this guy is hilarious! he's a very clear teacher and extremely patient if you don't understand. i highly recommend taking this class with him, even if it doesn't count towards your degree.
Dr. John is a very concise and thorough teacher. Exceptionally patient and good natured. Reading in class can be challenging but lectures will clear up any problems with assignments. Easy to find during office hours. Stays after class to help with problems, or just to talk. Very cool teacher and great for beginning and advanced philo students.
He is a really great teacher. Very passionate about what he does. There are not many homework assignments, only midterm and final. Takes attendance but does not count it into your grade or anything. There are "surprise" quizzes but they're generally very easy. Interesting class, makes you think.
AWESOME GUY!! Very down to Earth & extremely helpful! His quizzes can be a little rough but only if you haven't paid attention. He's hilarious & class discussions won't ever bore you. No HWnto speak of--just look over the material before you get there. A couple papers that aren't hard at all--they're mostly your opinion. Easy A, just pay attention.
He's the type of teacher thats really easy going and is willing to help and explain anything you don't understand. Basically the surprise quizes are in the notes you take the day before. He makes great examples that relate to the subject. I would definatley recommend him if you don't really understand Philo.
Tests are pretty much exclusively from notes. He gives study guides with questions that are on the tests and Engages class well. Funny in a darker sense. Willing to speak about material after class. Highly recomend for students of philosophy. Those that do not like philosophy will obviously find something to hate about the class though.
This was the 3rd class that I took with Dr. John, which should definitely say something about the way that he teaches. By far the best teacher that I have had at COD. He is always clear and elaborative in class and will take any amount of time to help. Logic was a hard but he made it easy to pass as long as there was moderate studying.
good teacher
John is a great teacher. Class is a little slow for philosophy majors, but he is super smart and funny.
Dr. John was an amazing teacher - his teaching style makes everything easy to understand and he makes logic enjoyable. Definitely take this teacher - you will be glad you did!
Excellent instructor, He's honestly enthusiastic and knowlegable about his field, and has a great sense of humor, his lectures are clear, original and helpful, (doesn't just read out of the book like some instructors.)Plus the required texts are cheap, I spent less than $20 on books for his philo 1100 class
Never take this teacher! Unless you want a bad grade for doing all the work. Then sure, take him. He is so opinionated. Even if you do the essays and work hard on it, he'll throw in his opinions. it's funny how people get A's in there other classes, then they work hard in this clas and they B's or C's.
Yeah. He's not a good teacher. I don't think its even worth doing extra credit. He isn't a good one. That's for sure!
yeaH....I hated this teacher...not worth your time. He gives people bad grades for ne reason. He has favorite. Not a good teacher! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Do not take this class on the internet. I don't know what he is like in person, but he comes off as a complete jerk in writing. He talks down to you when you ask him any kind of question. I had to do a medical withdrawal at the very end of this class so I'm not sure what my final grade would have been.
Wow....this is the worst teacher I had in my life! He is unfair and a HUGE jerk. He acts like you are dumb if you ask him to help you. Funny thing is, he doesn't even help! I sent him emails asking for help for my online class, and he didn't even respond! This wasn't just once, but plenty of times. I think he is horrible!
i didn't like his style. He was very unclear. I heard good things about him before hand so thats why I took him. But it turned out this class screwed me over!
If you email him he will say ask me in person so other student could gain knowleged from your question. He gets mad if you do not call him Doctor Santiago or Doctor John. The dude his conceited because he is a Doctor. Do not take him.
What a bad teacher! DO NOT TAKE HIM! unless you want to ruin your GPA....yeah...serisouly....i worked so hard...but still got a bad grade...ughhh....he doesn't deserve to teach! and he sure thinks he is something!
WOW!There are so many bad things about this teacher its insane. He is horrible don't take him. He is very very concieded. He thinks he is always right and the "dumb" student is wrong. He makes you buy textbooks that cost 60 dollars and i used only one of them.
DONT TAKE...HUGE MIKSTAKE! yeah no joke..i heard good things about him..but they ALL proved to be false : 0
Took his online class and got an easy A. As long as you put some time into your work and show him that you care about the class you'll be fine.
