He is great! He's funny and very down to earth! He gives you the sense of being in your comfort zone! I recommend him for anyone wanting to take English 102! His papers don't have deadlines! You can revise any paper you write for class!
He is a fantastic professor. I would recommend him to anyone. He's funny and teaches very well. He argued for me to pass the final. One of the best in the English department. My only complaint is that he isnt a Yankee fan, but otherwise he's excellen
good teacher, he doesn't have deadlines, but he tries too much. He always tries to make you a better writer. He assigns too many assignments. And for someone like me who is trying to pass with minimal work, its bad. He always wants to help though.
I had him for Eng 102 workshop, dude is one of the most generous and noble teacher here. The head of the dept almost failed me over one sentence and this guy fought for me. Much Appreciated Prof. Straus. Take him if you get the chance
He is a great professor...and very helpful.....I recommend him for english...there is no big research paper assigned like in other english classes and papers can be revised as many times as you want!!!!!!
he is a very good professor and is very helpful
encourages students to write. he brings in speakers to motivate students to write. he's is always willing to help students and you can revise your papers as much as you can.
Yeah he's VERY helpful, and allows u to rewrite as many times as you want but that doesn't matter if you have a diffrnt paper EVERY week that is always 3-5 pages. And he ADMits he's very HArd grader, most of the papers he hands back will be a C, since he says u must be truly exceptional for an A,if you wnt 2 get by take him, but you wont get an A
Cool teacher there was no grade in our class but seesm as though he grades tough but is more interestin than many other english teachers
excellent teacher, very helpful. You wont get an A though, hes a very hard grader, but still very easy!
Cool guy. You can rewrite as much as you want. He motivates students and he's someone you can joke around with. He's a little bit corny but he knows that, and sometimes it's just funny to laugh at how pathetic his jokes are and it's fine.
Very helpful and fair. Honest concern for the students learning ability. Just have to survive his constant musical references(he's a drummer) and his unique sense of humor.
The teacher I had got fired near the end because she was HORRIBLE, and Straus came in to replace her for the last few classes. My only regret is not having chosen him to begin with. Straus has his priorities and if you listen to what he says and take it to heart, it can only help you. He gives a lot of chances and lets you revise your papers.
Good professor. Is helpful to students and allows his essays to be rewritten for a higher grade. Only negatives are that he is a hard grader and he assigns a new essay almost every week.
Mild work lets u rewrite evrything... Just do it, he's the best you can get.
Easy going and funny guy but a tough grader. Even if you rewrite he's still a tough grader. Thinks he's the perfect writer and will not give you a break. I regret taking him.
He's an easy going guy. He always relates his lessons to drums. (BTW..He's also a professional drummer). He lets you re-write everything, but thats probably because he is a really tough grader. Besides that he is an understanding & cool Professor.
HE IS THE BEST ENG PROF EVER. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF AN EXTRA CREDIT AT THE END :D. HE CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. AND HIS BOOK COSTS 12 DOLLARS. ENOUGH SAID TAKE HIM. AND U WILL REWRITE UR ESSAY TILL U GET AN A.
He may be a demanding grader but maybe that's why he isn't teaching middle school. He'll be more than happy to help you with your writing. You certainly can earn A in his class.
Great prof because he takes an interest. He "helped me become a better writer" (that's his mission) and he communicates well even though sometimes too well. Tough grader but just FOLLOW his comments when you revise your papers and he'll give you a better grade. quizzes are not that important but just do the readings he assigned
Really hard grader even after you revise it. If you have a lot of time and like writing then you should take him. If not, I advise you to stay away! Besides the amount of writing he assign and being a hard grader he is really helpful.
Good Professor. You can rewrite papers as many times as you want, and there is basically no due date for any papers he said if you want you can hand them all in last day of class. His very lenient with papers, and his not too hard of a grader. Extremely helpful and very nice. I suck at English but i did well in his class. I would recommend him.
Oh my god. I don't know what these people are talking about. He is not a hard grader. I got a C in English Comp 101 and now I am passing with flying colors. There was an in class essay that I had NO idea about and somehow i managed to get an A. First day of class Straus walks in and made fun of these comments because they are not true!!!
Okay honestly if you are not an English Major do not take him! Do not listen to your friends or other people from his class and take him. He will not give you the marks that you deserve. He picks the best essay from the class without even reading all. Really now? He is funny and he is a nice person. Do not take him! You can get the grades you desrv
Not such a good professor like people tend to say. Hard grader, lots of papers due. Does give option to re-write, but will not give an A out.
