He's a GREAT chem teacher!
Very helpful and an awesome teacher! For explicit.
Awesome teacher...does his best to make sure you understand!! LOVE HIM !!!!!
Ehh, he's ok, but a bit too enthusiastic for me. And he calls on random people and makes you look like an idiot by staring at you for a good minute if you don't know.
Dr. T is the man! He will definatly keep you entertained. He's high on energy and willing to help anyone who askes! He wasnts to see everyone do well.
wonderful professor. very helpful. makes time for everyone. i highly recommend him, but it still takes a lot of studying for the student's part
The class was extremely hard, but I must admit that he was always willing to help and was really understanding about illnesses.
He is a very energetic man and he tries to make chemistry as fun as it can be. His tests are very hard! You definately have to do alot of studying if you want to get good grades.
Great Teacher!!! ALthought most of his che 103 and che 104 classes are at 8 in the morning
he is the coolest!
Breaks things down very well! His tests are thorough and he grades the same. Attend class to understand what is going on. I walk away everyday with so much more essential knowledge. Take his class and your get a better understanding of chemistry.
even tho I studied two weeks in advance for his tests, went to office hours, and did the homework and i still have a d in the class, he is the best teacher! He is a good teacher... IF you understand chemistry!

I really like Dr. Townsend, I did better in his class than in any other. He explains things so they actually make sense. He's the short, and loud professor that you hear in the halls of Schmucker.
tough man to impress, doens't believe in A's for students teachers, I did everything he asked and still recieved an A-, not a person though
If you like Mr. Holland's Opus youll love Townsend. Just watch out for the multiple choice on his tests.
his tests are hard but he is good in lecture- so take good notes and do the suggested homework problems, because he takes some of them and puts them on tests and quizzes.. he's kind of a hard grader too (multiple choice are very tricky and worth a lot)
Dr. Townsend is a very good professor. He actually makes the class fun becasue he is very energetic. he breaks the material down step by step so that you're able to understand. He is also very approachable and willing to give help when needed.
Even though he only teaches the class at 8AM if you're not totally against morning's he's worth taking because his tests are easy compared to the other chem 103 teachers. Plus, he's good at explaining things and tries to get to know everyone on a personal level.

great teacher with lots of energy! about the best you get for a leture class, breaks down topics, and powerpoints are used which are great notes. very helpful out of class and an all around good teacher
The best guy in the chemistry department. Too good to explain!
townsend a cool teacher but is hard as hell. one of his tests this semester(fall 2007) was 7 PAGES LONG! study alot and often. be prepared for the worst class of the year
cool guy but HARD. tests are very hard. especially the first one. BEWARE!
cool guy but HARD. tests are very hard. especially the first one. BEWARE!
He is an awful teacher! Very hard and does not give out ANY study guides! And you have to figure out what is on the test. All he does is read off slides. He is very little help with questions. You have a better chance at teaching yourself!
Dr.T's chem 104 class is a challenging course, but he is so helpful if you take the time to go and see him. His tests can be difficult so make sure to do lots of practice problems from the lectures and hmwk assignments and go and see him if something needs clarification. But he is a very good prof for chem 104 and probably one of the best to pick.
This is a hard class that takes a lot of time and effort.Dr. Townsend's test were very hard, but reasonable I guess.A lot of information was included on each test.He is a good guy, and does teach very well. You have to be very determinded to get an A in this class.I didn't study nearly enough, and I just barely passed.
Chem isnt very interesting...but he's not bad. He's very energetic which makes it a little better. Study his slides and you'll be fine. Also the lab makes your grade go way up!
Can you saw slowwwwwwwww? He teaches in depth, but is always behind the other professors when the ACS finals come around. Be ware... he doesnt cover all the material thats on the final, but you are still expected to know it
Dr.T is awesome! He really wants to get to know his students. He was always more than willing to help me when I needed it. His class is pretty easy, just pay attention to the labs cause they pop up on the test. Do the practice questions he assigns, they are on the test.
At the beginning of the semester I thought he was a cool guy, but come to find out....he isnt! He gets snappy and even snatchy when you work until he calls time up on the exams. Took THREE weeks to grade one of our tests. (I guess he's slow at everything). And when you ask him about it... he makes all kinds of excuses.
Fun prof and fun class. he teaches with easy to follow slideshows which he posts on blackboard. his jokes are corny but i loved them. doesnt take attendance, i skipped a lot but made sure i read the txtbook of what i missed. study his posted slides, read the book, and PRACTICE the hw problems tht deal with math and its a breeze. made the class easy
A very passionate teacher and a genuinely good guy. He is the kind of guy to make a test harder if he thinks you guys find it easy which is lame. He's approachable and very helpful at his office hours for the final exams.
