Very good, though the tests were a bit confusing. Very approachable and has a GREAT grasp of the material. Highly recommended.
best prof at UT-Dal and a hottie
Best professor at UTD! If you have to take chemistry, make sure you choose Sibert.
Ok, Dr. Sibert is hot, I'll admit that, but I found this class unreasonably difficult. I had never taken a chemistry class and it seemed this class was taught at a level that expected students to already have a basic knowledge of the subject. I have heard he is the easiest chem professor though.
I took OCHEM with sibert this summer and wow its was really interesting! He is very knowledable and helpful. Although he's tests are hard since he has NO multiple choice ?'s, it forces u to learn. He isnt boring but u still have to work hard to get an A in that class! GOOD for Pre-Health
This is my first chemistry class and for that reason it's not easy but if you read your book and do the recommended homework, the tests are a breeze. Sibert is an unusually clear, helpful, and friendly professor, too. Highly recommended.
Totally awesome. This is a hard class, no matter who you get, so if you have problems it's probably not the prof's fault. Sibert is helpful, funny, and interesting. Just about the best professor I've ever had (or ever will). I had never taken a chemistry before in high school and had NO experience and I still made an A+ (I'm now a chem. major).
Interesting professor. With as much as Chem I & II are standardized throughout the sections (ie: everybody takes the same tests, at the same time), Sibert is probably your best bet. Offers tons of extra help for anybody that needs it. very accessible.
Good teacher looks like Mr. Smithers from the simpsons if u agree with me give me a hell yeah!!!
ok first of all... Dr Sibert is hot!! REALLY HOT! so ok, this is definitly i super hard class but hey its chemistry at UTD! Dr Sibert is def the best proffessor to take for chem though!
By far one of the best professors at UTD. He always knows what he is going to say in class, so his lectures are very coherent. The class isn't easy, but Dr. Sibert makes the material easier to understand and is always available for help. Also, his sense of humor makes lecture fun to go to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
great professor! very helpful!!!
Fantastic prof, I loved him. His class would probably be a little hard if you didn't have any kind of background in chemistry, but that's more the subject matter than the professor. He's very clear and concise, and a great lecturer. He also keeps things interesting for non chemistry majors, I think. Oh, and he's a hottie.
Dr.Sibert is the best of the best! He is interesting. You actually learn a lot from his lectures. If you have to take gen chem, it would be the best to take him. What can I say? He's awesome!
Sibert is an amazing professor. My Chem 1 and Chem 2 classes with him were extremely large but he kept class interesting and had a strict open-door policy that kept him constantly available whenever help was needed.
His lectures are interesting. Very funny and extremely good looking. His quizzes are easy but he doesn't make his own tests :( You'll learn a lot so try and keep up!
extremely professional in all aspects, and is willing to help anybody at his office or over an e-mail, until you have completely understood the material.
Very good speaker, lectures are interesting. ARIS sucks but thats not his fault, tests are multiple choice and very hard. Very willing to help and accessible. Took him for both semesters and learned alot.
His notes are easy to understand but you really need to read the chapters he assigns before hand because you'll get lost. Doing your homework is key and study with groups. I'm still taking his class and made a 92 on the first exam. just be sure to go to class!
Anyone who has written positive reviews for this class evidently had taken chem before the online Aris program. 1The online pre quizzes are terrible and sometimes vague. 2. You also have to show up to a computer lab to do another quiz that is supervised. 3. Exam material always seems to be more extensive than what is taught.4. This class sucks!!!
Dr. Sibert's class is relatively easy as long as you do the homework, ARIS quizzes on time, and listen to his lectures. I found it hard to sleep in his class during the most boring subject material because of his enthusiastic teaching style. I highly recommend him if you are taking other chemistry based classes.
Sibert is a good professor. If you are expecting a good grade by just going to the lectures, then it wont happen. You have to read the book, but Sibert does reinforce the material in the book, and he provides alternatives ways to understand the material. Hands down he is the best general chemistry professor.
