Worst teacher I have ever had. Gave 0's on papers even with great effort put into them. Gives no direction for assignments then saysd they are wrong-
tough grader for journal entries, even if u tried u could still get a 0. for exams hes not a tough grader. he'll have like a couple essay questions and u choose a few. And u just describe that person/period. do not buy the book. u wont use it.
Tough guy, says all your assignments are wrong. Will tell you to turn in your paper early so he can grade it and let you do it over if needed, but rips up the paper so bad you have to write a whole new one.
I made a 100 on both papers...didn't get to see my final test (but I know it was good) and he still gave me a B- He grades on subjectiveness. He's a **** as well- DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!
His lecturea are interesting, if taking intro to HUM, one thing is for certain, u will talk about what is happening today, not 1000 years ago...
I love this guy, I don't know why anyone could have bad things to say about him. His class is the most interesting I've taken at Valencia, he's intelligent and well-read. If you understand his sense of humor, he'll crack you up.

Scolaro is a very intelligent and ARTICULATE(he uses that word often, you'll know if you've taken him). He is not an easy professor but he is by far the best Humanities Proffessor at Valencia. He has passion in teaching...and he is just great!

He is AWFUL. He was recommended by another prof- man, I wish I hadn't listened to her. He hardly covers anything in the syllabus, discussions go totally off-kilter and he grades you based on how close your opinions are to his own. He's a total poseur.
It's not true that he's subjective, he liked me and agreed with all of my ideas but I still got a C because that was what I had earned. I think he's a great prof. it's nice when someone actually makes you think about the kind of person you want to be.

Constantly says "...so forth and so on" after EVERY sentence. Gets really annoying. Does the 'quote fingers' alot, but with his whole hand which is obnoxious :*) Failed midterm. First F in my LIFE.

I am not a young chick and I took Mr. Scolaro's class at WP in 1995-6. I think many of you are mistaken. He is one of the most interesting professors I have ever had. Shame on you who think he is not. He is very well educated and a fabulous instructor

Talks a lot but doesn't actually say much. Lecture is of almost no value. Funny sometimes but boring most of the time. Thinks his weird ideas are the only correct ones. Don't contradict him, your grade will sink even lower! Avoid him for your own good.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! All but 5 people failed the midterm. Even the people who passed only got B-'s and C's, everyone esle got a big fat F. He gave no explinations to his grading, pretty much said "deal with it" and sent me on my way.
John is a really awesome guy. He's not such an awesome teacher. Every class is a lecture about something that really doesn't relate to the topic at hand - at least he doesn't explain where he's going. You won't learn much, but you won't fall asleep.

Rambles on and on, rather flamboyantly, about his Prometheus Project and other personal information and gives absolutely nothing of value in his lectures. Also loves Proust to an insane level and will require you to read books on him not in the syllubus.
He seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't grade fairly. Only four assignments: a cultural event, semester exam, a paper, and the final. You will fail or make a C on the the two exams because the whole class does, and good luck on the papers.

He's a cool teacher. Does rahter talk a lot about random things. But, all that aside, he has a sense of humor and is easy to talk to.
Mr. Scolaro really is enjoyable. It's true that he sometimes gets on a soapbox- but that just means he feels passionate about his subjects! The only problem I have with him is that he doesn't seem to want to take time to talk to his students personally.
Don't listen to the ones who said he has no direction.I mean, he doesn't have a specific format sometimes, but he gives ample notes. Plus he already said that if you don't take notes, you won't survive. So listen, take good notes, and you should be fine.
Damn, he grades wayyy to tough, he never gets straight to what he wants, and it is nearly impossible to pass his class the way he grades. The only thing positive about it is that if you pass this class the other humanities courses will be a breeze.

