Professor Schwendel is a really good pick for B252. He really enjoys what he teaches and comes up with good real-life applications of the concepts through stories. Econ isn't the easiest subject, but Prof Schwendel offers a lot of extra credit making an 'A' or 'B' very obtainable if you are willing to put in the work. 10/10 would recommend.
Prof. Schwendel is one of the nicest professors that I have had at IU. It seems that he really wants his students to succeed. Plenty of extra credit and opportunities to earn points. Clear on what he is looking for. Lectures can become dry and it is easy to get lost in his words but putting in minimal effort in outside class goes a long way.
The lectures are really long and informative, but he makes sure to incorporate the most entertaining information there can be when talking about Economics. He is very understanding and is available outside of the classroom if you need help. Exams aren't too bad, just make sure you attend class and gain those tophat points.
This guy scews you over with not curving grades. He provides extra credit in other areas, but not enough to get a good grade in this class. Although you probably won't get an A in his class, he is a good teacher. His assignments involve tophat, packback, and quizzes. Don't choose him if you want an A.
Schwendel is a pretty solid choice for B251. He gives a lot of extra credit which is nice but he doesn't curve tests which is pretty big. You have to pay for TopHat and PackBack which kinda sucks but all profs for this class make you do that. Attendance is mandatory and there are participation points so you have to stay the whole time.
Be prepared to have no idea what your grade in the class is, as it has to be calculated through a complex Excel sheet. He also refuses to curve exams, and the tests are tough. Generally this isn't a well-liked class, but he didn't do it any favors.
Very boring class and probably the more difficult professors out of econ teachers. Hard to follow or listen to but gives a good amount of extra credit. Wouldn't recommend.
John was a new professor this year. For his first year o thought he was a very solid choice for B251, he definitely cares for his students and makes sure extra credit is available!
Professor Schwendel is a great guy and professor. He makes his lectures interesting and engaging with TopHat questions. He uses examples that college students understand. Although his class is difficult if you pay attention and go to class it makes it easier!
Econ in general is a hard class. he doesn't curve the test but gives a lot of extra credit. pretty good teacher and tries to make class fun if you study you will get an A
Professor Schwendel is a great professor. His lectures are very engaging and he does his best to make them fun and interesting. He tries to get the students involved through various in-class activities. He also offers lots of extra credit and does his best for his students to understand the material.
Schwendel tries to make his lectures engaging, but they just become very tedious with all of the in-class TopHat questions. He offers a lot of extra credit in theory, but they usually come from the weekly quizzes and he only gives us one attempt. He is adamant on not curving his exams because he claims that a C- average is him doing his job well.
Unlike most of the other econ professors in the department, John Schwendel does not curve his exams at all. He says that its because he offers a large amount of extra credit he makes it more difficult that it should be to obtain all of that extra credit. He also makes it impossible to accurate calculate our final grade. Avoid him at all cost!
There are a lot of good qualities about Schwendel, but also a lot of negatives. His lectures are not dry and are pretty engaging. He offers a lot of extra credit. But his quizzes are quite difficult and sometimes have material that we didn't really go in-depth in class. He also never curves his exams which is a huge negative.
Do not take B251 with Professor Schwendel! He does not curve any of the exams like other professors do. And then tells you it will be okay because he gives some extra credit at the end. He also locks your grade on Canvas so you are not able to easily calculate grades you need on exams or the final.
The fact that the professor did not acknowledge that 95% of the students needed a curve to do well on his exams and his excuse was that a B- was a "good grade" and "normal" for this class. This professor would like to joke about our final grades and say that his extra credit was sufficient, but in reality it was not at all. Big talker but L teacher
He refuses to curve any of his exams because he says that he ends up giving a lot of extra credit. But in reality, that extra credit doesn't have as big of an impact as he thinks. He also thinks that if you get a B- in the class, he is doing his job well. Terrible mindset for a professor to have not wanting his students to succeed.
Impossible to see you true grade in the class because he locks grades throughout the entire semester. Gives you a excel sheet to compensate for that but it even says that it isn't fully accurate either. He also doesn't curve exams so get ready for a very poor exam grade if you don't grind for a whole week before the exam.
Schwendel is someone you should stay clear of when taking B251. He doesn't offer a curve for his exams and his lectures are dry and half of the time don't make sense. He offers extra credit, but it doesn't end up having as big of an impact on your grade as you think. You end up teaching yourself the entire semester.
The class itself is not horrible, but Professor Schwendel is the professor you should take this class with. If you are looking to get a good grade, you are not going to get it with him. He doesn't curve his exams and only gives you one attempt on the quizzes.
