he is a good teacher. if you to class and pay attention you will do fine.he gives small quizzes that come from the labs. he gives extra credit to help you.he is really interested in bio and we got to see an open cadaver, which was cool. he is good.
Very knowledgeable and interested in biology. You will learn a lot! Pay attention/take good notes, read the book and you should be fine.
1/2 the class failed his 1st test gave a part2 take home 2nd test the class average was a little bit higher but no offer of a take home for students having a hard time Did not follow his own syllabus Didnt know if its was his 1st semester @SWC or @ all!? DO NOT TAKE HIM - YOULL REGRET IT!
Great Teacher, Hard class, but good teacher
EASY TEACHER. had him for BIO LAB. Go to class, do the lab and then study the lab. the quizzes were simple..its from the lab, duh! haha. got an A. take him!
This teacher is very helpful, very nice, and more that willing to help in learning the material. he made the material so easy to understand. I took biology before and had trouble understanding it, but when I took his class it made more sense.

his first sem. teaching this subject. Always has gray areas in his tests. 3/4 of class dropped due to failing. Class could've been fun, but he stresses everyone out. Tests are always 100 questions and 2 essays. Try and take with someone else. He is kinda full of himself too.
Smart man knows his stuff. Hes very passionate about biology. Although, his class was hard and not exciting.
Dr. Tolli is the best teacher in the history of life. He makes his classes interesting and he tries to help you when you need it. I would really recommend him. On the plus side, he is GORGEOUS!!! Which will make you really look forward to his class. =]
Last class @ SW...so i'm glad that I ended up with Prof Tolli. I've had some really bad teachers here...either too difficult or way too easy about so it was a breath of fresh air to get someone that knew the subject and got the point across without making you stay up all hours figuring out what they meant!!! Helpful & gives extra credit too!!!
Dr. Tolli's class is interesting, though you have to study a lot for the tests. It was not an easy A; by far the hardest class I took all semester, but I also learned a lot. I'd also like to point out that the man is also totally hot.
extremely intimidating.
MICROBIO is a tough subject. Tolli definitely takes the time to teach it and to really make sure you understand the concepts. He gives lots of extra credit and rarely any homework. He drop a test & a quiz at the end to boost your grade up. Plus labs are really fun!
awesome awesome teacher, works with you not against you
Best Mirco teacher!! fun and easy.. stick to the study guide and you'll pass. labs are fun. easy HW and easy presentation! quiz question are similar to test questions! take him!
The material is difficult but as long as you read the book and study you should do alright. His study guides are helpful as are his quizzes. I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher if you are not interested in biology. Powerpoint lectures and four exams. Drops lowest exam score as well.
Great teacher, but you really have to read. Recommend reading before every new lecture. Study a lot, you'll get an A, it's not impossible. He's funny and knows what he's talking about.
Take him, he's good. But you must like biology. Drops lowest score. I learned a lot! =D
Very nice man, the class is just VERY VERY challenging because it is a lot of in depth information. Take this class in semester with easy classes bc it will occupy all your time....unless you are a bio major then it will probably be a walk in the park.
Use quiz and study guide to study for exams. Many exam questions are almost verbatim from chapter review questions & quizzes. You get a 3x5 note card for the exams and your lowest quiz and exam score are dropped. Exams are two short answer essays (5 pts each) and 90 mult choice. He's really nice and always available at every open lab he schedules.
This class was challenging but Dr. Tolli helps you out when you need it. I found that reading the book while going over the lecture notes really helped. Gives a lot of extra credit (especially for a bio class). The unknown project is what REALLY helped my grade in the class. I would recommend this teacher/class. Thanks Dr. Tolli!!!
best teacher i've had @ SWC!! he's very helpful and tries to work with you to make sure you pass the class. funny guy and he is nowhere near intimidating!!! oh yeah, make sure your cell is OFF during class, if it rings.. you gotta bring the whole class something to eat!
Just like previous comments, Dr. Tolli is very helpful and you must keep up with your reading and do well on each quiz because it can hurt you a bit if you don't. And of course do well on your tests as well. Use extra credits and lowest test/quiz as your last reserve. I highly recommend Dr. Tolli b/c he's helpful and teaches well.
Dr. Tolli constantly reminds students that this is an upper division college course. Be prepared to work.
Great professor! Very helpful. You have to study because it is a lot of material. Pop quizzes so attendance is mandatory.
Professor Tolli is very nice and very helpful. The class was easy as long as you study the material. Attendance is important because he gives pop quizzes.
Tolli is an amazing Prof.! I was not a huge fan of Biology, but he made me have a greater interest in it. His class is tough but manageble as long as you read the text and listen to the lectures. Everything for the test and quizzes are in his lecture and the text. And he gives lots of extra credit. Take his class!!!
