HE seems really hard at first, but later he is cool. HE also lets u out REALLY early. hes a nice little nerd.
He is hard, but a excellent teacher. He's awesome!!
He's hard. Too much homework.
Loved his lecture. Hard at first but gets easier towards end of semester, especially if on his A-Team. Great guy if need help.
What a cool guy!!! His tests are challenging though.
Don't be scared by his telephone book-size syllabus and his tough demeanor at the start of the semester, he gets nicer later on. His class is challenging but you'll really learn and he won't put you to sleep as most Math professors do. Pretty cool guy!
Great professor. Very helpful, lets you out early every day, tough homework but all test questions come from the homework. Easy to get a good grade if you put the effort.
ok.Heres the deal.He gives a GRIP of HW that you probably wouldnt finish cause you gotta skip lines & label EACH pg w/your name/date/assign./class/pg.By that time youre hand has fallen off. Anal about small mistakes on tests.BUT the + side - out in 20mins
the tons of HW wasn't a problem, it was his lack of teaching skills, he doesn't explain very well, not even slight partial credit on tests. get out really early, because he hardly teaches anything. i'd say awful teacher, unless your a natural math wizz
this guy is the easiest math techer i've ever had!TAke him if you just want to get rid of a math class, but if ur like me..ur not going to learn any details about math. All you'll do is do the math roobotically...-_-. BUt yeah really easy techer! And nice
Great professor. Had him for 131 also, and will be taking astro 12 with him also. Very clear and eager to help if you don't understand. Hard tests, but if you work on them enough you'll get a good grade. Also a BIG science dork.
He likes to waste paper lol. Overall, he's pretty ok. His tests aren't too too easy, but you just really have to study. Give a reasonable amt of hmwk. He's quiet, but nice. Do all your hmwk and you'll be fine. He lets you out early too.
Welcome to College. DO THE HMWK! (15 - 20 hours per week = A grade) The tests are word for word from the hmwk. How much easier could it get? Subject matter is difficult, but Sepikas works with you as much as you want. Great course!
Gives lecture real fast. Then study time, let out early to stay optional. He does not go over hw problems with class, you need to go to his desk.On all his TEST NO PARTIAL CREDIT>either the answer is right or not. 1=20 ques.youshouldstudy
A lot of homework & difficult tests, but if you know the material you can do great. Excellent teaching technique. Very helpful and wants his students to succeed. It's nice to know a teacher is in your corner.
If like me, math is your worst subject then this isnt the teacher 2 take a math class from. What takes about 2 hours 2 do will take longer. NO PARTIAL credit, unfair because u may have the right answer but simply forgot a tiny detail & now its all wrong!
One of the best math teachers I've ever had!.
too anal about hw format. belittles u when u ask questions. very dull and uninterested in his students. DONT TAKE HIM, he shouldnt be teaching
Is he ****? He makes us waste so much paper! He is very anal about the homework format. Other than that I think he's an o.k. teacher. I like his pace. Test questions are from the homework questions. "John's way" is very useful. He is quick a
If our not good at math, dont take him!!! He gos way too fast and dosn't clearly answer questions. "John's way"=John is on another planet. Worst Math teacher Ive ever had!
Not a very dedicated teacher. Cheats on number of class hours. Gives tricky questions. Basically just wants to give out information and does not really care if students are learning.
i think he's alright. the world doesn't give extra credit, and neither does John. If you do the work, like in anything, you'll do alright. He's very willing to help, you just have to ask, and as for the h/w details, thats what life is about - the details
If you're planning a career in astronomy or really like it, this class is perfect for you. Good math skills are a must. He's a great guy and he's super smart. He and his assistant Glenn are both JPL employees. LOTS of work!
"i think he's a genius" commented one student... i agree...
Newsflash! Life may be about the "details", but life is NOT all about Math. He's not a genius...he's just an uptight, math obsesssed, "my way", arithmetic professor.
easy tests. test questions come from HW. final questions come from tests. but no partial credit. leaves class during tests so take him with smart friends. dumb hw format. overall easy class, bad teacher. I got an A and im just ok at math
HE's such a B-E-S-T teacher in da world ever! Nice personality, very kind to his students, patient and really a great teacher! He teaches math131&3, astro1&12.Gotta take his class if u wanna take math!COOL,funny n funky teacher!GREAT!
Honestly the hardest class i've ever taken. He knows what he's talking about. you'll have such a greater appreciation of the universe after the class is done. i'd recommend to anyone wanting a challenge
This is a teacher you want to stay away from. No partial credit on tests. Major killer on the homework with his dumb format that wastes a ton of paper. Lectures are extremely boring and he grades too hard.
John is a really nice teacher, and lets you off an hour to 2 hours early, but he doesn't even teach! the work he does on the board are questions from your HOMEWORK! so you don't learn anything, u jus copy his work! don't take him!!
I learned so much, I recommend this class.
His class is like signing up for bootcamp.
its a **** of a class.i had 2 drop it because i knew i would fail.dont take if ur looking 4 a easy way out.gives no pratial credit.its either wrong or right.dont take.if your a slacker and looking to get by, don't take it! horrible class!!
thinks that everyone wants 2 go to CalTech & work at JPL..HELLO! some of us have other goals besides being stuck w/ a calculator in hand. If u r not a math major,he thinks your stupid! U know what Mr.Sepkia..the next time the Metropolitan Opera offers u a role let me know! You're not smart enough!!!
He talks fast and soft, so it was sometimes hard to follow. I still got an A though. His drawings on the board were very helpful. Difficult subject but it was interesting.
Did not teach the material. He kept on saying"dont worry about it, you'll learn it in math3".NO partial cred.Tests are based on your ability to memorize HW,you either know it or you don't. VERY VERY BAD!
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY, hes the biggest jack*** teacher out there. No YOU DUMB loath.i dont wanna go to CALTECH. The guy has no life and thinks everyones a math major,By the way, no partial credit. so he dosent care if you know the concept..u just gota have the right answer. thts just WRONG!!
This teacher is crazy he dosen't help you whe you ask a question and when you do he tells you to look at your notes , sometimes i don't even understand my notes so i had to drop . His class is like boot camp !!! If you want an easy but challenging teacher do not take his your just setting up to fail
he is good teacher. all his teast from the homework, I got A, so easy to get it. i recommend to take his class. he is very helpful person he answer any Q you have.
This class was great and I learned a LOT! Professor Sepikas is well versed in most disciplines of science, not just astronomy. I have been at PCC for 8 semesters now, and this is the first course for which I had to actually work hard to get an A. If you love knowledge, then take this course!
Good Prof- Firm, but fair. Solid teaching with real life examples. Lots material covered. Take good lecture notes, read the chapters, study & DO ALL THE HOMEWORK! Devote the time to this class, take advantage of the tutoring & extra credit, and you will feel good with the final grade you earned!
I agree with the last poster. If taking Astron1, do all the homework and read (almost all of) the book otherwise you will not know what to do on the test. Usually the ones that are very interested in the class will stay and class size will diminish. Recommended for avid astronomy people only.
STAY AWAY!!! STAY FAR FAR AWAY!
First thirty-minutes of class was just unmentionable. "Astro Physics" "Cal Tech" "JPL" and the infamous A-Team. Do your self a favor and stay away! The only true thing he's said is " This is gonna be the hardest class in your college career". I was once an Astron. fan, not anymore.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! HE GOES AT ABOUT 500MPH AND WHEN YOU ASK A QUESTIONS HE STILL GOES TOO FAST, AND IF YOU ASK WHY HE SAYS "YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHY" WELL I DO NEED TO KNOW WHY! NO PARCIAL CREDIT, AND HE THINKS EVERYONE IS A MATH MAJOR! AND HE THINKS HIS CLASS IS THE ONLY CLASS YOU ARE TAKING.
