Dr. Soroski is a decent prof. He seems to favor males and does not have a problem with making you feel stupid in front of others. He does not try to force his opinion on you however, he has a hard time accepting the opinions of others. He is VERY FORMAL--in his appearance and teaching methods. Overall an OK prof.
The class is "History of Political Thought"... a dreadfully boring class. He makes it somewhat interesting by engaging in friendly debates with the students. The final was way harder than the midterm and overall he is a tough marker, and an average prof
Was very approachable and helpful when need be. Fair marker, good prof on the whole.
Dr. Soroski is extremely knowledgable in the area of Political Science. At times he can come across as borish, but is open to people stating their opinions, as long as it is relivant. Of course, if you state your opinion he will question you on it, so be prepared to defend what you say. Overall a very, very good Prof.
A horrible professor. Knowledgeable but a total jerk. Not open-minded at ALL - if you don't share his opinion then you're wrong. If you raise your hand watch what you say or he'll make you feel useless. Maybe make his class your LAST resort...
Really knowledgable about Canadian Politics! Can be mono-tone. If you are interested in politics in Canada, you should have no problem following along. Brings up really good discussion!
good performance, is hard on marking but you have to make the effort to improve, recommend try to particpate in class
Great professor! Completely changed my interests in Canadian Politics! Make sure to participate in class. Be prepared to defend your comments with actual arguments and not "coffee shop" arguments, as he calls them. Use his comments on your papers for future ones. He will push you to reach your potential. Oh, and don't skip or be late!!
Very knowlegeable Professor, but an extremely hard marker, marks papers as if they're dissertations. Always be on time and attend class and don't argue unless you have facts to back you up.
Full year Canadian Politics class. He was very prepared and detailed about his lectures. Interesting lectures for the most part but be ready to take LOTS of notes (they will save you in midterm and final exams). He gives great insight and is passionate about his topic. The exams are short answer and very direct from lectures
Great professor! Must go to his classes, all his tests are from his notes. Do not really need the textbook. His classes run a bit long, because he likes argument. Be aware, if you argue, he expects you to be able to back it up.
Awesome Prof, I was afraid going into this class because of reading past comments about him being harsh, but he turned out to be nothing like that. Always careful not to offend anyone, extremely knowledgeable, and always has fresh examples to keep u interested. Must take notes when he is talking. Just writing down the slides won't help you.
Good prof. he is very passionate about Canadian politics. Come prepared to debate in class with facts! exams are good, not too hard. Hard marker on papers but he wants you to really analyze the facts. Listen in class and you will do well.
He is extremely knowledgeable - he likes discussion. Make sure you know what you're talking about if you decide to speak. He doesn't intentionally make u feel stupid - only if you say something stupid. When you write your exams, you can never write enough. If you think its enough write more. Make sure he knows that you know your stuff & you'll A it
This guy is a bore, take lots of notes, or at least try to. He is also an ass so try not to speak about something unless you really know what you're talking about. Sometimes hard to understand and is quite pompous. Im gonna say he's an acquired taste. The good thing is you can still pass the class without passing the midterms.
Very good prof. knowledgeable in what he is talking about. Hard marker, likes class discussion. I was suprised by some of the comments, I don't find him arrogant at all. Never seen him make anyone feel stupid. Really like the course, I didn't have any interest in politics before, now I think I will major in it. Excellent prof!!!
His lecture style is boring and he goes too fast, but on days when there's class debate it's awesome. He tells you exactly what to study so make sure to attend the exam review classes. Never did figure out what he wants in a paper. Usually papers are my strong suit, but I couldn't please this guy. Never in his office to help you. Not bad, not great
Some lectures would be boring, but debates were always interesting. Always encouraged students to get involved. Gave huge hints during exam review days. Reading the textbook is a waste of time if you're only looking for a good grade. Taking notes, and reviewing them is key! Exams are 99% based on notes!
hes horrible and boring and thinks hes so smart but he aint
He's Awesome! He may seem a little harsh but he's determined to make sure his students know what's necessary. He definitely knows his stuff and is willing to help students in and out of class. His class discussions are very interesting which is a good break from boring lectures.
Great person and great professor. I can see how some first year students would find him boring, he articulates his words in a very intellectual and considerate manner, which may come off as boring. His notes are very helpful, after reviewing the text book I did find majority of his notes in the text book. Great class, come in open minded.
