It's an easy class if you show up because the quizzes are based on his discussions in class. 4 essays, 1000 words each. A lot of reading. However, he is very boring. I personally enjoyed the book on Roman History better than his lectures. Easy Final.
Incredibly easy professor. Go to class for lectures and you've got an A. His curve is 80% = A; which is pretty darn easy. One paper, midterm, final and LOTS of quizzes. Don't even need to read the book (really).
BIG curve, so makes the class easy to pass or do well in. Unless you are really interested in the fine points of Greek Myth, you will find this class extremely boring. So overall, semi-easy, but very boring. Instructor knows his material though!
Interesting professor. He helped me on my papers. Boring, I fell asleep, but I got a B thank god, but he knew I was trying really hard though. Ten page papers was ridiculous about Alexander the Great. But oh well
OH GOD, HES SO BORING, HE TAKES UP THE WHOLE PERIOD TALKING & TALKING ABOUT HIS GREEK OBSESSION.. ABOUT 5-10 PEOPLE WOULD ACTUALLY SHOW UP TO A 40 PEOPLE CLASS. EASY QUIZZES EVERY OTHER WEEK, 2 PAPERS & FINAL. OFFERS EXTRA CREDIT.. BUT I WARN YOU, DONT BS ON ANYTHING YOU WRITE, HE KNOWS EVERYTHING!!
dude, he's such a frikken weirdo. but he's pretty cool. if you know greek myth from high school, this class is really easy. easy quizzes & semi-easy test.
This class was easy, but alot of heavy reading an writing. His quizzes and tests were simple and easy.
This class was super easy but very very boring ---He talks the whole time. There is a lot of reading, which i didnt do but still managed to pass the class and a lot of essays too. His quizzes are easy 5 questions max. Just take good notes and its true dont bull!@#$ on the essay he does know everything!!
Very informative, and understanding. Willing to help. His note giving skills are less than perfect, but his testa and quizes are nothing to worry about. Dont even have to do all the readings, just pay attention
This class was really boring. You dont need to read as long as you show up for class and take good notes. If you have a class right after it'll be hard to make it because he likes to take the whole class lecturing.
He's a weird dude, definately. Classes do take forever as he lectures all day everyday, the routine never changes. 2 research papers, 4-6 question quizzes every other week, and a final is the class. Easy at times, but hard at times too. Final exam is ridiculously hard. Was interested in this subject, not anymore!
Very good at what he does, his quizzes, final exam, and research paper were very easy. I would recommend this professor, even though he could be very boring!!!!!!
Very good at what he does, one of a kind. The only downfall is that he keeps you the whole time, but you do get breaks. Very interesting.
Professor Sugars knows a lot about what he is talking about and makes the lectures very interesting. Gives quizzes as class is ending, so you have to rush. There is a lot of reading, but that is to be expected of a greek mythology class. the quizzes are very reasonable if you pay attention during class. the final was easy if you do the guide.
A really nice guy, very funny. Always willing to answer any and all questions. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Material is sometimes hard to follow. 4 books and 2 reading packets. Go to class, he explains everything.
Dr. Sugars is very laid back. When he hands back papers, he estimates the scale off the top of his head. His grades have a 30 pt. gap per grade. Do not buy the books until you get lost in the lectures. His tests are completely on the lectures.
Not the best professor out there. He's kind of all over the place when he lectures and doesn't follow the syllabus or the assigned readings. We went through 1/3 of the semester before he even looked at the syllabus to see where we were supposed to be. He talks to much and gets sidetracked a lot!
He drove me nuts cuz he LOVED to hear himself talk. Barely answered students questions directly & if he did it always in a round about way. Took him for summer, but after 2-3 wks I was so annoyed, I had to drop. He didn't even introduce himself 'til the 4th class. Doesn't follow syllabus, jumps around, always off on tangent & way too overdramatic

Okay if your looking for an easy grade this is the class for you. Like im a 3.5 grade student and thought thsi class was beyond easy. Seriously, when i was tired i slept when he talked about war issue i listen and when i felt like it i read the books. As for his grading it is more then generous and u only have to pay attention to get an A
This teacher is nuts. When he talks its likenap time,he fills the board up with random things, ooh yeah copy them down, cause you dont know what he will use on the finial or on the pop quizes. He makes you do 4 essays random quises and a finial Get A's on the essays and your clear for the class. very boring teach but go to class get a C or better.
Not bad when it came to lectures. I didn't fall asleep, but it was difficult to take notes because he wasn't going in order - he would randomly through out names and info. His essays were graded pretty easy. His final study guide was a joke though. It looked like a child through words onto a page. Overall not too hard, I barely went and got a B.
Sugars is not a good teacher in my opinion. He is always late to class, or he starts class late (ie 15 minutes) even if he is there. He loves to hear himself talk so he holds class late and pauses for dramative effect. His lectures are random and off syllabus. In short I don't respect him as a teacher and so I couldn't learn anything from him.
Professor Sugars is such an eccentric, funny guy. He knows a lot about the subject and is well prepared for class each day. The problem is that the reading he assigns jumps all over the book, and he keeps the class until the very last second or he keeps us after. The lectures are sometimes interesting. He's a great teacher.
Very nice class... Just boring after awhile cause just notes and listening him talk... Better take class later in the day not an 8am class like I did.. Not too hard though but hard to keep attendance after boredom kicks in. Must like classics and interested to fully get that easy A.
