Good Teacher, but grading scale is a little wacked

OMG this teacher is amazing, he really knows what he teaches you can bring anything up in his class and he will know the answer or find it out. the essay tests are a little annoying but all in all he is a kick ass teacher...actually one of the only reasons i go to school lol

I am a former student of Dr. Ruy's Ab psych, bio psych and research methods classes. His lectures are straightforward, coherent, informative and entertaining. It is easy to pass his class if your attendence is satisfatory and you do the work assigned. He is extremely helpful, inspirational, and has a young spirit which makes going to class great!

I didnt think that his grading scale was weird. He is very interesting, fun to listen to, and knows what he is talking about. He is fun and for the papers just follow the criteria and you will be fine. It was a good class. I enjoyed it alot.

he's a great teacher! he applies almost everything to everyday life that you can relate to. definitely makes the subject interesting and fun. the only thing is his quizzes are hard, but they're available online so you can take them a bunch of times, do them in groups and have people help you out.

He is an amazing teacher! I wouldn't mind taking a 4 hour lecture course with him! However, if you don't like to write, it might be a little difficult. In Social Psychology we don't have any test, but we do write papers every week on studies that we've done during the week. He is highly recommended!! I think he grading system is extremely fair!

great teacher!

i loved going to professor ruys class. he managed to keep a 3hr lecture fun and interesting. it's definitely the best class i have ever taken. there's a lot of writing, but if you follow his layout you'll be fine. i don't know why people are having a hard time with the quizzes, they're actually pretty easy. i'm taking a class w/ him next semester!

Great teacher! Makes everything fun and interestings. Lots of writing but we are in college so that is expected. He is also funny and hot. Take his class!

By far my favorite professor. I keep taking psychology classes just to get him as a teacher. He is very cool and entertaining. Doesnt believe in taking tests during class, and if he gives them online you get to retake them as much as you want. Essays are a little hard but managable if you follow the guidelines. Take a calss of his!

Attendance does not impact your grade but I showed up whenever possible just because his lectures were so interesting and fun. There are 4 intense papers throughout the year. No tests, just online quizzes that can be retaken. Best Las Po prof I've had so far and it is obvious that he cares about his students

To be really fair, I was in Dr. Ruys class for a short time. It wasn't his fault, we had a lousy group for our group projects and at times he was really confusing in what he said in his office to us and then in class!!! I like Dr. Ruys very much,I wasn't ready for his class and the conflict with other classes made it really difficult to focus!!!

I'd have to agree that he has intense papers, but if he offers to correct your paper before turning it in DO IT. He's packed full of energy, very helpful, very smart and you'll learn a lot from him. Many people who take him become passionate about psychology after. VERY worth taking, but not necessarily easy.

He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Very funny and kick back. His papers weren't all that hard. I would say that his class is an easy A class.

Doctor Ruys is a fun and extremely enthuisastic teacher. He's funny, intersting and knows how to keep your interest. Fromt he first class day, he's brought attention to our enthusiasm for psychology as well. You will learn lots.Lots of essays. Bk work is useful. No test only online short quizzes. Books and resourses can be used for the quizzes.

He is a really good teacher who really seems to enjoy his job! Classes are never boring, he makes lectures really fun and likes to get the class involved. He is very enthusiastic with lots of energy! I looked forward to going to this class. He is not an easy A but if you show up, do the work, and take your papers seriously you will do well!

his class is great. i really only went to class to get info for my essays, but he also made psych in general really interesting. he's really energetic and into the subject. the essays arent really hard, just time consuming. no in class tests!

Fabulous teacher! One of the most interesting classes and best teacher I've ever had. The papers are time consuming; however, if you email them ahead of time he will preview and guarantee an A after you make corrections. Test are all online open book. Loved this class!!!

