He is a great professor. He is very interesting and his exams are challenging but pretty well written if you study enough. But there is A LOT of reading. 4 books/long articles worth. But the class is fascinating.
Interesting class. 4 Midterms, almost solely based on the reading (and there's a lot of it) but as long as you follow the reading study guide question for question you should have absolutely no problems in the class.
ok professor, doesn't teach that much stuff to students, more like self learning in his class
Go to class and read. Thats all there is to his class. All multiple choice and straight forward. Easy going and interesting lectures. Not a bad choice for upper division GE
interesting class, john is a little dry in his presentations but knows his stuff!
He makes the course very straight forward and hits upon very pertinent and interesting topics. Attend lecture, read, and study from his study guides, and you will have no problems.
Good guy; wears goofy hats
Interesting lectures for an 8am class and he shows good documentaries. But beware-Some exam questions are very tricky. 4 MC exams, each approx- 70% from reading, 30% from lectures.
take as many classes you can with him. He doesn't beat around the bush with boring lectures. He's to the point.
If you don't mind listening to a Prof who thinks a great deal of himself and what he thinks he knows, you will enjoy this class. Do the reading and go to lecture because he does ask questions from lecture. GOOD LUCK
Great Professor and Class! Quite a bit of readings though. If you go to the study sessions with his TA's, they help narrow down what to study. Highly reccommend this class!
Great teacher. Knows his stuff, and very well. Great sense of humor. And is very easy. Best teacher I've had in Davis, along with David Osleger, Norma Lopez-Burton and Virginia Creveling
This guy is awesome! He makes class fun and interesting, trys to relate topics to current events. His tests are MC and easy. Just go to class and do the study guides and you will be fine. I highly reccommend him. Oh yeah, he's funny, too!
very smart, very nice. to the point. tests are easy as long as you do the reading. everything is straight from the book or lectures. a good deal of reading but interesting. if i had to take another 8am id take it with him
This class is so easy and interesting. Just study the review questions he gives to you. His test questions come the review questions, a little bit from lecture notes, and several from films. He showed great films during class. Easy A/B.
Very Liberal and can't keep his political opinions to himself. Told people in our class that people who drive SUV's are terrorists. Just another academic elitist.
This guy RAMBLES like crazy. He talks about his opinions and his SUV. He doesn't plan lectures, he just shows movies. He was also late for a final exam. He holds review sessions that are totally irrelevant to the exam. Review guides are hard and too detailed (almost 70-80 questions per guide) Boring
Interesting material. His study guides are helpful, but don't rely solely on that... go over lecture notes before the exams. He's a cool guy... verrrry Liberal.
An overall awesome teacher. Made four-hour lectures interesting. His tests are STRAIGHT off the study guide, so very easy. He is an exceptionally clear lecturer, always provides examples, very intelligent, and has a good personality too. An easy and interesting A!
one of the better profs at davis for cmn. to get an A, just do the study guides. very nice and easy to approach. a little liberal, but a very interesting lecturer.
His tests are impossible. One mid term he gave us an outline of what he said would be on the test, and basically he tricked us cuz none of it was. No curve. Highest grade was a 91, most people got Ds. I got a C+.
i went to class and did the reading and went over the study guide and i pulled a C. other people that did nothing got better grades on exams! I guess u just need to know how to take his exams (they were tricky). He is a good lecturer and the class was fun and interesting.
SO HARD SO BORING SO MEAN
study the guides, attend lecture and answer all the questions... you will do fine
Very hard class. Do not slackoff just because someone told you its easy. The test are very very hard.
Theobold put me to sleep every morning. He rambles on about nothing and gives tons of reading. He is very unflexable and won't go out of his way to help you with any questions outside of class.
Very intelligent professor! Talks a bit fast at times. He is interesting, but it would help if the class was not at 8 am. Use the study guides, answer all the questions, and do all of the reading, you should be able to pass the tests.
his tests are straight from his study guides. read over lectures and do study guide and you can't get less than a B. i prepare like the morning of or day before and got Bs and As on all the tests after doing absolutely nothing the rest of the time.
He likes to hear himself talk!!! The lectures only slightly suplement the readings, and the readings are 70% of the test material. Do the study questions and you'll be fine.
All exams. 3 or 4 of em. Mult. choice, 50 q's, 30 are straight forward, 10 you can narrow down to 2 answers, 10 are vague as hell and is all luck. Gives a couple extra credits per quarter. 1 point above average is set as a B-. Easy to get B's. Do study guide and go to lecture. If you want an A, pray to your God or Gods. Atheists are out of luck.
One of the more easier classes I'll take @ UCD. The tests are derived from the study guides which come from the reading (which was easy & informative). He covers some of the more important stuff in lecture & has videos to show as well. Some videos can be disturbing though.
He's an awesome teacher, and his subject/reading material is very interesting and always current.
His lectures are very interesting, but you can miss every one and still pull a decent grade if you do a little reading. I attended out of enjoyment. Highly recommended.
lectures can be dry, and he sometimes injected his own political bias into his commentary (the class was on media bias), but overall he was a good teacher.
Good classes. Interesting subject material. He does sometimes throw in his viewpoint, but what teacher doesn't? It always comes through one way or another, either in lecture or chosen material. Theobald always has interesting, relevant reading material. I thought his classes were great. Changed the way I view media and our society.
Great Professor! Lectures are interesting and relavent. you learn a lot!! Great class, Theobald rocks!

