One of the worst profs I've every had! John is in charge of the graduate accounting program and is not going anywhere anytime soon. Dodge his class at all costs! He is not only a very difficult prof, but believes accounting is all common sense and doesn't explain concepts.
He is HORRIBLE! If you want to have a teacher that is extremely arrogant and can not teach at all then by all means take him! He acts like everything he teaches is common sense that you should know it already. Our class went from 150 people in the begining to about 30 in the end!(most of the 30 failed!) NEVER TAKE HIM!Worst teacher I have ever had!
This the toughest professor I ever had but also the best. If you do not want to learn then do not take him but if you want to, definitely take him. Now I know why he was voted MBA teacher of the year in 2009.
great prof overall and good class if you go
I have Professor Smigla now for Managerial Accounting and I had him last semester for Financial Accounting. I also plan on taking him for Intermediate Accounting in the fall. If you are an accounting major, definitely take him since you will learn a lot. He is the best teacher I ever had and he gives you great notes and covers all the homework t
I took another professor last semester for managerial accounting and withdrew because he was terrible. Accounting is not my major but Smigla makes it understandable and interesting. He actually teaches you!!! He is not easy but you will learn and just keep up with the homework and be prepared to work hard.
I am not an accounting major and asked around before I took Professor Smigla. A few said he was terrible but good students like him and said he was excellent. He is an excellent teacher but be prepared to work more in his course than most other courses.
Great teacher. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Be prepared to work hard and do homework. If you come to class and participate you will learn the material and make a good grade.
Smigla is an excellent professor. I am a non traditional student and came back last year after 8 years off to take ACC 202. Now have him for ACC 301 this semester. He is very fair and helpful. Just show up, do your homework, listen to Smigla and you will do fine if you have half a brain.
I took Smigla for Financial Accounting and he has made the course interesting enough that I now plan to major in accounting. He is not easy but just do your homework and go to class, and you will do well.
He is a superb professor and make sure you keep up with the homework. Work extra hard for him because he decides if you get into the MSACC program.
I wish I would have taken Professor Smigla for intermedate 1 the first time. He is a great teacher and I strongly recommend him over the other guy.
Prof Smigla was my professor almost 10 years ago. His class was very challenging, but very fair. I learned alot in his class, and as a result am using the skills i learned in his class as a launching pad for a successful career in accounting. I highly recommend, for those serious about accounting, signing up for his course.
Awesome teacher. He was very nice and would take the time to help you with any questions. I wish more profs were like him and I highly recommend Smigla.
I took Prof Smigla for intermediate accounting 1 and I wish I would have had him for my earlier accounting classes. He is excellent and I highly recommend him
I worked my butt off and only earned a B in Smigla's class. This prof is not easy so be prepared to do a lot of homework if you decide to take him. He is an excellent teacher and does explain things well, however, he is very demanding. In my other classes I earned A grades and spent less than half the time.
He is very hard and you must keep up with the work and go to class. I realized halfway through the semester that I had not put enough work in during the beginning so I am retaking the course but he is a good teacher is you try and work hard...very hard, the workload is terrible though
Although Smigla is a nice guy and very informative, he is too demanding and test are difficult. I am a non accounting major and it was hell. The final exam was worth double the normal exams . I barely passed with a C. However, if you talk to him during office hours and come to class, it helps. But I don't recommend him for non-accounting majors
I really hated this class. He seems like a nice guy, but his tests are really difficult and for no reason. This should be an Intro to ACC class but he makes it very hard. I studied for days and still barely passed. I would not take him ever again.
I had intermediate 1 with Prof Smigla almost 2 years ago and he was tough but excellent. The best I had at UK! I selected him as my adviser and he was great. He advised me with preparing for the GMAT, getting an internship and getting into the MSACC program. Nice guy and he will really help you out.
I don't know what to think about Smigla actually. I had started taking 201 with Miller and that was horrible and I took a W. Then I tried it online but couldn't teach myself. Now I may have to retake it again. He is knowledge and very demanding. You have to go to class!!! I learned more from him than in previous accounting experiences.