He is too into hearing himself talk and he uses way too many latin words for a culture class
I did not like him AT ALL!! I felt like the subject could have been really fun to learn about but he makes it so boring. His lectures are not structured and he rambles on using latin and greek words that no one understands. Honestly, if you can take another teacher.
he talks quite fast. especially with all the latin words, it can be confusing. he jumps all over the book and ignores syllabus. books are kinda helpful for essays. he is lenient on due dates. he knows a lot about his subject so don't try to bs him. nice guy.
He is a pretty cool teacher. Very geeky but brings in the geeky humur ie. Star Wars. If you ever watch the simpsons his voice and personality is like the comic book guy. He is not really that boring but if you take him arly enough in the day he can put you to sleep. I recommend taking him at night or during the day.
This guy is incredibly confusing. He goes all over the place and the study guide for the final was 14 pages long, packed with inane facts we did not adequately cover in class. The book is interesting, but it just doesn't save the class. I felt entirely unprepared for the final.
Take this class ONLY if u have an interest in subject. EXTREMELY disorganized, rambles on, no lesson plan, does not stick with schedule on syllabus. Grading scale is out of whack! Sounds like Fink from Simpsons. Study guide: 14 pgs. WHY?! It doesn't even help! Some stuff on finals not even covered!
Very easy if you attend class. He gives so much easy extra credit its hard not to get an A in the class. Final was extremely easy. He has quizes every 2-3 weeks, which he tells you ahead of time, based on things he talked about in class. If you listen, the class will be easy.
Did not like this class! It was nothing that i thought it would be. he is so disorganized and jumps around hard to follow. He curves everything but still the class is not worth taking
VERY QUIRKY! I loved going to his class cause he's always entertaining. If you just sort of pay attention in class and take some notes, you'll do fine. Offers an array of extra credits... Quiz every 2 weeksish and the final was very easy. Tends to be in his little world sometimes but is always interested in what you have to say.
this class sucks... i hate it and am failing miserably... weird guy... not so much fun... i cant show up half the time because i have no clue what is going on and it is at nine am... do not take it.
he is definetly one of a kind. his 5 question tests are super easy but the final is rediculous. he gives a a 17pg study guide with over 200 questions you have to look up in the book and tests you on 40. none of his lectures or previous test have anything to do with the final. one paper thats easy. if you can take some one else
First of all dont buy any of the books you dont need them!! All u have to do is pay attention to his lectures, he gives u two essays n he grades them easily, I thought I did horrible in the final but i still passed with an A. I recommend him :) class can be interesting at times
Its basically like sitting in a 2hr 45min movie. The way he teaches his stories is fun and interesting. Should attend every class and take good notes for the quizzes. Quizzes are extremely curved and easy. 5pts for writing your name. 12 page study guide for final but it helps. one paper but is easily graded. take with a freind <3
Sugars is pretty funny. He does not leave hw, which is cool. You are require to read some chapter books. Overall the class is easy but boring most of the time.
Lectures can be interesting. Doesn't always notice when people have questions, but when he does he answers in detail. Sometimes goes off in tangents but overall if you read the book or attend class, it's enough. quiz every week. Easy.
He is a very sweet man. Lectures every single day. Short quiz's every once in a while, but must attend class to pass them. Most student's do not appreciate him and are disrespectful, but he is very helpful and always willing to help his students understand and pass. Loved his class, learned quite a bit. Great Professor, good class.
Sugars has an odd way of doing things. He lectures the whole time and it is very dry and boring (no power points or anything). He is also very unorganized and will jump around to different myths. There is a quiz about every 2 weeks and they are not easy but he curves them tremendously. There is also 1 paper and a final and those are curved as well.
Very nice man but incredibly boring. Attendance is not essential to do well. Go for the quizzes though. There are about 5 worth 50-70 points each throughout the semester. The final was kind of random but not too bad if you do the study guide. One essay of your choice on anything to do with greek mythology.
Very chill teacher. Can talk about pagan culture FOREVER in class, mouth is just rolling lol, but can be tangent at times. Quizzes every other wk and four 4pg essays, which are very fair because he really lowers the grading scale on them so you actually do well on them. Okay prof you can say. Taking him now, spring2010.
Attend class, listen, and guess your hardest on the quizzes and you'll do just fine. I rarely took notes, never opened the books, and managed an A. Let's see...he doesn't take attendance, there are quizzes every 2 weeks or so, a 3-4 pg essay, and a final. He curves.
He rambles through out class. doesnt use any helpful organization techniques like a powerpoint. He knows a lot about the subject but is so scattered it can give you a headache. 14 page study. DONT take him unless you love the subject. There are far easier capstones.
This class is very easy. All he does is tell the stories of greek mythology for the whole class period. There are a few quizes a short term paper and a final, those are the only graded assignments throughout the semester. I wouldnt recommend buying the text book though i only used it once and could have saved the money
GREAT TEACHER! interesting lectures, if you get bored easily, just take some notes throughout the class to stay away, but I've never been bored in this class. quizzes every 3 weeks, very easy. one essay on ANYTHING on the subject. and a final. curves. very nice guy and knows a lot on the subject. TAKE HIM!! (:
Book not necessary, quiz about every two weeks. 10 pts for name! Pretty boring class though. He rambles and will not dismiss u early ever. The final was ridiculously hard. Gives a 20 page study guide, so START ON IT IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER! One paper on anything, never took attendence, I got a B in the class, learned a bit as well
He lectures every single class so if you miss, you need to get the notes from someone. Doesn't believe in tests so he has quizzes every few weeks that are straight from the lectures. The final was easy and there was 1 term paper that was also easy. Just take notes and you'll get an A.
