Rambles on but funny...not much to do. in class assignments. good guy
nice man, tests can be very hard, but he is very fun in class
very pleasant, intelligent, handsome and personable. I wish he were my Dad
Such a nice guy, will do almost anything to help you learn, one of my fav's! :)

good guy. tests kinda odd, class goes by fast.
THE BEST! He cares so much for all of his students and wants them to be the best
Genuinely cares for students even though some students seem to complain about having to actually do work. Funny, outgoing, and provides a unique approach to teaching. The workload is reasonable. Great professor. Try and you will get a good grade.
A fun prof who makes the time fly by. He cares deeply for the students and will work with you if you have any concerns or problems. Just ask for help when taking tests and you'll be fine. He's someone you gotta take in the SCOM department
The best SCOM professor around! He's an awesome guy, great professor. Truly cares about students and has a passion for public relations. Will help you with anything you need, ever! He is simply the best.
Real good guy. Pretty easy too. Actually cares about his students...unlike some professors.
I LOVE this man! He is the BEST TEACHER I have EVER had in my life! Other teachers should all be more like him, then maybe we would enjoy going to class! Take his class if you can, he is such a blessing to have as a teacher, wonderful and intelligent man.
Funny, class is enjoyable. Tests are a little wierd, but overall an easy class. You really get to interact with the people in your class without projects. Take him.
Great teacher, he honestly cares how students do. Makes class fun and entertaining. you'll actaully want to go. Take him if you can!

this class maybe easy but it is because the man doesnt teach. You learn absolutely nothing,it is a crazy easy B,but if you want an A you have to teach yourself so you can pass the final. Overall a waste of time.
AWSOME. even though its gcom, still study for quizes. hes very chill and understanding. works with you to make up missed work. definately get this teahcer, hes wicked cool.
Great guy - really knows what he is talking about- go to class, do your work and you will do well
He's such a funny teacher to listen to. However, he doesn't really teach you very much, but it's worth going to class just to listen to the stories he tells!
He is such a good professor! He gives a quiz every couple of weeks, and he gave us a study guide the day before, went over the entire thing, and still could actually use it during the quiz! Midterm was easy, all bold-face terms! Definately recommend him!!
The only rason i went to class was to here some of his crazy stories. He is by far the coolest teacher.
This man knows everything! You'll learn a lot in this class. He's also really nice and easygoing and isn't a hard grader. Take him!
This guy is great. he has really random stories that makes class great. every quiz has a study guide you can use on the quiz and he goes over it right before the quiz. you only say 2, casual speeches and he will help you all he can. great guy.
Absolutely hysterical. The subject is boring, yet Dr. Stone keeps the class extremely entertaining. Study guides before every quiz. Cares about every one of his students. You don't realize how much you are learning until you actually take the cumulative final. Definitely take Dr. Stone!!
He teaches you a lot, but you never feel lost. Also, his stories are hysterical. Great guy.
Nicest and funniest teacher I've ever had. Super teacher and DEFINATELY take him if you get the chance. Class is a breeze too.
haha funny man keeps the 8 am class awake. Open note quizzes but read the book for the final. Always has a funny story and is obsessed with his brandy
i hate this man. all he does in class is ramble on and on about his cat and any other random story that pops into his head. his notes dont make sense at all so read the book. presentations are a joke (he gives EVERYONE an A). all i do in that class is doodle and count the minutes until it's over.
This guy is the best teacher to take for any GCOM. Don't listen to rating b4 this one, this person obviously had a rough childhood if they don't enjoy Dr. Stone. The man is funnier than Joey Gladstone's mullet, very nice, and very laid back. Easy class, I looked forward to going b/c of his stories.
Take him! Easist teacher ever. If you do a speech you get an "A". barely any worked required. Group quizzes and goes over study guide in class - can use on quizzes. midterm and final only tests. very fair grader. Very funny also, great for recommendations
Hilarious, very clear about the material. I went into it thinking I'd hate the class and it would be a drag gen-ed course, but now I look forward to it just because the prof is so interesting and has tons of great stories. Very interesting and fun teacher. Take his class!
Good teacher take him! He's funny and the class is easy
Nicest, most helpful person ever. Very friendly and fun to talk to outside of class. Who doesn't love Dr. Stone? I love him more than a fat woman loves Crisco.