Words cannot begin to describe how much I hated this class. The material was interesting, but the exams were insane. Over half of my class failed and he refused to curve the grade. The exams together are worth almost 4/5 of your grade. I would avoid him at all costs.
I worked my butt off and only earned a B gade. Excellent teacher but exams are difficult.
Smigla is awesome. Really knows his stuff. Exams are somewhat difficult but he tells you what to study. Definitely recommend!
I have never been more disappointed in a class in my entire life. How this professor can teach this class like it is a masters level class and then when you take his first exam and out of 44 students 1 gets an A, 6 a B, 8 a C, 14 a D and 15 a 59 or below. His response to this is this the worst class he has ever taught. I would never EVER recommend!
His teaching style was awful. Will not tell you why you got a hw problem wrong. Only reason to attend class was bc attendance is required. More than 70% of my class got less than a C in the 1st exam. He made me reconsider my major. If you have a choice take Jane wells or Cynthia miller for 301. Avoid him at all cost or you will regret it!!!
Smigla is tough but really knows his stuff. He actually teaches you an explains the reasoning behind all the rules and requirements. If you are serious take him, if not then find someone easier.
I had him in the evening MBA program I think he is the best professor I ever had. Some say he is really difficult and I did not think the financial section he taught was that difficult. He is not easy but as long as you do the homework you will do fine.
Great class and I found it to be be very interesting compared to most other courses. I definitely recommend him especially if you are an accounting major.
Excellent class! The material is tricky and he is tough, but if you put in the work, you will do well and have a solid foundation in accounting. As an accounting major, I am very happy I had him and feel as though I am well prepared for my future accounting courses.
DO NOT TAKE SMIGA IF YOU ARE NOT AN ACCOUNTING MAJOR. I spent at least 2 hours every night on the homework and barely passed his class. The work you will have to do is not worth the grade you will get. He also has a 4 hour, 100 question comprehensive final, in which a majority of the questions are workout problems. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, TRUST ME.
I just finished this class and can say I really enjoyed it. If you are an accounting major take it with Smigla. It is a hard class but if you do the work and ask him questions in and outside of class he is always willing to help. He will teach you a lot of stuff and prepare you for future courses. Also, he is a great advisor for accounting majors.
Smigla is a great professor. He may come across as intimidating but he really wants his students to succeed. Not an Easy class by any means. It's the hardest class i've taken in college and i was shy 6 points from an A but the knowledge gained was well worth it. If you're an Accounting Major, you can't go wrong with Smigla. be ready to work hard
Explains very well, and is very helpful with questions. Assigns homework every day, but it's short and it really helps you understand the material. Doesn't give any points back. I was 0.1% from an A, and he would not round me up, so I got a B. But he will make sure you know the material and remember it for a long time.
I learned more than any other class and he is an excellent professor. Be prepared to work for your grade in this class!
I took intermediate over with him and I wish I would have had him the first time. Just do as he tells you and he does explain everything well and is very thorough covering the homework. I know I am better prepared for 302 even though I earned just a B grade.
I have never had trouble with terrible professors until I had this professor. He will not go out of his way to help anyone, he teaches directly by the book and homework's. Terrible at answering questions regarding the homework. I stuck through the class until the end and I can say over 60% of the class did not pass and he doesn't care.
I did not find Smigla to be as difficult as some students say. Don't miss class since you will really fall behind and keep up with the homework. Listen to him when preparing for exams and do your homework. I did learn more in his class than any other class at UK so far. Excellent Prof!
Not helpful during office hours. Goes over homework with you. Has homework due every class and calls on you for answers. Pretty straightforward and knowledgeable
Smigs is a really good professor and I learned a lot during his 4 week summer class. Just dont get behind, I was not an accounting major and liked his class.
ACC 302 is a breeze since I had him for ACC 301. Definitely recommend and he is an awesome teacher.
Do the homework and take notes in class and you will be fine. Logic is key to passing the exams and class, don't memorize, just understand why things happen the way they do. you will have homework after every class, get to it asap and it makes it much easier.
