If you're not interested in soc., take it anyway, he is hot

format of class is like DOC 1 but with 2 papers and no midterm. He keeps the class entertained with his own dorkiness and personality quirks. Follows his overhead outline which makes it really easy to follow. He's a lot better than the other DOC2 teachers!
Great teacher. He is knowledgeable on his topic and keeps things interesting. He enjoys his students and makes attempts to get to know as many of them as possible. And hey, if you like smart, funny, good looking professors, I recommend a seat in the front. He kept me awake this quarter;)
Intelligent and humorous professor. He actually makes DOC seem interesting.
Skretny is a very funny professor. He makes going toclass enjoyable although the cases that are being taught aren't so interesting. He's a good professor- gives good notes, explains clearly and adds relevent stories here and there for comic relief. He is also interactive with the students.
He is a GREAT lecturer! He is engaging, funny, explains the material well, and he actually seems to care about students as individuals! Skrentny is hot!
he's a hilarious teacher and his examples (and side commentary) keeps you engaged. The course material is layed out for you w/ his outline of the cases which definitely helped w/ the 2 papers and final.
Extremely funny, and outgoing. I like the fact that he's able to relate to students and build good communications both in class and outside! We need more professor like SKRENTY! NICE and CUTE..
This class rocks my socks! Take it if you like to talk about sociology or just body image in general. Skrentny is so fun and easy to talk to in class. I recommend to all freshmen to try to get in this class.
He's the first professor that i actually understood what he was talking about. He's got good sense of humor. Plus, he thought at Korea!!One of my fav professors!
This class is super interesting and lectures are fun and make you want to attend. Skrentny is super funny and keeps you laughing the entire time. I would take any class that he is teaching, regardless of the topic. Hot too!!
I was totally dreading taking this class because it's on theory, but he made it so interesting by relating ideas to everyday life. It became my favorite class. GREAT lecturer and wants to know his students and get to know them. Take him as often as you can!
I didn't really want to take this class (marshall GE), but Skrentny made it enjoyable. He is a great prof, he is funny and makes the material enganging. I will definitely be signing up to take a class with him again if I get the chance.
seriously my favorite doc professor. he made lecture so interesting and kept everyone engaged while he was speaking. i wish all of my professors were like that.
He does a really good job keeping the interest of the students, putting in pop culture references and actively seeking student participation. He's really intelligent and knows his stuff. By far the best DOC professor (unless you get Prof. Shragge next year), it'd be a mistake not to take him.
this is by far the BEST prof i've had at UCSD. he is interesting and makes you want to go to class. so helpful, found for me many helpful resources. tests are ok, go to lectures and be familiar with readings and u should be fine. i am taking every class he offers. genuinely cares for his students, highly recommend...funny and in a cute way ;o)

I thought Skrentny's lectures were unclear and politically charged. He had a strong resentment for minorities who identified with their ethnic group. He has always been part of the conservative 'good-ol'-boy' network that has actively sought to keep prog
great prof
This guy is hilarious; if you want to go to class and not be bored out of your mind, it's professors like this that keep you going. Admittedly some days are slow, but he tries to spice things up with guest lectures and movies and stuff he tapes from CNN himself. The best teacher I've taken at UCSD in my two years hear, far and away.
He's way cool. I really enjoyed taking his class. His lectures are interesting enough, and the material wasn't so bad either. For an easy GE class, I'd take his.
great lecturer. really funny, great sense of humor, and interesting. theories can be boring but he relates it to modern situations which makes it a lot easier and much more interesting. very straightforward lecturer. never missed a class even on days where i dont even feel like going!
amaazing professor
Nothing particularly novel in any of his lectures. However, the test required more than he providedin class. Exams were a more diffucult than expected, largely because they were graded obviously by the TAs. If you dont like the judiciary you'll see eye to eye with him. Make trite and simple comments which substantiate what he lectures and he'll pr
Prof Skretny is really good at lecturing. His class is very interesting and he really helps students engage in the material. I enjoyed the class a lot, but the tests are difficult. You have to really go in depth as far as answering his test questions. Definetly not an easy A, but definetly worth taking anyways.