If you're fairly good at math take him. If you need a little help I wouldn't take him. I got an A but had to work for it. I wasn't really down with the no partial points but tests come from the homework so he's fair.
I got As in all my Calculus courses. This course is the highest math course here(Differential Equations). I dropped it. He doesn't teach math and ruins the course. He should focus on the stuffs related to the course, but he teaches Physics and non-related stuffs. BTW, he's from a Cal State NOT Caltech(check the catalog). Worst math teacher ever!
I don't know what the problem is--you're expected to do the work if you enroll in the class. If you get bad grades, it's your own fault since he makes it possible to get a good grade. He's helpful and really smart--very sexy! So stop complaining and do your homework!
An interesting but difficult class; we had field trips and discussed a lot of intersting concepts. However I feel certain students that have the potential to get a good grade are ignored, overshadowed by the "A-Team" people who gets more attention. He can be mean sometimes. I ended up with a C, probably out of pity.
The easiest math class you will ever take. People who do not do well in his class are just lazy. If you do the homework (which he does mostly in class on the board) then you will get an A in the class. 70% of tests questions are from the homework so if you just review the homework you should get an A on the tests and in the class.
A very challenging teacher who prides himself on that fact. Be prepared to study hard if you take him...you'll appreciate that when you transfer, though. Half of all his tests are proofs he demonstrates on the board. MEMORIZE EVERYTHING ON THE BOARD. If you do this and your homework, you will get an A.
This class is HARDCORE but interesting . Do not take if you think you will have a fun time looking at stars.Very hard tests and copious amounts of HW.He explains complex things in a complex way but a pretty good teacher all around.Worst part: to get an A you must be on a special "A TEAM" in which you do twice the amount of work you would normally.
From the sounds of it this Astronomy class is much easier than Astronomy 12. Just sit and absorb all the interesting facts. Only 3 tests and option for extra credit.
I am not a math whiz,I am a history major. In this is a "lower division" class he is very unhelpful and moves too fast for us mathmatical slow pokes. Many times he was half way through solving a problem bt the time I had only written it down. He frequently does things not in the book and makes you refer to your notes which you can barely get down.
John is one of the best teachers i've ever had, and i don't even go to PCC anymore... his tests are hard and he makes you be a part of the Ateam if you want an A, but if you want to learn and get an A, he is very approachable and helpful... he won't necessarily cut you slack, but he'll help you as much as he can to learn in and out of class
godd teacher and if you pay attention and do homework regularly u will do fine. i would recomend to take him
gives very little help, does very little demos on the board, if you're in his class you're on your own to learn. lectures too fast, and hard to understand the material. Gives no partial credit on test. Not a good teacher if you have a hard time in math.
He's the horror professor you never want! I can do hard but this guy is just a jerk. He is teaching because he is good at math but not good enough to do anything else with it. He put the wrong homework assignment on his web site and didn't give a damn that I did it all.
hes doesnt do much on the board. hes doesnt explain much. if your homework isnt formatted correctly you dont get credit. NO partial credit on tests makes it REALLY hard! its either right or wrong! with an hour and a half class he only teaches for the first 15 mins... MAX then your on your own. good luck 2 anyone that takes him
Professor Sepikas is a good teacher. He really takes the time to help out his students, and he really wants you to succeed. Im not a math person and I did just fine. If you just do your homework and understand it, you'll be just fine :) The tests are exactly the same as the homework.
Completely worthless class. This prof is the worst. Arrogant and self-absorbed, he has very little teaching skills. This class proved that sometimes college can simply be a waste of time. Anyone can read the book on their own and watch some videos....
unclear lectures, going 2 fast, diz pro. only teaches 4 da first 45 minz in a 3-hour class then u'll b on ur own. Class is weird, no one darez to talk even ib da teacher iz nott there, testz r based on HW, no partial creditz and fortunately u take attendance by urself. datz da only good thing in diz class
I don't know what people are talking about; this teacher is great! Test questions are from the homework, there's not a lot of homework, and you get time in class to do them! Helpful and friendly, seems scary at first but he isn't! If you do the homework you should EASILY pass.
hhhmmmmmmm....
Very nice guy but I struggled most of the time. Will definently help you with anything but there is tons of homework and his lectures are pretty fast. He letures for like 1/2 hr and lets you do "study hall". but the problem is you have to sign in for class at the VERY END of class. But if you use the time wisely, you get a lot done.
I aced the summer semester class!!
He made math somewhat easy even though I'm horrible at it... just show up every day and ask if you need help... and do the homework
No Comments
hes an ok teacher.. not much after that. just expect to do the work and youll be fine
Students respect him.His class so easy. Doing your assigment and follow his rule. I'm a internation student. Sometimes I can't understand academic questions at class, but this semester I still got A.
He is not a very good teacher, does not explain problems well and does not really go with the book. Im taking Math 3 now and I wish I had a better Math 131 teacher.
Did not answer questions, did not provide homework help, very sweaty.
You have to read that astronomy book and study really hard for the tests. I studied hard for a be. I enjoy astronomy so that helps.
He is a very nice guy and he doesn’t teach in detail. He’s nice enough to assign only parts of the each section as homework. You have to study a lot to pass the tests. Do not take this class if you won’t do the homework or study.
He is by far the worst math teacher I've ever had. He should stick to astronomy. He lectures for the first 20 mins of class and uses the rest of the class time to surf the net when he should be educating us, which is what he is payed to do! I learned more from my math tutor than from him. If it wasn't for my tutor I wouldn't have passed his class!
explains very clearly- focuses on techniques that will help in higher level math classes- its nice being able to do homework in class because you never get behind and you can ask him questions if you need to. The only problem is he does not give any partial credit- even if you make very minor mistakes. Overall good teacher though
his math 131 tests is 2 times easier than my math 125 tests. you can easily to get an A in his class.all of his tests questions are from homework,so i think most stuendent will get an A who knows how to do homework.the most easy one is final test.
such a bad professor. just unorganized, dirty/dusty classroom, not flexible, not helpful, and office hours are at 6am! what a joke. i've had many exceptionally good professors at in my PCC career, this one is the worst of my life. no heart at all. he himself is very smart but has no talent to teach.
FILTHY room, no sylabus, unorganized and bad reputation from past students. I was very interested in learning astronomy but this teacher really disillusioned me and turned me off from it.
he doesn't really manage his time, which means it's a common thing for students to wait outside, and sometimes the class has even cancelled. I don't really know why he's so into definitions that it appears on every single quizs. But he's kinda flexiable that it doesn't looks like a big deal for ttardiness or attendence.

cool teacher
if you want a teacher that could care less if you are passing or failing then take John's class. He doesn't give partial credit. He doesn't check your work on the tests or your homework. His grading system doesn't make sense and if he likes you he will pass you regardless of your grade! And if you miss something he lectured on he wont go over it!!!
i'm in trig now, but now that i have had teacher is way harder math than his, i realize how much he sucks. he's sopposedly a "mathmetician" maybe he doesn math well, but teaching he does not! he's NEVER flexible, humiliates you in front of other students for asking questions and is zzzzzzzzzboreing! save yourself. don't take him.
If you get lost easily don't take his class. He flies through the lecture, asks if everyone got it in a condescending tone, then moves on. Lectures 45 mins, then expects you to do hw for the 2hrs & 15 minutes left!
