Shadwick is a good professor. He really seems to enjoy the subject and his lectures are somewhat entertaining. The exams are what really make the class difficult. They are application heavy, so you really have to know how a concept works if you want to do well. Exams are 75% of the grade so if you don't do well on one there is not much wiggle room.
Shadwick is a nice guy but honestly one of the worst professors i've ever had. If you go to his office hours he won't help you, honestly the only way to do good in this class is to study for it 24/7 EAT. SLEEP. BREATHE. FRESHMAN BIO-and honestly who wants to do that I'd much rather spend my Saturday trashed at a SNU pre-game. RIP 2 my nursing degre
Mr. Shadwick is enthusiastic and a GREAT professor. He gives you a chapter review which tells you the info to highlight from each chapter. If you show up to class, do the homework, and actually take on hour of your "precious" time to go through the chapter and find what he is looking for you WILL make an A, and actually STUDY you will make an A.
Hes honestly not as bad as people made him out to be. He is energetic and nice. He knows his information pretty well the only issue is there is a LOT of information you have to know. So if you study the quizzes take notes and read the book you will get an A. Also look at quizlets it helps tremendously
Shadwick is a great teacher who you can tell really cares about the subject he is teaching. People give him a hard time because it is a difficult class, lots of information. Take notes on all the lectures, he likes to pull from them a lot. Also attend the review sessions. ALWAYS do the learn smarts and quizzes! He is always in his office for help!
He's a nice guy overall, but his tests are way too difficult. The information isn't that hard, but the way he words stuff makes it challenging.
Mr. Shadwick was a great instructor. He is very interested in biology and he loves answering questions in class. I highly recommend taking the SI and doing ALL homework. Definitely study concepts for tests, which were fairly difficult, and all vocab.
Professor Shadwick does not get enough credit. He is a very good professor and has a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subject. It is very rare to come across a professor that looks forward to coming and teaching students EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Those that say how "horrible" and "hard" he is are the ones not coming to class or putting in the work.
He is a really passionate teacher. I had a hard time narrowing down what I needed to read in class until he sent an email (1 month before the end of the class) that you need to focus on the Learning Outcomes for each chapter. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!! I raised my test grade 15% by doing this! Wish I had known sooner. Great teacher.
Shadwick is a great person, but his class is WAY too hard. I have studied for hours upon hours, attended class, and still can't seem to do well on his tests. He tries to make lectures interesting but it is like he expects everyone to be a biology genius like he is. Like I said, great guy, but would not recommend this class to even my worst enemy.
Mr. Shadwick is my favorite professor so far. This is one of the only lectures that I enjoy attending. However, your grade is mainly dependent on tests which are pretty hard. Homework also takes a while.
Hard subject in general, so it isn't easy to be an easy professor. He gives opportunities to raise your grade other than the tests, but it's still pretty hard. You can miss 3 classes without losing points.
Shadwick is a great professor, and person. Yes the material is challenging, but what did you expect yah know? You need to work hard in this class to get an A, but he is always there to help explain things. If you put in the work, read and answer the learning concepts for each chapter, there's not reason you shouldnt get an A
John is very passionate about the subject. He keeps class interesting, and is available to talk to before and after class, as well as during office hours. However, his tests are very difficult. His tests do not align with his curriculum, and there are often several typos. Most students do not pass his tests.
This class was the most challenging class I have had thus far. I put in numerous amount of hours reading the text and trying to study, but his tests are extremely difficult. Shadwick is a very nice guy and was always willing to meet with me and figure out where I need to go next, but the class overall is just very challenging.
Prof. Shadwick is not at all as difficult as people make him out to be. People treat the class like any intro class, when he expects them to try a little harder and do basic things like... read... study... and go to class... things everyone should be doing anyway! If you put in the time, your grade will show that effort. So... TRY!!! Youll be fine
The grading scale for this class is ridiculous. With how many points everything is worth, it's difficult to make your grade better if you screw up, so don't. Each question in the tests is worth 10 points, so if you miss a few, your grade starts dropping fast, and tests are a huge part of overall grade. Go to all the S.I. review sessions you can.
I felt the class was made overly complicated for a freshman biology class. Don't think this class will be an easy A; this class took up more time than my 3 engineering classes and Diff EQ. There's a TON of memorization, reading, and comprehension required to do well, so don't fall behind. He does give some extra credit throughout the semester.
He really cares about his students a lot. The tests make up the majority of the points but if you study a lot and actually READ THE TEXTBOOK they're really easy and the questions are pretty straightforward. There are also quizzes and assignments that you have to do after every chapter and that helps your grade too. I actually enjoyed this class
Show up to class to get all your participation points (it could result in a difference of a letter grade, trust me). The exam questions come from the book, quizzes and lecture. Simple material but lots of it. Also, make sure you complete ALL your learn smart, quizzes & extra credit, super easy points.
A lot of people really dislike Shadwick but he was one of my favorite professors. His lectures are very detailed and he makes the information easy to understand. Show up to class and take good notes over his power points. Also review sessions are a HUGE help. I honestly hardly ever studied and got an A. This is one of the easier science classes.
Great professor, the course is very dense
DO NOT TAKE THIS. If you don't like science, just don't do it. I tried so hard, went to tutoring, SI, and even his office hours. It didn't help. You teach yourself. He is nice, and he will help outside of class, but it seems he is more interested in his slime mold research. :/
avoid this class if he's teaching it. he has no idea how to tech.
I loved him. I know a lot of people didn't enjoy his class as they got bad grades, but I didn't get the best grade and still loved his class. He is funny and enjoyable to listen to. As long as you keep up with the homework, ATTEND class, and make sure you read the chapters, it's not that difficult of a class. Trust me, he wants you to pass too:)
Great guy, funny, and clearly passionate. His lectures are very detailed and he tries his best to explain things thoroughly and always asks if anyone has any questions. My biggest struggle with this class is the insane grading scale. Each exam is 500 points. Come to class for participation points, do the assignments, and go to SI sessions.
Shadwick is a very funny guy but he is not the best teacher. I enjoyed listening to him most of the time however, he didn't explain the information the best & often read off of the powerpoint. He does take attendance every day so if you attend, study, & read all of the chapters assigned you should make a B or higher.
You have to do the work, you have to do the chapters. Review the quizzes review the learning objectives, go to S.I. Review sessions and take notes during his lectures. He gives specific examples about disorders or processes that are on the exam so pay attention don't just go and sleep. He's funny he will help and slow down if needed, ask questions!
He provides a chapter outline. If you go through the chapter & look for everything in the outline you will be prepared for the exam. Some of the exam questions are straight from the hmwk. I made an A on every single one. Everything is simple memorization, no trick questions. You wouldn't even need a professor to teach you if you read properly.
The lectures and homework assignments are easy to understand, but the test questions do not line up with the materials taught. I study weeks in advance and still struggle on the tests, which make up a large portion of the overall grade.
There is a lot of homework, check every week so you don't miss anything. Make sure to study for the tests because there is a lot of material on there and you won't be able to get a good grade without paying attention.
Mr. Shadwick is a real goofy guy, but he makes lecture a lot easier to sit through. He does take a lot of attendance points, but I have missed his class a few times and my grade hasnt been affected (he gives bonus attendance at end of year to make up). As long as you read all of the chapters and study using the LOs he gives, the tests are easier.
Many people don't like Shadwick and I didn't understand. He's available for appointments outside of class for questions, he's very clear about what needs to be turned in and by when. There is a consistent amount of work but as long as you go to class, stay on top of your smartbook assignments and check your email and do the quizzes you'll be fine.
John is a super friendly guy that was always enthusiastic about what he was lecturing. The workload was not too bad. We had quizzes every now and then & had a Smartbook assignment or two due every Sunday night. While attendance isn't mandatory, it's best that you go to get you clicker points. These are useful considering every exam is 500 pts.