Class is very interesting, he is very passionate teacher. He will look at your work early, grade it and give it back for you to fix. How much more helpful would some of you like him to be, he cant write the paper for you. Excellent I would recommend him.
I dropped his class. It's impossible to pass and good luck to those who are still in his class. As we all know, Intro is not a gordon rule class. If you take him, you have to write 5999 words. What's the difference between not gordon or gordon rule class? He grades the paper like a com 1/2 proffesso

Tends to ramble on about nothing important then gives very hard tests. Tests are essay questions trying to link artists where only the vaguest ideas are slightly similar, completely insane. Avoid unless you can create obscure links where none actually exist.
maybe some people can sit through one of his classes, but i find it nearly impossible to listen to him for any longer than 5 minutes at a time. i counted the bricks on the wall the other day... then i did the math in my head, it came out to 195 bricks. boredom owned me

Many people bad mouth him because he does not give out free grades, he does it the old fashion way were you have to earn your grade. If every teacher had the standards he has then we would have brighter college grads and not just people who payed thier tuiton, showed up and was handed a degree. One of the best teachers I've ever had. I learned a lot, but then again, I did the work and asked questions. It's unbelievable how transparently the ignorance of the "students" that criticize him shines through. Forgive him for expecting students to learn rather than insist that they already know everything. If they do, why are they in school?

Worked my butt off writing papers and still made a C.. He doesn't grade fair at all. I agree you do have to kiss butt to make anything better than a C. He also puts together huge words that don't fit together to try to impress the class
Total waste of a life. Renaissance Humanities research paper: research on the so-called "mechanisms of cultural marginalization" of a certain social group by another. Total **** topics. Doesn't help you with the few assignments. Takes off a lot for not writing exactly what he wants. Insists on forcing his own POV and agenda on the class.
HE IS PRETTY ARROGANT...I thought our "research paper" was waayyy to hard, and he marked off for every little thing. He does like when you kiss up to him and plays favorites. Very weird and loud. He's funny and entertaining but not a good teacher at all. The class is a waste of time time because u dont really learn anything. You'll probably end up sleeping the whole term but if u write all the papers and come to the exam you'll pass. If your self motivated this will b a piece of cake 4 u but otherwise i wouldntrecommend

Really a good professor. If you work hard, you can easily pass this class. If you slack off and don't try hard, you will fail. Period. He is not "weird", he is "fun." He tries to make class interesting, and he does.

What a wonderful guy. He is amazing. The guy remembers everyone he taught even if it is by your class name. He is a bit off the wall but a great guy. He is willing to help you with any problems he is amazing. I would highly recommend him.

seems to be a nice guy but gets off topic very easy and does not communicate what he is looking for on his tests. the only thing that i know about from taking this class is that he is pompous and he knows more than anyone, in fact i know more about his personal life than i do about class material. think twice before you take this class.
When he relaxes & simply teaches he is fantastic.Unfortunately he does go off topic. Its true that there are only 4 official grades given, that will add pressure.Syllabus stated 5 sections to cover, we barely made it tothe beginning of 2. What I learned I enjoyed. I signed up for the class with an interest in the subject and had read the rating and comments on this site, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, they were correct. he is a wonderful man and teacher however he does has his flaws.he only give 4 assignments and they are all paper which is stressfull concidering that you only have one chance to make or break your grade so do nt take this class unless you are sure of yourself and aware of the consequences behind all of this.other than that it was interesting.
He is a very nice guy however teaching isnt his best thing. He constantly is jumping around and you usually get so confused you might as well forget learning anything. Also the class was supposed to be about 20th century humanities but he didnt teach that at all. Instead he was concenrned with Picasso and creativity.
This professor is a mismatch for VCC. He should be at Yale or Harvard. The negative comments are due to the "pearls before swine" effect. If you take him, be aware that you are going to experience a top-notch European style class such as you might see at Oxford. Bring your A game and go for it! Dr. S is nothing short of astounding.

Very intellectually stimulating instructor, which does not seem to suit many Valencia students...he leads the lectures in very charismatic fashion and expects high quality work. He is a great asset to VCC, as he imposes somewhat academicly eccentric behavior, which community colleges so desperately lack.

