Explosive lectures. Would recommend!
Oh man, there's tons that can be said about one of the most unique profs at Uwindsor. He's absolutely hilarious, and clearly really passionate about chemistry. His lectures were always pretty enjoyable, although at times he can sometimes be unorganized. He's approachable for help and is able to explain problems and concepts well. Great guy overall
Beware of this prof. He made it very clear he is only at the university for his research, and doesn't care about teaching. Brutal midterms. Learn by yourself using the internet or textbook because you won't be from his lectures. Lectures are all over the place, rarely teaches, just shows messy examples. He is a funny guy in lecture, though.
His lectures are funny and he is really genuine. Sometimes his explanations can be a bit cloudy but if you take the time to listen, you will be able to catch on. Just like with every class, don't expect to do well just from his lectures. It's a hard class, make sure you read the textbook or look at other resources - put time into the class.
Decent prof. His explanations of the material are clear but his assessments are unreasonably difficult to do well on.
funny lectures, not that youll learn anything. guy can't teach or make decent assignments or exams for anything.
tough. he's a funny, likeable professor. However going to class is an utter waste of time as zero learning is actually done in there. Skip class, learn on your own and show up for exams.
Its clear that he is an intelligent person that really knows his stuff. However, his ability to lecture is subpar and he is extremely disorganized, greatly contributing to our confusion during lectures. Fortunately, Ive gotten close to acing both of the term tests but this was no thanks to him. I was forced to use external materials to prepare.
funny, nice guy and was helpful during his office hours mostly, class wasnt too enjoyable though lots of ranting (but attendance is mandatory because he gave us hints and explained a lab once), definitely use the textbook its great!! problems he assigns are a must and worth doing! does cool research and we have a good lab team
What confused me during the entire semester was that the lecture hall in which the class was taught was newly renovated, with all the technology to display a paper on the projector screen. Regardless, he proceeds to use that RED MARKER on the tiny whiteboard as he scribbles. Horrendous experience this semester. Ruined my GPA.
Don't even show up to class. The stuff you'll see on the exam is stuff never covered in class and you have never seen before so you're better off just relaxing and getting a good night's sleep the day before the exam because you'll just end up with the same terrible mark anyways. Guy doesn't know what he's doing.
This guy is the perfect example of being too smart for his own good as a prof. He should stick to research cause he clearly can't teach or explain.
Alright ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IS HARD! If you think you are going to do well by just memorizing like every other class YOU WONT DO WELL. Those that actually tried to problem solve can do decent. Dr. Trant is very kind and extremely personable. It is hard no matter what prof you have. He is a bit disorganized but it was his first time teaching orgo 1!
Organic chemistry is hard in general!! You are going to have to study to understand not study to recognize. Chemistry is about problem solving, not memorizing. His lecture are disorganized, but if you are able to follow him things make sense. Exams and midterms are hard but fair if you studied well. He is always willing to help during office hours!
Organic Chemistry in general is a difficult course. It is not possible to do well in this class if you do not attempt to change your approach towards learning and practicing on a regular basis. But this does not justify Dr. Trants disorganized teaching style. I ignored everything that was taught in class and managed to do very well on the midterms
There's amazing profs, great profs, good profs, decent profs, bad profs, terrible profs, and then there's John Trant.
Trant might be disorganized. Fine. He taught what he had to, and the tutorials definetly helped with understanding, as well as his assignments. Took a bit of work and lots of practice but overall not bad. To those of you complaining, good luck on the MCAT, because you dont get a formula sheet for that either!
Organic chem is a difficult course, and what makes it more difficult is that Dr. Trant makes everything implied, so you have to figure out things yourself. The lectures are a bit disorganized and the exams were hard. However, to be fair, I've never felt more confident dealing with organic chemistry. At the end of the course, I did learn a lot.
This class isnt easy but most people complaining just didnt put in the work. Most of the time his office hours are empty because no one comes with any concerns because they dont bother to do the homework. He is an extremely nice person and great guy. If you work hard you get rewarded.
John is incredibly knowledgeable and caring. The class is hard, but he provided examples, assignments, and extra help/tutorials. His GAs are also great. He spent 30-40 minutes after every single class answering questions. If you did bad, it's on you. His tests make you think, and if you can't do that you probably shouldn't be taking the course.