He's really nice and helpful. Makes a lot of corny jokes that get old, but he tries. He doesn't use the textbook at all, he uses his powerpoint slides. Make sure that you go over the completion problems for the exams. They are worth a lot of points. Pretty easy class overall.
eh, hes alright
I had never had chemistry before...even in high school and I ended up with an A in the class. He teaches everything to a T and is very upfront about the tests. Study your power point slides and all the problems he does on the board. Takes a while to grade tests but gives tons of partial credit. Take him if you aren't too good at Chem.
Very Good Professor. Loves to teach.
Dr. Townsend is easily the best General Chemistry teacher at WCU. He explains everything clearly and has alot of enthusiasm for the subject. If you like chemistry you will love him. Even if you hate it, he is your best bet to understanding the material.
Dr. Townsend is the best professor I have had at West Chester yet. The only annoying thing is that not only do you have to buy his book, you have to buy his packet of powerpoint slides. It would be nicer if he posted them online. He teaches from the slides so if you don't buy them there is no way you would keep up in class. Overall, a good teacher
I've never been one for chemistry, and it showed in this class. His tests were definitely hard, so make sure to study. He was a great professor though, and will help you with any questions in the lab. The final definitely saved my grade.
He is a great teacher! He explains things very well, but chemistry is hard. You will have to work hard in order to do well. He assigns a lot of OWL, but most of it can be helpful.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A CHEM MAJOR!!!! its NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A GEN ED! i talked to mr. townsend (very nice guy)and he told me I basically got screwed because the board wont take this clas off the gen eds. its meant for science majors and you are supposed to know everything going into it. wasted money and time, i withdrew.
He's the coauthor your book. The man know what he's teaching and how to teach it. By far the best gen. chem teacher at WCU.
He's the co-author of your book. The man know what he's teaching and how to teach it. By far the best gen. chem teacher at WCU.
Townsend is the best gen chem professor! Come to class and pay attention to his lectures, complete the OWL assignments, and to problems in the book to do well onhis exams. He's great at responding to email, always willing to help via email or office hours. If you're a chem major, absolutely take him! He's a fair grader and prepares you for ACS.
very nice and helpful
Townsend if the man. Anyone who needs chem, take him. Though his exams can be tough, study hard and do the problems in the book because they're very similar. Complete the OWL and you have an easy
Townsend if the man. Anyone who needs chem, take him. Though his exams can be tough, study hard and do the problems in the book because they're very similar. Complete the OWL and you have an easy A for 15% of your grade. He prepares you for the ACS final well and also curves to match it. I started out rocky but ended with an A, absolutely possible
Dr. Townsend is a great professor. Chem was never my best subject in high school, but I am doing really well in the class now. Townsend has a great sense of humor also, so the class wasn't too boring.
Very friendly and funny guy. The material is not difficult at all if you put a little time in. The tests weren't bad at all. Attendance isn't mandatory but it'll make your life a lot easier. He is also a very good singer!
Its chem how easy can it be. He trys to make it as clear and simple as he can. I went to his office hours and they helped alot, I also had a tutor. He answered many of my questions! I wish I could take him for chem 2. If you don't understand chem or didn't have a good hs teacer take him!!
I want to say only good things about him because of how awesome he is in lecture, but I can't. This selfish d-bag assigns so much mandatory homework, it's like he isn't aware we have other classes. There are about 40 owl questions a week, and about 3 parts per question, meaning there are over 120 chemistry questions a week! wish I knew before.
His professor made me love Chemistry that much more, he was easy to talk to and answered all questions when asked. The OWl homeowrk we have is a bit much, but in all reality, if you don't understand the material, the practice helps. Plus those 3 hours to study for lecture, do your homework and you're set :) Best prof so far!!
WAY too much homework. Ended up retaking this class simply because my grade dropped so much from not being able to complete to absurd amount of chemistry homework per week (at least 10+ hours) It left no time for studying for tests or other classes and the homework really didn't help
This is my favorite professor at WCU. Dr Townsend is very enthusiastic about chemistry, and makes his classes very interesting. He does give homework, but it is very helpful for the exams. He is one of the authors of the text book. The homework only took 4 to 6 hours a week. I would totally recommend this professor. Dr T is great!!!
Most boring class ever. Completely made me hate chemistry. If you like teachers mumbling about god knows what and making the worse puns and jokes ever than this class is for you. The only saving grace is that attendance is not mandatory. Towards the end of the semester only a row of students kept coming back to the seemingly never ending boredom.