It's true, his class is a joke. Incredibly easy. I learned little to nothing in his class. Random quizzes, most of them you GO OVER before you turn them in. Funny guy, though. Just go to class and find something to occupy yourself until it's over. He does tell random stories. The two speeches you have to present, if you just DO them, you will get A's
Best professor I have had thus far at JMU. He is funny, and quizzes are super easy. Even though we did what felt like nothing in class, I did better on the gcom final than a lot of other kids whose teachers made them do a lot of work throughout the course, and i barely studied. easy grader!
john stone is the cutest thing EVER! i LOVE LOVE LOVED this class. he was amazing and funny and just adorable. and he put up with my sassyness. take john stone for any class he teaches, you wont regret it.
If you get the chance to take this man in any class, don't pass it up. He won SCOM professor of the year this past year, and for good reason. He's amazing, and I kinda wish he was my grandpa. He sort of teaches by just making you get up there and speak, but I can't tell you how much I learned. TAKE HIM!
Awesome! Great Personality. He's like a grandpa =] but funnier because he's not afraid to make jokes that relate to kids our age. my favorite class this semester. He gives quizzes at the end of every other week which you HAVE to read the book for to pass, because he doesn't really talk about quiz material in class all that much. TAKE HIM!
he is so cute! he's like your awesome grandfather. class isn't that hard. most of the assignments are done in class and you can leave when you're done. there are only 2 tests a midterm and a final which are both open notes. i never read the book except during the tests. he grades kinda weird and you are never really sure where your grade came from.
Stone is the man. He is lenient with you, and really wants to learn about the public relations writing process. Tests are not hard, but they are hard to study from because he takes questions from apparently nowhere. Its fine though, he is the man. One of my favorite professors at JMU. Take him if you can.
Such a cute nice man- loves his students, talks about beer and parties and women all the time-- all his exams are electronic, which has been backfiring on the students giving us all bad grades that he can't seem to fix... if he can get the grading under control then definitely take him!
I love Dr. Stone! He really loves teaching and he cares about his students. He is a little forgetful sometimes with the assignments, but if you go to office hours and show him that you did it, he takes care of it and give you a good grade. He's really sweet and is always willing to help, definitely take one of his classes. :)
This man was the most influential teacher that I had in college. Unbelievably positive spirit. I encourage everyone to take his class. The world is a better place with people like Dr. Stone in it.
Stone is awesome. He's very nice and funny. I appreciated his class for what it was, essentially preparing us for the work world. His lectures are a little on the slow side, but he provides everyone with multiple outlets for job interviews and articles to increase our professionalism.
DR. STONE IS THE MOST AMAZING MAN IN THE WORLD. HE IS SOOOOOO SWEET, FUNNY, AND HAS VERY INTERESTING STORIES (HE TELLS ABOUT 100 EVERY CLASS AND THEY DEFINITELY HELP CLASS FLY BY!) HE IS REALLY REALLY INTERESTING AND IS AN AMAZING MAN. CLASS IS EASY, OPEN BOOK MIDTERM AND QUIZZES. GREAT CLASS GREAT MAN TAKE HIM I LOVE HIM!
Dr. Stone is a really sweet guy, and if you're looking for a relatively easy class that flies by, take him. He's funny and tells stories every class. But if you really want to learn the material, you'll have to rely on yourself. Pretty disorganized and may sometimes lose grades, so keep records. Overall, great guy.
Stone is a super sweet teacher. He is really helpful. Was so glad I got to take him before he retired! Will miss him! :(
Literally the best teacher I have ever had. He is so genuine and cares about his students SO much. I have never missed a class because I love him so much. Not hard at all, just do the small assignments he gives you and read. I couldn't say it enough...TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM
I LOVE THIS MAN. he may not teach from the book (you need to read it yourself to do well), but he teaches some amazing life lessons and makes the information relevant. I look forward to his class every other day. This man rocks.
Probably one of the best professors I've had so far, granted I've only been here two semesters. But Dr. Stone is full of many experiences and stories that will seriously change the way you look at life. He's also able to tie the subject matter to relevant things very well. Take GCOM with Dr. Stone, you won't regret it!!
Dr. Stone is so incredibly inspirational and an amazing teacher all around. The life lessons he will teach you are incredible. Plus he genuinely cares for each and every kid in his classes. TAKE HIM!