If you simply read the weekly readings and attend class, you'll do just fine. I wrote my term paper on Harry Potter! I found the class very interesting and comical! :)
you either have to go to class every day and pay attention to the lectures of just read the textbook. No need for both. I would choose going to the class, though. He is really entertaining and really passionate about greek mythology. Makes it easy to want to learn. I felt like it was story time twice a week for an hour. I really enjoyed this class.
i LOVED this class. it was such a nice break from my other courses. he REALLY knows his stuff and it felt like story time twice a week. take him!! show up to class, relax, and just listen and you will get an A!! grade based on [easy] short quizzes about things he emphasized in lecture and one paper bc he doesnt believe in exams. TAKE HIM!!
Very knowledgeable & passionate about Greek myths. Lectures without notes all class, fascinating that he knows so much. Quizzes based on lectures every few weeks & one 4 page paper on pretty much anything relating to greek myth. wrote on mine on harry potter. 1 final, good class, take notes.
Sugars, sucks overall. He is fully knowledgeable on the subject of greek myth but he digresses A LOT! It's really difficult to take notes because he's never focused and the class seems to drag on. I suggest you guys take Laura Hunter. I now regret not taking her class...
Loved him. Witty and funny. Incredibly informed about his subject. Go to class and take really good notes or read the book
Real good teacher, he is not boring at all. The stories about Greek Mythology are good. The quizzes are easy, I recommend that you go to all of the classes because the notes are the quiz basically. The paper is easy, it is on anything you want that relates to Greek Mythology. I highly recommend taking this class, I would take it again lol
Sugars is obviously passionate about the subject he teaches. He knows so much! However, he is not very well organized when it comes to presenting the information. He jumps from one thing to another and I personally found it difficult to take notes because I didn't know what was important and what was a trailed off story.
I like Greek Mythology so i thought i would like this class its ok but boring. He lectures the entire time, so you have to be fast at taking notes, he talks about different stories. he has readings assigned each week, its alot i personally think, i never read the books, no homework, he has a few quizes 4 -5 ques. 1 final mutiple choice, 1 paper.
This class fairly simple but really boring. Overall i cant complain though because after a semester of falling asleep and missing class as well as not doing any of the reading after week two I was able to get a C. Seriously though I thought I was gonna have to retake this class. Didn't even study for the final.
go to class and take notes or read the book. you really don't use the book at all. attendance isn't mandatory. quizzes every other week or so, 1 essay on anything you want, and 1 final. start the studyguide EARLY or you'll regret it when finals come around. bring a laptop cause he talks pretty fast and sporatic. one of my favorite class. TAKE IT
Quizzes are real easy, he curbs them all. One paper but its not much. Easy class and all but you gotta pay attention and take good notes cuz his lectures are disorganized and all over the place. Very friendly and helpful if you have questions or anything.
Very easy class. Quizzes are a joke, only one essay (you get the whole semester) and the final. Lectures are thorugh; if you go to class, you don't need any of the books. Highly recommend
Overall really boring class if you do not like the subject. He can be hard to understand at times, but will be happy to answer any questions you have. There are some random quizzes, an easy paper, and the final exam. Harder than I thought it was going to be, and I think the only reason I got an A was because he liked me. Go to class though!!
A lot of lecturing. Occasional quizzes that are graded on a curve. They make up a lot of the grade though. One paper and one final. Make sure to start the study guide early and do it as you're reading. There's a lot he didn't cover. Not to bad but definitely harder than I thought it would be.
Very Boring Class. He Has A Lisp Out Of This World! Hard To Understand Him. Don't Get Me Wrong, He Is Very Funny And Amusing, But It Is Hard Understanding Him. I Barely Went To Class, I Bought The Text Book & Studied From That. Term Paper Is Pretty Easy And One Final.
Class lectures can be interesting at times, more often really boring. Do not take if you are easily distracted because this class will make you space out a lot. He's all over the place. Lectures are planned but scattered so you don't know what is important and what is not. Study guide for the final is like 5 pages long. Overall it's hard to pass.
This class is only for people who are majoring in this subject. If you are not, do not take this class. If you need an extra class, do not take this class. It's hard to understand what's important & what's not. There's only one final & a paper & some quizzes. I didn't know what exactly to study. Then last min he let us know what to study. HORRIBLE!
Very nice guy. But he is ALL OVER THE PLACE. No organization, late with grades. Very boring. I fell asleep a few times, which is extremely rare for me. Final and term paper were easy. Quizzes, not so much. Barely anyone received an A on the quizzes.
YOU HAVE TO TAKE NOTES and listen well. His quizzes are based on what he lectures on. His lectures are all over the place. Gave up reading the textbook halfway thru the semester because of that. But overall nice and funny person. He kind of looks like the character John Hammond from Jurassic Park.
At first I thought this guy had pizzazz. Then I began to lose interest in what he was talking about because he is all over the place with his lectures. And then you go in and take a quiz the next class and he asks you a question like "why were roman centurions' tooth picks light blue?" or something else completely mind boggling. Avoid this guy.
i am biased because i enjoy greek/roman myths i was exposed to the material before taking this class. sugar's lectures may seem disorganized but there is a flow. record lectures if you can't keep up, do the short readings (they are fun), and study your notes. this class was a fun/easy A for me.
