I get very nervous talking in front of a crowd. I took Sunvold's class and he was so patient and kind, he knew I was nervous during my speech but he did not hold that against me. If it were not for his patience and understanding I would not of made it.
It's a tough class no matter who you get. He is very fair and make his expectations known from day 1. Take it seriously and you'll do well.
didn't like teaching style, said the same things over and over again... isn't specific as i'd like my professor to be when assigning projects (especially when he is very particular when grading). i'd advise fellow students to avoid him if at all possible.
Not a helpful Teacher, So picky when grading, Gives very hard exams, Do not take him if possible, no clear at all, Makes you nervous when speaking
Hard teacher but if you keep up with the reading, then you will do just fine. Also, make sure to prepare for your speeches, because if you don't you will not do well, although I did. I happen to be a different story though.
Mr. Sunvold's class is very interactive. Be sure to follow the guidelines for your preparation outline carefully! His tests are hard, but if you study really hard and do very well on the tests, he may award you a bonus point!
His test are very hard! He makes you outline entire chapters. He takes the class way, way, way too seriously! He is an okay guy, but I would never take a class with him again.
Didn't score any lower than a B on any of his test, yet he still managed to give me a D.... Grading of speechs is very subjective, very uptight about outlines being done a particular way, yet not very specific while assigning... i wouldn't recommend him at all.
He gives you 100% control of your own grade, fair, I like his grading policy, different and effective.
Great Teacher!
Fairly hard tests. Unique grading system (good). Watches the clock like a hawk on speech times.
AWFUL instructor. Doesn't "get it". This is a freshman college speech class, not a doctoral dissertation prep class. Boring. Self-absorbed man.
I got an A it was is easy for me. The other ratings sound like those of bad students. Sunvold is funny. Follow the outline format and you'll be fine. do 3 speeches and outlines and you'll get an A. Do informative speech on a disease-easy to organize. He'll promptly return email. Don't make a poster for visual aid-they fall down.Good teacher.
its hard to follow along with his class... i hardly ever know whats going on because the schedule changes...as well as all you ever hear are stories irrelvant to what he should be teaching...and the test and outlines are just ridiculous
Great teacher. he evaluates speeches based on your level, and would give you advice on how to improve. very flexible. Teaches whats really necessary. Even though the class is kind of easy, you learn the most important things about speech communication. I would recommend mr. Sunvold to everyone.
Does not have the best grading scale. For example, It is either a 100 or a zero on homework or speeches. I do not recommend this professor.
his grading system is 0 , 1 , 2 on speeches and i got a 2 (on the 1st speech), 3 ( on the 2nd speech)(can you believe it), 2 (on the 3rd speech) and i still don't like him that much. his class is kinda hard. if you really want an A in his class you have to work really HARD for it, i really REALLY mean it. Sometimes his class is boring, and other ne
I was unimpressed with his teaching style. He seems more concerned with you having to turn in your outlines then actually teaching you to become an effective orator. On a scale of one to ten with one being the lowest, the best grade I can give this guy is a two.
an abject failure. began class by saying he thought it unreasonable for a speech class to have written assignments but places more emphasis on outlines than speeches themselves.
Everything is easy in this class except for his grading. He is very very hard on grading and is anal on his stupid rules. He cannot teach and he drifts on with his stupid stories. Overall, I would not take this teacher because he is not a good teacher no matter how easy the class seems.
The class in all seems a give-away..Meaning easy to pass. His grading sucks bad, as well as his attitude. The first days he will seem real mean (trying to see who will drop), but ignore him, do what you have to do and you will be fine. Speeches are easy, but his test suck bad ! NO way to study for them, just luck...in all sucks !!
Overall hes a really nice person. The only thing that I didn't like was his grading scale. Its out of 10 and its possible to make a 0 on your speeches. Make sure you do your speeches on something hes interested in. Nice guy though.
This professor, unfortunately is the worst professor I've ever had so far. He do not have structure, he is NOT consistent and he talks about things that irrelevant to the topic. His grading system is hard... 1, 2, 3, and if you get an "A" consider yourself lucky. The exam is hard, he talks things that are tottaly way off the book. Good luck!
His class isn't hard, and his grading scale has changed so it's a lot better. However, it's still impossible to study for his tests...don't bother trying. It's 3 days after grades are posted...and he STILL hasn't posted my class's grades. Basically-take another teacher if you can.
