John is the man. He makes the material entertaining and relevant.
He's a pretty good professor. The class is relatively easy, and the lectures are interesting. (He gave us an in-class demonstration of how to make stone tools)
he's pretty witty but drops names like a mofo. helps to have a photographic memory. don't take for the DEC.
He's really cool and funny. I like him a lot. His class is pretty easy too.
John's a good guy, lectures are actually interesting with his stories.
He's pretty unprofessional and thinks he's funny by swearing a lot. I don't appreciate that and I don't think he's very interesting.
Dr. Shea makes class interesting and fun by showing some personality. He is very approachable and goes out of his way to help students understand the material.
He is a "cool" professor that likes to make sarcastic jokes and curse. He can be rude one on one depending on his mood but he teaches well.
really funny down to earth guy. makes lectures fun though recommend u go to class. if u do then it will be no problem for an A
Professor Shea is a great teacher and really interesting and funny. He's very approachable he'll go out of his way to help you. Definitely take his class
Prof. Shea is a really funny guy and a great professor. As long as you do the work and go to class, it's not a tough class. He likes to tell lots of stories and he likes to be funny. It makes class worth going to. His sense of humor is definately welcome in the morning!
SHEA is Awesome he has converted so many to the call of archaeology, how? by making it interesting! and he has kegs in lecture
he's really funny (sometimes corny, though) but interesting class and pretty easy tests. i enjoyed it.
cheesy but funny, good natured and easy going, interesting class
Dr. Shea is a pretty good professor, his class is entertaining and challenging. His notes are important and he is a brilliant researcher. He attended Harvard University for his MS/PhD (which is one thing that infuriates Dr. Arens and his inferiority/superiority complex) and he does well in incorporating geologic principles with paleo arch. Plus his videotape of his flintknapping thesis in enjoyable to watch. He has high expectations in his research paper assignments, so get your work preread and deliver.
Shea is the man!! he's understanding and flexible with things and dates (as long as u let me know ahead of time).. he's a funny character too with his funny, but sometimes corny jokes.. the only bad thing is that he doesn't post notes on blackboard which could be a pain in the ass if u miss class for a couple of days... i definitely reccomend him!!
Great Prof. Really knows how to teach and keeps the class interested. Just go to class. 99% of the exams are lecture based.
This class was pretty easy, slept through most of the lectures while I still went. The Revealing Archaeology stuff is mostly bs, if you actually listen to his lectures you'll do better. He often asks questions regarding some weird information he talked about in class. Overall, not a challenge if you have a brain.
besides the fact that he makes it hard for one to fail this class, great archaeological discovery was one of the most entertaining and informative classes i've taken at stony. the only thing that dissappointed me was that he spent alot of time on prehistory

One of the best professors at Stony Brook. Very approachable and helpful. I would let him date my sister.
He's a legend in his own mind.
Professor Shea is always in a good mood, and he always smiles. His tests are easy-- as long as you attend lectures. He is also really funny.
Shea is probably one of my favorite teachers at Stony. Very funny guy, knows what he's talking about and very enthusiastic about anthro! I have taken two of his classes, both were very easy if you attend lecture. Don't bother even buying the textbooks.
He is funny, and jokes a lot. He shares stories of his life which are hilarious most of the time. Sometimes curses, which is ok. I would highly recommended the calls (ANT 104) as a somewhat easy dec. Buy the cd as soon as possible and the test are a bit hard.

He is tough but in an encouraging way. He is corny but I laugh anyway. Hes acts like a well educated man but has only one point of view on topics and convinced that is the only thing that is right.. makes me mad but he means well.
A wonderful and funny professor, hes the best professor i had so far and im taking another course of his next semster. He has great stories to tell and its a pretty easy DEC f.
He is a very nice guy, sometimes he seems a little condescending, but he is just trying to get his point across. Go to class and take notes! Don't wait until the last minute to do the textbook, you will want to shoot yourself. He jokes are sometimes lame and he can be boring, but overall he is a pretty good professor.