Got lost in his math 10 (linear algebra) class and dropped. Started with a lot of people but only 8 remained. He is nice and have a lot of extra credits, but not good at teaching math 10, better take Socrates because he wrote the book.
truch is he is cute for an older guy but he is a rotten teacher. doesn't even want ot learn students names, bad at TEACHING, smart but bad teacher. i dropped.
I wish that my professors were this good and hard in my own majors department. i think hes demanding and if you are a math or astronomy major you could learn a lot from him. if you don't have a lot of time dont take him as you will not be happy with your grade
Lectures a problem or two from each section, then the rest of the time you work on homework in class. Seriously. 6 quizzes, 6 homeworks, and a final. Score good on quizzes, do your homework with redic format(header, skip line, front page only) he lets you know what you should get on the final to earn which grade you want for the class. Boring &lame
I give him a smiley face because i got a A. I took him for summer. Homework is a must because TEST are from the homework. HW are due on test days. You can teach yourself from the book. Easy A.. seriously, its amazingly easy to cheat in his class ;]
I went thining that there would be lectures , but th class was run lik an dindependent study. I needed more interaction. Prof. Sepikas was a nice person but did not really seem that invovlved in teaching the class.Eventually I dropped the class and took it froma teacher better suited to my style and know I am doing well in the class.
HONESTLY, HE DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE CLASS. ONLY LECTURES FOR HALF AN HR, AND THEN THE REST OF THE TIME JUST DO HW URSELF. ONE MORE THING, HE MAKES U WASTE UR TIME WRITING UR NAME AND STUFF IN EVERY SINGLE PAGE FOR THE HW. NOT RECOMMENDED.
This prof takes advantage of his tenure at PCC. He takes no pride in teaching or students interested in learning. It's too obvious that he wants to do least amount of work but it affects grades and moral of students that really want to learn. He doesn't care about students or cleaning classroom. LEctures 30 mins, sits rest of time, leaves class.
he doesn't give you partial credit on tests, if the answer is wrong you get the whole thing wrong which is unfair. he deducts point if you don't put your name in the right format on homework. very unhelpful. goes through homework problems without explaining much, he basically just wrote out the problem and did it without saying how to get there. NO
he is great!!! very flexible and laid back! not anal like other teachers, however you must turn in the homewrk on the day of the test, and all the questions of his test are straight out of the homework, so do your homework and you will ace all your tests!!! TAKE HIM!!!
He seems like a nice guy, but you'll get little to no instruction in his class. The work isn't that hard, but the guy is extremely anal about format and structure of the problems. He didn't want to teach, so I didn't want to learn. I tapped out and took a W. This is coming from a student with a good GPA and a decent work ethic.
I took him for Math 10, without any knowledge of what Linear Algebra was, his class was tough - i admit, but he does care about his students and what you learn. A year later @ UCSD taking upper-div courses and find that i had learned from Prof. Sepikas, along with Socrates' book, many of the concepts that you won't see until much harder classes..
this is a good teacher, and for those that said he doesnt care...you are wrong!!.students on these days want to be spoon fed..and if u dont talk to him about any doubt you have of course he doesnt know that you dont know until u ask. the test is from the homework..do the homework...you pass!!
This professor is awsome!!! He helped me out so much throughout the semester. Best teacher. He lectures for about 20 minutes and the rest of the time you do your homework. His tests are the easiest thing(if you do the homework correctly)Do the homework and youll pass with A+ !!!!!
The Astronomy 12 ITV course was challenging to me, but SEPIKAS is a good instructor. There were 3 tests, of which he drops the lowest. The tests are short (<35 questions) so it is wise to focus on the topics he lectures about. I missed most of the lectures and still managed a C. If you attend them all and pay attention, you can score an A.
He's the coolest teacher ever. Do ur freaking HW and for sure u'll get an A in this class. btw the Test questions comes from the HW
He's an extremely easy teacher. He explains math the way a 5 year old can understand. He lectured for 20 minutes then the rest is left to do hw. All the est questions come from the hw so it's an easy A. Btw he wastes a lot of paper.
Prof. Sepikas is GREAT!! He's a little strict on organization of homework, but that's the "hardest" part. He teaches for about 30 mins, then the rest of the time is for HW, but he is very open to individual questions. If you ask, he will answer! =] Extremely recomended!!! =]
He doesn't teach very much. He does a few homework problems on the board and then the class goes into study session. The test questions are right from the homework, so study the hw and you'll do ok. He lectures ahead of the tests, which I don't like. We would have a test in a week on ch 5 and 6 and he would already be lecturing on ch 8.
I love this professor~his tests are so easy~JUst do ur HW urself, then u will get an easy A~,cuz the test questions are directly from the HW~i was late to the class everyday, and i missed his lectures mostly, but i was still ended up with an A in his class.
DO NOT TAKE FOR INTERSESSIONS. all he does is teach for 30 min. and after that you just do your work, not really clear and only shows how to do the easy problems. He should stick to astronomy. The classroom atmosphere is dimly lit, ugh not to mention the desks are small and annoying. You have to write your name on every paper/specific format -_-
This is one of those ITV classes. You need to stay on top of your reading since you only see the instructor once a month. Fortunately, the class was interesting. Make sure you read all chapters assigned.
itv during spring. worst professor i've taken. put his email address on syllabus, but never responded to emails. after the 3rd class meeting, he announced that students shouldnt email him because he wont respond. very unprofessional if you ask me. not at all helpful. doesnt care about students. stay on top of reading. 3 tests, drops lowest score.
Pretty easy teacher.... just do homework. Tests are easy. doesnt teach very well... but.... the class is pretty easy. not recommended for people who do not understand algebra.
Ok, do not take this guy-unless you are REALLY good at math. he's super anal, has messy notes, hard to understand, and doesnt explain the math well AT ALL. i dropped the class because i knew i would be in big trouble if i stayed. take my word for it-find another professor. you'll be doing yourself a favor.
This teacher is unprofessional and unmotivated. he likes to talk about himself and he's TERRIBLE AT TEACHING! Just becuase he's been doing the job a long time doesn't mean he can STILL do it. He's inadequate!! The division should follow up on all of these negative student feedbacks. He's a shame to PCC staff.
Previous feedback accurate. However, my biggest concern is the door sign on the first day of class which read "absolutely no adds". Six registered students were no-shows. In a time when classes are so hard to get into, it is unprofessional and unethical to deprive students of open seats. That deserves investigation!
Okay. It's hard to fire a deadbeat teacher who has tenure. Consider firing a teacher who has a unhealthy, unsanitary, dusty classroom which provides a toxic learning environment. He doesn't take adds regardless if several students are absent (the less work for him the better). Never, never replied to my emails and was unaccessible 4 office hours.
DO NOT TAKE HIM..HE DOES NOT TEACH.HE DOESN'T ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.HE SAYS THERE IS THE WRONG WAY , THE RIGHT WAY, AND JOH'S WAY, SO IF YOU DON'T DO JOH'S WAY YOU WILL FAIL SO YOUR CHOICE... HIS CRAZY
Do your hw and dont be lazy. if youre determined youll do fine.
I passed Elementary Algebra with a C, but I received an A in his Intermediate class!! All of his test problems come from homework. I worked so hard to get an A, so much that I got a stye in my eye, but it was all worth it. If you can't get a good grade in his class, I think it's your fault for not spending enough time studying!
This Teacher Is Fair And Very Good In his Teachings! I absolutely loved his Way The John's Way! Be Consistent in Your Study and You will not have any problem!!!!!!!!
i took john sepikas fall 2009. this teacher didn't offer us a syllabus until 2 weeks after the class started and never followed it. used up too much class time for us to "work in class" and never was available after/before class to clarify concepts. I drove from canyon country cause of PCC's reputation but "john's way" disillusioned/traumatized me.
