This professor is big on participation and attendance. He is pretty chill other than that. He doesn't require a textbook and there aren't many exams or papers. He makes the lectures pretty entertaining while staying on topic. He is always willing to help you and advises on your papers if you don't understand something.

Philosophy is an interesting topic already, and this professor allows you to explore different aspects of it without pushing his own interpretations. The reads are interesting and make sure to go to class as it makes completing the essays easy.

It was very interesting with all the readings in the classes despite not understanding much but nonetheless, it was very enjoyable.

AMAZING professor! Grade is made of short journal entries, midterm, final, research paper, signature assignment, and mini group presentation. Used the journals as a way to take attendance. Midterm/final were handwritten essays. The "textbook" was provided + extra credit. He is very caring and encourages students to ask questions. 10/10 recommend!!

Great professor and very easy class, philosophical texts are read every day almost with a journal at the end of class, participating in reading the texts is a grade so make sure to do that as it is an easy 100. Sig Assignment with 2 written exams over philosophies read in class and is not hard as long as you grasp the basics but he ensures you do.

Professor soden was absolutely amazing. He is a caring teacher who will communicate and sympathize with you. He is not a tough grader. He encourages you to participate but will not force you. His reading and way of teaching is very good an intriguing. 100% would take him again!!

He is a very easy grader. As long as you put in effort and defend your argument well you will get a good grade.

You will be going over the readings in class and he does an amazing job explaining the main point of it. Most of the readings are long but the way he explains it makes it shorter. He also is very understanding if you miss class or are late. Just let him know in advance.

Professor Soden is an amazing instructor, his class is very manageable, you must read the topics for understanding, he gives you the information that is needed via video clip. He's always available via email and responds quickly. If I needed to take another class from him I certainly would in a heartbeat. Just do the work and you will pass.

2 signature papers, 2 exam papers, 6 guided journals, and no quizzes. Easiest class this semester. Amazing professor with a traditional teaching style. Communicated well/responds quickly. One thing to note: he prefers handwritten assignments. The class was straightforward, and the assignments weren't difficult. I would definitely take him again.

Professor Soden is without a doubt one of the most enthusiastic Professors out there. Even at 8am, we were encouraged to particpate and interact in class discussions. Though attendance was mandatory, if you missed class you were always able to email or turn in the work that was missed, rather than getting a 0. With all that, definitely I recommend!

Very easy class. Taken online so we had to submit most of our assignments handwritten. Some people may say it was too much writing but I think that's cause everyone would wait until last minute. Book required for the readings, some were interesting and his assignments were straightforward.

He is a good professor but, the essay and handout have to be all handwritten. He wants all the work handwritten and the exam are written essay instead of multiple choice. Overall he is a good professor that cares and gives good feedback on assignments.

Professor Soden seems to be understanding, I had some issues at the beginning of the course and I just emailed him and he was helpful. He had us do handwritten reading/study guides which although they definitely take time to complete, I found extremely helpful. He also accepts late work, but there is a penalty.

Online summer I course. I think I would enjoy taking him in-person for his lectures. I didn't love the handwritten essay assignments, but he is very clear on his expectations. If you follow the syllabus & complete your assignments timely, you will easily pass.

There is quite a bit to read, and write (both by hand and computer), but is not all that bad once you get into the philosopher's writings and arguments. I highly recommend you take Dr. Soden.

I took a 5 week summer philosophy class and Professor Soden was a really great professor. Most of the work is going to be written on paper and I remembered a lot of the readings since I have to write them down. Exams are also written essays and if you do the homework it is easy. He grades really quick and it is a really fun class

John Soden is an excellent teacher for PHIL 1301. His lectures are very interesting and makes learning fun. He is also very patient and helps when needed. He does make you journal at the end of every class for 10 minutes to test your understanding but other than that, his class is very easy.

He is really caring and his lectures are very easy to understand. You will be writing a lot because you will journal after class. No homework. We do have one group project, but it was easy. You will read in class but it's optional if you want to participate to read.