His lectures and energy in class are great but he is cold and indifferent during office hours and in regards to assignments. 85% of class got F on Midterm. I got one of the highest grades and it was a C-; studied my @ss off.

Professor Scolaro [in my opinion] goes way overboard with his grading. He grades on his moods and is very anal about essay writing. He generally assigns a "journal entry" ever week and if he doesnt like something as little as the title of your entry... you get a big fat F!!! I highly DO NOT recommend him!

I Really do not recommend anyone to take this class. His grading is really hard and he is very anal about your writting. His a nice guy, but the class is all lecture. You dont really need your book at all, so I dont recommend anyone to buy it, you'll just be wasting your money.
Mr. Scolaro is THE best teacher I have ever had. Class is never boring. He requires a lot (but I assume he has to, it is a gordon rule class). All you have to do is keep up with your work, know how to write, have an opinion, and you'll get good grades. Pretty simple. He's awesome.. if you still have to take humanities, I highly suggest Mr. Scolaro.

personally I thought professor was very hard. I found his lectures to be interesting, but the essays and papers are almost impossible to pass. By spring break time there were 9 students remaining out of the beginning 35 or so. He is very anal on writting and will take points off for very petty things. DO NOT take this class !!
Great professor... he's funny... He's passionate about what he does. Taking him over summer is great. He makes it easier for you.. The class itself is Borinnnnn but he was great.
Great Professor. If you are looking for an Easy A this is not the professor for you. But if you are a hard worker or a determined person then you will get a good grade. he's easy to talk to and he's quite funny. He makes class interesting. Taking him in the Summer is a great Idea as well .
Your nightmare professor. He grades like an English teacher, and is very boring. Takes HUM way too seriously. It is very difficult to pass this class. He does not make it clear to class what to study. Pure Essays

I enjoyed his class. He is very funny and he gives great notes. If you miss his class, you will be lost, and he quizes based on his notes and handouts. But he gives you everything you need to succeed, you just have to dedicate time to it. He gave me an A+ on my research paper, so he isn't that harsh. If you work hard, your ok.
Interesting professor. Funny at times. Never used our books once, so dont bother buying them. Grades incredibly hard. As a straight A student... I left his 20th Century Humanities class with a C. Must take lots of notes for quizzes. Extremely hard exams. Must work ridiculously hard for your grade.

DONT take John Scolaro if you have a choice. Im a very good student and its not that his class is hard because its not but he doesnt count the grades you get along the course of the class (no tests only weekly BS quizes), he gives grades as he pleases. He is probaly the WORST teacher I have ever had. Final comment he sucks!
This professor was kind of weird at first and he seems hard at first but the truth is once the semester start rolling in, he's the easiest professor there is! He's cool, tells funny and corny jokes, and his quizzes( we dont have tests only final essay) are super easy if you know the lecture! i recommend u take him! i know i am!

I took Prof Scolaro's class in 1995. He was dynamic. His lectures are wonderful. If you take notes and pay attention and do assignments, a "A" is definitely a sure thing! Those who did not do well, did not try.
Simply put. Not worth the trouble. For a humanities class his grading is too steep. Take an easier teacher, receive a better grade. He's a nice guy, but he grades too harshly. You learn a fair amount, but not worth taking the C or D on your GPA. Warning: Straight A students only (you still will take the hit, grade-wise).
He teaches through a direct and humourous style. Very good teacher if you like someone fun and passionate about his subject. Be aware though, he does throw you some pretty tough assignments, like the 2 essays(one is 1500words, the other is 2500 words)that are worth a large percentage of your grade. Overall, he is my personal choice for a professor.
This is a do as I say not as I do professor. Doesnt hand back midterms until after drop date. Most of his classes failed the midterm. Just need to right strong to the point papers. There are not any test just weekly quizs that are BS. Majority of the points are from the 4 papers that need to be written(Gorden Rule). Go somewhere else.