Lectures had there boring moments; but he is a good teacher overall. Plus his tests were REALLY easy
He is a great professor. I missed a whole bunch of classes but still got a decent grade (classical notes). His lectures can get boring, but he always cuts class short. Most test questions are fair some get pretty tricky though all questions are multiple choice.
FRS: Science and the News. Class was fun and interesting.
Very interesting way of teaching communications. Makes really relevant and fun off topic ideas and then weaves them back to the goal at hand. Handles everything politically correct but not to the annoying extent. Love his lectures, and even more than he ends them early by 10 to 20 minutes on occassion.
Theobald is an awesome communications teacher. He knows his material and his test are straight forward if you do the readings. I have taken a few cmn teachers and he is one of the best at ucd, in my opinon. He needs to teach more classes so college life will be more enjoyable.
he is the most boring lecturer ever! i don't see why people think he's interesting... his tests are based on book readings which are long and boring. I thought it was easy but apparently i ended up getting a freekin C in his class..
I never studied lecture notes and still did well...he will curve if need be. Lecture wasnt very long, because there were always movies to be watched, and the overwhelmingly majority of tests come from reading and movies-the reading is a must!
Lectures are BORING!! The readings are dreadful, some are just plain boring. He isnt too hard when it comes to the midterms, but you do need to attend lecture and read the readings. Pay attention to the movies also. But, he does seen like an aproachable individual. Cracks jokes once in a while, but class is still boring.
Yeah, his lectures were pretty damn boring. It was an OK, somewhat interesting class. It's just really hard to stay awake in a two hour class that starts at 8am. Just do the study guide, attend ALL lectures and you should do fine. Sadly, I got a C+ in his class. I could of done better.
I heard a lot good comment about Theobald before i take him. They are wrong, lectures are super boring and long. His tests are not that easy. you can answer 30 of them in no time but the other 20 require serious studying and attend every lectures. I dont like his class but he is still easier than other cmn teacher except for creveling!
i think he's been teaching too long and teaching to him has become something overly rehearsed. he's boring. not interesting at all. and the material is boring too. i knew i should've kept with creveling.
Lectures are boring and too long. Tests are fair if you do the study guides and read the material.
Grow up people! Theobald is an incredible lecturer, especially when compared to his counterparts in the comm dept. The ideas that he presents in class, along with the readings, were refreshing to ... not at all boring! As long as you do the study guide, you can still get a great grade... and you just might learn something too!
Tests were fair if you went to lecture, took notes on both the videos and other stuff. Do the study guides that he provides. However 4 hour lectures are a little too long.
Theobald is the best in the Comm Dept. He presents interesting material that chllenges the way you think, and he is very SEXY!
Some ppl like him and others don't, I did not. When he lectures I can't seem to find the beg to the end. He put bulliets on the board but if you can't keep up with his semi-mono tone you'll get lost. His test are ok I suppose. He's study guides are long and time consuming. Don't take two of his classes at a time.
this guy is one of the greatest charismatic professors around. Just listen in lecture, keep up with the simple readings and do the study guide, and you will come out fine. The presentations help your grade a lot.
My third class with Theobald and he is still awesome, interesting, and a fair grader. Take him, you won't regret it!
taking him for 101 this quarter because i like his way of preparing you for the test. everything is in his lecture notes and study guide--do it and you're fine
What you have is a neat bullet point outline lecture by a man who likes to hear himself talk. The questions on the exams are deliberately tricky or vague. A couple times he's given us free points for typos, etc., but there were plenty debatable questions. I didn't care enough to argue or visit his office hours. Damn the bell curves and scantrons.
A great professor, it's obvious he cares about his students and can relate to them easily. Just go to his classes and you should easily earn an A or a B. A wonderful professor.
easy class. lectures are not very interesting. the study guides give all answers. shows a few films, questions from films are on tests. go to class, do study guides.
Very easy if you attend class and answer his possibly lengthy study guide questions. Exams come quickly (since there is four midterms, no cumulative final). However, he curves fairly and is an easy "A" or "B" if you follow my suggestions above. Very approachable with questions or comments.
This guys has shown pure greatness once again, there isn't once class, that I have taken with theobald that hasn't been great. Make sure you fill out the study guide though..or you will be lost on the test.
eh, he's okay. boring at times but pretty informative.
He's great: he's very approachable, clear in his expectations, and gives interesting anecdotes and examples. If you want to do well, you must come to class and fill out the study guides. He's genuinely interested in his students and what they have to say. He also always gives credit to other people's ideas that he uses in lecture.
Theobald is a great professor. This class has 4 tests, he gives out a study guide. He is hillarious to listen to and he makes class fun. Take this class! Guaranteed pass
I think some ppl dont like theobalds style, but i personally looove it! he just walks in w/his superfood and starts talking in a way that feels like ur having a conversation. relaxed, yet very cohesive and fluid lectures w/ occassional bullets and main ideas on the board. very interesting material. do the study guides and u'll be fine!
He is a fairly nice man. Freshman seminar was dull, but it was not hard to get a "pass". All we did was watch movies and be bored to death about "peak oil".