Dr. Townsend is an awesome professor. He is truly passionate about chemistry. He is very thorough in his lectures, all you have to do is go to class and listen, put in some extra time studying and you will do well. He's extremely approachable and really helpful during office hours! I would 100% recommend him over the other professors!
Chemistry is hard no matter who you have, but if you take Townsend it'll be your best chance at passing. He makes things very clear and simplifies them. Know the powerpoint slides and the review questions in them for the test. Final is a national test and very hard, but also curved.
He loves silly jokes but he's a good teacher. I highly recommend him and he will help you with homework if you go to his office hours.
Dr. Townsend is very knowledgable and nice! He goes very in depth with answers when you ask a question about something you do not understand. He's a tough grader when it comes to SIG FIGS. He does makes everything crystal clear in lecture & is repetitive but in a good way. He also rocks that Hawaiinfloral T-shirt every Friday. Overall great prof!
Professor Townsend is an amazing teacher. He makes stupid corny jokes to lighten the mood during hard lectures and he genuinely cares about his students. Chemistry is a really hard class but if you have to take it make sure its with him! He makes it easier to understand and he always answers questions and takes time to make sure you know it.
Dr. Townsend is a great teacher, if you don't understand something go to his office hours and you will walk out knowing what you're talking about. I wish he taught orgo because i would take him for that too.
Townsend is a wonderful man and a great teacher. He's super friendly, probably the most approachable professor I've had at WC. It's clear that he loves his job and he's very good at it. You WILL learn Chemistry if you take his class. I would take him for every Chemistry class if I could.
The homework is insane !!! begin it as soon as possible. No extra credit, but he will make extra time to help you understand material you dont get. TOUGH grader. will take off points for everything!!! no review. best way to study for his tests are doing the end of chapter problems in the book. if you get those you will get an A in the class.
I had this course my first semester freshmen year, so it was definetely a wake up call. He does "homework" practice problems and i suggest doing them, they often are reflective of the upcoming test. He also is very willig to work with disability students so long as you show effort, which is great.
Dr. Townsend is one of the sweetest professors I've had! He's enthusiastic about chemistry, cares about his students, and does his best to make the curriculum easy and interesting. The OWL assignments are frequent and time-consuming, but easy to ace. He is good about outlining exactly what will be on each exam (there are 3 total plus the final).
favorite lab professor so far; always helpful when you ask questions and makes sure everyone understands the information being taught in the lab. he also cracks your typical dad jokes, making lab slightly more bearable. there were safety quizzes that were an easy 100 if you read the book, making up only about 20% of your grade but every bit counts.
Nice guy who makes mostly corny jokes, but has good analogies for lecture! Lectures are the most useful, he reviews the last class every time, making it easy to know what was important from the previous lecture.
I suck at chem. Like if u feel you have no hope in chem, that's me too! But Townsend makes it easy! He explains things like you're learning it for the first time, but not in like a baby way! Honestly I'm so worried I won't get him for Chem 104!! His lectures are amazing! OWL assignments are long but EVERY chem 103 prof. has to have them!!
Dr. Townsend is a really great teacher. He uses a slide pack so that you do not have to take frivolous notes and can listen to the lecture. Obviously the subject matter is not easy, but he always is taking questions for clarification and is very kind. The tests are few and far between, so they have a lot of material. If you study, you will do well.
Dr. Townsend is the best Chem professor in the entire department. His lectures are easy to follow and he answers all questions. The multiple choice on the tests are hard, but the open ended are fairly easy. He is also very helpful.
Probably my favorite professor because he made an extremely hard class easy. There are people who do poorly on the exams but I honestly think they must not study correctly. I would take every "Example" and "Try-These" problem and redo them before the exam and that fully prepared me for the open ended problems, which make up most of the exam.
He takes pride on explaining each topic the best possible way. The homework he gives not only helps to prepare for exams but worth 15% of the grade. Which can be very helpful. Gen chem I/ Exam I. advice: Start memorizing solubility rules, common ionic charges, common acids' names and naming compounds on day 1. No curving. No extra credits.
Dr. Townsend is excellent at explaining the material in a clear, concise way. He is always willing to answer any question, no matter how small, and he does his best to clear up any misunderstandings. Tests are extremely straightforward; Dr. Townsend genuinely wishes all his students to succeed and will do everything in his power to help. Fantastic!
Class is hard but the teacher is very helpful. The material is hard and going to class is very helpful.
Dr. Townsend is a great professor if you are taking your first chemistry class since high school, as I was. He gets you up to speed. Show up to class, don't slack on your homework, and you will be fine.