I took it cause it was the only class avail on Atlas. very nice guy and interesting class, however grades Very hard. he doesnt teach on 20th century at all and mostly discuss religion. if u like to suck up, this class is for u.. Two papers, a mid-term essay, and a final exam essay. At least 800 words for the exams, well over that for the two papers. The weekly quizzes are taken straight from things that he talked about the class before. If you take notes, you will do fine on them. Exams are a pain, I failed the midterm. Still got a C. Nice guy, funny, very intelligent.
Very loud, fun, interesting teacher. He uses humor in his lectures which make things more interesting. Very lengthy assignments though. One essay was 2500 words. He also grades fairly rough. If you go to class, listen, and retain information...you will do fine.

..he is extremely self absorbed. spends the entire class talking about himself and enjoying the sound of his own voice. he grades his essays ridiculously hard as if its an english class. funny guy but thats about it. unfortunately i will never recommend him to anyone ever, he made my hour and a half every monday and wednesday basically naptime..
I personally liked his class. I took it (20th cent. humanities) as a dual enrolement student in high school. Those who dont write papers very well and just want an easy "A", I would advise not to take this class. Those who would like a challenge and some work, then go ahead! I would recommend him to students who are serious about the subject!
He teaches the subject with humor and charts. If writing is your forte, than you'll have no problem with his class. The major parts of your grade comes from the two essays and the essay mid-term and final. Overall, a very enjoyable professor whom you'll love to spend time with.
Before taking this class, i was warned by a friend to not ever take him. Sadly i signed up for classes late, so he was the only one left (wonder why!?)He is OFF HIS ROCKER, and SOOO BORING!!! i got an F on his midterm... i have NEVER gotten and F in ANY class OR assignment before him. He has a VERY interesting style of Teaching. The textbook is useless, do not spend your money. He gives very thought provoking lectures and has more character than any other professor i've seen hands down. He gets loud in a good way during his lectures. Highly recommended!!
Don't buy the book, he lied to everyone, other than that not too bad of a guy. The class really sucked, we never discussed what humanity was, and we he discussed topics that do not pertain to humanity. The essay where you choose your topic is good, because the course material is garbage. I was interested in this class, and I am really disappointed.

Biggest waste of time. This professor rambles on and on about nothing useful. I honestly didn't learn anything relevant to the course. Mostly likes to talk about his own opinions. Only two essay exams graded strictly by OPINION of his own and one independent presentation about any 20th century issue.
I implore you, DO NOT TAKE HIM! this is a guaranteed C despite your best efforts. Literally everyone in the class failed the midterm. It was graded on mere opinion on the professor's part. He uses big words and speaks like he's teaching at Harvard. It's VCC for christ's sake! Please DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. You will certainly not get higher than a C!
Good guy, kinda funny, hearts in the right place, although a little self inflated ego. Grades like a succubus. If you arent a very convincing or strong writer, I'd stay away. He will shock with the first test, give you and A or a b on the second, and give you what you need to pass or get a C on the final.
He is very loud and definately keeps you entertained during class. Classes are not bad at all. All I must say is that if you are not a great writer, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Your whole grade is based upon essays and he grades hard. If you are a good writer, you should do well in this course.

This professor is a disappointment. If you are expecting to learn anything about the Renaissance, take another professor. Scolaro spent the ENTIRE semester on 2 out of 7 units. He does not follow his own syllabus, grades unreasonably, redundantly rambles, and you must interpret his perspective to pass. He even lectures on students' "opinions" WHAT?

Take alot of notes. There are only two grades, midterm paper and final. He does appect you to apply what was said in class. Attendence is a good chunnk of your grade, so go. Interesting and entertaining.

love mr. Scolaro! he's awesome and really gets the point across he wants you to be talking in class and actually he is very funny and attentive. He makes the class not boring at all. I loved him as a teacher. Wish he taught more humanities classes.