Nice guy. Too bad he gets a bad rap from people who don't like to take any constructive criticism or do any work.
Do not take this teacher. There is no way to make sense of his grading system, and he strays so far off topic.
I took an online class with Professor Sunvold and he was very helpful and nice. He was very good at communicating with me and helping me to understand things. He was very fair and as long as you do all the work you will get a good grade. I missed a couple assignments which is why I received a C, otherwise I would have gotten an A.
He's a nice guy, he seemed to grade a little harder on some people then others. It is not an easy A class but you actually do learn how to get up and speak. Reading the book is a must for passing the tests. He does care about his student and will help you picking out a topic.
Professor Sunvold makes speech very interesting. His grading method is unorthodox but not difficult. His tests are difficult and tend to focus on minutiae from the book instead of broader subject matter. He is a caring teacher though, so that helps.
I attempted this class online with this instructor and it was a nightmare. Try a different instructor, you will be happier for it. He may be a nice enough guy but is unorganized, changes things at the last minute and expects you to just deal with it. Didn't seem to care whether you passed or failed. I do not recommend this instructor!!!
This is the worst teacher ever. He will tell 3 different people 6 different things. He contradicts him self all the time, and cant remember what he says from 1 day to the next. He will change his mind and not tell any of the students. you can only get a F, C or A on assignments. he is too good in his own mind to have a normal grading system.
This professor i a fair guy. He makes many deals with students to help them pass, but he often forgets or makes some stipulation to that deal later. He offers a lot of extra credit to ensure a passing grade in his class. If you show up on time and pass at least one speech and one test you will pass this class.
Class time was used more to talk about a ridiculously biased grading scale than actually working on projects to be graded. He's extremly critical and judgemental but claims to be constructive. Syllabus constantly changed, deadlines were unclear and he's a bit condescending. If u still choose to take this class, say goodbye to ur gpa.
His grading makes absolutely no sense. He makes guidelines on his video submissions for online classes UNREALISTIC. Then complains that they are poor quality. He does not teach, inconsistent grading and has an attitude to any email you send as if we are a burden. Do not take this professor, trust me. Worst so far.
Took him online. The syllabus is clear but I think his requirements of submissions are too strict. There should be a couple options or he needs to be up-to-date with technology. Having a projector IS required unless you want to lose points (syllabus DOES NOT state this). I passed but wouldn't have taken him knowing what I know now.
Had an outstanding grade until the submission of my final two speeches. He claimed plagiarism on my required speech outline (which was perfect MLA format AND cited CORRECTLY) -- failing me. He is a horrible professor with obscene requirements and made several last-minute changes to the online calendar.
get away from him do not take... have you ever seen a 4-6 page speech? well you have to write two back to back. you better be perfect if you take his class. 4-6 pages in 4-6 mins? wow oh and he picks the topics.. the most boring topics a pursusive speech about congress men coooommmmee on. and informative about sids or the knights temple?
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! srsly. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! this 'communication expert' has more typos and grammatical errors than i've ever seen. does not understand semantics. grading policy is not objective whatsoever. class requirements have nothing to do with speech. this is the worst college experience i've ever had. save yourself the time and money.
he is an ok teacher you just goota deal with the material.
WOW. I worked my butt off in this class and as a usual A-student, I was shocked to get a high C. The comments are true, he treats this class harder than any other subject (and says himself that speech is one of the most difficult at university level). My organic chemistry class seemed easier than this guy's SPEECH class. Do not take -- he's bad.
Please DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROF SUNBOLD. He is the worst professor that I ever had. He is not fair teacher and he doesn't help students. His requirements from online class are super strict. I do not understand that he continues as a teacher.
I had him for an online speech class. He is a very strict professor with no exceptions to any of his rules outlined in his syllabus. He does not accept late work, no difference if it was seconds late or days, no exceptions. All the requirements of the class were detailed in the outline so you know what is required and there is no leniency for them.
This class is NOT hard! He is strict and it is more intense than you would imagine a speech class to be but it is very laid out and specific. Keep up with the work and you will get an A. He also gives a good amount of extra credit if you do miss any assignments.
I took this online, and I would never recommend it to anyone. The directions are not laid out very well. He posts them, but sends 10+ emails with other small requirements he forgot to mention. It's very scattered. You need 7 people in your speech audiences, if you are short one or go over time by 15 seconds - one letter grade off your speech each.