Really good teacher! Class is very interesting and fun topics! No homework...only essays. They're not too bad though. Just read the book and know the terms. Only two short easy presentations. Take his class. He's cute too :-)

My favorite teacher by far. He is so nice, so cool, funny, and inspiring. He helped me decide on psychology for my major. Definitely take him!

He is really good. Easy works. Just attend to his class and you'll get "A". No test in this class, just essays and online quizzes. Too easy. You can retake the quiz many times you want. I guranteed, you should take him. You'll get a lot of fun to his class.

I learned so much about the world in this class. I actually enjoyed coming to class.

Very clear professor. He tries to engage students during lectures so it's not difficult to pay attention. His quizzes online can be taken AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT! Besides that, the two term papers weren't too difficult, and the final project isn't impossible.

wow, he is so funny and so easy to stay awake during class, he doesnt pressure you to attend but highly recommend you try, the quizes can be taken multiple times and he is always willing to answer any questions and also always willing to slow down :) super nice too

Psych 2 is def not as easy as the other psyc class. It is all point based, after you miss 40 points you can no longer get an A. attend every class because he announces and gives notes in class tht wont be posted on blackboard. before ur project is due see him in office hrs he is extremely helpful. dont miss class.

Ruys is a great teacher. There is A LOT of group work in this class, so if you enjoy those kind of assignments over exams this is the class for you. He definitely makes you earn your grade, but as long as you pay attention to what he says in class you'll be fine when it comes to writing papers and doing presentations.

Professor Ruys is awesome! I have only taken his online courses, but they are easy and understandable. As long as you do your homework and projects, you will do well. The text book he uses is simple and easy to read. I highly recommend Prof. Ruys! :)

I took his Psych 1 class and ended up with a really high A. Quizzes are all online, they are easy as long as you read the material. Discussions and going to class are very important it's about 2% of your grade, which can make up for other areas. Project was easy and straightforward. I recommend Dr. Ruys!

I read the reviews before I took that class & I thought it would be fun but hard. So much more fun than I expected and easy if you just pay attention to the lectures. He tells you everything you need to know and he's incredibly helpful. You just have to ask. You CAN get an A in this class. I didn't, but I was so close!

This is definitely the most difficult psychology class, but Ruys is an an awesome teacher, and is really cool to talk to. If you need help on papers and presentations, I would suggest going to his office hours. I believe that's what really landed me the A in his class. Don't turn in anything late.

Hands down the best class ive ever taken at laspo. I was always interested in what he had to talk about, and was never bored. He kept the subjects relatable to us and was funny too. The assignments werent too bad either, and we always did alot of in class activities that really caught my intrest.

Loved this class! no tests and the online quizzes are not bad at all! i ended up with an A because the class is super easy! it consists of discussion questions which are submitted online and online quizzes! super awesome and easy class!

He is awesome! He is extremely fun to listen to and always makes whatever he's teaching exciting. You don't realy "need" to be in his class every day. But ruys is such an awesome teacher that I loved coming to class each day. Pretty easy class. Cool teacher. All tests/quiz are online, open book. 1 Final project at end of semester.

The BEST teacher i've ever had! If you're pursing a career in psychology, I extremely recommend taking at least one of his classes. Not only does he teach psych better than anyone, but he also gives advice about college, graduate school, and careers. Great teacher, and he actually made me want to come to class to listen to his lecture!

Took psych 1 my second year at Las Po, I rarely showed up and still got an A. Most of the work is online and quizzes can be taken as many times as you want, he also offers extra credit. Just take the quizzes, do the discussions and the project at the end of the semester and it's an easy A. He was actually interesting when I went to class too.

excellent professor! He really makes class interesting and funt. Assignments are clear and a reasonable amount of work. an A is easy to achieve as long as you do the work. making notes helps but without these you will do fine as well

I have nothing but positive things to say about him! He's so energetic, funny, smart and loves what he teaches. Just do the online quizzes and show up to lecture and you'll be good to go! I wish there were more teachers like him at LPC :)

He is a great teacher who is very passionate about what he does. He knows his psychology and teaches it very well. Class is pretty easy all the work is 8 open book quizes online that you can take as many times as you want but, they are difficult so read and go to lecture in his class. He does take attendance. NO FINAL! Take him for Psyc!

