Very funny examples. He tests hard, but fair!
He is so mean! His tests are unfair! Avoid this teacher!!!
Tests were challenging but in the end you know your stuff! Well worth taking!
Nobody cares where you went to school or what you did for your degrees, man.
This man thinks that he is gods gift. The most arrogant, rude, and annoying person ever to walk the earth.

He knows his stuff in and out, but is not a good teacher, just cannot connect with the students, jumps from one topic to the next and leaves you clueless. Asked if there would be a study guide for one of the tests and got "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
He is a nice guy..but very confusing..likes to tell very corny jokes and his class is very boring. He jumps from topic to topic and is hard to follow.
Class was hardest class I've ever taken, lab was fun.... nice teacher but super hard tests
He's very good with his lecture, but gives no guidelines to his tests. Difficult to know what to study and most tests are center focused on one or two things - you just have to guess which one's they are. Syllabus doesn't help - jumps around.
Has a passion for the class. Not structured at first but he improved. JUST KNOW EVERYTHING and you'll pass. zoology has to be your life for one semester.
Pick powerpoint or overheads would ya! Zoo is hard and you have to spend all your time on it so if your taking anything else hard Don't take this class...spend all your time in lab...you'll need it.
Nice guy,****ty teacher! Very unorganized, spells and pronounces things wrong all the time. Crams an extreme amount of info into the class and everything is fair game for the test. Be prepared to study your ass off for useless info.
Pretty hard for a 101 class. Don't bother buying the book, you won't ever use it. Just memorize all of the notes for each test and you will be fine...seriously. 2nd test is the hardest, but I still got an A in the class.
Nice guy, will help you if you ask, jumps around a lot, you will have no idea what will be on the tests or exams so study hard! (don't worry, I still got an A-)
He doesnt help at all, hopefully you've had Chem and Physics before entering this class. Most of the stuff was over my head. Be sure to go to class I pulled off a C. Also go check out your old tests the final will have all the ?'s marked wrong on old
He is a great guy and lab was fun...but this isn't an easy class. He packs TONS of info into lectures and anything is fair game for tests. He gives you no review..and there is a killer fill in the blank section...be prepared to STUDY!!!
Is not willing to help if it means going out of his way. Watch out!
Great teacher! May be tough to get a good grade but you will learn a lot. The concepts of zoology are not hard but you must memorize lots of stuff. He has a story for every animal he talks about.
Nice guy, but bad instructor, too much information in too of a period of time. CMU needs to get with the program, every year they more and more information to the basic classes and expect students to be able to memorize it all
He is a nice guy, but very condisending to students, he should not be teaching.
Nice guy, but tough course and he is not very helpful. Too much information in one class, take it somewhere else and transfer it in, if you are not a bio major.
not very helpful, and he is full of himself
Stuck on himself
very offtrack, very confusing, you never know what to study. his notes are extremely bad.
Granted, this class is not easy, Schiede made it miserable. He is full of himself and puts himself on a pedestal. Very unapproachable. Try taking this class on Beaver Island over the summer and if you can't do that, just wait and take it with someone other than Schiede.
good teacher, had to work har but over all i liked him good stories nice man kinda hard to follow but if you work you will do good
He's a nice guy, and the class is difficult with all the information covered, but if taking time to study it's not that bad, and he's approachable if tried. Also he knows what he is talking about.
Don't take this class unless you need it for your major
Very, very funny man! Makes for a fun class. Learning Checks are kind of a pain, but the material is rather interesting. Definitely my favorite class so far! "DNA, to RNA, to Protein!"
If need to learn matl - pre-med, pre-dent, PA, etc. - he's AWESOME! KNOWS IT INSIDE OUT!!! If just want A's w/o studying, don't go into prof med career, as it gets ALOT harder than this!!! Take advantage of his knowledge! HE LOVES BIOLOGY (OBVIOUS)! Respect him as you'd want to be. He notices.
I thought his class was extremely easy. Very basic if your major is in this field. He posts all of his notes on Blackboard and only tests on those notes! Basically, if you study his notes and come to class you'll get a good grade. However, don't buy the book! You don't need it!
hes notes do not help what he wants is very unclear i no longer hold much of an intrest in the science field the class: not intresting ,understandable ,he never returns emails or answers to questions if you talking to him in person he's always behind not on top of things i suggest another professor
very easy teacher but only drawback is that he makes his tests up directly from the lectures meaning that if you skip class you will probably do poorly.