If you do what he asks and make an effort you can easily score an A or B. He is a good professor.
I took his hybrid online class. he lets you take quizzes twice and counts the highest grade, SO EASY. and he really actually cares if you succeed. i had a meeting with him and he told me what i needed to do in order to pass. he has a background in counseling and really cares if you succeed! awesome man!
Passed all the outlines and assignments that were given throughout the term. I took his class online and failed my final 2 speeches. He grades extremely strict on your speeches. I wouldn't recommend him to any of my friends.
I took this class online in the summer. It was really easy. He was really nice and answered all my emails positively. The only downside is that he uses Sakai AND the book's website so everything is a little scattered and not too organized. Read the syllabus very well and make sure you pay attention to the speech requirements and you will be fine.
Overall the class was pretty easy. Only 3 or 4 assignments besides the speeches. Only 2 speeches required, and final is optional/extra credit. BUT figuring out all of his requirements is like a treasure hunt. Some in assignment, one in message, some in module. He is just all over the place, and contradicts himself a lot! Also not good with emails.
His class was constantly engaging, and in a good way. Only one speech and one test are required, however its very possible to attain an A. His class is based on a point system, hes slightly funny and definitely interesting. He was helpful. Textbook use was very limited, since all you had to do is read the chapter and you were set. Overall great.
The whole class is based off of 10 points. 1 point for each of the 4 quizzes and 2 points for each of the 3 speeches. The way he sets up the class is so that you don't have to do every speech. He is a terribly hard speech grader and most people in the class didn't pass the quizzes. I would recommend finding a different professor.
His online class was awful. He was busy getting his own higher degree which apparently meant he was too busy to help me with my problems. All his tests were difficult because the quiz questions covered topics that were not found in the book very often, and his quiz guides were only helpful for the first 2, the rest did NOT HELP! AVOID THIS GUY!
He was constantly at least 10 minutes late. He was rude and somewhat crude. I really didn't like his class and I wouldn't recommend anybody take his class. I was not impressed at all
Terrible teacher. Constantly late. Teaches speech out of a textbook verbatim when he isn't even a good speaker himself. Super critical of small details.
I really appreciated Professor Sunvold's use of using everyday examples of how speech can relate to everyday life experiences! It's easy to get an A. I'm tired of past and current students who don't apply themselves giving him a bad rep. I've even referred future students to him. Great Job to John Sunvold!!!!
I LOVED this teacher! he was so nice. Very easy gives you many chances to get an A, He lectures the first six weeks-ish and then you present assignments the rest of the semester. He gives you so many many many chances to do each assignment, you really would have to do nothing to fail.
What a wonderful class! Professor Sunvold is tough but if you follow the syllabus, read the text and are open to guidance you will breeze through the course.
Mr. Sunfold was an awesome teacher, he was funny, very smart and reasonable. Always thoughtful of his student's busy lifestyles. He made our assignment schedule very flexible, and we appreciated that. Classes were always very interesting, informative and fun. I wish he taught other classes, I would def. take them. I’m gonna miss his class.
Class is an easy A if your not lazy and do the work. Great teacher! He gives plenty of chances to re-take tests and gives tons of time to turn in assignments. Also gives a lot of extra credit. He even let's you re-do speeches. Super smart teacher, very funny and has a great personality. You'll love him.
HE LETS YOU MAKE YOU OWN GRADE SO ITS UP TO YOU I THOUGHT THE CLASS WAS EASY IF YOU PUT FORTH THE EFFORT GREAT GUY THANKS MR SUNVOLD
He was late to class our very first meeting, he is unclear with some assignments, though his point system is easy. He's very critical about grading speeches, for an 'intro' he's overly anal about certain things, even how you dress for a college level speech. I would not suggest anyone to take this professor if they're looking to enjoy class.
I thought he was great and interesting and he gave plenty of work from the textbook as well as his own. He offered extra credit and the chance to retake the exam. As an adult, I found him responsible and thorough. He was sick and still came to class and lectured although you could tell his throat hurt.
I got a 100 on every assignment/exam. Just "passing" on speeches, his grading is extremely strict. He is definitely "nit-picky." His instructions for assignments are in both the assignments section and the syllabus and they often contradict each other. I got by on skimming the book. For online, you have to record your speeches in front of 7 people.
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! Not a good teacher. I felt like he wants to see you fail.
