great teacher...love the accent
No Comments
HE IS A REALLY NICE TEACHER, BUT SOMETIMES HIS ACCENT INTERFERES WITH HIS TEACHING, MUST GO TO HIS CLASS, OR YOU WILL FAIL HIS TESTS, TESTS ARE BASED OFF THINGS THAT HE SHOWS ON THE BOARD, YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER SILLY DRAWINGS AND REPLICATE THEM ON THE TEST, HE DOESN'T REALLY WANT TO HELP YOU EITHER!!
dr. tate is the best! gives excellent notes in class b/c writes everything on the board. makes everything easy to understand. has quizes once a week, which is very helpful. also post quiz and test studyguides, and homework keys on his webpage! always there to help! hes awesome!
Is a good teacher but sometimes his test can be a little difficult. If you are a person that likes good teaching and likes to do a lot of studying this is the teacher for you.
Dr. Tate is awesome!!!! He is straight forward with his tests. He is very helpful and is always available to explain things.
Really a great prof. I definately enjoyed the class. It will require work on your part to pass but he provides everything that u need. Highly recommend
He is definitely a hottie. I know so many who think so too. Plus, he's super helpful!!
Good teacher. Fun accent makes him easier to listen to. He loves the subjest and is willing to help out students with study sessions and tutoring.
he's a hottie and a great instructor also!
Great instructor! Very helpful. Tests are easy. Goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Highly recommended.

Tests off the notes, and explains everything he's writing on the board.
Dr. Tate is awesome! He is always there to help you out when you need clarity or advice. You should absolutely take this teacher!!!!
He is my most favorite professor so far.
Dr. Tate is BEST chem prof. in the world!!! He made Chemistry fun for me and when I needed extra clarity he was always willing to help and he made me understand everything a lot better. I just hope more Professors were like Dr. Tate!!!
Dr. Tate is one of the best professors I have ever had. He has always had time for me when I needed extra clarification. He doesn't ridicule and he treats you with the utmost respect. Dr. Tate is simply the best chemistry teacher CSUSB has to offer.
Whoever has said he's hot must like old guys. He's not exactly young... He's a great teacher though, and interesting and he loves what he teachs which makes it more interesting. Just study for the tests and you'll do fine. Dont JUST use the practice tests because only a small fraction of them are on the test.
really nice, really cute, reminds me of harry potter, really good methods in 215 but lost his touch for 216, i recomend taking him for 215 not 216, gives quizs and hw but it helps with your over all grade
Dr.Tate was my best professor this quarter! he is very helpful and not too hard. i would take him! quizzes and homework are easy points to bring up your grade!
Great teacher! Do the homework and pay attention to sample tests and quizzes he puts up on his blackboard website, and you do well. Chemistry is not an easy subject to start with, but this teacher does a great job in breaking it down as much as possible.
A bit of an odd English duck, but he is okay. For the lab he is pretty easy going (unlike Mink -ouch!) His lectures are fine, but he doesn't explain things very clearly all the time. I'd give him a 8/10.
He's a wonderful teacher who really wants you to learn the material. He goes out of his way and even sets up study sessions prior to each test to make sure you have things down. I really recommend him.
Is not clear with assignments. posts things at the last minute. Doesn't stick to what he says he will do.
good teacher, very helpful when asked
Good Instructor. Posts a lot of his stuff on blackboard which is a good thing, and his tests are fairly easy. just study his study guides and powerpoints and you should be good.
Tate is an awesome teacher! He is so helpful. His lectures are very clear and his study sessions are very useful. He doesn't judge when you have trouble understanding easy concepts (unlike Mink who scoffs at you). His exams are not that hard, and he drops the lowest quiz if it helps you. I'm getting him next quarter because he's that awesome!
Dr. Tate is so nice and very helpful. He wants his students to do well!! He is great in lab, but his exams are harder than the examples he gives during the quater. But overall he is GREAT!!
