final is optional, extra credit available, study chapter tests for in class test
Astronomy- SO BORING I couldn't keep my eyes open. But has E Credit.
not hard to pass but is a tough class
get those old tests in the LRC and study from them. =)
easy b/c you get to study from his old tests..
I photocopied all the old tests from the LRC in the begining of this course, i highly recommend you do the same. I actually found the lectures to be interesting, and I like that Sievers is really into astronomy.
All you have to do is fill out the book and turn in the pages for extra credit and study from there. If you have an A at the end of the semester then you don't have to take the final! He is very helpful if you need assistance.
Really really boring, but if you read the book, and sort of listen you can get at least a B. Offers extra credit that is useful in learning as well as getting extra points.
BORING LECTURES, SUPER COLD CLASSROOM. BUT HE IS VERY NICE, GIVES EXTRA CREDIT..ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LISTEN. I LIKED HIM
BORING?!? I donno, maybe its just me. I like this stuff. If you like it too, its going to be an awesome class. Definitely go for it. Listen and study a little and you'll do fine. I'm getting an A. Very cool.
Good class easy to get an A.
Very good teacher! Knows his stuff, very easy puts his old tests in the library USE THEM!!!Gives xtra credit. He is relaxed on attendance half the class signs in than leaves. If you want to learn he is your guy,if you want to pass he is your guy too!!!
Willie Wonka on crack! he drinks his espresso and then bounces off the walls at 8 in the morning! classroom is cold and dark - bring a blanket and a pillow if you take him in the am.
very good course to take... gives you an outline of what he is going to teach in each chapter... goes over those one by one and tests you on that... can drop one test even the final... so if your content at the end of the semester you can skip the final..
Great teacher, easy A, just do well on the first 3 tests and you can skip the rest of the semester, I got an A in this class with next to no effort. He is super helpful if you have any questions!
Great teacher a little hard to understand but he is always willing to teach you the concepts over and over again until you get it. you take 4 exams and one final but the final is just another exam and you can drop the lowest plus he gives out extra credit
I do not recommend this class if you're not into science. The tests were hard and it was boring.
Class is not rocket science, read the book an easy A dont read probably can still get an A. Just check out his old tests in the library, and ask questions the day before the test. He is not the most exciting teacher, but Ive had a lot worse
This class was so easy...all you have to do is come to class, take notes in his lecture guide (which is ex cr), and be sure to look at his old exams in the LCR..easy A..he loves what he teaches and knows what he's talking about..only thing is it can be hard to stay awake if astronomy isnt your thing
He is a quarky teacher. He has a great personailty. He looks just like santa claus. He gives four tests, including final. Extra credit is available; it really helps. Also, you need to study hard to pass exams. If you do reading you'll easliy pass the class. You really should take him!!!
He is very hard, and very boring, you can look at the old tests but, they are not anything like his in class exams. He is very rude, and incredibly boring. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
OH MY GOD!! DO NOT TAKE HIM, HE LECTURES SOO MUCH, HE ASSIGNS SEATS DURING AN EXAM, HE IS VERYYYYY BORING AND HARD...!
Really nice guy, but I HATED the class. I couldn't stay awake even if I was on something. Couldn't hear him half of the time and made my life miserable for a semester. Not all that hard of material, but just a wasted effort. Got my first C in there. Not worth it!
Energizer teacher.. keeps talking and talking and talking.. will bore you to death and his exams are difficult but not as difficult as staying awake in his class.
This teacher is really boring but knows his stuff well. The only real way do to well in the class is do the study guide since he goes by it, practice his older tests and you'll get a decent grade. I always came out tired after the class.

AWESOME. The man's looks like a gnome. It's great. He really knows the material, and has a knack for making it seem very logical and simple. Passes most scientific laws off as common sense, and proves how they are. Thorough and informed, and VERY energetic. Love him.
This guy is awesome. He loves his job and you can tell. He makes the class interesting and explains everything well. A fair amount of reading though. Let's you drop lowest exam grade out of 5 total. No papers. Extra credit offered. Take Sievers for sure!!!
This guy is awesome... he made me love science b/c he made things interesting...
Excellent class, excellent professor. The subject matter is fascinating and this professor really knows what he is talking about. His character is pleasant and he uses great examples. Highly recommended.
Sievers is an excellent professor. He knows his stuff and makes it interesting. Be sure to get his lecture book and take class notes. They will help immensly when taking exams. An extremely fascinating class!
Please, do not take him!!Boring, his voice is funny and he looks like SANTA:)You should take some other science like GEO 101 it's easier!!
