Great teacher. Very helpfull.Great listner to any complaints. (English 118,98,116)
super easy class. he is really nice. very little hw about 3 vocab quizzes (sooo easy) 3 essays and a final presentation on a chosen book.
Great teacher. He is a quirky teacher, and he has respect for all his students.
This instructor made English fun! He is always very happy and he is always very helpful to all of his students. He is very easy to understand; He clarifies everything!
In my opinion he's a great teacher & a good guy, very upbeat & outgoing, loves to go to the gym to do benchpress HaHa, makes the class fun...has 3 drafts for essay so getting a good grade on your papers is not hard at all...I highly recommend this teacher...for someone who hates English he made it worth while
DO NOT TAKE HIM! First day of class there were 42 students, last day there were 9 and the highest grade was a B. Waste of time to even go to class because he puts you in groups or sends you to the library. Worst teacher i've ever had.
I think J. Thomas was super helpful! His bubbly personality made you want to come to class! I had him for english 118 and made sure I had him for 116
Thomas is a fabulous teacher. I learned HOW to write an essay in 118. I learned how to be a boss at persuasive essays and thesises. Peer editing is useless, so many ESL/Foreign kids were in the class. The most valuable part to the class was 1-1 editing with thomas. Very enjoyable class set aside the language barrier in 118.
Fabulous. He's energetic, funny, and his teaching is easy to follow.
This man is one one of the worst teachers i have ever had the misfortune of haveing. i never learned a single thing from him. he does not teach. all he does it put you in groups and do pointles blathering. he lost one of my essays. and blamed it on me. and he lies repeadely. DO NOT TAKE HIM. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
he's not one of those teachers who just lets things slide. if you show up and do the work you WILL pass. he was very helpful and his energy level made it easier to follow what he was talking about. we wrote 4 essays not including the midterm and final and we were able to edit the essays several times. overall, great teacher.
I regret taking his class, the only grades he knows C, D,F dont take his class
A waste of time, effort and energy in writting essays, he doesnt know how to motivate students, dont take his class you would regret it
timely submission of paper works, perfect attendance and class room participation is not a gurantee that you will get a grade of C better not to take his class or you will regret it later
8 text book assignments, each one 10 points. 3 summaries about of The Kite Runner, each one 25. TKR essay = 100. TKR group presentation = 50. 40 voca card = 40. 2 voca quizzes, each one 30. participation = 100 points. reflection = 50. final presentation = 100. the maximum points you can get is 755. It is fun class! and he is really nice n organized
great teacher very nice i loved going to his class we do alot of group work but its a fun and easy going class
This was a good class! If you do the homework and the reading im sure you will do well in his class. He is very nice, helpful and overall a good teacher.
Previous comments regarding this professor caused me concern but it fit in my time slot so I had to go with it. To my surprise I learned so much in this class and he really cares about his students improving their skills. Take his class if you are interested in learning and improving not just a easy pass
Easy class, can be boring sometimes, few voca quizzes, hw every-class, two essays, few summaries, two presentations
Boring, he opens up his lecture by telling students how he box everyday and look it really shows. Dont know how to teach and motivate students
Super teacher! I was concerned as well with the comments I had read prior to attending his class but as it turned out Mr Thomas is by far the best instructor I have had while attending DVC. He is very helpful to the students that WANT to learn, so if you are a slacker - forget about it!
I got an A in the class. I showed up every session prepared and interested in learning. I thought he was a great teacher, interesting and funny. He got you to fully understand the reading and it was all fascinating material.
I took his IRW 116 118 class and he's very helpful and his class is easy. you do have to do some reading and about 5 essays but he's by far one of the best English teachers. really helpful in helping you understand the subject and concepts.
One of the best teachers here at DVC I've had so far. Very easy class, I took the integrated IRW 116/118 and he covers everything exceptionally well. You can expect 5 essays and one final group project most likely. He does everything he can to get you an A and as long as you put forth the effort should be an easy class.
Very approachable. Very hands on. He gives a lot of homework but it is all easy. He is very straight forward. Just do the work and its an easy A!
