Great guy. Really wacky and interesting, and he shows a clear passion for the material. Class is easy, takes a set number of questions from each of the sections/chapters covered.
Professor Snodgrass is very passionate about the class. Extremely helpful and willing to help all of his students. Loved the class, take it!
He is quirky and probably the worst ranter I've experienced in 4 years. I found his lectures to be painful and hard to pay attention to. He cares a lot about the students. I would not consider this an "easy A" class if that's what you're looking for.
Dr. Snodgrass is probably one of the best professors at Michigan. He did an excellent job making sure every student had a good understanding of the material. He responds quickly to emails and is always available when you need help. The class can be tough since there is a lot of material but his test are fair and the workload is manageable.
The NICEST prof, genuinely wants to hear your thoughts and would LOVE to answer any questions. Took his perception class spring term and even though it was fast, he was very clear what was going to be on his exams. You need to study, but he clearly lays out (especially in lecture) exactly what terms you should know.
In addition to being clear and helpful, Snodgrass also an entertaining lecturer. He managed to make material on long-term memory interesting! He is very open to questions and seems to actively welcome them as forms of discussion, which definitely helped keep me engaged. Exams are fairly straightfoward and the amount of busy work is quite low.
Snodgrass was one of my favorite teachers! Super understanding and considerate. Lectures are recorded and exams are based on lecture
The lectures were kind of boring to be honest. The people who showed up hardly paid any attention at all. For the exams you basically only need to know the lecture slides. There were quizzes every week in discussion on the week before's lectures. Not too bad, but definitely not the amazing professor I expected from the other reviews.
Definitely do not take a class with this professor during an election year. Got way too invested, preached his views rather than teaching, and cancelled an exam twenty minutes before it was scheduled to begin. Overall, most found him to be unprofessional and conceited. Students didn't pay attention in class, but if you study slides you'll be fine.
Dr. S is a wonderful professor. He generously offers his time to students who need any outside help, and helps you figure out answers on your own rather than resorting to spoon-feeding. He also loves questions! I learned more than I have in most of my classes at UMich. Class always zoomed by because the topics were so interesting.
Focus on his lecture ppts
Such a cool dude and great professor. Really enjoyed class with him, and his tests were easy. He uploads lectures so you don't technically have to go, but I always went anyway because hearing him laugh in person is hilarious. Definitely recommend.
Only teacher at my four years here who I feel cares. He is fair. He is a good guy. He actually teaches you how to think about the material, rather than thinking about if you are getting tricked or not.
Dr. S is a great guy and has the quirkiest laugh I have ever heard. He genuinely cares about all of his students and wants everyone to do well. The exams are easy if you study (memorize his powerpoints). Also if you do poorly on the first exam he will drop it. The only negative thing I have to say is he doesn't put any grades into Canvas.
He's a very passionate professor. He records all of his lectures, and doesn't take attendance. The exam questions are taken straight from his powerpoints, so they are rather easy if you study them.
Super well-versed in his field and you can tell he cares a lot about his students' success. He is never trying to trick you and everything you need to know is on his lecture slides. Also super nice that lectures are recorded so you don't have to go. Highly recommend this course for an easy A!
Dr. Snodgrass is a great professor. He cares about his students and makes sure to convey that. He is concise in his lectures, explains things well, and frequently checks for class understanding. Class was mandatory except for 2 allowed absences but I didn't care because I genuinely enjoyed listening to him lecture.
I honestly don't understand why Dr.S gets such high ratings here. His lectures are quite boring besides his laughs at his own jokes. His slides and notes were the most wordy and disorganized I've ever seen, but you need to memorize the them (word-by-word) for the exams, which were quite easy as long as you understand all the awkward wordings.
Great lecturer. Always willing to answer questions at any point in lecture. Has a good sense of humor. The man!
The lectures are recorded- prof Snodgrass tends to talk slow, so I watch his lectures on 1.5 speed. Weekly quizzes in discussion.
