He's a really good prof! Very organized and is very helpful in helping you to understand. He's interesting too though. Definitly one of my favourite professors
Awesome Prof!I was really fortunate to have him come to Mexico with us. Really understanding and helpful and really clear with what he wants
He's extremely helpful and very nice. You learn a lot from him.
He is a great prof, AND hes pretty hot!...we need more eye candy in the prof department!
Great teacher!
He is a really good teacher. He's fair, understanding and really knows what he's doing.
He is an amazing professor! A great lecturer and very helpful if you don't fully comprehend. He has the unfortunate habit of picking favourites during class but is a fair marker. Come to the dark side - teach more English!
Excellent prof. And he's incredibly cute and funny. His teaching methods are very clear, and he always relates things to the real world so as to make them easier to understand. He actually cares and is very helpful! Go to his office hours early though, there is often a line up! But make sure to attend class and study. Tests are a bit challenging.
Fantastic teacher! Had such a great time in his class, he clearly loves what he does. Clear, fair, and always willing to help out and give clarification on points one doesn't quite understand. Looking forward to taking some of his classes in the future.
And LL323 (although, LL223 is WAY better). Soo interesting! The fact that we had to do text questions (not hard... more like learning syntax trees) made learning concept for tests easy (if you did it, you already know how to for the exam). The exam was a lot of the same as assignments. Enjoyed it a lot.
Really down to earth and crazy intelligent! By far one of the best profs in the department! He's really invested in his students and his research, and you can tell he loves what he does and works extremely hard! Plus he's adorable!
Dr. Schwieter is hardworking and engaging, dedicated to the success of his students, and a really good person. The University is lucky to have him! Take all of his courses!!!
Make sure to go to his classes! Takes attendance always and really wants you to show up! Also, be aware that professors see if you read and look at the slides and readings online on Mylearningspace!
I had him 3 straight semesters (SP200 - now SP288, then SP201, then SP202). Is amazing on the SP200/288 trip. For 201 & 202 He was a good professor who presents material clearly though is a tough marker. Attendance and participation are key. If he sees that you are making an effort he will definitely help you out. If not, it will be a tough class.
Dr. Schweiter is AMAZING!!!! He makes lectures so much fun and even though its almsot two hours long it feels like 15 minutes. The content is a little hard to grasp sometimes but if you do the recommended homework for extra practice you should be good. He is very dedicated to th subject and he is just a joy to be around!!!
Man is probably one of the greatest professors you'll ever get. Really nice and polite, never condescending when you ask a question, very clear slides and lectures, and always willing to help you out. Made me love linguistics. Just do the textbook problems and a review a lot, his exams are much harder than you initially think.
Dr. Schwieter is great! Lectures are super engaging, a little challenging at times but definitely interesting. Hes very reasonable with grading and not much more work than normal (compared to BBA courses for example). Do the homework, dont ask dumb questions - he can be sassy - and show up. Lastly, hes a Scorpio so... take that as you will.
Alright so, he's a pretty nice guy but his lectures are pointless. all the things on the exams have nothing to do with the info on the lectures. honestly your better off just reading the textbooks and going to the exams
Loved being in Schwieter's Lectures. Make sure to attend tutorials to better learn vocabulary and practise your pronunciation. He replies pretty quickly to emails and is super easy to talk to. (Fall 2020 zoom)
My 2nd time having Schwieter, honestly he's one of the most interesting profs. Class does require a textbook; his slides are pretty informational and you don't necessarily need to read the chapters. The group assignments are fairly easy if your group communicates who will answer what questions, questions are in the textbook. (Fall 2021 zoom)
Amazing teacher, super informative and has great lecture slides. Would recommend reading the textbook as his assessments use a decent amount from there and they can be pretty difficult. Very easy class in regards to assessments as it is only the midterms and final that you have to worry about doing, no other assignments.
-only has 2 midterms/1exam based on the textbook
He frequently made mistakes during class, fixing his powerpoint during class and wasting our time. This would be fine if this was a rare occurrence but this happened nearly every week. He couldn't even read his own slides right. Even in his own published textbook he made mistakes in syntax and morphology (not sure how it was even published).
does not follow the promise
Grading rubrics of assignments are unreasonable. The professor did not provide any reference and feedback for grading, and I did not even know which problem I made mistakes at the end of semester...
His teaching deserves it.
The professor's lecture content had little relevant to the exam, and did not provide any feedback for questions that students lost points.