Dr. Ruys is an amazing teacher! He is very very helpful and very clear. He is great at what he does! There is NO HOMEWORK and only 8-10 online open book quizes you can take as many times as you want. No final either, just a group project. If you have to take psych take Dr. Ruys! You will love it and learn something! Great class!

Super easy class. Online quizzes every week and most of the questions you can find off google. One group project at the end of the semester which is also super easy. Easy A.

Dr. Ruys is a great teacher for lecture halls. The class was so large but he is a great public speaker and keeps you awake during the lectures. The class assignments are mainly only making it really easy to miss class without it even remotely effecting your grade. The book is 100% needed. Don't be lazy on your readings. No final. Very simple tasks.

His class was such a blast. This review is way over-due, but I had him in the spring of 2013 and I actually changed my major to this because of this class! He made it super interesting and fun! It was so great being in his class!

Really cool guy. Quizzes almost every Thursday, they are the biggest part of grade so don't bomb them. No written final just a small presentation.

He's a good teacher. He is a really good speaker like everyone says, he's very well spoken and educated about everything he talks about. He's one of those teachers that make you question changing your major. I really loved him! Highly recommend!

He is an amazing teacher. His lectures are so interesting and you actually want to attend class. There are no tests, just online, open book, quizzes that you are allowed to take as many times as you want to get the grade you want. There is also a final group project but it isn't too hard if you put in a little effort. Great class/professor!

All our tests are online and we are encouraged to Google the answers or ask a friend. The only big assignment we are doing is the group Research Project which counts as our final. This class is great if you are trying to get requirements done like I am. Recommend taking him! Plus he's hilarious.

This class was supper easy. I do not like psychology, I didnt even pass the first time I took it in class with a different professor. I passed his class with an A . His blackboard assignments were easy and can take quizzes multiple time. Your grade depends on you ! Taking him again for Psychology 12 !

Dr. Ruys was an amazing and hilarious teacher. He gave the field of psychology a new twist in his lectures. You will never be bored in his class because he is always making jokes. I hope I have him again in the future because he was amazing and obviously knew what he was talking about.

Dr. Ruys is pretty cool and really funny. His class is very straight forward as long as you read. You get what you put into it.

Such a genuine person. Great sense of humor and loves engaging with students. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Notes are powerpoints, there are in class group work, class discussions.. Tries to make class fun and uplifting. All homework and tests online. One essay at the end of the semester. Overall, a positive person who loves his job.

His class is very interesting. He uses a lot of humor through his lectures. Ruys hardly gives out any homework. You do take quizzes online but they aren't hard at all.

Ruys is probably one of the best teachers on campus! His lectures are filled with interesting information and he throws in personal stories that help you remember the information. All homework and tests are online; all you have to do is show up and do the blackboard assignments and you should pass with an A

Great teacher, Super funny and really helpful

Really, really great professor who is clearly in love with psychology. He made general psych fun and always had a story or a joke or something that he could use to clarify if the class seemed to need more help understanding something. Funny, smart. Tests online, final group/indiv project that we presented in like a science-fair setup.

Took his online course. Assignments were due every other Thursday. Extremely straight forward assignments and easy enough to complete a day or two in advance if you're a procrastinator like me. Never taken a psych class before and it was still interesting even though it was online.

If you're deciding who to take for physch, TAKE HIM! He's an amazing teacher. The tests and homework are online and you have about a week to finish each section. His lectures are amazing and he's a great teacher! It also doesn't hurt that his personality is a solid A+! I would definitely take him. Wish he taught every subject

This class was an amazing online class! Took it for credit and I'm also a psychology major. I learned a lot from this class. I ended up getting a high A in this class. Just complete the quizzes, online participation, and smaller write ups, and you'll receive an A.