I think he is not very helpful. If you miss class heads will roll. I worked very hard just to get an average grade.
Prof. Tolli is a good man but a BAD instructor. the exams are way to hard for a Bio 100 calss. Since he is a Dr. he expects everyone to be on his level. I strongly recomend a diffrent teacher.
Very knowledgable but not personable. Wants you to ask questions but makes you feel dumb when you do. Take home pop quizzes, great for studying. Pretty simple class, you just need to read and study the text and you'll do fine. It's obvious Tolli is Athiest, don't let it get to you if you have any faith. He will indirectly challenge it.
Tolli is a really great guy who teaches a subject I don't care for in a way that made me enjoy being in class. He's a really friendly guy! Roll isn't taken, but he gives your "take-home" quizzes randomly, so it's best to be in class. Tests are easy if you fill out his study guide and make the most out of your notecard he allows!
Prof Tolli is an asset to Biology & specially SWC. His methods of teaching sets his students for SUCCESS!!!! His class was not easy nor difficult, the key is motivation. He is very helpful & cares about his students. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ANY STUDENTS TO TAKE HIM FOR BIO 265. BEST TEACHER FOR THIS CLASS!!!!
Dr. Tolli is a cool, laid back teacher. Loves what he does and explains things really well. Gives you a lot of opportunity to do well in the class. Definately a must take!
Great teacher! Crystal clear. The man is an MIT grad. Read the book. MAKE SURE to have SMART table mates in the lab! He gives so much gimmies to improve your grade. I learned to like him..at first, he seemed like a smug, but he is nice overall.
I hated biology in high school but now after taking Tolli for Bio 101 I realize that it was just the way it was taught to me by my lousy high school teacher. Tolli teaches the subject very enthusiastically which makes me interested as well; you can tell he has a lot of passion for it. He's very good at explaining concepts and makes class fun.
Read the chapters assigned, follow the study guide and show up to class for his lectures/lab. And make sure you ask questions if you don't get something he's lectured on! Not an easy subject but Dr. Tolli makes it significantly easier to understand and exams are very straightforward.
Hands down the best teacher at Southwestern. Take him for biology and you will learn a great deal as well as get a good grade, so long as you show up for lectures and do the required reading. Although he doesn't take attendance, he will give out quizzes without letting you know ahead of time so it's a good idea to show up every day.
Nice teacher. Sometimes goes fast in lecture, but is willing to help you via email and office hours, I recommend going. Science is not really my thing but he made it fun. He makes you laugh from time to time and you can earn extra points on review days for exams playing Bio Jeopardy. I highly recommend him.
I highly recommend this teacher if you want an A in microbiology. The class is hard but he is a great teacher and gives you tons of extra credit to help improve your grade. He also drops your lowest test at the end of the semester. He is a must take for nursing majors!
Awesome teacher, made the class and lectures very easy to understand, is almost always available to help out durring office hours. Drops 2 lowest quiz scores and lowest test score, quizes are take home, lecture notes and study guides are always posted online. easy if you are willing to put in the time yourself to understand the subject and tests.
great class. makes micro interesting. as long as you read and pay attention to lecture u should get an A. take home test. lots of extra credit. he's always willing to help you out.
tolli is amazing! take him. i did not like him at first but he forced me to work hard and i am so thankful and would highly recommend taking his class. i loved looking at the sparkle in his eyes!
I have to admit, I really didn't know what I was getting into when I registered for this class. He teaches at a real college level. His A&P class was very challenging but I had to conquer him! To this day I still have his lectures saved and can't seem to delete them from my recorder. Very good teacher. He explains things really well. Exotic!!!!
Great teacher he keeps you entertain and he is really helpful... Plus Haw-tee.. ;)
Great teacher. He definitely knows what he's talking about. He's not an easy A, but as long as you attend lecture and read the chapters you'll get an A. You have to actually try to do the work. If your lazy then I don't recommend taking him.
Okay, just finished this fall semester. Dr. Tolli is an awesome professor with a doctorate from MIT that feels honored to teach us at SWC, he's definitely not a pretentious prick. He teaches on a college level, I have a bachelors degree and found the class challenging yet doable. I have to admit I crushed on him the whole semester...cutie!
Good proffesor.Teaches the class in a whole new way, enchanting and charming. However, don't get distracted with him because although his notes help a little bit.You have to read the book, study all the time, and find time for group work, tutoring or ask him questions in class or on his office hours.
I had no idea what i was getting into when i took this class but im really glad i did. i hated all science until i took tollis class.i def. reccomend him!