Inorganic chem. hard.. extremely hard. I don't know how he could make it sound like so easy. I have graduated from UTD and I can say Dr.Siber ROCKS! He is the best professor I've ever had!! Everyone loves him so much, and his lectures are super fun that you'll never wanna miss a class. .=D
Amazing... in every way!
Nothing he teaches is ever on the test. His goal is to trick you. Completely useless lectures, don't bother going cause he wastes so much time talking about his favorite movies or his pet lizard. Worked so hard for nothing.
Don't expect to learn anything that will be on the test from Sibert. He has a way of making things sound easy, but when you actually try to apply it, the rules change and become increasingly difficult. I studied 2 hours a day, and about 4-6 hours a day 2 weeks before the exam and ended with a C. I know of no one who made an A. Try someone else.
Sibert was born to teach and he is so passionate about chemistry. This class is very well-structured for students to succeed. I studied on an almost daily basis for this class, and I got an A-. I highly recommend Sibert. Oh, and you MUST do the hwk to succeed on the exams.
Hes a hard teacher who doesn't tell you whats directly on the exam
Dr. Sibert makes all the lectures very interesting and you can tell he loves what he does. He doesn't need to tell you what is on the test because he already teaches so clearly. I didn't even have to read to book to understand him or be prepared for the exams
Knows how to teach. Uses real world examples to help you understand. On top of that, he scientifically breaks down whatever he is teaching and makes it so easy to understand things inside and out. Love this guy! Chem is hard, but read book and do hw, before class would be awesome, and talk to sibert. He wants to talk to his students! Great prof!
I had Dr. Sibert for Gen Chem 1 and 2 both. GO TO CLASS!! that is the biggest must! he is an amazing lecturer, you will ace the class if you attend and READ READ READ the textbook! I made a B in both 1 & 2 but could easily have been an A if i had attended classes. this is a class you have to keep up with, dont study the night before the test!
Dr. Sibert is a great lecturer. I have sat in on two other chem professors classes, and in my opinion Sibert is by far the best. He is very helpful and you can contact him outside of class. the class is requires some effort, but with a good teacher it is much easier.
Dr. Sibert is DaBomb.com! I can't say enough wonderful things about him. I attribute my newfound love for Chemistry to his class.
He's much better than the other professors at UTD. The only bad thing is he has a habit of talking about things other than the course material for the first 10-15 minutes, but once he starts teaching, he is really easy to understand! If you see him in office hours or after class, he's especially helpful, but don't email, he'll never get back to you
Of the chem professors, Sibert is my favorite. He takes the time to actually work examples in class so that we all get a feel for how the material works without rushing through it.Only fault-sometimes distracted by tangents, and then you cram an unholy amount of material in the day before the exam. But his tangents were also very entertaining.
He was never there when I went for help. He is bad at replying to e-mails. He also grades tests really late. Would not recommend. This class is tough so you need a professor who is of avail to you.
Sibert tends to go off topic a lot but other than that, the lectures were helpful. The tests were a little difficult. Read the book and go to class and you should do fine.
Tends to go off topic but overall, pretty helpful. SIbert is definitely the best chem 2 teacher at UTD.
Great professor, that's why I give him a 5.0/5.0. He should try to cover more details during lectures. Like instead of explaining in depth, he should shoot through the material very quickly, so that he covers every detail.
Overall great. But, can post exam grades/keys in a more timely fashion. Example: He will say he is posting something on wednesday, but it somehow gets postponed by 3-4 days. Also, needs to cover more details in class. He will make sure you have the foundation, which is good. But, he should speed quicker through the material.
This class is all self-study. This is the type of professor who wont post any lecture notes, wont grade assignments/exams on time, and will waste time in class. He's good if you are the ideal shining student. But, if you are a normal freshman who just wants the A- or A, please take someone else. Taking another chem prof would be to your advantage.
