Uses a lot of real world examples that really help connect material with your life. One midterm and a final. Pretty easy if you take notes in class lectures. Several speeches that start off easy and gradually get a little harder. Great clear speaker who wants his students to succeed and is extremely caring, yet chill. I'd definitely recommend him.

Great class. Everything is so easy and really makes presenting not seem so intimidating...i don't think its possible to fail this class. There is no homework, 3 speeches, a midterm and take home final. I wouldn't take comm with anyone else!

John is really cool and is probably one of my favorite professors at state. I hate public speaking but he really motivates you to try to be comfortable about it. 3 main speeches, 1 midterm & 1 take home final. They're all easy.

BEEEST TEACHER EVER! John is really friendly, crystal clear about everything, easygoing, and a great person/professor. You really can talk to about anything. The class is only a 200 point class, and basically a discussion class, not lecture. He makes you feel at home with awesome.

This professor rocked my world. It wasn't some plain speech class. Mr. Ryan is engaging and makes you embody the material. If you just show up and participate you're guaranteed a decent grade. Speeches are fairly easy and he's the most comical guy in the world. I highly advise students to take his class.

Easiest class I've had, Ryan is an awesome teacher-very chill and laid back. We never used the textbook, had less than 5 speeches overall, and barely any tests. SUCH a good teacher and made this class very fun. Take this class!

Professor Ryan made coming to an eight o'clock class enjoyable. His lectures were interesting and very informative, mainly because he used real life examples. I took his class for GWAR and would say his workload is medium. He was extremely organized and paced the class very well. I would HIGHLY recommend taking his class if you have the chance.

Ryan was probably the best choice I made my first semester of college. He doesn't talk to the class like he knows everything and makes himself relatable in every way and is never critical even when the whole class is thinking a how stupid a speech was. It helped that there was virtually no work. Show up, pass.

Ryan is just so good at teaching, seriously. He taught everything so well that I never even read the textbook, and I still understood what was going on! Passed the class with an A. Plus, he is such a chill dude. Take the time to talk to him after class, whether it be class-related or not. Highly recommend his class!

Mr. Ryan is an awesome professor and just a great guy in general. His teaching is more like him telling funny stories about his life instead of reading out of the book. If you have him, don't buy the book, I never opened it once. The speeches were scary at first but he's such a cool guy that you'll get over it. Fun group work too. Great class!

Best teacher at SFSU, helped me make the decision in changing my major and therefor my life, so motivational and enthusiastic! Every student needs to take his class, it will get you through the semester. I actually enjoyed showing up for a three hour night class!

If you need to take a GWAR class take this class! He realizes we have lives and allows the work we did in the class to go towards the final assignment. He is SUCH a great professor. I highly recommend him for any course, but as I said, for GWAR he's amazing.

I was not excited about this class originally because I hate public speaking, but John Ryan is so great it actually became my favorite class this semester. He makes lectures really interesting/funny, and he makes you feel really comfortable giving your speeches. No midterm/final, just easy quizzes & 4 speeches. Also lots of group work but it's fun!

I hated public speaking before this class. But he made me feel very comfortable presenting. I've heard good things about all the Comm 150 teachers here, but I think Ryan is the easiest and makes the experience the least stressful.

John Ryan, possibly my favorite professor. He is a great teacher and person. Very helpful. He also understands when you couldnt make it to class and allows you to make up the speeches. I hated doing speeches, but he made the easy by always giving great feedback once you finish the speech. I highly recommend him to everybody.

There's a reason john is one of the highest rated teachers! He's the best! Always there for you, super understanding, makes lectures bearable. Don't buy the book bc everything you need is through lecture and examples of your own life which makes everything easier to remember. Class was packed on first day of people trying to add. 5 stars!

John was such an amazing professor. He creates a really comfortable learning environment, where you end up speaking a lot in class with small group assignments. You have only 4 actual speeches, there were like 3 small quizzes. I don't think a single person got less than a B on anything we did. His lectures are fun, and I love him as a person.

Professor Ryan is one of my favorite professors at SFSU. He is so easy to talk to, answers any questions and makes you really prepared and on board with the material for quizzes and papers. Usually his final project is built up over a large chunk of the semester so no worries on crazy finals! Gives GREAT study guides and makes 8am classes a breeze!

Professor Ryan's Rhetoric class at USF is the greatest. If you qualify for RHET 130/131, take him! He lets you speak and write on whatever interests you, which is supposed to create good speeches and papers. I have learned a lot of speeches given in that class because each student is unique. He's not hard, so do what he asks. It's not a lot.

If you want a fun time in one of the most nerve-wracking classes, take him. He is so funny in his lectures which makes it easier to understand. There are a instances of group work but it is very harmless and usually in class.

John is truly an amazing professor, I DEFINITELY recommend taking one of his classes. Was nervous about taking Comm because of my fear of public speaking, but he creates an easy-going, welcoming atmosphere for all of his students. I always left class feeling inspired and cared for after his lectures. Definitely makes Comm an interesting subject!