By no means an easy class. Its not impossible to get an A, but expect to work really hard for it. Must do the hw assigned for every class. Can come across as mean because he's intimidating, especially in lecture, but is super nice during office hours. Best professor for accounting majors, as you'll learn the most, not so much for non-majors.
Smigla is a very very mean man. If you have the chance to take someone else, DO IT. He is very rude to his students and constantly belittles them. I took this class in Fall 2015 and after the first exam, half the class dropped, and eventually, before I left, there were a max of 10 students in his class. Do not take him.
Prof Smigla is one of those professors that students absolutely love or hate. I am one of the latter. He is TOUGH, but fair. If you read, do your homework, and take time to actually study, you will do well. Talk to him in his office hours. Learn from your mistakes, the material builds on itself. You may not get an A, but you'll LEARN all you need.
I took him for ACC 201 and I did not find his course to be that difficult. Just keep with the homework and study his lecture notes and you will do well. I would take him again and he was very helpful when I had questions.
I got a B in the class and if I would have spent more time I know I could have an A grade. I'm not an accounting major but he did make the course interesting. He seems intimidating since he is a very serious teacher and wants you to learn but he is a really nice guy. He will answer all your questions and help you during office hours. Recommend.
I'm an Accounting major currently in 302 and i took Smigla over a year ago for 201. Here's my 2cents: If you're an ACC major, Taking Smigla for foundational classes like 201 will help you SO MUCH down the road. Trust me when i say Accounting builds on top of each other. Smigla is Hard. But who ever said Accounting was easy?!
I also had prof Smigs for 201 and 202 is much easier. He teaches the class the same but the material is just a whole lot easier. I had a low B with him in 201 and have a high A grade in 202. His lectures are excellent and he covers the homework in detail and will answer questions. I highly recommend him for either course and especially 202.
Smigla is going to humble you on the first day with a graded quiz. You're going to do homework for every class and you're not going to know how to do it even though you go to every lecture so you'll have to look up the answers online. Everyone will drop out and you'll be feeling like The Few. The Proud. The Marines. All he serves is L's on exams
I took this professor for 201 during summer 1 and 202 during summer 2 and WOW am I glad. I aced the assessment exam in 301 and intermediate accounting is actually easy because of him! While others are struggling in 301 I know it. He explains things really well and shows you how to think so you end up remembering it all. Just work hard.
BEST ADVICE FOR SMIGLA: If you are not an accounting major do NOT take his class! 6+ hours of homework each week and exams are VERY thorough. He clearly states this is a continuous study course and that is 100% true. This is an intensely detailed course geared toward ACC majors. Save yourself from the stress and do not take from him nonACC majors!!
I am not an accounting major, and this class has been the bane of my existence. Smigla loves the subject, and knows his content, but he does not sugar coat anything. He is very thorough, which I think is what made it so difficult. Great professor if you are an accounting/finance major, but I'd advise to not take him if you aren't.
He's exam are very very hard. He's style of teaching is mainly from the book, meaning you need to read the chapters throughly before coming to class because thats what he expects. He goes over homework by individually calling out everyone on the roster, and will quiz you on the spot about how well you not only know the problem, but the subject.
Probably the best teacher I ever had. If you go to class and keep up with the homework it is a tough class but not an impossible one like some say. He always answered my questions and showed me how to think. I am taking him for 202 next semester because I like his teaching style where he lectures first before he assigns you homework. No complaint
He really scared me at first but he is a really nice professor. I got a B & Icould have gotten an A if I had more time to put into the class. He is a really good teacher & will explain everything in detail that you need to know for the exams. I plan on taking him for ACC 202 next semester since I am used to him & I hear that 202 is easier
Do not take unless you are an Accounting major. He makes 202 very difficult. On my final for 201 I got a 97% but I'll be lucky if I can pass the final in this class. Who said ACC202 was easier than ACC201 again?