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS! Grades very hard, however you do get to revise it if you get a D or lower. If you put alot of time into this class you can probally manage a B-
116/118 integrated
This is one of the few english teachers i've had that actually taught me how to write. His essay topics were all controversial political issues, so as well as learning how to write an essay we got a chance to learn about current events. lots of classroom discussions. Just a fun guy overall! you'll learn a lot if you're willing to put in the effort.
Overall fun class but moody teacher, do not expect it to be a piece of cake, teacher does not grade easy. If he thinks your English is not good enough to take the class, he will have no problem telling you straight up. Most of the time he'll be in a good mood but in those certain days when he's in a bad mood WATCH OUT! Do not try and argue with him
Grumpy teacher. He was nice at the beginning of the semester and then turned into the grinch. It was fun taking his class at first but around 3 months into the class his whole demeanor changed. He never gives you positive feedback.
Assignments are easy. But for the final you need to do a group presentation which I don't really like doing. His grading is fair. His explanation is quite clear, but tends to go off topic sometimes.
Barely showed up to class which i regret as attendance do matter (would've gotten an A), 3 parts of fairly easy essays, and a group project for finals. Be extremely very creative for the final presentation.
Mr. Thomas is a really good English teacher. He really helped me with my writing skills unlike the arrogant English teachers at my high school. He made me very confident in my writing ability. He also has no tests just essays. Four essays and the final is the fourth essay. So that's one final you don't have to study for!
He has a lot of experience but really tough grader.
He gives so many paperwork. Unclear lessons.
Great and smart teacher. Easy class, just do your homework keep up with the readings and you will get an A
Just don't take his class , that's it.
Mr. Thomas is a great professor and someone who cares about his students. Honestly, if you ask for help he will be there to guide you. This was my first english class at DVC and I got an A. With his help I became a better writer. I would definitely take him again for any other english class.
dont take his class!!!!!!!!!really tough grade
Integrated 118/116. He is very moody. No matter how much you try he throws back same comment and same grade. So discouraging. He grades your work based on his personal preference. If you left him a good impression first few days of the class, then you will be "good, good, good" rest of the class... The bottom line is don't take his class5 !
Lots of homework and tough grader. Does not respect his students. Don't take it!
Amazing!!! Really patience and willing to take some time in the class talk about news, rather than just read and write. But get ready for reading, usually 1 to 2 hours every hw.
Totally disorganized, kept changing the schedule and rarely made it clear what we were expected to do.
Wouldn't take this class again, he has a syllabus that he wants you to follow but changes all the dates. Very unclear homework assignments. I do like how he gives you a chance to revise your first and second essay depending on how you did. Grades really hard and not a lot of people like him. His class is always group work so be expecting to work in groups every time you go
Honestly A LOT of people did not come to this class including me this semester and you can still get an A. He's VERY EASY going. If you're going to be absent just email him and he totally understands. All the writing you do he lets you revise if you get a bad grade and at the end he will let you know if you need to drop or if you're fine. EASY A.
Sweetest professor I've had so far. I found this class to be easy, but many of my classmates struggled. Eng-118 is intended for those who need help with their writing skills, but he sent the students who needed help to tutoring. He did give them feedback, but I didn't really learn anything from that class. If you're struggling, take another prof.
Mr. Thomas was seen as somewhat disrespectful in his tone but overall is great. There is no way you shouldn't pass this class, its really up to you. He allows rewrites on the first 3 essays and he always encourages you to send him a rough draft before submitting a final. He gives very clear feedback that same day and therefore you should pass easy.
he is the sweetest professor I've ever had. you have 4 essays on a certain topic and is given plenty of time to do it. he grades everything very well and is understandable. his class is very recommended
Mr. Thomas doesnt like giving lectures is more of a group work person. For his class you will get readers and do group work on them and homework. 4 essays a semester and one vocab test and 2 pop quizzes. 3 of the 4 essays are political .
A tough grader. You will be frightened after you receive your grade. However, the training is really worthy of it. He tried to be humorous, but I think he failed. Overall, he is a good teacher.
Mr. Thomas is always available via email and office hours. He helps students succeed by giving proper feedback to your essay drafts. He insists that everyone goes to the English Lab for guidance, and I think that helped a lot as the tutors are more than happy to provide an additional layer of feedback for your papers. An awesome English teacher!