Don't choose his course
Dr.Schwieter is pretty nice.
Terrible professor and unprofessional. Said to contact the TAs instead of him even though the TAs would not respond. Also did not care if multiple questions on the midterm and exam were incorrect. He claimed he adjusted the points accordingly but refused to show us the correct answers. How are we supposed to learn then?
He was a decent human being, but his lectures were beyond boring and not engaging at all. The tests had nothing to do with the information that was learned in the class, and he is very difficult to get into contact after class is finished.
SP220 Dr. Schwieter is not very engaging, as his lecture slides are very very information hefty, not in order which makes it awfully hard to follow and grasp what it is he is trying to get across in lectures. He does not care for the success of his Students on his difficult tests which he does not answer any questions you may have about it :(
Nice guy but his lectures were difficult to understand and the textbook questions were confusing
Dr. Schwieter seems like a nice enough guy but there were issues. the course is based on three tests and 4 Zaps quizzes. His tests were quite hard and often used odd wording which was frustrating. he sped through lectures so fast and his slides were usually just paragraphs from the textbook. we missed several classes so I felt very underprepared.
This is for his 1A03 linguistics class at McMaster, (couldn't find the option) he fails to explain his lectures properly and is very entitled. He admits that the textbook he wrote is full of errors, when the class is based on the textbook itself. He forced the in-person class to become virtual and has no tutorials to learn as a group.
This is for LING1A03 at Mac. The lectures are just copied and pasted from the textbook with little to no clarification and further explanation. There is no way to test if you understand the material especially since this is a new subject, opposed to first year calculus. He is unclear and inaccessible outside of lecture. Do not take his courses.
This is for the 1A03 course @ McMaster. The content seems very interesting and fun. However, this prof makes it near impossible to fully learn to a level of confidence. The resources to recieve help is very hard to receive and the lectures are all just passages from the textbook that are copy and pasted and then read out loud. Would not recommend.
taking ling1a03 with him at mac - it has been a terrible experience so far. the one hour weekly lectures are not clear, the textbook isn't v helpful and no other resouces (eg- tutorials) have been provided. the office hours are by appointment apparently, but like another student said here- he is inaccessible outside class. 10/10 would not recommend
Taking Ling1A03 at Mac Be prepared to completely learn everything by yourself.Lectures are completely useless and you HAVE to buy the textbook or you wont be able to do anything. The homework is almost impossible because nothing was explained prior, you basically have to figure everything out for yourself. The tests are 50 minutes and 50 questions.
I took this as an elective because I had interest in the area. Attendance was mandatory for participation marks. There were so many tests and he wrote the textbook so it was mandatory to bring to class and not accessible through the bookstore. I found the lectures boring and he let 2 particular students talk for too long sharing personal stories.
Very nice man, but does not seem to know Spanish and struggles to answer his own homework questions. Prioritizes grammar over actually learning to speak.
Learned very little in his class, if you have the option to take a class with a professor that speaks Spanish as a native language or at a native level, I would recommend that instead. Many of the concepts and vocabulary taught in this class were very specific to certain countries and other vocabulary was often not accepted, so be careful.
Professor Schwieter is so kind and amazing. He is passionate and prepared for each lecture, so thankful to God we have him! :D
Teaches 10% of the material on the midterms, rest is up to you to learn on your own by reading the textbook. If you want to do well in this class, you might as well not go to the lectures and self-teach all the content.
Exams are super hard and not relevant to what is taught in lectures
He is a nice prof; explains concepts well, confident speaker, and cracks jokes in his lectures. Lecture slides are usually word-heavy but informative. Does not live-stream lessons on Zoom. Exams are pretty tough and wordy. He is so very sweet tho!!
Didn't enjoy classes at all, usually cancels it or do it through the zoom. Grading is simple, but you there is no additional sources to pump it. That was ok, but I was expecting something more. P.S. Wouldn't take his courses again
He is a really nice and sweet prof but his exams were crazy. This course was insanely content heavy BUT only 3 online midterms 50 questions 50 minutes. He also has no classes on exam weeks which is really nice of him to give a study day.
The lectures weren't very interesting, and nothing from the lectures was on the mid-terms. I haven't taken the final yet but I am assuming it will be the same. He cancels class a lot and it's always so last minute. Don't hate him, but I didn't learn anything I needed to know for exams. The mid-terms are online, final is in person.