Shadwick is an amazing professor. A lot of students tend to hate on him because of their grade in the class, but in reality that's their fault not his for grades TEA. He gives you all the material you need for the test (ALL from lectures) and is open to questions anytime. If you go to class, do all the assignments, and study you will do great!
He's a good professor, and I can tell he truly enjoys biology. You have to go to class because he will talk about certain examples that sometimes won't be in the book and there will be about 3 questions on the test over them. I studied for many hours every week for this class. It was tough and his tests are hard and are weighted very heavy.
Hardest bio class of my life. The guy is very nice but does not know how to teach. He just reads off the slides & then youre all on your own. If you want an A, be prepared to have literally no life. You will have to eat, sleep, and breathe Bio for a good grade.
His lectures are long. He replies late to emails or does not reply at all. You have to teach yourself sometimes using his notes and the smartbooks. Smartbooks are your best friend.
This class was my most challenging course this semester. The tests are very difficult and require days of preparation, and even then its almost impossible to get an A on them. Show up to the lectures even if you don't feel like it. Hard grader.
Shadwick is a really nice guy and I like him as a person but not a teacher. His lectures are straight from the book and its test are very hard. They go into way more detail than the lectures so you have to do the reading.
Shadwick gives you everything you need to be successful in his class. Go to class and get the attendance points. You also need to be on top of your homework and make sure you do not miss anything. This class is really not that hard as long as you know how to study and understand everything you need to know. Use the learning outcomes.
You have to stay on top of your weekly homework assignments and quizzes. They are easy enough and easy grade boost if you do well on all of them. The exams are difficult, but if you study for a few days, make some flashcards of whatever, you should do okay. Just put in effort. Lectures can be boring, but he does a good job at keeping you engaged.
I didn't take notes in class because sometimes they didn't match up to what was asked on tests. I made either A's or B's on the tests if I read the chapters assigned. I would know some examples, identify pics from textbook, etc. Do all your online homework, extra credit, and quizzes! Just go to class to get the points.
People give Shadwick a bad rep, but its because they don't put in the work. College is hard and you have to go to class and study the extra mile. Shadwick is a good professor, his lectures are very accurate to the test material, and his online quizzes usually have exact questions that will be on the test. Interesting class, good prof, no complaints
I have never disliked a professor more in my life. He makes the tests way more difficult than they need to be for a basic freshman biology. Oh and he doesn't care about YOU, his office hours are useless and he gives almost no extra credit. After reading the book and memorizing his lecture notes, I still did not receive A's. I was .3 away from an A.
This class was hard, but Shadwick was an amazing teacher. The quizzes and exams were tough, but otherwise, the homework was helpful. During lectures, Shadwick would be very energetic and make the class interesting. He has amazing knowledge and seemed to be dedicated to making sure the students learned the content.
Good guy, good class
He's truly not a bad professor! I caught on to Shadwicks lesson plan "style" pretty quickly, he's also involved in the labs so can answer multiple questions on both sides and often mentions similarities we are learning in the lecture. I find it easier to copy what he says rather than the power point. theres alot of little assignment to boost grade.
I read the reviews before taking his class and I was so scared. If you do the learning objectives, your test grades should improve. He talked to me outside of class when I had questions as well. It is a hard class, but from my experience if you typically work hard and do well in school then youll do fine in this course. Read and go to lecture! :)
Professor Shadwick gets a bad rep. Fall 2019 the course layout changed, and it is MUCH better than before. Lectures are never boring and he always makes sure to make his powerpoints interactive. Read the smartbook highlights, focus on post chapter assignments, and you'll pass with flying colors.
POB isn't a hard class at all. The grading system is super forgiving, you can screw up a lot of assignments and even a test or two before it affects your grade. I relied on my knowledge from 10th grade biology to get through the first two tests without studying. Shadwick is a really nice guy, he's genuine, friendly, and willing to help.
Very nice man and makes lectures very interesting. Material is hard but he tries his best to help you understand.
Professor Shadwicks class is very possible to get an A in. I finished with .3 point off an A and he would not round my grade up because he claimed it wasnt fair, even though he canceled the entire final for the semester before because he didnt have time to grade them. He showed zero sympathy for students going through the corona virus pandemic.
I took Shadwick's class Fall 2019. His class consisted of a lot of reading and note-taking, but I didn't think his tests were hard at all. He gives two bonus questions each test and doesn't ask anything super specific. My biggest advice would be to go over your notes a chapter per day before the exam, and you'll do great! He's also really caring.
Professor Shadwick is a good professor, but he teaches a freshman class as if they are all Bio majors. Tough freshman class but if you attend class, take notes and study hard you can pass, just be VERY diligent. My biggest issue is that this class was so demanding for a freshman class that it essentially took up my whole semester.
The grade you get is reflective of you, not shadwick. Show him your trying, go to his office hours before exams. I did, my exam grades went from a low B to high A's when I did. He also was super caring and gave me the opportunity to take an exam a week late because I had 5 exams in one week and he didn't want that to hinder my grade.
I took AP bio in highschool and this class was harder than that. His tests are worth like 500 points and are normally super specific. The tests and homework correspond with the textbook pretty heavily. He asks several clicker questions during class so that even if you show up and leave you cannot get all your points.
Put in the work and you'll get an A, but when i say work I MEAN WORK. Covid made me take it online and I haven't finished the class yet, but if you're a freshman taking this class good luck. I advice you to just go to a community college and take a bio credit there. never been more stressed out from a class. There is way too much information
He doesn't know how to teach. A lot of the material you have to self teach yourself, its hard to keep up with him, this is definitely not an easy class, I recommend taking it in the summer so it can be your main focus because with all the work he assigns and with how hard his exams are there's no time to delegate time to studying.
If you take your notes off of the homework you'll be fine. Tests are multiple choice and follow homeworks very closely. If you don't do the homework, don't go to class, and don't actually try to understand the material you'll fail. He does NOT curve. If you do you should be able to get through the tests in 10 minutes and gets A's every time.
Not respectful when it comes to emailing him, and not open to talk about raising wanting to raise your grade in a nice way as most teachers.
Shadwick is an incredible professor. I loved watching his lectures. He explains things clearly and makes things relatable and easily understood. His tests are hard. Lots of students complain that the class is hard but those are the students who tend to give little effort. It is all about the effort you put in. Study and you'll easily do well!
Shadwick isn't as bad of a professor as everyone says. I took this class remotely, and he made everything pretty straight forward. Be prepared to study for tests. You cannot pass these tests by doing the bare minimum. Tests are not open note, so study the second you get the material.
Shadwick is not that bad as everyone says he is. Yes, you do have to work and study for the tests. If you watch the lecture notes, read your book, and do any extra credit you can. You should get an A or B. He is very straight forward. Don't procrastinate studying.
Shadwick has been a really good teacher although we have never had to meet during class because it is online. This class is hard if you do not do your part to study and take notes. Be aware of test dates and study two weeks ahead atleast and you should be good. Packbacks during this class are so stupid. If you take this class you got it, just study
I was in the remote class and attendance was not mandatory on zoom at all. There were 3-10 lecture videos each week. There were four tests that were worth 500 points each, and they were extremely difficult and packed full of material.
Professor Shadwick is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. This course just has a lot of material to be covered that can be tough to understand, but there are a lot of resources in order to come out with an A or B. His lectures are helpful, and I swore by the review sessions when studying for the tests. It just takes a little bit of effort.
Dr. Shadwick is a great guy and really wants you to pass, you just have to put in the effort. His lectures can be lengthy but your attendance is mandatory. Read the text book, and do the chapter quizzes assigned and you will pass the class. Also, attend the review sessions!
This class is not easy but its not impossible. Shadwick wants you to succeed and will help you but you have to put in the effort. Read and take good notes over the chapters/lectures, sign up for an SI, and dont procrastinate on studying and youll be fine. Good luck!
I hate to see how much hate Professor Shadwick gets. For my first semester, bio no doubt was a lot of work, but if your willing to put in the time and effort, you will totally do well. Professor Shadwick also has been extremely caring and kind during covid, and seems to genuinely care for his students.