He is hard and I def wouldn't take 2 of his classes simultaneously. You have to apply yourself, study, do the study guides and go to class, but it's not impossible to get a good grade. He also grades [almost all] exams on a curve. I'm taking him next quarter again for another class. Fascinating, smart, approachable - & I think he's hot! :)
I find the material interesting, but his lecturing style is stale and boring. Seems like a nice guy but he's just so dull. Fallen asleep in that class like 4 times and I'm only halfway through the class. I mean, he's alright but I don't look forward to his classes. the only time I'm interested is when he plays movies. Interesting stuff, boring guy.
This is one of my favorite professors at Davis. I have always looked forward to his lectures. I'm taking as many classes by him as I can. He makes you try to think differently. Extraordinarily intelligent man. Take his study guides seriously.
This guy is an ok professor. However he really pushes his own agenda on you and it's pretty clear that he is not open to other ideas. He speaks very well but to the point where you can not really ask questions or interject so it feels it is patronizing. If you do extra credit and he dosn't like it he won't give it to you either.
I did the extra credit in his class but since I left 2 minutes early one day he didn't give me the extra credit. He did this to about 15 other students also. I got a good grade in his class but he never stated the terms of the extra credit so I would not take one of his classes.
I got a C- in the class and I am still giving this guy a great rating. Raises extremely interesting, relevant, and current topics during class discussions. As an engineering student, I just didn't have the time necessary to devote to studying to get a good grade. Midterms and final aren't straight forward. With normal studying, a B is attainable.
Seriously, just don't take is classes. I feel like I'm going to fall asleep as soon as he starts talking. I think he just wakes up in the morning and is like..hmm thats an interesting idea, I'm going to talk about that in class today. Tests are all multiple choice but are extremely difficult. You need to study your ass off!
took his fresh sem abt collapse. easy. basically just watch movies, and listen to him babel on. one group pres and one essay. both super easy. dont really need to pay attention. if need 2 unit filler, good course for it!
This is one of the best professors in Davis. If you don't want to read your reader and fill out the study guide then don't bother taking the class. If you want to learn and be entertained by an extremely good looking man who is willing to step out of the box and teach you practical stuff... TAKE THIS CLASS. Also he will do anything for his students
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. i have never did this bad in any communication classes but his. too tricky.
Professor Theobald is a good teacher. I had taken both CMN 140 & 146 with him. He is very friendly and helpful. His classes are not easy but he offers extra credit which help me earn good grades. His exams can be too hard or too easy. His first exam is usually the hardest. Study hard and do all the extra credit and you should pass!
Theobald is a nice guy and has interesting lectures about 75% of the time. I don't really feel like I learned much after completing the class but it was still interesting. The 4 midterms are tricky, but as long as you read, you won't have problems.
Not helpful at all in terms of exam advice. Overall, a nice guy. Lectures a bit boring
Study guides extremely helpful for tests. Lectures are understandable and follow a logical format. He is nice and seems to like what he teaches. Understand what you read and make notes during lectures even of videos shown in class.
Interesting class, comfortable lecture style. Tests are heavily based in readings, but he provides comprehensive study guides. With a few hours of studying, and regular attendance, you can easily get an A.
Good class. Theobald is a great lecturer and keeps the 3-4 hours interesting. He tends to focus on the media as it related to his interests like energy and overpopulation. Your whole grade is three 50 question multiple-choice tests based mostly on the reading. Answer all questions in the study guide and pay serious attention to it ...
Very laid back style of teaching. The class doesn't have much discussion, primarily lecture. The exams are based on the readings and class notes. He's not tricky on the exams, but does ask specific questions. Interesting class in terms of understanding the chaos that is happening in the world.
His exams are based on reading! lectures are mainly used for showing movies. Exams are tricky, but he curves!
His tests are based on a textbook for the first midterm and for the second midterm and final it is based off of a reader. Be careful, about half of the test is from lecture notes. He definitely shows passion for the subject.
First 1/3 of the class was the most difficult for me because it focused on politics, but after that the topic switched to campaigns involving environmental issues, which I liked. Attend lecture, remember the titles of the videos he shows in class, do the study guides, and ask questions during his pre-exam review sessions.
Extremely laid back, funny, and very knowledgeable on the media and his favorite subject, peak oil. Go to lecture (mostly movies anyway) and do the readings and study guides, and you'll be fine.
He is hands down the best Communication professor at Davis. You do have to go to class and there is a lot of work but he makes it as interesting as possible. He is extremely clear and so are his exams. If I could take all my CMN classes with him I would.
Intersting fellow. His class is pretty different then any other CMN class I took before. He implements a lot for video into his lecture to explain the material. Gives clear lectures and helpful study guides. Got an A!
Interesting professor....he uses a lot of videos in his lecture to discuss the concepts he is explaining. Liked him a lot. Just make sure you dedicate enough time to study. Got an A!
what an amazing professor. i've taken all of his classes. He is not a typical 'by the book' professor; you have to attend class to get anything higher than a C. he's passionate, which turns some people off. if you want to learn something about life, take his classes. tests are 70% text q's. do the extra credit for a boost.
One of the single best, experienced, professors in the dept.
Honestly, this is one of those Professors where you go to class and do everything, but have no idea what grade you have in the classhow you are doing until grades are put up on smartsite. Lol you gotta go to class or else you won't get higher than a c.
HES MY FAVORITE TEACHER AT DAVIS! Such a nice, smart guy! Really knows what he's teaching. BEST CMN TEACHER AT DAVIS, learned a lot and even enjoyed going to class!
I love professor Theobald. He's super knowledgable about every class he teaches and gives concrete evidence for concepts. He genuinely wants students to do well.