DONT TAKE!!!!! I am warning you!
If you want to fail the class then take him. The worst teacher I have ever had.
OMG this professors is the worst logic teacher every. he schould not be teaching it at all. i had to take this class again becasue i got a D in the class. im talking it again at a different school and im understanding everything. the book that he says to buy don't even bother to buy it becasue he does not even teach from it.
NOT a good teacher. DONT TAKE for your own good.
i am RETAKING THIS....why...because he made me loose interest...and....he cant teach...but its ok..instead of complaining here people...talk to his boss!
One thing is to work hard and put in your best effort and another is a teacher who does not respond to emails when you ask for help. It sucks how teachers can be like this. They make there students feel dumb and talk them down. I am hurt by the way he acted towards me.
Useless teacher. Does not help what so ever. Don't even bother doing the extra credit becaseue it is point less. All the work you do for the extra credit its not worth it.You will never bring up your grade. He should not be teaching any classes. One of the worst teacher I have ever took.
Useless teacher. Does not help what so ever. Don't even bother doing the extra credit becaseue it is point less. All the work you do for the extra credit its not worth it.You will never bring up your grade. He should not be teaching any classes. One of the worst teacher I have ever took.
TAKE PHILOSOPHY WITH THE OTHER TEACHERS...NOT HIM...AND HE CALLS HIMSELF A DR. OR PROFESSOR...HOW NUTS
not worth the trouble..take it with apostol!
I thought I deserved an "A" in his class, I really tryed hard and did the best I could on my papers and when I asked for help, he never relpied back. How unfair is that :(
eek! don't do the extra credit...i do not believe he even read mine...i bet this teacehr is going to get evaluations this semester!
smart solid teacher. must be ready to learn and study
Dr. S rules Go logic!!! Thats right A -> B
taken in honors section. Fair, clear understandable lectures, little homework optional, funny, smart, class is fun, helpful during office hours, text book expensive, would reccomend teacher but not class, boring
I liked Dr. Santiago. The other comments were very negative. I felt that he was entertaining to be in class with and really related the material to everyday life. That made it so much easier to understand. I really liked him as a professor and thought he was very interesting
DO NOT TAKE! AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! THIS IS A WARNING PEOPLE!!!!!!!!! TAKE IT W/APOSTOL OR SOMEONE ELSE BUT NOT HIM!
Interesting class lectures; quizzes and papers require you to think and apply what you are learning. Funny, interested in his students, always encouraging students to stop by for help if needed. Likes you to submit drafts, which is helpful.
Dr. Santiago is an excellent professor. He makes a subject such as philosophy ethics actually interesting. He loves to use real life examples within his lectures. There were two papers, mid-term and final test, which were a little challenging. Overall, I highly recommend him!
Sometimes the way he explains things can be a bit overwhelming. But a nice guy, expects a lot out of written work. Turn in a draft when you can because it can really help and always follow directions exactly - or get points taken off!
all you have to do is show your care and make it to all the classes. i didnt read one word of the books needed and got a B
weird class, got a "B" but wouldn't take again. Unclear directions are his specialty. He had a few pieces of wisdom that I liked but over all blah. By far the best part of this class was that I met my now boyfriend in it! so it wasn't a complete waste. lol good luck!
The class was challenging, but not terribly difficult. Be prepared to work your brain. All quizzes are pop quizzes, which means although attendance is not mandatory, it's highly recommended. Dr. S does not give our homework except for the required reading. Also, he loves to win at FreeCell. If he ever loses, be prepared to end class early that day.
I absolutely LOVE this professor. He always has something incredibly intelligent to say, making his lectures especially engaging. Make sure to read the chapter before the lecture, it helps you understand what he's saying a lot more. Overall, fantastic teacher, funny, and a hardass- but in the way that you know he wants you to succeed.
I enjoyed this class. It was challenging and he was very nice and helpful.