Mr. Shadwick isnt as bad as everyone says he is. Hes genuinely a very nice and caring person and he means well. You just have to be willing to put forth the effort to learn the material. SI for this class will definitely help you.
This class is NOT impossible - that being said, you will need to study almost every single day for this class in depth to pass with an A or B. start studying for exams WAY ahead, study everything meticulously, do NOT miss any assignments, and you will do well. mid effort will not get you the grade you desire in this class, only perfectionism
Professor Shadwick does a great job with keeping his lectures interesting, and being clear-cut with what all is on his exams. However, the lectures are REALLY lengthy, and by that I mean youll spend about 2-4 hours watching lecture videos per week. But its worth the time spent, and the exams arent hard as long as you study. I passed with an A
I took this class entirely online in Fall 2020. Professor Shadwick is really nice, but this class is definitely strenuous if you're a busy student without much free time. There is a LOT of material to cover, but if you read the textbook and USE THE SMARTBOOK QUESTIONS you'll do just fine. He also curved a few exams and offered extra credit.
Shadwick is fantastic! He made biology so much fun! I would take him again in a heart beat! His lectures were great, and he is true gem!
You have to read the textbook and memorize a lot. His lecture videos are very lengthy. His exams were okay in that most of the questions were the chapter hw questions. You still have to study and memorize a lot of things for his exams. The review sessions helped a lot so I would join them. He does curve exams if the average is below a C.
This class was my hardest class last semester, everyone I knew in it struggled. The tests are nothing like the lectures, I recommend doing the Smartbox textbook questions. You have to be willing to put in many hours a week for this class, also make sure you start studying for tests far in advance.
If you work hard in this class, you will get an A. I would take notes from the textbook and from his lecture videos. Exams are not as hard as you would think they would be. All I did to study was answer the learning objectives that he provides and study off of that. I also attended SI review before exams and it helped me understand topics better.
This was the hardest class I took last semester, his tests are so hard. They are nothing like the lecture notes at all. I think what you need to do is the Smart Book things from the textbook, but they aren't required. Try enrolling in Si and going to the review sessions. Good luck passing this class.
Shadwick gave so many resources to help understand the material that was on the test. His lectures were detailed, but I would advise using the posted learning outcomes and the book to study. He gives some extra credit, but your grade comes from weekly quizzes and the 4 test worth 500 points each.
He was horrible. The exams where impossible to study for you never knew what you were going to get, not super helpful when asking for help. Unless science comes easy to you I would not recommend him.
Shadwicks lectures do not prepare you for his exams. His exam questions aren't hard but he is impossible to figure out how to study for. The tests included so much information from different chapters. I would suggest not taking this course and taking it over the summer at your local community college.
Professor Shadwick is a really good teacher. He is very passionate about biology so his videos aren't boring. You need to take notes in his class and study them to get a good grade on his tests and quizzes. There's an online book with questions that come with the class that can be used to study for his tests if needed.
Mr. Shadwick is a nice teacher and will help you anytime you need it. However, his exams do not cover what he talks about in his online lectures. He wants you to know every single detail there is in the book and it shows in his exams. READ THE BOOK. I struggled very much in this class even with the extra points he gave everyone on every single exam
he truly cares for his students and is BEYOND fair with curves on exams. He is also very clear about what is on the exams, the only reason people struggle is a lack of effort. He is very fair and very available for help and questions.
Very intelligent, but simply not a good teacher.
Mr. Shadwick was a great professor in which he explains concepts in depth. His lectures are very content heavy, but he goes over everything for exams! He is also a great guy. You can contact him via phone, and he will pick up. Bio may not be that fun to people, but he makes it interesting. I would take him again if I could!!
I took POB with Shadwick in Fall 2020 (remote delivery bc of COVID), and he not only made biology easy, but also FUN! Don't let the negative reviews scare you... if you do the assignments and take notes during lecture, you shouldn't have a problem doing well in his class. Also, he is SUPER willing to meet outside of class to help! Would take again!
he was super nice, just hard in a pandemic you know
A little bit frustrating when he uploaded the entire semester in january, and overall didnt lecture very well. Very nice, lectures are boring and really have nothing to do with tests or homework.
Shaddy is obviously very passionate about what he teaches, I enjoyed the course a LOT. However, if you dont really understand the concepts inside and out, you likely wont do too well on exams. Im no bio whiz and havent taken a bio course before but I ended with an A because I studied hard for all of the unit exams. He wants to help you succeed!
This class was a super easy A if you just put in the time and effort. Shadwick said in his lectures what was to be expected on exams and made study guides and diagrams to study for each exam. I easily passed each exam with just a couple of hours cramming right before. Shadwick gives generous curves and is super kind and considerate.
Hes very engaging and always willing to help. The only downside is there is a lot of information to cover.
This class is exam heavy if you fail this exam you fail the class. The exams are practically in protégés because what you study is not on the test. He is multimillionaire. Nice guy but he is a biologist so he teaches but doesn't make sure you understand. Also there is 475 students in one class.
John Shadwick is an excellent biology teacher. The class is hard but if you work for it, you will pass. Reading the textbook is not enforced but it helps a lot. Most of the homework assignments are easy A's. It is important to study for multiple days for the test. If you put in the work and pay attention you will pass the class.
Very clear cut schedule so youll never be surprised about assignments. READ THE TEXTBOOK. As long as you do that and take notes to study for the test you will be fine. I recommend studying in 2 or 3 chapter chunks. His lectures help but his tests cover more in depth info about the textbook. Very enthusiastic professor. Offers extra credit too.
His exams are so content heavy and expects you to know everything front to back. Hes a good guy, but not the best teacher. I stayed struggling due to the fact that there was just so much information to cover and ultimately dropped the class. Save yourself the trouble and get a bio credit from community college.
If you are planning on taking Mr. Shadwicks class, be prepared to read A LOT, and to do A LOT of homework. If you want to pass, you HAVE to go to lecture, or atleased watch the recorded videos. There are 4 exams, each worth 500 points, and you will fail them if you do not watch lecture, and really understand the material!!! Proceed with caution.
Professor Shadwick is a great professor. All you have to do is ask for help. All of the ratings that are negative are complaining that the class is too hard and you need to know the material. If you cant get an A in this class you are just arent trying. Professor Shadwick gives many opportunities to do well, it's your fault if you do not.
This class is very lecture heavy and notes are very important. There are weekly assignments and he gives a few extra credit opportunities worth a lot of points. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you are not going to go you need to make sure to still take notes and anything said in lecture is going to be on the test so it is best to go.
Shadwick is a phenomenal lecturer. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but the way he speaks about Biology is passionate and exciting. He's extremely caring of other students, happy to share supplemental podcasts and books about lecture topics. Course material itself is quite challenging and memorization heavy, but is very doable as long as you study.
Professor Shadwick is very passionate about what he does. Theres not a ton of homework but it is test heavy so make sure to study for those. The review sessions before test are really helpful. He is nice and is always willing to help.
He is truly the best! He really wants you to succeed in bio. 10/10 recomend this guy. he gets alot of hate but its from people who dont do their work or go to class. He offers so much extra credit you could fail a test and recover your grade so easy. LOVE PROF. SCHADWICK
Professor Shadwick is honestly a good professor. He makes his tests all from the lectures. He is caring and he does his best at teaching. Just go to class and make time for homework. The bad reviews are probably students that are not used to the amount of workload.
This class really is not as hard as it seems. If you stay on top of your assignments an A is achievable. Reading the textbook helps a lot and there is a lot of extra credit opportunities.
No papers, tests were all multiple choice. Only 4 tests and the final is not cumulative. He cared about his topics and his students and was always available for help. He offered extra credit and lots of extra points. His lectures were great to take notes over, and followed the textbook perfectly. A great bio class!