A really cool guy and just always reach out to him if you have any problem (absence or anything). He really understands for college students and he just wants all of his students to succeed. But always prepare for group works which are kinda annoying.
Great teacher for building your writing skills. As long as you're willing to work and better your craft, I suggest this teacher.
He is an amazing teacher! Yes he can be hard but as long as you try, do your best, participate, and ask for help when you need it, then you shouldnt have a problem passing the class.
He is a great teacher. I would take his class again. He cares if you learn what he has to teach and wants you to understand. He suggests that you seek tutoring when needed and gives extra credit for it. He gives good feedback to help you make papers better before turning them in for the final grade. He's just an all around good teacher.
a lot of group work but this was my favorite class based off classmates. made a lot of friends since you get to know your classmates. mr thomas allows you to email you your essays and gives loads of feedback so you get good grades on essays. put in the effort and you will see it pay off. he really wants everyone to succeed and chooses great reads
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He discriminates his students, makes them feel less of what they are!!! I have never ever been bullied by a teacher before. Tons of groupwork and trust me youll never get an A in his class, whatever you write about he'll NEVER like it and your work will NEVER be good enough for him no matter how much you email him or ask help
I really liked the class the class end up becoming really small to almost 8-10 people he grades easily stating you can email him the homework and still get a good grade but he real insist on you being in the class the attendance alone is 100 pts he isn't a negative person in my view of taking his class
As a person, he is a very caring, has sense of humor, and really a likable teacher. However as a teacher, I wouldn't say that great because his grading of English isn't based off of how good the essay is, but mostly graded based on structure. He has the structure he wants and if you figure it out A is really easy to get GoodParticipationGoodGrade
If you are a student that wants to know your grade throughout the semester (just like every student) he isn't the professor for you. Gives out SO many articles and you have to do a reading response for each one. Tough grader when it comes to essays. I would definitely not recommend him. Terrible.
He's really nice and has a good personality but he assumes a lot of work and grades harshly. There's homework everysingle night and you have to read tons of articles. I've never been good at writing but usual I can get a passing grade on my essays but in this class I got a D on the first essay. He also only shows you your grade twice a semester
There are a lot of Papers to read, however Mr. Thomas helped me understand Essay structure. It was a breath of fresh air as someone who always had trouble with High School English. Mr Thomas always has room to listen and responds to emails within 24 hours. He truly cares and always wants to help his students
This professor Gives no chances. No mercy. This professor will not let you make anything up, and you will just have to luck your chops like the poor animal you will feel that you are. Avoid at all costs. If you dont check assignments every hour you will miss the assignments and there are no chances given. Save your sanity and take another.
Professor Thomas was great! I took the course over summer, whilst take trig and I never once felt stressed on time to hand in assignments, he is extremely accommodating, always replying promptly to emails and during the time of covid he makes the effort to get personal with his students. I would definitely recommend him.
I took him during spring 2020. Mr. Thomas is just very lovely and caring. Never fails to reply to emails within 24 hours. He grades forgivingly and he makes his expectations very clear. A lot of small group work (in class), but no presentations required. The only thing that surprised me is that his essay prompts are very specific/decided for you.
He is very aware of his students and their strengths and weaknesses. He answers emails super fast and is very helpful and gives supportive accurate feedback. Out out all my English teachers, he by far was the clearest and best at explaining his assignments. If you had a bad English teacher before, he will definitely give you some relief!
Prof Thomas was one of my favorite teachers! He's really lenient with his grading and gives honest/great feedback. Yes, his essay topics are specific but he gives honest feedback for support through writing. Some were struggling in his class but he gave opportunities for growth within his classwork and homework. Also he replies to emails fast!
Excellent professor! I wouldnt call this class an easy A, however, Mr. Thomas provides thorough feedback in essays and homework that helps guide you toward an A for future assignments. He also allows for a revision in the first essay and has a coupon system that excuses up to two assignments. Overall, hes very caring, helpful, and understanding.
Mr. Thomas is fabulous. He is extremely funny and cares deeply about all the things he teaches. Very responsive to emails, will email back within a few hours or a day at most. He has specific grading, but once you get the hang of it it is super easy to pass. Would highly recommend Mr. Thomas!! :D
Prof. Thomas is helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely wants you to succeed. He has a coupon system, accepts late work, and gives awesome in-depth feedback which makes this class an attainable A. You write 5 reading responses & 3 essays throughout the semester. Attendance not mandatory but if you go every week, its a GUARANTEED B or above! TAKE HIM!
