Horrible teacher unless you already understand calculus. assumes that everyone knows what he is talking about. i would not recommend

I had this professor for math and his was good. You have to study the material and ask questions then everything is good.
Not interested in the benefit of students at all!
worst teacher ever!
His tests are divided in to 2 portions, a take home test and a M/C test in class.. both worth 50 % so if u dnt like M/C make sure u get all points on the take home part. pay attention and do ur hw.. then everything will be fine, passed with a C by only doin the take home part as a review for the M/C test
he is not easy but he is fair.
This is the worst teacher ever. It is unfortunate that students have to pay soo much money to be taught by someone like Mr. Thomas. He needs to go back to school and learn how to teach. He teaches from examples! I think it is time for him to resign and let those who love to teach, teach. Please do not take him if you do not want a failing grade!!!!
During reviews, he goes through the tests question by question so you know what to expect. People who failed probably didn't study because he basically tells you whats on the exam.
Took twice to make better grade turned in all homework and made 2 A's on last tests.. still made a C. Both times the class started with 28 to 30 people. I was one of 3 that took the final BOTH TIMES!!! I never had a professor who took great satisfaction in beating down students with trick question!

DONNNNNNNT GUYS!!!!DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS JERK!!!I WOULDT SUGEST HIM TO NE ONE EVEN THOUGH I WOULD HAVE 5 HANDGRANADES, 6 BEERS, 4 LONG ISLAND ICE TEAS, STILL MY SUBCONCIOUS MIND WILL SAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TO HIM!!!HE`LL REALLY REALLY **** UP UR GRADE, NO EXTRA CREDITS, NO CURVES, NO BONUS QUESTIONS, I MEAN WAT THE HELL IS THIS?
People, this IS a good instructor, Trig is just hard so don't expect an A if you're not good at math. Do your homework and practise a lot, if you have problems just ask him to explain. He doesn't add a curve, but honestly if you get a D and a curve brings you to a B, what did you really learn?? If he is going to fast just ask him to slow down.
this teacher simply sucks, avoid him at all cost, he will seriously mess up your gpa.
If you ask him, he will practically read the question off the test during the review. The key to passing his class is to pay attention during the review. I mean detailed attention, and then you will do fine. If you ask he will help, he isn't a mind reader.
ABSOLUTELY the worst math professor i've ever taken. his test are all done on scantron which means he dosen't care that you've done your best effort or not. plus all the answer choices are very very tricky. he is very interested in knowing the background of the problem and not just how to do it.If you're not naturally good at Math Do Not Take Him
I took him for the June summer course and got an A. He goes over the material on a review the day before the test. All of his tests were on scantron, which made it much easier for me since you could just plug in answers & if not, you still have atleast a 1/4 chance to get the answer correct. Its hard but highly possible to get an A!
teacher went to fast. Didnt go in full explained when needed to could care less if kids needed help when the students tried to ask him questions about test or work he ingore them and not had no interest in trying to give a helping hand
I suck at math, but with his reviews I got an A. Bunch of my classmates got B's. He does go really fast, but if u show up & study the reviews, u'll pass his class 4 sure. The review 4 the final was departmental so I found the final much harder than the review. If u want a teacher 2 hold ur hand, he's not the 1 4 u. No homeworks, no book needed.
my HONEST recomendations... please, dont do it. he basically reads the boock out to you. i droped the class and so did 3/4 of my class mates. no extra points, no quizes no notes on the exams. i either had time to take notes or look at what he was doing because he would rush through the lectures.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had since I started college. He doesn't care or offer to help you what so ever. He doesn't drop any tests and he teachers VERY poorly. All scantron test meaning 3wrongs = B grade. I recommend people to never take him its a waste of money. Although, I pass with a B I learned everything myself.
Well I am about to drop his class. Not his fault though. He does go through the course material rather quickly, but I have always struggled with math. Anyway, I think the guy is pretty straight forward.
Day before class started my boyfriend and I searched for John Thomas. We read everything what says here. But im pretty good at math, and my bf too so we thought that we will be ok even so most of the comments were negative. Well, my bf droped his class month later, i didnt drop it but i regret that i ever ever ever took him. he is not good at all.