Very bad teacher for accounting 202. This class was said by everyone I know to be easier than 201, but Smigla's class was the second hardest class I have ever taken (only beat by engineering calculus). I made an A, but I would never take this professor again. Only recommended if you do great under pressure.
I found ACC 202 to be more interesting and a bit easier than 201. I relied on his lectures since I never had enough time to read the text because of my courseload and work and I was able to get a B grade. Make certain you keep up with the homework and I really enjoyed his class. He does explain everything i detail and will answer your questions.
Go to class, participate and read the text book. If you take Dr. Smigla in the summer and you don't have time to study you're gonna be screwed, glued and tattooed. 2 tests, over 7 chapters each. It's like starting off on a tricycle and 3 weeks later you're trying to ride a Harley. Very smart, but if you're not an accounting major find someone diff.
this was my second time taking acc201 and it made me feel like i knew nothing. smigla is very smart and understands the info well and he expects everyone to be on the same page as him and isn't good at dumbing-down the info for new students. an introduction course should not seem like a foreign language, especially after taking other gatton classes
He is very more than AWESOME. I've heard he is a tough professor but the truth is if you follow him on everything especially on doing homework without cheating and going to classes, you will find out that he is not only teaching you how to get through this class but also give you the logic of accounting system. Easy-A-takers don't deserve him.
Not a good professor, he tells you the information and doesn't teach it. Talks to you like you should know it already. Doesn't provide a lot of material to prepare fore tests with, just the textbook, past homework, and his poorly done lectures. Only take him as a last resort and don't expect an A, expect to work extremely hard for a B.
Knows his stuff and expects students to take the class seriously. He is really nice and will help you if you ask questions. Learned a lot in his class and other students in 301 have told me he is the best teacher to prepare you for intermediate accounting and I agree since I find 301 this semester to be easy compared to other students.
This class was one of the worst things to ever happen to me, second only to my parents divorce. He is a terrible teacher. I earned A's in every other class this semester and barely passed Smigla. He should not be in a classroom. Take literally anyone else.
I found 202 to be much easier than 201 but it could be that he really explains things and actually teaches you. I wish I had taken him for 201 and he will answer any questions you have and help you.
I see that some students say Smigla is so difficult but I did not think so. Just go to class do the homework and study for the exams and you should do fine if you have half a brain. Smigla is also very helpful if you ask him questions. He is a an excellent teacher and might seem too serious, but is a nice guy.
Lots of people complain about Smigla, but it is definitely the people who don't put in an effort. You need to work for your grade no matter which professor you take, its how accounting is. Do the homework, show up to class, KNOW his powerpoints and there is no reason why you should not get at least a B
Do NOT take smigla if you aren't majoring in accounting. I am so i took it bc the comments said he helps you in later acc courses. I put in more effort than i do in any other classes, got an 85 on the first exam. I go to the tutoring center twice a week and they all say my class is ahead of all the other professors. Small class Calls on you for hw
The worst professor I have ever had. Accounting is a hard subject, but Smigla doesn't try to make it any easier. He stands in front of the class and lectures, then goes over homework. If you aren't an accounting major, do yourself a huge favor and just take someone else. If you can't take someone else, take it online over the summer
Expect many hours of homework each week. He does online homework as well as book homework that is went over in class that you answer for participation. I went in with no prior accounting experience and already felt lost within the first week. If you took a class in high school or you are retaking it would be much easier. Many students in my class
I was previously an engineering major and lost interest and decide on accounting. A lot of students say he is so difficult but I found his course to be no more difficult than in my prior major. He explains everything and teaches you how to think. I think he is one of the best professors I've had at UK and would take him again. Don't get behind.
Dr. Smigla is one of the best professors that I have taken at UK. That being said this class is tough and you definitely have to work hard. If you are not an Accounting major, DO NOT take this class, however, if you are planning on pursuing a degree in accounting, Smigla is the best option as he is the best for preparing you for intermediate ACC.