Absolutely dreadful class. Sugars mumbles incomprehensibly and his lectures are erratic. You'll be lost most of the time (unless you are COMPLETELY enthralled by the course subject), and you won't know what to study. Stay away from this class.
this class was dreadful, he never knows what is going on in the class. completely scattered brain. He knows the material, just not how to teach it. his lectures are hard to follow but that's all his quizzes are on. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Stay away from this guy. Very unorganized with lectures. You will probably go over two or three myths every class each consisting of about 20 character and he expects you to remember the littlest details. He is unclear of what to study for quizzes. The final study guide is half full with subjects we didn't cover during class.
His class only consists of lecturing and quizzes (which are obviously based off the lectures). Idk why his reviews are so bad bc I thought he was a passionate professor who thoroughly explained and knew by heart every detail he was teaching. I got a b while acing most of the quizzes. If you're interested in Greek Myth I highly recommend him!
His lectures are totally random and don't follow any sort of structure. Quizzes are about once and week, then a paper, and a final. I wouldn't take him if there's another option. His voice is really annoying and even if you ask questions his answers are not helpful at all.
MOST BORING PROFESSOR EVER. he lectures all over the place. He is so unorganized with his lectures and it's so confusing. I feel like i did not learn much. try not to take him for greek myth. several small quizzes (10 points for your name which was great!) a 4 page essay & a final
All he does is lecture so attending class is definitely in your best interest. If you take the time to pay attention, lectures are fairly interesting. Super nice guy! Multiple (easy) quizzes, one 4 simple 4 page essay, & a final.
Very passionate teacher. Only problem is he is very inconsistent with his lectures. Sometimes he may even go through 4 myths in a class lecture, so many characters to keep track of. 4 quizzes which he curves, 1 paper, and a final. Only take him if he is the only professor left to teach this class.
I NEVER went to class & passed with a C. I took 2 quizzes, the final and did the easy 4 page paper. His class is very boring but he is a very nice guy. This class is just an Easy C if you want anything higher you actually have to pay attention & figure it out because his lectures have no structure.
he is boring but the subject is kind of interesting in the long run. the first lecture he left us intrigued but after that he went on tangents and never knew where our class was because he had two other one just like it.
Great teacher. Really knows what he is talking about and in his lectures he doesn't use slides or anything like that, he just talks about the subject. Tends to jump around a bit so you have to pay attention, but that is easy because he makes the subject very interesting. Encourages questions and always has a thorough answer for you
His teaching is to the point and well explained. I was amazed by the fact that he was able to tell all the greek myths from top of his head. Do except to take alot of notes, however, the book is not needed. he does have pop quizes which are big chuck of your grade. and there is one paper due. Overall, pretty easy class, do recommend for GE.
If you're in to Greek Myth, take the class because you'll get an A. If you're not... I wouldn't recommend him to you. His lectures get very boring at times, but like I said, if you're interested you'll have no problem. He knows the myths off the top of his head, occasional five question quizzes, one five page essay in which you choose the topic.
He knows the material but doesn't teach it well. His lectures can get boring and confusing and his brain is kind of all over the place. He really lacks structure. I would take a different class.
If you like Greek/Roman mythology and way of life then you will love this class. My class was once a week so it was 3 hrs long. He lectures the whole time. No images or powerpoint but all the information is interesting. take notes, study, ready the book you will be fine. 4 essays, 3-5 quizzes, one final. Most knowledgable professor I have had.
good sense of humor/relaxed teacher. EXTREMELY HEAVY LECTURE PAY ATTENTION! Definitely knows a lot about greek mythology. Recommended if you like greekmyth. Some quizzes but not difficult. Has slight lisp. If you don't like Greek Myth, I would advise you to look elsewhere. A lot of people did not show up and it was clear that they were struggling
Extremely lecture heavy with a disoriented way of teaching. Focuses mostly on the latin spelling of things which doesn't help you at all. Grades ridiculously hard on the 4- 1,000 word essays required. I would not recommend this class to anyone, even if you enjoy Greek, although mostly Roman, history.
He knows what he's talking about but his lectures aren't organized. He talks about whatever pops up in his head. You need to pay attention and read the textbook to do well in the quizzes. If you're interested in the topic, you'll like it. Otherwise, take another class if it's just for your requirements. DON'T SIT IN THE FRONT. HE SPITS.
His lectures are long and boring, he basically stands in front of the class and just lectures you on and on and on. He gives pop quizzes about every 2 weeks but they're random and seems like he makes them up on the spot. Read the text if you want to follow along in class, if not then you'll be lost. Wouldn't recommend.
I've never rated a professor before in my college career, but I really feel the need to let other students know to avoid this guy at all costs. If this isn't part of your major, this class feels like such a waste of time. All he does is ramble on and on so it's hard to stay on track of what is actually being discussed. No power points, no nothing.
He gives long, boring lectures and goes off on tangents most of the time. He knows the material well, but doesn't do much to teach it. No homework, two quizzes, one paper, and a final.
this is by far the WORST class I've ever taken at CSULB. props to Sugars because he really does know his stuff, but he is ridiculously unorganized. his lectures are long and unstructured, he even admitted that he was a mess this semester. take him for GE if he's your LAST option like he was for me. no homework, some quizzes, one paper and a final.