Shadwick is an amazing biology professor. He is very knowledgeable about the subject as a whole along with specific topics. His lectures can be difficult to understand so I would definitely pick up an SI class. Tests and homework are a huge part of the grade, if you don't do well on those, good luck passing the class.
John isn't great at spelling which can be hard on exams. He's also not very straightforward about what exactly is on the exam. I would not recommend this class unless you love biology or have plenty of time to study for exams. The homework for this class was overwhelming. Three different assignments on three different websites every week at least.
If you put in the work for this class, you should be able to get an A. Your grade is mostly from the tests, which are 500 points each. I signed up for SI which was very helpful, since some of the material is very dense. Although attendance is not mandatory, I would recommend going to lectures because that is what the tests are based on.
Shadwick is a great professor. He is very thorough with his lectures. He does give quite a bit of outside work, but it is needed to prepare for the exams. Reading the textbook is crucial, also you need to go to class to pass. This was very challenging, as it should be. This is not a blow off class.
This class had many assignments that were mostly busywork. The exams were worth the most points, but extra credit opportunities and easy assignments helped. Shadwick's grading criteria is very clear, as the point system allows you to calculate your grade on your own.
Shadwick was an amazing professor who had great lectures. The class was challenging as expected, but if you put in the hard work you can get the grade you want. The exams are worth 500 points, but he gives lots of point opportunities to keep your grade up. If you do the homework and study hard then you will do great!
Shadwick is a phenomenal professor. The only thing that was rough about this class is the content. A lot of little details that are very important to know for the tests. Lots of little assignments - packback, smartbook, chapter questions, etc. Go to the lectures, do the little assignments, and read the textbook. If you do that, you'll be okay.
He is such an amazing teacher. You can see he has a passion for teaching. The material itself can be challenging but he is very good at answering any type of question you have.
I loved Shadwick's class! He kept the long lectures interesting with videos, pictures, and jokes. You definitely get out of this class what you put into it, so I think going to class and taking notes is important if you want an A.
Decent professor who makes lectures easy to get through. Smartbooks felt like busywork and never felt like I learned anything after doing them for an hour. Tests are easy if you go back over notes. Gives a decent amount of extra credit too. Overall perfectly fine professor for the class and not difficult at all if you put in any amount of effort.
Great professor for a hard topic. Professor Shadwick loves what he does and is shown by his lectures. If you put in the work Shadwick will work to help you succeed.
Shadwick reminded me of my high school biology teacher and I loved the class. Granted, I was already familiar with the material because I took AP Biology in high school, but the class was still fairly easy. All the assignments are straightforward and he has the blackboard notifications on to let you know if an assignment is due. Would take again!
UARK students, if any of you guys need to take this Biology class, find another professor or take it at a community college. Shadwick is a somewhat nice guy, and he can even be entertaining in his lectures. But let me just say the tests are IMPOSSIBLE, and that is where more than half of your grade comes from, since they are worth so many points.
I absolutely hated this class. I know that is a strong opinion, but he takes a complex subject like biology and does not explain it well at all. I think hes a good guy, but his class is boring and the tests are very difficult.
Majority of your grade is based off the exams which are so hard. Also theres so much homework
This class is tough but manageable. You have to be ready to put in the work. Read the book, do the homework, attend review sessions, and go to class!!!! If you pay attention and study you will be fine. Professor does a good job teaching the material, and offers a lot of extra credit to help grades. Do not let reviews scare you if you are motivated!
genuinely cares about his students and WILL help you if you ask. He really helped me when I went to office hours. Yes his tests are hard and the questions are phrased weird but if you take notes and actually show up to class you will pass. I failed 2/4 tests and passed with a B so there is hope. Just do ALL of the smart hook and quizzes to pass
definatly have to apply yourself and try to good in the class. no attendance taken but i started going in person after the first test. he makes it interesting and is very good at explaining and not just reading off slides. definatly take advantage of the chapter questions and learning objectives. slides and lecture videos are online as well.
Tests are ridiculous. On top of that almost your whole grade is reliant on them, and there are loads of busy work homework.
Mr. Shadwick is a really nice guy who seems to really care that his students do well. He always posts recorded lectures for every class and posts lots of resources to study before the test. Also he is very clear about what will be on the tests so his class is not hard or impossible, you just need to use your resources and know how to study.
Not an Enjoyable class, was thought like we are all going into the medical field. Tests are based on homework and textbook most of the class discussion is not on the test. :(
Good professor. Easy class if you show up and hurst read the textbook every week. Only about an hour of homework a week.
Shadwick is very smart in the subject of biology, but his class is based on your test scores, if you do bad on the tests its very hard to get your grade back up... schedule tutoring sessions and go to SI class and review days they will help you.
Amazing person, the content is just a lot
Shadwick is the most amazing professor ever. He helped me understand biology and he actually wanted to help me. He provides the book, office hours, helpful videos, SI class, and you can schedule your own tutoring. If you just go to class and study the material and basically just do the work you are supposed to do then you will be fine.
This class is full of homework and extremely hard tests. The study guides are good but then the test is worded in the worst way possible, set up to make you fail. You can skip lectures because they are recorded and put on Blackboard. I have a 64% currently but I would have a 92% if it wasn't for the test grades.
Shadwick is a nice professor who is pretty funny, but his class is heavily weighted on exams. If you don't do well on the exams, your grade will reflect that. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't go to class it will be very hard to understand the material. If you are willing to put the work in you should be fine. Don't expect it to be easy.
Professor Shadwick is very helpful and understanding. Every one of his lectures is posted on blackboard so you can watch and rewind when you need. Of course, biology isn't going to be easy and you're not going to do well if you don't study. The tests aren't hard if you study correctly I got a 97 and 100.5 on the last 2. Great teacher!
His lectures are good, test are average, and homework is low. love this class
Shadwick is a great guy. His tests aren't quite the same as the notes/study guides. I put so much time into studying for his exams and couldn't seem to get over a C on ANY test. He does offer a small amount of extra credit. Overall, it was disappointing to me that I couldn't get over a C in this class considering all the time I put into it.
Shadwick is an amazing professor and really gives his students so many opportunities to do great in his class. I got over a hundred because I took all the extra credit and did really good on his exams. Start studying at least a week in advance. Use the learning outcomes to study for the test because he writes all his tests base on them. so sweat!
Shadwick was the best professor I've had here. His blackboard page was extremely organized and he posted all content required for the class. I got a 108 in the class by studying the learning outcomes for each chapter and doing the extra credit. he is a good lecturer and is very passionate about the material and makes sure everyone understands
This class did not count towards my degree as I am a business student so I didn't try super hard. Tests are the only difficult thing. His lectures are engaging and he doesn't just read off the slides. He's a funny guy and is happy to answer questions. The averages on his tests usually aren't passing, so just make sure to study.
He is a great professor a lot of the work is online you honestly don't need to go if you just study really well for the tests beforehand and make sure you know the contents of class.
Professor Shadwick is an extremely good teacher. He cares about his students and gives every opportunity to improve. You will do well in the class if you attend it and listen, read the book, and ask for help when needed. I had to work very hard, but his lectures are very good and clear up things in the book that are confusing at first glance.
I absolutely LOVE this guy. He is so caring, funny, reasonable, and always willing to help you. Yes the class is hard, but it is biology. If you study in advance, go to class, and use all of your available resources it is easy to be successful. He is always willing to help you in office hours/appointment. It's not as bad as everyone makes it sound.
Shadwick was so good and genuinely a great professor! His class was difficult, but if you put in the time and effort you can do good. There are lots of reading assignments that are very time-consuming (as is the studying for this class), but his lectures are interesting and he posts all his slides and lectures, but I would not recommend skipping.
Dr. Shadwik is a nice man. The class however is quite hard. The majority of your grade is exams which makes it nearly impossible to pull up your grade if you do badly on one exam of the four exams.
Shadwick is an amazing teacher!! He is my favorite by far for so many reasons. He is funny, caring, and explains difficult material in easy ways to understand. Biology is very content heavy, but if you put in the work you can succeed. He also gives out a ton of extra credit!!