Grades are due in a few week and he hasn't made any upload/corrections. He seemed very distracted the entire sem, and we would go to Dr. Sra's office hours for help and lecture notes/exam reviews. This prof is given high credit for making exams, but a quick search shows that he pulls questions from better professors online. Disappointed.
This professor is decent for General/Inorganic chemistry. I'm glad he doesn't run OChem or else it would become worse. Sibert teaches material at a decent level as per course difficulty. However, he has a superiority complex and never interacts with students outside of the class.
Sibert doesn't teach, he just rambles the material. It is clear that he is not fit for teaching. He should look at how taenzler or sra teach. This professor is just digging his own grave by building such a bad reputation
Everything is fine about this professor, except he doesn't reply to emails or help students much in office hours. Good luck.
Coming from a pltl leader who has worked with this Prof, please take him if your a diligent student. If you want an easy A, take Sra. She teaches the material quick and dirty, which may better suit you.
Class was a breeze. Just read the book and show up to class. You may want to do PLTL or the hw problems from the book as an extra.
He will actually teach you the material. I didn't like him b/c speaks the material too much. I like to see writings preferably on slides. He does slightly curve at end. I had an a- and he gave me an a so I have nothing to complain about.
Great teacher, explains material very well. Super super super hard class. Tests are extremely difficult and hard to finish on time. I recommend taking chemistry during the off-semester just because the test are so hard to pass.
I took his class over the summer. The class is much more fast paced during the summer but he did a good job teaching the material. You really have to pay attention to him. Everything he says is important. Actually cares about his students. Very smart. Tests are hard, but you MUST do the hw and you will be fine.
Super nice guy, go to his office hours and strike up a conversation. Lectures are really really entertaining, and he teaches his material incredibly well. Two negative feedbacks: my section was usually behind all the other sections because we would go through material slowly, and when he says he's going to post something online today, wait two days
Sibert's lectures are always really well-prepared & he rarely, if ever, slips up in class. He seems to be naturally good at speaking to a group & it makes you want to listen. If you are disciplined enough to study on your own, Sibert is a great professor. Not for the lazy.
Dont get me wrong. The course was fair, but he will not respond to your emails. He will only answer any questions that you have if you go to his office, which gets annoying after a while.
Definitely one of the best professors I've ever had; extremely passionate about the course and a gifted (and often times highly entertaining) orator. He really cares that the students understand the material, and is also very helpful outside of class.
He is a great professor, for people who say he doesn't go in detail or doesn't cover the material, I would disagree. He goes in depth with the concepts which are very important if you want to do well on exams. He is extremely helpful when you go into his office hours. Read a few sections of the book before class, helps a lot
One of the best lecturers you may ever have. He loves applying chemistry concepts to the real world, and what he says is actually really interesting. I wish he taught more classes though. TAKE HIM!
Chicks love this dude. He is great at telling stories and has had interesting experiences in life which he transfers to his descriptions of chemistry topics very eloquently. Supremely confident if not cocky, but he knows his stuff and loves science. Seems too busy for you in his office, but will answer questions. One of the best lecturers i've had.
Dr. Sibert is by far the best general chemistry professor at UT Dallas. I've taken him for both General Chemistry 1 and General Chemistry 2 with excellent results. A lot of people say he's slower than the other proffesors, but he explains the material more in depth. I would recommend Dr. Sibert to anyone, he makes the class understandable and fun.
Great lecturer. He has a very deep understanding of the material and its applications (particularly in a lab), so if you want to really *learn* chemistry as opposed to just learning how to pass an exam, I highly recommend Sibert. Was personally very happy with his teaching style.
Dr. Sibert is an awesome lecturer. He is very clear and very passionate about his work and helping students. However, he falls behind in lectures and tends to cram last min important information a day before the exam. Therefore, you must stay ahead of reading.
His lectures are really good but his is much slower at covering the materials before test than the other chem professor. He does not use PowerPoint so you have to write down the stuff on the projector. I would recommend skimming the textbook before coming to class. I took him for gen chem I and II and I did really well.