I took Dr. Tate for 215, and now 216. He is always there when you need help, whether it be through emailing or office hours. Very pleasant to listen to, and has a wonderful personality. Also pleasant on the eye. Being a Bio major, this Professor makes me want to change my major from Bio to Chem!! He is just wonderful.
Very Excellent teacher. I have very little interest in chemistry, and he makes it very fun to learn
I LOVE TATE! he is so funny, and he is such a good chem professor. I recommend him completely...just be sure that if you dont understand something ASK HIM dont be scared go to office hours email anything he will help you out with material you dont get!
Wonderful instructor! Do not hesitate to ask questions -- he's happy to answer and won't make you feel like an idiot for asking. Lecture is worth every second -- useful examples. I've tried most general chem teachers -- he's the best!
He is very nice during offices hours. Very nice overall. Good professor overall, you actually learn because he can teach...
Best class I have ever taken. Not easy AT ALL, but he makes sure that everyone works for their grade. I miss this class so much! He makes sure you understand the concepts and is extremely helpful and easy to talk to.
Very easy going and helpful. Teaches well. Work does matter so do it!
Greatest professor! Answers everything! Definitely take his class! Funny and witty! Knows what he's teaching and loves it! Plus you gotta love his hot accent! ;)
This class is harder than 215, but by putting in the effort and doing the work it's not so bad. Tate is a good prof. and he makes sure to explain everything as best as he can. Also, if absolutely necessary he will let you turn assignments in late.
really great professor! he was so nice and helpful! very approachable. he made difficult material much more easier to understand. you can tell he went out of his way to help his students. i loved his class! definitely take him if you can for both chem 215 and 216.
I am in his Summer Class (5 weeks long) and he is great. I have never had a professor with such a great teaching technique. He is clear, easy to get a long with, and extremely helpful! When you ask questions he takes his time and makes sure you understand without making you feel dumb for asking. Dr. Tate is the best!!
Dr. Tate is the best professor I've had so far. He makes the class fun as well as entertaining. Besides, one just has to love his accent! ;)
In the beginning, I was dreading on taking General Chem, but Dr. Tate changed my view on the subject completely. He is extremely helpful, nice, and patient. He assigns homework and quizzes which helps with your overall grade. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand. I highly recommend taking both Chem 215 and 216 with Dr. Tate.
I cannot say enough to recommend Dr. Tate. If you attend lecture and study your notes, you have all of the info needed to do well in his class. He follows the textbook so reading it is good suplemental information. He will make himself available at almost any time if you need additional help (even his labs!). TAKE HIM, but be prepared work!
Dr. Tate is amazing. His way of teaching makes a hard subject seem easy. He is very clear and explains things in detail. Could not have got an A with any other teacher. He is very helpful and above all other chemistry teachers. Will even help with lab questions.
Dr. Tate is very concise, clear, and organized. Lectures are interesting, homework is relevant. Grades fairly.
I had him for CHEM 100 for lab, and fell in love with his teaching ability. He is a very sweet professor, and is always there to help you. He'll answer all of your questions, and try to clarify it to you so you can understand it easier. If you took Chemistry in highschool, this class should be easy for your.
DR. TATE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR, according to me that is! I enjoyed Dr. Tate's classes - they were interesting, clear and concepts were made easy. Although there are many assignments and lab reports and quizzes, Dr. Tate provides many opportunities to improve your grade. Dr. Tate made me actually like chemistry!!
Dr Tate is a really great professor. He is very clear and precise and made the class as enjoyable as one could. many opportunities to improve/maintain your grade. Sample quizzes and exams were always spot on so it made studying very easy. always willing to help and very encouraging. I wish he could teach every chemistry class i need :(
A really good professor. He is always willing to help and tries to make sure you understand the material. His samples of quizzes/midterms/final aren't the best. Find students who have taken the class before and study their tests cause he always pull questions from past midterms. He's a kind person and professor. Just make sure to study a lot!