Dr. Soroski is a brilliant man who knows his politics inside and out. He will crush your opinion if youre talking out of your ass so have facts (no coffee shop talk!) As a tip dont say that Alberta pays more towards equalization payments because he will come down on you with the furry of a thousand suns. Engage in class discussions!
While wirting his papers keep it factual! Show that you have interest in the subject matter and it will help....with that said he is very difficult to please when it comes to papers (averages B+) and very difficult although possible to obtain an A you just need to write a very good quality paper....with that said his exams are typically easier
so boring, and rushed through material. Worst class.
Overall a good prof, he was not the most clear in his lectures, but after going through the notes they made more sense (he would stop halfway through a point and continue it the next class). If you are not there to take notes you would probably fail this class. He is a fair marker on essays and his exams are exactly what he says they are.
Attendance is mandatory - exams are strictly based from his notes. Take notes, and you will get an easy A. He was helpful outside of class for extra help but he takes FOREVER to give back marks on exams/papers. Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Soroski.
A list of things wrong with his class. 1) Takes him forever to get back to you via email 2) Doesn't have blackboard nor uploads notes online 3) Doesn't have any notes meaning you must keep up with his fast pace non sense for a hour 4) Gets angry when you ask him a question and are wrong with your terms. 5) don't take his class.
Made Canadian politics interesting. I really enjoyed his lectures about multiculturalism! Kind of intimidating at first, but he's helpful and knowledgeable, and provides insightful/thorough feedback on papers. If you're late for class, do NOT walk in front of him while he's lecturing!
Literally write down everything he says, even though it's tough to keep up at times. Not the most exciting lecturer, but he's incredibly knowledgeable. Exams are straightforward (there is NO guesswork): if you do badly, you have only yourself to blame. Attend class, take notes, and stay on top of things... 'nough said.
Refreshing prof. shares his opinion. May not agree, but illustrates a pragmatic approach to formulating one's stance, encourages students to think. Attend EVERY class, take down notes of everything he says (EXAMS 100% based), miss a day take the textbook out of the library to read up on what was covered. BE ON TIME OR HE WILL RIP YOU ONE
Dr. Soroski is best described as a monotone, dry lecturer who has not changed anything in his course since he began teaching it. He is rude to students (saw it several times in class), and he only tests on what he talks about in class. Textbook not necessary. No online notes. Its easy to see he has no interest in teaching other than for the money.
Incredibly knowledgable and takes a pragmatic approach to issues. I learned a lot from his class. Great if you are interested in the topic, if not I could see it being boring. Takes lots of notes, and attend every class.
Final year student, disinterested in topic, was dreading this elective, he made it awesome. Not rude at all, just passionate & opinionated. I missed a quiz then aced an exam & he re-weighted it. Nice guy. To-the-point. Case studies made concepts easy to remember. Txt unnecessary, just take THOROUGH notes. Laptop suggested. FAST talker. Nice eyes :)
Does not use blackboard or videos or anything else. Puts up one or two slides per class and rambles for the entire 90 minutes. Boring, makes no sense and just expects the class to know exactly what he's talking about. Doesn't use the textbook and his notes don't line up with the course outline and the chapters that should be discussed each class.
Such a horrible prof. His lectures had no organization at all. He rambles on about his own opinions and his notes are brief and confusing. If you skip class, good luck because he is not willing to help whatsoever. I dreaded going to his lectures. In fact, most students fell asleep. Horrible.
Great prof that knows his stuff. Assignments were fun and pretty easy. Exams are harder, be sure to pay attention in class because that's where they're deprived from.
I've had a few classes with Prof. Soroski, this was my first 300-level. I like his lecturing style, he's crazy knowledgable and has good group discussions. That being said this class was tougher with a big written assignment and essay-style exams. I also found the material was presented in a less structured way which made it tougher to grasp.
No blackboard, no study guide, no use of textbook. 3pts on a slideshow + rambles all class. Barely gives hints on what will be exam questions. MONOTONED! doesn't look at students only the clock and rambles. HARDEST MARKER EVER! there is no making him happy. Trust me and just RUN! if u NEED this class, get a study buddy.. for realz.
Push through 224 and get to 225 because it is SO worth it. It's easily my favourite class this semester because the parliament enactments are so much fun. Really just loved this class but like most people I also hated 224. Push through.