He is very straight forward. Three exams- 50 questions. Gives 2 points extra credit. He makes the topics interesting. Would recommend taking him! Go to class and read the book and you'll do fine.
I'm not so good about Finance but with Theobald it is very clear. i won't say simple but you can easyly got B
Good class! Although it feels more like economics (without math) than communications. He is interesting and shows a lot of videos! You must read to pass the class. 3 tests and 3 opportunities for extra credit! His teaching style is kind of like he's on a Ted Talk. It's funny when he mentions his ex-wife Virginia. Would recommend!
I love Theobald. He's a great professor and I learned so much from this class. Get ready to read interesting books. I can't recommend him enough.
Read & do study guides - grade is "easy" to get as long as you do the work.
It is a self taught type of class you have to do the STUDY GUIDE! He doesn't go over the book/articles. He's really cool though but a tough course, in the sense that you have to dedicate your time to it, if you want an easy class, this is not the one. An A is possible but you'll have to work for it. Good class and would recommend just make time.
I love Theobald so much. I took 148 with him over the summer and had such a great experience that I decided to take 146 with him fall quarter. I received A's in both courses; just fill out the study guides and take notes in class and you're guaranteed an A. Very easy class and wonderful professor.
NO HW, grade is three multiple choice exams (fifty questions each). He provides study guides, and you must do them to have any chance of passing. The material is very simple, but the exam questions require that you fill them out, and even then, you must have read the books (three total). Overall he's awesome, just don't expect an easy A or B.
I had a decent experience with him. He's not the most engaging professor I've ever had, but he's not terrible either. Lectures feel longer than they are, and as long you do the study guide; youll be able to pass the class.
Theobald does not make the class very difficult but you do have to do the study guide and read the books he assigns or else you will not pass. It is doable to read all three books. I would highly recommend him as long as you have the time for it because it is not an easy A. 3 multiple choice exams.
Lots of readings, lectures and quizzes, easily the second hardest class I have had in college so far and this for the basic course (cmn 10V at UC Davis). The term project was bizarre to say the least, and for an online class, too much of everything from lectures to readings for online if not all classes if you dont feel like working dont take him.
This NFL seminar was pretty boring, but it's an easy p/np 2 units. A movie, a group presentation and a group essay (weird). Theobald's pretty chill, just wasn't too clear on assignment guidelines. But once we figured out what we were doing he was lenient about criteria. Lots of "frat bro" types take this class, so if you don't like that beware.
He has the tendency to make a short story super long. He could have just post everything online instead wasting 2,3 hours talking about things aren't really related and then an hour of something actually important. Not an easy A unless you actually bought three books and read them. Materials aren't too bad just he really test you on the details.
Class is completely online, a bunch of video lectures, online quizzes, articles, a term project & 2 exams that you take in person. It's not that difficult but you have to do a lot of work and get decent scores on the quizzes. It's not an easy intro. Class, you do have to work for the A but it's pretty mellow as long as you do the work+study guide.
This is one of those profs where you have to show up and do the work. If you do, you will have an easy A. He literally gives you study guides with the exact questions he's going to ask about the book reading. Lectures can be LONG but you must pay attention because nothing's posted online. Good lecturer and EASY tests as long as you put in the work.
The class consists of 3 exams, mc & offers extra credit(make sure you do it!) gives you the study guide on the 1st day of class for readings, make sure you do it & understand his readings b/c he doesnt go over them in lecture, its totally on you, must attend lecture b/c itll be on the exam, good class, not too difficult, just READ & STUDY!
Great teacher. I took his four hour class and it was pretty interesting. Tests are based on curves (most of the time) so even if you get a B on the test you might get an A in the class
Online course so not much is to be said about his teaching style, as he isn't the one teaching. As far as facilitating, the course is graded way too hard, with averages hovering at a C. That's almost unbelievable to me given the subject matter. SHOULD be an easy course. Interesting, easy to digest. Both professors and TA's are callous, unwilling.
Every week quizzes
CMN Major requirement. Tough class. Weekly videos, readings, quizzes. Never did readings. Quizzes hard. Midterms not too challenging. A lot of work. Some professors like Yegiyan, Bell lectures LONG!! Opened my eyes to other professors in department. Took CMN101 as well same quarter. Upper Division CMN101 less work than CMN10V!! Nice curve final
His syllabus and instructions for assignments are very unorganized. We have a term project throughout the year on three different topics, but he changed one of the topics one week before the due date, which I already finished. It's very unresponsible and very unorganized. Plus, due date often wrong. Assignments for online discussions are unclear
This class was very simple. Three MC exams, about 2/3 of the questions came from the readings and 1/3 from lecture, and they were usually curved. Exams are easy so long as you thoroughly fill out the study guides he provides. Lecture was long and could get dry at times, but we also watched a lot of movies. Theobald was very nice and accessible.
He didn't teach the class, it was taught by several professors as an introductory course to all topics. Get ready for a lot of lecture watching, quiz taking, and discussion posting. The term project was strange and didn't add any learning value to the course. TA was incredibly helpful. It's fairly easy to earn an A if you put in the time and effort
long lecture videos, quizzes after 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 term project TA screwed me over for term project & A- on midterm & got an F on final haha still did okay though grade distribution if evenly spread through assignments and tests NOT ACCESSIBLE. he rejects all inquiry emails and replies to go to TA, even when only he can answer the question
I hate all those creepy quiz problems and tricky exam questions.