The man simply doesnt know how to teach . He would tell us whats not on the exam and proceed to put it on the exam. Likeable guy , but really needs to take a step back from teaching this class .
It's easy to make mistakes in a difficult course Organic Chemistry due the specific details and many mechanisms. I think Trant did a good job with teaching it, and I'm sure it'll be more organized next time he teaches. If you are confused, he provides help after class. He's a cool dude. The textbook helps for review, but focus on his assignments.
HIs slides were not helpful at all. During lectures he just wrote things on the board, didn't start putting subtitles until halfway through the semester. The entire lecture he would just write rxn mechanisms. During the SOS, the tutors said he must not like us because of some of the things he required us to know for the final.
WORST PROF EVER TO EXIST! if you have to take a fifth year to avoid this class.... DO IT! He is literally the worst. youll thank me later.
his lectures are actually interesting and funny. never a dull moment. learned a lot. his assignments are always harder than the actual midterms and final, as they should be. 10/10
Really bad prof. Horribly disorganized and not a good teacher at all. Did well in the class but that's all from my own studying. Pray to the chemistry gods you get Jim Green instead.
Youd think this guy would learn his lesson, but he continues to be totally oblivious on how to be a proper educator. Without exaggeration, the worst professor Ive had at this institution, and it doesnt come close. Treats our educational experience like an absolute joke, and writes incredibly difficult exams. Youre a researcher, not a teacher.
he is a nice guy but his lectures and homework he assigns is so easy compared to his final exams which are hell
Dr. Trant seems like a genuinely good guy but his exams are absolutely impossible. I think I may have got a 20% on the final... he is brutal. Not a bad person just a bad prof or maybe it's just a bad subject.
I know organic chemistry is never a breeze, and you can do well by keeping up and regularly practicing or use other resources if you get a bad prof. But Dr. Trant does NOTHING to make our lives easier. Disorganized lectures, mixes up dates and times in emails vs syllabus, tech issues, impossible exam. Only cares about grant money and research.
If you take a class with him make sure to book with a psychiatrist too. The Worst prof ever, he's rude and will make your life hell. All his assessments and labs were crazy hard, my tutor who had a master's in chem couldn't even do them. Most people just need orgo 1 and it's offered 2nd semester so if he's teaching wait to take it w someone else.
Not only is he an awful professor, he also does not care about his students one bit. Had us do a project and only 20 people would get bonus marks on the project. If I knew how he'd grade the project, I would have put 0 effort into it. He mostly gave his lab rats the bonus marks even when they just made a silly 0 effort tiktok video. So unfair!
Try to avoid taking this professor at all costs. I do not understand how he still has a job teaching at UWindsor - he is the worst prof I have ever had. He says he wants to give everyone A+, but his assignments and final are RIDICULOUS and make that impossible. Favours his lab assistants which is extremely unfair to the rest of his students.
I would advise students not to CHEM-2300 with him. Hes a very disorganized professor. He would just draw mechanisms but provide little guidance. Also he teaches material beyond the scope of the course. For example radicals were completely extra. His final was difficult! Organic chem is already a hard course adding this Prof would be deleterious.
There is not enough time in a day to complain about this prof. Awful lecturer, didn't explain anything well at all. Skipped going over the basics of the course in favour of teaching way above the required level of knowledge for the class, and was completely biased and unfair. Overall, awful prof. Take your chances and wait for Green to take orgo
Someone mentioned getting a therapist if you had trant and that's exactly what i did. Halfway through the course I had to start seeing my therapist again because the class completely wrecked my mental health. He's disorganized, doesn't understand the mechanisms he teaches half the time, and will make you feel like trash. Avoid him.
My experience with Trant (it was 2 years ago) has brought me to write this first review on RateMyProfs. Let me make this clear. Trant is not the professor you want to take Organic Chemistry with at all. He is a HORRIBLE lecturer. Nothing he teaches will ever come across as intended. Not an enjoyable or easy class with him. Please avoid if you can.
He is utterly rude. Doesnt help in any way. Very bad lectures, doesnt explain anything and VERY TOUGH TESTS. never ever take him. HE IS THE WORST.