I took him for a summer course at City College of San Francisco. He was extremely chill and promoted group work. For a speech class he was extremely understanding and let us take our time, no pressure. The classroom setting was great because for the speeches you generally choose the topic yourself so you end up learning a lot about those around you

Awesome professor! Mr. Ryan makes 8AM classes super bearable and entertaining. He incorporates a lot of humor into his lectures which makes them fun, but more importantly memorable. Super, super friendly and approachable and was really helpful during office hours. I would recommend him to anybody, COMM major or not.

I LOVED John Ryan. He was super chill and nice. He grades super easy on the speeches and as long as you try and follow his outline guidelines for each speech, it should be an easy A. Also, always go first for the speeches, he respects you a lot more if you do.

One of my favorite professors at state by far. If I could have taken professor Ryan for every single comm class I totally would have. With him there are literally no dumb questions or answer. He really cares about his students and he goes through great lengths to show that.

Def my favorite professor at USF. I was dreading public speaking, and it ended up being my favorite class here so far. highly recommend taking his class. I don't mind going to class and he's hilarious. 10/10 teacher!!

He is super chill and makes class fun and engaging. Which was super important since I took it at 8 am. Has normal amount of work and is pretty easy if you keep up with it. Not a lot of hw. Some papers throughout semester and 3 quizzes. Highly recommend.

Ryan is one of the best professors at sfsu. I took him for family comm at 8am and it turned out to be a class I looked forward to going. The midterm and final are really easy he gives you a study guide that's almost identical to the tests. There were a couple papers that were really easy as well just follow the guidelines and show up to class.

I loved having John Ryan as a professor. I had him for my COMM 240 class and I always loved coming even thought it was at 8 am. His energy that early in the day is amazing and he always tries to make the class laugh and relate to us. He doesn't lash out at students, and very minimal work required. I would highly recommend taking him for comm!

Professor Ryan is great! He is very kind to his students and is very helpful in answering any questions you have about the class. He is an effective teacher, explains the material very well. He records all the zoom classes so if you can't make it, you can watch it on your own time. Not too much work in this class, a pretty easy course.

John was really fun, relaxed and chill, kind to all the students. Was understanding of how difficult this online semester was, extended deadlines to help us. We didn't use the textbook at all, only learned material in lectures (he did post lecture recordings). Explained the topics clearly and was entertaining to listen to, made an 8am class fun.

I've taken three of John Ryan's classes, and each one of them is spectacular. He understands us as students, and when you ask for help he's there. His classes are shorter, so make an effort to show up. It's not mandatory, but trust me you don't want to miss it. Fantastic at what he does, Pr. Ryan always shows up to class happy. He's awesome.

I only chose "lecture heavy tag" because John likes to talk. That's what the lectures are though - like hearing a story from a friend yet somehow it's correlated to how to write good essays. He's super easy going, just do the work (which isn't that hard) and you'll get an easy A.

Really great Professor! He is very understanding and doesnt give out much homework. We had once a week short assignments, one project, and the final was short and easy. I also really like the material of this course and its very interesting!

John is the best. I was so nervous to take the GWAR but John made it fun! And easy! He gives lectures every class and usually had us do small group work. Not too many assignments. He broke up the big final paper into easier lil chunks, for credit, to better prepare us. Highly recommend. Super chill and sweet guy. Taking him again in the spring

I would 100% take another class with Professor Ryan. He is very understanding when it comes to assignments and due dates. His lectures just seemed like conversations that made everyone so engaged. This class did not require a textbook. We had two quizzes, a research project, and group assignments that were during class!

Professor Ryan is the best professor I've had the pleasure of knowing. Had him for COMM240 & he was amazing! He doesn't assign much homework, attendance is mandatory-ish. Group activities counted towards our attendance which weren't an every day thing & they were fun! He always knows how to make a room laugh and smile. Would take again.

Professor John Ryan has amazing lectures with some surprise attendance in class assignment that he collects. Sometimes he will do the sign in sheet however most of the time he does not take attendance. His lectures are fun to be in and he is not a tough grader on assignments. I'd say we had about 3 papers in total and 2 small presentations.

He was one of my favorite professors for sure. He really cares about every student and wants to make everyone comfortable. I took this class as a GE and it was very light work wise. You have to do a couple of speeches, but he is a very easy grader and as long as your speeches sound organized you will do good. He would take attendance sometimes.

Professor Ryan has a good way of explaining concepts by connecting them to real life stories, A few speeches which are assigned far in advance, along with many in class activities that are very helpful in forming ideas. Genuinely cares for students and wants to see them grow as public speakers, and as people.

This was my morning class and Professor Ryan is hilarious and his lectures are easy to understand. The work was really light and he let us out early like half the time. Go to class because you get points for a group worksheets everyday.

Lectures and class activities can be a bit repetitive, but the professor is really chill and understanding.