He may be easy for 101 but people--STAY AWAY FROM HIM for upper level classes. Nice guy in person, but an arrogant ass in the classroom. Questions on the exams will leave you scratching your head and no matter how you word your answer, you won't get full credit. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!
Good Luck!
I don't think Dr. Scheide is THAT bad, but he does throw a lot of material at you for the tests and doesn't give much help on what to study. Just tells you to look at your notes, but there's so much from the notes to know!
I took his ZO class on Beaver island... it was SO hard, but so worth it. he is very helpful if your a hard worker. funny guy, but do not take one of his classes if you do not intentd on studying your butt off!
I'm currently in his mon/wed 2 oclock class and I think that he THINKS hes funny when hes clearly not...he tells stupid jokes, that i do get, waits for his class to engulf him in laughter but only gets a few chuckles out of curtesy. Ive heard that there are worse proffessors out there so I'm really not complaining...just warning. Just sit in the back like me and bring a book to read and you'll be fine (you dont have to pay attention since his lectures are online).
Hes extremly passionate about science but has no idea about teaching, hes very unorganized, his lecutes jump all over the place and can get very confusing, if your just looking to get your lab out of the way for your Up find another teacher but if your into Biology and willing to devote your life to Zebra mussles... this is your man.
I agree that he doesn't have much flow to his lectures, he puts out a lot of information that jumps around and he doesn't help you prepare for what's on the tests. It's nice that he does powerpoint lecture and that he is very passionate about science, but overall, he's hard to learn from.
I took his class and I thought it was great. I did not opened my book once. He tests strictly from his notes which are very clear. Yes, it is a lot of information but hey, thats Biology! I really enjoyed his class. He always made the lectures go by really fast. Take his class for the required U.P. or if you are interested in Biology!
He would make a good parking lot attendant. Tries to tell you where to go, but you can never understand him.
Good class, obviously if you are going into medicine, you have to take this class. His lectures are pretty boring, but make sure you go to class, because at the end he does learning checks which count up to 5pts, if you miss too many the points start to add up. Exams are ok, but you have have have to study! Lots of material is covered...
He will tell you that his tests covers only lecture materials, but he is lying. He jumps around the book like crazy, and spends more time trying to be funny than teaching. He is arrogant and always talks about "well in my bio 547 class.." and "When I was in grad school.." Too much useless information and not enough stuf you need to know
This guy is useless. His lectures are so boring and he is so repetitive. He tests over stuff that he does not cover but expects you to read the whole book! He is so hard to follow and always talks about **** we don't care about. I was going to major in Biology but now I am not because he made me hate it. This guy sucks.
I had him on Beaver Island for Zoology, and i absolutely loved it. Its true he teaches a lot of material and expects a lot from his students but he is very fair and an overall great guy once you get to know him. If you have to take him keep an open mind and go to his office hours this will really help you out.
The man is just absolutely ridiculous. It's like he takes pleasure in taking points off for the tiniest little things. Do whatever you can to avoid taking Mam phys with this arrogant sun of a...
races through materials and over loads the course 100 times more than it should be.
I took BIO 101P with him and it was an easy A, so I figured, all these people on ratemyprofessor have to be wrong right? And I should take him for 392 right? WRONG! Easily the hardest class I've ever had to take at Central, and I'm in the honors college. Exams are ridiculous. He's ok for 101, but take 392 in the fall with the other teacher.
I absolutely loved bio before this class, took 5 bio classes w A, & then I took his class & switched majors!! I was lucky to get a C & I am a honors student too!!! I did all I could to study & went to talk to him about it. He blew me off saying if I really did all those things I would be fine!!! Stay away if at all possible! ps I graduated w 3.8!
His lectures suck. He gets off topic easily and regularly. I probably learned more about zebra muscles than I did about Biology in his class
for bio 101 he spent almost all of the year on cellular biology. his lectures are awful and his exams arent very easy either. id stay away from him if at all possible.