Had him online. He only offered 1 final for the course with mobius assignments attached to your grades to which can be cleared if your final exam mark was higher. The problem lies with the labs. GA were hard markers. If anything, Trant will help you understanding the topic, but only if you maximize your entire schedule for this class. Good luck.
yeah um, stay away. could do a whole essay on this. definitely the most horrible prof ive had. hes not great at teaching at all, so be ready to teach yourself the course. if you have to wait to take the course with another prof, do it. please. the number of mental breakdowns ive had is not worth it. i will 110 percent need a therapist now.
Dear Students, I kindly advise you all to not take Trant. Trant cannot teach at all even if his life bet on it, the material that I learned was thought from myself, I have had to devote hours and hours just to do good in his course, the material isn't even super hard he is just so unorganized and can't teach at all. DONT TAKE HIM PLEASE.
If I could undo one thing is to not take it with Trant. I dont know why they let him teach this course. I wanted to rate 0 but too bad I had to put 1.
He doesnt now what hes talking about and every morning that I woke up and had to go to one of his lectures depression would hit me. I spent a lot of time trying to learn based on his youtube videos but hes very poor at explaining concepts and doesnt want to see his students succeed. Avoid his class at all cost or youll be battling depression.
WORST PROF OF ALL TIME! Most demeaning and cocky individual I have ever seen. Lectures are brutal too. I feel bad for anyone who has to take this guy. JOKE.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Warning you now. AGAIN, DON'T TAKE HIM!
I need a grippy socks vacation after his course
Literally the worst prof. Don't take classes with him. Honestly made our final so much harder than it needed to be and he KNEW most people wouldn't finish it even with 4 hours given. He is a terrible teacher and hard to understand. Orgo is tough on its own but with John Trant it's impossible.
The exam was designed not to finish check this mans twitter there is more information given in that then the bb
Unrealistic final. Not fair in the slightest.
Definitely the worst prof at this school. He has no sympathy for his students and wants to fail you. Hes funny sometimes but that doesn't make up for the new trauma I have. This class is hard to do well in but with him, there's not even a chance. I do not recommend taking his class at all. I used to enjoy chemistry,,, not anymore!
literally the worst. the review that says he gives more information about things to his twitter than to us is right. put more questions than he said he would and made the exam so hard, considering how awful he is at teaching. instead of curving he just LOWERS our grades. made me want to end it all literally every day
He actually designed our exam so that we wouldnt be able to finish it. He set us up to fail. A teacher is supposed to help you learn and assess your learning fairly, not purposely try to make everyone fail for fun. He should work on making less unfunny jokes and actually teaching the concepts.
This is messed up buddy needs to get checked out if ur mental don't reflect that back on your students by giving them a midterm they are unable to finish especially if u cant teach
Trant's lectures are old and from last year, so you have to watch them before coming to class. Class is mainly for questions. The final exam was very hard and non-fair. Most of the students were not able to finish. be ready to know every reaction mechanism because you well need t even if he says not so memorize it.(WORST PROF TO THIS DAY)
Worst prof I have ever had. Marks way too hard, doesn't give enough information about exams, and is generally rude to his students. Would never ever recommend settling for this man.
Hes a funny dude, and smart. Ill give him that. But the guy has a huge ego and is rather disorganized when it comes to teaching skills. Not an easy prof or class which is a bad combo.
THE WORST prof I have ever had in my life, His lectures are pre recorded from the year before with his office hours being where he teaches live. exams are unnecessarily difficult and long. just an all around bad prof.
doesn't care, unorganized cant count loves giving out fake information said there was 18 question on the exam turns out there is 3 extra and said it was a "cumulative exam" basically the whole thing was mechanisms
I devoted 50% of my time to this class, used more extra resources than any other classes combined. Nevertheless this ended up with my doctor diagnosing me with a severe anal tear.
The fact that this is my first time on this site, going out of my way to give you the fair review you deserve just shows how you need to change your entire teaching method. Very unorganized, foul language during lectures which is extremely inappropriate for a professor at a university, lying to your students, its almost as if you want them to fail.