I am not sure why this man is teaching. He is terrible and has obviously no desire to teach to students. He does a terrible job explaining details, does not correct any homework so that students have an idea of whether or not they are comprehending the material correctly. I used to be a 4.0 student until him. He SUCKS!!!
The problem is really on the course n students not on the prof. The course covers lots of stuffs on which students need to practice much by themselves. N basic skills on previous math classes are necessary for students to absorb calculus thoroughly. The prof.is available for any question, but he has to go quickly to give students enough information.
I took this class over summer and it was a very simple course. If you go to class,do the hw, and study what he tells you...your pretty much guaranteed a B. His tests were partially take home so it bumped up everyones test grades. If your lazy don't take his class
If you are looking for a great math teacher- take Nancy Pence. If you're looking to waste your time and money- take Mr. Thomas. This guy uses scantrons on MATH tests. He's funny and pretty nice, but definitely made for the corporate world and not for teaching. I am a math major looking to teach because I love it, find somebody who loves teaching.
I took John for college algebra during mini. This was the last class i needed to grauduate my Gpa plummeted so bad i regret the waste of time and money in his class. If you take him and fail the 1st test please leave his class
If you are looking to pass college algebra, dont take this man. I dont understand how he's still teaching. He shows no desire to teach and acts like he's just there for the paycheck.
Mr. Thomas focuses more on the basic principals of each problem and answers whatever questions anyone has in depth. He doesnt teach the harder problems but if you study from your book as well you will get the whole picture. His test reviews are KEY and if you study them there is no reason you shouldn't get an A or a B in his class.
I took him for meteorology and it was easy.the tests sometimes contained questions that we never went over. He also gives you an attitude if you give him the wrong answer to a question which is why I stopped answering. You must attend class. The final is extremely easy. There are no homework, just 3 tests and the final. this class is ok.
I wish I had taken someone else for Calc I. He doesn't look around the room as he's working problems to see if students are understanding. Also talks to himself often and goes through the problems very quickly. Calls roll and also doesn't look up as students are answering to see faces. Not sure why he teaches as obviously he has no interest.
he has no idea about mathematics.
He's a meterologist. I have no idea why he teaches math. I bet he is much better at teaching geology etc. He rarely helped anyone with anything, but this was a 5-week summer session, so he might have just been too busy.
I am great at math have made A's in all my previous math courses. For the first two tests I failed which i did exactly what he said then i did a's on last two tests when i taught out of book. He is horrible started with 30 people ended with 8
Rarely uses the textbook. Mymathlab is more helpful than the class itself. His reviews are helpful for the tests. Don't ask questions because he gets irritated. You must visit the math lab in this class if you want to do well.
How can this professor have THIS many bad reviews??? I took 3 classes with him, including college algebra, meteorology and trigonometry. I did fine. Just make sure you take good notes and attend everyday. And do the problems he assigns. People fail because they don't do the problems he assigns. He gives them for a reason. Definitely recommended.
He has this many bad reviews for a reason...I studied from the book, took notes, did problems in the book and basically did a ton of extra work and got a bad grade. No structure to his lesson plans. horrible
Hard course.Professor tries his best(mostly does book examples in class,helpful).Enlists you in Webassign($35).Gives selected Qs from book.Gives2tests,takehome and class,5 of them.Takehome is hard but doable.Class test is easy but be careful bc 10qs 1q=10marks.Very reasonable.Do this.Study book+do selected qs+then webassign+then takehome.Assured A.
I took him for statistics. If you are a math person this guy is for you. As long as you attend class and do the homework, you will for sure get an easy A.
thomas is a great teacher he teach math so easy and he help out if you have some issues also his tests are build of the review so you need to attend each class and follow his classes you will sure get an A easier i like this teacher he is awesome
Good teacher, moves very quickly and will explain anything that you are having trouble on in great detail
I took this class last minute during second half of summer last years. I got lucky it was open because my ap scores for Cal BC came in 2 days before the class started. I was even surprised they even let me take the class since i was only a sophmore in high school. Anyway, the class is very easy and all you have to do is show up.
Calculus III with John Thomas was the single most horrible class and learning experience I've had my entire academic career. He has absolutely no interest in the students and this shows with his lazy, monotonous teaching style. Avoid at all costs, unless you absolutely need this class and there are no other options. Overall rating: 1.5/10
This professor is not very helpful at all. All he does is go through the problems in the book and say do the homework in the back of the chapter. Dont ask questions because he will have an attitude. Goes to fast and doesnt offer shortcuts, tips etc. No extra points dropped tests or nothing. Not satisfied at all.