Thomas' feedback is great, class is discussion based and interesting. We read a lot of good literature. I think he graded pretty easily, and the assignments were all easy, with clear guidelines and instructions. He offers a lot of opportunity for extra credit if you are struggling
I have never seen a more difficult/annoying professor, Professor Thomas has an almost mind-bogglingly confusing set of requirements for his essays. While his essays have a short page requirement, I find no reason why an essay has a mandatory verb count, no this is not a typo, there is a verb count for each essay. To encourage an active "writer.
Class is structured around tedious discussions and mandatory participation. It is almost impossible to get an A if you consistently skip class. In spite of that, professor Thomas does give good feedback, and reading responses/ essays get easier as you progress through the class. A final note is extra credit is provided in the form of tutoring.
Prof. Thomas is a well educated professor whom I consider to be fairly entertaining but this class will be very participation and reading heavy as there are many discussions that pertain to these. Tough but fair grader and will make you work
Mr. Thomas is a very helpful and caring professor. He responds to emails very quickly, offers extra credit for attending tutoring, and is always willing to look over your assignments before you turn them in. He really wants you to succeed and grow as a writer.
I will have the phrase "LOOK UP HERE" ingrained into my nightmares forever because of him. He's very pushy about tutoring even if you don't need it. I didn't really learn anything and all I really did was pump out papers for the class. If you value being treated like an adult don't take this class as he treats it like freshman English.
Mr. Thomas is an amazing teacher. He really "holds your hand" through this course. He has a number of resources on Canvas that will help with each lesson and very responsive to emails. He does everything he can to help you succeed. There is a bit of reading, but every assignment does have a purpose to help you improve as a writer.
i enjoyed his class because I became a better writer. The amount of work he assigned was fair because it all helps with your essay. He also doesn't really lecture but when he does it is entertaining and short. He is kind of a tough grader but offers late coupons and extra credit so it evens out. He's also nice and very accessible outside of class
Mr. Thomas is the best english teacher I've ever had. He repaired my relationship with writing and improved my academic writing so much. He gives such thorough feedback. He truly cares about the success and progress of every student. There is a lot of papers in his class, but he gives you lots of opportunities to succeed. HIGHLY recommend.
Professor Thomas is a really organized teacher. He gave constructive feedback on essays and helped us develop our ideas. He's also super funny. The essays we wrote in class were interesting and had open-ended prompts we could expand on. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a high tolerance for missing class, even if you have an excuse.
dont take him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u will get A LOT OF READINGS
I thought Mr. Thomas' class was great. No qualms really, it was somewhat relaxing if I had to say. All the readings were interesting, well, except for poetry that is -- but I mean, who truly enjoys poetry am I right. He is very understanding and gives ample opportunity to boost your grades and scores. I'd say it give it a 95/100.
Classes are very chill and there are lots of class discussions. The essay prompts are easy, and he gives great feedback fairly quickly, however he is a little slow on grading the essays and reading responses.
Taking Mr. Thomas's course was honestly the best choice I could've made. He created such a good foundation for college writing and it has helped me in every other class I've had. He provides really thorough feedback and always has opportunities for extra credit. He really takes the time to make sure everyone is succeeding. I strongly recommend.
Up until this point struggled writing essays. Mr. Thomas gives really great feedback and resources to go to if you're struggling. Take every piece of advice he gives you and you WILL succeed in his class.
As an incoming freshman, Professor Thomas improved my writing so much. He gives you a syllabus on the first day with a calendar for the whole year. One main thing I recommend is using his office hours and tutors. You do three essays and one group project. The essays are open-ended and he helps you the whole way through.100% recommend this class.
I loved him! Super helpful if you talk to him, a bit of a tough grader but gives extra credit. I know a lot of students did not like him, but I had an excellent experience with him. Gives extra credit for getting tutoring, I learned a lot of really helpful writing techniques in his class. Assignments have a purpose, they build on eachother.