Smigla is one of the best professors I've ever had. Don't get confused, however, he is also one of the toughest. I studied probably about 30 hours per test. If you don't enjoy the subject of accounting he probably isn't the right guy. But if you want to learn the subject i would strongly recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! This is by far the worst class and professor. Test averages are regularly low 60's and he does not add a curve. There are no study guides/ practice exams. He is arrogant. Stands and lectures the whole class. Exams are TOUGH. Absolutely do not take this class if you do not have to.
I just completed his class and have to say I leaned more in his class than any other one. Don't get behind whatever you do and be prepared to do homework for a change compared to most other courses.
I took his online class this past summer and relied on his online lectures which are really interesting instead of reading the text which is boring. Make certain you work out the text homework before you do the online homework. I'm not an accounting major and found this class to be very interesting and could have earned an A had I worked harder.
I took his acc 202 class online and it was a good course. I relied on his lectures and never read the text since he has really good lectures. If I really applied my self I probably would have gotten an A, but I still learned a lot. Make certain you complete the text homework before you do the graded online homework.
John Smigla is a joke of a prof. For the hybrid accounting course he shows up one day to class, goes over homework answers and then class is over. Lectures are your responsibility. No exam prep, he mixes chapters up. Take acc 202 with a different professor. Smigla can hardly go two words without saying um or what, very professional for a "lecturer"
His online lectures were really great since the chapters are so difficult to understand. I wish I would have taken him the first time. He also provides homework lectures where he goes over the homework with detailed explanations before you complete graded online homework. You will need to keep up with the assignments and just don't get behind
I had him this past summer for ACC201 online and looked at what other students said. Students seem to really like or hate this professor but I'm glad I took him. His lectures are great and I did not have to even read the book but I did all the assigned homework and went over his homework lectures also before doing the graded MAL. I'd take him again
By far the worst accounting teacher at UK. Gives no notes or resources.
I took him for online class this semester due to covid and he would send out one power point ones a week that provided little help. I tried to reach out to him to ask for more help and his response was basically "try harder". I had to teach myself everything and basically went through ACC 201 without a professor. DO NOT TAKE SMIGLA
Really just all on your own with learning the information. Lectures are really long and there is no exam prep whatsoever. Pretty tough course but honestly it's manageable to get a B.
I took John Smigla for ACC 201 over the 2020 Winter Intersession, and I'm taking him again for ACC 202. Regarding both, there is a clear way to always do well in this class: study what he tells you to. He provides you with lecture content, a great textbook, really insightful homework, and while it is a lot, it's ultimately all you need to succeed.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Smigla does not know how to set up a canvas shell, all of his lectures are randomly thrown into a file folder. The canvas shell has no way of accessing the homework and lectures are prerecorded. If I knew professors could get paid for being so little help I would've become a professor too
I took Prof Smigs last semester for ACC 201 and I am now taking him for ACC 202. His 202 course is much easier than 201 and I will definitely earn an A grade compared to ACC 201 when I got a B grade. Just make sure you study his lectures and work the homework so you can do it on your own and you will do great since he covers everything you need
I'm not sure if this is a first time for Professor Smigla but the exams he presents is nothing like the lectures nor the homework. I understand that the exams are suppose to be hard, but my god. One hour and 30 minutes for a 38 question exam having 25 questions that requires at LEAST 5-15 minutes of constant BS is insane. Take at your own risk.
He doesn't hold any lectures or give review for exams. He just put up all the PowerPoints at the beginning of the semester and called it a day. He doesn't teach and the students basically have to learn by themselves. He only gives one chance for each homework question, which doesn't allow for practice.
I don't know what's worse. The final exam being over the entire 11 chapters of accounting or the fact that he doesn't teach the class at all and we have to learn it ourselves. Get ready to sweet your butt off because you'll have to buy chegg in order to get passing hw grades since it's a 1 time try. The exams are some of the toughest exams Ive done
Exams are vast majority of your grade, but you are only given previous HW to study from, no review. Unforgiving. Exams are nearly impossible, so many quantitative problems and such a short amount of time. I always ran out of time because each problem takes 4-5 min to complete. Doesnt teach or care. Only posts lecture slides and some HW help. Avoid
I have never had a professor that expected the entire class to teach themselves managerial accounting without lecture videos. This was by far the most time consuming class ive taken so far. The exams are terrible. He gives you 1 hour 30 mins to complete 35 problems that at least take you 5-10 mins to complete. The final is GOD AWFUL. Do not take!!!