Professor Shadwick is fabulous! He is great a responding to his students even though he has thousands of them. He also gives ample extra credit & curves. He is super caring about his students and their mental health.
Shadwick was a tough professor. This class is needed to get into Nursing school and i barley passed. He's so sweet, but his tests are so hard. I studied FOR DAYS and still get D's. Just warning you, there's lots of homework, they take almost 2 hours depending on how long they are. Glad to be done.
Shadwick is an amazing instructor! Biology is a hard subject, so he lectures really fast, however he gives access to lecture slides used in class, so you can take extra notes on what you missed. The tests are a lot of memorization and require lots of studying, but if you do the other assignments, and attend SI you will do fine in the class.
Shadwick is an engaging lecturer and is also very easy to get in contact with if you need help. It's a hard class but I would definitely take a biology class from him again.
This class is a good intro to college and John makes it easier then it should be. Some people find it challenging but if you read and do review its really not bad.
This class is HARD but Shadwick is the sweetest, most caring teacher and he truly does have a deep understanding of biology. He offers a little bit of extra credit but grades are heavily dependent on the tests. Make sure to study the chapter questions and his slides for the tests. If you study A LOT the tests are doable and an A can be achieved!
Not much homework, and offers extra credit. Test heavy and isn't clear about what information will be on the test.
Very hard course. If it isn't required for your major, don't take it. So much studying is needed to even understand the concepts he talks about.
Professor Shadwick is such a fun guy to listen to in class, all his lectures are highly entertaining. His tests are pretty difficult but he gives you all the information you need to do well & even supplies a study guide along with example test questions. If you have difficulty with the course, just reach out, he's really nice.
Professor Shadwick is a great guy, super funny, and really passionate about biology. Unfortunately for him, I hate biology and am bored by it. I found his tests to be pretty difficult compared to the work outside of class, but this class was also not for my major so I didn't study as hard for it. If you like biology you could probably get an A.
This is an elective course, and it takes all of your time. If you need to focus on your major, it's just a waste of time. No study guide for the test; There is one but it barely relates to the test, it's more of a trick. Unless you love biology and want to distract from core classes do not take.
Professor Shadwick was most definitely my favorite professor that I had this semester. He is a very interesting guy who is willing to help his students and he loves biology. Biology is not the easiest class but he definitely made it bearable. Make sure to do the chapter questions and look over his lecture slides in order to do good on the exams!
This class is not difficult, but this is taken as a lot of people's first course with actual homework. If you do the work, attend the lectures, and at least try to read, you will do fine. He sends out a study guide that is usually a version of the test. His tests are in person, theres a homework assignment due about once every other week.
the exams are tough, exams make up 60% of your overall grade, and each homework assignment is only worth 4 points. He does offer extra credit assignments, but he does cap it at 50 points.
Lectures were irrelevant for the most part as long as you read the text book and follow the learning targets he provides, the exams will be easy. The readings can be time consuming but are key to success in this course. The homework called Smartbooks are pointless and the questions are nothing like what you will see on an exam.
Shadwick will tell you everything you need to know for the test in class. This class is obviously a lot of information to take in but if you start studying for the test early they are pretty easy. The chapter questions are very similar to the test so study those.
Basically a repeat of high school biology. If you go to lecture, he tells you everything that will be on the test. Overall a very easy course.
There was homework due twice a week. Took about an hour per assignment. Attendance was optional, but there was a zoom offered which was nice. Lots of extra credit offered at the end of the year,
Shadwick is literally amazing! You do have to put in effort and work to study for the exams, but I am going to be so real with y'all... I never went to lectures and still ended up with a B in the class. He zooms, records, and then posts all lectures. He cares for his students and curves tests, provides bonus, is lenient within reason, etc.
Mr. Shadwick was a consistent professor to say the least. His lectures were always very informing and even if his material was a bit hard to learn, he always provided resources for you to use.
Don't get me wrong, the topics in this class can be confusing, but Shadwick gives every material you need to succeed, from practice test questions to extra credit and curves. You just need to utilize those resources. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches and made biology a little less painful
Great professor! Definitely recommend taking this class! If you take good notes in class the exams will be easy!
Took this class as a junior. Easy course just have to read the textbook and work the chapter questions he post which are normally similar to the test questions. Great professor with great lectures that only 50 out of 450 in the class attend. Made the topic interesting.
One of the best professors I have had. I could have very well made an A but I didn't study efficiently and stopped going to lecture. Very engaging during lecture and is very knowledgeable. There isn't too much course work so put in time reviewing and fully understanding the material and you will be fine.
Shadwick is a really great guy and wants you to do well in this course. He makes lectures fun & it made showing up worth it even if attendance wasn't required. Yes, your grade is test-heavy but if you do the homework, use the review questions he provides, show up to class sometimes, and study a bit, you'll be just fine.
He is really good at what he does, he explains things really well, seems to be very welcoming and happy when I go ask him about something even if he will repeat himself and is very helpful. Exams are not that bad if you pay attention to his lecture and take notes. He also makes lectures interesting
Professor Shadwick is a phenomenal professor. Attendance is not mandatory and Shadwick's lectures are very similar to the book. You likely could choose one or the other and do fine. He provides a number of good resources and has convenient office hours. The biggest advantage is this is a man who gives tons of bonus.
He is such a good professor, especially with such a big class. There are so many opportunities for extra credit and he has review times for tests that help so much. The chapter reading takes about 3 hours each and we have 2 a week which can be overwhelming. He is approachable and fun to talk to, so don't be afraid to ask questions.
Im a freshman nursing major and I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to handle the science classes here. I hadn't taken biology since freshman year of high school, so I was nervous. However, Shadwick is a nice, funny guy and a good professor. TONS of extra credit opportunities, and all of the homework is completion grades just time consuming
Shadwick is a great professor especially for how big is classes are. You need to be able to talk to him if you have questions which he gives a lot of time to do both in class and office hours. He pretty much gets 80% of the exam questions off of his post chapter questions on blackboard so just study those & memorize diagrams and you will do great.
This class was awful. I could never get ahold of him via email if I had a question. I'm a A or high B student and am barley passing this class. SO much material you don't know what to study or what is going to be on exams.I studied every day for weeks leading up to exams and still failed them. He has to curve tests just to make the average passing.
Shadwick is a great professor! He cracks lots of jokes, posts study guides for each exam, and gets a majority of the exam questions from the chapter questions! Memorization is a big part of most of the exams and the content is difficult, but he explains everything in great detail and is willing to answer any questions. I definitely recommend him!
I took this class first semester of freshman year, very hard class. Put in a lot of study hours but if you work hard your grade will reflect it. It is quite literally impossible to study for exams- you just have to know every concept and be able to apply it :(
Shadwick is great and his lectures are good. I only came on here to say that there is a LOT of reading and homework in this course, in a week you might have 2-3 chapters all with like 50-120 questions to go along with each of them. My advice to get an A is to go to SI and review chapter questions and slides! Shadwick offers a lot of extra credit.
He's very passionate about his teaching and a nice guy, but his teaching methods don't work for me. You're randomly assigned questions on the exam, which really ruins it. People who get the easy questions ruin the curve for people who are unlucky enough to get the hard questions. Every exam half of people seem to do well while the others fail.
Studied all 131 chapter questions so much that I knew them all by the back of my hand- still barely pulled out a D on the test. Was unlucky enough to get almost no chapter questions and instead apply ones (which DON'T have a study guide). People who get chapter questions on the exam are probably happy, but some were left behind feeling defeated.
Homework is easy but time consuming. Learned that some people in class get exams filled with the chapter questions he provides, and others get exams with apply your knowledge type questions that are really hard to prepare for. Homeworks don't prepare you for exams. If you don't understand a concept 100% highly recommend getting a tutor.
A very lively professor! While he did a lot of reading off slides, it was easy to stay engaged in his class, especially taking MWF classes. Utilize the chapter outcomes, chapter questions, and powerpoints. While you don't necessarily have to be in class, it does help! But you can also join the Zoom call.