If you enjoy readings I recommend him. We read a few short stories per week, after its poems then we stop somewhere midway of the semester to focus on M Butterfly (a play) and There There (a book). The harder you reach in essays the more he loves it lol
The class overview: Reading responses 3+ pages each, total 5 assignments. And 3 essays total, 5+ pages each. The class seems like a lot, but, it's not too bad; he gives ample time for each assignment, 2 weeks in advance. The grading is a little rough, but he gives really good feedback. GO TO TUTORING FOR EXTRA CREDIT, SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT GIVEN!!!
Professor Thomas is one of the few English professors who really cares about how you do in his class. He gives great essay feedback and he makes sure that you constantly improve upon your writing creativity and flow. He also has a very charming personality that makes his class enjoyable and easy to pay attention to. Good for ENG-122 or ENG-123.
If you listen and participate I don't think it's possible to fail this class, he tells you early what he looks for and provides extra credit tutoring thus giving you many opportunities to fix your essay before submission. He provides these passes for extensions which I much appreciated. Critiques in class are embarrassing but he's goated overall.
His canvas is super disorganized, like actually a mess. In class hes fine and its pretty laid back, but when we go through thesis workshops everyone needs to write it on the board and he grills all of us even though its supposed to be a "rough thesis." He assigns an impossible amount of readings. Avoid him if you can, but he's not too bad.
he doesnt do quizzes or tests but the homework load is genuinely just impossible. I dont think anyone in my class did it and most of us did completely fine. He's also just a little bit annoying in class but that might just be me lol.
Confusing rubric for assignments, not understanding, annoying
Mr. Thomas cares for his student's success, but he is not very personable/approachable in class. His canvas is disorganized and it's difficult to know what's going on in-class if you've been absent. He does offer countless extra credit opportunities (getting tutoring), and in my opinion, the classwork wasn't too difficult.
He was very nice however he doesn't teach very well. When you have a complex question he tends to tell you to get tutoring rather than help you. His class wasn't complicated and his workshops are helpful, but the tutoring bothered me a lot.
His canvas is extremely disorganized and almost impossible to navigate. The work load of fine until the final week when it becomes 10x more and just about impossible. He personally attacks you in his grading and is very very rude. Does not help when asked just refers you to tutoring. Overshares about his personal life. Overall he needs to retire.
A lot of reading, responds to emails, gives good feedback and tips for improving writing papers.
Prof. Thomas was awesome! He gives amazing, punctual feedback, and his class was genuinely interesting and was not a lot of work! However, his Canvas was quite disorganized.
Professor Thomas was great, he gave clear feedback, and gave examples of what he was looking for on responses and essays. He was enjoyable to work with and always answered his emails quickly. I would have taken English 123 with him if he offered it.
Mr. Thomas was a vert nice guy, you can tell he cares about his students. I think my onyl complaint is that his canvas is disorganized, but as long as you're in class he explains everything thats due, and all the readings (You really don't have to do all the readings except for essays) Overall, he is a very helpful, caring and informative teacher.
Sweet and well spoken. Typical english class, essays and reading. He's very clear with his expectations and how you will succeed in his class. My biggest con was that he treated us like kindergarteners, but I managed. Requires time but I wouldn't say it was a lot of busy work or that I dedicated a lot of time/hours to the class.
I would definitely not taking this class again due to long lecture. Also this prof gives tough grading. Didn't understand much in this class.
He was a great teacher and his class is very easy to succeed in as long as you pay attention and don't mess around.
I loved Prof Thomas. He's such a good guy with very clear grading criteria. He doesn't assign much homework besides reading responses and 3 essays, and the final is an essay along with a group project. The only thing I would say is he does sometimes give short notice before a paper is due, but he is very flexible and understanding. Take him!
He encourages lots of partner discussion and oftentimes moves people around so we talk to new people, which is kind of nice. His grading takes time but it's worth it because he does lots of annotations, most of which aren't negative. Lots of chances to get extra credit so take advantage! Interesting topics! Wouldn't mind taking him again.
He critiques your work like crazy and he talks to us like we are little kids and he is just a rude guy who comes off as nice, but he is passive aggressive and mean about literally anything. Also, he assigned a reading response, a project, and an essay for our final and gave us 2 weeks for all of it. I was so stressed 😅
