Great teacher, very helpful, puts in extra time for everyone who wishes it.
Great teacher, great storyteller. His lectures kept me entertained everyday.
SIMPSON 4 PREZ!
AWESOME, do the Simpson challenges. I didnt pay too much attention to his lectures because they were at 8am but did every Simpson challenge and received 3 4.0's for all of his classes. Very personable!
Brilliant! Never a dull moment! Reason why i am a history major now!
THE BEST TEACHER AT PIERCE HANDS DOWN. TAKE HIM HE'S THE BEST! VERY FUNNY AND WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY! DO THE PAPER INSTEAD OF THE TEST. ONLY 2 TESTS OR PAPER A QUARTER
Awesome teacher! Keeps you on your toes. Made me laugh. Knows his stuff. Take him if you can. He is soo cool.
Mr. Simpson is an amazing teacher who is hilarious but really knowledgeable.
I LOVE THIS MAN. He's amazing. Wonderful storyteller, INCREDIBLE historian, and just a great person overall. He truly cares about his students and about teaching history. Arguably the best teacher at Pierce.
very funny, intense, laid back...only two tests that determine your whole grade tho (good for some but not for all)
Kept the class e z. No h/w. Lectures were awesome. Very helpful. Interesting class. Was debating whether to keep the Simpson challenge and in the process hurt my grade. No hard feelings. Overall, awesome course, awesome Historian, awesome person.
He is so awesome. Very engaging and made history entertaining. Always looking to help you in any way as well.
awsome teacher!! gives great lectures and is always there if you need him.
Great Teacher.......he cancels class alot. :) He knows what he is talking about, and it is interesting enough to keep you listening.
he's so cool, no h/w, he's a very dynamic teacher, and his lectures are actually interesting...

Really good history teacher. I would recomend him to anyone. Makes history easier to learn and interesting.
does an awesome job at explaining the course of history
He is an awsome teacher. Makes history interesting and fun. You learn alot from him and he only gives 1 test!!!!
hes is one of the most amazing teachers at Pierce. He tells excellent stories and is REALLY funny as well. Fefinitly one of my absolute favorites
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! "Sargon on steroids..." "People are meant to be fat, dumb and happy." Best sayings, funny, no homework! MAKES CLASS INTERESTING and HE KEEPS YOU AWAKE!!! best stories ever! coolest teacher! Even though I'm not going into history as a major..I'm still going to take his class!
Best narrative professor i've ever had. I could listen to him talk all day, and have nearly done that in past quarters, but he's no push over.
JOHN SIMPSON FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!
Awesome instructor, has a very interesting view of history.
It's a swet class. He is a teacher that cares for our education.
this teacher is so tight. he gives really good lectures and does really well at making sure that everyone understands completely. I love how he teaches it is unlike any other teacher that I have ever learned from he is definately one of my favorites and I must say probably makes HST 241 the only class that I would wake up at 7:00 in the morning for
Like I have been reading everyone thinks he is an awesome teacher. Probably because he is!!! If you see any of these comments and are thinking about taking a history class and you want the most out of the class and a pretty easy grade check out mr. Simpson.... As someone said SIMPSON FOR PRESIDENT!
I AGREE! SIMPSON FOR PRESIDENT! We need someone intelligent up there in D.C...
I hated history until I took John Simpsons class...he really makes history interesting. And he's funny.
He's a pretty good teacher. He's unorthodox, if you're in his 7 o' clock class, you end up missing a lot of class because he cancels for some reason or another. It's an easy class because there's no homework, but it's difficult in that your entire grade relies on two tests basically. He's also obviously biased. Otherwise, he's an interseting guy.
LOVE SIMPSON! you HAVE to take one of his classes.
By far, the best professor I've ever had! I dreaded taking a history course, but John Simpson really makes you sit on the edge of your seat for his lectures. Amazing instructor.
Great teacher, easy and interesting and funny, no homework, only two tests - the only thing is, since there's no homework, don't take him if you want to practice writing history papers before going to university.
This guy is awsome. A total character. Hes also smart and well rounded to back it up. Take this class if you want to be educated or just dont want to be bored with school. Either way if you find yourself bored with his class have someone check your pulse because you might be dead.
