DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! His tests are EXTREMELY HARD AND AMBIGUOUS. I am maintaining a GPA of 3.78 and I barely passed his class w/ D. I am not joking. STAY AWAY from this guy!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I made the mistake of taking him for speech and the first day he let everyone know that if you did everything perfect, you would probably pass with a "C" he is unclear, and not helpful and way way to demanding.

He is the WORST teacher you'll ever have. He is awful and very unjust evaluating. He fail all the girls in the class.
His telecourse lets you know what is expected, when its due & what will be graded. Be sure to cite your resources to back up your opinions. Videos are optional. Read the book & use the workbook. Class is good. (...and what's with the weight references...!
I thought his speech class was very easy I don't know why you people think his class is hard. Maybe he has changed!
His assignments are unclear because what he grades you on is not what he told you to expect. We read the textbook for no reason and he has a very unfair grading scale. I did everything above and beyond what he asked for in the class and still got a C!
Worst Professor ever! Very close-minded! He failed most of the girls in class! The highest a girl could score was a C in his class. He's vague in his teachings. Try Colburn or Dellacosta for Speech and Tobia or Rigney for U.S. Gov't. Good luck!

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He has double standards, & is the worst, when it comes to grading b/c the student doesn't know what he is looking for, so they can never better themselves. Don't take his class, ever!
Great speech teacher! his grading system might be a little different but do everything he ask for and youll ace that class with no prob!
Gave syllabus at orientation & was very clear about when assignments were due & what he requires but you HAVE to be VERY motivated & diligent to do well. TONS of reading. Also, if you're unclear about ANYTHING, ask & he'll discuss when the class meets!
i guess im lucky- got a B and im a girl- but he is a horrible teacher- unclear as to what he wants on the speech, but atleast he tells you what you did "wrong" on the speech-the man LOVES visuals!! he favors people
this guy is a funny dude. Instead of letting you know what need to be done, the will talk to you about Disney World the whole class period. Then he will look at you crazy when you don't know what to do next class period. Don't take his class!!!!!
Mr. Sunvold is a magnificent teacher and a very smart man. With two masters degrees, he's willing to help and implements a fundamental grading style that guarauntees an 'A' as long as you do the work. His favoritism is NOT based on gender.
This course is a required freshman class and should be easier, syllabus lacks a lot of useful information, and if you take this class, ask lots of questions.
I took his online course. He was very helpful. You get what you put into it. He is a good teacher and grades fair. Dont expect to get something you didnt earn. Dont expect him to give grades away. Dont be so lazy, somethings are your fault. Crybaby's
Mr. Sunvold is a poor professor. He does not clearly explain what he expects from your assignments and then grades them harshly, even unfairly. Sunvold has no people skills-- it is not surprising that he's only teaching online courses this semester.

I was very ill and in the hospital taking his telecorse, I made it very clear to him that i was ill and he made it difficult to pass, got me confused with a different student 4 times and then failed me b/c i failed to complete the "shadowing an elected offical" project completely. horrible.
Worst teacher ever. He is very unclear, unorganized, and is always writing ridiculously long and stupid emails. Changes dates and deadlines at least 35 times a week, and sends everyone at least 10 emails a week. Horrible professor.. truly horrible.
This teacher is awful. He changes deadlines every five seconds. His questions in the exams are hard and complicated, things you haven't even discussed. Don't take him, run!

Most of the people giving negative ratings will not graduate from Valencia or any other school. Because this was actually one of the better teachers at Valencia. Flexable, knowledgable, and very curteous. Great class!
professor is tough, the only way i would say i got an A was because of some extra credit i made, a chance for one retake if i would have end up with a c or b-. Professor is nice just you need more time to memorize 20 vocabulary and 10 question answers. If you like challenge then this is it.
Those who rate Prof Sunvold poorly need to check out their biases. He's very clear in his assignments, but I couldn't believe the number of stupid questions he put up with. Very good teacher, really likes the subject he teaches on.
The Prof is good. The amount of information covered in the class and what is expected of you however is a lot to follow especially for a telecourse. You need to make be on your Ps and Qs to pass this one.

He likes to make you think his class is hard when you start. It really isn't, just do the assignments. He even lets you retake one test. I ended up with an A.
I took his online class, and in the beginning it seemed to have a lot of work but in the end it was a very easy class. Missed an assignment and the extra credit and still recieved an A.
Made government a very hard class. Was very strict on work turned in. Can not take any other class along with his class. Very specific on how he wants things but is very vague on the instructions that he gives.
I have a full time job and i take 5 courses as well. I was also an honor student last year. I spent the most amount of time on his course. I went to sleep dreaming about it. I was depressed because of his course. I called in sick to work to finish his assignments. dont take him. I got a C. He didn't even reply to some of my emails.