TERRIBLE!!!! Don't take him. NO respect for the student. Compares math with sandwiches. HCC has a vast variety of bad teachers but he must be the leader. No teacher will make you feel more stupid!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!! Your life will turn into a disaster. All he does during class is go through examples in the book and THATS IT. If you love math don't take him becuase he will make you hate it.
I'm taking this class. I read the comments before and I thought all this was comments from lazy people. I apologize with you. All of you were right. This teacher is the worst. He enjoys his little world of Math while he is talking by himself. The book and the videos are teaching me better than him. I think I'm going to fail.
I took this for summer 2. He is COMPLETELY NOT WORTH IT!!! Dont waste your money. Even if u really need this cls ASAP, He would make u regret it. His exams r ridiculous n hard. I'm an A student in all my math classes. I had to drop this one & register for fall. He gives 5 exam-55%, onlinehomework-20%, and final 25%. he doesnt drop any.
He doesnt let any keep the test or your scratch paper. he does not do corrections. he has test A n B, so even after the exam, u cnt review it with a friend. he talks to himself when teaching. You really hv to study the textbook. he makes his question confusing. every question has 'none of the above' option. so if u r stuck, guessin isnt an option
CALC 3.
Incredible professor. It is true that this professor uses a heavy amount of textbook material to cover his lectures, but he modifies them in a way that makes it more understandable than the textbook. It's also incredibly hard not to get an A in his class, how can you fail a test when he gives you the exact questions to study beforehand?
I am serious about college and do put in a lot of work that is why I am taking 20 credits this term. This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He shows no interest in your learning. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! One time I could not say anything back to him when he was being rude cuz I was scared that he might fail me.
Lin. Alg. entirely reliant on text. No shortcuts taught. Assigns homework, but doesn't grade it, so buy solutions manual. Few teachers for this course. You may have no choice. Gives test reviews, which help. 3 tests and a final, each 25% of grade. No curve. A lot of students shoot for a "C" just to have it behind them, but it's not easy.
So I just dropped his Diff Eq course and it wasn't because I couldn't understand it. The form of instruction is not good. He ends class 30 mins early everyday after barely legible lectures. He uses web assign as 25% of your grade, BUT bases your test on additional homework given in class. The tests are scantron with no partial grade or curve.
Should have checked here before I chose him as a professor! He is extremely quiet. If you want to be able to hear what he is saying you need to sit at the very front of the class. When he writes on the board it is very messy, barely legible. When you ask him to explain what he wrote he tells you that you should have been listening.
I took Professor Thomas for Statistics. There are no pop-quizzes or surprises in his class- everything is on the syllabus. There are 4 exams & a final- all of which are multiple choice. He has a very dry sense of humor. It is VERY difficult to stay focused in his class because he doesn't speak loudly and is monotonous. Good guy, bad professor.
If you want to pass this course then you have to pay close attention, because he does not speak loud nor explain things clearly. He's exams are quite fair and there's critical thinking. He does dismiss class really early every time he does the attendance. Do the homework it well save you. And learn how to use the calculator you'll need it for sure
HE SUCKS. He ruined my GPA. I had a 4.0. I took college algebra, and out of the 36 kids in my class, only 4 were left by the end of the class. His test are a mess. I WISG I WOULD HAVE READ HIS REVIEWS!!!!! DO NOT TAKE.
1- be ready to do a lot of homework 2- take note and compare to those homework 3- read the book 4 - Easy A
I wouldn't say he's good. He isn't loud and clear, as you can see on many reviews here. You have to sit on the front to hear him. Expect a lot of online homework, don't leave that to the last minute, it's 20% of your grade and you have a lot of chances on the questions. He gives out exatcly what the tests are gonna be likeon the review classes
After 13 years worth of all kinds of classes, subjects, and teachers, i have to say Mr. Thomas is by far THE WORST instructor I have ever encountered. Its seems to me that the man has a inherent belief that his students are all able to follow the subject matter as ell as he does; also he gives no curves or bumps. I could go on forever....