Social Theory is a tough class. The readings are dense and painful. Prof. Skrentny does a great job cutting through the fog and making sense of very difficult material. He applies contemporary examples to the therories so that students can relate. It is tough course, but overall, Skrentny makes it bearable. Grading is done by TA's from sections.
Nice professor, tough class to get an A. has to really understand the material - readings are helpful but section gives summaries of readings so reading not necessary. attending lectures is a must to do well on tests. prof genuinely wants to get to know students (helps if he knows you). sometimes kinda scary when he picks on ppl to answer questions
A charasmatic prof who makes lecs bearable. The reading is interesting if law is your thing. Not a difficult class.
Professor Skrentny is great! His lectures are clear, easy to follow, and facilitates note-taking. Reading is useful, but his lectures alone can get you an A. There was one midterm, one final... weighed equally (50%). Skrentny's also a funny guy and actually understands the students. The class topic was employment law.
BEST PROFESSOR @ UCSD! Cant wait to take ano class. only a midterm & final so must study. ALL about lecture. I got an A & never opened the book but went to every lecture which I loved all of them. Learned a LOT too- made me like school! Amusing guy, pretty easy class, fun topic, can't wait to take another Skrentny class!
I LOVED this guy! he is really funny and made lectures interesting b/c he had great stories to keep you awake..plus...he is SOOO hot!
Great Professor!! He's really funny and uses a lot of real life experiences as examples in class, which is really helpful. He's really nice, and I highly recommend him as a professor.
Awesome class and prof. 2 midterms and a final, none were cumulative. Go to lecture, he goes over everything important. Interesting lectures, ok reading load (read lots of court cases), tests were often hypothetical situations based on what we discussed. Great class, recommend it 100%. Interesting and not too hard.
Hey, hey, hey, this professor is a Great Conversationalist. He teaches with Zip. His take on the Fifties Man phenomenon is unique. You'd have to be hit on the head with a big clown wrench not to take this teacher. He should be teaching in the New Building.
Awesome professor! makes the class interesting by bringing up random, funny examples with the material. Class is interesting by itself but Professor makes it even better!Take Him! you won't regret it.
He is a really great prof but it's not as easy to get an A as some of the other soc classes available. I did all of my reading, attended class, and presented a good essay for the final and got a B without much of a reason why I didn't get into the A range. My study group experienced the same kind of deal. I'd recommend but now w/ a ton of enthusias
This guy is the best. period.
This guy is the best lecturer you will ever have. He should be a comedian for sure. Class is 3 hours but it helps a lot when he is cracking jokes and sometimes the students jump in too. On top of that, he is approachable outside of class. Best professor at UCSD no doubt!!!
He is wonderful, his lectures are interactive and his humor is contagious. His charisma is endless. Take his classes, even though he only teaches two. However, you can only get his class if you have a lot of credits as a freshmen in Marshall, good luck.
He is charismatic and cracks a lot of funny jokes/tells funny stories in class. He is also very eloquent and tries to interact with the class, which makes lecture fun. His lectures are enjoyable- take him. Your grade depends solely on your TA. :)
Skrentny is really down to earth and he's humorous. His lectures are VERY organized, clear, and easy to follow. DOC2 itself can be very boring, but he makes it bearable, and he is very knowledgeable in the subject. Take good notes and pay attention to lectures because the midterm and final are very much based on the lectures.
BEST professor at UCSD! Funny, engaging, and helpful. Lecture topics can be dull, but he makes it bearable. Grades are up to TAs; I had a terrible one (overly ideological left-wing nut--and yes, W is dumb and I voted for Obama). Will be taking his other classes!