He's not as bad as people say its a pretty easy class. He's a really nice guy if you ever talk to him and hes more than willing to tell you how to do well in the class. If you can't do well in it good luck in 218.
Hmmmm, I'm not in the honors college like some of the other raters but I guess I should be because I am doing well in this class. You do have to study hard but that is what we are in college for right? Scheide is awesome! Scheide for president!! He has great lectures. He will tell you just what you need to study and will give feedback on tests.
If he tells you to take a look at a figure, memorize it. Study for quizzes as if it were the final exam. Very tough but you learn a lot. Go to office hours every week or make an appointment to go see him to go over anything that isn't clear.
I'm not going to lie, this class is challenging. However, he is a nice professor and helps you with any questions you may have. He is very convenient to get a hold of also. His tests are a little hard, but he curves his grades for all of them. A little hint...make sure you go to his office hours and look over all of your previous tests for the exam
power-points go online. tests are superrr hard. lab is fun, but not very informational, but this has to do with the lab instructor. in-class mini assignments are easy, and make you want to go to clas everyday to get points. requireded seminar attendings, experiences, and enrichments seemed like they would be a pain, but they weren't difficult..
Hardest Professor I've ever had
The best thing about this class is he curves immensely! I got six wrong on the last test and still scored 100%! It's not easy, though, and does take quite a bit of work. He has a sense of humor, though, and is a likeable guy.
pretty hard prof. he tries to be funny at times, and everyone just laughs cause he's not that funny. he's just a mello kind of guy.
This class requires much time and effort. It is very possible to to achieve an A. Scheide just makes it difficult. Got to every lecture! Print out the powerpoints before. Use the terms/topics worksheet. The lab is an easy A, 50% of your final grade. Exams are hard. He does curve. Biology Orientation easy points.
I think its funny how many bad comments he has...I have went to two other universities (U of M and MSU) and every science professor I had was harder than Dr. Scheide. He knows his stuff, and all you really have to do is pay attention and then go home and memorize the material- typical biology. He's big on ion potentials and membranes, though!
I hated this class. You have to go to class or you will miss points on the mini exercises he gives you. Exams are hard, so you have to study a lot. Lab is an easy A. But i would recommend getting a different teacher because my friends had someone else for this class because my friends took another proffesor and they didnt have as hard of a time.
He is pretty strange. I never went to him for help, but other students of his have told me that he is very hard to find and he doesn't make himself very available. Wasn't a big fan of the "Biology Orientation" assignments, but overall it was an OK class.
Ok class. He offers a lot of in class points to help when you tank exams. Read the book, and go to class. Tests are tough but like I said there are a lot of assignments to help your grade. Go to class, print the powerpoints, do all the extra work, and get a good lab grade. Lab can make or break in this class. Not bad but not really good either.
I thought that he was a very difficult teacher and didn't have any patience. This class was very hard and any much fun to sit through. He used words that were hard to understand and had really tough exams.
Good prof. He teaches you what you need to know for the exams. Make sure you memorize EVERYTHING. Exams are definitions, matching and essay. Especially memorize pathways. Quizzes every Friday unless an exam so you need to go to class on Fridays. Joking personality and always willing to help.
Shiede is okay. i recommend just printing off the slides before class and writing your notes on the side, because writing out the slides is a waste of time. Make sure you pay attention during lecture cuz there are in class quizes, but they're easy and help boost up your grade. Lab is an easy A, 50% of your grade, so thats good!
DO NOT TAKE! When someone said you need to memorize everything they were RIGHT! This class is impossible, I worked my butt off went to EVERY CLASS, every lab, studied, took every quiz and went to office hours and still got a "C" no matter how hard you try you will not get and "A".
unlike what others say, it is possible to get an A. i got one. get ready to study almost every day if you want one though. quiz every friday which are as hard as some tests. tons of material.
very very difficult class, if at all possible take with a different teacher.. exams are incredibly hard and he "expects" people to do poorly on exams... do not take this class
Constantly goes off on tangents. Attending class seems almost completely pointless because he babbles about this completely irrelavent to class. Show up to class for the iclicker points but other than that you pretty much teach yourself the material.
He is a very hard teacher! I thought he was very hard to pay attention to during the lecture. The exams are extremely hard, so be prepared to study, ALOT!!