Professor Straus is a nice person and funny, but as far as a English Comp teacher, he is not as easy as most people think and say. Yes, you can re-write your papers, but he grades them even harder. He gives surprise quizzes, usually vocabulary words in readings as well as 5-7 papers throughout the semester; including one regarding a guest speaker.
Do not take him! Such a hard grader! Must attend class even though its useless and boring! Say corny jokes and has an obession with Kelly Clarkson. To top it off, gives quizzes on readings and the vocabulary in the assigned readings. Everyone always does bad. If you are not an English major, do not take him. You're paper will never be good enough.
First time Professor at NJIT. Does not fit the stereotypical model of what an NJIT Professor acts like. He truly attempts to show you that writing is not about just finishing an assignment, but to passionately write about a topic and give your insight. The amount of passion he has towards seeing students succeed in writing is inexplicable. A+
Horrible professor. Obsessed with Lady Gaga and her song Bad Romance. Does not teach well. Really hard class. Simply do not take him. You will not do good. He is so also obseesed with the movie Blind Side.
Really cool guy. Knows what he is talking about and encourages learning...if you wanna learn something take him. 100% recommended
Hard grader, great guy. Really passionate with essay grading, which can get really annoying. But if you try hard, you should do fine. Believes we hold the key to great righting, and stress learning through reading. Also in love with word sound. PS, don't write anything bad about him, he goes on this site.
awesome guy! you'll learn alot from him. he lets u revise your papers anytime, even exam papers! definitely recommend him!
He's a TOUGH grader. Impossible to please him. Too many freaking papers throughout the semester - over the DUMBEST topics EVER.
nice guy but impossible to please. expects us to write like an author. all his papers revolve around music. SO BORING
it was an okay class. you can pass it because he allows you to turn in papers again for a better grade throughout the semester--even if it's last minute. plus he tries to relate to his students to make the class more interesting. if you have to miss a class he'll help you catch up, but don't be fooled... he counts absences. i almost failed from em.
jeff foxworthy, luigi, monopoly, caterpillar looking obsessed with kelly clarkson neanderthal degenerate. he spends the whole class talking about authors that he emails that dont care about what he says. his sample paper grading lacks clarity. dogmatist looking as
Ok so disregard all the bad reviews and rude comments these people obviously have some type of personal vendetta against him. He's a fair grader. He has an odd sense of humor be prepared but other than that he's very helpful and easy to work with. Passionate about writing and teaching. And u can rewrite your papers
Straus is the best. You are allowed to rewrite all your essays for a better grade as many times as you like. use that to your advantage people. don't complain if you get a bad grade, just rewrite it! the topics you have to write about can be strange but they are pretty straightforward. attendance is mandatory as well
Professer Straus is awesome for writing 102. He lets you rewrite all your papers as many times as you want. Hes funny (although sometimes he makes odd jokes), lenient, and an overall good person. He wants to help you pass.
He is the man!!! Most down to earth english professor, understands that not everyone can write like shakespear and appreciates the concept of bad first drafts, allowing you to rewrite any assignment including midterm for a better grade. He only cares for improvement in students. Funny guy too. Better than the other EngComp professors.
Couldn't ask for a better professor. Fun. Caring. Genuinely cares about your learning beyond English class, but in life. Helps you unlearn the nonsense other dee-da-dee English teachers have taught you. Great person. Great teacher. Highly recommend.
He is there for you and genuinely wants to help you become a better writer. He gives very meaningful advice that can be applied in real life. Hilarious and weird (good type of weird). Take him! Don't believe the other negative responses. An A is achievable so as long as you TRY!!!
He is so understanding and caring. Great and funny guy!! Deff take him if you have the chance. An A is hard to achieve BUT he lets you redo every assignment. He cares about his students and that's what's great about him. He takes time to learn your name and really get to know you. Attendance counts too. definitely take him! Got a B+
He is a very funny guy! He lets you revise every single paper you do and wants you to learn. His class is very interesting and fun, you never know what to expect from him. He is optimistic and like I said he truly wants you to not only get a good grade and pass his class but actually learn! Would take it again! For sure.