He covers everything you need to know for exams and just follow his steps on how to approach the course. He always answered my questions and was very helpful. I really liked his lectures since I did not even read the boring text! If you get behind there is no catching up in accounting so don't make this mistake since some of my friends did.
I am glad I took Prof Smigla for 201 since I had a much easier time than my friends in intermediate accounting. He always answered my questions and his chapter and homework lectures helped me a lot. Just make sure you follow his instructions on how to approach the course. I would take him again.
I took his "Hybrid" course and will openly fail the final next week. This guy probably can teach, nice guy. But you won't do well seeing him only once a week. He posts lecture videos you have to read a chapter of the textbook, do textbook homework and do homework on top which is due every Friday.
He is one of the worst accounting professors i have had. He had every exam after a break which made my breaks disappear since i had to study. he is overall nice but didnt explain things well. be ready to cry
I took the hybrid course where class meets only once a week instead of twice. I liked the format since the lectures which were really good were online and I could listen to them on my own time and rewind. Class time was used for covering assigned homework so don't miss class. If I had worked harder I know I could have earned an A grade.
Prepare to teach yourself, only has one lecture a week and only goes over the homework. Teaches the chapter but if you don't already have an understanding of the chapter it's super easy to get behind.
Professor Smigla made ACC 202 extremely difficult. Tests are nearly impossible, homework is one try only. Lectures are very confusing. I failed every single test and did not pass the class. Avoid taking him at all costs.
I had his 201 online this summer over 8 weeks & I like it. He sends out emails & has modules on Canvas which tell you what needs to be done each week. Make sure you listen to the online lectures & keep up with the homework & listen to those video. The exams aren't easy but he doesn't ask anything that is not covered in the video lectures & homework
Ch 1,2,3 are critical for the rest of the course. I recommend not reading the textbook. Download the ch power-points on pearson, watch the lectures, and do the study probs. Go through all those at least 2x until its second nature. Make sure to utilize the office hours, especially after exams. Smigla does a great job at simplifying the material.
I had his hybrid 201class last semester and I am now taking him for 202 hybrid. His online lectures are really good and when you meet for class he covers the homework in detail and answers student questions. He covers everything you need to know for the exams so just keep up with the assignments and do exactly what he tells you.
He is very strict, and not forgiving at all. I reached our numerous times throughout the semester for extra help in ways and he was never willing to help someone who was going out of their way to reach out. His homework's are very difficult as you get one attempt for the HW and problems. Other prof provide multiple chances and better ways to study.
He seems to know a lot about accounting, but isn't a very good teacher. The exams make up most of the grades besides some homework. He curved our first exam a lot, which was generous, but other professors allow cheat sheets on exams. He wouldn't be my first choice, but not the worst either, seems like he would be better for a higher level course.
All of this professor's lectures were online and were incredibly bland. They were very hard to stay focused on. The online home works were fairly difficult and very unforgiving (1 attempt to complete). He also runs his class in McGraw Hill so grades are not accessible on Canvas. I would definitely recommend finding another professor for accounting.
You basically have to teach yourself managerial accounting which isn't that big of a task but the lectures are basic and you can tell he reads them straight out of the course material provided to him. The homework assignments are very nit-picky and expect to miss dumb points on those. The exams get curved a lot so that is nice of him.
ACC200) His lectures are extremely hard to get through. The key to get a good grade in his class is to rework the homework until it's muscle memory! Most of the exam questions are word for word from the study mode of his homework.I can't stress it enough. Overall it wasn't too bad but didn't exactly make me passionate about accounting.
His syllabus and announcements are the most absurd things to read because he insists on underlining and bolding just about EVERYTHING. He's trying to emphasize points to be made, yet it just ends up being all of it, so it is so easy to miss a point being made. Which then, of course, is your fault if you miss anything.