Nice guy, good sense of humor, pretty down to earth, but the exams are EXTREMELY HARD!!! Be prepared to study wayyyyyy more than just the night before for his exams, i found that out the hard way.
Scheide is hard but a good professor. He explains things and you actually learn stuff. This class was interesting and he broke it down well enough. You just need to make sure you memorize your notes and do the homework...it's a life saver. He is a nice guy and I would recommend him.
Dr. Scheide is a good professor. He grades in a timely matter, and explains things really well. You are only tested off of what he teaches in class, so the book is only a supplement if you need it. BE WARNED...his exams are VERY HARD and require you to study your notes daily, which I did, and still only managed a B in the class. The lab is a joke.
Class test average was 49%. His tests are impossible even when you go to his class and take notes.
The test are EXTREME. Better be ready to dedicate your life or you will fail.
Good prof. Helped me alot
I couldn't stand this guy. I like biology but he made me hate it. Every class was just him babbling about his out dated power point which was impossible to follow. I took almost the same bio class before so I knew a lot of the material but I was so lost when he tried teaching it. Exams are hard and ridiculous. Find someone else if possible.
Dr. Scheide challenges you more than any other professor I have had. It is definitely not an easy class, but if you put forth maximum effort, you can find success. People don't like him because he is "hard," but he just wants to push his students farther than most professors, and I admire that about him.
Babbles on about who knows what. Avoide this proffesor by all means. Pretty much everything he lectures on has nothing to do with exams and even pushes his own made up words.
Goes on and on about his experiences. Power points are useless. You have to read 4 chapters after every lecture. Very time consuming.
He's very nice, but he's just not a good teacher. Uses iClickers daily for points, which FORCES you to go to class. Powerpoints and lectures are useless. Book is useless. I'm a biomed major and I will be retaking this for a better grade. RUN FAST!
Tough class, tough teacher, but he is fair. Study hard, learn a lot, and you should be fine. Crack the "Scheide" code on tests and it will help you with what to study.
Great, and funny guy but not a very effective teacher. Goes on about his experience's and tries to prove how much he knows. None of which pertains to the class
I was not much of a biology fan from high school, but I thought that would change with a good professor in college. I barely learned anything in this class. I wrote so many notes and even got a tutor. I was a 4.0 student in high school and somehow pulled off a B-, but that was luck. He reads right from the slide show and goes way too fast.
Scheide is a nice guy, but he is a horrible professor. I'm an all A student, and I know the material for his course, but his wording is just awful and makes questions confusing.
He is the worst biology professor ever! all tests and quizzes are hand written which would not be so bad if his questions made any sense. overall, he is just awful! take this class with someone else
MamPhys is HARD. This class is hard with every professor, Sheide included. His tests cover basically the entirety of his notes and his note are LONG. You will have study for this class and it will be hard. He will answer any specific questions you have but he gives only a few hints as to what will be on the test. Go to review with questions ready.
He teaches very fast and talks about useless things.
He is a horrible professor. he is not helpful at all. just talk about anything and everything during lecture. will talk about something then say you don't need to know this. exams are very hard, he dont tell you exactly what to study. do not take if you don't know anytime about biology. iclicker points are your only hope. hes too smart DO NOT TAKE
VERY hard. The way he words the questions in his tests and quizzes is extremely confusing. His lectures are also very confusing. His slides are unorganized. He gives you words and no explanation. He goes very fast paced and is only worried about finishing what he has to finish before the hour is up and not actually helping the students learn
This class was really easy, his test were clear and covered the material on his exam review and he always curved it. He wants you to read the chapters but I didn't and did just find. You need to go to class to get the participation point though.
Hands down worst professor i've ever had. The way he words questions on exams and quizzes doesn't make any sense. You should have a doctorate before you take his class.
This class is hard! You have to study the material everyday and actually understand it, not just memorize. But, Dr. Scheide is a great person! He really cares about his students and is very intelligent. A lot of people don't like him because they think he purposely makes the material hard, which he doesn't, he doesn't spoon feed the material.
This class is so easy, if you are failing this, then you should probably go back to high school. His notes cover what's going to be on the test and he curves. All you have to do is go to class and you get free participation points
Nice guy, bad intro professor. For an intro class, he is way too smart to being teaching it. It was the hardest intro class I've taken. His exams were extremely hard, and a lot of the info on them he didn't even teach in class, and couldn't be found in the textbook.
