. For the three papers there wasn't much guidance but he graded really easily.
One of the best professors ever-- you have to show up to class to get the notes, but otherwise there is no extra work other than exam prep and writing one essay, which he graded very fairly. He is so interesting and always drops super cool facts so attending class really wasn't a hassle.
Definitely the best lecturer I've had. He's prepared, full of cool facts, and is there for students. The assassins course has a midterm and final, but they're easy to prepare for, and then there's a 10 page paper that is actually fun to do because the possible topics you might come up with are always interesting. Using Audible for the books helps.
Dr. Russ is the BEST professor I have had at UD, have already signed up for another one of his classes. Reading required texts will be helpful, but are not necessary to receiving a passing grade. Lectures are incredibly fascinating and entertaining. He's been quoted by WSJ for a piece about DE history for good reason. A charismatic genius!
Professor Russ is such a caring professor. His lectures can be a bit boring and there are no PowerPoints to take notes from, so be sure to pay a lot of attention during lectures. The exams are 4 short answer questions and one essay, but not difficult at all. He is a solid choice for HIST106 if you're looking to fulfill a breadth requirement.
I took this as my Honors Colloquim, and the class was based around Delawares Judicial System. I was not excited for the class. But when I tell you that this man is wonderful, he really is. Hes nice, he is encouraging and cheerful, and so knowledgeable. There were no tests and only 3 papers with topics and you could choose what to write about.
Professor Russ is great, and attending lectures are a MUST! There is little to no assignments when it comes to HIST106, only exams, readings, and (likely) discussions. Get some coffee or a latte during the morning and strap in if you're taking it in the morning. It's an easy course if you're looking for credits or interested in history!
I took Dr. Russ's colloquium on the Delaware Court of Chancery and Delaware Incorporation. Though I did not expect it going into the class, the lectures were very interesting and easy to follow. The grading consisted of three 5-page research papers, all given with ample time to complete. I would take this class if given the chance!
Class was moderately easy, take 3 exams (counting the final) and discussion participation. Attendance isnt required and tests are online.
One of the best professors at UD. He is extremely caring and wants his students to succeed. He isn't very available through email but after class and during office hours he is. His classes are lectures only but they are very entertaining. You learn a lot and are given fairly easy assignments.
Great Professor, best history professor at UD. Solid lectures and he's a very caring guy. Only assignments were two exams, a final, and a paper. Every exam was open note.
Russ just is the best professor at UD. I took this class specifically to have him again and convinced my friends to take him. He loves making connections with students and legitimately loves his job, & it shows. He is charismatic and passionate about Delaware history. This class is shockingly interesting and perfect for anyone who likes US history.
I absolutely loved Prof. Russ. I was dreading having to take a history requirement, but I genuinely enjoyed listening to his lectures. The exams for the class are timed in class essays with a prompt, He grades them very fairly and you're given everything you need. He is a very caring professor and I could not speak more highly of him.
Professor Russ is so entertaining, he treats his lectures like he's narrating a true crime podcast. If you go to lectures and at least try to do all the reading, you'll do great. I'd recommend his class to anyone, even people that "don't like history."
Genuinely one of the best professors at UD. He's clearly passionate about the things he teaches and the lectures reflect that. While there aren't a lot of assignments, any exams are more so about having a good understanding of concepts rather than rigorous memorization. You don't have to go, you WANT to go, and I wish I could've had him again.
Professor Russ is amazing. He lectures like he is narrating a national geographic documentary, but he's very knowledgeable about history. It's clear from the first day that he truly cares about his students and wants to share his passion for history. Overall a great guy, only 3 written exams, No final, and participation isnt mandatory. I recommend.
Knows what he's talking about
Prof Russ had been my fav professor at UD so far. He is so passionate about what he teaches, and his lectures are entertaining. He doesn't post the notes so make sure you attend class, and only has three exams that are more on comprehension than memorizing every little detail. I hope I get to have him again. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Professor Russ is amazing! His lectures are so interesting, attendance is not mandatory, and the class content is not difficult. He is so kind-hearted and cares about his students. My only complaint would be the fact that there are only 3 grades for the whole semester (3 exams), so there is no way to boost your grade with other assignments.
Overall, I really liked Professor Russ! He was very kind, knowledgable and always willing to help. The class itself wasn't too hard, but I wish we had more than 50 minutes for the written exams. I'm the type of writer that explains topics in great detail which resulted in me constantly running out of time on the exams, which hurt my grade a little.
He's an extremely nice person. He doesn't post lecture slides or anything so you have to go to class but he makes it interesting and seems passionate about the topics. There are only 3 exams which are essays but he's a fair grader and if you go to class and pay attention you'll be fine.