I took him during Summer 2012. Understand the homework, make sure you can do the homework and you will be fine. If he does not lecture about a certain topic, you will not see it on the test. Exam questions are not harder than homework questions. Very fair professor.
Hard class but I always look forward to coming to Dr. Sibert's class. The only drawback is that he has a tendency to cram last minute topics the day before a test.
Many students consider Gen Chem I to be somewhat hard but if you really pay attention to Sibert's Lectures, you'll realize that he is excellent at explaining concepts and how to do the problemsexamples. I liked Sibert so much I decided to take him again for Gen Chem II.
He's a great lecturer, but it's really up to you to get ready for the tests. I would say he was the best Gen Chem I professor. At the same time, it's really best to read the book and do practice exams for the tests.
Dr. Sibert rocks! He explains things really well and expects you to read and study for tests on your own time. Aside from that, he makes everything really relatable and easy to understand. Definitely recommend.
NEVER AGAIN. He rambles on and on. Class never helped. I skipped lecture for the second exam and did much better than the first when i actually went to class. He crams things the day of the exam. Nice and funny, but teaching needs improvement. You have to do a lot of reading on your own.
Sibert usually covers concepts and background information, with extra lectures that cover example problems with detailed explanations. His classes score consistently higher than the other sections. He does have a tendency to rush in the days before a test, and rarely is all the material covered in the primary lecture. He might be a psychopath.
Sibert tends to cram most of the exam material on the day before the exam. Be prepared to read the textbook and learn all of the information yourself. Do the homework problems and sign up for PLTL. An A is very possible. Sibert's lectures are not mandatory and if you do skip, just keep up with the material yourself.
Definitely a great professor. Had Taylor for the fall semester and I would say Sibert is much better. His lectures are very straightforward, and he writes everything he says down in a very clear manner. Does plenty of examples. I never read out of the textbook, but just studied his lecture and ALEKS notes.
I took Dr. Sibert for 1312 because I heard good things from other students and it turned it was the complete opposite. So I decided to give him another chance for ochem in the summer, but it was the same. He's really knowledgeable, but he's hard to get a hold of. I honestly learned more from the textbook than the lectures themselves.
Sibert has notes that he puts up while speaking. Great at explaining concepts. Reading is required to pass this class OR just doing homework problems! Good lecturer. Don't go to his office hours -he's a meanie.
Although Sibert does go in tangents about the history of a idea in chem, he's very clear/straightforward in his lectures. The style he uses is very conversational, which has always kept me very interested in the subject and made me understand WHY we are learning something. But be SURE to do work out of class. He mostly just explains the concepts.
By hotness I mean how attractive he is. He's the type of person to talk to about life but not Chem. He's lectures are interesting but he barely teaches Chem, so it's up to you to prepare for the tests.
Sibert will sometimes spend an entire lecture talking about some random, but still chemistry related topic. If you read the book, class isn't mandatory, but he gives random in-class exercises that consist of doing one example problems. Those only really occur when he feels there should have been more people in class though.
Professor Sibert is very straightforward when it comes to what you need to know for the exams, and his clearness in explaining the material is unparalleled by the other teachers. However, that's only when he's there, as this past semester, he was often in Europe, right around testing time.
Although the class in general was tough since I didn't take Chemistry since sophomore year of high school, John Siberts passion with chemistry and lecturing kept me awake even at the most grueling subjects. His ability to relate complex topics to simple things and even his own life stories make him a professor to desire. TL;DR Get him if you can
Dr. Sibert is a very cool professor, he's accomplished so much, he's also really passionate about what he teaches. I would def recommend him. only bad thing about him is that he usually doesn't post his notes, and may seem a little disorganized at times. but overall he's great and very helpful, i never even used the textbook
Sibert is an entertaining lecturer but I prefer more structure. If you want a professor who can teach you and keep up AND still have time to review the material and give practice questions, take Nielson or McCafee. Sibert goes very slow and I basically stopped attending all lectures. Do the practice questions, read the textbook and get an A.