Great professor! His lectures are interesting and keep you focused, but at times he goes a little too fast when lecturing. Bring a laptop or learn to write fast. Tests are not too bad, but get very specific at times. You may lose points by just forgetting to specify a country or person's name. Rene is a good TA, goes over things very thoroughly.
Great professor. Gives direct main points of the readings. Lectures can be interesting, but other times boring. Sometimes he goes fast because he falls behind and tries to catch up, but only because he likes to engage with students. Exams are keypoints he brings up in lecture. Go to them, they are rather interesting
Professor Skrentny is stellar lecturer and a fair man. My only gripe is his trick questions of his exams.
take him for doc 2. very entertaining lecturer. reading is boring, but he summarizes the key points and gives you an idea of what he wants. very easy midterm. final was an essay and short answers, not too bad. grade is based on TA.
If you're going to suffer through a 20+ page paper, you might as well go through it with Skrentny. He's charismatic, communicates his expertise really well, and genuinely likes hearing what you have to say. He's also not afraid to call you out for slacking off.
Very interesting guy, really funny and makes an effort to get to know his students. Makes everything totally relate-able. If you go to discussions and class, the readings aren't very necessary. However, SHOW UP TO LECTURES!! Has op quizzes, but are sooooo easy. Literally meant to reward students who come to lecture.
Took him in the winter, awesome professor. There's a lot of readings but he walks through each one and goes over the important points even if you don't read everything. His exams are pretty easy-keep things cut throat straight. You should go to lecture to do well in the class. If you don't, you're setting yourself up to fail.
Super cool professor. Very intelligent but also interacts well with students, even in a big lecture hall like center. He's very modest as well. Always talked about when he went to school in Massachusetts and Indiana but never mentioned that he actually went to Harvard. Very humble. Also, pee before midterms and finals cause he wont let you
Skrentny was one of the best professors I have had so far! Real cool dude, makes you laugh during lecture but you also learn a lot! Would definitely take another class taught by him.
Not the best sociologist I have met, but he is ok. Teaches very informal way and it is very difficult to distinguish what is his opinion and what is the actual material.
I took his class Fall of 2014 and I will probably never forget him. He is one of those professors that is just a roadblock in students' educational career. He is careless, indifferent, unprepared to teach, and often contradictory. Can't prioritize meaningfully, research is more important to him than his students, and this is a Sociologist.
Prof Skrenty was great, if you go to his lectures you will have everything you need for his course, he is clear, funny, charismatic and smart.
Fantastic prof! Lectures are very clear, concise, engaging and really interesting. Outlines his lecture with important topics on the board to help keep you on track while he talks. He only talks, no writing. So make sure you write notes! Exams were very straight forward and representative of the lecture/reading. Also, he's really funny! Take him!
He's a great professor! Clear outlines, explaining key concepts in readings concisely, humorous. He has lots experience to share to illustrate the sociological terms. I would definitely take his class again.
Awesome lecturer, pay attention in lectures(take notes) and study will before the exam, then you should be good to go.
I took SOCI 1 with Skrentny and he made me feel sure abut declaring my major as Sociology. His lectures are interesting and he has a great sense of humor. He interacts with the students a lot. You don't really need to do the readings, as long as you study the notes that he writes on the board. The midterm and final are pretty easy!
Such a great class! Although it was a 3 hours he kept it interesting. Hes very smart and definitely knows what he is talking about. Great at presenting the material. There are readings and two exams. If you just show up and take notes, you'll get a good grade. He goes over all the readings in lecture, and not to mention he's super hot ;)
He's honestly the best professor I've ever had. In SOCI 1 he didn't use slides at all, only wrote an outline on the board and then spoke, but I hold that I learned the most from his class than any other class I've taken. He's super engaging and fun to listen to and learn from. I had a lot of fun in his class.
