he's a good teacher he wants to see his students do well. He lets you do rewrites however the only thing about his course is that it is soley focused on Vietnam. So it did get boring and kind of annoying...if you stick it through then take his class. Its not too hard to get an A but pretty easy B

This guy is awesome. He is a pretty busy dean but goes out of his way to make time for students who have concerns and needs help. Definitely comes across as the man with the plan.

Get to know Mr.Swensson. He is awsome. you will find out opportunites at school that youve never known. The class is a lot of beneficial learning but no preasure from grades. The perfect ideal class. Become a better writer as well and learn life. One of those teachers you remember for years. just dont wear a **** shirt to class.

He is an excellent teacher that will help you to get an A. Be cooperative, be active and your doing excellent. Few essays and readings here and there. He is always available if you want help. Not to mention, you can get an easy B or A if you edit papers effectively, write your essays, and read. Work is done in groups. He appreciates group work.

Mr. Swensson is an excellent teacher. I say this because :) he is very friendly, communicates well with students, and is very interested in his students' success. He will will help improve your English writing skills, and also spark your confidence and desire to succeed in college. That alone is reason to take a class with Mr. Swensson.

People will either really like him or you really don't. Don't know him personally, but he is pretty blunt. And I like that. He even edit your essay and let you resubmit it. As long if you do all your work, there's NO WAY that you can get lower than a B. So I really don't understand what all these other people are ranting about.

Duno what went wrong with others. That ewrt 2 was online, so not necessarily easy(gottakeepup). He encourages peer editing. We had about two books to read, 2 short paragraphs to write, 2 essays, one research paper and 2 midterms. He gives lots of extra points (for commenting movies etc...), allows you to resubmit and is FLEXIBLE about late papers.

i must admit, i have never had Dean Swensson as a professor but i have the utmost respect for him. He's an AMAZING person. He's seriously jump hoops for students and that's really rare in a professor. I am so Privilege to know this man.

he's easy if you do all the work properly. flexible about late papers and he suggests you to rewrite your essay which is really helpful. a great professor if you want to learn

effective English 1A. The class covers all the basics of composition, as well as teaching students to write dynamic and thorough essays. The assigned literature is also interesting. Swensson is exceptionally helpful and available to students on an individual basis. Constantly goes out of his way to help students.

Very fair, semi easy, tough grader but encourages rewrites. Helps, and does indeed respond to emails. Also the BS about him being mean to girls is just BS, I got a decent grade and I am female. If you don't work, you don't get the grade. Simple.

i'm taking his online class and LOVING IT. Prof Swensson is very nice and helpful. his work really helps you write more effective essays too! i find essays not so hard to write now!! take him!!!

Great for an online alternative to EWRT 1A. Pretty helpful, assignments are plentiful but not too hard, and he's very lenient on late papers which is very helpful, since most of us are taking online classes for a reason. Great grader, great material, great professor.

Exactly what a teacher should be.

Wonderful Professor. EWRT2 course is critical thinking about Vietnam and the Vietnam War. He invites lots of guest speakers to help you see different viewpoints. He encourages students to be proactive with their education (and life).

I really enjoy his lectures. Although it's important to understand that he tells us stories and let us watch films much more than actual lectures. But his assignments are very lenient & clear. If you do bad he will let you do it again and if you don't like the writing topic he lets you do your own. He's trying to help students that will transfer

I have mixed feelings about him. He seems super intimidating and strict on the first day of class, but he's the total opposite. He's SUPER easy. Not too much reading either. He always allows re-writes, which is obviously a plus. However, his class can be a bit dull. His lectures can sometimes get boring. But definitely worth taking!

Mr Swensson is really a great professor! He likes effort and as long as you try your best, he will surely give u decent grade. He is really knowledgeable and has wide connections. I learn a lot from him :D

as long as you write fairly, u get A in his class. I took his online class. he gave few EC. I can turn in late work, but only once/twice.

You would think that an English course focusing on the Vietnam War would get old after a while, but Professor Swensson really shows you how broad the subject actually is. I do feel that my writing improved as a result of this class. Excellent course! If you're not interested in something naturally, make yourself interested! You will be rewarded! :)

idk bout the 2 ppl below me.. i think it's pretty easy, he hands out extra credit. he tells you exactly what he wants. Barely any hw except for a few essays, grades pretty easy in my opinion. 2 of the hw assignments were to draw a picture LOL.. idk why ppl would complain about having alot of hw unless they suck at writing.

He is awesome! He networks all over the world, so any career you want to go into he can help you get a step closer. He does assign a lot of essays but then again this is a writing class. He is understanding of any situation you just need to talk to him one o n one. Take him!

Took him online. He immediately gives you advice on who you can talk to to become your "mentor" once you introduce yourself and tell your future plans. There were some little assignments on Catalyst like drawing a picture and writing a paragraph here and there. Had 3 actual essays besides the paragraphs we had to write. Procrastinated and got an A.

Professor Swensson is an awesome teacher and he is also a retired Army LTC. I have really enjoyed his class especially being a veteran he allowed me to write about my experience in Afghanistan. This was a online class, but he is very understanding. He does give you some opportunity to do extra credit assignments. I highly recommend.