Horrible professor. Went off on rants instead of covering curriculum. Does not care about attendance, you could show up on exam days only, however the only content provided is from videos and lectures. Ridiculously harsh grader (grades on format more than content). Only grades on test; which are 2 for the semester. Easy to fail. Avoid!

Honestly, I liked coming to his class. I enjoyed his lectures truly. But when I got my Mid-term handed to me, something I Worked hard on, It had an F on it. Almost everyone in my class got an F. Definitely dropped his ass. I'm not some lazy slacker, I took notes on EVERYTHING he said. He thinks he's an english professor. Very disappointed.
Don't be fooled by the laid back environment of his lectures. It's obvious that he's trying to make the class fun. Many took his sense of humor and approach as a sign of "no work required." When the time comes for a test, he is serious, so you better STUDY. He's a scholar so don't expect him to be laid back when grading your essay mid-term/final.

Attended every class, walked in 5 min early every time. I used an entire 1 subject notebook taking notes. Received an a in eng comp 1 and 2. This guy grades papers like he is teaching a lit class. If you are a moderate writer you will fail this class. There is 3 grades project, midterm, and final. Choose another hum course if you value your gpa.

He is honestly the worst teacher i have ever had. The reason why is because he decieves you into think that he is laid back. I assure you that he will make you laugh, but after like 4 weeks of being in his class he will assign you an essay which most likely you'll fail because he cares more about grammar and puntuations than the actual work.WORST

HORRIBLE. You'll think it's an easy class until you take the midterm. He'll pretty much fail EVERYONE. And the highest grade he'll ever give is a 75%. Unless you're an extremely good writer do not take his class. Only puts in 3 grades so if you fail any of the writing assignments you will get no grade higher than a D.

Allow me to enlighten potential Scolaro students. The first day of class you will walk in and immediately love him. He's very approachable. Throughout the year you will have no homework. There are only three assignments, two essay exams and one research essay. Then it happens, he will fail every essay in the class without remorse. Its not a joke.

He's a little strange, and very liberal, but I still liked him. I learned a lot in his class, and he improved my writing. I like modern art now; it's cool. His grading was easy. I made A's in everything. I don't know why people say he's hard! You go, Scolaro!
There's no rubric or point system used to calculate grades in his class, which is a major problem considering that all the assignments and exams are in essay form. He gives you a letter grade based on his personal opinion without breaking down why. He simply gives A, B, C, D or F grades without telling you your grade % or points earned on anything

Dont be fooled by his laid back nature. He grades hard on major tests and weekly quizzes are ok, just take notes exactly as it is on board and add your own spark. Tests are hard af and try study your butt off. They are mostly essays.

Got a B! worked over hard for it, no point in the book. No extra credit, learn your stuff! No precise study guide, not clear what to learn just everything- when asking questions after class he repeats what he said from blackboard what to do! made amazing project but he gave everyone an A effortlessly so don't waste time on the project part!
I wouldnt recommend anyone taking a class with this Professor , since the grading criteria is pretty weird , he barely teach during the semester and the class is based on showing the students an announcement link , and then a quiz
If you wanna failed take him. Only three grades. Final is an essay 800 words in class. I repeat you have to write it in class yall. He cant teach, I dont learn anything. He just keep making some bizarre voices and thats all. Worst prof I ever had.
you only get a few grades in his class. He might seem chill but his grading is degraded. 800 worded essay to write in 2 hours and if you don't write 800 words you get a fat F. Never take his class unless you like failing.
John Scolaro is a good teacher. He has a funny sense of humor and a good heart. I think he is a tough grader, but a fair grader, if you do not appear in the class, consequently you will not pass or get a good grade. I really liked his classes and his way of teaching. I would recommend it, and I would certainly take it again.

Super easy class, but he is not consistent with grading. Quizzes are easy but if you put too much or too little you get marked off. If you want an easy class for a B then id take it again but he's a pain to sit there and listen to all class. Leets you out early almost every class.