Hard class, professor is boring and sarcastic, lots of studies, homework and the tests are really challenging
This class requires extreme amounts of studying. You'll have to memorize the lectures, powerpoints, quizzes and textbook for exams. He is a great teacher, but he's very sarcastic and although he encourages questions, he'll make you regret asking any. Zero patience and a lot of religion bashing. Quizzes help your overall grade, so try to ace them.
AWESOME TEACHER. I TOOK SOME TIME OFF SCHOOL (2 YEARS) AND HE WAS MY FIRST CLASS BACK.I TOOK TOLLI FOR THE SUMMER SEMESTER AND GOT AN A. HES NOT EASY BUT IF YOU DO HIS STUDY GUIDES AND READ THE CHAPTER BEFORE CLASS YOU WILL HAVE TO NO PROBLEM. I CANT WAIT TO TAKE HIM AGAIN FOR BIO 265 NEXT SEMESTER!
I took him for summer lab, he's a great instructor! Funny guy and very straight forward. Lab is super easy, he just quizzes you the next meeting on what you did, but remember to study or at least remember what you learned!
I got an A in his class. Dr Tolli is a super helpful teacher but this is truly not an easy A class. Tests have 100 questions. If you want to challenge yourself, take his class.I highly don't recommend this class for those who want to take an easy general class because you will end up with a C or W.
This course for Bio is extremely difficult. You really have to study hard and memorize everything to pass this class. His test are usually around 100 questions everytime. If youre lazy I dont recommend anyone taking this class.
Prof.Tolli made microbiology very interesting. He can be sarcastic but don't take it to the heart. Although his test are difficult, he will definately help you out if you have any questions. Labs were fun too!
This class is HARD! you will have to study you butt off, you cant just memorize b/c that is useless for his exams, you have to actually understand how everything works! He has gotten a lot harder than before. You will have to study for hours to get a good grade. Lab is very fun, loved finding unknowns. But Tolli is a good professor, just not easy!
You MUST STUDY FOR THIS CLASS! I'm the master of winging it, but this class demands attention. I got to retake it. He makes himself available, but seems most people didn't take it. over half the class withdrew or failed no BS. Good luck if you take him.
Microbiology is no joke, this class was really challenging. I actually found it harder than anatomy. His lectures are straightforward and straight from the textbook. His exams are quite difficult, and you really have to think outside the box and not just memorize the material. Lab is fun and Tolli is always willing to lend a helping hand. STUDY!!
Also had him for BIOL 190. HIGHLY recommended! 4 exams, 1 final, all non-cumulative. 7 take-home quizzes. Lowest test & quiz scores dropped but can't drop the final. Lecture slides provided on BlkBoard. Very structured, straightfwd class. He's helpful but also wants you to trust your observations in lab instead of always asking for his opinion. :)
Dr. Tolli is a great professor. He made the material interesting. He wants you to fully understand the concepts so STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!!
if youre taking his class, be prepared to study. learn the material and understand it thoroughly. he rarely offers extra credit so take advantage of completing quizzes, hw assignments, and scoring well on tests. do not take him or his class lightly! if you have questions, ask. hes always available. take advantage of it....
A and P 1 was very hard. His quiz questions are on the tests so keep them and use to study. Double check your quizes and tests because we found several questions that were marked wrong but our answers were right. Challenged him and we got the points. His questions can be tricky. Material on study quides were not always on tests. Anatomy is easiest
Dr. Tolli's class is interesting but insane hard! I could answer the questions in the back of the book no problem, but yet his questions where nothing like the book's. I spent 2 years knocking out pre-req's for acceptance into a program & all I needed is this one class.. this guy crushed my GPA and hopes of getting into a program. Beware..
I'm a straight A student and study very hard, but he makes this class harder than what it really is. His test and quiz questions are very confusing. I do NOT recommend this professor at all he will only hurt your GPA.
SURE! Everyone knows Biology is actually easy, and not complex at ALL. The PROFESSOR is the one who makes it hard. Geez. Just study the material and try to learn something, already. It's what you signed up for! (BTW...you earn your GPA. It is a measure of your performance.)
Incredibly Inteligent professor; if you have a general interest in the subject. His teaching goes hand-in-hand with is exams & Quizes(ALL take home, some questions on exam so keep them + he drops lowest one) I barely studied but did the minimum work and still got a B. Always available for questions & understanding of emergency situations.
HE IS A GREAT PROFFESSOR IF YOU ARE WILLING TO LEARN HE IS THERE TO HELP YOU. BUT IF YOU ARE LAZY DON'T TAKE HIM. YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH IF YOU APPLY YOURSELF. LAB WAS MY FAVORITE PART. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING DR. TOLLI BEST BIO CLASS EVER. THE TEST ARE NOT EASY BUT IT DEPENDS ON YOU HE GIVES ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED TO PASS THE CLASS.