Simpson knows his subject matter and the class is super easy. He does nothing to prepare you for going on to a four year college. He should require some writting!!! If you don't get a 4.0 in his class, there is something seriously wrong...multiple choice exams. He is a nice guy...but not challenging at all.
Fabulous instructor. I went from having ZERO interest in history, to changing my MAJOR to history. I took one of his classes, then another, then another. I'm hooked. YOU MUST TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES!!!
Mr. Simpson is a great instructor. He makes history come alive; he's tough but very fair. More instructors should be like he is.
Best teacher I have ever had.
Outstanding speaker who loves what he is doing. If you attend every class and take good notes you don?t need the book. Tests are easy because of his story telling teaching style of the history he loves. Take this teacher!!!!

Best teacher I've ever had. I took all his civ. classes and his vietnam class. Learn more in these 4 classes then high school. He made me want to come to class everyday. Doesn't really use the textbook unless it is for his vietnam class. You must take a course with him if you attend this school.
AMAZING :D Take his class!!
Nice guy; easy to understand; committed to quality education and to student learning. Take him.
Great teacher. Exceptionally well at lectures. Very interesting guy. BUT, i think people like his personality and what he has to say, not the class itself. therefore making the class not challenging. which could be bad if you plan on transferring.
Simpson is a PHENOMENAL lecturer, simply the BEST. He's brilliant and frickin' hilarious, one heck of a guy! You will fall in love with history if you take his classes. His tests are based solely on his lectures, mostly multiple choice and pretty easy if you take good notes. No HW besides reading, which you honestly don't need.
Some think history teachers are boring- Not this guy! Excellent story teller, shows how events in the past connect with the present. Lecture based and easy to take notes in his class. Great for all learning styles. I will take any class he teaches even photography!
The absolute BEST teacher I've ever had. I just got out of the crappiest history class I'd ever taken and wasn't looking forward to Mr. Simpson's until he came in and started teaching. I truly remembered and understood history after I finished his classes and I wish that I could take more with him.
This guy is a great teacher. He clearly goes through the time line of history. All in a very logical order. Also, really easy to talk to.
I loved him, He really knows how to explain history in a way that you WILL remember and enjoy it. You will need to attend his lectures but will help if needed.
A very clear, thorough, and efficient professor who devotes an EXTREMELY large amount of his time and compassion to helping his students pass his class, in and out of the classroom. He has a bit of an ego, but his depth, clarity, and illustration of the subject make up for it. Never used the textbook, despite its requirement.
Simpson is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He makes class fun and interesting. You can tell that he has a passion for what he teaches. His grading is fair and makes expectations very clear.
Simpson is a fabulous professor who really makes history come alive. It is partially thanks to him that now that I am at a university, I am majoring in history and hoping to one day get my PhD. Thank you, John Simpson!
easy teacher. just show up if you want an A, if not youll be stuck with a C
He was amazing! I am not a history fan or buff but with his amazing story telling ability he made me a believer.
I HATE HISTORY and have always gotten bad grades in history.. got a 4.0 in his class however.. too easy and I've learned SOO much.. DONT BUY THE BOOK you dont need it just take good notes
He is a great teacher. His saying is "If i cant make it relative to you don't bother showing up for class" all of the students still show up so he is doing his job right.
World Civ. 1, no homework, 1 mid term= all multiple choice, 1 long answer. same with the final, just try to pay attention and take good notes and thats it, it was hard at 8am but still just do it and you will be fine
hes willing to teacher early classes, and he fights for his running start students, his tests are fair, and hes willing to work with his students. hes also talks with students before and after class making it seem more personal like he cares.
He is a great teacher. The class as a whole was insightful and he makes connections that makes everything relevant. Just one thing that is a negative, don't come in late. God help you if you do!
When you can't think of anything negative about the teaching style, you know you have a great teacher. One thing that will forever impress me is when he said "This class is about quality, not quantity!!" You know you are in for a great ride in history. To be honest, his style of teaching is more of a librarian telling a story to children. Awesome.
Great professor. He makes history relevant while at the same time actually teaching you something about the past. He also takes the time to explain concepts through the use of simple examples. This man knows exactly what he is doing when he steps up before a class, and he does a wonderful job of doing what he clearly enjoys doing - teaching.
best teacher ever! made history fun! funny, give good examples to help us understand easier. i wish all the teachers are like him!
