Very interesting and funny teacher. Wasn't too sure about philosophy but its been my favorite class this semester. Decent amount of work, not too much. Easy tests if you do the assignments. Take this teacher if you think philosophy is interesting!
Very helpfull and intresting
I cannot say enough great things about Professor Spano. He has a passion for his subject, and it shows in his teaching. He makes philosophy very interesting! I most definitely recommend his class.
Mr Spano is a great teacher, very passionate about his subject. I was not thrilled about taking this class at all but he made it fun & interesting. The reviews he gives for tests are exactly what is on the tests.
He made Philosophy very interesting and fun! Very passionate and well versed in the subject, and had allot of class discussions.
Great professor and he makes himself available for conference times if you have questions or need help. He covers a lot of information for exams and usually covers it pretty fast but you have a study guide to go over at home.
Mr Spano is amazing!!
I had Professor Spano for Intro to Philosophy and Phil 2303 (Logic). He is an excellent professor. The Logic class is a bit tough, but Professor Spano is so helpful! He is great at returning emails and is always available for office hours if the Logic problems prove to be too difficult! I definitely recommend him!
When I first started this class, I was very skeptical of it. I thought it would be my least favorite course I was taking all semester.. But it turned out to be one of my favorite. Spano made the class very enjoyable. He is a great teacher who is passionate about his subject. Not to mention, he is pretty funny! Take him!
I took this class because it is required. Dr. Spano is very passionate about teaching. He does expect us to prepare for the tests. I would take him again if the occasion arose.
Enjoyed the class. Made an 'A' but I also read the chapter fully and typed my notes (about 30-40 pages). To pass this course you have to read the chapters and pay attention to the headings and subtopics. He uses a lot of quiz questions on the test as well. The final is the questions from the previous tests- 3 test,4 papers,11 quiz, 4 DB, &final
Dr. Spano was a great teacher! I was very skeptical of this philosophy class until I did it. It ended up being my best class. This class was online, but anytime I had a problem Dr. Spano explained concepts very clearly. I would recommend him to anyone.
Very helpful instructor. The course was on line but the instructor replied quickly to emails and was very fair. Even provided extra credit opportunities. Very highly recommended.
I took Dr. Spano's class without any prior exposure to Philosophy. I found the class to be inspiring and thought provoking. I would highly encourage this class.
I took Spano's PHIL 1301 as a summer 5wk course. Its not a fly by class. I had to read the chapters fully and take notes on info in the book to get an A. He uses some quiz questions on the tests. DBs and papers are easy. What makes the tests difficult is so many short essay questions. 4 tests, 10 quizzes, 4 DBs, & 2 papers.
Spano is so nice such an awesome teacher! Take him! He made me interested in Philosophy and gives you extra bonus points for no reason! Really cares about the subject and his students!
I took this class during the minimester - Dr. Spano was great! He was quick to answer emails and fix any problem that arose. He gave opportunities for extra credit and some quizzes had multiple attempts (a couple were unlimited). The discussion boards were very easy. Overall, though a tough class (didn't understand all of it) it's easy to get thru.
Great professor, and very easy to work with. His class is one big lecture, but he keeps it entertaining. Lets the the students discuss and be a part of the class. He's open and clear. His exams are hard, but he keeps all his notes online, and will help answer the reviews if there is time. Best class of my semester and an awesome professer too.
This guy saved me. I had a hard time at the end of the semester with family troubles and he tried to help me out best he could. I still had to put in effort but I loved class discussions. Hes very enthusiastic and I recommend him to anyone. I made a C also because of 2 other heavy load work classes. Philosophy isn't a fly-by class to begin with.
This class was extremely informational. I took it during Summer II and man was I reading every single day. Make sure you keep a planner or something so you can track of what you need to do. Overall, a great class.
Easy class, but prof, is very monotone so it make the class boring. Homework is due before class and before he teaches the material. Tests are not easy but he has let us have a cheat sheet on 2 of them. lots of group discussion in class but the class is still burning even though he tries to make it more fun.
BEST CLASS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Spano made learning philosophy interesting. He would often use Harry Potter examples during lecture which made class more enjoyable. You can tell he is passionate about Philosophy. IT'S A GREAT CLASS!!
I took this class in a minimester (2week) course. His class is not a breeze and requires you to read but overall not a tough class to get an A in. Lots of writing assignments but not a tough grader. Gives lots of extra credit! Definitely recommend him for philosophy. He cares for his students.. I text him with any questions!
Passionate and knowledgeable. Possibly my favorite class and professor I've ever taken.