No blackboard. Doesn't use the textbook. If you have an article/reading he tends to critique them to his left-wing agenda. Pays lip service to fairness in balancing left and right wing ideas and views but hardly makes an honest attempt. However, if you agree with him 99% of the time and bow down to his opinions you will get a decent grade.
Sure he doesn't use blackboard but he really knows his stuff.
just gonna start by saying don't take this class. he talks so fast and monotone it's hard to keep up with notes. he reads off the powerpoint and then drones on about random irrelevant stuff. he started using Blackboard halfway through the semester. no answer is ever good enough on a test. very boring and difficult overall
Like most people, I had a really hard time getting through 224/225 with Soroski. He can be a little combative and likes a lot of detail in assignments and exams. That said, he is 100% the kind of prof who will make you a better student. Take a 400 level with him and you'll have great conversations, be pushed to think, and become better for it.
Worst marker I've encountered. No clear grading rubric and doesnt even give feedback on tests only a number grade. Tests are irrelevant to what is tought in classes.
Good guy. He rubs people the wrong way, and seems not to care for students. Don't let his gruff demeanour mislead you, he loves his students and is willing to help you out if you seek his help.
One of my favourite professors at MacEwan. Seems salty, but truly cares about people's educations. Will call you on your bullcrap, but it's nothing personal if you're an idiot. Don't walk in front of him and don't cite your lived experience, or he'll give you a verbal Shawinigin handshake
Easily the hardest and worst prof I've had for POLS. Tests + Final HARD. study as hard as you can, but even then he probably won't be pleased with your answer. Very tight word limit on papers, so it's hard to write your full thoughts while staying within the limit, and he is very critical on layout and what you write. Hard to please and unclear.
Honestly one of the easier classes, but you must go to every class or you will fail. He talks in the same mundane voice and gets super boring and harder to get through his lectures as semester goes on, but midterms are easy as you get options, papers however are hard.
POLS 224 is rather easy if you possess a pre-existing knowledge of Canadian policy. However, Dr. Soroski has very specific grading criteria and can be quite combative if you do not agree. In most cases, the ones who truly experience this are those bring it upon themselves. Present your opinions in an intelligent manner and you'll be fine.
Show up to class, take good notes, read your notes, and you should do fine. All exams are 100% based off of the slides from the lectures so attendance is mandatory. However, he tends to be a bit montoned when he lectures and will sometimes go off topic for a good 10-15 minutes, making it challenging to take notes at times. Overall, pretty good.
Dr. Soroski is one of my favourite profs. He can be monotoned in lecture, and this may affect your focus. DO pay attention; the man knows his stuff. He does not post full notes online (Skeletal notes are on blackboard) so you have to show up -- or have a friend take notes. Overall, I enjoy his classes, and intend on taking more with him.
Easily the worst prof at Macewan. He goes on long tangents that have nothing to do with the course material. his voice is so monotone it could put you to sleep and he doesnt seem to have passion for the subject matter at all. i do not recommend this prof as he does not give clear learning outcomes and he is a crazy difficult marker. not worth it
Such a difficult marker. He does not care for debate he would rather have you spit his own ideas back to him. He is rude when students ask questions and acts like he does not like his job. It is hard to go to a class everyday with someone with such a negative demeanor
Dr. Soroski's lectures are sometimes hard to follow (very monotone), but he knows what he's talking about. His tests are very fair and straight from his lectures, notes, and the textbook. Only have to write two papers, neither of which are very long. Overall one of my favourite profs I've had so far and would definitely take another class with him.
This professor is a hard marker, a quiz, midterm, essay and final were what grades were based off. I found there wasn't enough feedback on any of my assignments to improve or even understand where I went wrong and when I asked in class I seldom got enough helpful info. Over complicates concepts more than they needed to be.
You can tell he is very passionate about what he is teaching but he forgets we all don't have a PHD in Poli sci, especially an intro class. Get ready to take good notes as he just talks the whole time and doesn't have info on his slides. Very vague on marking. He will tell you what to study for midterm and final which is nice.
Weak professor that is probably the most monotone and boring professor at macewan. If he finds out you skip class good luck on exams, he will grade you very hard and without any remorse. Avoid if possible unless you're ready to be bored every class. Tests are all written responses to definitions.
I've had Soroski for numerous courses now and I still cannot figure out what he wants for answers on his exams. A very respectable individual. Highly academic but so much so he is unable to connect with students (so I find). If you love political science you will be okay, if it's not set in your passions do not take him.