Might as well not buy your book cause you won't need it. His 2 tests are off of his notes and they count 100% of your grade. He tells you the questions the day before. You get A TON of his opinion in this class. I think for a college level history class I should have learned more, if you just want to skip class and get a good grade this is for you.
Awesome teacher. His lectures make history up to date, interesting, and fun to learn. I actually wanted to go to his class every day. We didn't have to read from the book (although it was suggested), the only tests are the mid term and final, and if you come every day you automatically pass the class. Awesome grader. Definitely recommend.
Absolutely amazing teacher; quickly became my mentor as I aspire to becoming a history teacher. Lectures are clear, engaging, informative, & he is absolutely hilarious.
John Simpson is the best teacher that I've had at Pierce so far. His lectures were very entertaining and he made the material very easy to learn. I took the class first thing in the morning and I'm not a morning person but I didn't miss a single class. Great instructor!
John is an entertaining instructor. He is very down-to-earth and his lectures are partially off of discussions and questions from his students. But it helps us learn much better. His exams are cake as long as you attend class and TAKE NOTES and study off of them. His final wasn't that difficult. Great teacher!
His class is always one I enjoy as he is very intertaining with the stories he shares with us on history...Only wish I could have grasped the information better as your grade is mainly 2 tests. If you come to class you come to class you will pass.
I am suck at History, but Mr Simpson can transform every pieces of History into interesting hilarious information. At least I learned how did this world (US) happened clearly although I still did suck on it. Thanks Mr Simpson
A great instructor. He makes history easy to understand! His lessons are easy to comprehend as long as you pay attention. He is very fun too! He doesn't write on the board a lot. He usually explain things verbally instead of writing. I'll recommend you to have an audio recording of his lecture if you have problems catching up!
He knew what he was teaching. 2 test, mid-term and final, all based on lecture note. MC and one essay. highlight before test, which is really great.
He makes lectures interesting, and writes the two tests off of his lectures. Easy class to pass if you're engaged and take notes.
I love this teacher. He is so funny and chill. All you gotta do is listen in class. No homework or stupid pointless assignments. Other teachers should learn from him.
Professor is a fun and easy going guy to listen to. He very knowledgeable about History and makes History fun to learn if you are one that normal doesn't like History. He also sticks for the student body at staff meetings. He is a professor that you should take at least one of his classes during your time at Pierce.
This man knows his history and makes it exciting. I could not wait to come to class and listen to him speak.
Awesome teacher! makes the class really fun and always relates it to your present life. Actually teaches students in a fun interesting way!
Amazing teacher, his lectures are one of the most engaging and interesting you will have at Pierce. John loves cracking jokes and relates history to present day life. Take notes (essay and test solely based on the notes) and if possible don't buy the book as he doesn't use it.
Took Simpson 6 years ago, to this day he is one of the best proffessors ive had, even after attending two 4 year schools. I hated history before, but he found a way to tell it like a bedtime story, i was hooked. very funny and easy class (3 tests). just take notes and you'll do great.
Very helpful teacher. Lectures are actually interesting. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. His only downfall is that this class only have 100 points total in it. There was just two tests both worth 50 points. That's it. No other assignments. So if you mess up your first test you're SOL.
i love simpson. hes not boring to listen to and really knows his history. hes very insightful and i learn a lot from him. he also has a great sense of humor. dont buy the book. its all from his lectures. if you have to take a history class i highly suggest him.
He was the best teacher I've ever had, one of those people you want to model after. Hes very intelligent and very very helpful. Class is NEVER boring. Best teacher in the United States, if you're reading this- Take Him. You won't regret it.
Before I took his courses, I had no interest in the subject. But after I took 1 of his classes, he was the only history prof I wanted to teach me. He teaches through vivid stories and tests on the notes you take during his lectures. 2 tests (Midterm and Final). I highly recommend taking his classes. Great guy!
Great teacher, very helpful and easy to understand. Very knowledgable and will help anyone who needs clarification or just help in his course.