Oh my gosh. Dr. Stone is an incredible man. He cares so much and is seriously the nicest guy I have ever met. He's practically an angel. Hilarious and full of personal stories that make you laugh pretty much the whole time. The class is easy and fun, but the tests weren't necessarily easy. Take him. He is awesome.
Stone is awesome. Super nice guy who has the biggest heart and cares for his students success. Not always clear on what he wants his grading, but assignments are easy and if you try you'll get an A no problem. Tons of grades, so there's not a lot of stress on one or two things in particular. Take him!!
Stone is a very funny and nice old man. He doesn't really teach in lecture its more like he gives his life story every time which isn't bad until the tests come which are right out of the textbook that no one was told to read. Tests are pretty hard and he is confusing.
Dr. Stone... where do you begin? Go to every class. Respect his rules. Get an A. It's pretty simple. Don't dare take out your phone and always be friendly. Listen to his gibberish, lookup study tools on Quizlet for his open book tests and you'll be fine. Might be slightly screwed for the final though. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Incredible man, talks a lot, very helpful. Go to class and get an A. Easygoing old guy, hardly any work, a couple speeches and open book exams. Highly recommend.
Dr. Stone is a great professor. Definitely read the chapters because although you don't do too much with them during the semester, they are on the final exam. Only had one group presentation the whole semester and it was fairly easy.
TAKE STONE! He's the sweetest man and is an easy grader. Only one big group presentation the entire semester, the rest of the time was spent on lectures and class activities. Very little homework. He'll talk your ear off but will give you clear answers and feedback. Attendance is mandatory- just show up and you'll get an A!
if you just want to get by this Gen Ed with an A then TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! John Stone is an incredibly easy and interesting teacher that lets you do whatever you want in class. You can sleep, eat, get up and move around, anything. Tests are open notes or in groups and there's only one group project in the entire class.
Professor Stone is so sweet and truly loves teaching. He has a great personality and the tests/presentations are easy. Beware if you do not show up to class he will not allow you to participate in certain things and you will get a fat 0 for it. Also, read the textbook on your own or else you will be screwed for the final which is standardized!!!
SUCH A CUTE OLD MAN!!! He is so adorable & he's got jokes. Didn't really learn too much about the course in his class but he made it enjoyable and we were able to pass with ease.
Prof. Stone is the GOAT. His class consists of hilarious lectures and relatively easy group projects. His tests are open book and are pretty straightforward. Be sure to read the textbook for the final tho!! My favorite class of the semester no doubt. Take this class for an easy A as long as you attend his class.
John Stone is AMAZING! Take him! There are 2 tests, the first open note and the second is a group test. He is so personable and I love him! He gives lots of grades so your grade isn't heavily weighted by one thing (I did bad on both test and still did good). Not many presentations and overall he is hilarious! DONT TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Dr. Stone is the sweetest. I loved this class and it was a pretty easy A. Attendance isn't mandatory but you can't make up the work without a valid excuse for missing. You really don't use the textbook but 1 of your tests will be open book so you should rent it for that. Only 2 tests (1 open book & 1 group) and a final. Only 2 (easy) group projects
Professor Stone is a great professor and I loved this class. He genuinely cares about all of his students and the class work is mostly in class assignments. I would recommend anyone to take this class and his lectures are hilarious, he kept me awake in an 8am and that speaks volumes.
The sweetest and most caring professor I've had at JMU. Extremely sharp given his age and has hundreds of amazing stories to tell. Gets off topic but still gets his point across so I don't mind. Willing to work with anyone, easy grader, just wants you to learn and enjoy the class
He will definitely be different than your other professors. Taking his class is an experience. However, if you want to succeed in this class you have to play by his rules or it will be dreadful. Don't look at your phone, talk to him, come to class every time, and just be engaged during class. If you want higher than a B you have to read and do this
Professor Stone has a great and funny personality but do not be fooled by the reviews given. Professor Stone is a harsh grader and will harshly grade assignments that most professors would give full credit for. Although there's only two test one that is an open note and one that is a group test, both tests were still hard.
He can sometimes go off topic and the tests are hard but he really cares about his students. I only had a 15-minute break before his class around lunchtime so I would always get food at the vending machines because I didn't have time to get real food, until one day he told me he rather I go get food, bring it to class to eat, and just be late.
at the beginning of the semester he claimed this would be an easy A, which was so far from the truth. he grades assignments unnecessarily hard, and you never know what he's looking for. everything about the grading and assignments is confusing. would not recommend.