Really engaging lectures, and a really nice guy. However, his TAs are really harsh graders and there is no set rubric for his exams. That being said, I would have had a better time if I had better TAs for this course. Only 3 exams, so no other way to improve your grade.
Professor Russ is truly amazing. I could not speak more highly on him. He lectures with enthusiasm and he is incredibly kind. Grades consist of threeHe is a very fair grader. I was absolutely dreading having to take a history class, but Professor Russ is one of my favorite professors and I loved taking his class and I would highly recommend it
Professor Russ was great. He made Hist106 very interesting and I would recommend to someone in need of a history requirement. He is very passionate about his work and cares about teaching his students. He would give personal stories about history topics that made the class very interesting.
Prof. Russ is great. He's very respectful and it is apparent that he cares for each and every one of his students. Attendance isn't taken and there are 3 fairly easy tests, but I suggest you go to his lectures to take notes. The only downside from his class is that it could be boring at times. Overall, I would recommend taking this professor
I 100% recommend Professor Russ. He made lectures extremely interesting and engaging, he was also so accommodating in a test make-up that I needed to do. Honestly, any class that he's in I would take, he's that interesting. He is truly passionate which translates to his students. An overall great guy.
Professor Russ makes lectures engaging and is very accommodating. While exams can be challenging, his passion for the subject is evident. The class is manageable with unstuckstudy ai and the textbook as study aids.
Prof. Russ is extremely intelligent and knows what he's talking about. Very nice guy as well. I wasn't entirely captivated by his lectures, but there's not much you can do to engage your class in big lecture halls. The lectures did start to get a bit repetitive and boring, but I respect him a lot nonetheless.
Do not be scared when he walks in and starts lecturing with no warning on the first day. Probably the smartest most well spoken professor I have ever had. There's only 3 test grades which sucks and they're no notes written response tests, but take this class, he gives great context to everything.
This class was pretty easy if you're good at taking notes. His notes are based on outlines and 98% is rest to you taking. The only grades were the 3 exams and section's discussions of sources of the week. I really like Prof. Russ and is someone who knows what he's teaching. Though sometimes will give extra context (goes on little tangent).
This class was fun and Prof. Russ was amazing. He knew what he was talking about and lectures were very organized. Each assassination got a book you got to read and will discuss at the end of each person. 2 exams and one 10 page research paper that was pretty easy. I really enjoyed the class and highly recommend to anyone to take this course.
He is so passionate and you will learn a lot but if you are taking this class for a breath do not take him. your grade is 85% test and 15% attendance with the test being all essays in a blue book. For a breath it's not worth the studying. It is easy to do well but you really have to take good notes and know absolutely everything that he addressed
If you have the slightest interest in history, TAKE A CLASS WITH RUSS! I was timid to take 337 because of the paper, but the work is an afterthought when the lectures are practically live true crime shows. Russ is seriously a wealth of knowledge! Before you know it, you'll be going full on Good Will Hunting at the bar about it. Utterly engaging!
Russ is super nice and has very engaging lectures. It's hard to miss a class because nothing is posted and there is no homework aside from keeping up with the textbook readings. 3 essay/short-answer exams and a participation grade.
Professor Russ is very smart and knows what he is talking about. He runs his lecture as if he's telling one long story and does it well. Very detailed and he does it all off the top of his head. There is no attendance but if you miss class enough you will fall behind. Only negative is that there are 3 written tests and thats all your graded on.
Russ is a GREAT guy. Very passionate about what he teaches and goes into great detail. Discussions held by TA's that also grade your exam. Grading of based off 3 written exams, and participation in discussion. Structured like APUSH . Grading isnt too tough. Overall good class. Would recommend
great class and great professor. truly cares about the material and is a great teacher. my favorite class by far and it's not even for my major
Dr. Russ is a great professor. His lectures are a little boring at times but you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. There are only 3 exams (no other grades) so I would say this class is not an easy A. My TA really helped me get through this course, they are the ones that will be grading your exams.
He is one of the best professors here. I would 100% take his class again if I could. So understanding!! I will say that the class is very lecture heavy, and meanwhile attendance isn't mandatory, the tests are a big part of the grade and have material from the lectures.
Dr. Russ is awesome! He made American history interesting to learn about with his passion + personal anecdotes intertwined. Only graded on the three exams and participation from your discussion sections. Exams are very writing heavy, but overall were easy if you studied. Read the textbook, it helps when you get to the exam. Take this class!
Dr. Russ is awesome. I enjoyed this class so much that I'm taking another class of his next semester.
