Absolutely a wonderful teacher. He helps all of his students Kind, caring, and extremely fair. Plenty of time to help, off. hrs, email. Responds to emails, and helps as much as he can. Great teacher. I would take again. Funny, helpful, undertanding. Good memory with names. Awesome.

Mr. Toth is a nice guy although his grading scale is a bit tough. He would frequently tell me that my writing is excellent during conferences yet I would still receive B's and the occasional C on papers. He claims a C is a "good and respectable grade". The entire class is based on California.

He is a really nice guy but if you want an A he's not the teacher to take. I hope you like California.

Mr. Toth is a cool guy. He's a lot of fun and he wants you to enjoy the class. He assign a lot of reading though, so if you read slow you might want to think twice.

John Toth is an excellent professor who is very explicit in his instructions on an assignment. He is always available for his students, office hours are remarkable. He is very detailed yet teaches you about poetry, short stories, and plays. His class requires A LOT, A LOT, A LOT of reading w/reading responses, papers, etc. Great guy though!

I don't like English, and I loved his classes. As with most classes that are worthwhile - you must do your work and come to class - but if you do both of those, you'll be fine. He is also an advisor for Aplha Iota - I was in that club - and I can tell you he's a great guy, and alot of fun to hang out with and talk to.

I'm the one who doesn't like English . . . I loved this class too - it was a summer class, and so the readings were enough to drive me batty - but it was totally worth every ounce of effort!!

I enjoyed english 101 so much because he made it interesting and we were able to write on interesting topics...102 wasnt as much fun but he's a great teacher

This class has tons of reading and alot of homework. I hate english. But he is a great teacher, very helpful, he will make time for you and is just an all around nice guy. He also respects student opions. Even with all the work I enjoyed this class and learned more in it than any other english class I have taken. THANKS TOTH!

He gives a lot of reading and essays but he always asks you your opinion of the reading and if you dont understand he will say it in terms you do understand he is mostly helpful. I recommend this class to anyone he tries to make jokes but sometimes they arent very funny but its funny how he tries...lol overall good teacher

I had never liked english before taking this class. Professor Toth promotes constant improvement but he does it in a very positive and encouraging way. He also goes out of his way to help his students. He's a great teacher.

I would Highly recommend Mr. Toth. His lectures are easily understood and full of examples. If you dislike homework assignments then you may want to avoid his classes. They are short but frequent and if you skipped them they would quickly add up. He is also willing to explain things and cover things outside of class as well if need be.

i didnt particularly like him. he does these essay conferences and they were pointless. he would read my paper then tell me it was "good" then just look at me like i was retarded. i thought he did this to everyone but this other kid said he told him exactly what to correct. the papers i felt i did good on i didnt. i was in honors engl. in hs too.

Extremely helpful and a very nice guy. Book is used very often for the reading responses due every week. Homework is very simple. Group projects easy to do. Three papers and three in class written exams. Overall a fun and easy class.

As for being in the class itself I thought he made it really fun, knows how to take (& make) a joke often & tries to keep you involved. I'd recommend him for sure!

I took John Toth's English 097 class my first year of college back in 2013. Out of my 4 years attending AVC hands down my favorite professor. Very passionate about his work and wants to make sure you pass as well as learn.

Mr. Toth is the best professor I have ever had. His class was both challenging and interesting at the same time. I enjoyed the 2 books we read. They were both very relatable. You wont pass if you don't do the work.

Took his 8 week class. Must stay on reading assignments or you wont pass. SUPER helpful teacher, cares about students passing. DON'T take him for granted!!! no quizzes. 4 out class essays & 4 in class. & 100 word response to chapter readings. 3 books used. gives time to turn in work. 1 pass for late work. SO MUCH PRINTING!!!!!!! Don't arrive late.

He is a bit of a tough grader (100% does not exist on his papers) but gives great feedback. I looked forward to his class every week.

I really enjoyed take a semester with this instructor. He was clear on what was required and motivated everyone in class. He involved the class by having each student read from the books we used in class. He has a great personality and was professional. He did not hesitate to talk to student to let them know where they stood in class.

I really enjoyed this class. I took this course to improve my writing and I was not disappointed. Participation is key in Professor Toth's class. There is a lot of writing assignments but if you keep up they are very easy to complete. He is also very approachable and likes when students ask question. I learned a lot and I'm now taking next class

Professor Toth is really easy going and caring. He made it easy to participate and engage in the lectures. His assignments are straight to the point, and he always made himself available outside of the classroom if anyone needed help. Dont be scared by the daily readings, just do it! Show up and participate. You wont regret it.

He is entertaining, read 4 books but it didn't feel like alot. Open to office hours. Answers questions. Likes to have class discussions. Easy final, i mean put in the work but truly nothing hard for a presentation. Recommend for sure.

I struggled with English/writing essays in high school but he made it really understandable. You have to read in this class but the novels he chose were really interesting. Probably one of the best English classes I've ever taken and I'm actually learning how to write. I would definitely take his class again & recommend it to others too.