Grades a little hard but I think all B-251 profs do. Really engaging lecturer and a friendly guy. Emphasizes understanding the material over anything else. A great addition to the IU roster.
Professor gets it little harsh, because all the econ professors have different ways to boost grades. He doesn't curve, but gives a decent amount of extra credit. His grading scale is different, your grade gets automatically rounded to the next letter grade. Tests are a bit on the harder side. Overall he is a great professor and good at teaching.
everyone who gave him a low rating is clearly just not willing to put in some effort. yes, he is tough in the sense that he doesn't curve, but he is a fantastic professor who explains things very well. just because the subject is boring doesn't mean that he is. he is one of the most caring and intelligent professors I've ever had.
Professor Schwendel isn't the best choice for B251. His lectures are tedious with the amount of in class TopHat questions he makes people answer, and he doesn't curve his exams because he thinks a C- class average is good for him.
Schwendel knows his stuff, but his grading is what ruins this class. Not curving any of his exams and only giving one chance on the weekly quizzes while other professors give multiple will make you lose easy points.
Professor Schwendel is honestly a great guy, he was very helpful outside of class and this really helped me in the long run. I just wish there was more extra credit other than CL sessions, considering he doesn't curve tests. Regardless, I will take him for 252 if he teaches it.
He's great, however, if you have no knowledge in economics, you could find his class a little too fast. Coming from someone who already did economics in high school, the fact that he went through everything quickly was nicer.
Coming from someone who didn't take economics in high school, his class was very easy to follow and he has plenty of examples to teach the material. The only reason I'd recommend another professor is because he doesn't curve tests or give much extra credit.
Schwendel is fair for B2251. Lowkey not that good in lecture bc he goes soo fast but is helpful in office hours. Too much work and some of it is clearly busy work. Not horrible though and actually is really nice. Doesn't curve which kinda sucks but does offer extra credit. Prepare to do a lot of work but he's pretty good.
I loved his lectures and always felt like they were very interesting. My biggest problem is the tests often did not feel like the material we were learning. I would score great on practice exams and then I literally got a 57% on a midterm. He offers CL sessions which are extra credit GO TO THEM, they are very helpful.
I had no prior knowledge of econ. Therefore his classes was VERY hard. he goes super fast and gives little to no extra credit. He also rambles about nonsense during lecture. His tests are nothing like the material covered and does not curve and does not care even if you try hard and go to tutoring.
This is not a difficult professor. Although his tests may be harder than the other econ teachers, if you attend class 80% of the time he will add 4 points to your final grade. B251 is not a difficult course if you actually pay attention and take notes. There are practice tests which he provides as well as the weekly quizzes to study from.
Dr. Schwendel was an outstanding professor for B251. Many people complain that he does not give out as many "free" points as some of the other professors, but if you want to truly learn economics, he is the one to take. He is extremely knowledgeable about the topics in the class, and is always happy to answer questions. Put in the work, get the A.
Quality professor really. Very professional. Very articulate. Knows everything about what he is teaching. Always prepared. Takes time to clarify things if people ask questions. Only bad thing could be that the tests are difficult, but as long as you prepare, you will do well.
I don't understand why people don't like Schwendel, he's a good professor that teaches the conepts very easily. I had friends who had Graf and I would say Schwendel's exams are much easier than Graf's. However, he doesn't provide as much extra credit as Graf does if that's something you care about, but Schwendel does provide extra credit.
This was not my favorite class, but I did love Scwendels in class examples as they were easy to understand show he cared about us understanding the material. He does not curve though and if you can take a grad student I heard they grade everyone A's. But if you cant Scwendels is great back up.
Horrible. The best advice I will give is do not take this professor. Does not curve tests, the test averages are typically around 70% which he justifies as "good". Gives irrelevant examples regarding his former job as a glassblower and tractor driver. Gives irrelevant examples from past jobs. Take a Graf or a grad student and receive a good grade.
Actually loved the way he taught. Took him in the spring of last year and was one of my best teachers. Always super passionate in lectures if you listen to what he has to say. Great teacher
Schwendel gives great lectures with helpful in-class participation and uses fun stories to help teach topics. Class is easy to follow and he gives opportunities for extra credit. He is very accessible outside of class and is keen to help students if you make the effort to come in to office hours. Fantastic and so helpful. Would 100% take again.
Schwendel is 100% the best option for B251 at IU. He was a great teacher and really cares ab ppl learning.