Dr. S is sweet, clearly passionate, and funny. The class itself consists of boring material, but the exams were extremely fair. If you take notes during lecture and study the slides, you will be absolutely fine.
Dr. Snodgrass is a great professor who cares largely about his students success. He encourages questions throughout the lecture and is not burdened by them . If psychology is a field that you are good in, this is almost like a blowoff class. No textbook use, just go to the lectures or watch them online.
Dr Snodgrass made Psych 240 really enjoyable. He encourages class discussion and is very knowledgeable in his field. His exams are very fair and reasonable if you pay attention in class and study his slides.
I don't get why his rep is so great on here. I got an A but I had to work for it. The guy is extremely boring and tried to make the exams confusing in order to lower the grade distribution. Lectures are super dry and his mind is set on "LSA's advice to set the class average at a B+." He doesn't go the extra mile to make the class enjoyable for you.
I signed up for his lecture specifically because of all of these reviews but didn't feel that he was that great. Obviously the circumstances have changed the ways that professors lecture but he didn't make an effort to make this course enjoyable. His voice is extremely monotone and his lectures just weren't that engaging. I mainly relied on my GSI.
I was exited to take this class because of the ratings on here and the subject matter at hand. How foolish of me. Now, this was online, but that didnt help anything. Hes extremely monotone. Lectures are very boring. Exams are basically memorizing specific parts of his lecture slides. Weekly quizzes are unnecessary stress. Avoid if possible.
This was the worst class I have taken at UofM. I've taken other psych classes and loved them so was looking forward to this one. He does not clearly explain topics and does not have students' best interests in mind when it comes to exam structure. 50 questions in 40 minutes with no review or study support. Avoid this prof at all costs.
You have to memorize all the slides literally. He recorded his lectures, GSIs seemed disengaged. An awful experience overall. If youre not required to take this class, AVOID at all costs! Timed weekly quizzes cause more stress than they should. Exams are 50 questions in 40 minutes, and he makes them harder if the class does well. He doesnt care.
Man, I was really counting on these positive ratings. While he seems nice, the time limit is so unreasonably strict, and gets stricter because of perceived improvement on the tests. During times like this, the situation needs to be more flexible, not punitive. I don't think any of my professors do this except him right now and he needs to curve.
He literally doesn't care about the fact that we're in a pandemic and everyone could use all the help they could get. He's just so set in his ways, probably from eons of teaching, that he's not willing to adapt at all when it comes to students voicing their concerns. Total letdown, seriously disappointed.
Professor Snodgrass is horrible at explaining basic concepts, and you have to teach yourself the material from the textbook mostly, which is exhausting and inefficient. He also teaches topics not in the textbook in the most confusing way possible, and for this you don't even have the textbook to help you. Would never take again.
Professor Snodgrass is extremely test heavy and the lectures are boring. Even during a pandemic, students were doing well and he decided to make the final exam harder to lower the average grade. I dont think he thought of his students throughout the semester and how the pandemic could also be affecting them.
I took this class with him since he had good reviews before, but this semester he made things especially hard rather than being understanding during the pandemic. He stated that we as a class were doing too well & he wanted to bring down the class average, so he intentionally made the final much harder than the previous 2 exams to decrease grades.
This fella sucks. Literally the worst explainer on the face of this earth. He teaches like he's gatekeeping the concept. Avoid this man at all costs. Literally the worst professor I've had.
I have very conflicting feelings for Snodgrass. He makes snarky comments to students but I dont think he means to be rude. But at the same time, he seems very sweet. His lectures are very dense and he tends to go on tangents quite often. Very hard to concentrate his class. His tests are fairly easy if you study his slides in depth.
This professor has a really difficult time describing basic concepts. It feels as though he's gatekeeping a lot of the material. Also, he's very insecure about cheating to a ridiculous point. The questions he asks can be really annoying and he doesn't mend anything. Honestly, the worst professor I've ever had and his class took tolls on my health.