I received over 100% score in this course so I cannot understand those negative comments. CMN 10V is one of the most useful and inspiring courses that I've taken in CMN major. It can help you gain a basic overview of Communication in different fields and help you find your areas of interest. You will do fine if watch all videos and read readings.
Worst professor I've ever taken. Online class before Coronavirus even happened, but he was still unprepared. Exam software has 1 star, has really bad security ratings, and just didn't work for 7% of his students. Emails us daily berating us for asking questions and reminding us that we matter less than his upper division students. Just a real jerk.
CMN 10V Spring quarter 2020. Extremely unorganized when it comes to exams, Professor is not responsive, he gets mad when we email him more than once for clarification, he will make sure to tell you that your question for clarification was idiotic. He does not care about his students and its by far the worst professor I have encountered @ Ucdavis
THE WORST!! Extremely unorganized, does NOT care about students, makes you feel irrelevant, I emailed him multiple times Becuz I was having trouble accessing an exam and he told me to STOP EMAILING HIM !! instead of helping me, he told me to STOP. He is simply the worst.
Not a good professor. I sent him an email politely explaining how unorganized his exams are & he completely misread my email & awarded me the Irony Award targeting me in an email he sent to the entire class instead of privately addressing the misunderstanding to me. This professor is insensitive & very RUDE.
You really cannot comment on his effectiveness in teaching because of the way this course is organized. However, it's easy to comment on his character. Theobald is inconsiderate and does not empathize with students nor does he reply to emails and if he does, there's a huge chance he'll belittle you. Avoid if you can!
it's a lot of readings. but as long as you do what is asked, you are going to pass the class.
Since 10V is an online class, Theobald was the "manager" of the course, not really the instructor. He sent out LONG emails that felt like he was always complaining about his job and he put us under his upper divs which is understandable but not something he should always be reminding us about. Balancing his courses are his responsibility, not ours.
This is a weird class, you have to videos from different professors that teach the upper div version of that chapter. The quizzes were some what difficult because of the time limit but the midterms were fine. I felt like my TA graded the assignments pretty harshly. Overall, decent class was not hard to pass, but it also was not an easy A.
Not sure why so many people bash the professor about how he manages the course. The material is simple and the assignments are clear on what is expected. He didn't give out a study guide, but he clarified what to pay attention to in the readings. Barely devoted a few hours per week and still got near 100% thanks to three easy extra credit chances.
If do you all the work and readings, you should be able to get an A. Class was based on two exams, and the second one was a bit tricky. Prof is a little inconsistent and confusing with his messages, but overall not too bad.
The exams were a bit difficult. The class overall was not too bad just based of 2 exams and participation.
I took this class online, the curriculum is easy and enjoyable. However, tests were proctors and were too specific in all the wrong ways. I got all A's on quizzes and homework but when it was time for tests, it's a different story. He told us to study key term but that was only the smallest part of the test, he put questions based on lecture videos
It's a communication class and he doesn't communicate efficiently and often has to clarify many things said in e-mails. Fairly easy class though, homework assignments and quizzes should be easy As. Exams have some specific questions that make you think, why would you put that? Exams are the make or break of an A or B in the class.
This man made me consider therapy. He didn't teach at all, used previous professor's lectures, and barely interacted with the students. Need to make sure you do well on exams because it will make or break your grade
This guy was actually a good dude. Exams were curved heavy because he knew they were a bit challenging. Lots of reading but super interesting topic that I didn't think I would like this much. Not many assignments but keep up with reading.
The worst class and Professor I had ever met. My TA does not grade Challenge Essay by rubric, and this Professor agrees that. If you dont want unfair grades, trust me, dont take this Professors class, he is not caring students.
Not reasonable set of exams
Theobald frequently blamed his lazy mistakes on the class size of hundreds of students. He never answers piazza or emails, he sends follow ups with corrections his frequent MISCOMMUNICATIONS, and even the one midterm for the class was administered incorrectly to a portion of the class (without any alternative methods to resolve his own errors)
Professor Theobald is difficult to access, students must strictly go through TAs who barely answer. The material is fairly straight forward as he uses a lecturer whos a previous instructor (for the online course), but the exams are incredibly difficult and require lots of prep. Petty points taken off of most assignments that hurt grades massively.
This is my second time taking a class from him and it only got worse. He is incredibly rude in his emails (needs to work on his tone) so everyone is scared of him. The class average was 73% which is super low considering the material really was not complex. I did learn a lot in this class but only from the textbook. AVOID AT ALL COST
genuinely hated this class. the lectures were extremely uninformative and all of the information on the exam was from the text book. he also had us read 2 entire text books and barely covered any info in class. test was much more difficult than it should have been. would NOT recommend.
Absolute joke of a class. He doesn't even teach the course himself. Uses prerecorded lectures from Dr Ruiz. You would expect him to answer your emails or grade concerns- but no. He passive-aggresively tells you to not contact him. TA's nitpick small mistakes on your hw. 2 exams consist 66% of your grade. Exam averages were 70%. Avoid at all cost.
Never answers emails, pretty rude when he does. TAs graded pretty hard, and never answered Piazza. Good luck getting help here. He does not even teach anything. It was pretty class tho, took more work than expected. But I'm grading the prof here, he is not it. Not bad, easy, and manageable, but he does not care at all.