Unless you already have a basic knowledge of Greek mythology or your major requires it, avoid this class. I took it this semester with a lot of interest but now I am studying for the final and I have no guidance. It is impossible to take notes and keep up with his lectures. You will find yourself Googleing most the time bc the book is confusing.
Took this course during spring '15, rented the books for about $7 all together & hardly ever opened them. He is a great professor and the stories are interesting, but he is very very unorganized. Grades are unclear & never posted, plus he lost 1 of my quizzes. No midterms, only short quizzes, a 4 pg essay on anything greek myth related, & a final.
I don't think I need to repeat the disorganization of this course but its pretty evident. He is a wicked smart guy though on the topic, it is just very hard to follow along. Majority of the grade though is on 4 different essays that I found relatively easy. If you're a good writer you'll be okay. And the final was easier than expected.
Took the Greek Myth 101 class cuz greek myth interested me but this was kind of different. He knows what he's talking about but he repeats himself a lot so the lectures get boreing. Take all the extra credit he offers. So much reading but I barely read and passed. DO THE STUDY GUIDE! share notes. it helps to know basic greek myth.
Great teacher. Lectures are a little mixed around and seemingly unorganized - only terms on the whiteboard, so you better listen! 4 easy essays were scattered throughout the semester, as well as a bit of reading (not too bad). I hate reading but Sugars would talk about this stuff and made me believe it was the most interesting things in the world.
He is extremely knowledgeable and will answer to any of your questions. Although, lectures are all over the place, even though he has an outline to go off of, he is a good professor, but might require good listening skills in order to pass the class. He goes on a ton of tangents so teach yourself how to select important info and you will be okay.
Good luck honestly. I had this huge interest in Greek Mythology and wanted to have an easy class to mellow my hectic schedule out but found myself trying to stay awake during his lectures. They're interesting, but I find myself struggling to separate what's important from him rambling. He has this tendency to wander from topic to topic.
Great professor, would recommend. Although he can have ramble-lectures which are seemingly unorganized, I personally found that his interest and sense of humor does him credit. If you're into the subject even a little bit, he will make you feel right at home. 4 easy essays, a few quizzes (one on an interesting reading). Has study guide for final.
Sugars is a funny guy overall who knows his stuff, but his boring lectures made it hard to pay attention in class. A few quizzes in which he never posted the grade, one essay and a final. Textbook is not helpful and is way too confusing! Avoid him if you are really interested in greek myth.
He means well, but his lectures are long and impossible to follow. He just rambles for the whole semester then hands you a 20 page study guide (40 pages filled in - so not kidding) for the final worth 25% of your grade. There's also 4 essays which aren't too bad and random pop quizzes that are curved. Not terrible but not great either.
Sugars is a nice guy... he really knows his greek myth and he's a genuinely nice person... HOWEVER, as a professor... he's a bit less than great. His lectures are all over the place and it's nearly impossible to pay attention. He talks about one thing then another then back to where he started... and it's hard to even stay awake. Avoid this class
He is very passionate about the material. If you truly want to learn about Greek Mythology I would recommend him, but if you want an easy grade then take someone else.
Lectures are long and difficult to stick with if you aren't totally interested in greek history. Your grade is based on a few small quizzes, an essay and a final, which can be a little stressful. Amazingly I ended up with an A so he seems to be an easy grader. Overall I'd say only take this if you can stay awake for 1.25 hrs of rambling history.
Sugars is very passionate about what he teaches and is a fantastic orator. However, his lectures were a bit unorganized and did not follow the syllabus schedule. Beware of the study guide; it is 10+ pages long, but is definitely a good outline for taking notes during his lectures. There are 4 essays (1000 words min.), a few quizzes, and the final.
I accidentally took this class instead of the Greek Myth class, but Sugars is literally one of my favorite professors. He's super passionate about what he teaches and he's actually pretty funny. Lectures are long, but it gets interesting if you actually pay attention. His tests are both lecture and reading, but they're really straight forward.
Passionate lecturer. Can go off tangent and be disorganized in his lectures sometimes. He provides an outline of the lecture on the white board for each class. I recommend recording his lectures. Quizzes and exams are straight from lecture. Book is only necessary for essay references. Essay grades aren't bad. Gives a lot of feedback to improve.
lectures are long and boring. His quizzes are very specific and its hard to get full credit. Does make it interesting, but hard to pay attention
He is clearly very smart when it comes to Greek myth. However, he gives long, boring lectures with no powerpoint or visual aide. Pretty much just stands there and tells stories the whole time. Quizzes are given randomly but he usually warns you the day before. He's an odd guy but can be funny to watch. There are better professors for this class FYI
This class is whack. I took this class for a GE. Missed few classes, and I am completely lost. His quizzes aren't even based on the textbook. Just some dumb minute details he expects us to memorize. Lectures are not clear and he trails off 2/3 of the time. Doesn't even post grades so I have no idea what I have in the class.
okay, Prof. Sugars is a good guy. He's nice and reminds me of little santa clause. But teaching wise, I wouldn't take his class again. He trails off often during the lecture and his monotone voice makes you fall asleep fast. It was a struggle to keep myself awake. Because I knew basic mythology the class was okay, 5 quizzes, 1 essay, final.
Long boring lectures, easy to fall asleep and get lost. If you do not have a basic understanding of Greek Myth, do not take his class. Not clear on grading criteria and takes a long time to give back quizzes and essay. Easy A/B, but takes a lo to get through the class.