Dr. Tate is one of the BEST professors I've ever had! He is super helpful, has a great sense of humor, (the coolest accent), and really makes learning Chemistry enjoyable. He holds study session before exams, posts sample quizzestests online, and is truly there for the students! I would highly recommend taking any of his classes!
Extremely helpful and friendly, the lectures lack a bit of content especially considering the difficulty of the material. Make sure you do the homework and practice doing multiple problems of each type.
Dr. Tate is a great chemistry professor. He is clear in his lectures and will not hesitate to clarify further if asked. There are no surprises in his class as long as you study hard and pay a fair amount of attention in lecture. Overall, Dr. Tate is more than willing to help you pass the class if you're struggling to get by.
Dr. Tate is the most helpful chemistry teacher I had. He is very helpful, if you ask for help. He makes the material very easy to understand and his exams are similar to his practice exams!!!Really recommend!
He is a very understanding professor and will give extensions on due dates. His tests can be difficult but he grades on a small curve that will increase your grade usually by 5-8 %.
Very good, works with students so they understand the content. Not a comedian, but has his moments. 1010 Would pick him again.
I took him in summer and the classes went by fast. John Tate is a really great professor. He is very approachable and he is there for you when you need him.
Tate was an amazing professor! Very excited about the subject and invested in helping you learn
Great professor! Took him in the summer, class went by fast, but he still managed to make hard concepts seem easy! He gives homework and one typed essay. A lot of studying is obviously essential to passing!
He's one of my favorite professors hands-down. He is more than willing to stay after class or discuss material that you don't understand during office hours. Extremely helpful. Gives study guides for all tests and even some quizzes.
The subject wasn't easy but Professor Tate makes it easy for us to understand the lectures. As long as you're paying attention and doing the labs, homework, attending all discussions, and working on the study guide you will do very well. If you need help don't hesitate to visit his office hours. Overall, one of the best professors around.
Easy to understand even w. british accent. skips alot of steps when solving problems so ask questions, he is happy to explain. very generous w. extra credit. weekly quizzes but gives as much help as he can right to prepare his students. easy to talk to. this class is difficult so dont blame him, you have to put in a good amount of work
Best chem professor I've ever had! Explains everything clearly and gives lots of examples. The exams are similar to the homework , the examples given in class, and the study guide so if you get the problems, then it should be (at least) an easy B
He is willing to help anyone who needs it. His office hours are amazing, he is really approachable and takes his time answering questions. He is one of the best chem professors on campus.
Prof tate is really cool. But don't think you'll get a good grade without work. If you put in D level work, you'll get a D in the class. Don't slack off, and you'll be fine. Go to his office hours if you have questions, he's really nice. I didn't do so well on the midterms, but i killed the final, and I got a B. I really studied for it though.
Tate is a really good professor and he cares about his students. His exams could be quite tricky but if you practice different ways of solving each problem then you should do well on the exams. He offers extra credit through poll everywhere. He is very flexible with his office ours and is gladly to help.
he is amazing! he will spend so much time helping students outside of class just because he's a great person. i wouldn't say his class is an easy A but you can defiantly get an A if you actually tried. i hardly tried and got a B. if i can take his class all over again i would!!
He was a really great instructor. The material can get tough so it is a class you will have to actually put work into but Tate makes the class bearable. He explains ideas very well and if you ever don't understand something, he is always there to help. He never makes you feel stupid for not knowing or understanding something.
Tate is a great professor! Of course chemistry is a tough topic, so effort is required. Tate loves what he does so he is always willing to help!
Professor Tate is an awesome professor! He is caring and answers any questions that you have. He gives his time to you and is very respectable and is never boring. He makes every lecture interesting.
It's a pretty easy class. The teacher is super helpful and is always available. HE WANTS YOU TO PASS.
Dr. Tate is the reason I passed the class. Chemistry can be a tough subject, but with the help of Dr. Tate, it seems like an easy class. Would definitely take again.