If you want to learn how to deal with a tough grader take Dr. Thomas , rules are unchangeable. But Dr. Thomas is indeed a very nice person, you can ace your tests as long as you show up on the review sessions. But you gotta teach yourself and do the homework. Meanwhile, get ready to be a fast test taker.
I wish I would've read a little bit more about John Thomas before I began his class. It is nearly impossible to understand and follow along with his lectures. When he writes on the board, it is all scribbles. He is monotonous and gets upset with students if they have any questions during the lecture. I will never take him again.
not recommended for any one in differential equation will not get his point and skip solving with one hour 25 questions
whizzes through concepts. You get the impression that he has a certain amount of material he wants to cover at all costs based on his reaction to questions. With previous test papers, his tests are doable. beware of notoriously hard grading. As a teacher he is somewhere between terrible and bearable. wouldnt take again
Professor Thomas' lecture pace is reasonable with your preparation before class. He is willing to address any questions you may have. There was a large volume of homework for a mini session, but it can all be completed within the 4 weeks if you work on it daily. He is the facilitator, performance and mastering the material is up to the student.
He gave you the textbook & online hw, and he never cared if you can do it or not. When I asked him about one of the hw he gave that I couldn't do, he even could not solve it. Have a question during the lecture? If you don't raise hand high enough, or have a low voice, he would not see you and ignore you.
WORST! You wont even heard anything even if you are siting at the first row. His lectures are bad, gives lots of homework which is not even needed for exam or even not done in class just a waste of time on materials that you don't even need for the exams. I agree exams are exactly as review but you wont know the material to do the review.
hes super easy. those students who complains are those who don't fit for engineering majors, but that's the fact. He gives multiple choices questions and 25 percentage of homework. If you get D+ he would give you C.
Hes very easy. 25 percentage on home work.
Mr Thomass lectures are pretty hard because he just works problems from the book instead of actually explaining the work in good detail and be ready for lots of online homework I wouldnt recommend any trigonometry students to take his class unless you took precal in high school.
There's a lot of homework. He gives out a review sheet for tests. He even has review days. on the review day, he literally reads from the test. No prof I've ever had in college has done that.. Overall, pretty good. Yes, he is quiet but it doesn't hinder learning. He allows questions & is always willing to go over stuff after class too.
Bad professor if you care about your grade do not take!!!!!!!!!gives a lot of homework some that he doesnt even cover You can barely hear his lectures and his voice can put you to sleep. If math isnt your best subject do not take you will have to teach yourself.
Do NOT take this professor!! He teaches only one way, and expects you to follow along even if hes going too fast. I wish I read more about this professor before I signed up for the class. Im 2 months in, and I already dropped his class. He also teaches out of the textbook, theres no examples that we students would understand.
Not the best professor I've encountered, bored by the lecture, make sure not to skip any classes otherwise you won't be able to keep up. Speaks very softly and uninterested. Your usual I-Don't-Want-To-Go-To-School professor. Had better professors who motivated me to actually learn. Tons of homework.
sweet man, yea you cant lack in this class at all. Just dont skip and be on point with online homework. I passed his class with a 90 and I dont even like math.
omg. it was terrible with me. if i can chose again. i wont take his class forever
Lots of homework doesn't even begin to describe. 50 assignments with over 20 questions each. The review assignments have over 40 questions and the intro assignments have 60 - 80 questions. These aren't easy questions either. Each question takes 2-3 minutes (if you know what you are doing) and we learn 2 chapters per class. Doesn't teach well either
The worst thing that has ever happened to me so far' was this statistic class, horrible lectures, tough grading (doubting about school start here) if you are not ready to be frustrated then don't take this man, my one cent advice.
I went in without any preconceived notions of what his class might be like. He requires an access code for online homework which you have to pay for. He is quite monotone, and even aggressive to some students. He explains the material well enough and the homework is good practice. Graphing calculator is required, lots of calculator work. Meh
Stay away, do not make the same mistake as I did. Took him for MATH 2320, differential equations. A course which spends majority of it's focus on calculation and applying the correct method. John Thomas does not care about any of that, his exams are all multiple choices which makes NO SENSE for a math course. He's here literally to collect checks.
