Professor John Soden is the Best Professor I have ever taken, he teaches so well and is very attentive to questions any student might have. Attendance is not mandatory but participation matters. Two exams, Two Papers, and some discussions and you have your easy A! Take him and come back here to thank me.
I took an ethics class, so I knew there was gonna be a lot of writing and reading. There is a LOT of writing and reading. Professor Soden does a good job at giving feedback and gives us a way to track our progress. If you read the assigned reading then you're golden.
Good professor, just two exams, discussions that fine-tune one's reasoning skill. He comes online on mondays to get feed back on the students' performances and gives a positive mindset about learning.
I took Prof. Soden for the summer second five weeks He is an amazing prof. He cares about the success of his students and wants everyone to learn something, not just take the class and pass. He also participates in class discussions. No quizzes, its all essays and discussions. Do your assignments and and you will pass. he is an easy grader.
I love this man so much. He's so wonderful he's the best you will ever have. just take him and you won't regret it.
Professor Soden is so kind and funny! This class was very easy, just as long as you finish your assignments on time you can pass! This was a online on a schedule so it was very easy for me to understand course material. I recommend him 100% if you want a stress-free semester!
Amazing professor, Grades fair and he is super nice. Guarantee you will pass only if you take this class seriously.
This professor right here is a national treasure. His lectures are always inclusive but he won't ever force you to talk. He always respected each person's thoughts and responses on the topics. If you just spend at least 30 minutes each week reading the material, you'll be fine. Easy A and will reply to emails. For every essay, you pick your topic!
Dr. Soden is an amazing lecturer and professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his course because he was passionate and caring about his students and the material.
He made philosophy understandable. I loved the class so much that I was sad to see my classmates on zoom for the last time on the last day. Great professor!
Professor was okay only gives letter grades (A94). Comprehension of material is difficult and assignments rely on it. No quizzes just bi-weekly assignments followed by 2 papers, midterm and final. The assignments are easy consisting of answering questions from the textbook with 6-8 sentences. The papers are 4-6 pages, while the exams are 2 essays.
If you are looking for a good professor that will help you learn something then this professor for you. As long you do the work and turn it on time you are good. You have to read, maybe a few discussion questions, 2 research papers, a mid-term paper, and final paper. Don't get nervous he will give you a lot of time to finish it. You better get him!
I took him at Lone Star this spring, and he basically just gave us LONG study guides, that would take you more than an hour to do. We basically have to interpret the entire textbook on our own, and the amount of writing with had for this class was just absurd. I took this for a prerequisite, but the amount of writing makes it feel like a core class
I took Introduction to Philosophy online and I can say that Dr. Soden is a great instructor. You will read a lot, but it is a philosophy course so that should be expected. He divides all assignments/mandatory readings by weeks giving you a clear understanding of what is due & when. He is very helpful and understanding as long as you communicate.
He is thoughtful and his homework is very simple and to the point. He even let us choose how much time we needed to finish one of the first essays we did. He does enjoy participation in class and likes to hear your opinion on philosophical works. He won't however pressure anyone to participate. He is awesome! I learned a lot.
Professor Soden is a man who cares. It is evident that he truly loves philosophy and wants you to love it, too. Even though I wasn't as enthusiastic, I've had worse classes. Overall, he is clear in what he wants and grades pretty fairly. However, he makes you HANDWRITE your essays. Like, for real?! Yeah. It's weird. And annoying. But doable.
Professor grades chill and is not hard at all, you can do the bare minimum and still end with an A, although there are so many papers to write. He makes you write a lot and for the midterm and finals, he makes you handwrite it. There is a lot of writing, but he does not grade hard at all.
Professor John Soden seems like a typical Man His teaching skills are like no other, you can tell through his lectures he knows what he is taking about and can speak about it in a charismatic funny and inspirational way. This is my second time taking Philosophy and I am suprised at how professional/laid back and cool the professor is.
Professor Soden is one of the best professor's out there! I enjoyed his ethics class very much despite being a STEM major. He really enjoys teaching the topic of the day and always asks for the class input. Although there are many essays to complete the topics can be very interesting. You won't regret taking him!
Professor Soden was an amazing professor. He really looked out for the best interests of the class. You do a lot of reading in class, and have to write 2 essays. The book can either be bought or it is online.
Reasonable grader. The readings were difficult to get through (very dense) and you can always sparknotes it but it was interesting. Dr. Soden responds quickly and the assignments weren't too difficult if you understood the readings. They writing assignments are time-consuming so plan accordingly to get those done on time.