Explains all the readings in great detail after it has been assigned. Pop quizzes are frequent but only cover what was said in class the day B4. Two papers, Midterm, Final. Papers were harder than they looked but for the most part graded with alot of leeway. In office to help with clarity of assignments. Gotta pay attention in class to do well.
a challenging class,, but if you put in the effort you will get a good greade out. good lectures, good after class help, weekly small quiz to check understanding, 1 midterm, 1 final, and extra credit opportunities abound. Good teacher who knows his subject well, but you must have the book, and you have to do the homework. would recommend
For me this was a difficult class. The material is difficult but professor Santiago explains it very well. He grades by giving partial credit, a lot of quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. Hillarious, smart, cool guy. Would reccommend if you are willing to work hard.
Amazing professor. Witty as all get out, engaging, and challenging. Loved the class; if you need to ask questions be SURE to do it because he'll be more than happy to help you.
Awesome guy just hard stuff. Explains it pretty well though and will always help
He was a fun teacher. Made a lot of jokes and was pretty easy. A lot of pop quizzes but they were easy. Do the papers. Sometimes he doesn't even care for grading them and gives everyone an A. He knows what he is talking about but when it comes to asking questions be prepaired to know what you are talking about. Can sometimes be a arrogant.
I took this class in the summer and it made me put in too much time. The directions are not clear and he trys to freak you out. Not a positive person. Witty and sometimes fun.
he definitely knows what he's talking about, it's just that his grading method is weird. no one in our class got an A. i personally find him intimidating.
pretty unclear in his online classes
Santiago expects you to use your brain, something I enjoy doing. It could be considered a difficult class if you struggle to think outside the box or if you struggle to think on your own. He gives his students room to grow without coddling. If you want to be babied don't take his class. If you're mature & ready to be challenged then you'll love him
Great teacher, Material at first is pretty confusing. But attend classes on time due to daily quizzes and you should be fine. Read the book and practice as much as possible this will guarantee you an A. Also go for help he is very helpful. If you are taking this as a req. highly recommend him as the professor to take. Good Luck.
Dr. Santiago is an outstanding professor and a wonderful person! He challenges you to strive for excellence. He will inspire you through his words, experiences, demeanor, creativeness, and expectations. COD is lucky to have the intelligence and professionalism of Dr. Santiago. I highly recommend his critical thinking course!
i think he is the best professor i ever had. he made me want to come to class even when i was struggling. the material was hard but he makes the class fun and wanting to go to. he makes want to do better in the class and better in life. logic was a fun class
Dr.Santiago's class was really interesting, but it is definitely not an easy A. He is a VERY tough grader and expects a lot from his students, but he definitely wasn't horrible by any means. He's a cool guy with a great sense of humor, but don't take him if you want a blow off class, but if you are looking to learn a lot then he's the guy for you.
he expects you to know everything. he is very difficult. great sense of humor, but he is a hard grader and it is difficult getting an A in his class. i don't recommend taking him as a teacher.
Dr. Santiago is the most amazing teacher I have ever had. He takes so much time to help you out! I've taken two of his classes (critical thinking and logic) and if you work hard and seek him out for help, you'll do great. Hilarious, smart, and inspiring.
Dr.Santiago is a very laid back and entertaining teacher, though very serious when it comes to logic. He stresses on the importance on attendance and doing the work. Make sure you listen. It is very possible to get an A in his class if you listen to not only the material but to the life lessons he gives you. Great teacher. Highly recommend him!
Logic. This guy is hysterical. And he's a great prof, but he happens to teach hard courses. Really helpful, so make sure you ask questions. You won't be surprised by anything, except 'pop' quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but HIGHLY recommended. And here's a game: count how many times he says "um," or "uh." Lol, bet you won't get past 2.
Excellent teacher. Hard class, but you will learn a lot. Do not take if you aren't prepared for a challenge. Hes very helpful.
Very funny, cute, and nice. You better be prepared to pay attention, study, and work hard because it is a difficult course but totally worth taking!!
This teacher was fantastic. I learned quiet a bit to apply in my life. I would take a class with him again. Highly recommend this professor. Calm guy that is interesting to have a simple conversations with. If you choose PHILO Critical THinking 1125, there may be a field trip.