This class is pretty easy. Just make sure you study the questions he posts on the bottom of each chapter that are on the blackboard, they are what most of the exam questions are. Lecture is recorded and posted online, but, just go to class. The smart book is not a good reflection of what is on the exam and going to class is...
I am not good at biology at all but Shadwick made it very easy to understand. Honestly probably one of the best people I have ever met. At a big University it is very hard to find professors that actually care about their students, and it is very clear that Shadwick does.
Mr. Shadwick was ok. His lectures didn't cover a lot of what was on the exams. The SmartBook assignments took too long to only be worth 4 points. This course is extremely exam heavy. Exams are worth 200 points each while SmartBooks are only worth 200 overall. There are extra credit questions on the exams and he curves sometimes.
Dr. Shadwick is a great professor, and one of my favorite teachers by far. He truly cares about his students and is very personable. It is exam heavy but he will curve the exams if the class average is low. He does not take attendance but if you go to class and do the practice questions you'll do well iin the class
The sweetest guy, and so caring. If you're not a science girly you may struggle but the lectures are fast-paced and the tests are tough! Smartbooks can be tedious, but they add up. Do the extra credit! Including SI. Also, think before you pick an SI instructor, maybe even look them up because some are better than others.
mr shadwick is a great professor and a great person , however, his class is incredibly difficult. be prepared to put a lot of work in. i failed the first time around
He was a great teacher! I would always schedule meetings with him to talk one on one. He was always so willing to help.
He is a great lecturer and offers a lot of extra credit. There's lots of homework, but it's super easy and the tests aren't that bad as long as you review.
Mr. Shadwick is an awesome professor. Lectures can be quite boring and I will admit I didn't pay attention at all, but he's still a very nice guy and helps as much as possible. Class itself is also super easy. The HW is easy, and the tests are also super straightforward and not hard at all to do well on. I would call the class a free A.
I enjoyed having Shadwick this year! His class can be tough, but an A is very attainable if you work for it. He provides numerous tools to help you better understand the information taught and is very willing to help. I highly recommend focusing on the learning outcomes when studying for an exam, DO NOT just study the chapter questions.
Shadwick was a great professor overall he is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he's teaching. The class is super test heavy and you can't save your grade with much extra credit or other assignments. He does give you a lot of good resources for test prep though. Lectures are boring and not mandatory. Go to SI!!!!
Genuinely wouldn't take this class with anyone else. He makes everything amazingly understandable. It is captivating how he explains things and his slides are great. Gives a lot of extra credit, which can be difficult because it's usually volunteering. Gives plenty of study material. Smartbooks aren't worth much grade but are key to understanding.
Grade is based mostly on tests. There are 4 tests, each worth 200 points. And worth the majority of your grade. SI is required and worth very few points in the long run. You must do about 2 smart books a week, which are 80 questions, and if you actually try and don't just look up answers takes 2 hours. In the end all of them are worth 80 points
Weekly smart books that can be time consuming. Very lecture heavy but if you take notes and study a couple days in advance the tests should be fine. He posts chapter questions that are similar to test questions also. He also posts extra credit that you need to do to help boost your grade. Really nice guy, but it is pretty challenging sometimes.
Shadwick was an amazing professor, it was always really interesting to go to his class, and even just to talk to him. His class is very difficult, it weaves out pre med/pharm/pt/nurs students. There were 1-2 readings per week around 3-4 hours per chapter. Your main grade comes from exams, which are 200 points and can be extremely difficult.
I am so grateful to have had Dr. Shadwick for principles of bio!! He is super kind and even though it is a big lecture, he made it feel very cozy and enjoyable. If you do the chapter questions before each test and go to class, you should be able to do well on his tests. You have to study but the tests were not super difficult.
Shadwick is a great and super kind professor. At times it felt like the lecture and exam content did not align. It can be hard to pay attention ( at least for me) because it is such a big class. Although, I loved Shadwick's energy and the passion he has for teaching. This was DIFFICULT class for me though.
His class is hard but he gives you a lot of materials to study and prepare with. Great guy, he is very understanding and clearly passionate about what he does
Shadwick is really an amazing person and professor. I will say his classes are very exam heavy so make sure to study. But he also provides lots of resources. My advice is to go to lecture, go to SI, do chapter questions, and go to the exam review session and you will be good. It's one of those classes you really have to apply yourself!
Prof. Shadwick is great! Attendance is not mandatory, but if you go to class and pay attention & do the homework, it is an easy A.
Personable guy but lectures do not necessarily cover what is on tests and sometimes go into rabbit hole topics that won't show up. Very little of my learning came from him, it came more from smartbooks, the textbook, and even SI. He does offer plenty of opportunities for extra credit but if you fill out the study guides, you will do fine on tests.
I loved Shadwick. But I will say biology is a very hard subject to teach, however he tries to make it as fun and interesting as possible. I would say go to your SI classes, go to office hours, and use the study questions he provides. Other than that take notes and go to class, thats the best way you can pass this class.
He was a really chill guy, but not very helpful. Took his class over the summer and it was entirely on the textbook. Like LITERALLY the lectures didn't matter. But he really cared about what he was teaching. Also i went after class to get help on an upcoming exam and he just told me what was gonna be on the exam. Thanks I guess?
Honestly not bad at all if you apply yourself you will do fine. Lots of friends failed but they barley put in effort. attendance is now mandatory but you can miss a few classes. great guy who obvisoly cares about what he does.
He's really nice and if you complete the assignments there's no problem getting an a.
Prof Shadwick is funny and very passionate about biology. I like him, but I HATE his class. It's just because biology is difficult and requires tons of study time. Almost your entire grade will come from exams but he has a couple of other ways to get points. This class was mandatory so just say a prayer and get through the semester.
very nice and funny. homework was never very helpful for me but took a long time to get done. I studied slides and chapter questions and made As on every test. lots of extra credit opportunities. occasionally curved tests
Manages to make the concepts interesting, it is obvious that he loves teaching and is passionate about biology. He also provides quite a few resources for studying for tests (study guides, videos, diagrams, etc.).
super caring and funny guy! very passionate about bio and probably the most interesting lecture class I've had so far. I mostly teach myself the material from reading the textbook and studying the slides, and I haven't done bad on anything yet. I think the material is pretty straight forward as long as you study.
nice guy, hard exams
Attendence is part of your grade but attending lectures rly is not that bad. He recordes all of his lectures and his study guides for the test are a pretty accurate representation of the test. Test are easy to pass if you just do the study guide and watch the lecture videos. He also gives out extra credit sometimes. Hes a funny and nice teacher.
Really a great guy and try's to make lectures interesting but you will have to teach yourself a lot in this class. There are extra credit opportunities and he wants you to pass but tests are hard. The lecture slides and quiz lets are your best friend.
Shadwick is a very nice and cool guy but you won't pass the class unless you go to lecture and study what was taught. That being said his whole lecture is just him reading straight off the PowerPoint so it's not super helpful. You won't do good in this class unless you study for yourself
Does take attendance, his class helps going to but read and pay attention to the homework!! It takes a while to get it done but if you want a good grade focus on the homework and study a head of time. Theres a lot of resources to help you out like mandatory tutoring and labs. And extra credit is available, just do it even if it sounds miserable!!
You can tell he really loves what he does, and he is a good teacher, but you do have to do a lot of studying outside class. His lectures are fully just reading off slides, and most of the content comes from the textbook. Tests can be hard, but go to the SI study session, they are one of the most helpful resources, and look at the concepts sheets.
Memorization heavy, but he's a great teacher!
His class is hard, but It is doable. As someone who is not good at science, if you put in the time and energy to study well and pay attention you can do well. He is a super nice guy and very understandable. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches and he loves plants. SHADDY FAN 4 LIFE
You HAVE to study for his class. The lectures have all of the info for the test but his wording on exams can be confusing. Study diagrams especially. He cares about what he teaches and is willing to walk through your exam after taking it so you know what you got wrong and why.