This class is one of the hardest classes I've taken. Have 6 question weekly quizzes that are only 4 minutes long. It is nearly impossible to get a 6/6 because you are presented with all the material 1 day before the quiz, which is on a whole chapter. The exams are 40 minutes long for 50 questions, some of the wording is confusing. DON'T TAKE!
I would say he makes this class harder than it needs to be. For our online exams, we had 40 minutes to do 50 questions. The sections with the other prof for this class had 90 minutes to do 50 questions. I found it very hard to get through his lectures because they are very dense & he talks EXTREMELY slowly. I had to watch them all on 2x speed. Skip
It's clear that Snodgrass does not want his students to do well. He gives you 50 questions in 40 min on an exam, while the other professor gives his students double the time. The same time crunch is present for weekly quizzes. It's difficult to even read his confusing questions in that time. Do not take this class with him.
Do not take this class with prof. Snodgrass. His lectures were painful to get through even in 2x speed. I love psychology and really regret taking this class. The tests were not "difficult" in their content but they were sometimes worded really weirdly and it was 50 questions in 40 minutes!! You had to go insanely fast. Also tests are worth 80%.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. professor snodgrass speaks in the most monotone, boring voice you have ever heard in your life. he reads directly from slides and when he isnt, the information that hes telling you is not relevant to the topic at all. gsis will get you through this class. tests are extremely difficult and he gives you barely any time
Doesn't communicate well what you should understand for exams, just says that it's the material from lecture A to lecture B. Exam questions can be worded weird. Wastes a lot of time in lectures, reads right off his slides, and just kinda rambles through the material. Recommend looking through the GSIs' study material, even if they're not your GSI.
There's so much information thrown at you for tests and quizzes that don't give you any time to think due to timer. Exams are 80% of the grade and not easy questions. Enroll in a discussion time you'll know you'll never miss. LOTS of studying needed for this class. Looking at the slides is better than listening to his rambling, monotone lectures.
Snodgrass was super boring. He was terrible at explaining material and made the class so much harder than it had to be. His lectures left me feeling more confused. Also, the class grade was made up of only exams. Would not take this class ever.
I was personally not a fan of professor Snodgrass's teaching style - I found his lectures disinteresting and tried to get through them as quickly as possible (I took this course asynchronously). He comes off as very inaccessible to students (heavily directing them to GSIs office hours instead of his own).
Attendance was only mandatory for discussions. The textbook and lecture material are extremely similar, so as long as you're paying attention and at least doing one, you should be pretty set! I found the exam material to be pretty appropriate and reflective of the material covered in class, so overall I would say he's a pretty fair professor.
I do not recommend taking this professor at all. He makes everything 10x more harder than it needs to be and his lectures are very dull, boring, and make no sense. I would recommend just reading straight from the textbook rather than attending his lectures if you really want to understand what is going on in the class.
Snodgrass as a lecturer is atrocious. 90% of your grade is based on 3, 50 question multiple choice exams. The questions are horribly written and very often give only two options, with c & d being both or neither, meaning you must know what obscure thing he's asking. Got A's in way harder classes, this is the worst. Avoid him! take 240 w anyone else
He's a super great and intelligent person! However, lectures are boring/slow. My advice is to generally skip lectures and watch them later in 2x speed. Not homework-heavy at all, but there are three exams that make up most of your grade.
The worst professor I've had. His powerpoints do a poor job explaining, and his lectures are hour and a half monologues (more like a monotone ramble). Because his slides are bad you're forced to listen to this incoherence. His laugh is incredibly obnoxious. Many exam questions are confusing. The course itself is fine, but avoid him at all costs.
Snodgrass tends to ramble in his lectures but I found him to be fairly entertaining and it is clear that he is very knowledgable in his subject. I read the textbook and used his lectures as a supplement to the textbook and it was very helpful and made the class much easier. Exams were 50 multiple choice questions and straightforward.
If you watch the lectures online at 1.5x speed the class is good! Very interesting takes from a guy in the field. Loved the consciousness stuff. You'll enjoy if you like reflecting and metacognitive thinking!