Hardest class I've taken here so far, avoid this professor if possible! Take BIO 110 with any other professor but him. The exams are very hard and the way he words the questions most of the time don't make any sense.
He comes across as a funny, nice teacher. Come the end of the class, you see who he really is. So anal about every little tiny detail, winks at students in an awkward, annoying, weird way. Very Sarcastic! Not very accommodating or helpful to his students. Never has time to meet outside of class and I would NOT Recommended taking this sarcastic prof
This is a hard class, but definitely not impossible. If you study, it is very easy to get an A. There are weekly quizzes that are very helpful for the exams. Exams are all handwritten, but every questions comes right out of his notes and powerpoints. I am not an all A student by any means, and I received an A.
He is super tough. Questions on the quizzes and exams are always trick questions, lectures are so hard I could never comprehend anything. And you read chapters upon chapters in the book each week. He made things way harder than they needed to be. Terrible.
Exams are easy, but the quizzes can have trick questions. You get a lot of participation points if you show up to lecture. He tends to go off topic or talk about stuff that you don't need to know but his study guides cover all of the exam. He assigns a lot of reading but you don't need to do it to pass the exams
Terribly vague exams
Professor is engaging and easy to learn under.
Dr. Scheide made coming to class at 9:00 in the morning amazing. He's a very funny professor He gives a lot of information and you need to show up to lecture! You will get participation points if you go to lecture to answer i-clicker questions. Lecture can be heavy, but it is all important info. Overall awesome experience!
Make sure you go to lecture or read the book if you want to pass because it's a lot of information. He gives a term list for every exam. If you know all of the terms on the list, you should do pretty well on his exams. He does i clicker questions as a form of attendance, so go to lecture or you'll lose points.
He is the worst professor I have taken at CMU .
Second to worst professor I have taken at CMU. Terribly hard grader with badly worded and difficult questions on quizzes and exams. Go to every lecture. Uses a powerpoint and (very messy) handwritten projector notes. Tries to be funny but you will dislike him so much his "jokes" make him even more irritating. Avoid at all costs.
I highly recommend another professor for this course. Scheide is a brilliant man, but lectures were all over the place. He would go off on tangents about things that had nothing to do with the chapters. His powerpoints were very lengthy and most of the information you didn't need to know. I was at an 89.99 and he wouldn't round my grade...
Dr. Scheide is not as bad as everyone is saying on here. Yes, he is a very difficult grader but if you put in the effort you will get a good grade in the class. Memorize the powerpoint and lecture notes and you shouldn't have an issue. He normalizes the final exam as a surprise at the end of the semester. Always willing to explain things to us.
Dr. Scheide is the worst professor I have ever had. He's class is hard and information heavy but he is not willing to help when you need it. He wasn't willing to meet with students in office hours and was extremely rude. He doesn't treat student with respect and his lectures revolve around his personal life instead of anything related to the class
Mandatory class if you want iClicker points. Lecture heavy, didn't learn the best from them - read the textbook for extra help. Curves the tests, which is nice. Dry humor... definitely someone to get used to. Go to his office hours to review your exams because the same questions are on the final.
Homework is confusing, tests are nothing talked about in the lecture. Rambles in the lecture.
Uses iclicker for attendance throughout lecture. Very big personality but is actually a pretty nice guy. Exams are not super hard but they can be lengthy so studying is recommend.
Good thing he's retiring in 2020 cuz he's the worst professor I've had in my 4 yrs at CMU. People dropped the class & are staying an extra semester past their graduation date cuz he's so terrible & they don't want him as their prof for this class. He rambles, you have to teach yourself, & he gives busy work that doesn't even relate to the class.
His grading and expectations are never really clear but he does "normalize" (curve) quizzes and exams pretty significantly so it's not impossible to get an A. You need to be willing to work but easily obtainable.
Dr. Scheide is a great guy, but not a great professor. I respect his high level of knowledge on the subject, but he is too smart for his own good. He struggles to realize that his students do not have the same understanding of the subject. His exams are VERY tough, minor topics often end up being portions on the exams. Also, quizzes every Friday!!!