His really enthusiastic about the course and spends the entire time staying on topic, which can get a little boring for some people. I rarely ever showed up to class, as long as you know someone else in the class that can fill you in on quiz dates, you're good.
If you have a laptop/tablet/anything else to type in, use it. His lectures are somewhat all over the place since he mainly talks with little visual aid so being able to adjust your notes is key to keeping up. He writes stuff on the board, but won't talk about them in exact order so beware of that if you copy notes in exact order.
Really long, boring lectures. Laptop is recommended. Textbooks are required as he talks about them and you need them to study for the final. One essay, Final exam, and quizzes every other week. Takes attendance first few weeks, then stops. You don't need to show up to class if you have a friend. Wouldn't recommend taking this class.
extremely unstructured class. read the book so you have an idea of what he is talking about. class consisted of about 4 quizzes, a paper, and a final. you have to be extremely specific on the quizzes, and even with the right answer sometimes he wont give you the credit because its not worded the way he wanted. PICK A DIFFERENT CLASS
Reading the book only gave a better understanding of his lectures, so if you are a good listener and note taker, then the book shouldn't be necessary. He is a very lenient and nice person who always has a smile on his face.
Professor Sugars is a nice professor and enthusiastic about Greek Mythology. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about. However, his lectures are really boring and unorganized because he does not use power points. I was looking forward to Classics 101 but he ruined it all. DON'T TAKE HIM.
He's really nice and grades really easy, but his lectures seem all over the place. He gets on a subject and rambles on and on then forgets what he was supposed to do. Curves like crazy. had 5 in class quizzes 1 final and 1 term paper. just do the study guide and listen to lectures. You don't need the book.
Even with fascinating topics it can be difficult to keep your eyes open for the full 3 hours, but he is extremely intelligent and so passionate about what he's teaching. High expectations for at least 4 papers. Pop quizzes are generously graded but based on information you probably don't remember because they do not immediately follow the lecture.
He's very knowledgeable about the subject but is very disorganized in the way he runs his class. The class is composed of 5-6 quizzes and a 30% worth essay, he doesn't post grades online so you won't know what your grade is and he has lost many quizzes from students including 2 of mine. He is a very tough grader and isnt clear on what he expects .
hard to stay awake in class/repeats a lot of the stories from previous lectures/deffo knows what he's talking about/one paper at the end but TA grades it/pop quizzes/gives you a study guide/you won't pass with just simple greek mythology knowledge gotta listen to his stories or read them/no outside homework
Pretty funny. Has bi (?) weekly quizzes, y'all need to pay attention in class cause he sometimes has questions that refer to obscure details and his personal opinion on topics, I personally liked his class although I was a bit sleepy for one or two of his lectures. Has opportunities for extra credit, it'll be a good idea to take them! Read the book
Amazing and hillarious sense of humor. Love this man. Definitely stands out as a professor. I have really enjoyed his greek mythology class because of his teaching style. He is a very out of the box thinker. Brilliant man and knows his stuff. A true expert when it comes to greek anything. Lectures sometimes get boring, but an easy class.
Not a horrible teacher but is so unorganized it usually takes him 2-3 weeks to grade assignments and give them back. The grade itself is based on a number of quizzes, one term paper, and the final. READ THE DAMN TXT BOOK FOR THE FINAL. Try not to procrastinate with readings. He has them planned out to help you.
Average professor, very unorganized and there is no presentation slide for his lectures. I recorded his lecture which helped me for his pop quizzes. Very messed on informing his student about pop quiz! He would email students at 11.45pm the day before pop quiz or even 20 mins before class start. Read textbook, RECORD lectures and you'll be fine.
He is a great professor, he is very intelligent in his area. Lectures can be quite heavy but as long as you go over what you need to in the syllabus you'll be fine. He does have pop-quizzes and usually notifies you when they are so you have time to prepare. One paper as a final but is on a variety of topics you get to choose from but interesting.
LECTURES ARE PULLED OUT OF THE SKY, he gives you tons of information and never distinguishes what is important and what isn't. He plays the lectures by ear. He loses his thought so many times because he has no notes for himself and just goes off his memory. pop quizzes, one paper, and the final. doesn' take attendance, learned more from the book
I liked him a lot. He is really passionate about the subject matter he teaches and is accessible. He is very lecture heavy, but the only real homework you get is reading. It's an easy class and he is a cool guy.
Tons of pop quizzes, lectures tend to get off topic, lectures aren't really prepared. Doesn't mention what's important to know in order to pass the class. Doesn't update grades and leaves you in the dark. His lectures are kind of interesting, but it's hard not to fall asleep because he gets sidetracked and talks about something unrelated to topics.
Pros: Makes corny jokes. Passionate about the material. Will answer any question pertaining to texts. The Golden Ass is a hilarious read. Cons: Lectures don't follow the course outline in the syllabus. You can skip, but make sure you're informed about any essays or quizzes due. Very extensive study guide that should be done throughout the semester.
Really fun teacher and loved his lectures! They were interesting, but I'm someone who loves Greek Myth. They do get quite random and disorganized though, but it didn't bother me much. There's only a few quizzes, but he tells you the class before if there's gonna be a quiz next class. EASY final if you studied. I never got or read the required book.
Sugars is a great professor. Just come to class, pay attention, read the book and it's an easy A.