Snodgrass was genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. He was boring and could not speak a sentence without having at least five "ums" in between words. As someone who can typically work with anyone, I could not work with him. He is an obvious example of a researcher who is forced to teach and does not care about the success of students.
He was awful. Painfully boring and convoluted lectures, and very similar discussions. The slides are not laid out well, the content covered on the test is unclear, and the tests themselves are HORRIBLY written. As someone who was very excited for this class, he completely ruined it for me. Trust me and the ratings and choose a different professor
I was excited to learn in this class when it started, but I found Professor Snodgrass' lectures very boring and tough to follow. He spent a lot of time giving his own opinions which were not always relevant. The exam questions can also be worded in ways that are extremely confusing, and most of your grade is based on exams.
Snodgrass could be a bit boring at some points during lecture, however he also makes a few jokes and you can tell he's interested in the lecture content. Watching lectures at home on 1.5x speed made them much more enjoyable/easier to take notes. Exams are easy if you watch the lectures/take notes and go to the discussion sections.
I truly feel like he was a great lecturer and that these reviews do not accurately represent his great preparedness and clarity regarding the material. I loved his class.
I would 100% recommend this course! Dr. Snodgrass was a personable, likable teacher who teaches with clarity and respect to his students. The exams were written superrrr fairly and wording was far from tricky. The cog labs were a great supplement to my understanding. He was witty, funny, and made the content enjoyable and as thorough as possible.
Despite what many of the reviews say, I personally liked Dr. Snodgrass. I found the lectures to be pretty clear. Also, I would highly recommend actually doing the assigned readings in the textbook. When I did those I went to lecture already being familiar with the material which helped a ton. My biggest advice would be take detailed notes!!
Avoid this professor. The exams are most of your grade and worded ABYSMALLY. Additionally, the lectures are unbelievably dry and filled with his own subjective opinions which will almost certainly steer you astray when taking quizzes or tests, and the online CogLab experiments do little to teach you about the relevant course concepts.
Snodgrass was a decent professor! His lectures were generally easy to follow but dry at times. The class was exam heavy, but the exams themselves were not bad, other than being worded a bit unclearly at times. The cog labs weren't helpful for course content, but helped pad the gradebook! Snodgrass was generally accomodating and willing to help out.
Very monotonous lectures and confusing notes that are hard to study off of. Gives good study guides that prepare you well for exams.
He is a very intelligent researcher and has compelling theories of consciousness and cognitive psychology. However, adding these "special topics" takes away from the essential content that is required for several majors. He takes a very traditional approach to lectures and grading with dry powerpoints and exam heaviness (80% of the grade.)
Everyone hates on him for no reason but tbh he is awesome. Even though the class is large he always tries to answer everyones questions and is available after class to answer questions as well. He is actually passionate which makes it engaging and he chuckles at his own jokes which makes the students laugh as well (his laugh is silly and lovable).
The lectures were taught almost identical to what's in the textbook. There are 3 exams worth 80% of your grade, which makes all other assignments worth virtually nothing. Overall a good class, but lectures could be dull sometimes.
Avoid this professor if you can help it. I've had him twice now and his classes are equally unbearable. He talks to students in the most demeaning way possible and throws a fit whenever someone challenges him on something, words questions on exams horribly, and can't get through a lecture without going on a 30 minute side-tangent.
Painstaking, boring lectures that are supplements with labs that have no real help to the students in terms of learning the material. Terrible exam writer and will literally never curve exams.
Prof. Snodgrass has slowly killed my love for psychology throughout the course of this class. He explains the simplest concepts in convoluted, confusing ways, and then looks at you like you're stupid when you don't understand what he's saying. The course is almost entirely graded by exams (which are equally convoluted in their wording).
Professor Snodgrass has caused me to reconsider pursuing a career in psychology. The course was not only laden with numerous tests but also proved challenging due to his lengthy and unengaging lectures, coupled with his lack of relatability.