Schwendel makes economics interesting and simplifies concepts to match the real world. However, the material he teaches isn't the easiest, and your grade is extremely test-dependent. Two midterms worth 22.5% each and a final worth 25%. He does give a lot of extra credit though so be sure to utilize it. Otherwise, he is a solid professor
Great guy. Early in his career. Gives a lot of Extra Credit, but you have to be proactive to take advantage of it. Take notes in lectures, read the tophat, take advantage of Extra Credit. This review is pre final exam, and because of my past exam scores and being proactive for extra credit opportunities I can get a 52% on it and finish with an A.
This class is hard even for people who took AP micro and macro in high school. He gets quite off topic during lectures, going on rants, etc. He is a really nice guy though. The lectures are not helpful to many at all. Study the Tophat and take notes on each complete module.
He was a good professor and his lectures were very helpful. Course had a decent workload with weekly quizzes.
Told me to "figure it out" when I went in for office hours. Otherwise his lectures are pretty boring however he does give a good amount of extra credit.
I would not recommend taking Schwendel for any economics class. His tests are nothing like the review material and his lectures are off topic and half the time, don't make any sense. He does have several extra credit opportunities, but even with that, it was difficult to keep a decent grade or let alone bring up a grade.
Prof Schwendel is a fantastic teacher, although the class material could be a little bit confusing sometime, but if you put in the work, come to class (sit in front), do the extra credit, CL sessions, and come to his office hour with questions, then you will do fine in his class.
He is an awful professor and his class is significantly harder than the other teachers. He doesn't teach with real-world examples and there is no curve.
Absolute d***hole, refuses to tell students what exactly will be on any exam so you are forced to read through the entire textbook because the entire textbook is "fair game". No exam reviews terrible practice tests where none of the questions are similar to the exam.
Professor Schwendel is a great lecturer. I loved the way he taught as he really knows his stuff. But boy was this class tough. You will have to apply yourself in order to get a good grade but he offers a generous amount of extra credit (roughly 5% overall) I warn prekelley students as this class can be a make or break. Overall tough but good.
He is a great professor! The class is tough but he makes it easier. Gives a lot of extra credit - take advantage of it! If you attend all lectures (and CL sessions), do well on the quizzes and put in the effort, you can do well. His office hours are also very helpful. His exams are not very difficult with very few tricky questions.
ECON-B 251 is a hard class. With Schwendel, you have to put in the work to do well. He sets up the class in hopes that everyone does well, with a fair amount of extra credit. GO TO ALL OF YOUR LECTURES AND PAY ATTENTION. Schwendel explains stuff well, but if you don't understand stuff from the get go, you'll regret it later. Go to his office hours!
Prof. Schwendel is a great professor. He's obviously very knowledgeable about econ, and provides many examples and practice questions within lectures. Lots of extra credit opportunities are available, and he gives extra credit just for attending lectures. The exams aren't easy, but there's no curveballs on them.
He's honestly a pretty great prof. You can tell that he is passionate about econ and cares for his students. He gives a good amount of extra credit opportunities. Would recommend attending his lectures as they as helpful AND count for extra credit. Recordings were helpful to look back on. Overall a great prof but his exams are a little tough.
Very passionate about economics and greatly enjoys teaching which made the class less boring in my opinion. The lectures are long but he also records them. There is a good amount of extra credit available if you take the time to do it. I had a very hard time with the tests though even after going to every class and studying a lot.
Great professor who's passionate about the subject and is very willing to help students out. Plenty of extra credit opportunities.
He is very passionate about econ and tries to make boring content seem fun. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and offers multiple opportunities for extra credit. With that said, the exams are fairly difficult and you really need to pay attention in order to do well on them.
ECON is a tough subject but he tries to make it better for students in his class. There are a few extra credit opportunities. Definitely take them up as it helped boost my grade and go into office hours if you are struggling as he is always willing to help. His tests are very tough though so definitely study ALOTTT!
Not a very hard class. Lectures are very boring but help reinforce concepts. Gives lots of extra credit, so it should be easy to do well in this class.
very interesting man. spends the majority of the lecture yapping about glass blowing or the state of Wisconsin. never actually answers your questions. says the word "intuition" approximately 30 times an hour. attendance is extra credit and he posts all the lecture videos so I just put them on 1.5x speed and did the entire course from my room.
Amazing professor but gets annoying. He yaps about glass-blowing and super obscure subjects for 60/75 minutes. You HAVE to pay attention otherwise you will get confused quickly. Attendance is optional, but definitely do all the extra credit and you will thank yourself. An easy class if you actually spend time studying.
Professor Schwendel was a phenomenal professor. His lectures were extremely helpful and he was sure to give out some extra credit at the end of the semester. He is one of, if not, the best B251 professor at IU.