Every lecture is Scheide reading from slides and explaining things poorly. If you can't stay awake during lectures, don't take him. You have to teach yourself almost everything. He tries and he's passionate, but he's not a good prof when it comes to lower level classes (I've heard he's better at the upper level classes).
I took BIO151 with prof Scheide, and it was one of the best classes Ive taken. His lectures are very detailed, and the exams are all based off of those. There are online quizzes which are very easy. There is a small written portion on the exams, but if you study they are really easy.
Read the book and recopy youe notes. He points out the important points and ask questions to clarify. Very flexible with exam times and understanding student lives. Go to class for iclicker and gets to retake bb quizzes. Pulls mostly definitions and less concepts. Makes some bad jokes but easy to look past. Multiple choice plus written exam.
Scheide seems like a decent guy, but I'm not a fan of this class. Even though I'm passionate about bio, these lectures are a drag and nearly put me to sleep. Also, the questions on his quizzes are very confusingly worded, which makes it difficult to pick the right answer.
He is a nice guy, but he reads from the slides the entire lecture. The slides are posted on bb as well. He doesn't give you any days to miss, so be prepared to lose i-clicker points if you are gone. He does curve the exams though.
Scheide's class is very lecture heavy and he really does not seem to put effort into making sure his students understand the material. Rather than teaching material, it seems like he just wants to flaunt his knowledge. Overall, he is a good person, but I would not recommend him, especially not to first-year students.
A lot of people will tell you not to take his classes. He is sort of fast and sometimes hard to follow. But I like that he is clear about what he is looking for, his lectures are very to the point and he is very forgiving with grading. He normalizes all of the scores and he usually drops more than he says he will. He can be scary but he's nice
Rambles in literally every lecture. Test questions usually from book materials, never the slides.
Personally, one of my favorite professors. He does tend to just read from the slides and rambles a lot, though. Very forgiving with grades.
Dr. Scheide can be a nice guy, but learning anything from his lectures is impossible. He expects you to understand the chapter before you come to class, and speaks so quickly you can't get the important info down. Then you still bomb the exams because you lose points over the smallest mistakes even when you know the material. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Not a fan. Uses two forms of lecturing during class: projector as well as the projectors with film paper. Both are up at the same time making it hard to get all the concepts down. The exams are intense, be prepared to spend hours studying and don't bother to cram. It simply will not be enough. Tried going to office hours for help, not worth my time
Overloads you with material. He puts an exam 3 days before the final too. This class influenced me to switch my major. Take this class if youre willing to study 2-3 hours of biology per night. I wish I had this app before I selected him as my professor
Must be determined to take this class. Is a very nice guy but has an abundance of material.
Awesome guy. May be hard sometimes but he cares about each individual and wants everybody to pass. Super nice and understanding. Would highly recommend.
Awesome professor, wish I could have him teach all my classes. Never a forgotten moment, always pushed me to my best.
Dr. Scheide is the worst professor I have ever had. This is my fourth biology course and I have done exceedingly well in all of them. For this class, if I didn't record the lectures, study for hours every day, read the textbook, memorize the slides, I wouldn't get any more than 50%. I actually did all of that and still failed his first exam.
Scheide isn't a good prof, plain and simple. I do admit that I learned Mam phys taking his class, but mainly through diving deeper into topics on my own time. Every question on exams needs to have every tiny detail the exact way he lectured through it. It's his way or the highway, he loves to brag about random hobbies/career stuff too, annoying!
Though difficult, he is very caring and is responsive to emails. During Covid, he'd send out a message almost daily to remind us on what to do. For exams, though hard, as long as you MEMORIZE the powerpoints and take good notes you are good. Definitely write down everything from the projector or take a pic. Lots of info and studying required.
Dr. Scheide is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I transferred to CMU and have had many biology classes before this. He won't respond to emails for a week, even when you email him again to remind him. The tests were difficult and his study guides were no help, just a 5 page list of terms. He is very narcissistic .
Professor Scheidi was so nice! I had him for Bio111 and he always responded to emails promptly and was understanding and considerate of any issues we had with the online format. This class was almost entirely prerecorded lecturing but he tried to make them entertaining and the exams reflected the lectures pretty well.