He doesn't post grades so you don't know what your grade is until the end. ): Also, from my experience, you don't have to do the readings. Just google the stories that he mentions in his lectures and read them online before any quizzes and you're good.
Sugars was a cool professor but the class could get a little boring at times. She isn't always clear about what he wants on the papers which can make it tough. Class is interesting but tough at times due to having to remember all of the Greek Myths.
This professor is very knowledgeable in this subject but is not good at teaching it. The most BORING class I have ever been to. I did not go to a few classes and passed with a B. Literally no one knows what he is talking about. Pop quizzes are based on reading. He assigned TOO many books and I barely read any of them. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Sugars is very passionate in Greek Myth which is great but his lectures are all verbal--he doesn't have powerpoints or any notes online so to take notes you need to be listening to what he's saying. He has one paper which is easy because you can choose your topic but has pop quizzes and doesn't tell you what you need to study for them.
Has him in fall 2018. Did not need to read if you went to class. He explains myths really good. Three quizzes based on lecture and he would announce the class before. Final was easy if you looked at his study guide (the answers are on quizlet) and an essay.
Professor Sugars is an amazing professor, especially if you are someone who is already interested in pagan cultures of antiquity. He's like a charming, funny dad at the bbq cookout. You don't /really/ need to read the book since he goes over the topics in class. He gives a study guide and also a grading rubric which is helpful.
If you dont show up to class you will not learn anything. Also his lectures are just him talking so be prepared to be bored out of your mind. Does not take school lock down seriously and makes jokes about school shootings as it happened. Highly recommend you dont take this class.
He's a tough grader but when you do score well you feel really good about yourself. You probably won't get most of your papers back but that's ok everyone passes.
Do not get a textbook. His lectures are quite slow and all over the place, he doesn't do slide presentations so he just kind of talks and rambles about random things he can remember about mythology. But, he grades easily. Your whole grade is basically 3 super short "midterms" (quizzes), final, and an essay. He'll email when quizzes are don't worry
I would recommend attending every lecture since it is what his quizzes are heavily based on. He will always announce when the quizzes will be given. I only had to write one paper and got an A on it. Your paper is mainly based on the prompt that you chose for your Greek God. Lectures sometimes get boring, but the info sticks to you if you take notes
I took this class as a quick add on for credit and it was the most boring class I have ever taken. He lectures for the entire class time and the lectures are all over the place. No powerpoints, just him writing on a blackboard. However, I missed quite a few classes and didnt even show up for the final exam and still received a C. Its not too bad.
Professor Sugars has a very unique style of teaching. His lectures are all over the place at times, but what he teaches is so fascinating. He'll let you know what to do and how to do it to receive an A . If you show up and pay attention you'll get a good grade no problem.
Not sure why he has a low rating. He is a solid choice, especially if you love Greek Mythology! Lecture heavy and it's kind of hard to follow along but it's an overall easy and passable class. I skipped a bunch of times. Funny super smart guy!
He talks a lot and wanders off topic. During the pandemic transition he was no different. He did take into consideration that everyone was going through a lot and said the grading wouldnt be as tough which was nice but it wasnt too hard to get by anyway. Skipped class a few times and feel I did a decent job
I've completed my bachelor's degree, so I can say with certainty that John Sugars was one of my favorite professors, if not my favorite one. He went through my papers with me line by line, and I really feel as though I improved as a writer because of his feedback. This guy is smart, respectful, and takes his job very seriously. He is ideal.
Incredibly lecture heavy. Wanders off topic often and will spend 15-30 mins answering someone's question, even if it's unrelated to the topic. Did not follow the syllabus & we were behind all semester. He has a few random words written down on a paper, but the topics are very difficult to follow along with. Smart guy though & very knowledgable.
Professor Sugars would not stay on one topic for more than a few minutes. This man bird walked and veered from topic to topic so often it was hard to follow what he was talking about. He also never used a powerpoint. On rare occasions, he would pull up a website and scroll around, which didn't help at all. If you want to teach yourself, your good.
This class is bad. The prof is nice & all, but the class is very disorganized. He uses no visual aids and just talks endlessly. Prepare to have a lecture on the first day. Not knowing much about Greek mythology, I found myself very confused during every lecture. I even stopped reading towards the end because I felt it was nonbeneficiary. Just no.
The good: I learned a lot from his class and the material is really interesting. He did a good job making it memorable. Easy to take notes with his lecture style. The bad: he does exams on how he interprets Greek myths. The study guide was 14 pages long. And I was always struggling to stay awake in lecture which was new for me
Grades by 5 quizzes, an essay, and the final. The quizzes are composed of a few short answer questions, and he provides a study guide that is very useful for studying for them.
Gives pop quizzes randomly, gives a ton of reading every class meanwhile he never has any lesson plans. He has no slides or no real direction to his lectures, he just rambles on from his mind. If you sit in the first row, be prepared to be spat on. He is passionate about the material and that helps but not too much.
being stuck in a class with JMS is like being stuck in a convalescent home. you know the type of teacher that's very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their field, but can't teach to save their life? that's him. four essays, three pop quizzes, and a final exam. that's it. find the study guide on quizlet and hope for the best.
no lesson plans whatsoever, rambles a lot. only assignments are 3 quizzes, 4 essays, and a final (which are still not inputted yet and my final is tomorrow). he's passionate abt the subject which is great but i find myself not being able to pay attention
Very easy class for people who like to hear about Greek myths. Just pay attention to lectures to ace each quiz and essay. The people complaining that he did not use powerpoint or have "Lesson plans" are slackers. The lesson plan is the study guide of Greek myth topics and figures that he gives you in the syllabus.