He gives little to no instruction. I recommend you have some prior knowledge of Algebra before you take his class. He does one problem from each section on the board and then gives you the rest of class time to do your hw.
HE CAN'T TEACH!!!!! the john's way makes you waste time and paper. obviously doesnt give a damn about teaching so he shouldnt be so picky about how to format hw & tests. nobody gives a crap how pros do their math. the only reason im still taking his class is cuz im desperate & determined to get this outta the way. spare yourself, take someone else.
Chill teacher. Funny if you get to know him. Basic teaching. helps if you ask.
He doesnt teach, you will better off reading the book by yourself, one problem per section and then you figure out the rest.on the test if you dont know the answer dont even try , he doesnt give partial credit. he is supe pciky on homw work and "teaches" only for 20 min and then the rest is homework tine/waste of time, Save yourself
If you want to learn then do not take his class, he doesn't teach, all he does is write down the question on board then do it by himself. Test questions are from the book, so if you work hard on the hw, then you will be fine for the test.
chill class, half the class he writes problems "notes" on the board, lots of homework tho. then the other half he lets you do homework, so it's not time consuming. helps if u ask.
Its truly unfortunate that this professor feels achieved by the fact that one or two of his students succeed in his class. He makes no effort to reach out to anyone and only expects a few to thrive. His useless attempt at intimidating students during the first couple of days of class only shows his lack of understanding towards real student life an
He is a good teacher but needs to work on his teaching methods. Once you get his teaching methods then that class will be easy. He has a weird way for you to do your homework. Just do your homework and you will pass his class. If you need help on anything he can help you. I recommend him.
I feel like I didn't really retain anything from his class. I got a B by just memorizing notes that I took, but I didn't truly understand concepts. I was hoping to learn more because I was interested in astronomy. I guess he isn't a great teacher, but if you don't really care about that aspect, just study the study guide and you're set.
Took the astronomy class. Loved it, learned so much. Lots of hw, but worth it if you put the time into it. (no slacking!) He moves through material quickly, but will answer questions and offers tutorials once a week to help with understanding since it is a lot of material in a small amount of time. But GREAT class and awesome teacher.
His teaching leaves something to be desired. He does HW problems on the board and leaves most of the class time for doing HW. He is a stickler for formating your paper, but its cool that you only turn in your HW packs on test day. Makes it easy to fit study time in between other classes. If you do the work, no problem passing his class.
Stay away! He doesnt teach anything. he puts the assignment on the board and spends the rest of his class time playing computer games. he is lazy and makes things easy as possible for himself. super picky about the format of homework, if you do it his way you will pass. but i learned nothing so its made it super hard to pass at the next level.
easy class. just study the study guides. you're not going to learn a whole but it can be pretty interesting
He's th best math teacher I ever had! He explains well and fast & if u have a doubt, he will answer u right away. Juz work & study and ull get an A for sure!
Lectures very well and very easy to understand but goes super fast. Basically a good teacher all around, just not very helpful when you ask him questions in person, more helpful if you ask during class. Tests directly from hmwk and you must do all sections or no credit even if did 90% of hmwk. Hmwk is everything just to pass. 1000's of problems ass
doesn't really clarify anything, just does some problems on the board and then tells you to do your home work in ridiculously small right handed desks (I'm Left Handed). He also gives a rather obscene amount of homework but does not specify when the test is and homework is due ahead of time, but in stead tells his students last minute.
He's not helpful, even when you answer questions in class, he'll deny you. Classroom setting is very uncomfortable. Very anal about homework format and will mark you off for it. Spends only 10% of the class time lecturing. Do not take him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. PERIOD.YOU WON'T LEARN ANYTHING.
Goes over HW problems as a form of teaching but doesn't explain too much. On the bright side, most of the examples later show up on the test. PROS: you CAN use a calculator during the test, lowest test score is dropped, may give extra credit, he dedicates a lot of class time for hw (70% of test q's come from hw). CONS: no partial credit on the test
Worst professor ever. He only does couple questions from the book, then use the computer. Doesnt teach and doesnt know how to teach. Doesnt care about the students, and totally is not a helpful prof. When I took Math 3 after this class, I knew nth. I would say this class is easy because he takes all questions from the book for tests. BUT LEARN NTH!
prepare for tons of homework, do it and you will not have a problem with the test since in your homework is the key for the test. love his system and if you are a student who doesn't want to spend time doing lots of homework...don't take him
John is an awesome professor! I can't believe the bad reviews- Surely they're due to a lack of work ethic on the part of students. Astronomy 1 is a hard class. Nobody said Astrophysics was easy! Sepikas teaches with a genuine passion for the subject & knowledge of math which those who are actually interested in Astronomy will appreciate. Inspiring!
His class was the best class I've taken on campus so far. He's very enthusiastic and it makes it very fun to learn. There are some RIDICULOUS ratings here. This professor rocks! He's EXTREMELY HELPFUL, smart & really cares about his students. He provides HIGH quality education with the price of a community college class. He's a wonderful professor.
Probably the hardest class you'll take in your college years. Honestly, Professor Sepikas is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. He has a real passion for the subject and genuinely just wants you to learn something. If you take this class, I have one thing to say: Don't give up. Staying in the class payed off for me, and it will for you too.
ok. no, just dont do it. he makes you memorize proofs. memorizeproofs. whats the point of memorizing a proof? no one knows! we dont know what were doing! ihe has unnecessary math, very high math, that has nothing to do with the course. its ridiculous. and hes a nice guy i guess, but this class is not worth the stress and unnecessary lower grade.
This guy gives you a study guide with enough time to memorize all the information given, but take good notes it should be fairly easy. He offers extra credit. This should be your last resort if there aren't any other classes available.
Most reviews on here are honestly from people who slack off and don't try. The professor is GREAT and has a real passion for the subject. The class is tough but not impossible. He made me love astronomy!
I took Sepikas for a math class, he is very clear in his lectures, humorous, love his interesting historic math stories. About 70% off class time is for his study sessions (doing homework), which really helps, because he is there if you have any questions. There is a lot of homework, but the test is also based from homework questions.
John will be one of the best professors you will ever take while at PCC. He has a great passion for the subject and is not reluctant to explain something you don't understand. The class is extremely hard but if you apply yourself you will get an A. DO THE HW!
Thinking about taking his math class? then pls do so! Amazing prof!He lectures for about 1-1:30hrs, then the rest is for you to do homework, and ask questions. he is funny, & he makes the class interesting!Tests are always 20 q's and based off of hw. if u dont understand something he explains till you do! Gives a lot of e.c, so answer q's in class!
This professor will make work your tush off like no other class you ever had before. PCC states you only need math 131/139 as a pre-req. But you'll end up doing physics, calculus, and related subjects in that range. don't believe what PCC says, please take higher end course of math before taking this class. it's nothing BUT math.
if you are thinking about taking math 131 and passing then take him. he lectures for an hour or so then lets you do hw, and he is there to help if you have any questions. the tests are from the hw. so do the hw and you will pass. he drops the lowest test grade. tests are only 20 questions each.he kinda makes you relax when it comes to math...
He is a super knowledgeable professor with real passion towards the subject. He is willing to teach if you are willing to learn. The class is demanding, you have to read the whole book and understand all the concepts. It requires good memory too. But it is not impossible to get good grades.
Brilliant man, passionate, caring. Knows his stuff inside & out, what he doesn't know perfectly he'll honestly tell you outright and give a summation to the best of his knowledge. A prof. not meant to pass out grades but to educate. That being said, this is definitely one of the hardest courses offered at an undergrad at any university in the U.S.