A tough, enjoyable, and methodical class. If you don't like to work do not step foot into his class. He explains EVERYTHING, all you have to do is then study. He is chill to, which helps students
I did not speak to him at all throughout the course, no questions, nothing. Your grade is based off of 14 quizzes, and YOU NEED TO READ!
Great professor, very involved with students. works hard to make the material easier to understand.
Seems to be a cool guy... Does not post grades until the end of the semester. So if you pass your midterm, it does not mean you will pass this class. He only takes points on certain assignments in class. Then you have a midterm and a final. You will have no idea of what your grade is until the end of the course. I asked him for help and got none
best professor i have ever had ever. left his critical thinking class every day feeling like i went to a self help class. this man is absolutely brilliant. i love him to death. the class itself is definitely challenging, but not impossible. i achieved an A by just listening to him and putting forth fair effort. overall very interesting class.
Worst teacher ever, and a hard grader. I usually get B or A in my electives classes, but this teacher is no help and don't take this class to boost up your GPA. I have to retake this class somewhere else now because doesn't have any other teachers who teach this class.
I am taking his online course but I think I will drop it for another professor. He is NOT helpful and his quizzes are once every week, ONE question is worth TEN points so you get one wrong and your grade already significantly drops. He is way too hard and his quizzes are just impossible.
Awesome teacher
Does not post grades... Only 2 Exams (Finalmidterm)..... If you ask him for help good chance you will get nothing... He talks about 10 year and really does not care about the student
I am in his online Ethics course. He is a very very harsh grader. I really do like him as a person as he is very nice, and I do think he means to be helpful. This class is definitely not a blow off class, you need to actually know what you are doing and read the book. Overall I liked him, but it is just way too much work.
Do not take this class online as you may struggle with the chapters and the questions on test are were tough and twisted, tests are not timed but each question worth 10 points even if you read the chapter, have to re- read it again and get some online help for better understanding have to write two papers 4-6 pages, will hurt GPA won't recommend.
Took online class. Extremely way too much busy work. Wish I would have switched instructors.
The teacher is terrible, he will talk down to you if you ask for clarification. The tests use material that is not in the book. He seems to pride him self on making this class impossible to get an 'A' in. Someone should let him know he works at a community college teaching an intro class, not University of Chicago in a masters program.
This teacher is a harsh grader. The reading quizzes do not follow the book well and they are incredibly hard to take, even if you read the chapter and make notes.
If you're looking for a blow off class, don't take him. If you're interested in philosophy or improving your critical thinking and quality of self, do take him. He is challenging, but he makes you push yourself. He was happy to look over all of my rough drafts and help me with understanding. I got an A for putting forth the effort. Brilliant guy.
Worst professor I have had so far. I am a 4.0 student and had to had to work harder in this class then I had to work in my Chemistry class. He is not understanding AT ALL and takes forever to get back to you. He is unrealistic in his expectations when he makes every question on the test worth 10 points. I would highly advise you not take his class
I found him to be a process and procedure guy, if you follow the process, and use critical thinking in your work, you'll get an A
Santiago is absolutely one of my favorite teachers of all time. hes a tough teacher but his classes are so worth it. i feel like a better person for taking his classes, critical thinking and logic. i would recommend these classes to everyone they are honestly the best choices I've made during my time at COD thus far. such a good teacher 10/10
logic is honestly the hardest class i've ever taken but im so glad i did it. it really makes you work and it puts you through a beating but by the end you feel like a new man. you NEED to pay attention and participate but honestly the class is awesome and i would highly recommend it to anyone if you are looking to push yourself and test your skills
It seems like the way to go with this professor is in person. This online course was not conducive to learning. The readings are long and uninteresting. The quizzes (80% of grade) are cryptically worded and there are no resources to help you understand the content. When you ask for help you get a 5 page response that leaves you even more confused.
Annoying and different teaching style. Explains how he teaches and how students should study and do homework. Doesn't put grades on blackboard. Bad at explaining things. Pop quizzes everyday. Weird and hard to understand how to get a good grade because you have to calculate your grade yourself. Hard to stay focused for 3 hour summer semester.