Avoid taking this class. Did not use any of his own lectures and was extremely difficult to communicate with. Did not like responding to students. Your performance on the weekly assignments was entirely determined by your TA's own grading and 66% of the overall class grade was dependent on 2 exams where average was a C and curved only 3 points up.
Why do they have a professor with terrible communication teach a communications class?? please avoid this class if possible. Exams consisted of most of the final grade and averages were barely passing meaning most of the class is either not or barely above passing. does not like talking to students so very TA dependent and its a hit or miss w them
A communication professor who doesn't know how to communicate with his students. NO lectures, NO specific grading rubric. The second exam takes up to 33% of the grade and is extremely hard. Definitely don't take it if u just want a random GE.
Avoid at all cost!
Let's keep it simple: AVOID THIS PROFESSOR Literally uses another professor's materials and all he needs to do is answer students' questions which he doesn't do, 2 midterms graded TOO heavily (with awful questions), and TERRIBLE TA's. Expect drastic grade drops and nonsense grading in assignments. The worst schooling experience I ever had.
Class wasn't difficult to follow. TAs grade your assignments so it's a half and half if you're lucky to be stuck with a good one. Exams are not hard, but it could have been better to be tested based on important materials instead of unnecessary specific questions. Easy A if you spend some time reading the textbook and watching the lectures.
This course isn't based on this professors teachings. He reuses the lectures and assignments from a different professors. Weekly quizzes and assignments aren't too bad, but grading depends on TA. Exam 1 is super simple, but highly recommend reading and memorizing the textbook for Exam 2. Doesn't curve too well. This class isn't too heavy at all.
This has long been a class recommended by friends as a fun, easy and laid back class to tack onto a tough schedule. This dude ruined that vibe. The exam questions are incredibly obscure and random it had nothing to do with the knowledge I gained from this class. Small d energy in emails as well. Wait for a different teacher with peace and love.
Nice professor and he always replies to my emails very quickly every time. This course requires a lot of reading, and the exams are multiple-choice questions.
Weekly one page write ups of course material + project to build resume. Graded easily, but varies with TA. First midterm was fairly simple (lots of memorization from reading and lectures) and relevant with course material. The second one is more tricky, and determined if you receive and A or a B.
The professor himself is pretty bad, but the class isn't too hard as long as you take thorough notes on readings and lectures. Some of the content is a bit hard to grasp, but it isn't impossible.
Terrible professor, average course. You'll get a decent grade if you do all of your assignments. Both midterms (no final) are weighed VERY heavily, so do not underestimate them. Got perfect scores on nearly all of my assignments, and the last midterm dropped my grade down to 88% from 96%... Felt like professor just wanted his paycheck...
He didn't even give lectures. Never talk to his students. It is a joke to assign someone who has no idea about communication to teach a CMN course. Avoid at all cost.
Take my advice and avoid him. Unless you wanna ruin your GPA.
Midterms would determine your grade. If you screw up those two midterms, guess what, you can't achieve a good grade no matter how well you do in other stuff.
Thank god for the curve, or I would've gotten a C. He prerecords his lectures, and the group project was okay, you definitely need a strong group. I took him during fall quarter 2020 and he was moving around a lot because of fires and such. Definitely more effort than needed to pass this class but it was aight.
I recommend not taking one of Professor Theobald at UC Davis. Grading assignments takes usually around 3 weeks so you have no idea how well you are doing in his courses. A Professor should be committed to his students progress, not his paycheck
EXTREMELY RUDE Professor. Avoid him if you can. When you email him, he will catch your grammar mistakes, repeat class rules, and does not answer your questions at all, because he does not teach this class. All videos took from Dr. Ruiz. He also has no UCD email. All grades depend on TA. If TA is bad, Professor does not care you. One essay per week.
If I had taken Cmn10 as a freshman, I would have left the major so fast just bc of him. He's inconsiderate, doesn't care to explain concepts to his students and when students share their worries he shrugs it off. If you're not a CMN major and want to take a CMN class, avoid him at all costs. Take someone else.
Don't take this class if you want an easy A. Each week there are 2 quizzes with 6 questions and a time limit of 5 minutes. After the quiz you won't be able to see your answers. Even if you ask him, he'll just say that the " quizzes are a testing tool and not a learning tool" The Reading is very also very dense. BAD professor!!!
I hate this class. This class gave me anger issues. If people say that this professor is good, then they're tripping. Theobald doesn't teach anything and quizzes are hard for no reason. You're basically on your own and learning yourself. If you can't do that, then good luck. If you're not a Communication major, then AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST!!!
TAKING CMN010V AS FRESHMAN AT THE FIRST QUARTER, DO ALL YOU CAN TO AVOID HIM !! HE IS NOT THE ONE TEACHING, IT'S THE WHOLE CMN DEPARTMENT TEACHING, NEARLY ALL VIDEOS ARE TAKEN DURING 2014-2017, REALLY CONFUSING FOR SUCH A QUICK UPDATE MAJOR COURSE. THEY DIG OUT CORNERS IN TEST BOOK TESTS&QUIZ SUPER HARD. DONOT GIVE ANSWER TO QUIZ AND MID FOR REVIEW
DO NOT TAKE THEOBALD'S CLASS. While the work week-to-week is consistent and easy enough, tests have nothing to do with relevant class information. Beyond tests being hard, he doesn't even teach his courses. Awful professor.