Lectures are very cut and dry and often times irrelevant to material you need to know. Lots of practice outside of class is essential to passing. Everyone raves about him, and he's a nice guy, but is just generally not a good lecturer. Also tends to cram all material we missed the day before our exams. Would not recommend taking him.
Chemistry in itself wasn't a hard class. However, if you take Sibert, you'll make your life harder. His lectures aren't half bad but if you want to do good on the class, you need to take a lot of time outside of lecture and teach yourself.
Sibert is an amazing lecturer that sprinkles humor into his lessons to make otherwise dry topics interesting. His passion for the subject is clearly evident and he tries to relate learning material to real life examples to help his students better understand what they're learning. Would definitely take another class he teaches in a heartbeat.
Positives: extremely devoted to chemistry, very humorous, interesting lectures, student friendly and accessible. Negatives: goes on tangents(humorous ones), doesn't teach you everything you need to know (teaches the big picture), will require you to put in extra work outside of class, lectures are not very structured. I recommend, not for every1.
His lectures are very well planned and thought through, and he gives lots of examples. He's also super approachable and helpful during office hours and over email. However, there's a decent chance he'll be out of town when you need him, so make sure you get any questions answered as soon as possible. Gen chem will be time-consuming no matter what.
sibert is great for classes that you already have outside knowledge on. i took his CV honors gen chem class and if you've taken ap chem, then take gen chem w/him because it won't be too bad. also pay attention in class and go see him outside of class if you need to. he likes to talk though so get ready for that.
sibert is able to pack a lot of information into a short period of time, explains well and is able to keep us interested with funny anecdotes. he isn't very structured in his teaching but all you really need are his notes. he is very accessible and really tries to accommodate your needs. having taken ap chem before going to his class will help.
I know a ton of people love Sibert, but I just have to disagree. He's consistently late then holds the class over to "make sure you get all the lecture time you're paying for", he goes on long tangents about his life rather than the material, and since your class is always behind he crams 3 classes into the one right before the exam.
Gen Chem 1 sucked with Prof. Sibert. He just talks about nothing during lecture and it's not helpful at all for the exam. I had to teach myself the entire course with the textbook, PLTL, ALEKS, and my friends. It made no difference on my exam scores if I didn't go to class.
Dr. Sibert is amazing, he is very articulate and is available to help students whenever he is in his office, which is often. His notes are detailed, though slightly confusing if out of context. Lectures are not mandatory but beneficial.
He seems like a knowledgeable man, which he is, but sadly doesn't show it during lecture. He's a great person but could be a better lecturer. Talks about his life and goes off on tangents a lot. Says some pretty strange things which is what kept me interested most of the time. Chemistry is hard and just bc he's easy going don't let it fool you.
I hated chem with Dr. Sibert. He goes off on so many tangents and then doesn't spend enough time teaching. He'll sometimes teach new material the day before the test and not finish the lesson. ALEKS was ridiculous as well, it didn't help me at all.
He is a great professor, and makes you love Chemistry. He teaches the topics in depth as he cares about the concept other than exam questions. He also takes attendance often. The only concern I have is that he teaches new materials a day before the exam. Other than that, he is a great professors for those who enjoy Chemistry.
I went to 3 lectures total. Lectures dont make any sense, Ive never met a student that goes to them and understands what he says. Abstracts chemistry to where you cant apply any concepts to test. Most people skip his class and go to another or just read textbook. Can pass class by just reading textbook, but take anyone else instead.
Dr. Sibert is a knowledgeable man l, but he cannot teach. When he teaches a topic, he tries to connect it with the real world and goes on tangents, instead of emphasizing the importance of the material. To get a good grade in the class you're better off studying the book. Also, he is always behind from other classes and teaches material last minute
Teaches concepts. You can tell he is passionate about teaching, and he will always be available to help you out if you don't understand anything. While some profs take days to respond to emails, Dr. Sibert will probably respond within minutes if he sees it. I can't recommend him enough for chem 1.