There was lots of writing because every class day, we had handwritten journals to do, and the tests were handwritten. His lectures made the readings easier, so I only had to skim and read the sections he didn't discuss. The downside was that his grades were only letters, so it was hard to predict which letter the final grade would fall on.
professor soden is an amazing professor I took him during the summer and it was a fairly easy class for it being five weeks he is very understanding and clear with his lectures and gives clear feedback if you pay attention and participate it is an easy A
One of the best professors I've ever had. Very cool, level-headed, down to earth, fair professor. Gives great feedback and very approachable. Do the work with effort and you'll receive the proper grade.
Take Dr. Soden!! Lots of reading because its Ethics but definitely interesting. Participate and put effort into your journals and papers, you will be sure to pass! 100% Recommend
Dr. Soden made us enjoy the Intro to Ethics class. Achieving As in all assignments was easy just by attending, reading participating when you feel like and submitting the easy assignments on time, as simple as this. You get you A grade while enjoying the course. No need to work very hard.
He was absolutely amazing, caring, and helped with any questions
He has everything that you are needing and then more when it comes to philosophy. Philosophy is a passion he enjoys teaching others- it shows! He's always there to help us to becoming "mini philosophers". I was terrified going in, but it was worth the late nights. Please read material before lecture- so you won't feel somewhat lost.
Great teacher! Never thought I was going to enjoy a philosophy class as much as I enjoyed this one. Class never gets boring because Profesor Soden makes it so interactive and entertaining. Definitely worth taking his class.
I took this class only as a requirement for my major, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite classes. The assignments are mostly written but have very straightforward instructions and requirements. I 100% recommend taking this professor.
Very kind and is very engaged with his & his students work.
Love this class and the Professor. over all I would take his class. Follow the syllabus and you will be ok.
Best Professor to Take.
This teacher has a great personality, very calm, cool and supportive. You can talk easily to him
Overall a great professor I enjoyed his class. Not alot of homeworks and made ethics very fun.
His way of teaching ethics made the class very fun. I recommend if you want to take an easy class and is fun at the same time.
I enjoyed his class so much! Keeps the classes interesting and is a really kind and inspirational teacher. Writings are completed in class, but they are intriguing and easy once you get the hang of things. It was a pleasure taking his class!
Great professor to have. You get extra points for reading out loud in class. This class improves your writing skills. Would for sure take another class with this professor again.
This professor is extremely nice nothing against him but the amount of work you have to do is mind blowing. Be ready to read and write A LOT like A LOT. Just make sure you submit his assignments on time and you will be fine. I wish he would open all assignments for the semester up so people can work at their own pace.
Hes the best! He is there to help you and is very understanding. There isnt many papers to write but there are journals you need to do. However, its not hard. Its all based on what you understood and he isnt a tough grader.
Dr. Soden is an amazing professor he is so understanding. You just have to do all your assignments and communicate with him if you have questions or turn in late work. Overall I loved this course and learned so much.
He was by far one of my favorite professors ever ! Class is interesting and fun . Class participation is recommended if you want credit for the day. i would take his class every semester if i could ! 10/10 need more people like him as long as you try theres no way you can fail. A lot of writing considering it is ethics but nothing hard at all!
The professor is a really great teacher. He always makes sure to take each concept that is needed for this class and tries to explain them or even summarize them for easy understanding. Also, the assignments are really interesting.
I took Dr. Soden for PHIL 1301 in the summer. His lectures are very engaging and interactive making it easy to learn and understand philosophy and most importantly MAKE GOOD GRADES! He's a great professor and super understanding. Definitely recommend! Participate in class and success is guaranteed!
Amazing Professor! Takes all the time you need to help you understand. Encourages you to think. Breaks down all of the material very clearly. Understands that we are people and have lives outside of class. I can't imagine getting a low grade in this course if you use your time wisely. Any other PHIL class will have to be taught by Dr Soden for me.
Loved this class! Best as a summer class can get. Easy material and support. Required textbook but, really affordable options for under 10.
John Soden is your best teacher that HCC have ever.
