Good teacher. CRAZY British accent (strongest I have ever heard) but you get used to it. He's very funny, makes humorous examples of lecture material to get his points across. Not a class you're likely to fall asleep in.
He's hot. I think it's the accent. And the fact that he's really funny.... mmmmmm accent.
Sit close to the front cuz of the accent, but has a great teaching style. Great notes, very easy to follow. Communicates the subject material easily. P.S. i have seen someone fall asleep in the class, but it was a guy; girls aren't likely to do this

cutest thing at carleton university
Good professor, strong accent, but does a good job. Only critique is on the testing, when it comes to the final exam there is a ton of material to cover, almost impossible. Other methods classes provided with cheats sheets. Would have been better if tests were non cumulative.
This prof. is awesome. classes are interesting...as interesting as he can make methods and he is very funny and easy to talk to. He also makes good lecture notes to download which really helps...amazing prof!
I sat at the front just to gaze adoringly. Oh, and to learn. Made an otherwise boring topic about as interesting as it could be. Very funny, approachable and helpful. Great smile too....hmmmm
Great class. He can make the most boring topics funny. He has that wonderfully british-bashful sense of humour. I was not expecting to enjoy research meth, but I did. His lectures are clear, easy to follow, and understandable. And he's adorable.
He was a great prof, really smart, really charasmatic. He is easy to listen to, and his exams are pretty easy too!
This is the best professor that I've had so far. He made a realitively boring topic humourous and even intersting at times. And he has such a great accent:D The only problem was that he asked some rather random questions on his tests, which seemed a little out of place considering all of the material that we had to go through. But overall, amazing!
One of the best professors I have had at Carleton. He is very clear in his notes (which are great) and is so entertaining, class flies by. You can tell he's a very intelligent guy but doesn't have a pretentious bone in his body. Anyone who needs research methods in Psych, take it with him!! A+!
FUN PROF!! He made such a boring topic such as research methods FUN! He uses interesting real life examples to help you understand boring topics. He runs and jumps around in class which makes the class even interesting, that and his british accent!
Best professor I have had at Carleton so far, very sweet and helpful. Notes were clear and detailed. Draws examples from real life and made the boring topic of research methods interesting. I would take any class he taught. If you have to take this class make sure you take it with him, you'll never have a better prof!
Very good prof. Helpful, sweet and quite animated. His lectures and examples are very clear, he makes the boring material interesting. The only thing is that his exams aren't very easy. Study from his lecture notes the most.
One of the sweetest and most humorous profs ever! He makes even the most boring things interesting...He's absolutely AWESOME :)
Excellent professor - very humorous and very professional!
*sigh* oh what to say about John Stead...Other than being COMPLETELY adorable and an accent that can make the most uninterested person bat their eyeleashes at him, hes TRULY an amazing prof. Exams are MORE than fair, and totally based on lectures. He is helpful, concise, and hilarious! I definitely recommend him for any course: stats or otherwise.
He is such a great professor! I would defintely take a class with him again, and recommend anyone else to do so. although the material was not the most interesting, he is funny and makes the best out of it. His exams are fair and straight forward!
Was overall a good teacher, but I feel I was unlucky to be a part of a class that didn't fall in his primary interest (neuroscience). He taught class fairly enough, but would sometimes be as clear as mud on a topic and can be wishy-washy when defining exams. Book was completely useless... don't buy it if he says he will likely not be using it.
First off: WARNING! PSYC 2200 is NOT a psychology class! If you want a psyc class like social, personality and developmental psyc, look elsewhere!! This is strictly a biology class! Stead needs to be more concise and clearer in his lectures to get a passing grade. AVOID this class. Stead is a very approachable prof, nonetheless.
I really like John, he's a nice guy and really approachable. He's a great prof, its just that this class was really tough for a psych class. It more of a biology class than anything else. I really found it interesting but regret not taking something else.
John Stead is one of the best profs I've had at Carleton. Lectures are fun and interesting and while the exams cover a LOT of material, they are fair (and based ENTIRELY on lecture notes!) ATTEND CLASSES and give yourself time to study well from the notes and you'll do well. I have NEVER taken any biology classes, and I managed an A! Great Prof!
Like I said 3 yrs ago, JS is one of the BEST profs ever!!! Always makes classes interesting, no matter what the topic, I took his section just because he taught it. I did learn a lot of practical info and enjoyed learning it. He is such an awesome prof, very helpful, very friendly, easy going, talkative!! And his accent is still so fabulous!
He is very animated!
He is awesome. Very funny. The class is not about simple stuff, but he makes the material fun and entertaining and I enjoy class. He's a great prof.