Just....no... Rude, disrespectful, not only a terrible teacher but a terrible person. Well, he never even taught, he just uses youtube videos. I feel like this class is a waste of money. Who teachers, at a UC, using Youtube videos?
He never releases the correct answers, and all quizzes are about very detailed things. I feel like my efforts are useless. Try to avoid cmn10v.
Listen to the bad reviews. I haven’t seen this man teach AT ALL, he just uses Dr.Ruiz material(which is good). Course content is good, but it’s like the TAs/prof know this is an “easy” class so they do all they can to make it harder. It really matters what TA you have. Theobald does not care about the inconsistency in grading.
This class was ok. He used all of Professor Ruiz's material as online lectures. Easy weekly 1-page paper and quiz. Have to take the 2 exams on Examity. The second one was harder than the first because there were specifics from the lecture and not so much vocab like the first one. Overall was an okay GE and not very time-consuming for 4 units.
The final exam was unnecessarily hard, and grading was very strict.
Despite his ratings for 10v and 3v, Theobald’s actually a great professor when he cares about the course. He created this course so he talks about interesting and relevant information while also showing good movies every session. It’s a must take for people interested in journalism. Theobald’s super nice and always easy to reach.
A disgusting professor with a serious attitude problem. For the exams we had to use Examity, and if you follow the date & time of his instructions, you won't be able to register. The disgusting part is, after I reflected the issue on Piazza, he accused me of not following his instructions, then he deleted my post after realizing he is in the wrong.
Everything is wrong with this course and this professor. He doesn't even teach himself. The test is extremely hard and tests on something that is not even important. Please save yourself from avoiding him.
Imagine being an international student, and taking this course the first quarter after coming to the US, I spend more than 3 hours a day in the study room trying to get clear the meaning of these terms and dig into the corners of the textbook, doing my best and received a D this teaching style is literally 0 interactive, only watching and reading.
If you have to take CMN 10 you might not be able to avoid this professor, but avoid if you can. The workload is way too much for an intro class and the quizzes are ridiculous. Questions sometimes ambiguous and super specific and you cant even see what you got wrong. Avoid if you can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! The content is literally so old and he does not teach at all! You just watch youtube videos which seem like they are recorded in early 2000's. His Test's are so different than lectures and very specific. I took this as an easy ge but this class is the worst ge ever. Avoid him at all costs!!!
Honestly, there are multiple bad reviews of this teacher but he's not that bad. You definitely have to put in the work and have the textbook memorized, but if you give yourself a week to study, you'll be good. I had him both for this class and CMN3V, and got As in both. Just thoroughly read the book and you'll ace the test.
Lots of people give this professor a bad reputation simply because they do not fully read through the instructions he sets for the course. He lays out everything in a very organized matter. The only thing you need to do to succeed is watch the assigned lectures, do the corresponding reading and pay attention to instructions.
this professor lowkey sucks but he was the only option. quizzes are lecture based. exams are a mix of reading and lecture. take notes on EVERYTHING the lectures say to pass the 5 min 7 question quizzes and study it right before. exams had some tricky questions but he curves it afterwards. not the best but once you figure out the class its whatever
Harder class than I thought, my advice is to keep up with the weekly textbook readings and take notes so you can study those for midterm/final. Weekly online lectures and quizzes (DON'T MISS THOSE!). Prof sent out weekly helpful announcements
Not the worst but not the best. The only positive thing about him is that he curves the exams. It doesn't seem like he cares too much about his students. Tests and quizzes were a bit tricky IMO; the wording was confusing sometimes. I think if you want to put in the work, you should be fine taking his class.
The class itself was fine, I feel like the online lectures were really outdated and some quiz questions didn't pertain to them well. The lectures were also very long, I would watch and take thorough notes and still wouldn't always get A's. The readings are insanely long too. The professor was no help at all really. The tests were fine.
This class is not as hard as everyone says it is, but it is time consuming and will take some getting used to. Take very detailed notes of the lectures and readings and you will do fine. All the midterms are curved. Read his syllabus very clearly and it will be ok.
Professor does not round even if you are within 0.01% of receiving a higher letter grade.
This professor doesn't seem to care about his students at all. He is pretty dismissive when you communicate with him. His class is not difficult. The reason why I rated it like that is because of his communication style and the glitchy proctoring service used for midterm and finals. Also 2 (5min 7 questions) quizzes weekly.
Completely online class. He gives a YouTube playlist for his lectures and his quizzes are stupid and you dont get to see what you missed. The quizzes dont really affect your grade that much so make sure you do good on the exams bc if you dont, your grade will suffer. He curves exams because everyone fails. Good luck.
Thought this class was pretty well organized and found the material to be overall very interesting. As long as you take notes on the lectures and memorize the key terms from the textbook you will do well. Had an overall good experience in this class! It's definitely a lot of busy work but it is manageable.
While the class itself is not difficult and I (mostly) found the work manageable, Theobald is not the nicest to encounter, even through a screen. He curves, but will only do so/base it off of his desire for the class average to be a B-. He is incredibly snappy and usually rude in all of his replies, even to the simplest (and most valid) questions.
He is really not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. His Piazza attitude is just... sour. I spent about an hour each week doing the weekly assignments and skimming the readings, and I was able to do well. The final exam is harder than the midterm so prepare for that.
horrible professor. does not respond to emails or sends one-word responses. weekly quizzes and you only get three minutes to do them. two exams, pretty difficult for a communications class.