This class was alright. Not as hard as other classes, but also not super easy. The lectures were a bit dry and halfway through the semester I started taking the minimum amount of notes, but Dr. Sibert is very knowledgeable and he truly wants you to succeed. I recommend taking him because you will learn.
Dr. Sibert was a great teacher for honors chem and he really cared about the topic. He did go over every single detail (and did have many humorous, off-topic digressions), so pick another prof if you just want the info. Exams were generally easy, just do some practice problems and read over his notes he posts. He responds to emails fast!
Though he goes on a lot of tangents (A LOT) he really cares about his students. He held weekly workshops for us and even though they are late at night and about 2 hours long, I would definitley reccomend going. It gives him enough time to get through his tangents and eventually get to the material. Overall a good professor.
If you love chemistry, you need to take Dr. Sibert for honors gen chem. He teaches concepts, not facts to memorize, and really pushed us to think. The lectures were entertaining and engaging. He genuinely cares about his students learning, and loves to discuss concepts/questions after class. It wasn't an easy class, but I would 10/10 recommend.
Very good prof. Goes off topic sometimes. Always available outside of class. Can email him at 2 am and he will respond.
The man, the myth, the legend.
Amazing lectures, he's absolutely great, made me love chemistry.
Dr. Sibert is an amazing! He tells lots of funny stories, and is very knowledgeable about his field. He's super passionate about chemistry, and that rubs off on his students. He's one of the best lecturers on campus; take him if you have the chance.
If you have the chance, take Sibert for honors chem! The class was fun and, although challenging, sibert does a good job at explaining the concepts and gives plenty of practice before exam time. I wish he taught more classes.
His lectures were very difficult for me to follow. I truly love chemistry, but I found his lectures not very helpful in learning the material. His lectures were conceptual and worldly. He rarely walked us through problems, so I found lectures about concepts unhelpful when I went home and saw the book was filled with difficult computational problems
Sibert is very amazing. Some complain about his tangents that he can go on during class, but they just made me more interested in chemistry. He is really involved in education process. For a lot of people, gen chem is HARD. But it isnt his fault! He makes his class pretty fun! He is the chemistry messenger-Dont shoot the messenger! Try to enjoy it!
From what I experienced in his class, he is very conceptual. His stories help further solidify your knowledge of the concepts. It's up to you to take initiative and learn the math behind the concept and you should do fine.
Professor Sibert is a very stylish professor and not only does he care about chemistry, most importantly he cares about his students. If you're going to UT Dallas for grad school, I highly recommend him as a professor because he seems to communicate well with his grad students. Overall, John is the bomb.
As a freshman i'm really happy I got Dr. Sibert as my professor. He really is genuine and cares about his students. If you show up to his lectures and workshops, you put on a good impression. He really will do what he can to help you and is extremely understanding. But don't expect to magically get an A in this class. You truly have to work for it.
great chem professor, he talks a lot about other things but honestly a lot of the other chem professors do that too, he's not only a great teacher but also a great guy in general, he truly cares about his students' success and will be there for you if you ever need help
This man is a living god if you are able to take him for ANY class, do so. I absolutely HATE chemistry but he made it fun and I feel like I actually learned something. He could give me a ten-hour lecture ANY DAY OF THE WEEK
Dr. Sibert is the best gen chem prof at UTD. Sibert explains chemistry in a manner that captivates and energizes students to the point where I briefly considered changing my major to chem. He is very organized, his workshops rock, and he is a wonderful resource for students wanting to gain valuable insight in life and gain a friend on the way.
Dr. Sibert is probably the best gen chem professor at UTD. He's passionate and manages to make it interesting (considering it's chem). He's articulate and funny and very much wants to help you. If you're going to take chem, take it with him if you can!
Does random attendance throughout semester. SO sweet and encouraging. God he gave the most inspirational pep talks during lecture lol. As other reviews say hes rly passionate but doesnt teach the test. but imo no matter who u take for gen chem youll be stuck learning 85% of it by urself so might as well take it with a cool prof like Sibert!