Fantastic prof, super interesting material and the most fair tests I have ever gotten. I worked and got an A+. Take the class!
awesome prof, really easy, detailed powerpooint slides, gives really good examples to explain everything. very interesting to listen to. midterms were easy but the final exam was cumulative, with a few questions out of no where.
mumbles and with his accent it can make it hard to understand at times.
boring class!
great for mathematical idiots like me!!
The most AMAZING professor! I hated and dreaded stats but he not only made it easy and fun but presented the material in a way that any and everyone can understand it. Because of John I have a whole new appreciation for stats. He is an amazing professor and I recommend this class as an elective. If you put in the effort you will see the results!
I love him! He makes a boring subject interesting, has fair tests and really detailed notes. He uses a lot of examples from genetics as that's his main field, I didn't mind that because I have a strong background in bio, but I can see them being confusing for people who have never taken biology before. Still I highly recommend him!
Great prof! amazing guy! one of tvo's top 20 lecturers for 2009-2010!
Outstanding professor! His lessons are very clear - he gives a real-life example of almost every single concept he teaches, which I found REALLY helped. He loves to tell hilarious anecdotes and stories that are actually relevant to what we are learning! He really makes the class very enjoyable, considering it IS the dreaded research methods.
Loved this class. Prof is very clear and does not use the textbook: he expects you to know just the stuff he actually talked about. Two midterms and final, moderate difficulty, but really common sense. When he saw the class getting confused, he always pulled out an example to clarify. (usually rats, smoking, and genetics)
Very well prepared and diligent. Uses examples to good effect.
Byfar the best professor I have ever had! Very clear in lectures, provides detailed slides, and makes material interesting. He is helpful and motivating. Make sure you attend class and take decent notes on what he is saying. Exams were not challenging if you follow his lectures. Take his class, he is a wonderful professor!
Absolutely wonderful! Explained details on methods and managed to make it fun and interesting - the anecdotes are indeed hilarious. HIGHLY recommended!
One of the best profs I have had yet! He made such a dull subject, research methods, actually interesting. We didn't need a textbook, which was huge! The only thing I didn't like about him was that his multiple choice questions were worded a little weird. But he is ridiculously cute, and extremely helpful.
With his accent he is impossible to understand. Was more concerned with getting out of class at the end of the lectures than staying behind and helping people. E-mailed him for help and he told me to ask the TA. Did not show up for our final exam, leaving the TA to deal with all questions. Moves through material WAYYY too fast.
He is a wicked teacher. Research methods suck, but he makes it super easy to understand and makes it a fun class. His exams are easy if you pay attention in class and study. There's no tricks. By far one of the best teachers at this school.
By faaaar, BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! Makes me impatient to become a prof too =D
Great Prof! makes coming to class easier and much more entertaining (especially considering the dry topic). He does have an accent, but is still easy to understand. Gives examples with most concepts that he teaches making the content much easier to learn.
Awesome teacher, he will set you up for success, and NO textbook!
AS GOOD AS IT GETS, honestly all the amazing comments here are all true. The best PROF i have ever had, amazing style, energy and he is so funny! Takes research methods and makes it fun and easy! No textbook, just go to every class and you will get an A, all I can say is RATS AND COCAINE! hahaha...Amazing prof! Best one at Carleton!
Awesome prof. Acknowledges the boredom of research methods, and somehow makes it fun and easy to stay attentive to. If you want to have a chance at passing, make your schedule AROUND his class!
Amazing prof. He know's that research methods is boring so he tries to make it interesting. And if that doesn't work for you, he is adorable. It's a very easy class (just go to class), his midterms are extremely fair. and he doesn't use a textbook!i cannot speak highly enough. best prof i have had yet!
Loved the accent. Very cute. Great guy too. Easy to follow his notes very in depth. Great for research methods
Attendance is mandatory: but he reads off the slides. He can't answer questions posed in class and has no previous experience with the subject matter. his grading schemes vary depending on the student.
Attendance is mandatory only to the seminar section of the class. Really cares about his students and is there to answer questions, will do what he can to find the answers to them. You have to put the work in to get the mark, but it is very possible to get a good mark in this class. It is tough because it is a precursor to your thesis.
tough class but so informative! he wants you to be become an expert on certain topics which is why he asked you to pick 2 chapters for each final. A lot of studying required, but worth it if you are interested in neuroscience.
very interesting class, you really learn alot! His exams were essay based and you really have to know your stuff to do well, but it is very possible if you study hard and memorize the textbook! This is why I love neuroscience.
John is an awesome prof who is super knowledgeable, smart, and caring. Oh, and hes hot. If only my sleep schedule matched his class...