He is such a nice guy and is always happy. He is very helpful when you go to his office hours which really helped me. We do a lot of practice problems which is really helpful as well. The tests are hard because the material is hard but he makes them as easy as a chem test can be I think. Definitely would recommend this professor!
Absolutely, hands down, the best professor I had this semester. He genuinely cares about chemistry, the class, and the students. Amazing guy. Pay attention, go to every single class (!!), take notes, and do OWL work - you'll pass. See him for office hours if things are confusing.
Other profs can make it crazy hard, but Townsend is clear and easy to understand. He goes a little fast through examples, but definitely wants to make sure everyone understands and follows. He is very compassionate and is always willing to help you out. Very fair tests as well, but 3 tests and hw are your only grades, so make sure you study.
SO caring & passionate about chem. Lectures are clear & easy to follow. Workbook is VERY helpful & organized (examples close to test). Gives partial credit, but I can't stress enough that he REALLY expects you to know the material like the back of your hand & won't hesitate to deduct points for every little detail so PRACTICE "welcome to friii-day"
Tests were fairly easy but he grades super hard, if you dont do it exactly his way then boom youre done. Do the homework and go to office hours, hes always willing to help. Fairly entertaining lecturer especially on Fridays!
Does not explain anything in class. Need to learn basically everything on your own. Would recommend any other teacher besides this one. Just terrible
He is such an amazing guy. Really, really cares about this class and the subject. Lectures can admittedly get confusing quickly, but as long as you keep up with the notes and DO THE HOMEWORK - you will be okay. You have to work hard to fully understand. Pay attention to sig figs on exams. Do the extra DAILY studying, and it will pay off. Good luck!
I felt that Dr. Townsend lined out his expectations for what we needed to know, and provided the appropriate material to help me understand. The lecture exams were extremely fair, and as someone who doesn't get 100s in chemistry, I feel as if I could have done it. People say he is the best chem professor, and I would wholeheartedly agree with that
Chem II was a hard course, but his lectures, examples, and personality made it manageable. This is not a course you can slack off in, though. Take notes of little things he says, write out examples, and take your precious time on the homework. Give this class your all and you will see that it truly isn't that bad of a course! Really gonna miss him.
Dr. Townsend is absolutely amazing! He is so easy to get along with and such a nice person. His class is very organized, and you know what is expected of you. He is an excellent teacher, having you learn independently through the TB, and also teaching you with printed out slides. His office hours are good, and he is always willing to help.
I love him; he is an excellent teacher and very kind. However, in the adaptation to COVID-19, he flopped. He abolished partial credit and didn't curve anything (why not find average PC given and add it to everyone's scores?). On the 2nd and 3rd exams each question was 5% with no PC. Even the Q's on it were unlike lecture. Yet final was similar.
Dr. Townsend is so organized with his work & always well prepared for his lectures. I never used the textbook but you need to purchase the cengage OWL access for homework. You will have one homework weekly, study the chapter slides and try to get a 100% on OWL (unlimited attempts). Tests are usually easier than the homework. Best CHE Teacher.
As someone who has had many chem profs, Dr. T is the greatest chem prof at West Chester right beside Dr. Butler. Having him for CHE 103 was a blessing. He wrote the book (literally) and he really knows how to teach it. Chem is hard no matter what, Dr. T makes it POSSIBLE to do well if you TRY. He seriously cares. Great in office hours. Take him!!!!
Mr. Townsend was one of the best teachers to have for Chem. That is not to say that he is easy, but if you go to his office hours he really makes sure that you understand the concepts being taught. Make sure that you do the homework's based off of your own abilities, cheating to get a good grade on the homework's will get you no where on the tests.
He's a great chem professor. I had a hard time last semester in chem 1, but he made it a lot easier and I actually learned in his class. He has slides and works through examples. There's no exam review but he has a whole class dedicated to homework. Chem 2 is hard in general, so get ready to work but he makes it manageable. Would take again
Had Dr. Townsend for CHE103 and he was amazing for that class, I ended up with an A+. This time around, Dr. Townsend was much more strict on grading and the tests were much harder. You will most definitely want to score 100% on all of the Cengage homework (only worth 20% of total grade), all 4 exams are worth 80% of your total grade in this class.
I don't even go here, I go to Bucknell University. But I had the privilege of having Dr. Townsend for a summer biochem course and felt obligated to write this. He is a kind, funny, and caring professor and honestly loads better than a lot of the private university professors I have had. I'm sad that he is retiring but he was a joy to learn from!