I jumped into this class on the last day of drop and switch... what a mistake!!! There is another prof that teaches this class who offers more interaction with the class. I found John Soroski to be more than dry. He took Canadian history and painted it grey with his monotone manner. Avoid this prof for the love of Canada!
He does indeed have very dry lectures, but show up for them and take good notes. His exams are strictly from his lectures. I got an A+ on his midterm without opening the textbook. Lots of group work in this course as lots of it is around a Canadian Parliament simulation, including election campaigns and party platforms. 224 is a prerequisite.
While Soroski's lecture style can be difficult to adjust to initially, it is extremely thorough and provides excellent context for the content of the course. This course is straight forward and Professor Soroski is accessible by e-mail and seems happy to provide help. He gives excellent feedback on assignments and exams. My favorite professor sofar
His lectures are hard to follow. Talks really really fast and in a very monotone manner.. Very boring lecture very very dry.. Also his notes are really bad.
worst prof I've ever had. his lecture is very much so influenced by his personal opinion. avoid. at. all. costs. he is so vague with what he wants to see in assignments and test answers, such a difficult marker. oh! and he's passive-aggressive. I'v shed REAL tears over this class multiple times. it blows he's the only prof that teaches this course
By far the worst lecturer for such an easy course. His powerpoint are very vague and no help at all. In class he mumbles and mumbles so much that he gets off topic and you have no idea what he saying. He spends so much time on the same slide which back tracks the schedule and by the end of the year there was so much uncovered content. Do NOT TAKE
lectures were the most boring thing ever. I came to class always prepared and tried to follow along but was absolutely dreadful to try and stay awake in class. If you try and teach yourself it wont help, he asks for SPECIFIC examples which he doesnt provide on his PowerPoint notes, just briefly in his dry lectures. Very hard to follow along.
Soroski's grading criteria is like the krabby patty secret formula, his writing is illegible, taking notes in his class is a bit difficult because of his overzealous use of academic jargon (5 words worth of information he can turn into a 20 word sentence), I used the textbook to study for exams, can be gruff with students. Good guy, sense of humour
I would argue he's the worst polisci prof at MacEwan. Took him for both 224 & 225, Demeaning, rude, and felt like I had to take his opinion on exams so I would be graded better. Debates are just relaying his option back to him, cried over his course numerous times. Presentations/Debates? Not confident? You won't do well. Avoid if you can.
As a student currently enrolled in his online class... I can agree with these reviews. HE SUCKS. He posts the most boring, monotone youtube videos, as well as power points with 2 random words on each slide. He is rude when emailing you (ex. "As a second year student I am astonished you did not know _____.") I could not believe a professor said this
Can be very boring. The online video format is dry, consisting of 20-50 minute lectures on specific minutae, sometimes 4 or 5 videos per topic, it's like sifting through a desert's worth of sand. Coursework is also explained via video, not rubric, and can leave you very confused. If you have previous knowledge of National Government, you'll be fine
I agree with a lot of comments. Previous knowledge of the Canadian Government, and you will do well in this class. If you don't have previous Candian Government knowledge, good luck. My advice is to work super hard because he is a tough marker. I also agree with the lectures being dry. If you study the textbook watch lecture, you will do fine.
Dr. Soroski is a decent prof, however he very passive aggressive, and can come across rather rude. He grades papers or assignments on his opinion and provides no reasoning for it. His lectures are dry and and he incorporates way to much personal opinion which goes off topic and can get confusing. Regurgitate what he says and youll be fine.
I like Canadian politics and I found Dr. Soroski to be very knowledgeable on the subject. He explained a lot of what I wanted to know more about and gave unique assignments that posed interesting challenges. However, lectures were released inconsistently, with 5 hours of new material in a week after a month of nothing, and they were fairly dense.
Dr Soroski is quite opinionated, which was refreshing as it allowed for some pretty intellectually engaging discussions. He may disagree with you, but he is respectful and his only interest is challenging you to think about issues more critically. He is a fair grader, gives clear expectations for assignments. Great prof overall
Soroski dealing with COVID-19 was not the best execution. He left a handful of videos that are already difficult to follow without watching it like 4 times which is impossible with 4 other classes with the same amount of videos. His knowledge of the content is amazing though I just wouldn't recommend him right now. I just WISH it was synchronous...
Not a bad prof, has amazing knowledge but is no personable. Takes a superiority complex that comes across as insulting and demeaning. In person I likely would have dropped. That being said, lectures are tedious and dry, papers are impossible with him and exams require a lot of specific detail. Structure much better than last term, grades take long.