I had Prof.Shea back in 1994-1995 for Anthro. Prof. Shea was an animated fellow, who without a doubt, had an inspiring love for his field. Now, 14 years later, I am teaching obsidian knapping to my family. Kudoos to Prof. Shea for being one of the few college profs who stood out in my mind and who passed along a thrill for education!
Fair, funny, makes passing easy as 1,2,3. really amusing but def thinks he's a legend in his own mind. A bit cocky and childish but proly the best anthro professor in the dept.
Intro to Arch is a pretty fair and easy class. The textbook is a CDROM that you have to complete by the end of the semester so pace yourself and try to stick to the approx guidelines. Take notes and remember key phrases, they tend to appear on the exams. Professor Shea is an amazing professor and really passionate.
Prof. Shea is a great teacher, he tells realyl funny stories and jokes around which helps keep interest for the class. His notes are detailed and there are many ket terms and people who could come up on a test. the 1st test was pretty tough.
Best teacher I've had. His lectures are engaging and keep your mind from wandering. Highly recommend him.
Such an awesome professor!! His lectures are really interesting and informative. He gives you examples from funny stories and his own experiences that you won't forget. The tests can be tough if you don't go to class, but since his class isn't boring it's not bad. There's no regular hw. I highly recommend this class:)
Prof. Shea is a funny guy but thats besides the point. This class can be boring if you hate the subject and amazing if you like it. Its a fairly easy class but completely based on numbers. That if your grades, so you must go to class and take excellent notes. If you mess up even one test your grade can kiss goodbye to that A. The textbook is easy.
Professor Shea is simply one of the best professors that I've ever had at Stony Brook. He's interesting, funny and makes the subject easily understandable and interesting.
A hilarious professor. does crazy skits every single class on stage, definitely knows the material, and tests on stuff he goes over in class. probably one of the best profs i've ever had. highly recommend him, easy A (with a bit of work), but awesome class.
He is a really funny Prof. he really seems passionate about archaeology. he can get rather boring from time to time but all in all i like the class (on days when i actually go to class) do the digital textbook work and you'll be fine
Extremely easy professor to take, loads of fun, cracks jokes very often. Only one midterm and it is easy if you study the lecture notes. Must do Revealing Archaeology to pass!
It was unnecessary to attend the class since his TAs post the note on blackboard. And the midterm and final are based on those notes. You do however have to complete a CD "homework" thing, which is very annoying and time consuming. Besides that, I would say it's an easy A.
Best class EVER.
Worse professor EVER. missing the deadline for just 2 hw's gets you an automatic B... only if you get 100s on the 2 midterms and final. Its an easy class, but his grading is a bit drastic...
You must remember to purchase the CDRom textbook, and to complete every hw before the deadline. Otherwise, you lost the majority of your grade without doing the hw. Has a big ego. Insists that he has "better things to do" always. Otherwise, attend lectures for notes to do well on exam. The TA is much more helpful than he is though.
Honestly this guy was really easy its just hard to stay awake in class because sometimes the material is really really boring but it is really easy all you have to do is study the TA's notes and on top of that the final is comprised of questions from the previous midterms word for word this guy is really cool too
His class USED to be an easy A, but NOW he changed up the way he grades things and got much harder. Taking organic chemistry calc and bio, THIS class killed my GPA. I dont recommend taking this class at all, unless you are an Anthropology major
I went into this class expecting an easy A to boost my GPA and ended up getting a B-. In the beginning of the semester he warns you that if you don't attend the lectures you'll do poorly on the test, so just go. I started skipping after doing really well on the first test and ended up bombing the second one. Attend class, lectures are interesting.
This class is really easy for DEC or for major. You just HAVE to attend lectures cause the TA notes will make no sense to you if you don't and try to study them. His stories are funny so just go. If you consider this class hard you have other problems. Final is same questions from 2 midterms plus a few new ones. Do all homeworks and on time!!!
I am not sure of his particular teaching style but he does A LOT of talking. No powerpoints, no review sheet, nothing. It's all on you to go to class & take the right notes. He also side tracks with his storytelling so it throws you off as to what's important and what isn't! Overall, just listen. In the end, I just hated this class.