Looks like he was pulled out of the movies meet the millers. He is hilarious. Nicest teacher I've had at Rutgers so far. Super blunt teacher LISTEN to what he says and you'll get an A. Throw away everything you thought you knew about English and really listen to him and you will get an A. I HATEDEnglish before meeting him. He was great! I recommend
Really cool guy who sees potential in everyone. Makes you think outside the box instead of following strict writing rules (like other English Comp professors). Don't be fooled though, get your work done, lot's of papers and due dates. Watch out for them. He lets you rewrite papers if you do not like your grade. Take him.
Absolutely loved this class! He got us to think and approach writing in a completely different way. He gives really good feedback on all your essays and you're able to rewrite them for a better grade. READ HIS FEEDBACK WHEN REWRITING YOUR PAPER!! It will help get a way better grade. I recommend this professor!
solid professor grades a little tough but you have opportunities to rewrite the paper as many times as you please. definitely recommend this professor, sense of humor, outside the box thinker, makes you want to write well.
Tough grader! Will call you out even though he knows you don't know the answer! His grading is unclear
Pop quizzes, picks the smallest grammer mistakes! No matter how much you try you will not get a good grade and what annoys me was how he always called me out.
Worset teacher on earth! He needs to stop calling us out! His in class essays are extremely hard! Don't take him
Don't recommend very tough! All these nice comments are probably written by him. Pop quizzes
Made my freshmen year a nightmare! If you love yourself, don't take his class.
THIS IS LITERALLY THE WORST PROF EVER!! I thought he was a stern fair grader at the beginning and I shouldn't drop his class cause it seemed fair. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE! DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Pop quizzes are the most annoying! His grading system is bad too
He's a cool professor. His lectures are boring and he constantly made dad jokes but He genuinely cares about his students. Also. he's clear as to what he expects on your papers. Gives you an opportunity to redo your papers to get that A. if you do not take those opportunities, then that's your own fault. take him for an easy A.
He is a fair minded person but at times he deviates from the topic. He is a tough grader but allows you to rewrite your papers (beware you might have to repeat like 4 or 5x). He can be too political.
He tells too many dad jokes and spends too much time avoiding the topics at hand. On all the essays he leaves little to no comments to help you improve, and will just hand back a low grade with no explanation on how to change/improve it. He is too political and often goes off on tangents about our current political administration with no regard.
I loved Professor Straus. He isn't like most English professors, he shows you how to actually write like an effective adult. He knows what he's talking about, his wife works for the NY Times and he uses the same textbook Harvard uses for Eng101 (don't worry it's only 100 pgs and is an easy read). With Straus teaching, my writing grew so much.
Doesn't give clear directions but overall an awesome man
Thought this professor would be nice but it seems not. I am taking him my freshman year for English 102 and dislike this class so much. Never gives clear directions to write your papers just tells you to do this and that. Lowersrewriting your papers to 2, wow. Really wished I took a different professor, spends most of class saying same boring jokes
Took away any creativity in writing. I came out of English 101 strong, and came to this class completely disappointed. The prompts are so dry and extremely hard to write even more than a paragraph.
Funny how most of the bad reviews seem to be coming from the same person. Vengeful much? Prof. Straus is caring, funny, and a very fair grader. The only professor at Rutgers that lets you rewrite papers. He does make corny jokes but that is what makes him funny! If you don't put in the work how do you expect to do well? Help Dr. Straus help you!
HORRIBLE! ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! If you think you know English well, think again!
He cares a lot about his students and improving their writing. He was a tough but reasonable grader. I had to get used to what he looked for in writing because his directions for essays are vague. He is a very good professor and I'd definitely recommend him, even though his lectures can sometimes drag.
Nice guy. 8 papers in one semester. Makes you rewrite almost every paper in order to get a decent grade. Class shouldn't be so demanding but it is so don't expect it be easy. Makes you stop writing the way you've learned to write and makes you write the way he likes it. Overall, it isn't terrible but it isn't great either.
Very easy going, He seemed like a great professor in the beginning. He gives you feedback then makes you rewrite essays over and over again. You think you wrote what he wanted based on conversations and feedbacks. But He grades accordingly to his feelings. One day he says one thing the next he contradicts his previous feedback.
The definition of a tough grader! He is a great teacher regarding time, accessibility, and jokes. He is an awesome person - don't get me wrong. He's really nice and truly respects people. However, getting an A seems impossible. If you're an English or Humanities major take him, he'll sharpen you. Otherwise, it's eh and he's a tough grader.
He's a great guy and very sweet but sometimes unclear on what he wants in the papers. He just gives a prompt but doesnt necessarily explain how he wants the paper to be structured or anything. He acts as if he doesnt follow the english writing rules but for surely does. I dont know how to feel about the class
Professor Straus is great, he cares about his students and gives great feedback on papers. He gives readings that help you become a better writer.