Took American Government Online, class was easy as long as you do the assignments. He also gives a lot of extra credit. I missed an assignment and two quizzes and I made a B.

This guy is an idiot! I am taking him online. Ive never failed a class, but He is unclear about what work needs to be done for an assignment- then he gives horrible grades for the work you do. He doesnt check instuctions before posting and he takes forever to email back. I would NOT recommend this teacher at all. I hated this class! DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! i took his online course and spent 75% of my total study time on this subject. I have A's in all of my other classes. The weekly quizzes are terrible. you have 2 attempts but you are never able to check your mistakes in order to correct them. He gives crazy ridiculous assignments! we had to job shadow a state official!
The action assignment really sucked!!! He checks his emails late and does NOT respond quickly at all, and then he announces that there is additional time after all to complete the assignment for a late grade; says you have 24 hours to do so, but doesn't send the email until AFTER the 24hours have passed!! I hate this class!! DO NOT take it online!!
I took U.S. Gov. with this professor, and it was the biggest mistake ever! He's not helpful at all, takes forever to grade assignments, takes forever to respond to your emails, and when he does respond to the wall of text that you typed him trying to get some answers he'll give u a two word response, and leaves you without a clue.(continued above)
Furthermore, this is not just me. I spoke with other students when we had to volunteer for a political campaign for an assignment, and nobody liked this guy. All you'll be doing is constant textbook studying and he doesn't spark your interest at all. If anything he makes me not enjoy politics anymore.
He is an easier teacher. I would suggest taking his class as a flex-start class over a 6 week period. not a lot of work and gives plenty of extra credit.
This class was extremely disorganized. Didn't receive grades for many things until end and assignments were not available when they needed to be done. No teacher interaction. I received an A but do not feel that I learned anything at all. I don't recommend this particular professor to anyone who is interested in learning something.
8 week online class requires an unbelievable amount of work. I took 4, eight week summer classes and received 3 A's and a B and I can tell you that I did not have as much required work in all of those classes combined as I did in this one online class with John. There is 1 test which is at the end and it is 15 essay questions. Lighten Up PLEASE!!!!
TERRIBLE! I am in his online US Gov class right now and he gives way to much work. I have to write so much in this class, more than all my Gordon Rule classes combined. A lot of ppl take online classes because they don't have time to sit in a class due to other obligations and he makes it so hard, I'm a straight A student and be lucky to get a C.

I took this class online. The work this guy assigned was completely ridiculous. You'd swear you were taking the final class to obtain your PhD in Politics! The guy is unreachable and when he finally gets back in touch with you its too late. He makes you watch 2 30min videos/unit that are too small to see and then take a quiz on them. BORING!
Lectures and videos are difficult to get through. They add up to be pretty long. Information is very repetitive. Some essays are not very clear or straightforward, some are busywork. Exam and grading policies leave a lot to be desired. Overall, would not take his classes again personally.
He did all his work right after 2000 election; now he is those. He never does any work. He takes 2 weeks to grade a paper. He talks like he is THE best teacher in this country. I send him almost 10 mail and I got from him 0. Please Please PLease don't take his class. He is an I----.
Stay away from teacher he sets you up to fail. Quizes have 5 questions you get one or two wrong you fail, forever to grade papers, provides no phone # or office to ask questions strictly email, which he responds to when he feels like it. provides 15 questions all essay form, spent entire weekend answering, at test wanted only two.