Terrific course, it all pertains to everyday life and some controversial topics plus current social concerns. He is a caring Professor and his responses are timely and understanding. Highly recommend! The subject matter, plus the awesome Prof equals a WIN-WIN! Thanks for reading!

There is a good amount of reading, however, I really enjoyed this course. Professor Ruys has many discussions of different controversial topics he puts into the course and made it very engaging to discuss with other students. Overall, a great professor and would definitely take him again!

He's great at teaching his class. The three tests he gives are fairly simple and you can get an A if you spend enough time working on the papers. I would love to take his class again in the future.

Great teacher. He's funny and easy to work with. He wants you to succeed. There is a lot of work but he helps you and gives you time to work on it. This class really prepared me for my future psychology classes. Total would take again and would recommend!

I love John! One regret I have is not taking all my classes with him in person(took 1,4, and 12 with him), he has so many great stories and you really get to connect and understand his grave passion for psychology. Take him when you can, he's a blessing to be taught by.

Though I took his class online you can tell how caring he is. He truly cares about his students and isnt so harsh when grading. You do need to participate a lot in group discussions and you have a quiz and 30 question exam every Saturday but as long as you read the chapters youll be fine. The quizzes are time consuming but they help the info stick

Psych 4: very fun person and great class. Psych 25: same, but i recommend Don't take this class unless you LOVE researching and are committed to psychology as a field of work. He cares about your future and makes it impossible to fail. "I never want to see you again." All classes: Weekly online quizzes: open book, no due date, unlimited retakes

Professor Ruys sets clear expectations from the beginning. This course heavily relies upon participation on the Cengage platform. There are weekly discussions that correspond with the weekly modules. Show up, participate, and stay on top of completing the Cengage modules. A very informative and inclusive course!

PSYC25 is a difficult class, but Dr. Ruys gives amazing feedback and help. You can tell he is extremely passionate about teaching and truly cares about his students. This class helped prepare me so well for the transition to a 4-year! I can't thank Dr. Ruys enough for that!! The class requires a lot of work, but it is so worth it in the end! :)

Took general psychology and life-span psychology with him online. They were both pretty straight-forward classes, and well-organized on Canvas (which is super important for online classes). If you do the work, you'll pass. Gives extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester for participating in LPC research studies.

I took psyc 12 online with him and it was amazing. Bought the access code and I just read the chapters on there before doing the mastery training. There were discussion posts and reflections. It was really easy.

This class is for psychology majors and a research to do at the end of the semester. He always there to help you if you need help. The tip I got from his tests by my friend was just read the terms in the chapters but its a lot of info on there. Hes amazing and I work hard with my group.

The class was very straighforward and an easy A. Homework there was a good amount of reading but the homework and discussions were very simple.

I took this class online and it was overall easy. The discussion board can be hard and it has to be 700-800 words. Quizzes can be taken unlimited times and there is no final. One big interview project that is due at the end of the semester. Only bad thing about this class is that he takes forever to grade.

The whole semester, we only had 26 assignments. You do some correlation assignments on excel but he gives video lectures w/step by step instructions. There is a 15 page research paper at the end which is daunting but he prepares you & meets with your group to make sure you're on the right page. Sometimes hard to contact him. He's a great professor!

Had him for summer semester so it was fast paced. He was a very good teacher. work was easy if you knew the material. quizzes easy and you had multiple chances. would take again. learned a lot from this class. hes one of the few good teachers at las positas

Professor Ruys was really a chill professor and I enjoyed taking this class. I felt like his assignments were easy to understand as long as you read the book. Would recommend taking this professor.

This class is extremely easy. There isn't much work, and you can keep doing the homework until you get 100%. You also get unlimited attempts on the tests, and you should get 100% on the discussions as long as you complete them. I almost finished the class with 100%. Professor Ruys isn't very accessible outside of class, but it's an easy A.