Mr. Shadwick was a amazing good teacher. He made the lectures very interesting. He gives out test guides and chapter questions for each test and half of the questions are the same ones on the test. He gives out 1-3 textbook assignment's out every week so watch out for those because he won't let you redo. So much extra credit given. 10/10 recommend.
Shadwick is a great professor who loves his job and wants his students to do well.
I really don't know why he has a 3.3, Mr. Shadwick is a great teacher, he explains everything with great detail and also makes sure to answer every question you have. He is very accesible and very nice overall, you can tell that he really cares about his students. If you're taking biology next semester I would totally recommend him 10/10!
Shadwick is a great teacher who obviously knows what he's talking about. If you put in some effort the class was easy and enjoyable. While there was a lot of homework a couple times, the course load wasn't bad.
Mr. Shadwick is funny, caring, and patient. This was my first science class at the University of Arkansas, and it inspired me to switch my major from Business to Biology. Attendance is mandatory for "clicker points". SI session is required but I found it very helpful for the class. LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Had to study quite a bit.
You get what you put in to this class. Go to class, actually do the smartbooks (dont cheat), go to office hours, go to SI, watch the exam reviews, and do the extra credit assignments. I personally did not find his lectures very helpful (only went for attendance points), but I relied heavily on SI and simply the textbook. Just put the effort in.
Professor Shadwick was so wonderful and genuinely cared about the students and class material despite this being a large lecture class. The class was relatively easy and only required the moderate amount of effort.
I would not take this class again. He is such a hard professor and the lab is so confusing
Shadwick is so genuine and wants you to succeed. Yes, the class is hard but that's not his fault. I learned a lot in lecture and make sure to actually read! The textbook is helpful. He gives chapter questions which help A LOT on exams. I never got below an A using them. Lots of extra credit opportunities. I would 100% take bio with him again.
Shadwick is an awesome teacher and overall guy. Super funny, totally loves his job and is SO passionate about slime molds lol. The course itself is difficult, you HAVE to apply yourself and studying is so important, Shadwick teaches great, it's just a lot of material and all memorization. Smartbooks are lengthy but helpful, SI helpful. Use reviews!
Professor Shadwick was great. He provides every resource to pass his exams, and overall class. He gives plenty of opportunities for bonus points, and truly wants you to learn. The homework can be kinda time consuming, but its worth it because you actually can learn from it. Attendance is mandatory which sucks, but it will help your grade in the end
Avoid his class unless you like studying new information not from class. Tests are massive covering way more material than what he teaches in class, which means you have to teach yourself most of the content. The smartbook assignments are a complete waste of time—they're irrelevant to the tests and don't help with understanding the material at all.
He's nice but his test are impossible. I studied so much and failed every test.
Lots of extra credit opportunities, Lectures cover most of what is one tests but doing the homework and going to SI is a must(for grading and for learning). Chadwick is very funny and tries really hard to make his lectures enjoyable while also trying to get through as much material as he can. Attendance and clicker points are important!
I really liked this class and the professor. He is very kind and is enthusiastic about what he teaches. There is a lot of studying needed in order to get an A in this class because the exams weigh a lot in your overall grade. Attendance isn't "necessary" but he does give out points for participation in lecture, which is a good help for your grade!
Shadwick is an amazing man and hilarious! Loved him, not his class. You definitely need to put in the work and this being my first semester at college taking this (and chem) I wasn't ready. If you study effectively then you'll do okay!
Do not take this class if you don't have to. The final exam average was a D. His lectures do not reflect what is on the tests and for an intro class, this class took way too much of my time. The assignments were busywork. The only time I asked him a question in-person he was rude and made me feel bad for asking a question at all.
Shadwick is a good professor and he does actually lay out what can be on the test and he's not hard to understand. Biology is a hard subject for people because it memorization heavy so it is understandable. But he also curves the test most of the time and there's a lot of extra credit options to help out with your grade.
Shadwick is very passionate about biology, so be prepared to study. It's not necessarily a hard class since there's many resources to pass and extra credit. His lecture slides and study guide match up with the test, just know that if it is on the lecture slide it's free game to be on the exam. Don't study last minute either
Better study, his class depends on the test, about 200/1200 of the total bio class dropped by midterm, do all the extra credit and study the materials given like the topic questions and study guide, the lecture is virtually irrelevant. Passive aggressive when you communicate one on one.
If you go to class and try it is not that hard of a class. Some people will be dramatic but if you even attempt to study a few nights before the exam you'll be fine. I quit showing up to class at the end of the semester because it was that easy.
He was an awesome teacher! He cared and it read through his lectures. He tried to connect with students and make his slides engaging. It was a challenging course, but he adds a curve to tests and makes study guides well in advance. He is a great teacher, and although it is a hard class, he makes it engaging and easier to retain. Huge fan of him!
Shadwick was great. He offered a lot of extra credit and although the exams were hard, if you listen and take notes and study all the materials he gives you, you will be just fine. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching which overall makes lecture more enjoyable!
I LOVE SHADDY DADDY. He's so funny and genuinely interested in what he teaches. His class did take some work, but it wasn't bad
hes a super nice guy but his tests were so so hard and you need to go to class if you want to get above the average test score of 65%. he does curve because everyone does bad but SI sessions helped me a lot just so much work goes into it and his tests are like the study guide but super specific questions and versions of them which makes its hard.
lectures did not reflect on tests
This class was not that bad, attendance is mandatory but his lectures did not matter. Just read the textbook and you will get an A. He is super lenient and there is so much extra credit opportunities that are so easy. He makes class interesting and is a fun lecturer but I wouldn't stress too much about listening.
Biology is a hard class but Shadwick makes it manageable. While the course is pretty test heavy, he gives lots of extra credit. Do the unit practice questions/ major concept sheet. they very similarly reflect what's on the actual tests. I never went to office hours and was fine without them, but I have friends who said they were helpful.
Shadwick is absolutely amazing. He's a very passionate and charismatic professor, even managing to make a biology class genuinely fun. I think this is the only science course I've ever taken that I've actually been able to pay attention in because he condenses information in an easy to understand and entertaining way.
5 exams throughout the course including the final, which is not cumulative just the last unit taken during finals week. rarely ever went to class bc he posts the lecture slides, which include all the info you need for exams. many ppl struggled with the class and complained about him, but it all depends on your effort and accountability. great guy!
Mr. Shadwick is a great teacher and his lectures aren't too boring. The course itself is hard, but he does his best to explain the material thoroughly. Make sure to take lots of notes and study well for the exams because this is a tough course. I definitely recommend going to office hours if you have any questions because he is willing to help you.
Super nice guy who cares a lot about his job and his students. Attendance is mandatory, but you really do not need to pay much attention to lectures because they don't directly reflect to the test. Tests were hard, but retakes are allowed for every test (except the final) You also can study your first test before your retake. Would take again!
Great Professor. Very passionate while teaching and just wants his students to learn. Helped me with my tests and any inconvenience. Amazing guy and very sweet teacher. Also does retakes but attendance is mandatory, but he gives lots of extra credits and last couple weeks of class are double points for attendance which is really nice.
If you go to class and take notes, you can get an A. His lectures are really interesting, and he always tries to make you laugh. The slide shows are extremely helpful, but take your own notes too.
Great prof, very passionate about what he does. I would say the class is pretty easy if you study and devote at least a little time to it. You get exam retakes which are almost exactly the same as the first time you take the exam. I always studied using the chapter questions and got As.
He is a great teacher. He is caring and tries his best to make content clear to students and he is also very understandable. Would definitely take this class again. I hated going to class because it is mandatory but once you go you actually enjoy it because he is funny and makes It very enjoyable.