I took this over summer session and he was a super chill professor and made it easy to communicate or get in contact with him. You only need to get 2 novels for the course.

Anyone who says his class was not easy was clearly not trying whatsoever. He is an incredible professor. You will have to write a lot, but it is easier than you might think. He cares about every single student, and he is very easy to approach. No tests, just a lot of writing. Nothing too difficult, just takes time to perfect.

Many complain about his assignments- but this is a college class, you need to apply yourself! He even takes the time to make conferences w/ EVERY SINGLE student to help guide you in your bigger papers. Almost weekly you need a reading response but it is not hard it is all your opinion. Only 2 big essays and an APA Research, if you can plz take him!

Professor Toth is one of the best English professors I have ever had! He teaches to help students succeed, and he is willing to do one-on-one conferences with any student who requests it. His workload, in my opinion, is normal for a college-level class, and he grades fairly. He is also open to references! I HIGHLY recommend him as an instructor.

I had Mr. Toth for my first semester in Fall 2020 online. There is a lot of writing involved in his class, but it is very simple with clear instructions. Most, if not all the stories he assigns to read are very interesting. He cares a lot about his students and is attentive to his emails. He's funny too! Also, he has a pass / no pass system.

Mr. Toth was an excellent English teacher and always made sure you understood the assignments. Get ready to write essays and read 3-4 books. During each essay, he will have a meeting with each student just to discuss your progress or any struggles you may have. Most essays were just 3 pages but the final was a 6 page essay. No tests.

There is a lot of homework in his class, but it is all easy. It gets overwhelming, but just stay on top of it. He does a fair amount of group work, lots of slideshows, and he is a clear instructor in my opinion. Wants to help his students. Flexible with deadlines.

Theres no test or quizzes in this class just A LOT of writing , but you get used to it. Really nice , gives good feedback, helps you with the work, I would totally take his class again.

For someone who hates and struggles with English, Professor Toth made English so easy for me. Its a pretty easy class , a lot of homework but you kind of get used to it after a while, he is so understanding, lets you talk about your own opinion, no tests or exam just a lot of writing. All I can say is that you should totally take this class!!

Toth is great! I hate everything about English but his chill and caring personality makes it bearable. He's not strict and very understanding and will help you with anything you need. There's a lot of writing (understandably) but it becomes manageable after a while. His class was the only class I didn't have to stress about the whole semester.

Professor Toth is the sweetest man I have ever met. He truly cares about his students and strives to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable. He said as long as we turned in our work within a week of the due date he wouldn't take off points for it being late, and if we needed more time he was more than willing to accommodate.

Amazing lectures and very accessible in office hours, he cancels class the week there is an essay due to meet and give feedback. Very clear grading criteria, lots of reading! Kind person, and extremely lenient about turning in work late (and with no point deduction). As someone who excelled in high school English, this class CHALLENGED me. I did feel that I came out of this class a more efficient writer. Best advice I can give you, pay very close attention to the feedback he gives you during conferences. Just trust me.

Professor Toth is an amazing professor in the way that he really cares about his students and he is very understanding of people's situations. He is a clear grader and only assigns 3 major essays. As long as you keep up with the book reading you will do great in this class.

This class did have a lot of work and reading but he explained everything in detail numerous times and is such a kind person that cares about his students. I recommend you keep up with reading because it will catch up to you. And he gives you an extra week for your assignments and is always glad to help you out during class or in office hours.

Although he expect a lot out of paper you do have to try because that's most important thing to him is that you try. He's a great teacher to take but know that his work is pretty heavy.

Toth's ENG101 is challenging but manageable. Lots of writing assignments, but he provides helpful feedback. Staying organized and using resources like Unstuck ai can make this class rewarding.

I took Mr.Toth during 2024 fall and I took ENG 101 and his class was pretty easy as well had to do was read 2 books and do projects. Be careful though as he does give alot of homework, but even if you make a deadline, he gives you one more week past it. Very nice and flexible teacher.

As a high school sophomore,I was scared but he made the class feel welcoming and easy to manage. -very understanding and patient -don't procrastinate and you'll do good! -generous with grading and deadlines -gives really helpful feedback! he always made sense and helped me understand -great personality :) He's funny and approachable, best teacher

He's very flexible and accommodating with papers, gives an extra week to finish assignments, and gives great feedback! Be sure to pay attention to when he talks about a quiz, he gives tips about what it'll be. Overall he's a fun teacher to have and a great help if you're in a pickle writing a paper!

Great professor overall, though one thing I'd say is I would definitely not recommend taking this course if you're looking for an easy grade, 4 essays are assigned throughout the semester and one can make or break your grade, overall he provides great resources and feedback of the essays turned in NOTE: 2 books are read during the course

I had John Toth for English102 while I was taking other hard classes, and this class was a breath of fresh air. We read through books and poems like nobodies business, but he was very kind to our class. 3 essays required, and he gives good feedback to them as well.