I enjoyed him, but he didn't give out notes in class. You are really going to have to fend for yourself when it comes to making a good grade in his class
Speaks Low even when sitting in front row . He works problems from the book instead of teaching. his reactions when students ask for help discourages you from asking yourself Must be good in math because he solves problems on board instead of teaching how to get an answer. have to purchase myitlab to do homework but its due on the last day of class
Honestly his reviews on here don't do him justice. There is a lot of homework on Pearson, but it's manageable if you pace yourself. The class before the test, he literally spends the class period doing problems from the test. Easiest math class I have ever taken, and I'm a junior in engineering. Grading: HW - 25%, Exam- 50%, Final- 25%
Professor Thomas isnt a bad professor, however, his class is horrible and hard. He doesn't fully teach, he just write stuff on the board and thats it. I would recommend avoiding this class unless you want to fail.
Take notes out of book, Do homework online, go home study for Test, Test Review has everything on the test. Not a hard class but not so easy either lol. I'd take him again. Seems like a easygoing professor. I got a C in his class. (Felt like it should've been a B)
He just writes what's on the textbook on the board and calls it a day, everyday. HW everyday. About 4 or 5 major tests through the semester. He rarely explains clearly when students are confused. In this class you will basically be left to teach yourself with the textbook because his lectures are no help. He is also very quiet when speaking.
The comments are quite harsh toward him I think. He's an old school professor but if you take good notes and pay attention then you'll be fine. Online homework is enormous so you have to learn to manage your time and then it'll be doable. Exams are based on his in-class problems and on the review day he'll let you know what will be on the test!
Statistic is not a hard subject, but I felt like he is making this difficult. Because of COVID, I took online classes and he gives one chapter of a quiz every week. So you HAVE TO read 60+ pages for 10 questions quiz. And A lot of homework that's due before the final exam. However, homework has an average of 50 questions :))
He is old school but knows what he's teaching. This class isn't easy but you will come out knowing the subject. The homework is a lot but manageable, the professor stays till the last minute and makes sure no one has any more questions before leaving. Just stay on task and be vocal if you don't understand anything.
He's a good teacher, but he's also really quiet. He's also really nice and will answer your questions after your class, but if you're going to take a class of his make sure it's in person because you'll end up like me just not retaining anything. Here's hoping I pass.
Do not take his class! He does not explain concepts well and doesn't really respond well to problems students have.
The homework was overwhelming. Everything had lockdown including some homework assignments and practice quizes. When asked a question, he speaks in poetic ways instead of explaining.
Don't take Linear Algebra in a 5 week course - it's an important subject and Prof. Thomas does not teach it effectively in this format. He issues the same amount of work as a full semester courseload. Credit where it's due though, it was a well documented class - everything was posted properly (if inconsiderately).
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THIS COURSE. he is the worst and cold heart(does not care about student mental health), and mumbles, could not understand him. will barely help you with homework even when you email him. Also, I don't think he likes people from different backgrounds as him( maybe it is just my perception)
He's not really a professor. All his assignments are premade by the textbook publisher. In class, he just reads the textbook and runs through examples. Also, you get assigned a ridiculous amount of homework, but it's manageable if you aren't taking other time-consuming classes on the side. It's mostly busy work. He's just here to collect a check.
When it comes to teaching he tends to just write on the board and expects you to know where each number came from. He doesnt explain how to solve or the steps needed to solving. Its really learn it on your own while being assigned a ton of homework. If math is your strong subject than you will be fine but for all that it isnt, stay away.
The worst math teacher in Hcc
This teacher teaches like he trying to remind himself. If your forced to take this class, like I was, study the material of each day before going into class. He is very hard on tests and quizzes. He gives no curves on the class regardless of the class average.
My hell on earth was the statistics class with Professor Thomas. We had over 300 problems in homework for the week. He promised extra credit on Homework and gave none. I took him for 8 week course and I maybe slept 4 hours a night because up to 8 hours a day , each and every day i was dedicating to the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM, he needs to retire.
One of the few professors I have had so far that I would say is an actual expert in what he is teaching.
Professor Thomas had good lectures. I did need to find a tutor. His Tests were easy, and he was really stubborn in a way. I remember I had emailed him for a small extension on a quiz because my lockdown browser wouldn't open. He responded to me an hour after it was due and told me to contact the tech department.