John Soden is the best professor that hcc has ever
He is a grate professor. Be ready to write and read. Overall perfect prof
There was a decent amount of writing for some assignments but we were given more than enough time to complete everything. As long as you're putting effort into your work you'll likely get an A !
the professor is good I recommend taking this class during the summer as well cause it's not that much, but it keeps your mind active. There is quite a bit of reading but it's nothing hard to find. he's a good teacher and also a generous grader but don't forget to put effort in your work he appreciates it and actually gives good feedback
great professor very caring no complaints you would not go wrong with Mr. John Soden
Dr. Sodden is amazing. I had his class during my deployment, he supported me and allowed me to turn in my paper whenever I'm available. For real that released a lot of stress on me. I really appreciated it
Professor Soden was so kind and understanding! I would definitely take him again if i had the chance
Dr. Soden was great and I am glad I researched his rating before taking the class. He was always available and got back to us quickly. He is a fair grader and gives great feedback. I feel like I learned something from the class without too heavy a work load - a nice balance. Would take a class with him again!
He's a great professor. I took his class during the summer semester of 2024, which was relatively easy. Be prepared to write and read a lot. There are study guides with focus questions, philosophical essays for which you'll need to write a proposal first, and discussions. He is very understanding, communicates well, and gives helpful feedback.
Professor Soden was extremely helpful during the course and answered emails in a timely manner. I enjoyed the course but I will say I didn't enjoy handwriting essays and journal entries because they were tedious to complete. Other than that It was a great summer course and very easy to get a good grade as long as you complete your work.
He is an effective educator who is aware of the challenges students face and provides them with the support they need to achieve academic success.
He is such a good professor, I took him for summer and the work may be a bit hard, but if you put in effort, you'll pass with an A, for one of the essay, I did something wrong and he told me I can still fix it, honestly a great teacher.
Dr. Soden is a great professor and is very knowledgeable about Philosophy!! I'm glad I didn't drop this course after looking at the reading and having trouble with understand what I was reading. Reading is not my strength but I've learned a great deal. Professor Soden is very supportive and always provides helpful feedback on assignments.
Dr. Soden is a great philosophy professor who genuinely cares about his students. The class has required college-level writing, but he gives thoughtful feedback that helps you improve. He was very understanding when I faced serious family emergencies. He's kind, considerate, and wants to see his students succeed. You will learn a lot.
Awesome professor. I've taking him twice
Professor John is an incredibly knowledgeable and kind-hearted instructor. his approachable and supportive nature creates a welcoming environment where students feel inspired to excel and confident to grow. his passion for teaching and dedication to his students make him truly exceptional.
He is a great professor!
Dr. Soden is an excellent professor! I took his class during the winter session. There was a lot of writing, but it was absolutely worth it. He's a fair grader and very responsive. I initially had low expectations, thinking the class would be boring. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and ended up learning so much in such a short time!
Overall he was a good professor, I took him for mini session class, the class was fast-paced we had 2 research papers, and a discussion due every week. what I didn't like about this class was that the study guides and journals were to be written by hand.
Dr. Soden is an amazing professor. A knowledgeable and compassionate teacher. He gives good feedback and tells you what needs to be done to improve your writing. The workload for the course is heavy and has limited time to turn it in as it's a mini semester but trust me, he is a fair grader. Take him if you are a good writer and willing to learn.
Dr. Soden is really understanding and incredibly passionate about what he teaches, so I would suggest him. As expected for a philosophy class, there was a lot of writing. However, he is not a strict grader. He seems to genuinely care only that you're finishing the assignments and embracing the material.
I took professor Soden during the winter session and let me tell you all that work load was worth it. Because there were so many assignments for a limited time, I felt that he was very understanding. I once forgot to turn in an assignment and he accepted the late work. Please take him if you want an A. I liked that he always responded fast.
Dr. Soden is one of the best professors I've had at HCC. Trust me and take his class!!! You will be stress-free. Not that much homework was given so I've never felt overwhelmed in this class. I'd recommend him to any future student looking to take philosophy 1301!
HE IS PERFECT! Grading is excellent, lectures are short and straightforward, instructions are clear, and the exams are less burdensome. Honestly, taking him as my professor was the best-est decision of my entire degree.
This professor is great—very professional, approachable, and organized. Their teaching style is clear and easy to follow. The lectures are straightforward, and If you stay on top of the reading logs and complete the assignments, you'll do well in the course. The professor does a great job of connecting the readings to class discussions
Amazing & Great Professor, detailed, very responsive, always makes time for his students. Be prepared to write. Would take him again if I could. He assigns work that is relevant. If you have questions, please don't be afraid to reach out to him, wealth of knowledge. (he doesn't mind sharing his knowledge either which is awesome)
I had a great experience in this course. The lectures were well-Organized and engaging, I appreciated how he encouraged thoughtful discussion. Overall, I would highly recommend Professor John Soden to anyone looking for a supportive and effective instructor.