John Spano is an incredible professor and one of the most caring people I've ever met. He encourages class discussion and you get to use notes on the tests. I took him last semester and he still stops me in the hall to ask how I'm doing. By far the best (and hottest) professor I've had outside of my major. I'm considering taking his Ethics course.
Great Professor and class. I am not a big fan of philosophy so this class was hard for me. I worked hard for my A. He gives extra credit and I took advantage of it all. There is a Midterm and Final exam (hint: some questions are from the quizzes). 2 quizzes each week (textbook/primary source), 4 discussion boards, and 3 papers.
He uses the whole class time. He lets us use cheat sheets on all of his test (including final). He likes in class group discussions, points for attendance, 10 BB quizzes, 3 exams & a comprehensive final, & take advantage of the extra credit. If you have a sense of humor & an open mind you'll love his class. Another great professor I enjoyed,
I took this class as a minimester. I had a whole unit due each day but it was super easy. If you read the entire chapter-you will pass. The DB's weren't very hard at all and he gives great feedback!
Enjoyed this class. A lot to read, but I took this as a summer class. He is very helpful. I actually enjoyed learning philosophy.
Mr. Spano is THE best! I have loved his class. He's very understanding, funny, and he does an excellent job of putting things into a perspective that you can relate to. I have loved taking his class so much that I have been considering changing my major to Philosophy. So take Mr. Spano! You won't regret. I wish all of my professors were like him.
Great professor. Very easy going, caring, sincere and super funny. Favorite teacher to date. Would definitely recommend his class. No book, lectures styles vary to keep things interesting. Makes the material relate to you so it's easy to learn. Many opportunities for extra credit. If you skip class you will miss out on things, might still pass.
If you take Spano: - GET THE BOOK! - Make sure your notes are on point - Read the book! Don't skim it. - Do all the extra credit. - Do the second quiz as many times as you can until you get that A... trust me, you'll need the points.
I was not a big fan of Philosophy but he was a really good professor. I took this class for a winter minimester so it was more difficult being that the class was shoved into 3 weeks. He was test heavy but had a clear criteria for what he expected. He is so great with emailing and grading really fast. Every essay you write he gives feedback.
I was not looking forward to taking this class to finish out my degree, but Dr. Spano made is so much easier for me. I took this class online and I did struggle a little bit. He kept encouraging me and assisting me all the way through. He provides great feedback to every assignment and works with you. I would totally recommend this professor!!
Super nice & funny guy. The subject can be kind of boring, but if you pay attention he makes the class fun. Take good notes for tests because he doesn't give a review. Quizzes are if you just show up to class. You have to write 4 short essays but you get credit just for doing them. You do not need the book. I recommend taking his class.
Great Professor. I have taken two classes with this professor. Phil 1301 and 1316 (Religion). I took mini semesters so it is faster pace and a lot of reading, but he is encouraging and does not grade too hard. He is big on Plagiarism so just make sure you cite what is not your own thoughts. My courses were online and he is easy to get in touch with
He gives CLEAR expectations. Not a tough grader. Responds to emails really quick.
Mr Spano was great at teaching PHIL 1301. It was foreign to me and I enjoyed it, but didn't think I actually would. Very time consuming (Summer 2 class). Lots of essays to write. Chapter tests. Lot crammed in -- but that is how summer class works. If this class is required -- pick him!!! Grades quick and gives nice feedback.
The only homework is the online quizzes, and there is no textbook for this class. All his readings are posted online, and you don't even have to read them carefully. Very laid back professor who encourages class discussion, and his lectures are fascinating.
Dr. Spano knows his subject very well. He is a caring person. He talks to you like a friend and I like that very much. The amount of the assignments and tests are just right for the class. Overall, it was not a hard class at all, just read when he tells you to and pay attention to the important events and people when prepare for exams! Great class!
Dr. Spano is AMAZING. He is SUPER nice and caring. He is very clear and lets use the exam review on the test, so it's relatively easy to pass.
Prof. Spano is very laid-back, nice and enjoyable to listen to. He also allows a cheat sheet for exams. Although, his tests are very difficult because they are hardly related to his lectures or reviews.
Professor Spano is an awesome professor! He is very passionate about the subject and gives amazing lectures. He is always available for questions. The work load is not heavy at all. The content is hard, but he makes it as easy as possible. He is extremely understanding.