Gives you SO MANY "hints". He outlines exactly what to study in his multiple choice guidelines. If you can answer those, you'll ace the exam. Also provides example questions that show up on the exam. Essay questions are tough, you have to pretty much memorize a whole lecture and understand it. Focus on this more than multiple choice when studying.
Great Prof.
There is a lot of material to cover in the class, but he makes sure you know the important points by clearly outlining what needs to be known well. His essay exams are quite tough, but I actually enjoyed them because it really gets me to know certain neuro topics on point. One of the best profs I've had, and cares a lot about his students
tough course, not really understand the lectures.
Very slow¬ considerate of time; 3 days /wk to teach, 6hrs as opposed to 3& still falls behind on lectures, records lectures from his couch, &feed you a ton of info a day or two before an exam and expect you to learn it without a textbook or resource. Horrible planning of Neur 3200, wait till after 2017 when they get rid of that course.
NEUR3200 is a tough class because it has a ton of material and not enough time to learn it, not because Dr. Stead is a bad prof. Dr. Stead is a hard marker, but he is fair. He is always enthusiastic and clear when lecturing, and he clearly cares about his students. Show up to class, put in the work, and you will do well.
Hard course, just go to class cuz he posts questions that will show up in the exams, this is the reason I go to class even though it is hard to understand the topics from him. Make sure he knows u cuz he answers questions in details for students he knows unlike for student he doesn't know. He also lets u know what to study for the MC.
Tough class. Never been so proud of such a medeocre grade. All I can say is long your hours and study really hard for the midterms. the essay and presentation should boost your mark a bit.
John is nice, easy to talk to & gives good explanations. He consistently falls behind in lectures despite holding class 6 hours a week. Gives you the questions that will be on the exam in class but has the most arbitrary marking scheme. 500 text-loaded slides per 15% midterm. There is WAY too much material for this course. Kiss your GPA goodbye!
If you care about your GPA or mental health - stay away. Worst professor you will ever have, gives so much content for one test that it makes you want to rip your own face off, spends the entire year making you feel stupid only to flip the first page of the final exam and see NEUR3200/5000. Yep, he taught the third years graduate level content.
Besides being a horrible professor and giving too much/too advanced content to his students, he is completely rude and degrading. Talks down to everyone, insults his students, his TA's and his own kid. He is obviously butt hurt about the neuro department moving and took all of his anger out on his students. I've never met a more miserable human.
This class was the worst thing this year has brought on, taking away the last shred of happiness I had. Not only is he not willing to help his students but he throws information at us like a machine and expects us to memorize loads of content just for a measly 15% midterm.
Someone needs to tell this Stead that we have other courses that were taking and not everything is about him and his epitome-of--an-extra course. He made the class impossible to follow along with his crazy hand gestures, and his slow and confusing teaching style.
This course won't be offered anymore, but if you have a chance to take a course with him, you should do it. He is SUPER CLEAR about the material you will be tested on, gives you ALL the questions for SA and MC. The slides had everything, so you don't need to go to class but it is recommended.
Really caring, wants you to succeed- very approachable. This class was a bit dry on content but I still enjoyed his teaching style, was very clear on what is and isn't important and makes videos going over certain things we covered in class to post on cuLearn. Assignments are very fair, if you go to class you are pretty much guaranteed A+ on them.
John did his best to make stats worth listening to. If you're worried about falling asleep, don't worry you literally can't. The content ramps up real fast + real bad and the final exam blew my wig off my head. Assignments are easy grade boosters. Do well on those because the exams will absolutely take your breath away. Don't take unless necessary
Youll learn that everything he finds interesting is important and everything else isnt. Take him with a grain of salt.
Dr. Stead is a fair professor.. If you put the work in you will get the results. DO NOT think that NEUR3001 and 3002 are easy, they aren't. You need to go to class take good notes and study a lot to do well. I found Dr. Stead made a difficult class easier, but it was still hard. He is one of the best professors at Carleton.
Unclear in his teaching and wording of questions on tests. Often tries to make up for this with extended over-explanations which might help some but I find it just makes it worse.
The worst professor I have had so far at Carleton. He purposely makes midterms and exams hard and puts material we have never covered in class. He gives you a glossary to study for the exams for definition questions but he always uses definitions that weren't on the glossary. Lectures are dry and he talks too much about his kids.
During a pandemic: After sending a billion emails, uploading all lectures (stripping us from normalcy), and reminding us nothing in his course changes, he emails us to say he was disturbed to see a low percentage of students accessing the lectures. He used the word "disturbed." I am DISTURBED by the lack of compassion, and accommodation.