(ACC200) He is a good instructor in how he presents the info, but the lectures are pretty boring. I put them on 2x speed and it still is tough to listen to. In the class we do have he goes over the not-graded HW and then answers questions. Accounting is generally difficult, and he makes it a bit better. Listen to lectures, show up, and you'll pass.
I had him for ACC 200. He is very easy going and approachable. There was a quiz every week based on the lecture and assigned homework from the previous class. He makes the class very clear on how to succeed, you just have to do your part. Quizzes and exams are very straightforward from lecture and homework. I can't speak highly enough of him!
I took this class as a hybrid course meeting once a week to go over homework from online lectures. The lectures are tedious and not required to learn the material but they do help. There is usually one homework assignment per week with several questions that can take some time to complete. The exams are mainly over the information from lectures.
Lectures were actually the longest, most boring videos ever. His homeworks were online and he did go over the actual problems in videos every week, posted before homework was due so it was easy to get it done. He does wait to put in all of the homework grades until the end of the semester, so the grade throughout is only based off of the two exams.
Hard for nonbusiness majors. Im a senior with 4.0GPA getting my 1st B. Only has 4 things in gradebook= 3 exams, hw total. Way to succeed: read textbook, watch textbook videos, watch his lectures, practice hw, do hw, & take notes for every step. Be prepared to spend at least 5 hrs a week on this class. first week took me 9 hrs to do everything.
You earn your grade in this class. The exams are exactly like the HW: but I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who isn't ready to lock in+ he curves exams!
Accounting can be tough, but this professor makes it manageable. His lectures are dry, so watch at 2x speed. Use unstuck ai, the textbook, and attend office hours to succeed. Expect a challenging but fair class.
The lectures don't match the homework. The explanation on the homework videos do not help whatsoever. The homework you get one chance and can't redo it. Like i said, since the homework videos don't help, I've constantly gotten bad scores on the homework. Absolutely awful
One of the worst classes I've ever taken, plus it was online. Tests are 60% of your grade, homework isn't put in until the end of the semester (so your midterm grade is just one exam), and exams are nothing like the homework. He gives no study materials/ exam expectations, so good luck figuring out how to prepare for exams. Do anything but this.
The entire class is on Connect, the tests aren't anything like the homework even though it's the only thing you do in the class. When I emailed him about seeing the questions I missed on the homework or the tests he simply responded with contact customer support. He does not teach and his videos are not helpful, good luck!
Would not take this class. Took this class online & exams are worth so much of the grade & I felt like the lectures did not help. The homework is nothing like the exams. Felt like there was no guidance or help in this class to understand any of the material.
Was extremely rude and short when replying to emails. He was not personable at all and would tell you there is nothing he can do for you. He would instruct you to go to other people of authority for help instead of teaching his own class. Would never take a course for him again. The homeworks are hard and have 0 room for error.
Tests are hard after Exam 1. The lectures are hard to follow. Super monotone but on top of that I feel like he doesn't really explain the content well whatsoever. Literally feel like I'm fighting for my life in this course. If you're someone who really wants to get an A do not take this class. I don't believe any assignments are dropped either.
The lectures are extremely slow and boring to watch. You only get one attempt on the homework questions. It is also extremely hard to prepare for exams due to the lack of material provided for said exam. All he says is to rewatch the lectures and review the homework (no study guide or practice problems). Also exams are 75% of your grade.
DO NOT TAKE. He refuses to meet during his own syllabus-listed office hours, does not reply to emails, and is unapproachable in person. He consistently rounds grades down, and it genuinely feels like student success is not a priority. This course seems designed for students to struggle. Do not let the fact that it's online persuade you. Don't take.
Do not take with Smigla. Homework is rigged for failure regardless of how well you know the material. Exams are hard and class is set up to be impossible to receive an A. You will regret taking accounting with Smigla, I promise. He doesn't seem to care about his students at all and won't even show up to his own office hours.