Skrentny's class for SOCI is just him talking at you with an outline on the chalk board but he isn't boring at all. He has a great personality and is very engaging.
absolutely love him, he's funny and made the lecture enjoyable, attendance is not mandatory but I just love going to his class
I love professor Skrentny. Not only was the material interesting but he made lectures fun. 10/10 would definitely recommend hes only the best professor Ive had
Prof. Skrentny is charismatic and makes every lecture interesting. He uses real-life examples to relate the material to us. The tests are easy and the readings are not necessary to do well on them (as long as you attend lectures). I wholly recommend this professor.
A great instructor! He's pretty funny and relatable, and it's easy to take notes based just off of what he says. He frequently engages the class to promote discussion. When he lectures he seems pretty passionate and engaged himself, just show up to lecture and take notes, you should be fine.
Skrentny was an amazing professor. He made it really interesting to learn the material and its really to take notes even if he only outlines in the chalkboard. The midterm and the final were easy to do especially since he outlines what he wants in them during lecture . Definitely would take again
Professor Skrentny provides great insight into the topic, managing to provide a lot of information and all the while keeping the class very interesting. He's a great professor and cares a lot about what he's teaching which is always really valuable. Also really funny, which is just another plus.
Prof. Skrentny is a funny and informative instructor, and I would highly recommend taking any of his courses. He's really charismatic, and instead of constantly lecturing, he often likes to discuss the info he's sharing to the students, wanting to know more about our opinions. Overall enjoyable class with a great prof.
Skrentny is by far the best humanities professor in UCSD. Being in the class itself was simply amazing. His lectures were very interesting and he supports class discussions. I highly recommend him.
Skrentny makes you work for that midterm and final grade, but his lectures prepare you for it. SECTION is mandatory and will help identify the most important parts. Skrentny likes to make his class giggle - I don't like him as a person, but he is a SOLID PROF and you should take his class.
Skrentny's super funny and engaging. There aren't podcasts or slides, he just walks around with a piece of paper and goes from that, so you have to show up to class (or at least get notes). However, lectures are still interesting and you don't really have to do the reading because he goes over everything. Overall, 10/10 would recommend.
Prof Skrentny is a solid choice. The grade for the class depends on the TA, they are the ones to grade midterm and paper. The class consists of one midterm, one research paper, and final. If you get a laid back TA should be an easy A. (:
Skrentny is such an amazing prof! Basically, you just need to do weekly readings (don't even need to read them but as long as you skim and get the main idea) but he goes more into detail with them during lecture, so just pay attention. Lecture is not even boring bc he jokes, etc. 10/10
Professor Skrentny is inexperienced and unprofessional when it comes to teaching difficult topics. His communication skills are not well honed and he has difficulty maintaining proper eye contact during his conduct with his students. He does not adequately respond questions and leaves open ends in his answers. Overall I would not recommend him.
Absolutely amazing professor! His lectures are well prepared and very well organized. He is very knowledgeable about the field he's teaching. There are lots of readings but he will go over them in class which is very helpful. Definitely go to lectures because they will help you will exams. Also one group project. Wisely select your group mates.
This was a three hour class, once a week but it did no feel like three hours. The professor knows how to get your attention and keeps you engage in the class. Also, he has really good T/As. He just talks during the whole lecture and you have to keep taking notes because there is not course material posted.
Skrentny is a really solid professor, I took SOCI1 with him too. He's a great lecturer and he puts up his outline on the chalkboard and you just have to take good notes. He goes over readings too so while it is a good idea to do them you can probably get by without having to. One of my favorite professors, he's a good one.
inexperienced, does not explain well, unprepared lecture material.
I love professor Skrentny. His lectures were very funny and entertaining. The class itself is very easy and the material is interesting.
The worst Sociology professor on UCSD campus. His interaction with students is fake and he doesn't know the subject well. Lots of questions are unanswered or brushed off. Steer clear from any of his classes.