Boring boring boring...he turns off the lights and talks with a slide projector all class. super nice guy and he'll try to help but the class sucks.....he does look like santa and talks just the way you would expect a nerdy astronomer would
I learned a lot in this class. Professor Sievers drops your worst test grade and gives you extra credit for completing your work book. Final is optional, those with an A have no reason to take it, for others it can only improve your grade.. In this class you will learn about black holes, time travel, the density a star/sun must be to go supernova
Don't believe the bad things you hear. Mr Sievers is a great teacher, he got the brilliance and really knows his stuff. His teaching style is pretty old fashion, which makes it kind of boring. Other than that, the class is great! It'll intrigue you. So if you want a teacher with extreme intelligence, John Sievers is a great choice.
Please don't take this class!! He is a horrible teacher. I studied for every test and unless you remember every minute detail you can't get more than a C. There is no homework and about 5pts extra credit for the whole semester so if you fail a test you are screwed! He is extremely boring and says "MMKAY" every other word. So ANNOYING!!!

talks with a slurr hard to understand hard tests mandatory attendance
Mr.Sievers is the most interesting and exceptional teaching I have ever known! He is extremely organized and never falls behind. He gives you a lecture guide book that helps you a lot instead of taking crazy notes yourself. And you are allowed to see previous tests from past semesters to help you study. The tests are not hard if you study....DUH!
This was THE best class I have taken at Mesa. He could not be any more clear about what is going to be on the tests. (HE GIVES YOU PRIOR TESTS FOR CHRISTS SAKE) When I studied I got good grades, if I slaked off it showed. I am completely awed by this subject AFTER taking the class.
He's a really good teacher. Most students don't understand him because he's very knowledgable about astronomy and can talk in a way that may be hard to comprehend if you're not very good at science. You get a lecture guide which really helps and can be used for extra credit. Only 5 tests, but they make up your whole grade.
You can access old test. Do it, make note-cards, get an easy A. If you are at all interested in whats above you head you will be floored by some of the things you learn in his class. I recomend you take his class even if you have to take it as an elective. Yea its that good. If you dont care but need a passing grade take the class.
HORRIBLE BORING!!!! I dropped it...you sit all day in a dark room with lame slide shows...if you fail one of his impossible tests youre screwed...DO NOT TAKE HIM
This class was great! Come to class, and do the practice tests, and it's an easy A. If you don't care, and don't put in any effort, don't expect a good grade, because his tests are hard. He offers extra credit and drops one of the tests. He tries to keep the class interested by asking stupid questions.
Professor Sievers is a fun teacher and will help you understand if you don't quite get it. I walked away with a "B" but had to study alot for it since grading is primarily on tests. Studying is important but if you go to class, he will make sure to answer your questions and guide you through.
MOST BORING CLASS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took the class Fall 07 and really enjoyed the class. Nice Professor and very glad I took the class, because he made science interesting to me when it is usually hard. Read the book and do the extra credit and you will do well.
IF you love astronomy like I do this class is awesome. Sievers tells interesting stories which are cool and relate somewhat to the current topics. He leaves his old tests on reserve in the library if you photocopy them and study them you will get an A on all of the tests I didnt even have to take the last tests cuz I got all A's on the tests.
This was my first class in 10 years and he's pretty easy. Don't need the text book. Just get the lecture guide and study off his old test either at the library or online and used Google alot. He'll drop the lowest test score out of 5 tests.
I missed a B by one single point. Emailed him a few times and he refuses to gift me one single point. Thought he was a nice old man and a decent teacher, but the fact he wouldnt do that one thing really reallly makes me angry. MAD!
He says m-kay alot and the class can be hard to follow and BORING. I relied on the practice tests that he has on reserve in the library. Make flash cards with them and fill out your workbook and you'll do fine. I got an A that way.
He is hard to follow in his lectures sometimes, but if you ask questions for clarity, you will be able to. Make lots of notes in guide, download and get the answers from previous tests, and you will get an A.
BTW, as he says in class; there are 15 points of extra credit, so you didn't miss the B by 1 point... you probably missed it by 16 points if you didn't do the EC. AND he gives you the previous tests to study, so... Your fault, not his!
He is a wonderful old man, but his lectures often go off subject. On his exams he will sometimes give two correct answers to one question but mark you off for choosing the one he doesn't mean. Study the past exams, though, and you'll be fine.
He's a wonderful guy, though clearly getting on in years. His "analogies" take forever to explain and even longer to understand. But, all around, I learned a lot from him. He gets very excited about this subject and loves the students who really pay attention and interact with him.
is obviously passionate about astronomy, but the lectures can be pretty boring. as long as you do the practice tests which he leaves for you in the library you will do fine. i studied them and the lecture guide for every test and got B's on all of them. do the lecture guides before the tests, easy 3 points every time.
Great teacher! This guy is very passionate about what he does, and it shows. Class was alot harder than I expected! Listen to his lectures, and do HIS study guide and you will pass!
Prof Sievers knows all there is to know about astronomy and he truly cares about the students. He gives you the old tests. I made a C but I had a very off semester.
in his class is like listening to grandpa telling cool stories. he really knows his stuff. and tests rn't hard if you ready the lecture guide and do old tests. all ur grades are based on the tests and max. 12 extra credit.