Professor Straus is such a good English teacher! He is very caring and understanding, especially with this whole pandemic going on. All you need to do is attend his class and write his papers, most of his papers are explained during class.
Best first-year professor, take him if you have the chance! Even though I barely made it to class, he always was very helpful and gives you a different perspective on English.
Before taking this class I dreaded English. Writing a paper would stress me out. But Prof. Straus never put pressure on us. He encouraged us to write authentically not like a robot as other teachers. He was mindful of our circumstances. I couldn't ask for a better professor. Even though I passed I want to take him again.
Easy A. Best professor ever! Doesn't punish you for writing in your style, is flexible with due dates, cares for you and your grade. I dropped this course twice yet i took it with him in summer and didn't feel the work load. Goes over sample/student essays so u know what to do. Let's you rewrite. Highly recommended.
great teacher, taking him again for 102, flexible with dates, lets you rewrite papers, loves to meet with students, and genuinely cares about you becoming a better writer. Not your normal grader, one essay a week, and you'll learn he's an interesting guy...
Professor Straus is so understanding and kind! He helps you become more confident in your writing. Taking him for 102!
Although he's nice and understanding about certain things, there's a specific way that he prefers his students to write and if you don't write that way, he will give you a low grade on your papers. He lets you rewrite papers and is flexible on due dates, but if you don't write in the "general english style," don't expect a high grade.
Professor Straus is very chill and laid back. He is very understanding and caring, so just talk to him!! His lectures do drag on (and he very rarely lets you leave early), but his lectures are very informative. He also lets you revise any paper. Take him immediately!!
Amazing, Understanding, Caring, Passionate, Determined, and most importantly inspiring teacher. He tries his best to get students interested in the topic and is always there to help no matter what. If you want to pass, the only thing you have to do is write the paper the way he wants you to, and it's not hard.
One thing to know about Prof Straus is that he means well. His goal is to have everyone relieve their stress and become good writers. His lectures can be ok, but sometimes he does go off track and it can be boring. His comments after an essay are very helpful and honest. He really strives to make us better at writing. Be aware of reading a lot.
Professor Straus is great teacher. Very flexible with due dates, understanding and supportive. He allows you to rewrite your papers as many times as you need for a better grade. Be warned though, you have to write in a specific way to pass. If you can adapt you'll be fine. His prompts are vague but overall it was great class. Would take again.
Awesome professional. Loved him.. Recommend highly
Straus is a great professor. He lets you revise essays as much as you want and gives good feedback. An interesting person that can wander off in conversation. His style of writing is very different than what you expect. He accepts late work until the end of the semester, but please do not wait until the last day to turn in.
Really funny and a great professor to talk too. I recommend taking him if you get the chance. He doesn't have a late policy, but I suggest you do your papers when he asks you too. It's mutual respect for one another.
Accepts late assignments. Self-proclaimed villain. Attempts at humor. Encourages mildly for active participation. A safe environment to express and converse opinions. Educating effectively and contrary to traditional writing classes. Be ready to hear his voice and repeat pieces of advice a lot. Relieves our stress and improves our writing skills.
He was an extremely great professor, cares about his students, gives good feedback on essays. He goes by the curriculum, but is very lenient and allows as many rewrites to get a better grade. His in class work was simple and worked with the class, nothing too excruciating, very bearable work. He jokes and talks to students like actual people.
prof straus is really a great professor, he actually cares about you, he actually wants to help improve your writing and he lets you turn in papers pretty much whenever. However, he doesnt go by the normal standards which isnt always a good thing. He wants you to write in a specific way which is the opposite of what we are used to. overall decent
he allows you to rewrite all papers and everything is due at the end of the semester i think this professor is great. he grades work differently, but it is only cause he cares about learning how to write not just get a good grade. Even someone that is not good at English will pass his class if he sees that you are making effort, and class is fun
An amazingly awesome professor. He lets you revise your essay as many times as you need to. no definite deadlines. He encourages you to write like you're having a conversation with someone. Pretty funny guy, and he cares for his student. If he taught 102, I would take his class again without a doubt.
Professor Straus is a great professor. He doesn't count such things as late assignments or really care if you are late to class. He works around your times and is very accommodating. I thought this was going to be another boring English class, but Professor Straus made it fun and engaging. I would definitely recommend this teacher again.