This class is brutal. Do not take it for a DEC. The midterm is straight from the notes but the questions are worded in a way that you don't understand. No reviews, homework, 1 midterm, and a final. Cool guy but do not take this class unless you want a horrible GPA.
As long as you show up most of the time, it's impossible to do badly in this class. I'm taking it for a major, but it makes an easy DEC and he's usually pretty funny during lectures, though sometimes his jokes fall flat. Don't come up to him after class, it bugs him, but hes very helpful during office hours, and very excited about his work.
MUST do textbook cd hw, revealing archaeology. If he shows a movie or has special guests, pay attention - there will be test questions. Final includes passed midterm questions and new ones.
Professor Shea is really awesome and very knowledgeable about Archaeology. He demonstrated how to make stone tools in class and showed us videos. TAs took notes and the textbook/homework is a CD, so going to class is basically a review. STILL GO TO CLASS, THOUGH. Not an easy A, as the exams are pretty tricky if you don't put in the work and study.
pretty awesome teacher. very enthusiastic and interesting. definitely recommend this class and teacher for an easy dec F
He seems passionate about his work but BEWARE - this class is utterly BORING! Except for the one lecture where he makes stone tools... Other than that, utterly, utterly boring. The boring-ness of the class makes you not want to pay attention. I struggle to do so sometimes. Spend your DEC F somewhere else if you can.
HIs grading policy is unfair. The class average at the end of the course was a 68 which was a C-. The curve does not benefit those who do well at all. I have never heard of a 100-level course in which you need a 95 to get an A. His classes are extremely boring. No lectures up on blackboard just notes made by the TA's. Exams are hard and specific.
He's a great archaeologist and makes his class and lectures very fun and interesting! There's little homework and tests are fairly easy. Go to the lectures and pay attention and you'll get an A easily!
Shea's methods for teaching human origins are really awesome, you won't regret taking the class. He gives attendance checks on 100% randomly chosen dates - miss one and it's 3 points off your average. You get a take home quiz and the textbook is tiny and costs $5. As long as you go to class, you'll get all the material you need for the tests.
The midterm and final are the whole grade for the class besides the pointless homework that costs $75. It's a shame this class is a requirement for any type of anthropology major. He stresses that the tests are going to be on the most important material he covers in class, but puts random things he may have talked about for 2 seconds on the tests.
I love Professor Shea and he is so funny. He makes the lectures interesting. The only problem is the only grades of the class are a midterm , final, and some homework. the homework is easy but is not on the test at all. He tests only on things he talked about in class. He doesn't post his lectures so you HAVE to go to class.
He tests you on info he said for 2 seconds in class. Even if you rewatch the echo, I promise you will still miss "important" info for the exam. He's pretty funny though and is easily accessible in office hours.
Though this professor does care about his field, he has difficulty conveying his knowledge clearly to his students. The exams are not good representations of the coursework. There is little room for error because there are 9m/c and 2 short answers on most exams and the short answers are all or none. No homework, but you should come to lecture.
if i could give him a worse rating i would. i do not recommend taking this class if there is a way around it. his quizzes and tests are all short answer and does not give partial credit for answers that are kind of close. he also tests you on random information said during a lecture. if you miss something odds are he will test you about it.
Weekly quizzes contain obscure questions from information mentioned for about two seconds during class. Some quiz questions are based off of even more obscure assigned readings that are difficult to decipher for anyone that is not of an Anthropological background. I showed up to every lecture, studied hard, re-listened to Echos, yet still did bad.
This professor may have done lots of contributions in his field, but he is really bad at teaching class. I'm not ANT major, but I've been interested in archeaology for a long time. I choose this course to improve my GPA, but it turns out to drag my GPA from 4.0, which I spent lots of efforts to keep. My advice is that do not choose his class.
His class is so hard just for a 100 level class! Took him online this fall and I can not stand his grading policy! Would not recommend!