I've never left a review under a professor, but I felt like I had to for this one. Worst professor ever and doesn't teach and is so unorganized, Midterm was ok but the final was HELL. Exam was so hard and so long, I don't even think someone with a PhD in chemistry could do it. I doubt he can do it without the answer key. Your GPA will drop
Most unorganized and uncaring professor I have ever had the misfortune of being taught by.
Worst academic experience I have ever had in my life. His teaching methods show he does not care about teaching as he recycled lectures. This class is mandatory for premed students so we have no choice and his exams are set up for students to fail which is unfair. I hope he is replaced for next year as I wouldnt want my worst enemy to have him.
Broski cant do math says the final exam will have 18 questions which alone is extremely a lot and not enough time to complete but then goes Nah, I want you guys to fail then proceeds to make it 21 questions
Don't take this class with him, find another prof or transfer universities. The content was somewhat interesting but he can't teach and doesn't understand anything himself. He overcomplicates things and doesn't teach mechanisms at all. His Exam is SO HARD. Don't take this class with him if you don't need it. Learned nothing from him.
Horrible! Chose to do a flipped course this year for our benefit, but really just meant less work for him. Had to watch last years recorded lectures, then come to his. His lectures were ONLY to go over a few questions, which he would mess up. Exam was hardest of my LIFE. Was designed so no one could finish. I have never had a worse prof EVER.
it actually hurt to be in that exam, he literally made it so we couldn't finish on time. How, why? I dunno try looking at his Twitter for information because you sure aren't getting anything off of blackboard ill tell you that
Made an account just to post this. Trant is super disorganized. Lectures are awful and he covers topics out of order which confuses you and prevents you from finding a better source to learn from. Got A+ on the midterm and still got annihilated on the final. His communication is terrible and he updates twitter more often than his class.
Said finals were 18 questions turns out it is 21 questions! :( almost every question require you to draw the reaction mechanism. two questions each have a reaction of 5 different solutions. some question requires you to draw out chair confirmation that wasn't taught before. Had like 5 different questions on radical that was barely touched on in lec
One thing to say is (if I can give a negative rating I will happily do it!)
Never rated a professor but Trant traumatized so much that I think he deserves a review. This is the worst classes Ive ever taken. Not only is he unorganized but he literally does not even care about his students (blames us for everything). He designed the exam so we wouldn't be able to finish it. Who even does that? I need therapy after this class
Avoid at all costs made us do 2x the lecture videos. I watched every single one, did all practice questions, felt confident and still did not do well. He seems to like making students do badly to prove himself as a professor. Even tried to set us up by posting a fake answer on chegg to catch students cheating. Just a terrible experience.
Lectures are basically useless, he's really disorganized. Would teach something, then proceed to say that it was wrong. Tested on things that weren't taught or done in examples. He made it very clear that he doesn't want his students to succeed, and that he just doesn't care at all. Probably only cares about his research.
He thinks that he is funny but he only swears during class.
terrible overall try and never take him
Had us watch last years lectures before coming to a live class, where he took up questions. Some days he would cover 3h worth of last years lecture in one live class, then move on. I Was constantly behind. Midterm was fair, final was ridiculously hard. Hes really funny so I didnt fall asleep during lectures but that is the only positive. Avoid.
The worst academic experience I've ever had. Dr. Trant simply doesn't care about his students. Very unorganized. Inappropriate language. The class was flipped, so we had 6 lectures every week. The exam was unreasonably difficult, focused heavily on one chapter, which disagrees with what he said that the exam was cumulative. AVOID HIM. TERRIBLE.
Funny guy, but that's where the "good" ends. The course was terribly disorganized: lots of mistakes on assignment/MT/final (presumably thrown together last-minute), 36-DAY DELAY for MT grade, final disproportionately difficult with different # of questions than we were told. Has no genuine desire to help his students succeed. Avoid if possible.
This is probably the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life, he has to be the worst at teaching anything and honestly you are better off learning from youtube and the text book than every attending his lectures
Trant can be quite a funny and interesting guy but there is no doubt that he severely lacks teaching skills. His lectures were unorganized which made studying for the final ridiculously hard. Constantly throughout lectures, he would work through mechanisms and say how he never really understood how they worked AS A PROFESSOR. Don't take him.