Great teacher. He understands you're level of math comprehension and will pass you as long as you do your homework. I personally found the math to be extremely hard and did not pass all of my tests yet i still passed the class with a good grade. He basically teaches a high level Math course but grades for like an average class. I'd take him again.
Amazing! Very passionate and capable, but beware he is a mathematician and physicist, this class is NOT EASY! One of the most demanding undergrad classes in any college. 75% of students drop/fail because they can't handle. DO ALL HW, ATTEND ALL LECTURES, SHOW UP EARLY TO GET MILLER'S HELP. Test are HW/LECTURE HEAVY, a good memory helps too.
The stress related dropout rate is no joke. He challenges us so hard that real challenge is not breaking down. But if you can just hold on... It's worth it. You want Caltech? Take Sepikas at PCC; anywhere will look like a cakewalk afterward. His class doesn't just teach math, it's a fire you pass through - if you dare. Hold on tight. It's worth it.
Great professor! He's definitely passionate about his work, and he's always available for help and clarity on the material. I took him for Ext. Spring '13, and he was able to teach us everything at a comfortable pace. He doesn't use MyMathLab, drops lowest hw & test score, and even gives you time to work on hw in class! Fantastic teacher.
First off, he is a great professor, if you ask the same question 100 times, he will still answer. He gives a bulk of homework to do before each test. There are 5 tests, each for 2 chapters.DO THE HOMEWORK, it'll save your ass. Super nice, super easy. Some questions from the tests are the ones he does on the board.Seriously if you study you will pass
The most caring, the most knowledgeable professor at PCC.
Easily my favorite professor so far. So passionate about the subjects that he teaches, and honest about the difficulty of his classes. Brilliant man, helpful and knowledgable.
Class I took was more of a telecourse where I would only attend class 1x every 3 weeks. There's no hw, just 4 test. Overall simple, just do the reading, study guides, & take notes! He's funny too!
Excellent Class.
I really liked this class and found it very busy if not necessarily hard however I really like science and I've had quite a bit of math there is only some math in this class, but having seen that bit before helps. Others I knew in class found it difficult, but I think everyone who stuck with it found it very cool, even if not easy.
"Mannnn too easy."
Mannn, too easy
He is probably the best math professor I have ever had. He is truly passionate about his job and wants the best for his students. The test questions are from the homework. YOU NEED TO MASTER THE HW. This is the very first time I received an A in any math class. Trust me. I was never good at math until I took him. Work hard and you'll survive!!
I'm an A student & received a C. Try to take all exams, he won't stand for bs. I sacrificed myself for you guys, I now know the key to the tests, THE STUDY GUIDE. You have video lectures, the book, but the study guide is the key to the test. I regret ruining my gpa, but take my advice if you're going for this class. I wish I had known.
Professor Sepikas is by far the most inspirational and intellectual you'll find on Pasadena City College's campus. His lectures are very impressive within the realm of EVERYTHING! The class subject touches base from conceptual Astronomy to its mathematical inductions and will leave you overwhelmed with the vast knowledge Galileo, Newton, and the brilliant Einstein have uncovered about our Universe. I highly recommend this class for those who appreciate a challenge and are commited to completing what they start.
Dont skip class because if you miss a day, you'll be very behind. Must pay attention to do well on tests. He grades homework so that'll boost your grade a little. Memorize formulas to pass or you'll fail. Got an A but it was tough.
For math 131, he's a good prof. Lectures for 1-2 hours and then assigns hw, but he lets you do your homework during the rest half of class so you don't have hw to do at home. Usually people finish or finish half way and then leave early.
"This is the hardest class you'll ever love" And boy is it true. This is not an easy class and he sounds harsh until the drop date, then he cuts back. He treats the class as a graduate class, you can actually talk to him! If you talk to him, he'll work with the class on test dates and content- he adjusts to the class' level. Prepare to work tho!
Prof. Sepikas is all in all an ok professor. HOWEVER, his lectures are relatively confusing because he goes over the material too quickly; His homework assignments are due on the day of the tests (4 tests, 1 final); His grading is tough, NO PARTIAL CREDIT!! Sign in sheet every class, so he knows you were there. In his class your major is MATH!!
I usually hate math, up until i took this class. Sepikas makes everything clear and straightforward he doesnt make you feel stupid when asking questions, his class is 50% lecture then the rest of the class is study session where he will help as much as needed. homework is the usual for a math class and dont try to sneak things by him
His lectures are clear, and will help you solve every single problem on the homework and on the tests. Test, are a bit difficult, but only because he doesn't give partial credit. You either did it right or not! However, the test problems are the exact same from the hw!
Professor Sepikas is easily the most inspirational teacher at PCC. His knowledge of the subject matter is incredible and his lectures cover everything from Astronomy to subjects like Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, and Cosmology. He treats his students like grad students and is eager to help them. This class is hard, but worth every minute spent.
Professor Sepikas is always there for you to ask any questions. He's a very caring Professor who wants nothing best for his students. Obviously, math is hard for a lot of us. But if you don't put the effort, of course you won't pass class. Test questions literally come from the book so if you do your homework you'll pass his tests.
Professor Sepikas is by the far the best! Very straightforward with what he expects out of his students, and he is there after class and before class to help students out, offers a lot of extra credit if you pay attention! Best at PCC!
Getting an A is very easy in Sepikas's class. All you have to do is be there during lectures that are not very long. If you need any help, he is always there. He gives a lot of homework but he gives you a lot of time to do the homework. Half of his classes is lecturing and the other half is a study session.
Class was super easy, lectures for 20-30 minutes and you do homework for the rest of the class. Breaks out randomly and talks about interesting stuff like math geniuses of the pass and astronomy. Sets up a telescope if anything is interesting happening at night. You can just use the library textbook if you don't want to pay for one.
Such a fast pace teacher. He only accepts work in his exact format and requires you to use his methods on tests. Yes, he lectures for half the class, but his writing is messy and isn't thorough. If you're not good at math, this class will be hard. No quizzes, just exams every 2 weeks or so. If you're good at math, this class will be a breeze
Strongly advise no one takes this course with this professor, Extremely fast- paced and his writing is almost impossible to read at times. No partial credit whatsoever, I ask him for help and he changes the subject to how old I am and how many hours I work like its my fault. Once he goes over a lesson you will never see it again until the test.
If you like fast-paced lessons, then this is the class for you. There is no midterm. However, there are tests almost every 2 weeks and a final. You NEED to do your homework if you want to pass this class. Lectures for maybe 20-30 min depending on the lesson, then, study session after (NOT optional). He sometimes lets the class out 30ish min early.
Hard class
As an art major students I entered this class with ZERO KNOWLEDGE of Astronomy, but I walked of this class with many life beneficial knowledges not only on astronomy but had a better understanding on physics and the very world we are living. This is the class I would recommend my own child to take it (if I have one), the experience was amazing.
He asks for students to participate in class, and he's very helpful. He will explain again and again if you don't understand. Took his class summer time and I was able to get an A, but expect homework that he'll give credits for. Catch his mistakes and you'll get extra points that could add up easily. I would take his class again.
For me, math is the subject I struggled most in. While taking this class during Fall, this class was more of a review for me of what I learned in high school. Overall, his test are based off the notes and hw, so if you understand the hw and take notes you should be fine. As for the final, review off the previous test! FYI no online code(:
The class was pretty average. He lectures for 20-30min and the next 2 hours are study time, which is great for getting all the hw he assigns done. Not very helpful when asking questions, just told me to look on his website. Hw is easy points and he gives out super easy extra credit points.