Avoid enrolling in any class with Professor Snodgrass! You will regret this decision. His age hinders his ability to connect with students, and he displays a lack of concern for our success. My best friend and I took this class together and both regretted it! Exams are hard and most of your grade counts on them.
Prof Snodgrass seems nice, but I would not recommend him as a professor. His lectures are nearly impossible to follow as he frequently goes off on tangents, but his exams are straightforward so as long as you know the slides well, you should succeed. He is insensitive to students struggling with the material which comes across as condescending.
I had a lot of problems with this professor because he is super rude and the material is hard. I strongly recommend taking any professor but this guy. Also, he is unethical and too old I think to be working with our generation.
Worst doc in the psych dept. If you have a family emergency, it will result in a failing grade. Dude is the epitome of why tenure is bad. Aside from personal grievances, the exams are worded weird and confusing, I am assuming on purpose. What a bummer!
Dr. Snodgrass' lecture and class were unnecessarily challenging in terms of exam questions and lack of ability to teach the material without spiraling on tangents during lectures which possessed no relevance to the material. HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking a different professor!
Snodgrass was a fine prof for 447. Clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about consciousness, but the class isn't graded on very much (3 papers are 90% of the grade) and isn't super clear about his grading criteria in advance. I'm interested in the subject and he's super great if you're interested, but definitely don't take 447 as a blowoff.
Very lecture heavy. The only grades are three tests and one short paper, so be ready to study. The tests are long but not too hard. He tends to talk a lot through the lectures and it's sometimes hard to follow him. Overall, this course isn't too hard, but you have to be strict about studying.
Don't do it. This semester was incredibly stressful due to this challenging class, and communicating with him was difficult. Instead of offering support or advice when I expressed my struggles, Snodgrass merely suggested I take a late withdrawal.
As a senior psych major, this was the worst class I took at Umich, largely due to Snodgrass. The lectures were disjointed and often irrelevant to the exams, which were deliberately written to be strangely challenging. When I expressed concern about my grade and requested time to review my exam answers, he advised me to drop the class. WEIRD, right?
Even the faculty in the psych department hate this dude. My advisor told me I am one of many who have formerly complained. Avoid!
DO NOT DO IT! He's the worst! But more importantly, his exams are the worst. Take it online during the summer. I should have listened to my friends who warned me about him.
Dr. Snodgrass is my least favorite of all of the psych professors. The whole cohort seemed to genuinely *hate* this class because Snodgrass A.) cannot relate or connect to his students in any way, and B.) goes out of his way to make things challenging. Figure out an alternative if you can.
Doesn't know how to explain material at all. At first I went to lectures but his inability to explain things makes lectures near useless. Special topics he does are confusing too.
His lectures were unbelievably boring, he rambles a lot and he spends half the class making a simple concept more complicated. I actually like psych but I hated his class. His slides also dont make sense at all.
Snodgrass is not as bad as people say, but the class is graded mostly by three exams which makes your final grade pretty much solely determined by your exam performance. Very interesting class for people who enjoy psychology. I would just recommend that you don't take it if you don't perform well on weirdly worded multiple choice exams.
Psych 240 with Professor Snodgrass had a light homework load and test-focused grading, making it manageable. While lectures were poorly structured and overly detailed, my GSI's clear explanations helped. Understanding the material required effort, but I enjoyed learning about psychology overall.
Take this class with any other professor. Snodgrass constantly rambled and got off topic. He was a control freak. When students packed up early, he would get angry and keep talking about irrelevant things until the last second. He also made snide comments about students. The exams were poorly worded and took forever to be graded.
Unclear about final exam time, people showed up late and he berated them while others were testing. Very distracting, and unfortunate for these students. Boring, self-centered lecturer. Often inserts his own personal opinions into the PowerPoint info. The class was a snoozefest, he made no effort to make it engaging. Goes on tangents frequently.
Of all the professors I've encountered at Michigan, Snodgrass' methods stand out as the most counterproductive. It often felt like he was undermining our understanding of the subject, leaving our class more confused and frustrated than enlightened. He also scowls and smells like his clothes have not been laundered. Just plain gross in general.