Extremely patient and understanding teacher. He really wants you to do well in the class. Assignments are fairly easy and if you need help or are struggling, he will definitely give you that support and help you get that A. Best teacher on campus hands down

AWESOME TEACHER Definitely take his courses! I have never had a more helpful English teacher, he truly cares about his students. He understands that his students have lives outside the classroom. Being a mother and getting my degree, this is so important. His focus is on helping prepare his students for the real word not pushing assignments.

The easiest A! Mr. Swensson is an awesome person and the class was more focused on laying out practical plans for the future than writing random essays. No exams or quizzes, just two or three opinion-based essays. He cares more about the ideas in your writing than the delivery of them.

Took his online class and I would highly recommend him. He gives GREAT feedback and he's one of those professors who actually wants to see you succeed. You have to work for your grade - No slacking off! He was slightly intimidating at the beginning, but he's ALWAYS there whenever you need help. Loved this class and would take him again if I could!

Professor Swensson is very inspirational, insightful, and enlightening. His lessons, parables, and anecdotes teach you more than how to improve your writing skills. He challenges you to improve yourself so that you can improve your community. His worldly experience, passion for teaching, and approachability make students respect him immediately.

John is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had at De Anza and I think that speaks volumes for it being an online class. He really cares for his students and wants them to have a clear idea of their future so they can succeed. He knows we have lives outside of class so he doesn't assign too much work. Take John and you will not regret it.

I took this class online in the summer. We pretty much had to read, then write essays. It was straightforward and simple. We had to have another student edit our essays and there was a group assignment. He gave extra if we came to the optional meetings. He offers good commentary and he's really passionate about the Vietnam War.

Professor Swensson is one of my favorite professors I've taken at De Anza. Seems tough at first but is very caring and helpful towards his students. There isn't much work and assignments are relatively easy if you pay attention and attend class. Extremely simple writing assignments and gives great advice when it comes to writing. Also very funny!!

Basically, the final project (what matters the most) is creating a ten year life plan for yourself. The things you learn in that class will benefit you. He's very lenient, but also knows what he wants. A great class to take if you need to deal with more difficult classes.

Really straight forward, but if you really want to understand something you didn't get the first he explained you, stay back a few minutes and ask again. He doesn't mind talking to students after class. Really caring and really wants you to succeed but you MUST ask him questions! He's a bit lenient on deadlines, but don't make it a habit.

Not too much work, he spaces it out so you have can complete the bigger papers in smaller segments, and in the end all you have to do is add them all together. Super easy grader, very chill. Ends class early all the time. Attendance is mandatory though, don't skip more than 2 classes and you'll be fine.

He wants you to get a good grade and succeed. He will ask questions about your interest and will give you recommendations. Assignments aren't hard but if you procrastinate you'll feel overwhelmed. Will let you revise and turn in work for a better grade.

He's chill, very caring and responsive. The assignments are simple and straightforward as long as you put effort theirs no reason you shouldn't get an A. He also gives good life and career advice if you ask him. I'd take him again 100%.

Writing assignments are short and easy. You will have to write at least 2-3 papers. Best teacher!

The whole class is about peer review. Extra credit just for attending to the zoom lecture. Textbook is not mandatory but really helpful. Easy A if you do the work.

Great professor - wants to help his students achieve their goals. I was anxious going into his class about grading, but he is very lenient. About 8 papers total for this class, each requires a peer editor. Would highly recommend

Great and caring professor. Wants the best for his students, in and out of his class. If you need anything, he makes himself available via zoom, phone, or email. Easy A, papers are straightforward and he grades easily as well

Easy A. All his papers require a peer-editor, but overall it helps in the long run. Lots of essays but they are all pretty short and simple. Puts a heavier focus on the content you provide rather than form. You won't really learn how to write a "college-level" essay since he just prefers for you to write in the way he wants.

There was mainly just a paper every couple weeks. This class mainly focuses on vietnamese history/the vietnam war so don't take this class if you are uninterested in those topics. He gives a lot of feedback and grades pretty much by the day after. I think there were about two or three books we had to read, again based on viet stuff.

Do what he said you will get A. Attend every class. Really kind professor. Take this class when you are first year. He can help you with transfer.

The professor is really funny and engaging even though I had a really early morning with him. He took us to Stanford even though he didn't have to!! He gives good grades and it is all about participation. However, he also judges extra tiny details so make sure that it is perfect (I mean stuff like punctuation).

This professoer's used to teach very nicely even if students are a week in a language. His ability to involve and update everyone was so good and trying to help like myself.

Interesting teacher. Kinda a difficult grader- I'd get my paper graded and there wouldn't be anything wrong but still would never get 100% even though he liked me and I did well. His assignments are pretty easy. There's some readings but tbh you don't really have to, I didn't read much and still ended with an A. Definitely helpful as a professor.

Favorite professor so far. He went above and beyond in helping his students. I am a native English speaker, but some of my ESL classmates got extra help from him. Super flexible with asking for an extension, but you must contact him ahead. He allowed Ai for grammar/outlines as long as you cite properly and can explain it. Highly recommend for all.

Allows AI. don't cheat, his work is quite easy and accommodating. Usually 1 assignment per week, sometimes a few more. Class prepares you for future: final is a 10 year life plan (what it sounds like). Responds to your work pretty well. Will threaten to drop you if you miss too many assignments, don't turn in on time etc. goes out of way for you.