He is the worst professor I have had at Univeristy. He does not care about his students at all. When i went to see my midterm after it had been graded the TA told everyone she felt bad because he forced her to grade hard (i lost marks because it was not word for word). His final exam he said would have 13 short answers, it had 43. Do not recommend!
John was an excellent professor. I learned so much in his class and he was incredibly compassionate. One of the best at Carleton.
Let's just start by saying this is definitely not the most interesting class, and he is well aware of it. However, he is a fantastic lecturer. Super charismatic, energetic and engaging. Exams are quite dense and difficult so you need to ask questions and understand the materials. Assignments are the best preparation and easy A's if you do it proper
He is the absolute sweetest prof, very good at explaining and very accommodating!
John is a very nice guy but he makes this class extremely hard for what it is. His worksheets and quizzes are very hard and super time consuming. He also gave a survey for our feedback but just responded with "here are mental health resources" but did nothing towards listening to student feedback and making changes to the course. Avoid this class!
I have mixed feelings about John - he is such a nice man but he expected all his students to fully commit to his class like a full time job in the middle of a pandemic. Made the lecture videos so long and the worksheets and assignments were super hard and took forever to do. I hate that this class is mandatory for honours - be prepared to work.
The workload is WAY too much for this course. The assignments and quizzes are not very hard, but working through the lectures takes many MANY hours. Lectures are dense and full of unnecessary information, but all the material is fair game for quizzes. He's unwilling to reduce the courseload claiming that 8 hours min of work per week is standard.
The lectures are scheduled to be 3 hours a week. He gives 5 and a half hours a week - this is way too much. He does not make an effort to be concise. If his lectures weren't bad enough, worksheets are another timesink . This course's one redeeming quality is that it there is no final exam. John's a good prof, but his lecture strategy needs work.
Probably the WORST prof I have ever had at Carleton. John expects students to treat his course like a full time job and thinks that all his students have no life and can commit fully to his course . Gives WAY too much work and his worksheets take forever to complete. Quizzes are also quite difficult, and this guy lacks compassion.
John is such a nice man and cares for his students but when you look at his NEUR3001/3002 course it seems like he has a wrath against his students. The workload expectations was ridiculous especially considering that we were in a pandemic. Also did not respond to feedback that was not positive. Really disappointed, since he is such a nice guy.
I avoided NEUR 3001/02 like the plague & did it in 4th yr bc of how much I hated 2001/02. BUT if you really put in the work and pay attention to the videos, you'll do well. John is really sweet, caring and IS accommodating, despite the negative reviews here. He wants you to succeed, TRUST me. I still hate neuro stats, but just a little less now.
John is a solid guy, he tries to makes things as clear as possible in the lecture content and the assignments are very easy. The quizzes are much more difficult and should be prepared for at least two days in advance. Hes also easy on the eyes!
The workload in this class is way too much. His lectures are way too long because you basically have to watch "before" videos before coming to class which doesn't make sense, it's as if he's trying to force his lectures to be longer than they should. He goes way too fast in class and it's hard catching what he's doing.
This prof overcomplicates and goes by topics way too fast. He rushes lectures, and doesn't take a moment to fully explain something and make sure everyone understands before moving on. He also shows a lot of attitude when you reach out to him for help. The assignments and exams are also marked extremely harshly, and he has no compassion for studen
literally the WORST FIN PROFF UGHHH
John is the best. I had him for 3001 & the whole mix of online/in person content was a lot, but for 3002 he understood our feedback and changed the course for the better. He sets his assignments up so you will get a high mark, and they make up 50% of the class so you basically can't fail the course. He's so entertaining and gives good explanations.
I guess taking John's class online was challenging based on the comments from during covid, but he has definitely made up for it now that classes are in person again. He uses simple analogies to help us understand the reasoning behind complicated concepts, posts recorded lectures online, and lecture slides are very detailed. Would highly recommend.
I wasn't excited about this class at first, but it ended up being one of my favorites. John is super nice and always takes time to help if you're struggling. The exams are really fair if you study you'll be fine. The assignments are set up so you can easily score in the 90s, and he explains everything in a way that ACTUALLY makes sense.
Very heavy material but the worksheet and grading is fair. However, to require students to study fully 8 powerpoint each ranging from 90 to 200 slides and to say everything is fair game on the exam as well as not allowing a cheatsheet is insane.
When asked about trick questions, he said, "I try not to include any, but all choices are plausible answers." A good professor explains material concisely, which he lacks. His theatrical lectures feel like a poorly executed early 2000s play. If you don't absolutely need this class, AVOID IT.