This class is really hard. His lectures do not really help. You have to teach yourself the entirety of the material. He is super approachable and really wants to help his students. However, he is not good at teaching and his lectures are unorganized. I would avoid taking him if you can.
If you put in the work and take advantage of all the opportunities and supplemental learning he offers, theres no reason not to get an A. Dr. Sibert is the only professor that has gotten me to understand organic chemistry.
Sibert is the worst professor I've had at UTD, organic chemistry 2 with him was insanely confusing. Lectures never made sense and I watched more Khan Academy and Youtube videos more. He's extremely biased towards boys. Does NOT respond to emails when he says he's already responded to everyone, never meets any of his self imposed deadlines.
Dr Sibert is one of the most unorganized professors I have ever taken. He imposes VERY strict deadlines on students, as well as proclaim "fairness" to be a class priority--in reality, he NEVER posts documents when he promises to. Good luck getting grades back before 5:00 pm on the last day of the semester. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
Dr. Sibert is honestly a great professor, but for the dear life of me the man is super disorganized. He writes our tests the day before, and hasn't even submitted the final grades on the last day of the semester. This class gave me a lot of anxiety especially since its so test heavy. Wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Sibert was the worst professor I have ever had. He makes this class harder than it already is and does not give a curve like all of the other ochem professors and gives 6 exams rather than 3. He is extremely disorganized and would set deadlines and would never meet them. All the exams were made way too long and the class struggled to finish.
The type of prof that thinks youre ONLY taking his class bc he assigns so much hw that takes forever to finish, which doesnt even help when it comes to tests. I took this class online due to COVID so youd think hed be more understanding but nope. Test days are on SATURDAYS?? Many students were failing and he refused to curve. The worst class.
Im taking this class during Covid, so it's online, and it is impossible. The work load is insane, the tests that the chemistry department gives are insane, and there are no curves. Just don't do this to yourself. I have never failed a test in my life until this class. I study at an insane level, yet I still fail.
This class made me absolutely despise chemistry. I have never failed so many exams despite constantly studying. When I emailed him about questions to clarify something, he was very rude and acted like I was stupid and should've already known. He went off on tangents a lot as well, and overall it was just hard to learn in his class.
Absolutely horrible. Do not take this course during COVID. Have a question to email him? 75% chance he won't ever answer, or when he does, he is remarkably rude. Does not teach all the material that will be on the exams. Exams have numerous trick questions. Has no sympathy for the COVID situation. AVOID at all costs during COVID.
This is the absolute worst professor I have ever taken. He used extensive grammar that made no sense what so ever to explain the topics. He gets off topic a lot!!! Very rude and disrespectful when you try to email him regarding questions you have. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
The online setting of honors chem 1315 definitely played a part in how awful this class was, but I hated everything. Sibert goes off on tangents all the time and his notes are mostly horrible photocopied diagrams. However, he is a very caring prof and he curved our final grades (but nobody knows what his grading scale is still). Read the textbook!
Goes off on random tangents for most of the lectures then tries to run through 5 lectures worth of material in one hour. The tests themselves are tricky, and he is not generous with curving. You are better off with another gen chem professor.
Dr. Sibert is kind, but makes the class unnecessarily difficult. If you only listen to lectures and do some hw problems, it's unlikely that you'll do well on exams. Also, his lectures often make the concepts more confusing than they are. He's a good gen chem prof, but I don't recommend him for a difficult course like organic chemistry 2.
Ochem 2 is hard, regardless on the professor. I did not do well in Ochem 1 however, I did very well in this class because the professor provides a well-thought out study plan. Even though it is not required to complete to readings or the homework, I highly recommend it! Practicing the problems repeatedly is the only way to do well on exams.
Professor Sibert honestly gets a lot of unnecessary hate. Chemistry is a relatively difficult subject to understand and often times it's a lack of preparation that causes students to not do well. PLTL is not very helpful for this course but doing the homework is crucial, you will not do well without it. Attend workshops if you can, they help a lot.