Simp' is not only a great professor, he's also a pretty stand-up guy. Informative and interesting lectures, with a flair for the dramatic. Cares about his students and his community. All you need is ask for clarification and it'll be handed to you wo hesitation. Would take again, no doubt.
Professor Simpson's strength lies in his engaging class lectures. When I signed up to take US History in the evening I thought it was going to be a snore fest, but it was very interesting and entertaining. He connected the past with the present and care what we learned about. We also only had two grades: the midterm and the final!
Best teacher ever! He teaches only in lectures, but he tells history like it's a story which makes it pretty fun. He's makes class interesting even if you're not into history. You hardly use the text book, you only use it 3X a quarter. If you show up to all the classes and take decent notes, you will get a 4.0. Only 2 tests, both multiple choice.
he was my first college professor I've ever had. he is also the best professor I've ever had. i had him at 7am and i didn't mind getting up that early and listening to him speak. it was like a story. he inspired me. everything he says sticks with you. i recommend him to anyone!
Honestly, I hate taking history classes, I find them unbearably boring. However after taking HIST&157 with Simpson, I genuinely became more interested in history. John Simpson teaches history in a story like form. He tends to get off-task but when he does he is very humorous. Overall I think you wont regret taking this class!
Mr. Simpson is engaging, funny, formidably intelligent and adept are taking a student's question and answering it in a very clear and logical fashion. The man cares about his students and his subject matter. He also leads by example, something I found inspiring. I would recommend his classes to anyone seeking to learn.
Simpson gives lectures that are engaging and interesting. Tests include a midterm and final- so study hard and attend class, because your whole grade hangs on those two tests! Explains subject well, answers questions well, and is a reasonable teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed his course!
John Simpson is the best history teacher I have ever had. He makes his lectures relevant to today and its obvious that he's passionate about what he talks about. He loves to makes jokes in class and picks on people (harmless) . He engages people into his lectures and only gives midterm and final. All he asks in return is respect and your attention
Best history teach I've ever had. Is very clear and tells hilarious stories. Honestly, I wish he was my grandfather. He's just really awesome and even if you don't need to take a history class I'd still say to take one of his just because they are that great. If you take okay notes the class is an easy A.
Without a doubt one of the greatest instructorspeople I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is genuine and willing to go above and beyond to help students succeed, even in matters that do not pertain to his classes. This is coming from someone that had no interest in this class and barely passed. He is the best instructor Pierce College has.
Professor Simpson is very clear and keeps you engaged in the lectures, he also is able to make the subject important to you even though you didn't think it would be.
The best professor I probably will ever have. He has made history (something I've struggled with) so interesting and simple for me! I wish I had him for every subject. He's an awesome man with a lot of background so he knows what he's talking about. Partaking in class is important. He loves questions. And only 2 quizzes for the whole quarter.
Makes learning history fun, always able to relate events from 200BC to now. Couldn't make it anymore clear. I wish I could take him more. Lectures everyday, so its important to be there to take the notes. He's very understandable.
Professor Simpson is a great teacher. He relates all his lectures to current matters and is willing to answer any questions. He is easy to approach and talk to and I would recommend anyone to take him.
Best professor you could ever have for History. He's the most helpful prof I've ever had
A dang good teacher. One of the best I've ever had. He's genuine, approachable, easy to understand, passionate, fair and balanced, it was a good experience. I have retained nearly everything from his courses. I ended up taking all but one of his classes the college had to offer. I recommend him.
Best teacher I have had. Not an easy course but only two tests and the lectures are fantastic!
Alright everyone says he is great and to me he isn't bad if you are able to listen to lectures all day then take this class. Me personally I have to be organized when I take notes and it's hard when he jumps around. I will be taking my next history class with someone else. The class would be so much better if we could use notes.
Simpson is amazing! He is not like any other professor you will ever have. He tells you how it is and will relate to your life! I would recommend him to anyone. Just make sure that if you have questions not be afraid to ask
Cool dude. Cares about his job and has funny stories. 10/10
Even if you have absolutely no interest in history at all take all of his classes immediately. He is awesome.
He's one of the best professors at the college. He has many years of experience and his class only has 2 tests; a mid term and a final. Great teacher overall. Really entertaining lectures and very fun. Guarantee that you'll never fall asleep in his class.