He's a hard marker. He won't assume the class fails because of his teaching style, he assumes the student isn't good enough. He has a superiority complex even though he is knowledgeable. He's opinionated, dry, and his grading scheme is hard to understand. Regurgitate his opinion, read the textbook and follow his lectures. His material is dense.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class, but a lot of my classmates did not. Use the power points as a guide for your notes and regurgitate what is said on exams and youll do great. Use the textbook to fill out your notes. Background knowledge of Canadian politics is needed to do well.
I took Pols 224 with Dr Soroski, he's super knowledgeable when it comes to Canadian Poltics. He definitely has an opinion and it's interesting to hear it. I would definitely recommend him if you're interested in Canadian Politics going into the 300 level.
Soroski's class is messy. He will spend too much of the lecture rambling and overcomplicating topics, making them time-consuming and hard to keep up. His notes are mediocre at best, and the textbook you buy is not needed at all. He barely provides clear guidelines on the term essay and then marks them ruthlessly. Avoid Soroski if you can!
He's the worst & he knows it. Rambles and drowns on. Not interested in seeing his students succeed. Has tenure so it doesn't matter how he is to students. Only prof that teaches Canadian politics, many students avoid this route and will go IR based. Very short and blunt in response to asking for help. Honestly the worst prof I've ever taken.
A paper, midterm and final is all that's required in this course. Watch the lectures and read the textbook chapters according to the provided power points and you will do fine. He is a dry lecturer but is incredibly knowledgeable. Exams are straight forward. Try to be politically neutral in papers and you'll do fine!
The worst Prof I have ever had. Soroski DOES not care about his students, nor does he care about their well-being. There is no room for improvement whatsoever in his class. It takes five business days to reply to your email. He READS off of the slide the entire class. AVOID if you can!
This class is very dependent on lectures and you must be present in order to pass the class, yet his lectures are so excruciatingly boring. He could ramble on talking to a wall for hours and still interact with that wall more than he does with his students.
Soroski makes some great points in his lectures, but he's a tough grader and his lectures seem to always go on a tangent. Powerpoints are not well structured and there is not much room to improve if you score low on one of his assignments. He expects lengthy written response answers for his finals and marks very hard. Not flexible.
He's rude. Has tenure so he doesn't care about students. Have to repeat word for word to do well on exams. So many students drop his classes. Overall, terrible person.
Most mono-tone lectures are almost like white noise. Questions on tests are unclear as he doesn't say what he is looking for as an answer. Tells class after what he was looking for a on quizzes/tests and his slide shows are useless.
The best way to get through his class is with a study group, Soroski does not teach in the best method, but the collective struggle of the class can create a good study atmosphere, whatever you do, don't miss class, take notes on everything and listen to his rants they hold little pieces f information that will help you on the essay and exams
He rambles for 80 minutes straight without engaging his students at all. I found it very difficult to focus and pick up information from his long and drawn-out lectures. His tests however were easy to take as he was very clear about what would be on them. He's very passionate about politics, you might not mind him if you are too.
I don't doubt the 5 star reviews were left by him himself. Listen to me and listen close... DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! Only thing i can agree with is that he is super knowledgeable, but that does nothing for a student if you lack the ability to convey that knowledge in a way students can understand. Wears his class average of 60% like a badge. regret
The course content was easy to understand and there were clear guidelines on the midterm, paper, and the final. However, he fails to engage with students and instead spends the whole lecture basically talking to himself and about things he finds interesting. Rarely will he ever mention any relevant info. Avoid him if you can.
Dr. Soroski is a great academic, and though he might be intimidating at first he is truly an excellent professor and scholar. With even a moderate amount of interest in the topic of the class and a appropriate amount of effort, you can really enjoy one of his courses. I have found that the content of his classes continues to inform my thinking.
If you're engaged...be prepared for amazing discussions both in, and after class. He doesn't have patience for people who don't truly want to learn...neither should you. If you're interested in the material, the class is challenging. There is a good tension between what you learn from the text book, and how you actively participate in class.
Soroski is extremely sexist. He dismisses any textbook information suggesting sexism is prevalent today and addresses female students in class with: "Sexism does not exist today." I dropped my poli sci minor because I couldn't stand to take him again, considering his conduct with female students. He teaches POLISCI required courses... unacceptable.