The class is pretty easy! It's just a lot of textbook work. The main assignments in this course are reading the textbook and answering questions about it (handwritten). Expect a lot of writing, but assignments aren't too much to handle. Professor also gives good feedback.
Great professor. The teaching style is easy to understand. I took the class online. There were videos explaining the readings and assignments. It is easy to follow. You can contact the professor very easily. The main assignments in this course are readings and answering questions about those readings. I would take another course with him.
Super easy! Just do the work and the class will be a breeze, super easy 5 weeks.
I like the fact that homework assignments and exams are handwritten. And entirely sourced from the textbook. Lots of reading, but not hard to get through if you manage your time. I took a summer class: 2papers, 2exams, and Study guides as homework. Light work, no reaction^^
This professor is the nicest. His assignments are study guides and they're handwritten. Essays are kept simple and to the point. He gives great feedback. He replies to emails in a good amount of time. Definitely take this class. I took the 5 week summer course and it was not difficult at all.
For an online course, this class was made awesome by the professor. He had videos for each assignment where he gave clear instructions on the assignment, material, how to navigate and approach the needed material, and what the expectations were. Awesome professor, I wish I could take more if his classes. I definitely recommend this professor.
very cool 10/10 do the bare minimum and youll be fine
Dr. Soden is the BEST!!!! No joke, I would take him for every class if I could. Very patient (even with my sometimes stupid questions) and just a great, great professor all the way around. I can't recommend him enough! Do yourself a favor and take his class!!
Professor Soden is such a great professor! I really loved this course. All assignments are hand-written, which can get a little tiring, but the material is not difficult and there is generally only one assignment per week, so it is not too difficult to manage, especially if you are only taking a few other courses. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend!
Dr. Soden is a great professor! He responds quickly and is very reasonable and flexible. The class is not hard, but most assignments are handwritten (except for two papers). As long as you keep communication open with him, you will be fine. I would definitely take him again!
Professor Soden is awesome. Even though his assignments made us do a lot of hand writing in paper but it is 100% worth it. Finish your assignments on time... BASICALLY just finish your assignments you can NEVER fail his class.
He's very good at communicating, the work is fairly easy just allot of reading.
Be ready to handwrite all of the assignments other than that easy course
Professor Soden made this class extremely easy for me. He genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. None of the work was very difficult, and he makes sure to give you plenty of feedback on things that you could improve.
I took this class to learn about different faiths, and he made that meaningful. His lectures connected to the readings and clearly explained each assignment. The handwritten work was manageable because his instructions and research links were easy to follow. Overall, he taught the material clearly and professionally.
We need more professors like Dr. Soden
Dr. John Soden is a awesome professor!! His class is really easy but there alot of handwriting assignment. But it okay because it really easy and if you follow the instructions you will get a good grade. Turn in your work in on time that the only way to pass his class. Because there no way you can fail this class!!! but finish everything on TIME!!!
Professor Soden is great. Now there was assignments where you have to hand write but I feel it helped me understand the material better. I recommend to take his course he grades you fairly and is fair with his students. With all said this was the best online course I've taken.
Although you need to do your works to get a grade, but the professor is very understanding and fair. I really recommend this professor he actually cares about students.
Awesome instructor.
He isnt a bad teacher there is just a lot of reading in this course, and he is very easy to reach out too!
16wks, 6 reading/handwritten guide assignments every 2 wks, 2 typed papers, 2 midterm handwritten papers. It isn't too much work because the pacing was good, but it is a lot of reading. It's interesting info, but difficult to understand at times. Very easy to write about though. It'll take you longer to read than to write the guides. Great prof!
Very easy class, very great professor, no lockdown, lots and lots of writing
He is a good professor. Not a lot of work to do but reading the chapters are sometimes long but a easy class would take again.
Readings can be heavy but if you stay on track you will be okay a 100%. Pays attention to your work and gives very genuine feedback which is very much appreciated.
Amazing! Would definitely take him again. If you are ready to take any Philosophy courses, and his class is available, choose him! You won't regret it.
great professor, you just have to handwrite assignments but otherwise this class and professor were both very easy.
I love this profesor, so nice and gives good feedback, also gives you time to complete your work. Great profesor would take again and also there's a lot of reading.
Gives good feedbacks, always responds on good time but he gives way too much work.
Take him. he's a great person and super helpful