I feel like he gets an unfair reputation. He genuinely wants to help you learn (although his lectures are sometimes confusing). His lectures are a must as he covers topics with a high degree of detail. Definitely a hard class (compared to Green), but doable as his office hours and practice assignments are really useful. Can succeed if you work
EVEN HE KNOWS HE IS BAD AT TEACHING. IT IS LIKE SOMEONE IS FORCING HIM TO TEACH. HE MADE THE FINAL EXAM SO NO ONE PASSES. STUDYING FOR THE EXAM IS A DUMB IDEA.
worst academic experience ever. Trant uses profanity in lectures, almost 3x more lectures than a normal course, covers material vaguely, assignments are said to be completed in 30mins yet take hours to do, final was the worst exam ive ever had to take. orgo is taken by a lot of hardworking premeds that put in excessive effort, waste of energy :(
John Trant cannot teach. Ngl he can be funny but he legit doesn't know what he's doing and has little to no remorse for his students. I taught myself every mechanism because his lectures are so disorganized. Studying for the exam sucked and writing it was even worse. Wait for Dr green you wont regret it.
Worst prof I've ever had.
Every year he says in his final exam announcement "Make me give you all A+" while knowing that his exams are super hard as he is useless and you have to teach yourself the material. It's like he wants to piss you off by giving you hope that he's nice then crushes you with the final. Have never had a prof this bad at teaching. Avoid at all cost.
John Trant is notorious for being the worst prof at the University of Windsor. At this point, it's not even his fault. I don't know why the administration chooses to keep him in this position when so many people suffer having him as a prof. It makes no sense? Oh right, its because he gets grant money for his research. PATHETIC! Never take his class
Worst prof at the entire university. Needs to be replaced. i had a tutor who made everything so easy to understand, yet his exam was still impossible. He always has a ton of mistakes in his lectures and doesnt explain anything clearly or completely. I actually liked orgo but Trant made it impossible. he only cares about his lab rats and his Twitter
Extremely unprofessional and makes organic chemistry feel impossible to understand. Many students fail this course and it's not because of the material and more so because Trant doesn't know how to teach.
He treats the course like its at graduate level. After the final, he compared failing students to the few people who got 90s. He gave most of his research team the extra credit over the rest of the class. We need to bring his twitter-ranting pick-me ego down. Im convinced he likes to email his past students randomly just to traumatize them.
Never had such an incompetent prof until now. Trant praises orgo so much on twitter except he has 0 idea on how to explain concepts properly. I loved orgo chem when I learned it by myself but Trant just sucked out any admiration I ever had for it. He finds joy in torturing students and at the end of the day, he's probably laughing at us on twitter.
Literally does not even understand what he is talking about. Extremely condescending and treats his students like they're idiots. He posts more about the exams on Twitter than he does on Blackboard ffs. I usually average high 80's-low 90's but orgo dropped my GPA down to hell. Thanks Trant.
HAD to have attended the live lectures if you wanted to do well. Midterm - very fair. The final took a turn. The final was brutal with many qs where answer was not black&white. The issue w the course is the amount of work needed to be done: 2x lecture, textbook, YT, assignments. Trant is super helpful at office hours, must improve mech teaching tho
He makes fun of his students on Twitter!!! He lies about how many questions are on exams and is an impossible grader. Plus he expects you to do double the amount of lecture hours a week that a regular class expects from students. If you ask him for help, he bullies you for it.
Dr. Trant literally made me leave school and come back the next year. Almost double the amount of lectures assigned through his youtube channel, cussing during classes when respectfully asked by religious students not to, barely teaches mainly just does examples hoping you will get it, assignments have material that he didn't even teach.
The absolute WORST!
now let me say I'm the biggest hater I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress I hate the way that you sneak diss
Mr. Trant needs to book a flight to Turkey to fix his hairline.
The worst prof. in the Chem department at UWindsor. He does not have an understanding of the material and cannot teach it adequately. Constantly uses profanity in lectures, which speaks to his poor vocabulary and poor grasp of content. He also very politically inflammatory in the classroom and online. He belittles students and offers no help.
Challenging course, but using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the dense content. Lectures can be hit-or-miss, so focusing on self-study was key to doing well.