Dr. Tolli is the best! He gives you the chance and opportunity to pass the course. He finds every reason in this world to give you extra credit. He gives extra credit when you submit possible exam questions; extra credit when you submit your last lab report on time; when you donate blood, etc. I advise all to take his class. He is the best!!!!!!
Tolli is an awesome professor! Explains everything clearly and relates topics to everyday life. He makes class fun! He's really smart and knows what he's talking about. Reading the textbooks isn't mandatory, but it's wise to read them because some questions on the tests come from the book and his lectures. Recommend 100% if you want to learn :D
Dr. Tolli's is very smart and he will make you work hard. I bombed the first test but worked hard throughout the semester and ended up with a B. He knows biology and will always answer your questions. Bio190 is not an easy class but if you study from the beginning you'll be good. He gave us EC for donating blood.
awesome teacher! Makes you feel dumb though. tests are easy. Unknown was easy. only idiots fail.plus he's kinda hot. not like that matters
Not the best teacher I've ever had. Lecture feels like it drags on for hours. Despite studying the study guide, power points, and reading every chapter, I still did poorly on the tests, if it not for the extra credit I don't think anyone would pass. If you care about your GPA, or want to like your teacher, take Micro with someone else!
He only reads off a powerpoint! Makes the class extremely boring
Doesn't care if you come to class, but you should. He sometimes give take home quizzes at the top of class. Lecture is also important. Provides in depth explanations and examples during lecture, so you can't just copy off the power point and expect to get a good grade. Go to his office hours if you need help. Open to questions. Best teacher!!!!
Take home quizzes. Long lectures. Study a lot, tests are tough. Take advantage of extra credit it's about 30 points. Write down every lab step, he explains briefly and makes you feel dumb for asking to clarify a step afterwards. When writing your lab reports, spellcheck and check your grammar, he's not an English teacher but he will dock you.
Dr. Tolli's class is not as difficult as I thought it would be. Textbook is a must have. You have to study and actually read the material to do well on his exams. He gives chances so everyone can pass. Offers take home quizzes and extra credit if you donate blood. Not only is Tolli super hot, but, he is there to help if you have questions. (:
Professor Tolli is a very good professor. He is genuinely interested in seeing his students do well. He makes Labs go by quickly by playing music during lab while we Gram stain! I highly recommend him for Micro. If you come to class and turn in all homeworkquizzes you should do well!
Dr. Tolli is a great professor. He is incredibly intelligent and you can tell he really enjoys what he does. He makes the class so interesting and labs are so much fun! He's very sarcastic and the most easy-going professor. This class is an easy A as long as you actually do the work. I would take him again, no doubt.
Very professional. Great professor. Lets you know what is expected, but read and study. Received and A, I earned it.
He's very intimidating at first, but once you get to know him, you'll find out that he's a cool guy. You have to work hard for an A. Not an easy class, but I learned a lot. Would recommend him if you are willing to put in the effort and time.
Cool guy! His the hippy kind of professor that teaches straight to the point! Like literally, if you don't get I dunno what's wrong with you LOL. Prepare to absorb all info you learn because exams are very book based!
Took Dr. Tolli for Micro over the summer. Very very intelligent. Test are VERY book based so be ready to read. Lab is fun buy the lab manual it will help you in the long run. Super funny& very knowledgable ! I would definitely recommend him. He's pretty goodlooking if you need that kind of motivation ;)
If you're serious about passing DO NOT fall behind on reading and ask him questions, he might go off on a tangent but he is still pretty good imo.
Professor Tolli is so awesome! He loves what he does and his intelligence can be intimidating. I took his class over summer, and I never enjoyed a science lab so much until I took his. He is very helpful when it comes to understanding the material, so don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Be ready to study the material after each lecture!
Greatest Biology professor ever. His lectures are thorough, your textbook is online. He gives extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester and whatever is on the exam is everything he has gone over in class there are no tricks. Actually wants you to succeed and pass the class. If you put in the time and effort, he's willing to help.
I think you get what you give in his class, 100%. He's very clearly an extremely intelligent man. Considers your questions thoughtfully. Allows you to work in a professional environment while still teaching you. I would take him again in a heartbeat. You'll learn a lot, but you'll work. Show up and pay attention. That's it.
Me Tolli is an amazing teacher! If you care, he cares. Go to his office hours if you don't get something, he is always willing to help and responds to emails quickly. His tests are a little on the harder side, but if you study hard, you will pass. He puts bio concepts in real life situations, which make it easier to understand! Defiantly recommend
Awesome professor. Very intelligent. Grading criteria is very clear. Tests are very book based and a textbook is a must. I took this class over summer and got an A. There was a presentation, unknown lab report, and extra credit opportunities that were fair! He had us give blood for extra credit, I can't complain! He's willing to help if needed.