He is a very nice person but he doesn't actually teach much, his lectures are pretty much just him reading the slides to you. He cancels class all the time leaving students with the responsibility to teach the course work to themselves. He also makes his TA do the lectures sometimes which doesn't help students learn either.
He is a very nice person but he said the textbook was not required but would be helpful to read and then proceeded to create all the tests based only on the textbook. If you did not read it then you were screwed. Also he only grades by a PREP component, two midterms and an exam, making exam season more stressful
He has excellent lectures. He does a great job at explaining concepts and providing multiple examples of them. The exams are extremely fair, albeit a little wordy. You just have to read through the questions and answers carefully. I enjoyed taking this course, and have also taken and recommend his PS101 and LL223.
Professor not the best in terms of support. Does not provide any details about final exam and minimal about midterm in terms of content or what to study. Midterm was fair however the final exam was very misleading. Class had slides for lecture notes and professor said textbook was not mandatory, however final was hard and 90% textbook info....
Take online if possible. Syllabus and expectations are very clearly laid out, and feedback on your homework and tests is met with very clear explanations if asked. I felt it was very good, and he was a good professor for this class.
This class was not bad as it didn't require a lot of attention since it was based only on 2 midterms and final exam. The final exam was 100 minutes 100 questions, so regardless of how well you did on the 2 midterms (online) you weren't gonna do well on the final, the questions were from textbook very long and very hard.
One of the kindest most genuine profs I've ever had, grade is determined by three tests but they're very fair and you can easily do well if you study beforehand
I attended three lectures throughout the entire semester. His lectures are completely pointless. I read the textbook and did very well on the exam. I did not even use his slides to study. Very boring, but it's an easy grade. I just found the way he taught to be so boring. I had two online midterms and one exam worth 40% (plus prep credits).
The professor is a very good person, but I did not enjoy his teaching style. Your marks are based on two midterms, each worth 30%, and a 40% final term, with no opportunity to earn bonus marks.
Just wrote my cognitive Neuroscience midterm. I studied for two weeks straight. Thought I knew the material like the back of my hand and achieved a 20%. None of what he teaches in lectures are on his tests. It is practically useless to show up to his class because you will probably fail either way. Doesn't reply to emails.
Just took the first term test of the semester and the whole class failed because everything he teaches is not on the test. There is not point in going to class as it's a waste of time, tests are made off a test bank from the textbook so be prepared to read. He was quite rude when responding to email about the test so wouldn't recommend prof!
With our recent midterm, I studied so much and dedicated a significant amount of time to this class. The midterm was extremely hard, one of the hardest tests I have ever taken, and none of the material we learned was actually on the midterm. I literally guessed 99% of all questions, even though I knew all the material very well.
Grade is based off of 4 tests that you will most likely fail (as he has proudly recognized). You will not be able to understand his questions unless you are Shakespeare himself. Can't take constructive feedback, very dismissive and passive aggressive. Don't take this class unless you want to feel absolutely defeated the whole semester.
Tests are close to impossible to pass. I guessed the whole thing. According to his system it should only take 36 min to write, I took the whole hour and a half (as did majority) left questions unanswered. I also heard he doesn't even give those with accessibility their extra time, considering I didn't even finish in time this is crazy.
Waste of time and money. Openly admitted his lectures are useless and doesn't even make the questions himself. Your grade is depended on 4 tests, and after receiving the first test, the entire class is failing. Even after studying hard for this test i had to guess every single answer as nothing we learned was even on it.
If you heard this class and teacher were good… neither is. Everyone cheated in years before, due to the high average he believes his way of testing continues to be ethical. Trust me his tests are the furthest thing from that. Don't take this class. Took longer to read questions than answer them.
As you can see, there are many other reviews that are along the lines of the same thing which I have to agree. The tests are nothing having to do with what he teaches in class having to do with lecture slides. So just a heads up to anyone thinking about taking this class!
Worked so hard for this midterm and achieved a 25%. Overly complex questions, irrelevant lecture/ prep material, and seems to not care about students. Majority of the class failed. Attempts for help or clarification after were met with criticism and frustration from this prof. Seems like he wants to blame anyone but himself for the outcome.
Came on here to after the midterm to see if anyone felt the way I did. I see everyone feels as though his tests are unfair and he does not care for students. Glad I am not alone
He sent out an email about rate my professor. I wanted to see what everyone was saying and the truth is that it is correct. This professor only cares about himself not the students.