His grading scale is all messed up. You can a 90% and have a 3.0. Classes are cancelled a lot of the times since he is a very active man. By active I mean he's involved in his community and such. I enjoyed his class a lot however his grading scale is awful.
Mr. Simpson Is an amazing professor, during his lectures he goes into great depth and will stop if anyone is confused or needs to ask a question. Very respectable to students. World history of Civilization was an awesome class to take during Winter Quater.
I took several of his history classes
He's amazing! He makes history so much fun and always has us at the edge of our seats wanting to learn more! He's always very welcoming and kind:)
Seriously the most amazing professor you will ever take! He lectures through story telling and everything is so interesting. I wrote down almost everything he said and starred everything he wrote on the board. He offers extra credit and if you try hard he will boost your grade A LOT at the end of the quarter! Great guy and is super helpful.
Awesome teacher. Very very knowledgeable.
Mr. Simpson is an amazing professor. You have a midterm (worth 50 points) and a final (worth 50 points). The lectures are informative and he has no trick questions on tests. He will have to miss days on occasion but when he goes he has the optional opportunity for extra credit. Although attendance isn't graded it is really important to prepare.
Amazing knowledgeable professor, willing to answer any and all questions. The best alongside Norm Komnick professor's at Pierce College.
Wonderful lectures! Very informative and fun. He makes history seem like a story he is telling. Very lenient in grading and laid back! The text is not required, but the essays are based on readings in the book. If you attend lectures and take good notes, you should be fine!
do the papers and you're good
Simpson was great, funny guy. I had to take his evening classes for both HIST&156 and &157. If Simpson wasn't teaching, I would have skipped this class everyday. He made History very interesting and told it like a story. He grades papers leniently and he makes his own tests, which are fairly easy if you pay attention and take notes on his lectures.
Great lectures, only has a midterm and final test. Ask questions, show interest, and you'll be fine. He does an amazing job of presenting history in an unbiased fashion, and keeps you engaged. A note: if you want to earn a little more favor, go get coffee from Primo coffee in Lakewood- he owns it, and he'll like you for supporting his business.
What everyone else said, just a great teacher.
Great teacher, even better lectures take notes and youll be fine. Only 2 tests, multiple choice. Attendance doesnt matter but always get the notes from someone in class if you miss one
I LOVED MR. SIMPSON! There was never a dull moment in his class. Like other people have said, although attendance is not graded, it is my recommendation that you do your best to show up every day. He is so passionate about history and the way Mr. Simpson teaches it is unlike any other teacher. He is a great guy, I very much enjoyed his class.
My best professor in Pierce College. You should take him!!!!
Its an easy class. There is one test mid quarter and one at the end, no final. Both test are easy(multiple choice and 1 essay question each), some extra credit and basically all you'll be graded on. His lectures are great , funny, and will assign readings once in a while.
AMAZING teacher! Mr. Simpson brings passion into his lectures and uses modern day examples to explain his lectures further. He gives a solid lecture every day that keeps you at the edge of your seat from start to finish. He also likes to lighten up the mood with a few jokes which I appreciated as an early morning student. Great class content!
Mr. Simpson was such a good teacher. He tells history like a story which made it 10 times more interesting. The only tests are the midterm and the final, which he reviews the day before. Attendance is important but as long as you get the notes from someone else and show up on review days you'll be fine.
John Simpson was great. The classes were interesting and easy to pass as long as you pay attention. He also owns Primo Espresso in Lakewood by O'Reilly's Auto Parts and Jack in the Box and they offer a discount for pierce college students.
Definitely my favorite professor that I've had so far. Gives lectures like a story which makes them a lot more interesting, and there's no homework, only a midterm and a final. He's super nice and caring and I've stayed after class to just talk with him. Sadly he's retiring, but he owns a coffee stand nearby and pierce students get discounts.
Simpson's class was my favorite class I've ever taken. Although it was a lot of lectures and note taking, the way he taught made me want to come back the next day and learned what happened next. All in all, his class was amazing and 100% worth taking
Mr. Simpson was my teacher many years back but yet I still remember the class, professor Simpson gave everyone the opportunity to do well. If you engage in the class discussion and participate it will go smoother than if you did not. Mr. Simpson is one of the best History teacher that I've come across in a long time.