The "teaching" consists of watching YouTube videos from about 9 years ago and reading the textbook. It's obvious he doesn't update the material for this class and it's all just recycled and no longer very relevant. 2 timed quizzes a week give you 5 minutes for 7 questions, so get ready to barely have time to read each question before time is up.
Teaches absolutely nothing, impossible weekly quizzes, very hostile when you ask questions. Do better, UC Davis. How is he the only option for a class all communication majors have to take?! I'm getting an A only because I taught myself all the material from the irrelevant, 10yr old youtube videos. This is not university level education. Disgrace.
The work wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. I only did good by really focusing on the key terms of each chapter in the readings. Most of the exam questions are situation based, so make sure you really understand (not just memorize) all the terms. It was pretty time consuming but just keep up with the weekly assignments.
Professor asks tricky questions on exam and quizzes. For an intro communications class, this class is harder than it needs to be. Take only if you have to for your major. Otherwise, this class and the questions that the professor asks on exams are extremely annoying.
Overall the class is simple, but it is unclear and the lectures are outdated. This professor never actually teaches this class, he just oversees the course material. He gives 5 minutes for a 7 question quiz and the answers are never even in the lectures posted nor in the textbook provided. This class wouldn't be bad if the professor actually cared.
Theobald only uses really old YouTube playlists of videos from other lecturers, doesn't teach by himself. He only taught one lecture out of the entirety of this course, and that lecture was the one where I didn't learn anything at all. Test questions are also very misleading and often leads to way lower scores than expected, even if you did study.
Because this was a virtual class, there was very little interaction with the professor. The class content itself mostly came from youtube videos from 9 or 10 years ago, and there were regualar quizzes, tests, and writing assignments on canvas. Professor Theobald sent out messages to the class, but that was about the extent of the communication.
For a virtual class, it was all right. The class is just doing work on your own based on old outdated YouTube videos (like as far as 10 years ago) and chapters from the textbook. There is little to no interaction with the professor. The material was interesting to some extent, but each week we had a quiz, so do what you will with that...
He didn't teach the class at all. He only uses YouTube videos taught by other professors from 10 years ago and expects you to answer a 7-question weekly quiz in 5 minutes. All the exams are proctored, 50 minutes for 50 questions, and no notes with unnecessary tricky questions, even if you studied. Avoid if you're not a COMs major.
awful professor. genuinely the rudest person i've ever interacted with. for a person who "teaches" (doesn't even teach btw, he uses all of Dr. Ruiz's prerecorded videos) communication, he does not have one clue about coming off nicely to his students. also, TA's have very different grading scales so if you get a bad TA, jt does not care.
People complain WAY too much about Theobald for CMN 3v. He answers things very quickly on piazza, is clear about how to study for exams, the expectations of the class are normal, put in some effort, do assignments on time and study. Grading assignments depends on your TA. Bro literally curves the exams so much. He's a fine professor.
This professor is terrible, his online class wasn't made by him, all of the videos are from an older professor. When contacting him he doesn't know where the class is or anything about how the online format works. Very not understanding of technical difficulties or help in getting back on track in the course. Wouldn't take again.
Don't take his class!!!! He gives only 5 minutes for 7 questions quiz every week, and you have to learn from YouTube videos that posted ten years ago. You thought the exams will come from YouTube videos too? definitely NO... he tested midterm and final based on textbook. This is the hardest class I've ever take.. Harder than BIS2C
Too many videos per week, could be shortened into fewer videos or slideshows. Exams proctored by honorlock, and felt like an invasion of privacy, I felt violated and very uncomfortable, and would pause if flagged down. I have ADHD and not being able to move around and talk to myself was a horrible experience. I DON'T RECOMMEND TO TAKE THIS CLASS.
Don't take him if you don't need to. Even though he curved the tests, it was still kind of a pain.
The professor is very hands off. Most of the lectures are prerecorded by other people, and most of the grading is done by TAs. Not a lot of consistency in the class. Passable class, but not enjoyable.
literally don't take this class. his course is making me rethink my major. he tanked my GPA. he ruined my life. he might as well take my car and dorm, too. 2 weekly quizzes, 7 questions each with a 5 minute time limit. Lisa Jihyun Hwang is NOT a good TA. he just doesn't update his lecture videos that date back like a decade. stop letting him teach.
I had him for CMN010v, but he doesn't teach the class. It's just old prerecorded lectures from different professors, annoying quizzes, and textbook readings that made up 75% of the midterm and final. It's unnecessarily difficult and basically just an intro to every other comms course. Useless class I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you have to.
avoid this class. formatting of questions on exams was beyond weird. everything is taught by several different professors at davis, which made things super confusing. prof theobald is so out of touch w the class, only sends announcements and doesn't do anything else. avoid! :)
The grading was very clear and it was a easy online class that I highly recommend. Very good professor and teaching staff.
Ez class, there are two weekly quizzes apart from the weeks where there is a research article (1-2 pages), and some weeks there's a discussion post. weekly quizzes are based off online lectures and tests are mainly based on the book. dont be intimidated, as long as you turn in everything, watch the lectures and read the books, youre good.
the midterm and final did not feel like they related to the actual course content. there were readings but they were barely related to the 3 hour long lectures. expected this course to be more of an application course on news instead of an analysis of news history.
I took him for a seminar, nice guy you could tell that he acted for the job, one group project and some discussions.