The course ANT104 revolves heavily around overtly-packed lecture-slides in which he skips by way too quickly, allowing no time for copying. Gives no chance for students to interact with the class other than occasional moments where he allows questions. Weekly tests and "interactive explorations" is a faulty, impersonal and lazy method of teaching.
I have no idea where all these 1 ratings are coming from. I think the lectures can get a bit monotonous if you're not super interested in archaeology, but most of the time he's funny and explains stuff well. You don't need to pay super close attention, just keep up with notes (take screenshots) and give good effort on the homework and quizzes.
Professor Shea is awesome and so is this class! Graded on 10 quizzes you could take as many times as you want so it's an easy A. You don't even have to show up, but I would cause the topics were really cool. He kept it interesting by always telling stories too. Class was fascinating, I highly recommend.
The class was really interesting in the beginning and laid a solid foundation for archaeology. It got really boring though in the end. The grading was based on textbook chapters and 10 quizzes you could take as much as you want until you get a 100 so nothing terribly difficult. I would take a class with Prof. Shea again as he was an awesome guy!
If I had a passion for Archaeology, he would've been a top choice for me. Professor Shea has enthusiasm and definitely takes pride in his work, which is why you should take this class if you have an interest in this field. In terms of grading, he can be somewhat strict on homework but for quizzes gives unlimited attempts so you can get 100s.
Ive taken a few classes with Dr. Shea and he cares a lot about his students. Email him? Hell get back to you shortly with extremely detailed replies. Interested in the field? Hell recommend you programs and extra things. Hes also funny, and left such a good impression I had to come back and write this review even though its been months.
From the few times that Ive had an interaction with this professor, they weren't pleasant. There was a time when I went up to him after class to ask him a question and he totally dismissed me and told me to talk to the other teacher. It was his attitude and the way he said it was what upset me and made me realize that he wasn't a good teacher
He is extremely passionate about anthropology, listening to him speak about it with such enthusiasm spreads his passion of the subject to others. Grades were made up of 10 quizzes, all of which were online with unlimited attempts and a week to do them. I only took this class to fufill an SBC, butI highly reccomend him if you are into anthropology
He tends to be all over the place when giving lectures, but his grading and homework was reasonable
Goes on a tangent. final too hard for a 100 class. majority of the class failed. please stay away. save yourself do yourself a favor please
He was better than Twiss but still terrible. He talked too much during lectures. The class was impossible to study for and there were too many readings. The class would've been interesting if it weren't for the professors.
The daily topics are very random and powerpoints are usually very dry. Didn't learn much about Archaeology at all. The weekly quizzes are very hard as the questions are vague and often not connected to the readings. The final was awful. It is super hard to study for it and the average was just above 50% for the test. Avoid if possible.
Dr.Shea def knows wht he's talking abt (as he is a top xpert in the field so expected). He'll make sure that you succeed as he is very attentive to giving good feedback and providing support. He cares abt his students outside of class time, I recommend attending office hours. Gives a lot of anecdotes, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.
His class was beyond hard. I took it for credit and I thought it might be interesting. I had not a clue what he was talking about in any class. You had to have background in archaeology to fully understand what he was saying. Tests were horrible and ridiculously tough. Quizzes every week on random things said in lectures.
Prof.Shea is an amazing prof he taught so well and clear and humorously. If you're interested in archaeology take his class. He cares about students. You'll get your expected grade if you pay attention to his classes, at least I did.
Ngl he's my fav prof this semester. Take his class y'all go take his class. Now.
Talks more about himself than the lecture material itself. Does not only create test questions according to the readings but also includes his personal life. If you take him I wouldn't recommend skipping any days; you might miss out on some information about his life he'll test you on later.
does not EVER actually teach the material for class, instead he goes on long winded tangents about his personal life that are typically quite controversial and uninteresting. He literally makes you get his own book as the text book lol. He does not respect women or poc, went to Harvard but teaches intro courses at a suny…..
Literally teaches stone tools and racism class. Completely useless class, I don't think he has ever actually taught the course material, but I know everything about his personal life! He really likes to talk about his time living in the Israeli occupation… worst professor I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with.