I took this a hybrid 1/2 semester class. Not a bad teacher but very specific on the way he wants things. If assignment says 2 pages he will take off points for even a sentence or two less.Very fair and an easy A if you follow directions given. Also gives a good amount of extra credit chances.
I disagree with anyone who states this guy is a good teacher. I find him to be super lazy. He does not grade assignments for weeks. He does not explain anything more than his boilerplate lessons. Locks down Sakai and removes useful tools. I completely agree with the person who called him rude. His rude to all students. Pick another teacher. A
If you put in a good effort and do the work this is an easy A. He gives extra chances to get an A, I am astounded at how many of my classmates just didn't bother doing the assignments and quizzes. I dreaded a speech class but I ended up enjoying the class a lot.
This class is a joke due to the teacher. The first 4 weeks is going over the syllabus & how to access the online material. He frequently extends class & just talks about random subjects to fill up time. I learned more about My Little Pony then speech. You have too do about 2 speeches, 1~2 tests, 10 online quizzes & 2 papers too pass with an B+/A.
I thought professor sunvold was ok to take. He is firm but he tries to be fair. As long as you complete all the assignments in the way he asks, by their due dates, you should be fine. He gives extra credit, so there is a little wiggle room for error.
Really cool teacher
I am currently enrolled in his course on campus. He mentioned the first week about the drop out rate for this course. He often talks about his accolades & various degrees but the proof is not in his pudding. I've a 4.0 GPA and about to be in the Honors Institute. I have never struggled so much in a course which says something. He is not merciful.
Overall easy class, very fair grading scale. Professor teaches pretty clearly and doesn't overwhelm you with homework. He is however a little bias towards his political preference, but to each his own, I would recommend.
He teaches like a college teacher should. You decide how much work you want to do. You are not penalized for the work you don't do. He uses a point system and makes it easy to keep track of. Easy A.
For what should be an easy online course, this professor makes it worse than having a root canal. Very poor grading system. Also, his instructions are not clear and his assignments are posted last minute. I will NEVER take another one of his classes again! BE WARNED!
The professor took up most of the class time talking about random subjects not related to speech. When it came to learning, not much was conveyed. His expectations for your speeches were through the roof for being an intro class. The book is mandatory and is to be read completely. I would avoid taking his class.
Worst class I have ever taken. Instructions for the speeches were not clear. I did not know until after I had given my first speech about the time limit. I took a hybrid class. This is one of the first classes I took at Seminole State and I wish I had chosen something else.
Hey look: I'm taking his class right now, but I think it's worth getting a big "W" on my transcript, losing my money instead of staying a day more in his class. This guy is terrible and what ever else you can think of him. please my fellow comrades run for your grade.
Lectures won't lie, very long, drawn out & boring. Class has 10 points, a bunch of 1/2, 1, & 2 pt assignments. You can pick & choose what assignments to do. Only 3 quizzes, two attempts at the final, and 3 speeches but you only need to pass one! Nice, light-hearted guy, extreme conservative though. Makes the long night class tolerable.
He gives pop quizzes if your phone is out and assigns homework in advance.
Overall the class is pretty easy except for the speeches. Make sure you have 7 people that you can see at all times and you can hear and see the visuals. He is extremely picky and will change the format of the speech so you can't submit it and will relieve a zero.
The class was enjoyable and hard at the same time but if you fallow the professor instructions and leave your fears (public speaking) at the door, a good grade will fallow.
Professor Sunvold is a wonderful teacher. Emails were constantly sent out to remind students of homework. Many extra credit options were provided, along with clarity of questions being answered if something wasn't explained. You have to pass at least one speech but it really isn't bad.
I had this professor for Intro to Oral Communication (Speech) during my first semester. I really enjoyed the class. It was intimidating at first, but Professor Sunvold was clear in his instruction; lectures were informative. The syllabus and grading criteria were clear. If you follow the class schedule, you will pass.
Hybrid class. Tries to make canvas "Idiot proof" actually makes it more confusing. Sometimes wouldn't publish modules on time, which screws up due dates for quizzes/assignments (aggravating). Puts assignments directly into module, so can't quick reference due dates. Have to pass 1 out of only 2 speeches. Take a reg class if you get super nervous.
I learned a lot and would take the professor again. The class discussions were very interesting and helped me see how communication is so important in my life. Work is assigned with extra time to complete it. I liked that.