Chemistry is a hard subject but with Dr. Tate, chemistry is understandable. Great professor and wants you to pass.
Dr. Tate is a great professor. Even though the lectures are long and at times difficult to understand, he really does try to make sure everyone has a fair chance at passing the class. He gives a lot of examples of the types of questions that will be on exams and works through them with you.
Professor Tate is an amazing professor. I took this class in the summer and thought it was going to end my life. Dont get me wrong, it was very fast pace and took over my summer, but professor tate made it worth it. He is a very good instructor and makes sure you understand the concepts, he is very straight forward. VERY fair grader. TAKE TATE!!!
Amazing professor. He wants his students to do well and makes himself available during office hours for his students as much as possible. Took him over summer so it was a fast paced class but he lectures very well. Definitely recommend taking Tate! He's the best!!
He is very understanding
Chem 215 is an easy class if you STUDY. GO to LAB, DISCUSSION, and LECTURE. Retain all of the information in class so that you can just review and study for at least 3 days prior the midterms and Study at least 5 days before the final. Make sure to study using the sample tests and final! The HW is pretty easy JUST DO IT! Taking Dr. Tate for 216!
Very nice, knows what he is doing. Likes to make jokes if he makes a mistake. Will help you if you ask. Requires a lot of reading. He goes over homework in lecture which is it mandatory. Would recommend
Great professor. Hope to work with him again soon.
There's 2 midterms & one final. Even if you do terrible on all 3, if you get an A in your lab & turn in all the quizzes & participate in poll everywhere (extra credit) you should get at least a C. I would recommend to take him for discussion & lecture if you can. Also be prepared to study a lot. I lowkey cried several times
I had Prof. Tate for Chem 216 Lab. Awesome instructor and always willing to help outside of class. Even though I didn't have him for lecture, he was always willing to explain concepts that I needed help with. He is a bit picky with grading and marks off points here and there but if you talk to him he will let you know exactly what he wants/expects.
Tate is a great professor. I took him over the summer for 215. While it was a tough experience, it is manageable. Studying every day is crucial. If you do poorly on the 2 midterms, make sure to study hard for the final. The final is easier than the 2 midterms imo. Make sure you get the "best" lab prof because that will make or break your grade.
Took over the summer and it was so much information, it started to get overwhelming. However, Dr. Tate will literally make sure that everyone gets the material, and gives you more than one chance to make up work and get a better grade. Hard subject, but this professor makes it easy. Also lab is easy, just write a short report and answer questions.
Even though attendance is not required but PLEASE ATTEND THE CLASS!! Thats how youre gonna pass. Theres 3 exams, they are quite tricky, but nothing surprising. If you didnt do so well on the exams but did all the homework and attend the labs, youll be fine!
John Tate is truly an angel! Chem 215 is a hard course, but he makes it a little more easy to understand. Missing maybe one or two classes is okay but if you never show up, don't expect to pass! He gives a little bit of extra credit but you have to work for it! He is super easy to talk to. Go to his office hours!
Chem isn't my strong point but Tate made this class attainable to pass. He gives you exams, quizzes, homework and attendance point which all benefits students if they aren't great test takers to balance out points in another way. You still have to study but his exams are fair. Go to office hours for help hes helpful and wont make you feel awkward
For my Upper Division Chem dudes take dr tate! His topics classes are great and he really cares about what he teaches. Hes willing to work with you and hes super easy to talk to. 576 is hard but theres a huge curve. Show up to class and youll do great! Homework is short and only about 5 assignments, midterm, and final.
Truthfully, you need to go to class to understand the concepts. It's a little harder to learn just by yourself, so it help to (at least for the most part) pay attention in class, stay after class and confirm what you learned, and even visit him during his office hours. He's SUPER helpful and cares more about you understanding than your grade.
He he gives great lectures, with many examples. He also provides multiple study guides, similar to the test. He also is very sweet, and caring.