Class consists of only lectures, he mostly just talks, there will be no power point or organization. He is at times humorous and knows so much of what he teaches, you can tell he has a passion for mythology. Your final grade consists of 4 quizzes one essay and a final. He grades very lightly with a lot of extra credit opportunity! Easy A!
The dude is very nice and understanding but his style of teaching is almost purely lecturing (no slides/PowerPoint lectures) with only a word doc of a bunch of words on the projector. His grading is really generous BUT the content of his quizzes is very heavy on his lectures (which are hard to follow). You do 4 essays which kind of help w learning.
This class is excellent for anyone who loves history and enjoys anything about greek, etc. Professor Sugars is very kind and caring of his students! There are many papers, a lot of quizzes, and lots of reading. He grades by a few things but his grades are fair. His lectures are heavy and confusing.
Great class, I loved his lecture style. He told the myths with passion so it was easy to stay engaged. Students complained about being bored but I found class really interesting. Easy quizzes every couple of weeks, 1 paper thats 4 pages, many extra credit opportunities. You can make up quizzes you miss, he is understanding and an easy A. Take him!
A great and enthusiastic professor who clearly loves to teach. I would take more of his classes if I could.
Professor was super lecture heavy, with basically no visual cues or aids. Relied solely on his lecturing from the very first day, and gave out a few quizzes. You don't know what your grade is, and it can be hard to follow. Most of the time I found lectures to be boring, despite being interested in Greek Mythology.
I took him years ago as an elective. This guy is awesome. You have to pay attention in class and read the assigned reading since he didn't really use PowerPoint (maybe he does more now). Getting an A in this class is a breeze if you do that. It is just reading and active listening.
He's an easy grader on quizzes. No homework/assignments just one essay at the end of semester. Lots of quizzes, show up to lectures and take notes. He doesn't have notes or any visual aids so you just have to pay attention. What I disliked most was that he doesn't grade anything until the last week of the semester so you don't know your grade.
Extremely unorganized. He is a nice person and deeply passionate about Greek mythology, but he is so unorganized that he makes learning impossible. Especially when in other courses that you devote more time to. So don't think you can take this class and have an easy stroll. No slide presentations, 6-7 quizzes, 1 paper, 1 final
Literally no tech skills at all. I'm sitting here May 16th, (our last class was the 14th) and there's not a single grade in the grade book. I really have no idea what my grade is, could be an A, or could be an F. So if you want GPA, don't be in this class, if you love greek mythology and want to learn a lot, this is your guy. He's funny, and caring
4 essays and a couple quizzes plus the final is all you get graded on. grades are due tomorrow and the only thing graded so far is the first quiz that we did in february (wasnt graded til april) so i have no idea what my grade is. the lectures are interesting if you can pay attention in online classes (esp at night). if youre unsure, dont take it
Lectures can be disorganized, but the professor is knowledgeable and passionate. Assignments are light, but challenging. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for preparing for quizzes and essays.
Nice guy but impossible to learn. Just rambles for the entirety of class with slides. The essays are easy enough but the quizzes are based on random info from somewhere in his lecture that is impossible to pick apart. The class isn't terrible but I regret taking it.
Class consists of about 4 essays in total + quizzes + a final exam. The class will be hard to understand if ur not consistently reading and doing the study guide. He's an easy grader on the essays so it's easy to get an A,just meet the criteria. He doesn't use canvas and just emails all the materials. U won't know your grade till end of semester :(
No PowerPoint, does not use Canvas, and just rambles on things not related to the study guides. Very unstructured and makes the time drag, dk what's important, very boring. Nice guy, but do not take this class if you do not have to. But you can get away with not reading. He also gave us the final exam study guide and test at 1:30am day of exam.
i dislike the structure of this class. he doesn't use canvas at all, and everything is sent through email after our once a week 2 1/2 hour boring zoom lecture. random quizzes and 4 long essays. only thing i like about him is his passion for the subject.
this was the most unprofessional and disorganized class i've taken at csulb. there's no information on canvas, he uses no powerpoints during the 3 hour lectures. he just rambles and talks about things that seem to have no relevance and it's difficult to follow or understand him. also this class isn't about paganism it's about roman history.
He's actually not that bad!! I promise! He's a great professor and his lectures are very interesting. I'd say take down notes since he just yaps. He'll say you have a quiz two days before. I never do readings and I'm fine!! As long if you have knowledge about Greek myth beforehand! No homework! He waits til the end of the year for our grade tho
His lectures are horrendous. Uses notes written in latin and doesn't teach, just goes off on tangents. He doesn't grade anything until after the semester is over. We also only took 2 quizzes and the last quiz was given as a take home exam on the final week, and 3/4 essays were constantly delayed until 3 days after the semester ended. DO NOT TAKE
Online class that doesn't require attendance. Never went to lecture unless there was a quiz or exam. He's very lenient with due dates for essays and there were 4 essays total. Super manageable and hes very passionate about the subject matter. Grading took awhile but if you put in effort its a guaranteed A. Saw other student just didn't do the work.
Proffesor Sugars is someone who is heavily interested in these subjects, fairly easy class, as it he lets you make up tests you missed, very understanding, and is a easy grader.