First day, he showed us average grades since 2012. Mostly c's and under. He told us that we needed to work and it was not an easy class. The grade is mostly based on pop quizzes which he'll give literally whenever he wants. If a phone goes off, if someone looks sleepy, more than once a day, anything. I get his method but I dropped the next day.
I took both logic and critical thinking from him. Both times he gave engaging assignments and also told some entertaining stories. His grading policy in logic is what you'd expect from that type of work (you get it right or you get it wrong), but he definitely held his students to high expectations when evaluating their papers in his CT course.
Took his logic class and it was a blast. He gives you most of the information in the lectures, so simply paying attention in class, you'll do well. The quizzes/tests are fairly standard, but like math: if you do the proper steps and show your work, you'll get some points even if you get the wrong answer. He's always willing to help if you struggle.
Logic is not the easiest of philosophy courses, however if you study you will do well. The homework is optional but it is recommended since it helps you learn the content. He does not post grades on blackboard, so it's hard to tell how you're doing.
I worked hard to get a B. Logic is a very difficult course to learn but he works hard to help his students. Gives pop quizzes if here hears a phone go off. Has an online book structure for the homework(which is relatively easy). Very good at rewording what he originally said to help students understand whats being taught. Practice the PROOFS.
One of the most amazing teachers COD has. Made such a huge impact in my life. He's unbelievably smart but funny & cool. If you are willing to work hard, he will always have time to help you. If you're expecting a blow-off class, I suggest you run (don't walk. RUN.) and drop this class immediately. It's hard. I was his only A the year I had him.
Incredible, funny, witty, wise, tough, difficult, rewarding. Dr Santiago is an excellent teacher and teaches logic very, very well. If you work hard and listen to him, you will do well not only in the course, but in other aspects in life. He is inspiring like that. Just work hard and push through the toughness of the course and you will be rewarded
Good teacher if he would make the grading clear, would've gotten an easy A for the class if he made us aware how he grades. 35% of the grade is pop quizzes that he throws out 6/10s for on subjects that take time to learn, 15% on homework he does not mention is due. 50% on midterm and final exam that you have to study a ton for. Would take again tho
He's a really awesome teacher, his ethics class REALLY made me think but in a good way. It's not hard if you just pay attention to his lectures, the online homework is easy. He's funny and loves participation, he makes the class fun and really talkative. Would take him again.
He's a really nice professor but this was honestly the most difficult class I've ever taken. He teaches well and is easy to contact for help outside of class but the content itself is really difficult. There are lots of pop quizzes which are a big part of your grade and few other assignments. He's definitely a tough grader, but he's fair.
This class was extremely hard for a online class.
Goes over and beyond to see you suceed
Easy to work with when having technical issues
Has a positive response always
I thought he was a very good professor. I did buy a physical copy of the textbook only to discover that we were required to purchase an online copy that had online assignments. We didn't take any exams. Our major grades were three long-ish papers we had to write. I would say the class was pretty easy so long as you engaged.
Had to to buy an $80 access code for this online class and the access code was used for an educational website that was absolutely terrible. This class was not well set up and the test counted for most of the grade. Will NEVER take him again and by far the WORST professor I've had.
Dr. Santiago is by far THE BEST professor that Ive had in my college career! He is passionate about what he teaches and challenges his students to reach their maximum potential. He is big on discipline, effort, and hard work. If you dont want to work hard, dont take his course. But if you want the most out of your college career, he delivers!
He was very strict. Forced his schedule onto mine with something due 6/7 days a week. When I emailed to asked questions he would not answer. Was snarky and told me to refer to the rubric provided even though I had already read it. This was an online class, mind you. I took the online because I was already class heavy. Stressed me out too much.
Great professor. Very easy A. Opportunity for extra credit; gives feedback on paper before due; opportunity to take each test twice; opportunity to fix each "assignment;" clear expectations. Would definitely take again!
this class was extremely difficult. I almost got an F. The homework was all online and was easy. The essays were super hard and got a D on almost all of them. No tests but pop quizzes on hard questions worth 10 points each.