Schwendel's passion for teaching economics definitely comes through in his lectures. He explains concepts in depth, using real life examples to help explain why they are relevant. The class is structured so that 70% of your grade is made up of exams, but he does offer a generous amount of extra credit (~7%). Overall, I would recommend him for B251.
Everyone always talks about how Graff gives more extra credit when in reality Schwendel give the same or more. Attendance and econ discussions are extra credit. If you do anything attend the discussion. Great job at explaining the concepts and the whole class is easy if you just listen. To study for the test use the practice exams and the quizzes.
Professor Schwendel is one of the best profs I have ever had. I had to take B251 over a 6 week summer course to get some credits and he made it a breeze. He explains everything thoroughly, multiple times and gives practice problems and examples. Participation was for extra credit. Expect a quiz on non exam weeks, and tophats. 10/10 recommend.
John is a very good professor. The course material can be very challenging as the semester progresses, but he does a very good job at highlighting key concepts and explaining the chapter content. If you want to succeed in B251, you need to go to his lectures. Overall a very good professor for one of Kelley's most challenging 1st year classes.
can't teach well and gets off-topic. loves talking about Wisconsin and the bucks (nba team).
One of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are so engaging, and he teaches very well.
Professor Schwendel is one of the best lecturers I have had at IU, and he explains topics and ideas really well. Super caring and approachable, gives 7% extra credit (going to class is extra credit) and he is super clear on guidelines and topics on exams and quizzes. He even acknowledges when there are errors, and doesn't penalize students for it.
Loved this teacher. Not the best at explaining math so its so important to go the the CL sessions, just do it. extra credit is great, go to class and pay attention, For exams, go by module, First read the Tophat chapter, then redo the CL questions, then retake the quiz. This class is not hard unless you make it out to be.
Amazing professor, you can tell he cares from his stories that relate to what you're learning next, to the amount of extra credit he provides. (It's like 10%) He has a lot of energy and is willing to sit down and talk things out with you especially during office hours. I've spoken to many others who've also had him and they loved him.
Great lecturer, they were entertaining, attendance was extra credit but tests are tough. Make sure to pay attention in class
ECON 309 was a very good class. I learn't a lot about Inequalities in Economics. He challenges you to critique and beware of data. It is also more subjective than most Econ classes. You will write 3 in class essays (he gives you the topic ahead of time) and take two tests of which he preps you. You do not need to know much Econ to do well. Justread
Can't explain the material very well and gets off-topic. He would talk about Wisconsin, glass blowing, or telling students to be quiet.
Lecture is kinda boring. Lots of extra credit (6%). Study for tests and do homework and you'll do well.
exams are tough, but if you prepare with the extra material he provides you'll be fine. overhated.
Prof. was great. He gives so much extra credit it is insane. He is also really easy to talk with during office hours and I would recommend just going and meeting him it makes the class more enjoyable. His class does have super long lectures, but that is just econ in general and he at least has some fun stories that add to understanding the content
The course was okay, the professor just kind of talked alot of class and I found it hard to find what information was actually important. The exams were unneccesarily difficult. Offers a lot of extra credit and recommend CL sessions, but because this course is required I would take it with a different professor if you can.
I don't like economics but he made economics interesting. He really cares about student success and it shows through his teaching. 10/10 professor.
The class is very hard but he does a very good job explaining things and is very approachable. There is plenty of extra credit as long as you care enough to do it.
Professor Schwendel isn't a good professor plain and simple. He goes off topic every single lecture and is typically telling students to stop talking. The lectures felt very pointless, as I never really gained anything when I attended. The exams are unreasonably difficult and are very tricky. All I have to say is GOOD LUCK.....
I like Schwendy! He's a good guy and seems like he loves economics... he wants us to do well which is also nice. There is so much extra credit so your grade will be fine. He answers alot of questions which is nice and is always open for help. Take him for econ :)
I would take Schwendel over the other econ professors, he gives a good amount of extra credit and his exams can be challenging but are fair. He is a good lecturer but sometimes can ramble or go off topic. However, I think his slides are super helpful and there is so much practice to help for the 3 exams!
Take him for B251. He offers a ton of extra credit for showing up to class. His exams are very fair, and he gives practice tests that are nearly identical to the real thing. He makes up his own examples that can be confusing at times, but if you take his advice and make your own examples you will do well. He'll stop lectures to answer questions.
Tests are hard, lectures don't help at all, final is cumulative.
John's a good professor and it's clear that he has a real passion for economics, it's just the fact that the tests are impossibly hard and they're worth around 75%, so study hard. Really hard. He does gives a very good amount of extra credit (5-6%) though, so make sure to capitalize on those, because you'll need it.