Sibert is amazing at explaining concepts and he genuinely is interested in the success of his students. Easily the best gen chem teacher. He made gen chem manageable and actually enjoyable. His office hours and reviews are gold. If you want to get an A, go to class, do PLTL, do ALL the homework, attend his lectures, and go to his office hours.
Quite possibly the hardest class I have taken so far, Professor Sibert himself is a nice guy but he tends to go off on random motivational tangents during lecture that take up half the class time. You will need to put hours of work into Gen Chem if you want to pass.
i was worried taking ochem 2 over the summer because i struggled with ochem 1 but dr. sibert is a wonderful professor and attending lectures + review sessions were really helpful. not a lot of people went to his reviews but he went over the review questions in detail. his exams were exactly like his reviews with a few textbook hw questions.
Gen chem 1 was very difficult, but Dr. Sibert was able to explain everything in a very bite sized piece way. However do not take him if you are prone to skipping class because you will not be able to succeed. However, for those who put in the effort and study hard, you should be able to get a decent grade. However, it's not a class that you can BS.
He is the best professor in chemistry department. He truly cares about students and puts his students first. Recommend him 100%
Dr. Sibert is an incredible professor in my eyes. He clearly explains the topics and is really down to earth. Others complain about his tendency to go off on tangents, but I find them very interesting (mostly because I do the same thing). Of course, you need to work hard, but he definitely loves teaching and wants everyone to learn and succeed.
In general, he's a good professor. If you get him for gen. chem. you should be okay. Just know that he can go off-topic sometimes, and moves around content. He also has thing about midterm grades where he avoids putting them in until the last second, which could be either good or bad depending on you.
Though I think highly of Professor Sibert, I didn't appreciate the honors section. He had a propensity to veer off-topic. I never understood why he gave us difficult open-ended exams while the regular sessions did not. If you are taking other challenging subjects or have time-consuming ECs, it can be tough to complete the daily ungraded homework.
Professor Sibert has the tenacity and spirit to teach. He is a great person with an amazing sense of humor; however, his lectures are a bit too dry. He teaches the theoretical aspects of chemistry and not the application aspects, but the application aspects is all that matters for exams. Overall, I wouldn't recommend taking this class with him.
Professor Sibert is very nice. He's such a dad. He goes on a lot of tangents but he's a great teacher. He's really easy to reach, and he reviewed exams with me when I asked him to help me with my mistakes. He's a piper professor for a reason!
If you can, I highly recommend taking Dr. Sibert for inorganic chemistry! There was a good amount of preparation put in for the tests with plenty of quizzes and workshops to study from. Make sure to not skip class because it's easy to get lost without.
Great professor with engaging lectures, but they're deceptively simple. Review the lectures the night before and take notes. If you take honors, know that the exams are open-ended; the bulk of the questions come from the content taught earlier in the unit. As much as daily ungraded homework sucks, it does help, and so does going to office hours.
Not a self-paced course, you must actively follow along to do well. Professor Robert was very approachable and kindly willing to stay behind after class to provide help with workshops. His office hours are very helpful too. Several quizzes and exams but no drops on exams, however he generously curves.
Engaging lectures, but deceptively simple. Review before class and use unstuck study for study prep. Open-ended exams are tough, but daily work helps. Professor is enthusiastic and wants students to succeed.
Honors Chem 1 with Sibert is an amazing experience. He is generous with his time outside of class, will meet with students individually to establish study plans, and is just a fun guy overall. Just make sure to do the posted (non-graded) homework after each lecture, and you'll be on pace and good to go.
Professor Sibert's classes come with a decent workload, but the payoff is worth it. The 1312/1316 curriculum involves a lot more equations than 1311/1315; plugging and chugging is fine, but Sibert helps you understand, to an extent, why said equations work. He's available outside of class and offers problem sections that help with exams too.
teaches well. exams were all within reason of the homework/quiz/example problems. def a yapper but fun