Tests are impossible, no extra help given whatsoever, doesn't make any of the questions himself, it's all from the textbook
In terms of the prof himself, he's a very nice and genuine guy. The only thing is the tests are based off the textbook and hardly anything off the lecture and most of the students were unaware of this. Maybe he can make his lectures a little more engaging and more related to the tests but other than that he's a great guy.
Guys, let's just be nice because he has feelings, too. If the course has been hard for you, consider going to these extra hours or studying more independently. Thank you for being an accessible and great professor so far.
I saw his email about rate my prof so came to look at what people said. I had a conversation with him about my test as I did poorly on it and asked how I can improve my grades for next time and he was more than happy to give me advice and different study techniques to help me improve on the tests. I don't understand why people are being so harsh
I had Dr. Schwieter winter 2025 semester and I had an overall great experience in his course. I'm sad to see these negative considering they are inaccurate. Dr. Schwieter provided engaging lectures, his tests were fair and if you study both the textbook and the lecture slides, you will suceed. I learned lots and think he is an excellent prof!
I'm not sure what the big deal is with all these reviews. Class has been fine so far. I hardly studied for the first test (less than 2 hours) and achieved an A. It seems like people are just mad they have to put in more work then they thought. Course is very content heavy so it's understandable that questions would be complex.
Went to office hours, seems like a nice guy but he was really unhelpful. I didnt feel that the test was a reflection of my knowledge but more on my reading level. I understand that this test has worked in previous years but it is clearly failing and needs to be changed. I dedicated so much to this class just to do poorly doesnt seem right.
Seemed like an ok guy until he became extremely dismissive and passive aggressive when met with criticisms bout his tests. All good reviews on here are from people who have clearly not communicated with him or experienced this however there are multiple students who had to deal with this. Doesn't care if his students succeed or not. No effort, lazy
I love his lectures as it is very engaging and fun but his response to the midterm being too hard was shocking. i can understand the frustration of negative feedback but taking away the slideshow questions, telling the class we can use whatever technology to get an A+ to criticism of the first midterm is not what i expected. punishing students.

I found this professor to difficult in a sense that all of his lectures and slides for midterms are just heavy workloads from the text books. Over complicated a lot of his questions and when confronted about this during office hours , was very dismissive and lacked empathy. Would not taking this class.
Reading the mid-term was all multiple choice. Definitely leaned more towards the text book content, which makes sense as the questions are sourced from a related question bank. He dropped five questions the class did poorly on as a whole. Got over whelmed by negative feed back.Use the lecture slides and text book together when studying.
After the first nearly impossible test, he became defensive when students gave feedback, blaming the class for the failing average. Instead of adjusting his teaching style or tests, he told us to use ChatGPT for the next one before retracting his words and only allowing a cheat sheet. His approach has caused me a lot of stress, would not recommend.
3 tests makeup ur entire mark. last exam is in person 40% 45 seconds to answer each q & 60 questions. He doesn't care whether his students do well or not, the test was set up to fail regardless of study technique or memory retrieval. I've given up on a psych minor because of him and its too bad bc it's the ONLY content I enjoyed this term. Defeated
I thought he was a chill enough guy based on the vibes in lectures. He said taught this class once before online and have the exact test. Obviously the class online cheated and got away, my issue is he copy and pasted an online classes format and used it in person and then when it and the students failed he lashed out at the class for his poor work
This guys tests are diabolical. Gets the questions online and clearly chooses the hardest ones, and then doesn't prepare you for it. Even when he finally admitted it was too hard and gave us a cheat sheet, it wasn't helpful because the questions are SO specific and idiotic.
The tests are so bad. He selects the hardest questions from an online source he doesn't even write, and then does jack all to prepare us. Even when he finally admitted the first one was too hard and gave us a cheat sheet, it did nothing as the questions are SO specific. It seems like he doesn't want to see what we know, but mess w us..
His tests are brutal. Way too specific and the only one page cheat sheet is not fair. Specially taking back his word when he said we'll be able to use more sources, he took it down to only 1 page cheat sheet and didn't make the tests more fair.
Only graded by 4 unfairly hard tests. Not clear enough on expectations and questions are too specific and weirdly worded. Don't risk your GPA
This course places GPA at significant risk. Exams test concepts not covered in lectures, and the professor provides inconsistent guidance on permitted resources. Despite thorough preparation and allowed cheat sheets, assessments remain disproportionately difficult, misaligned, and discouraging. Good luck.