If you have a previous knowledge of astronomy, then you will do just fine. Be sure to read your book & watch the videos! This is not an "easy A class". You get what you pay for-which is an actual education that you can carry with you no matter what field of study you are pursuing. He cares about his students, so he makes himself available to you.
Professor Sepikas was an interesting professor..... His tests are interesting... really not that hard if you study the study guide and study note from the lecture you should do just perfectly fine. He doesn't give you any hit what would be on the test or how it will be so just expect the STUDY GUIDE AND LECTURE. Great Lectures.
I am pretty good at math but I had to drop unless I wouldve failed! He's very rude & if you dont do the homework his way, he'll knock off so many points for it! His lectures were BS since they were 20 minutes long and the rest of the time is 'study time.' He hates answering questions and makes you feel like you should know everything already.
I dropped this class on day one! This professor is a joke! He repeatedly states that he teaches at University level. Well I attend a university, I was just here for the summer, and let me tell you he doesn't teach like and university professor I have ever had! I don't have room to write how ridiculous he is, so sit 1day in his class and you'll see!
Do not take this class! Not helpful whatsoever, lectures are VERY short, fast paced.
This teacher is very meticulous about what he wants and what he requires even so much is how you write your name. He does not give partial credit on problems that you get half right. You are required to skip a line for every problem and not write on the back of the paper you have to use a whole nother sheet of paper and NO COFFEE allowed, or mint
The worst teacher I've ever taken in my life! He is the kind of teacher to give 12 assignments every week and will go out of your way to make your life harder by making you do exact formatting he wants or no credit at all. After the first test in his class i saw no more than 2 people pass and 7 kids dropped the class. Don't take this class.
If math isn't your strong suit (meaning, you can teach yourself the material if needed), I don't recommend this instructor. I think he forgets that he's teaching a remedial math class at a community college and expects way too much of his students. This would be respectable if he himself held his role as a teacher to such high standards- he doesn't
This professor was interesting. He is very particular about the way that you format the homework. Be aware that there is no partial credit for the exams. If you are really good at math, and are use to a fast pace class , you can take him. But if you math isn't your strong suit, I wouldn't recommend.
No partial credit on exams. Demanding about arbitrary stuff- he will literally NOT accept your HW if the header is not written out EXACTLY how he wants it (on EVERY PAGE, FRONT SIDE ONLY, this includes the notes you take in class). The environment he creates is not conducive to learning (his ONLY job) so it's set up to seem adversarial. Avoid.
Don't take this teacher if you can help it! Lectures for 20 minutes then makes you stay for the remainder as "study hall" like he's doing YOU a favor. He doesn't give partial credit on exams. And knocks off points for the silliest things (h.w./notes format). Thinks he's teaching at MIT-dude, you're at PCC, just like the rest of us!
This is a hard class that is heavy on the math side. I would recommend knowing a little calculus before taking this course. The professor rushes a bit through the math teaching, so be sure to ask lots of questions. Do the homework, attend the tutoring, do the reading. I love astronomy and I walked away from this class with a deeper understanding.
He was a really nice professor who goes really fast, doesn't explain things well but does better on a more one on one, tough grader but willing to give extra credit, willing to stay longer to help you understand, remember the two songs, & don't procrastinate if possible or the tests and your grade with slowly die.
If you take this class you're basically going to be teaching yourself a lot of the work. He lectures for about 10 minutes and rushes through a few examples from 3 different chapters and then you're on your own for the rest of the class doing homework. The amount of homework he gives before each test is insane and you use a tonnnn of paper.
Course is fast paced and unforgiving. Everyone I spoke to in my class shared the same complaints about him, he lectures too fast and he works off a blackboard with room for 2 problems, we're constantly playing catch up to copy down all his stuff as he starts to erase it. HW level is insane, and he insist on a certain format for everything.
All homework needs to be done in a specific format or else points are taken off. It takes a considerable amount of time just to make sure that format is what he is asking for. He gives out a lot of extra credit for participating in class. Tests are graded WITHOUT partial credit so beware of small mistakes. Lowest test is dropped at the end.
This class was awesome but only if you know some physics/math beforehand and are willing to study until can't remember your name (but can somehow remember the Stefan-Boltzmann constant). He has this weird thing about the "A team" where you can't extra credit your way to an A and basically have to maintain an A the whole semester.
I was taking the summer class, which is a fast paced course. But this guy is on a other level. He has a specific format that you have to follow. Everyone does math differently, people work things out differently. But nope, you have to do EVERYTHING his way or zero credit. Homework and subject is easy, but this guy's expectations are ridiculous.
Amazing professor that requires studying and hard work. He is not the professor to take if you're looking for an easy A, but he will push you to do the best you can and to learn the material. I wasn't the greatest at algebra before this class, but Sepikas taught me to be a better student and his formatting, although tedious, was very very helpful.
You shouldn't take this class if you care about the environment. He gives a lot of homework and has a super specific template you have to follow, so you end up using several papers for one assignment. He's also really picky with his "last name, first name." format, and will dock points if you forget. He also teaches really fast, hard to keep up.
He would lecture for about 10-15 minutes and then it would be "study time" for the next two hours. There are more than 10 sections of homework due on test day, but if you miss just one you basically fail because its -10/25. I went through three 2 subject notebooks before the semester ended and all that paper ended up in a recycling bin.
He assigns a lot of homework, so you need to be on top of it otherwise you'll be behind. Terrible professor, would not take again. It's all self study because he goes so fast during his lectures.
This professor does give a lot of hw, all of it really does prepare you for the test! He is always available during class to help with your homework like others have said he lectures for 15 mins and then you start the hw! Hes a funny caring person. Most important thing to note is to do ALL the hw, ask questions, and there is no half points on test!
Honestly, he is just a really hard teachers Especially for a math course. he has a super strict way of doing things even writing your name down. Even though I like structure this was too much for me. There is a ton of homework and don't expect to be able to just leave even if it's an important event. Would not take again...
Avoid this teacher- he puts more effort in reinforcing silly rules about how you format your HW and notes than actually teaching. He lectures for the first 20 minutes and then makes you stay for the remainder as "study time" (if you leave it gets marked as an absence). No partial credit on exams. I recommend ANYONE else!
Excellent.
I highly recommend this professor for math131, easy A class!!! the only thing is lots of homework, and the lowest exam will be dropped!!! very nice guy, but he don't speak loudly so you need listen very carefully during the class or sit in the front row. he will dismissed the class about one hour early every time!!!
Such a great professor who really cares about his students success and enjoys teaching. makes you work for it but you'll be more successful down the road for it!
Must write first name, last name, assignment, class and date on the upper right corner. Lecture (30 minutes) and the rest study session (1hr 30 min). Exams : 4 (100 points each) Homework : 4 (25 points each) Final: (200 points). No partial credit on exams and final. He goes through the lectures fast. Caring, but requires students to work hard.
Professor Sepikas made UCLA level Pre-calc a challenging but very rewarding and fun subject to learn. There is definitely a lot of homework, and although during the quarter I felt a bit overwhelmed with all the new material, I am so grateful because now I am doing well in a pre-medical post-grad program -- all thanks to his caring nature! Amazing!
Dr. Sepikas' class is by no means easy, but I recommend you take him if you are planning to become a math major, or just have a strong interest in math. His class is proof-based and after talking to my friends, his class is miles ahead of other math classes. I really enjoyed his class, but it definitely took up a lot of my time.
His classes are not for the faint of heart. He has a TON of passion for math and its history and he will show it. You will have to study and review constantly to get an A, but it's far from impossible. Lots of proofs and memorization on tests. Heavy emphasis on theory rather than solving. Tests are very similar to the study guides though.