Dr. Tate is one of the best professors I have taken. He is very understanding and will answer any questions you have even if they're dumb ones. He wants you to pass but that's if he notices you are trying hard. Homework is very useful for the tests so it's important to do it.
I took this class during the summer session, and it was fairly enjoyable. Prof. Tate stated he has not taught this class in over 10 years, which may or may not be a good thing, but he was a nice professor. We only had two exams, poll questions, a crossword puzzle, two online quizzes, and a report, which were all easy, just study his material!
Dr. Tate is one of the best professors youll meet he cares about your grade and is always willing to help. Never be shy to ask questions he answers so politely and office hours are the best hell make sure you understand material when you leave pure greatness. Take him if you have the opportunity.
I took chem 216 online due to the pandemic and I was very scared because chem online just sounds awful but Tate changed my mind! He is so amazing! He wants everyone to pass! I took Mink for 215 and passed with a C+ so I thought I couldn't pass 216 because I was not smart enough but here I am passing 216 an A! Tate truly cares about his students!
Tate is the best professor I have ever had . He truly cares about his students and makes sure that he does his best for them to pass. If you need help he is always available and willing to work with you and your schedule. For exams he gives you a study guide, 2 review sessions, and example quizzes/exams. Take Tate if you ever get the opportunity!
Tate has been extremely helpful compared to the other instructors. Although I wasn't in his lab class specifically, he allowed students from other classes to ask him for help and give feedback. If you have the option to have him as your lab professor, take it. He's very clear with advice and again, gives feedback that is very helpful. Good luck!
Professor Tate is a great professor! He is always willing to help his students.
Hands down the best Chem professor in CSUSB. Very dedicated to his subject, classes and his students. Never gets annoyed when people ask him questions, instead he tries to explain in different ways Exams are not the easiest but if you study you can get at least a B. What is he says in class is what you get on the exam paper so pay attention.
I really liked him! I will always recommend him to anyone. He never took attendance and he also had a live Zoom if you wanted to join virtually. Such a generous grader. The only con is his lectures weren't too beneficial for my learning because the slideshows were just pictures and I'd zone out. His discussion section is where I learned the most.
Professor Tate is a really good professor ! I personally struggled with this subject but he was always super helpful and literally the most generous grader if he truly sees you are putting in your best effort. Very accesible during office hours, discussion. Provides study guides, previous tests, reviews. Harder to fail than to pass. Take him!
If you have the chance, to take professor Tate for Chemistry, please do ! He's an amazing professor and even though the class is mainly lectures, he incorporates practice problems and gives you opportunities to ask questions and understand the material. He also is very patient and understanding if you are making the effort !
great professor
Professor Tate is very caring. He gives you multiple opportunities to succeed in his class. 2200 was a lot harder than 2100 for me but he gave us study guides, practice test, examples, test corrections, and so much more. This class demands a lot of time from you so if you just study and really try to understand the materials, you should be fine.
Professor Tate is honestly a great teacher, he really cares about his students. He makes sure you understand the material and he gives out clear study guide and also past exams for you to practice on. He does a review the night before an exam to answer any questions. He is overall amazing
He is very passionate about chemistry. He definitely knows the subject matter and wants everyone to succeed in his class. His office hours are always open to any student.
He offers lectures over zoom which is helpful. He doesn't grade the homework harsh, and the homework is just like the exams so they work great for study material. The lecturing style is definitely different, sometimes it's hard to know what is important. You basically need a tablet or Ipad to take notes on.
Albeit chemistry isn't my strong suit, I feel this class to be harder than it should've been. A majority of points is allocated towards the 3 midterms and the final. I felt strong in equation solving from discussions, but when it came to multiple-choice questions, it was textbook-dependent. Lectures were recorded and posted.
Professor Tate is the kindest professor I've had so far, he really care about his students. His lectures are easy and is very easy to contact outside of class, he makes learning chemistry so easy. I was retaking chemistry and I wish I had taken it with Professor Tate sooner.