He as a professor was not tough but the class itself can be tough I did this class online for Spring and had about 15-30 pages of reading with an assignment every week it is very doable the readings can be hard to understand but you can email him and he also posts PowerPoints. He is really caring and offers extra credit towards the end. End gradeA
I had a heat experience with Philosophy 1301. Took in person and enjoyed the class immensely. I never had even read a philosophy book and was a little worried about the, but he encourages questions and loves feedback. I highly recommend him.
I took this class during Summer 2, Dr. Spano wants you to succeed and gives great feedback. You do need the book and the readings are long. 11 textbook quizzes, 7 primary source quizzes, 4 discussion boards, 1 paper (very easy), midterm, and a final. If you need to take philosophy.. TAKE DR. SPANO. You won't regret taking him!
Take Dr. Spano! I have never had a professor that cared so much about his students and will do anything to ensure you are passing the class. He is extremely laid back and loves to make his students laugh. This specific class he does lecture the whole time, but provides power points on Brightspace. His test are a little difficult, just go to class!
His class is mainly lectures, but he makes it as simple as possible. He cares about his students and makes sure that everyone is on the same page. 4 tests (4th one being the final) and 4 test reviews. He also let us use a cheat sheet for the first 3 tests. He's a great person. I would highly recommend him!
I took Spano for philosophy and ethics as one of my electives because he is awesome! He is very easy to understand and he welcomes any and all questions. He lets you have a full cheat sheet for all of the tests (including the final) so I didn't study for any of the tests. He gives quizzes but they're online with unlimited tries so super easy.
Dr. Spano is one of my fav. professors at MCC. Though philosophy is not a preferred subject among many, he uses personal stories to make the topic more appealing & comprehensive; he assists students, reviews study guides, offers extra credit, & makes (sometimes unintentionally) funny jokes. It is evident he wants his students to succeed.
Spano is the best at MCC! My brother took his class and recommended him to me, I took him for philosophy and ethics and I would take him again if given the opportunity! He has amazing lectures, gives good stories to help you understand and will even stop and asks to make sure everyone is on the same page. Super caring and understanding!
Dr. Spano is the most caring professor I have had. His class is an easy A, you just have to go to class and take notes, also do the review sheet. Awesome professor!
PhIL 2306 moral phil. The teacher himself is great and helpful. You have essays to write and if they are completed then you usually get a 100. The chapter quizzes are something else though. Very hard (for me). You have a chance to write an essay and receive extra credit
Professor Spano is super funny & mellow, His Tests are just like the study guide plus he lets you use a cheat sheet class involvement is important in this class, he has a lot of class discussions the textbook is only required if you want an A if you're ok with getting a B then you do not need it, he gives you unlimited attempts to take his quizzes
He is a great professor overall and he will work with you, however their is tons of reading and it was a difficult class for me
John Spano is a great professor. His course is VERY dense, but he provides a lot of extra material to help you learn. He also gives great feedback and is happy to help. The only thing is he doesn't let you work ahead - but that's not a huge issue.
Easy A! Dr. Spano is simply the best. I took his mini-mester online (which was nerve-wracking considering Philosophy can be hard even in person), but he made it incredibly simple. Due dates are clear, extra credit is available and hes very understanding. I wish I could take him again, but his course is full.. I can only imagine why!
He is a different type of individual. Very laid back and understanding. Loves to interact with the class.
Dr. Spano is by far one of my favorite teachers! I took him for an eight week class and it was so easy. He tried to make everything as understandable as he could. He is not a tough grader in my opinion. He wants to see you pass and will make it so easy for you to get an A. You can bring a cheat sheet for every test including the final.
Can't say enough great things about Spano. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well and gives everyone endless opportunities to do so. If you don't pass his class you just didn't try.
Pre-rona: Spano is great professor who clearly cares about what he's teaching. There's definitely a lot to take in, and tests can be hard without some studying. He's definitely a good choice. Post-rona: He continued study guides and assignments like usual. A smooth and easy transition, but with more reading.
Took his online class Fall 2020. Class was laid out clear from the beginning. Book is mandatory, but he allows an older version to save $$. He gives excellent feedback after each assignment. He genuinely cares about the material and his students. GREAT PROFESSOR! Highly recommended. Just make sure to read the chapters as instructed and you'll pass
Professor Spano knows how to be a TEACHER! I took his online course and he is a very reasonable guy. He has clear and attainable expectations for his class. It is clear this professor wants his students to succeed, and his teaching style is very easy to follow. This is especially helpful in topics like philosophy that can be more confusing.
Professor Spano made sure to give us updates before the start of every week. You most definitely have to read in order to understand the material but overall not a hard class. There are a few short essays and some short answer questions on a few tests. I like how he always gave feed back on our short essays.