A great teacher teaching a great subject. In addition, you get a lot of very useful life advice that you can apply to your everyday life.
For an individual that always did well in school, I found this class very difficult. Professor rarely made sense and ended most classes with a quiz. Most students were clueless and struggled to grasp the concepts that he so poorly overview. He never bothered to explain anything by always referring to the poorly made textbook.
If you want an easy grade and don't want to work, don't take him. I had him for Ethics, Logic, and Crit Thinking, and ik for a fact I could easily get A's while ditching class without him as a prof. However, he is extremely passionate, he is the professor that made me realize I wanted to be a phil major. He has had a profound impact on my life.
Worst class and worst professor Ive ever had at COD. It actually left a tarnish on my feelings about the school... it was that bad. His teaching material was inappropriate, almost the whole class was confused, and his personal demeanor was just rudeness disguised as passion. Half the time he just talked about racing cars. Choose with caution!
very passionate, cool guy, you will get along with him
Overall, this class was a pretty easy class. Homework was pretty straight forward and it was easy for me. I did this online. However, I'm not quite sure if I liked the professor very much. He seems a little arrogant regarding student's time outside of school. He was very syllabus heavy, and I felt like I could never approach him with a question.
I read very mixed reviews about him. I took him anyways and realized the bad reviews were students who don't want to work for their grades. He requires you to really understand the information not just memorize. Small quiz every week that requires you to use your BRAIN and a longer quiz from the chapter reading. Take good notes and you'll be fine!
Took his ethics class online and was scared at first after reading the review but he was very nice and polite. Made me aware of something I missed that was needed and did not penalize me for it.
The 5 star reviews for this teacher really makes me question if we are all talking about the same one. He's extremely rude and arrogant when answering emails and never answers the questions you ask. He instead tells you to read the syllabus even if you've read it, read it again as if something changed. Overall, not a nice guy&no care for students.
Professor Santiago brings an energy to the classroom that I've never seen from a professor before. You can tell through his lectures that he loves what he teaches. That being said, he tends to get off topic, and will give out several pop quizzes over the semester. His energy isn't for everyone, but if you prefer active professors, take Santiago.
Santiago was one of my favorite profs I've ever had. Very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Engage yourself and you should enjoy the class. Do the homework and quizzes on time and you should be fine.
the best teacher know to man!!!! class was very easy to understand. I was scared from the reviews it turns out that a lot of them are just mad that they got a bad grade. I will say If you don't work you won't pass. Couldn't stop talk about cars with him. Would take again and don't listen to the bad reviews.
Great professor online, probably even better in person. Mr. Santiago uses lots of humor and does not give out too much work. Has reasonable due dates and is easy to work with. Professor expects you to read textbook a lot but if you have good comprehension skills in reading, Mr. S. Should definitely be a professor to consider.
Very arrogant and unprofessional professor. His lectures made no sense as well as all of his homework, quizzes and exams. He talks a lot using unfamiliar words without explaining.
Professor Santiago has a strict teaching style, but engaging with it can be rewarding. Use unstuckstudy and the free textbook to supplement the class and manage the heavy workload.
Good overall
I took his ethics class, and within the first month, I couldn't see myself passing in the future. His lectures are very confusing, so be prepared to review them thoroughly. I had to relearn almost everything myself. He loves class participation but is condescending or seems to lose patience if you answer something wrong.
I took his intro to philosophy class. Get ready to read ur textbook, it explains it a lot better than he does. You don't use the textbook at all in that class. He has unit papers and makes you write a ton without using notes. Make sure to review thoroughly. He uses a lot of confusing words. make sure to ask a ton of questions.
BORING. He would make you go take test at the testing center.
Dude is honestly super chill, he can be a little tough with papers but to be honest you don't even really need to read the textbook. I made it by just fine without touching it once, hell I didn't even buy it. His lectures are supre engaging and he actually knows how to be funny during class, great guy, id totally recommend him.