This class is designed to be a headache. The exams are stressful. You can take this class online during the summer. Believe me - he is the worst professor at Umich.
Professor Snodgrass was unapologetically rude on many occasions to students asking fair questions.
This is my only review for a professor - Snodgrass is simply that bad. I sensed condescention from the first day, and agree with a previous review that his exams seems to be deliberately confusing. I do not view Snodgrass as a professor who is aiming to see his students reach their potential.
A series of boring and disconnected lectures followed by confusing exams. His lectures were hard to sit through. When I stayed after class to discuss my grade, he was dismissive and rude. Ultimately, a waste of time class.
Honestly went in to this course really frightened because of Dr.Snodgrass's reputation however I will confidently say he is a good professor and has genuine interest in what he teaches. Exams are worth 80% of your grade. The textbook's useful, I barely passed my first exam but changed how I studied and got over 90 percent of the 2nd and 3rdd one.
I've never rated a professor before, but I think he gets a bad reputation unfairly. The class is test-heavy, but attendance isn't mandatory. I watched lectures at 2x speed before exams and took notes, which was more than enough to succeed. He genuinely tries to help students as much as he can, and he made the content more engaging than I expected.
I get tingles of anticipation everytime I get to see john snodgrass. he makes me feel ways i've never felt before. he could examine my brain anytime
I love Professor Snodgrass... NOT! This was the hardest class I've ever taken and it doesn't even come close. I wanted to eat my shoe every time I came into these lectures. I'm so serious when I say that this class changed my life for the worst. I see him when I close my eyes to go to sleep and I know he is laughing at me.
I was pretty surprised with just how bad Snodgrass is. Without question the worst professor I have had so far.
Worst professor I have had thus far. AVOID THIS MAN!
Boring and long lectures and you can tell he HATES questions
I did not like this class. It was so boring, If you want to take Psych240 do not do it with Professor Snodgrass. The tests however are not that bad, I would have done better if I paid more attention in class, but it was so boring I could not stand being there. He also loves to go on rants that do not matter in terms of the course.
Making sure all professors (and students) realize that Rate My Professors allows false ratings from unregistered non-members, both good and bad, to be posted on this site.
The lectures consistently go off on tangents that are not helpful and are long-winded. There are not resources for extra credit, which is understandable, but unfortunately, if you want specific attention for help regarding exams, there are no resources for that, either. Big disappointment.
Save yourself the aggravation and take this class with ANY other professor.
The exams, which are essentially all that matters in this class, are cryptic as compared to questions which would simply teach the material. Both of my parents are PhD psychologists who did research. Also, taught by a boring guy. It's a "no" from me.
Honestly I think people give him way too bad of a rep. Almost no one attends in person lecture, but when you do frequently attend in person you learn that he is actually nice and he explains the concepts well - he just also goes off on side tangents. I think that everyone that is complaining does not go to class
Snodgrass is not worth all the trouble. First, the class is boring. The material is not engaging and he is not built to engage with college students of this generation. Second, the exams are a bit confusing. People fail them even after studying. Psych is supposed to be interesting, and this class is not built that way.
I think people on here are giving him a too bad of a rep. Does go through material relatively fast, but if u actually pay attention to what he is saying and don't only write the provided notes down the information makes sense. Seems passionate about teaching, and is somewhat blunt but a nice guy. Also very open to answering clarifying questions.
I really enjoyed having Snodgrass as my professor! He wants to make sure you understand the content, but you do need to show up in order to understand. I think that's where a lot of people fail. He explains the content clearly and I learned a lot!
This is a very specific type of psychology class that only people who are genuinely interested in the study of consciousness and research methods related to cognitive psychology will enjoy, which is why people who don't attend or want to blow it off give it a bad rap. Snodgrass is a distinguished expert in the field, and genuinely a nice guy.
Avoid this professor. Take this class online during the summer.