Too dependent on his TAs. This would be fine, if they at least spoke adequate English. His class is a bit overwhelming with his traditional lecture habits. Seems knowledgeable, but an intro to law and its impact on society course should be taught by someone who has, at the bear minimum, worked in the field of law. Reflects his character I suppose.
Prof Skentny was and still is to date the best professor I have had here at UCSD. He doen't use lecture slides but his lectures still remain entertaining. I look forward to taking more of his classes in the future.
Class is not mandatory but he doesn't use slides or does podcasts so in order to get away without doing the readings (which are offered online) you won't do well unless you get notes from friend. Keeps lectures interesting by joking around and involving students. Great teacher and class material is intriguing.
Professor Skrentny's 3-hour lecture was the class I most looked forward to all week. Kept things relevant by providing present-day examples. No clickers but attending lectures is the only way to learn the material and pass. The course was graded on one midterm, one final, and discussion attendance.
I waited a whole year to take SOCI 50 so I could take it with Skrentny! My friends and I love him. This was a 3 hour class, yet he always keeps everyone engaged, interacts with students a lot, and is super entertaining. He doesn't use slides, but just walks around talking, so if you don't go to class or get notes.. that's rough. Class is fun tho:)
Professor Skrentny is an engaging, experienced professor. He explains topics thoroughly, highlights the more significant aspects of the assigned readings, and then adds in additional relevant examples to ensure understanding. Hands down one of the best classes I've ever taken at UCSD.
Professor Skrentny was the best! An amazing and funny guy and always kept us engage in the 3-hour lecture. He highlights what he is going to cover and tells you what may be on the final. Just show up and take notes, you should be able to pass. He doesn't have lecture slides or podcast, so make a friend if you plan to miss class. Best soci prof!
Prof. Skrentny has been one my favorite professors thus far! He's clear, to the point, he tells jokes, and cares for this class. Although it was a three hour lecture, he'd let us eat in class and have a 10-15 minute break about halfway through. There are no slides/podcast, so make sure to take notes and look at readings, though he goes over them.
Hes makes lectures interesting and cracks jokes all the time. Exams are fair and theres a project in the middle of the quarter.
Too sporadic for me.
Professor Skrentny is one of my favorite professors personality and teaching wise. He is passionate about what he does and makes an effort to make sure students understand the material taught in class.
Online class through a podcast. Weekly readings help understand lectures. Only met virtually with TA weekly, no other interaction. Grade made up of 3 assignment which makes it hard to raise your grade. One interview project throughout the quarter, midterm, and final is all you do aside from reading. Straightforward class w/ different topics
His lectures (although not mandatory) were very engaging and after the hour and a half you would want to stay for more. He assigns readings that are relevant to today and never exceed more than 20 pages. If you read and take notes in lectures you'll get an easy pass. Weekly discussion will change with the TA you get but otherwise amazing class!
This teacher was the only reason I showed up to lecture in person. Attendance is not mandatory and the class is podcasted. He makes sure to make things as clear as possible for those listening on podcast (e.g. drawings on board, repeating student questions on mic). The only attendance required are discussion sections once a week, TA's grade as well
There are only 4 things you will be graded on: 1 midterm, 1 interview paper, 1 final and participation. You can do the tests up to 5 people and there are only 5 questions, so you will finish early and have lots of time. Lectures were so fun but sometimes I dozed off... There are lots of reading but if you skim through it ur fine.
Definitely recommend going to his lectures in person, he is very sociable and funny. The midterms and final projects he gives are completely fair and can be done in groups. Overall just a fun and easy class to take with a great professor who is excited to be there every day.
Lectures were 10/10. The time went really quickly as he always seemed to curate an encaptivating lecture. He likes to relate to the lecture hall audience and create personal relations with his students. Material was quite interesting, which made it easy to study for. Exams allotted a big time frame for essay response questions.