So difficult and annoying for no reason, couldn't adjust for 1 point, made me not get into kelly by 0.1% because he was being stubborn. even when I showed proof for my claim. absolutely useless
Genuinely a really good and caring professor. He offers a ton of extra credit, and he is good at explaining concepts through stories. The exams are not hard if you study with the practice tests, weekly quizzes, and CL questions. Make sure you go to class, not only for the EC but also because it's easy to fall behind.
Really good prof. For Econ I don't think you can get a better prof. It's a hard subject and depends on you. Papers are similar to what he says and quizzes he gives throughout the course. So much extra credit, I did well on first two exams and went into the final with a 110 percent or something.
Professor Schwendel was a great lecturer and storyteller. He cares about his students and wants you to do well. The class is dense, and the exams aren't gimme's. I took both AP Micro/Macro in high school, so I found the class easy, but I still studied for tests and attended every class. He makes sure everyone is on the same playing field. Recommend
Lectures can get long and it becomes easy to zone out. Don't sit in the back if you want to succeed in this class. Average exam scores were in the 60s. Plenty of assignments and lots of opportunity for extra credit. If you fall behind once, you'll be behind for the rest of the class.
Prof Schwendel sets you up for success, but I would highly encourage students to take advantage of the extra credit opportunities and study well for exams. He was my favorite professor from freshman year because he was really good at explaining difficult concepts and was always willing to help students.
Makes the lectures as interesting as they can get through a storytelling kind of method. Very nice guy, has a lot of extra credit opportunities in lieu of any exceptions with missing work and all that.
Schwendel is a great professor and makes difficult topics more understandable through his lectures. Make sure to come to class. The textbook isn't very good, but do the readings to get a baseline before class, where he explains and expands on each topic. Is very engaging and clearly cares about his students doing well in the class.
Professor Schwendel is a sweet guy who seems to really care about his students! He provides lots of examples and metaphors that are really helpful for understanding concepts. He also gives so many opportunities for extra credit - your grade can be raised by up to 6% at the end of the semester. I would for sure recommend him for econ!!!
Really great teacher to have. Class is long and can be very easy to zone out, but if you pay attention, you will do good. Lots of extra credit, so just show up and get it done. Tests are the majority of the grade, so study hard and lock in for them and do review, since it is very similar. Class is challenging but fair if you put the work in.
Really boring lectures and class grades are structured terribly.
It's definitely easy to zone out during his lectures, but paying attention will help more than anything else. Also, the CL sessions are easy extra credit, and more practice is always helpful. The tests are kinda brutal, but totally manageable if you study, you need to study. Also, don't underestimate the Q&As those are graded 0 or 100. Great prof.
Schwendel is one of the best teachers I've had. Tests aren't too hard, just expect questions covering everything you have learned in the unit, do well on the practice tests, and you will do well on the exams. My favorite thing about Schwendel is that he actually cares about his students and wants them to learn and take something from his course.
Good teacher pay attention
Econ was a challenging class, but Schwendel made every topic so easy to understand- super entertaining & helpful. He really cares about his students and his lectures are so well organized to teach every type of learner. Pay attention, stay up to date with assignments/readings, and take advantage of all the extra credit offered and you'll do fine.
Genuinely have never had a good conversation with the guy, hes incredibly sassy and thinks he knows everything. hes a decent lecturer, but genuinely impossible to talk to or get help from without getting a condescending or snarky reply. Overall I wouldn't recommend him at all, he overcomplicates everything and generally isn't a nice guy.
He was a great professor and helped understand with many examples given in class.
Real smug guy, kinda weird to talk to acts like he's better than others, kind of professor that's actively looking for ways to take points off in exams. Content was somewhat interesting but too broad, class wasn't necessarily hard but he would grade weird? Regret taking
ALOT of extra credit. Uses a lot of storytelling to teach concepts- can easily zone out if that isn't your learning style but his tests are fair and clear. He teaches well enough to understand the content. If you ask questions in the class, he is more than happy to answer them. 2 hours for final exam(other professors usually have given less)
Schwendel's a fun econ professor. He's funny, tells stories, and brings random ah brainrot into his lectures for no reason. Honestly, show up to class + the CL sessions, do all the extra credit, and study for tests not the night before, and you'll get an A.
Great professor! Super approachable, I highly recommend going to office hours. I did bad first midterm, went to offie hours before final and second midterm and did so much better on thos two. Go to all extra credit CL session and get the attendance points and you will be okay.