Prof. Sunvold was the worst educator that I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Do not take this class. I have 187 credit hrs. and he was the worst instructor ever. You cannot learn in an environment like his. He sets you up for failure. The work load is immense and does not teach you what you need to know. He is the WORST instructor ever.
Do not take this guy!! The quizzes are only 5 questions at 3 points a piece and they are all on videos. If you miss one, you've got a B. He also only accepts .rtf files and does not allow resubmissions. He was not forgiving or helpful.
I'm only a few weeks into his online Government class and holy mackeral! He assigns soooo much reading and writing material it's ridiculous. I, like most students, am taking this course as it's required for my Associates Degree. I would NOT recommend this professor. His material is lengthy and very dry and boring.
I took him online and I'm normally an A student, ended up with a B. Worked my butt off, but he's just a hard teacher to work with. The videos were very dry, and his tests are tough! If possible take another teacher!
DON'T take a class with this professor, that is, if you would like a decent grade. I'm normally an "A" student and barely pass his INSANE quizzes, resulting in me almost having a C in his course I'm taking online! Terrible class. He was completely unorganized and barely taught us the information. Instead of learning the material that we would be tested on, He showed us about 3 pointless movies. We are also expected to complete an insane amount of homework, you are basically teaching yourself in his class.
For the most part he's a good teacher. The course is an easy class. If you're looking to really learn a lot about government you're not in the right class, but if you're looking to get the credit or an easy A then take it! He's a really cool, laid back, easy professor. You are in control of your grade pretty much.
The class is pretty easy. All you have to do is read from the textbook and study a little. He puts up these super helpful study modules, like flashcards and videos. Really nice guy too! He doesn't let you make up tests, but he does put in a lot of extra credit so it's easy to get an "A". He's really fun,and class is interesting. Take him!!

Open book quiz, quiz are test question,and gives out test essay questions in advance to study. Hes funny,straight forward and makes things interesting. I'm not sure how anyone could fail.
Great professor. The papers are not too long for a GR class. there are quite a few papers but very doable. there are online quizes due every week and he does adjust the class to your liking when it comes to classwork. He gets sidetracked on lectures due to it being an election year which means no quiz or work that day. Def would take again.

This class was pretty difficult, but it was worth it! I learn so much interesting fact in that class! There are a lot of lecture but there are interesting! Also, the quiz are pretty difficult but Professor Sunvold gives us a lot of extra credit so I finish with an A easily! If you don't understand something, he will be always there to help you!
He was very disorganized in the start of the class. Plus you would only get 15 minutes for the quizzes which unless you new the textbook word for word then the quizzes would be kind of hard. He assigns a lot written assignments and takes a long time to grade them. I would never ever take him again.
Prof. Sunvold really inspired me. Although it was an only class he really managed to reach me, and I hope other students. I was fearful I wouldn't enjoy the class, because it was U.S. Gov. However, I truly enjoyed the way it was designed. He gives great feedback, and is very accessible and considerate. *It is important to keep up with your work!!!*
I had Professor Sunvold for a 6 week flex class. He assigns a lot of work so getting behind is not an option. Don't confuse "online" with leisure. You WILL need to log in frequently. He will require you to write 4-5 small essays. These are small essays, but they are not easy. You will need to hit every mark to score well on these.
John Sunvold is probably the worst teacher I have had the misfortune of meeting in my academic career. This class was a waste of time. He says he is in the students favor but it is a lie. He thinks hes like the best teacher. Homework is just overwhelming and no point to it. Students steer clear of Professor Sunvold. If you want a good grade.
All of his 20 questions quizzes given weekly are on quizlet. Other than those quizzes there are 2 or 3 mini quizzes based off statistical maps of the US. And then there are three 500 word blogs which are based off what you are learning and a final research paper that is 1000 words. Other than that paper which only took me lazy 2 days, it was easy!!
This class wasn't hard, but your grade is very dependable on the exams. There is also a lot of reading required for this class, and the quizzes usually have very little to do with the reading. The quizzes itself are short and easy as well. The class modules and layout on Canvas isn't as organized as much as my other classes too.
I came to his class, I would come out still thinking about our lecture. He's a great professor, I don't understand where the bad reviews are coming from. This class is totally different from other classes I have experienced. He does his best to make this class feel more like a political convention/discussion rather than an actual college class.
International Politics. The first month of this class seemed like a heavy workload while attending college full time and working full time; however, once you get past the "wave project," the course turns into a weekly quiz and discussion post with a few extra credit points, which I recommend completing. Quizlet provides better studying material.
He unironically uses PragerU as a resource for his class. Friendly at face value but can be very rude to students at times. He only opens modules one week at a time so you don't know what assignments will be next, and he doesn't put them on the syllabus either. Does not grade in a timely manner. Terrible professor in an otherwise interesting class.
The quizzes were fairly easy, and the blogs are graded very heavily, be creative, think outside the box with the blogs and you will do great with them, the research paper at the end is graded the hardest.
He is practically nonexistent in grading and does all or nothing based on grading with no grace period. He offers no optional extra credit and instead makes it mandatory. 92+ is considered an A and is slow on grading.
Professor is a HEAVY ChatGPT user and takes time when it comes to grading. The class is very easy but don't expect him to be present.