Professor Sunvold uses a different grade system, which, in my opinion, is much better for the student and offers plenty of opportunities to pass a class and get an A! I would definitely take another class with Prof. Sunvold. He made me feel at ease when doing my speeches. Thank you professor!! M.
Amazing lectures. A little work overload at the end of the semester, especially if your a full time student. This is offset by a limitless amount of 're-tries' for failed work. Overall great teacher and speaker. If I could I would add more lectures on the assigned book work and add homework based on the at home reading to ensure it is being read.
He is a great teacher. He will make sure to explain you the whole corse, but you deffentaly need to do your part to stay up to speed. Very willing to make sure you have enough chances to pass your speeches and gives you positive feedback if you do need to retake one. Seems to be a hard a$$ but a great teacher. I hope you get a chance to meet him.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!!! Im trying to save all your grades now. He doesn't respond to your messages until he feels like it, doesn't explain anything well, and is the hardest grader. Got a 0 on my speech for one of audience members not paying attention (he was actually scratching his arm). Save your grades, pick a different teacher
Very helpful, great feedback, learnt a lot.
Because it is online, he expects you to perform speeches for audiences of 7 people. You create your own audience. He organizes his online class by modules, so you have to be sure to check in on his course every so often, because Canvas won't remind you when his assignments are due. I missed a few quizzes but aced the speeches. Ended with a C.
Currently taking this course. His instructions are not clear at all and super confusing which makes it hard to write speeches. Also, takes a while to respond. Would drop out of this course if I could.
Very tough grader.. VERY.
PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIM! He is terrible to work with. He gives the wrong instructions for different assignments. He takes very long to respond to messages, and is very disrespectful. DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS. He is a harsh grader, and gives lots of busy work that doesn't apply to the class. Overall, so awful. PLEASE PICK ANOTHER TEACHER
Went through the whole course without purchasing a text book. Didnt assign 1st assignment until 6 weeks in. Didnt take anything away from this class. Absolute waste of money and time pick another teacher. His dry and dragging lectures will make you want to be in math class.
Worst professor ever and difficult for no reason , would not take again . He talks all class period long about one simple subject instead of breaking things up and says comments when too many people get up to leave to use the restroom , or leave for a stretch break or leave just in general cause your ready to go home .
Worst Professor ever , do not take unless he is a last option choice .
Take Sunvold only if he is your last option! The class is very easy to pass if you just get your work is done and you attend the mandatory speech days (no excuses accepted). Profs. Sunvold himself reiterates EVERYTHING 5 times which really got to me as the course went on as it made me lose focus quickly. Lectures are also very dry.
John Sunvold is probably the worst teacher I have had the misfortune of meeting in my academic career. This class was a waste of time. He says he is in the students favor but it is a lie. He thinks hes like the best teacher. Homework is just overwhelming and no point to it. Students steer clear of Professor Sunvold. If you want a good grade.
I'm taking Professor Sunvold for American Government, and I really enjoy his class. There's definitely a lot of reading, but as long as you put the work in you'll get a good grade. No midterm, and I don't see a final on the schedule either! I like that he incorporates a mix of different activities and discussions into his class either week!
Mr. Sunvold is amazing! had him back in Fall 2019, he wasn't bad at all I enjoyed his speech class a lot we had mandatory speech days and you were not allowed to make them up but his class was doable! He had canvas assignments that were pretty easy as along as you did them, and I learned alot about speech.
Mixed emotions for me. Throughout my term, there was a decent amount of work but his course revolves a lot around reading. LOTS of reading and watching videos. However, the quizzes/assignments are straightforward if you actually read plus he offers extra credit & extends due dates. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE EXTRA CREDIT EVEN IF YOUR GRADE IS FINE.
Professor Sunvold is great at teaching. His course was well rounded and you can tell he was dedicated to helping his students pass and succeed. He is responsive and extremely helpful when you reach out to him. I would definitely recommend other students take his courses.
He goes off on tangents in class that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. Assigns homework to be discussed in class then when the time comes he doesn't even discuss the topics he told you to research. To get a good grade in this class you have to be rude & interrupt others talking in order to "stand out". Pick another teacher if you can.
This class is relatively easy, as long as you get the work in on time. A lot of the assignments are graded on a pass/fail basis, which, if you study, will bode well for you. It is an online class so I didn't get to interact with the professor very much, would definitely recommend taking this course in person.