Avoid this guy if you don't like a ton of math hw to work on. He assigns way too much! His class also goes like this : Lecture (30 minutes) and the rest study session (1hr 30 min). 4 Exams: (100 points each) Homework : 4 (25 points each) Final: (200 points). No partial credit on exams and final and goes through the lectures fast. Hard to keep up!
He teaches at university level, meaning you should review the material before class and gives out homework for every section (mostly odds). His lectures are easy to follow but hard to understand if you don't know the material. He's pretty nice if he notices you're putting the most effort you can. Gives extra credit in the class. so pay attention!
At first Professor Sepikas was quite intimidating and stated his expectations. He gives you a lot of freedom and treats you like an adult. He is clear about what will be on the test, so if you pay attention to him, you should know what to expect. He gives a lot of homework, but gives you time to work on it in class and ask for help, if needed.
Professor Sepikas was a good teacher but in the class, you feel like you in a boot camp and he is your drill Sargent so you need to be really organized and work hard. Basically, he is not a community college professor but a university professor and during his class, you will become very familiar with how UC, USC classes will look.
I took this class online during covid and it was honestly really amazing! The class was asynchronist so I chose my own hours to work and take tests. He gave us the pdf of the textbook for free! All he asked was for us to take the quizzes/test by Wednesday afternoon. Homework was not turned in or graded but some questions are on the quizzes/test.
I can't stress enough NOT TO TAKE THIS CLASS, ESPECIALLY ONLINE. I only stayed afloat because I took AP Calc in hs. Even so, this was ridiculous. The man DOES NOT LECTURE, only assigns Youtube videos. The weekly discussions are based on your work in a CODING PROGRAM. THIS IS NOT COMPSCI. His grading is harsh and unclear. Do not take.
A good portion of his quizzes don't test you on the basics, or the questions provided in the textbook. Instead, he will ask you questions from videos he assigns that are somewhat related to a fraction of what was learned in the text. He should instead prioritize ensuring you understand the basics of everything that was covered in a chapter.
I had Professor Sepikas for pre-calc, math5a, and stats. He was more understanding in his calc class, giving study guides and partial credit. There's a lot of homework, but the answers don't have to be right. Shorter lectures for pre-calc, so it all depends on the material. Take this class if you have a solid math foundation and a quick note-taker.
Expects u to understand not just calc, but physics & chemistry also. Tests are insanely difficult, there are only 3, & don't expect compassion. Other than whats on tests, he's very clear abt what he wants, how he grades, and how smart you need to be to get though the class. Also insults students in front of class. If u have accommodations stay away
This professor is an ivy league's professor wannabe. Expect you to do a lot of reading, while he doesn't even teach anything. He publishes some online lectures from outside sources, most of them are unorganized. He prohibits you from using tablet to do quizzes, in fact you have to use 1 paper for each problems! What a waste of paper!
This is a Ivy league wanna be teacher, assigns homework that has nothing to do with calc2. Tests are based off of 5 year old videos that he found on youtube. Excepts you to know Chemistry and Physics before taking his class. Overall stay far away from this teacher, everything is self taught. Only plus is he drops the lowest test.
This class gave me my 1st B ever, but what I learned far exceeded basic calc. He taught us calculus beyond the surface level, diving into apps of it as well (optic stuff!). He also provided a lot of great advice towards future plans. He drops 1 test out of 3, but is lecture-heavy. If you're going into STEM, I highly suggest you take his class.
Exams are difficult, but everything is in video lectures. His grading is tough, but it is still possible to pass with an A
Do not take his class. Seriously a waste. Did not learn anything. All the reviews are true.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He only provides youtube videos for all the lectures and the contents are super unorganized. I could say Khan Academy is even way better than his class. Test questions are unrelated to mathematics and some of the exam questions are not taught in class. You basically are not doing math questions but only proving some laws
His tests are SUPER hard, lectures are beyond your level. Teaching 5B content already. He only gives YouTube videos, no lecture at all. Get ready to teach yourself if you choose his class.
Everything was REALLY HARD ESPECIALLY THE EXAMS. I do not recommend take all his courses.
2 words horrible teacher. He took away 5 points for not completing a question on a test and another 5 for the same reason. Overall if you want to survive with a passing grade in his geometry record the lectures, the textbook, the videos, nothing helps. Avoid him at all costs.
He doesn't lecture at all or give assignments that correlate to the test information. His grades are solely based on test scores and he only gives 4 tests, so if you fail one... GOOD LUCK. Oh and also he said in his syllabus that he would drop the lowest grade, but he never did it for my class.
Horrible professor that deserves to be fired or retired. He is a boomer so when it comes to technology, he doesn't know how it works very much. 100% self taught course if you take online. Quizzes and tests include materials that are irrelevant to the course and picked out from videos or whatever. Learned nothing from this professor. Fire him please
I've taken physics and chemistry before and I still don't understand this calculus class, which includes physics and chemistry on the tests. You also have to know how random mathematicians contributed to society. I had to hope that there was actual calculus questions on the final. GG would not take again.
What a joke of a class. "Lectures" are 10yo youtube videos that he didn't make. You have to burn down a forest every test since you are forced to do only one problem per page. Has random physics "supplements" that are tested on instead of actual material. The only thing I learned is the effect of sniffing too much leaded gasoline during your life.
Worst professor I have had in years. You need to do research papers on mathematical figures, required to know physics and its concepts, and do mini coding for math. Attendance is not mandatory, but he never mentioned online that tests are on campus only and I only found this out by messaging my classmates because he never responded to my emails.
Definitely one of my favorite professors I have taken , can really feel his own passion for the subject and shows it's applications across STEM fields. If you are going to be a physicist/engineer take his class , it might seem challenging at first but he teaches problems you definitely will see again in other classes.
Nauseating threatening tirades about (often ridiculous) rules and expectations, as if speaking to children he knows are going to cause trouble behind his back. Appropriate for high school, NOT college. It's disrespectful. As a Masters student taking this class for refresher, very disappointed to remember this is how professors treat young students.
Not a good teacher and sets unclear grading criteria. Lectures are scattered everywhere and you might as well learn from YouTube by yourself. His class would most likely pull down your GPA. He also has very environmental unfriendly practices such as making sure you use a new page of paper even if the answer is two lines long. Pretty inpatient too.
Uses a lot of irrelevant videos from YouTube, does not prepare any of his own, sets weird rules for his own convenience, no study guide or sample questions, does not care about students at all.
awful, dont take his class. If there was another guy with Math PhD around, PCC wouldn't hired this guy.
No clearing criteria and extremely tough grader, he also does not explain what you do wrong, none of his teaching materials are his own and he uses random unverified sources from the internet.
Don't take his class. He will bring down your GPA. He lectures u about other subjects like physics, and chemistry. No electronic devices, just notebooks with irrelevant set-ups. Exams no partial credit. Homework is HEAVY with no class explanation. Exams about canvas videos and class lectures. Hour-long videos about math history and all self-taught
The bad reviews are genuine. He is not available during his office hours. His exams are worth 100 points, and about 30 points are for the history of math and physics. All exams are accumulative. He got stuck in 2020, where everything was online. His classes are more "study sessions," and if you leave early, he marks u as absent
Once, I asked him about one of the videos he posted because I did not understand. He told me not to worry; it wouldn't be on the test, so guess what? It was on the test. Also, He spent three classes explaining the gold foil experiment and never tested us on it. He barely explains homework exercises. You need to teach yourself from his videos.