Very cool professor that has a passion for what he teaches. Actually made me show great interest in astronomy for the first time. Answers all of your questions and is real funny and respectful. Is only a hard class if you're lazy and don't try.
Extremely knowledgeable and currently practicing Astronomer. Lives this passion. Has traveled worldwide & is a wealth of knowledge. Go 2 class, listen, & write everything down in "workbook", then copy old tests in the LRC: study both & you should be able to get an A..... Astronomy is something I am very interested in since his class!!!
Took this for IGETC science prereq and this course wound up my fav for the semester. Sievers is the most 'professor-ie' prof I've encountered at Mesa. He comes across highly intelligent and you can tell he knows the material very well - more importantly he is able to use this to tech/lecture clearly. Presents info so it is relate-able.
He looks like a gnome and is super nerdy, great teacher! knows his stuff!
If your up for the work it should be an easy A. Professor gives you access to previous exams and if you just study those and your study guide you should do great.
He is awesome. He give you the access to the old exams and he has his own study guide. Study them and you'll get an easy A. I loved his class. He is the best!
Probably the best teacher ive ever had. Uses great examples and is extremely clear and helpful.
This professor is absolutely amazing. I was not very interested in the subject he teaches but now I am considering adding a second major in Astronomy. Very helpful, very clear, and very funny. If you go to Mesa you must take this guy. Highly recommended.
I was so excited for this class and i really wanted to learn new things. His entire class is just lecture and slides and no homework. Fairly boring but my mistake is taking the class 8am and he turns off the lights so i fell asleep most the time. Grade is based on test little extra credit. But very nice, willing to help, and very knowlegdeable.
I enrolled in this class only knowing I was interested in the sciences but unsure as to which specific study I wanted to major in. This instructor didnt help me narrow it down much because he made them all sound fascinating. Provides great lectures with a pinch of humor. Teaches right out of the course material so its easy to follow along.
You can tell that he's intelligent and that he's passionate about his subject. His class does drag sometimes. He lets you study old exams before the test and there are often several questions from the old exam on yours
Great teacher! Very knowledgeable in his subject, very helpful. Class requires his Lecture Guide to help you with the note taking process, which I found helpful. Class is all lecture and slides, so if you fall asleep easily, take a later class and not an early one! Sometimes may go off on silly tangents during lecture, but overall stays on point!
Interesting class. Sievers is very passionate and knowledgeable about Astronomy. Lectures are kinda boring but you should still pay attention. Definitely go to the library and take advantage of his old exams. Majority of the questions from the old exams are on his exams. :) If you study, you'll pass!
This class is easy. Bottom line. The only grades are 5 multiple choice exams, which he drops your lowest. If you have an A after the 4th one, you don't even have to attend the last 3 weeks of class and he tells you this. The expensive textbook is not needed at all, just the cheap 30$ lecture guide (this is what all exams and notes are from).
this class was somewhat hard for me, but all the old tests are available. take this class if youre ready to study or listen to a buncha lectures. nice professor though and he definitely knows what hes talking about
Really bad at explaining things. The subject is somewhat hard and the tests are in-depth, but things got much better when I just looked up the topics on the NASA's Imagine website (I think its for kids even). The site gets straight to the point. He also quizzes you on such random things. Complete memorization class. Sievers - better off a scientist
all his class consists of is: lecture then test lecture then test. no other assignments or projects. personally, i need more so i didnt do well. but if thats what you like, then he is perfect!
I wish I would've really understood how much the practice tests would help me from the beginning of the semester. Sievers is very passionate about his subject but class can be a little boring at times. There are 5 exams and that is all. No homework. 15 extra credit points are possible if you turn in lecture guide. Don't buy textbook only lecture guide is needed. Do study the practice tests most of the questions on exams are on those tests. I ended up getting a B in the class.
Boring. His class is just a monologue. He doesn’t involve students in class. He deviates from the class subjects to tell irrelevant stories about his niece and family. You have to learn everything from the book. Going to class is useless. If you want to be bored to death and loose interest in astronomy, take his class. Random questions in tests.
His lectures were boring at times. Bottom line is, just buy the lecture book, do the super easy extra credit, study from past exams and you will pass.
Prof Sievers loves what he teaches! Very sweet and helpful. I actually found an interest in this class and never missed a day. Follow along with the booklet for lectures, I used my book twice, I don't recommend getting one. You can google most of the answers if you miss it in the lectures.
Very knowledgable. If you have the grade you want after the last test, you don't have to take the final. Not the most interesting or strongest subject for me so I did have to force myself to pay attention and study.
Very nice professor, lectures can get kinda boring at times but okay overall. He gives you a sheet in the beginning of the year that spells out what's going to be on the test, but it's still very hard material. However, you can drop your lowest test grade, and there's also easy extra credit. The scale is very forgiving as well (A 88%+, etc).