Attendance was not mandatory but he made going to lecture worthwhile. He actively engaged with students throughout lecture which made time go by fast in class. Overall an amazing and interesting class!
Attendance is not mandatory but recommended because it is easier to concentrate and entertaining. TA discussions are mandatory but also entertaining. Make sure to meet people in your section because you have a project. Easy and fun class definitely recommend.
great class to get a GE out of the way while still taking an enjoyable class. prof is really nice and responds to emails quickly, TAs were really nice. discussions were mandatory but lectures were podcasted and not mandatory (as of fall 2022). i would totally recommend taking this class!
Professor Skretny is very passionate about teaching and that makes his class so much more interesting. This was a great introductory class!
Professor Skrentny made lectures intriguing and he interacts during lecture making it very engaging. They are podcasted but he just doesn't use slides or anything mainly just speaks so I found it easier going to lecture. Overall recommend taking the class with him.
Pretty easy class as long as you pay attention in lectures and take good notes. Lectures are optional but section is mandatory, lots of readings but you can get by without doing most of them because he goes over all the main points from the readings in the lecture. Only grades on midterm, final, participation and a research paper.
Great professor. Get ready to take notes during class because that will be most important for the exams.
If you can take his class DO IT! Absolutely one of the best professors. He was very engaging and I really like the way he teaches. There is a group project but it's not that hard. All tests (2) are in person and free response but it's fairly easy.
1 group proj that req essay writing. 2 other exams (free response) based on lectures (not mandatory, but he doesnt post any material online so its best to attend). TAs were really easy graders
Lectures are entertaining but they aren't podcasted.Taking good notes is essential since what he goes over in lectures is what the midterm and exam will be on.There is one project which is fairly easy.Midterm and final are free response and he gives options on which questions you wish to answer.Discussion attendance and participation are required.
Such a great professor, he makes lectures very interesting! The class is not hard and the material is well understandable. I recommend!
Prof Skrentny was really funny and engaging. You have to pay attention in class because none of the lectures are recorded or have slides. While that seems daunting, the lectures are actually quite entertaining. Tests are written but give you several questions to choose from. Study main cases and topics.
Class structure was unorganized. Only being graded on attendance, participation and final paper. Lectures were interesting. I don't think we talked about climate change thru a sociological perspective enough, felt like the discussion was too broad.
Awesome professor! Lectures were always very engaging, and he always made the effort to talk to students before lecture.
Professor Skrentny is the BEST professor that I have taken so far at UCSD. He cares so much about his students and explains topics very well and straightforward with lots of examples. His exams are in person essays but he gives you options to choose from so it's not bad. I really wish I was a Sociology major to be able to take more classes with him
One of my favourite classes I've taken at UCSD. Grade consists of 3 essay exams taken in class as well as section attendance and participation. There is a lot of reading but I did not do any of it and got an A+. Lecture attendance is not mandatory but I'd recommend going if you don't do the readings, also they're fun!
Professor Skrentny's lectures are engaging and worth attending, even though they aren't recorded. Focus on taking good notes - that's key for the exams. The workload is manageable, and Unstuckstudy proved helpful for my study prep.
Professor Skrentny is an amazing lecturer. You can tell that he not only enjoys teaching but also the subject he's teaching. Your grade is comprised of two exams, discussion attendance, and an interview project. This course is very reading-heavy. To fully understand the material for exams, you should read the readings as well as attend lectures.
1 midterm, 1 project, and 1 final. TA's are tough graders. His lectures have no slideshows and he talks throughout the whole lecture. A lot of reading so be prepared. His lectures don't have much information in them. Lectures are not mandatory but I recommend you go if you don't want to read the articles. He's a nice teacher but he is boring.
He doesn't like tech, so there are no slides, and you get EVERYTHING from lecture (based on readings), so if you don't go or read, you may be lost. He also gets really sidetracked, so you never know what to take notes on--simple concepts though. so it's kinda annoying, but easy if you pay attention