He is a good person, and he cares a lot about his students' learning, but if you are a full-time student and you work, don't take his class. It would be best if you were 100% focused in his class. Watch all the videos, teach yourself, learn how to prove theory, and know a little bit about the history of math and physics.
He made me cry for a whole day because of how difficult his lectures are. It makes me feel like I'm not good enough for this class.
Don't take his class if you have another subject with four or five units. If for some reason you did not have the option and you had to take classes with him: take notes of everything he says because it will be on the exam. Your readings and videos are key. Homework doesn't help you review topics, it's just a waste of time.
My experience with him has been the worst at PCC.
This professor is a boomer! Im taking his class and I'm living my worst nightmare. Be ready to have exams that don't have anything to do with the lectures
Makes you write papers about random mathematicians instead of actually preparing you for the tests. No lectures in the online class, only a series of Youtube videos he didn't make, many of which have nothing to do with the material. Tests often include random physics supplement material that have nothing to do with differential equations.
Don't take this professor for your own good. Everything written about him on this page is true, don't take him unless you're super desperate. You have been warned.
Prof Sepikas is a great professor. The course was challenging because there was a lot of material, but he make it pretty easy to understand. As long as you attend lecture, write down the examples, do the homework, and pay lots of attention to the examples in the textbook, you'll do fine. He's very supportive of students who are interested in STEM.
Lots of helpful videos on YouTube. No lecture. Most of the information on test is in the homework given. Anybody saying other wise. Clearly did not do the homework or did not see the similar connections. Some are within the sample pictures. Read your book and you will succeed. Final tests on all chapters.
Professor Sepikas is a wonderful lecturer who's passionate and cares for his students. His lectures are amazing and he assigns a lot of homework. If you want to actually learn math and are willing to put in effort and hard work, take his class. IF however, you just want to pass the class and go through the motions, do NOT take his class.
If you pay attention in class and practice what he says to you'll do fine, but there's also a lot of extra videos to watch which are on the exams. He's pretty lazy in aspects and doesn't give great feedback. He likes to make students nervous but he just wants you to work hard. If you like math you'll do okay, but if not then I don't recommend.
Enrolled in this course as a refresher and was completely disappointed in the material, teaching style, and support (or lack there of) received. Deducts points for not following his approved format, instead of paying attention to whether or not the students were doing the math correctly. This teacher is NOT student centered, avoid at all costs.
Professor Sepikas' class is challenging, but if you put in the effort - attend lectures, practice the examples, and use helpful resources like unstuckstudy AI - you can succeed. It's not an easy A, but you'll learn a lot.
This professor was great, although he is one of the first college professors I have ever had. I learned a lot in his class, and I'm a big fan of learning. I might be biased because I love to be challenged, but he seemed like a really good professor to me.
HONORS MATH 5A IS NOT CALCULUS DON'T BE FOOLED. full disclosure i dropped after the first two weeks, during which he lectured exclusively about abstract algebra topics (set theory, topology). Gave a lot of misc extra reading and basically expected you to teach yourself from the textbook and do all the hw on your own time. heed the other reviews too
took him for the fall 2024 sem honors class (it was a refresher course so i do not get any credit for it). honestly, he's a great guy and loves math/physics but i feel that he's better suited to teach upper level courses. unless you've already taken this class/know the material, go for another prof cause he teaches ADVANCED topics. lots of ec tho!
Professor Sepikas was a great professor. He's very knowledgeable about what he teaches and comes to class everyday with genuine enthusiasm. He also offers a lot of extra credit for people who participate and know history facts about mathematicians. I highly recommend you take advantage of this, as his class can be somewhat difficult.
Professor Sepikas is a tough grader and isn't clear about his grading system. The readings he assigns are full of typos and the links he has to videos don't work. As someone who was returning for a graduate school prerequisite this is by far the worst class I have ever been enrolled in from all 40+ college courses I've taken.
Many topics that are covered throught quizzes and exams had many miscellaneous questions that had little to do with the topic and more about the history of the subject and the theories around them. There was also a lot of homework that would have to cover entire units due in a time that would make it difficult if you have other things to do too.
the homework is not required, it is more for you to study. But its more like a waste of time. He has assignments that are based on coding, miss one and -5%, and tests he assigns barley even use calculus. The questions on tests ask more about theories and the history of calculus, physics or chemistry. No lectures , just provides old Youtube vids.
Please don't take this teacher. He doesn't teach at all, and through this whole semester, I have been so confused. I have to teach myself the majority of the material, but still not enough for the information on the test. The videos barely help and are only a fraction of the work you need for the work. This class is confusing and useless.
I took it because I want the honors credits. Do not take it if you do not love STEM classes. His tests are easy if you pay 100% attention to his lectures. His lectures encompass a wealth of basic physics knowledge. Additionally, you have to memorize the history of five to ten mathematicians to get full points on the first question of the test.
Professor Sepikas is the best math teacher I've ever had. The material was challenging, but he was really understanding. As long as you study, you should be fine. All of his tests cover the exact examples he goes over in class. He really cares about his students and wants to make sure you do well in your next classes.
Genuinely what the heck is going on. It feels like a scam to come get you back to do his class. I try to learn but it makes no sense at all unless you previously know the material before hand. If you know nothing about this previously or not confident. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He's okay just not for me.
terrible exams that are mostly unrelated to material, some questions are straight up just from other disciplines that arent math. all tests were online and the final was in person but he wasnt even there for it and was still on canvas. definitely would not recommend
I had the best time in Dr. Sepikas' class! First week, he heavily emphasized that his class is for those focused on STEM, as he conducts his class at a university level. Ideal if you love science/math. Def not for students that are trying to skate by. With his help, your math game will be strong. He def prepared me well!
took the summer 6 week session, terribly managed course. All assignments pushed to the last 3 weeks of the course and no clear pacing. Have to memorize random physics topics and historical figures, not appropriate in a crunched summer course. Added videos are useless. In person final. Textbook hidden in announcements tab. Do not take this class.
I like his tone for teaching. He knows tons of mathematical concepts and are enthusiastic about the lecture. If you are a stem major and want to learn math, take his course as much as you can. You will receive strict training like redo his proof of Maxwell equation on the test, but you will find his lecture extremely useful in your future study.
This was not a calculus class. Almost every question on the test is not about the actual math but is about a mathematician/person, a theory, a proof, a reading from the Feynman Lectures, or etc. No words can explain how difficult and stress inducing this class is. This is coming from someone who has taken ap calc ab and A LOT of aps.
This guy is terrible. I took his online course and he does nothing to prepare you for tests. Only reading about physics and old youtube videos about humanitarians. His classwork has nothing to do with the material because its all about coding. Don't take this class.
Yall 77 people who did 5 stars, stop lying. I took his online class and It was terrible. I signed up for a calc class and after being here for a semester, am I taking physics or comp sci. nothing prepares u for tests or exams. Everytime I looked at the test it makes me second guess my life. pls dont take for sake of sanity
I didn't know what I signed up for when enrolling in this class. I thought it was going to be elementary calculus, however it has felt far from it.The suggested homework problems that are supposed to prepare us for the test, don't even come close to the questions being asked.Tests are super hard and are full of proofs, doesn't feel like basic calc.
If you don't plan on transferring, take this class. This professor singlehandedly made me question if I should switch majors. This is not calculus, it is a course about physics, historical figures, and chemistry. I know I was desperate but if I could travel back in time I would slap myself as many times as I need to and choose another prof.
Class was fully online, but the convenience of online is not worth it. There are 3 tests that are all EXTREMELY difficult. They are proof-heavy mixed with physics and informal explanations of concepts. He drops the lowest test score. Saving grace is final is easier than the tests and was mostly computing integrals with a few reused test questions.