Read, read, and repeat. Listen to his lectures! The text quizzes are 10 questions, 20 minutes, ONE chance. These are 35% of your grade. The questions are hard and you will really need to prepare for the tests. I learned a lot though, and it made me a better student. Good luck!
I took John Spano's intro to philosophy class as a mini-mester and while there was a lot of reading and the class was fast pace, I was able to get an A in the class. As long as you read the textbook chapters you can get an A. He is a pretty easy grader and he will always respond to your emails and really cares about the students!
I absolutely loved Dr. Spano! I took this class over the summer and it was a really rough summer for me, however he really helped me work through everything. we had 13 textbook quizzes, 10 Primary source quizzes , 2 essay exams and one midterm and one final. I would recommend this class to everyone! He is AWESOME!
Great Professor, easy grader, make sure to read the chapters for the textbook quizzes. Easy A
In the beginning, I struggled to the point I was going to drop the class. I met with Professor Spano and finished with an A. He is excellent at explaining the text and records his lectures for the online students, which was a big plus for me. He wants his students to succeed and he will do whatever it takes to help them accomplish that goal.
YOU NEED HIM
There is a lot of reading and you have to try to understand to be successful on the textbook quizzes. He gives regular quizzes which are alittle easier to pass. He is very helpful though. As much as I hate to read I would take him again for another course.
I think Professor Spano was my most favorite professor that I've ever taken at MCC. His classes are more like conversations between him and the students than traditional lectures, and the papers for the class are easy as well. He doesn't have super solid due dates though, so be warned if you're a major procrastinator like me
Excellent professor. Easy class as long as you read and take notes. Make sure to pay attention to the topics each week as eventually you will skip a few chapters. An extra credit assignment is available
I met Mr.Spano through the Honors Program, and can tell you that he is one of the most supportive and understanding directors you will come across. Apart from lectures feeling like conversations, he does well with not overloading work and connecting you with opportunities you otherwise might've missed. 100% recommend.
If anyone needs to take a philosophy course, please take this one and this professor! He will work with you and make sure you know everything you need to know to pass this class. He even reassured me that I was going to graduate, so he definitely cares about his students. Philosophy may be a boring subject, but I learned interesting things!
Dr. Spano is a professor that is all for his students' success! Clear expectations are made, and the course itself is not stressful! I recommend him after taking a different professor and dropping the class. 10/10 recommend :)
His quizzes had a few tough questions but were overall fairly easy. I liked using the online textbook quizzes to help review. 1 textbook quiz and 1primary reading quiz for almost every lesson. two essay exams, which are short and easy. three discussions. A midterm and a non-comprehensive final. He gave great feedback. There is an extra credit.
Dr. Spanos's class was interesting. If you want to make a good grade you have to put in the work. Take advantage of the extra credit assignment! It helps your grade.
I was initially wary to take Ethics as most ratings were on Spano's other classes (only a few here), but it was easy even as a five week summer course, and my grade was a 98! He's easy-going, and a very generous grader! There were 2 quizess per lesson and over half had unlimited attempts. I studied super hard though, so study and you'll get an A!
Out of my two years here at MCC, Professor Spano was probably the best professor I've ever had. He made everybody feel included and it truly feels like there's never a "dumb question" in his class. He makes the material easy to understand and actually made me so much more interested in Philosophy. I would 100% recommend taking Spano for Philosophy.
Professor Spano had fun lectures, attendance mandatory after a few absences your grade drops a little every absence but idk if that's enforced. But he is never strict and understanding. He prefers participation during lectures but more so to add a fun dynamic to the lectures. He gives handouts every lecture which you can use on tests! He is amazing
I took the online course, SUPER EASY! It is lecture heavy but nothing too hard. He gives 1 weekly quiz's and 1 assiments per week. Nothing too hard, would take this class again.
Mr Spano was a very easy going instructor. His grading criteria was clear and understandable. You will be doing reading and chapter quizzes primary quizzes and you will have a midterm and final exam which all comes from your chapter quizzes. Very easy class, do your work assigned to you, read, and you will make an A. SUPER EASY!
Professor Spano is one of the greatest teachers I have had throughout my entire education. He loves to talk and you can tell how passionate he is about his career. He is a very wise man and wants to help you understand and succeed!
I actually had this professor with American Public University for the PHRL 498 Capstone. He knew that I was hoping to get my grades in ASAP, as I needed proof of the degree to advance my career. He exceeded all expectations. He did so the night the final assignment was due. He encouraged clear feedback. He is a wonderful professor. Thank you!