Professor Stone is a sweet man who cares about his students, but he spent more time talking about his life than actually teaching. We didn't do much work until the last few weeks when we had a group project, but the hard part was the tests because nobody knew the material and we did poorly even though they were open notes/group tests
Dr. Stone is not good. He does not even lecture he just sits, tells you random facts and stories and then makes up weird questions for the tests. Our entire class failed an open note/book test. He's also very bad about informing the class on anything that is needed for the university like the SONA participation. I would take anyone else if you can.
At the beginning of the semester Stone was friendly and said his class was an easy A with effort. Later on he became angry that his class was getting the reputation of being an easy A and began to grade things in a very confusing way and it became almost impossible to get an A. He is friendly when he wants to be but take someone else if possible.
He started off good. His lecture became more about his life stories. He then tested us and the highest grade was an 80. Not good for the fact it was open book. The second test was group, it was awful. His grading criteria was not clear at all. He also did not prepare us for the final in any way. The study guide didnt even help. Not recommended
The assignments and handouts seem easy, but he grades them harshly and is not clear as to why. How much he likes you also influences your grades. He does not prepare you for tests or the final. It seemed like an easy A at the beginning, but by the end, it was impossible to get an A on even simple assignments.
JOHN STONE IS THE GOAT!! Awesome class and awesome guy. You'll never meet someone with more stories or more experience. Truly one of the greatest people I've had the pleasure of meeting at JMU
You will give a speech and he will immediately critique it in front of the entire class. It's awkward to give your speech and then him point out "for the next people" everything you did wrong. He also goes on tangents and tells infinite stories that are off topic.
I love Dr. Stone. He is a very patient guy in the sense that he will let you resubmit some assignments multiple times in order to get full credit. He says "No question is a bad question" and he means it, you can ask him anything and he never makes you feel dumb or guilty about it. Hes also a very sweet man and just overall great! Take him :)
Professor Stone is an amazing and passionate professor who sincerely cares for his work and his students. This class was completely online for me (Fall 2020) and he had trouble with the technological aspect of this class since it was entirely on zoom. Otherwise, he had great lectures (although sometimes hard to listen to) and appreciates hard work!
Insults students, if you want to be pointed out sit in the front. Doesn't teach what the department wants to you have to study everything brand new for the final. Tests are not similar to what we do in class. Get ready to hear his life story every single day. Avoid at all costs.
Prof Stone is a good guy, you will hear about his life a lot, but he isn't clear on what is required for class, and he says his exams are super easy but the highest grade in the class was an 80. The lectures are boring, and he picks on certain people especially those in the front. You feel as if you aren't learning anything, and aren't prepared.
For a class about communication, John does not communicate well with students. He doesn't keep track of what is due when. For the final exam, he said multiple times we do NOT need to know anything about public speaking. Turns out there were a ton of public speaking questions on the exam.
Nice guy, but his lectures often go off topic and he spends more time discussing his personal life than actual course content. Felt like I learned very little from this class and felt extremely underprepared for tests/projects. He also consistently deviated from the posted class schedule in the syllabus without warning.
Professor Stone does talk a lot about his personal life but it all connects to his lecture because he has taught in so many different countries. He is a really cool guy who cares about everyone, and shows it too. I had him over zoom and even though he didn't really know how to work zoom, he made everything work for us.
1. Dr. Stone takes up to 3 days minimum to respond to emails. He says he responds quick, but this is a complete lie. 2. Dr. Stone will mess up your grade if you do not stay on top of him. You will most likely have to go to office hours every week just to remind him to put in a grade for you or change one.
Overall, John is pretty nice. In his lectures, he usually just talks about his life, which doesn't always correlate to what we're supposed to be learning. He is never really clear on what exactly is required for his class and I never felt prepared for any exam.
Such an easy grader the only reason I got a B was because I missed a few assignments. I got an A on everything I do. He's so funny I really enjoyed his class. I am so sad he's retiring
Professor Stone is the best professor I've ever had. The first exam's average was low so he let us decide as a class how we wanted to move forward. He ended up curving the first exam and creating a study guide for the next exam which he made on short notice. As long as you go to class and complete the in class assignments you will pass.