Exams cover material never taught, with misleading promises about resources later revoked. Even exhaustive study and cheat sheets prove useless. Tests are intentionally misleading, unfairly difficult, and set students up for failure rather than learning.
The professor told us we could use phones and textbooks on exams, only for the psychology board to restrict it to cheat sheets. He should have consulted them first before misleading students. Tests cover untaught material and remain unfair despite thorough prep.
As someone who had an A+ average last year, don't risk your GPA. You can memorize the textbook, have a cheat sheet, come to every lecture, & still not get an A+ on the exams. The questions are obscure & don't reflect overall content. Even he doesn't know the answers to many questions. His tests may work online, but in person, they're just unfair.
Avoid this professor at all costs. No amount of effort helps, lectures barely match the exams, and nothing changes despite student concerns. I reread every chapter, built an in-depth cheat sheet, and still scored lower on the second test. It's discouraging and feels deliberately unfair.
As others have stated, this course (or prof) will destroy your GPA. As someone who usually scores high on exams, these ones are brutal. I failed both, despite there being a cheat sheet allowed for the second. It actually made me wonder if we were assigned the wrong textbook chapters because the questions seemed so absurd + unrelated to lectures.
People who think his tests are fair likely didn't study enough and blame failing on themselves. After studying enough, I know it is most definitely how the test was made and not most of the students. Knowing the entire class is complaining and the average of 2/4 tests is a fail, he still hasn't made any changes to the weird computerized questions.
We only get assessed on 4 midterms, none of the questions on the test are based on lectures or review sessions. He doesn't support you to prepare for the test, which makes the cheat sheet almost useless. Minimal chances to get marks and puts the GPA at critical risk.
Now makes me wonder, doesn't the chair of psychology read the exam questions before they let the professors use them? Because nothing he teaches is on the exams
I have never felt so discouraged by a class in my entire life. No blood, sweat, or tears will get you a fair, deserving grade. The teacher does not care about students' success, and he has attempted to punish the class for their response to his poor teaching skills. Save yourself and your GPA.
Please do not put your GPA at risk. I took this class because I liked to learn about the brain, and this teacher ruined any previous enjoyment I found in psychology. Learn from my mistake, and please never take his class.
I am now a fourth year psychology student and have never struggled in any of my classes for the past four years as much as I did in Dr. Schwieter's first year psych class. His tests had nothing to do with his lectures, his questions were extremely difficult, and he had little to no empathy for the overall low average in the class.
The problem is his lecture and the textbook dont correlate with the midterm. Even after studying, getting the textbook questions right, and the example questions he uses in lecture right. How am I not doing well on the midterm.
Honestly don't even know how his midterms are acceptable. Average was a 38% and after the entire class has told him the questions on the midterm are absurd, he has not done anything to change that. Not even an email. Something needs to be changed in the future.
I like listening to him during lecture and the material is interesting but none of it matters because the tests will not reflect what we learn. You would have a better chance of passing the tests by guessing. I need to pass so pray for me.
He really needs to change his syllabus. In just the last day to drop a course alone, 27 people dropped it. Imagine if we counted since the first day. I wish I had dropped it sooner, and replaced it with another course. I wish I never gave his classes a chance despite seeing the negative reviews on him. Don't do my mistake, listen to these reviews.
if i could give this class negative stars i would. So many things wrong. Tests... dont reflect the course or textbook what so ever. He lies... making false promises to our class and then fakes us out. He leaves... for 3 weeks of the semester leaving us with a TA as a prof. Am i paying for a student to teach me? no. i am not.
Do not take this professor. I was forced to drop this class along with 26 others because it was impossible to succeed. No matter how much I studied, reread the textbook, or built cheat sheets, nothing helped. The tests were brutal, unfair, and completely disconnected from the lectures.
“Consider your own role”? I did by studying nonstop.. along with others, rereading the textbook, and still failing tests on material never taught. Caring about students means preparing them, not disappearing for weeks and leaving a TA to teach. This isn't resentment; it's justified frustration.
This was the worst professor I've ever had. He was rude, showed no care for students, and gave tests that didn't match what he taught. Every exam had a failing average, and instead of improving his teaching, he curved final grades by 20% to compensate.
Time spent in lectures and reading the textbook was pointless because none of that content was seen on any of the tests. I could've got the same or better grades by completely guessing on tests. Boosting grades 15% at the end of the course doesn't mean I learned anything, it's just a cop out. Do not recommend this prof for anything.
listen to them reviews guys