Amazing prof. Those ppl who rated him low probably skipped lecture. just show up, do your work, and study. there are retakes you should utilize. test questions get reused also so study those too. easy a
Shadwick was a very good teacher and ready to help anyone in need of it. The class really wasn't that bad; as long as you do your work, show up to class, and study you should do fine. Definetly utilize the retakes though, those are super helpful.
Shadwick was an awesome professor overall. Your overall grade is greatly impacted by the exam scores. Completing all homework assignments and studying for exams is a must if you want to have a good grade. The exams aren't the easiest because they are so content-heavy and cover several units, but an A or B is definitely possible with studying.
Super nice and caring! Very obvious he cares about his students.
Shadwick is a caring professor but his class is so boring and it's hard to take notes. The exams are always 5 different chapters and very broad so it is impossible to study. He offers retakes which can be somewhat helpful but he averages the scores, so its hard to pass or make a higher grade. good luck if your taking this class.
He's so chill but his tests are hard. He is accessible outside of class but definitely make an appointment. also hes really funny. keep quote book easily accessible in his class.
He's a great teacher who truly cares about the subject and his students. Tests make up most of your grade and can be challenging, but if you study and keep up, you'll do fine. Weekly McGraw Hill assignments (50–70 questions) help you prepare, and there are four tests with retakes averaged.
Shadwick is the best. He is super funny and lighthearted in class. You have plenty of extra credit opportunities. Attendance is important, though, and he does give points for it. The exams aren't bad as long as you study and do your homework.
Great guy, horrible tests. If you're not a big test-taker like myself, good luck. I should've been studying for his tests in 2010 instead of learning my abc's.
Shadwick is genuinely such a funny professor. He clearly cares about his students and wants the best for them. Test-wise, bio isn't an easy course in general for people who have never taken bio before (me), so just study and use his learning concepts, and the tests are easy. He gives so many opportunities for extra credit, too! Very fun guy.
He is a really nice and caring professor. The homework is a lot. The test are VERY hard. You can retake the test for a combined average but it is difficult to have a passing test. His exams are a majority of your grade. He does give a lot of extra credit but even with extra credit many people don't pass. Just be prepared to study alot.
Great professor. He is funny and clearly enjoys teaching the class. The exams are not as bad as ppl say, they are all multiple choice or matching, just study the learning outcomes and you will pass. Dense lecture material but thats expected with bio. Definitely not a class you can just get by in, but if you put in time to study you will do good.
Shadwick is an excellent teacher and a great human being.
Good person, but exams are hard asf. He includes literally everything from every individual slide and covers way to much information.
a lot of memorization. get ready to study really far ahead of time. graded on test and smartbooks.
LOVE SHADWICK! He is such an amazing teacher for Principles of Bio. Attendance is mandatory, but he uses PointSolutions without location tracking, so you can type in the code from anywhere and get credit. He records his lectures and posts all of the slides so you can access it if you miss class. The textbook is free and online, participation grade.
I do not enjoy Biology but in this class it was tolerable. I really took advantage of office hours and it helped me tremendously. He is a great teacher and I would take this class again.
He is a nice guy and you can tell he cares about the subject which helps make lecture interesting. That being said, there is a reason SI is required. Exams cover a crazy amount of material and averages for each one are usually around 65%-75%. Difficult class for sure so you will need to take advantage of the extra credit he offers and do the work.
he makes it more difficult than it should be
Goated prof just show up bruh
Shadwick is a good professor but I found this class to be hard. The homework isn't bad, but studying for the exams is impossible. I studied for HOURS on each exam and was never able to do well. There are exam retakes, but be warned that exams are a huge part of your grade. It's also hard to know what material will actually be covered on the exam.
He's extremely smart, but often teaches beyond the course level. Tests include material he mentions only once in class or only in homework. Even with hard studying, I never scored above a 75%. Exams are 500 points with little to no curve, even when most students fail.
I would take any and every class he teaches. He is a reasonable guy and if you show up and actually make an effort he will help where he can. His office hours didn't work with my schedule, but I never had issues booking an appointment with him outside of those hours. I am a terrible test taker and still managed to maintain an a in his course.
Prof. Shadwick is hilarious and a great professor. However, his class is HARD. There's tons of info that could be on tests that it's almost impossible to study. Plus each test is 500 points. You do get test retakes so take advantage of that! other than that, he's a very smart person and he is a great teacher! I would definitely recommend his class!
Great teacher. Highly recommend, as long as you are willing to put in the effort you will have an easy A.
Really great professor even though this is a pretty hard class. There are multiple extra credit opportunities that can really boost your grade and going to class for participation points is really important. The tests can be kind of hard but as long as you study and actually pay attention in class and in SI you'll do good.
Nice and very smart guy, but tests are hard you get a retake after each exam which always helped my grade. Go to class, study, SI and you should be fine.
Shadwick is a great professor! He is very knowledgeable and kind. The class is very content-heavy, and the tests are moderately difficult. He does give extra credit sparingly throughout the semester. Attendance is mandatory, and my biggest tip is GO TO CLASS. He has so many kids, he rarely replies to emails, but just go after class or office hours.
He's a great guy and sometimes incredibly funny too. However, the exams, which are the majority of the grade, are needlessly hard. I studied a lot over notes, Quizlets, etc, and never got an A. Tbf he gives retakes, but it's an average of the retake + og exam score.I would stay awayif you don't like science, and have no prior knowledge of biology.
Shadwick in all honesty is an amazing professor. He cares about his students and wants them all to succeed. He knows his stuff and is very good at teaching it to his students.Attendance is 'mandatory' but he gives so many opportunities to make up if you miss. It is also easy to learn outside of class just requires lots of reading, time and effort.
never made a rating on a professor. very nice man, but class had me wanting to be sedated a few times. a ridiculous amount of material. cried when i realized no amount of time given to study would help me pass those exams. I attended every class/took notes. If you have to take this class like I did, strap in and cut off your social life. Godspeed.
he's a very nice, caring person, but he teaches the class in a way that simply didn't work for me. he knows his stuff for sure, but a lot of the stuff he was teaching was beyond the basic level. the tests are difficult and nearly impossible to study for. i would spend hours and still do poorly.
Great class.
He's a really great professor, but the exams are extremely had. 500 points each with a 1000 point final, and no curve. No matter how long you studied, the exams were really difficult.
Tests are hard but manageable if you study. Final was diabolical but the people who complain about him and his class are the people that dont study and expect to get an A.
Really kind professor, very forgiving, lots of extra credit available. Beware the 2nd exam and the final are very comprehensive and you'll need to have very good understanding of the concepts while studying in order to get a A on those exams- the others are fine as long as you study a bit. Shadwick is a great communicator, watch out for emails.
Shadwick was a kind and very open prof. He wants you to ask questions during lecture and doesn't mind it when you ask questions. But I will say get ready to study for the test as they cover alot of material do not wait for the last minute to start studying start when he announces when the test is coming up.
Shadwick is a great professor. Class is difficult however.
Shadwick is a very good professor and very knowledgeable in biology. sometimes in the lecture, he moves at a fast pace and it can be hard to understand so you really do have to put in the work outside of class to maintain an A. I ended with a 93 but it pays off so much to study. do ALL the extra credit- it adds so many points. retakes do them!!!
Professor Shadwick is a great professor. He knows his stuff and he is funny. However, his class is very hard. A majoringo of the grade is test scores and the test are beyond difficult. There really are not study reviews. He provides graphs but they are confusing. The mandatory discussion classes are a joke and a complete waste of time. Good luck!
Mr. Shadwick is a fantastic biology professor. He explains the different topics very well and is willing to do whatever he can to help you if you reach out. The tests are difficult, but if you study what he tells you to, you will get a decent grade. I 100% recommend him and would take any course he teaches.
Pay attention in class, take notes and study early and often and you'll be fine. Class wasn't hard, but if you have any questions, he is there to answer any questions you might have.
Shadwick is a super nice guy and his lectures are entertaining. He knows a lot and cares a lot about biology. His tests can seem difficult, but if you study the learning outcomes and go to SI, his class is easily passable.
