The honors psych class he teaches is very easy for an honors class! He's a really really nice professor and makes class interesting. He's pretty young, so he relates to the students well. I recommend him for psychology!

Great teacher, and very easy to understand. Notes are uploaded online, so you can just print them and fill in the blanks in class. It helps so you can just listen instead of write notes, and not understand what he just said. Read the book, it helps. He also gives extra credit. Great class.

Intro to psych. -- loved his class, hard to memorize everything but lets you know what will be on the exams by study guides and his powerpoints are online for you to fill in the blanks. fun teacher and easy to listen to.

Great professor! He makes General Psychology fun to learn. Not a hard class. If you attend class you get points. If you attend class you will easily get a C in the class. Put some studying into it and you'll get an A or B.

Funny professors always make it easy to learn. Good amount of extra credit and help offered. Attendance not mandatory but definitely recommend going. Book needed for quizzes, and help for studying for exams.

He's very knowledgeable about psych. His tests are VERY hard though. The questions are very wordy just like the online homeworks you'll take. He gives you a study guide but it doesn't prepare you for the test. The final is optional but if you take it, he drops your lowest test grade.

He is a great teacher! It is indeed a hard course, but he gives you all the knowledge that is needed. He does not just stand in the front and preset information. He is very easy going and he even wrote a song to help us study(played the guitar while singing the song). I would definitely recommend him!

He is a great man, the course itself is difficult but he gave study guides for every exam. You do not need to use your textbook unless you use it to study. He doesn't take attendance, but showing up defiantly helps. Difficult course but great teacher

He's an entertaining guy and he makes his lectures very interesting. I took Psych in high school so showing to lectures wasn't mandatory for me-- i already knew most of the material. There are online home works due for each test: DO THEM. THEY WILL SAVE YOU IN TEST PREP. Study for tests and write down his examples in class. I recommend him.

He's a really fun teacher that cracks jokes or makes songs to help you remember criteria. Overall it's an easy class, and if the powerpoint is online you don't really need to go to class because he doesn't say anything that isn't on them. Sometimes he does ask extra credit about stuff that happened in class though.

I took this class as a post secondary student and I really enjoyed it! His lectures were very interesting and insightful. I would definitely recommend him to any student with an interest is Psychology! He even brought in his son to class and he shared a few jokes with us! It was an extremely comfortable environment.

Took Psych by him. He was really interesting to listen to. Make sure to go to class, he uses a lot of info from the lectures on his tests. The tests were on the harder side, but there is extra credit opportunities. Also, the final was optional, so that was nice.

Updegraff has been my favorite professor here so far. He's friendly and makes learning about even the most boring psych topics fun. He even brought in a guitar and sang us a song about the brain once. He uses a lot of lecture info on the tests, but as long as you go to class and put in the time this course is a fun, easy A.

Dr. Updegraff is great. I had him for GenPsych; my first psych class ever. He does a really great job at pulling real-life examples and applying them to the concepts that he's teaching. He's also pretty funny. Attendance isn't mandatory, but HIGHLY recommended. Just buy the online access code, the book isn't necessary if you go to the lecture.

Dr. Updergraff was probably one of the best professors I've ever had. He made lectures so interesting, and was fun with it. He makes sure everyone understands and post his power points on blackboard. I feel like in order to pass the class you should really show up, it will be so much easier for you to learn. You don't really have to read the book but sometimes look back in it for hw questions and in my opinion it's a good read. Exams aren't bad if you study for them and make sure you understand the material. Would totally take a class of his again.

John Updegraff made me love psychology!! He makes lectures fun and entertaining. Exams aren't bad. His final exam is optional which is nice. He offers plenty of extra credit. Definitely recommend him!

Psychology was not the hardest class, but beware that the test is not only the lectures but the book too. Homework is accessed by the access code so book is required.

john is by far my favorite professor this semester. his class has made me reconsider my biology major and switch to psychology. if you fail this class you basically had to work your ass off because he makes getting an A as easy as he can.

Lots of long lectures that eventually get really boring and he words his tests kinda weird but overall not too bad of a class. he rarely ever gives homework and is hilarious. you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches and cares about his student

I loved his class. His lectures were engaging and he makes a lot of jokes. His exams are pretty straight forward as long as you know the material. I never used the book and I still got good grades. Do the homework, it's easy and it gives you the answers. Also, he offers extra credit for the case studies

John is a great teacher who really tries to engage his students. However, the class is a lecture hall of about 500 students, which is the worst possible way to learn and teach. The homework is online and very easy to get a 100% on. He drops the lowest exam and makes the final optional. He really tries to help you out and is also so knowledgeable.

He was one of the greatest professors I have ever had. I enjoyed his class and would honestly take it again if I could. He is very passionate about what he does and relays information to a students understanding. You have to go to class and study but exams are reasonable and he is a fair grader. HIGHLY recommend getting him as your professor!!

I absolutely LOVE John he was such an amazing professor. His final was optional. His study sessions were extremely helpful. The first exam was kinda difficult but after that, his exams just require you to memorize material it was a very easy class.

His power points are blackboard so that helps a lot and he tries to make lectures interesting and relatable, he even played a song for us on his guitar

I really enjoyed general psych with this professor. He post lecture slides online but I would still attend if I were you because not everything will be on the slide, just enough so you won't be lost. His test were multiple choice and we had online homework that was easy to get an A On because you had 3 tries.

His lectures are so funny! I wish I would have gone to his class more often...

This class was pretty manageable. You can get a lot of bonus points, which are needed, especially because 75% of your grade is tests. Lectures are pretty fun but can be boring if you are not interested in the material.

Dr. Updegraff was very knowledgable and engaging. He posts all his powerpoints online, so attendance isn't mandatory but I'd still recommend coming to class: on low attendance days he tells the class a joke that's extra credit on the next exam. Super clear about his expectations, and it's easy to get extra credit.

Updegraff was great, so glad I took general Psych with him. Exams are hit or miss (some questions really hard, most straight from HW). HW is so easy, no reason not to get 100%. Optional final that cancels lowest exam score, final was easiest exam all year. Nothing to lose by taking it. Attendance not mandatory but some q's on exam only from lecture

I literally never attended a single class except for test days and still got an A. All test questions come from homework or reading the book with the occasional lecture question that you can figure out without going to class. Will sometimes add bonus questions on tests about jokes told in class. Solid guy, easy class.

When I went to class he always made the class fun, even made a song for us for us to remember the unit. It helped. This class is super fun jokes he says in class are on the exams. You also need the textbook in order to complete homework. highly suggest this class especially with this professor because you actually look forward to going to class.

I did not struggle with the course but I know some did. 70% of the grade comes from 4 exams. There is an optional final that is cumulative but replaces your lowest exam score if you do better. 15% comes from HW. Easy 100% for HW and the HW Q's are also on exam sometimes. Last 15% comes from activities. Also very easy 100%. Cool guy and fun class!

He is a funny professor that will make class fun to come too. Most of the time you get out early and the only work outside of class is online quizzes.

Great prof! I had him for general psych my first semester in a class of probably 200 students. He made me feel like an actual person and not just a number in a class size that big. He was very relate able he told dad jokes!!! and some of those dad jokes ended up as a bonus question on the tests. Not an easy A class but hard to fail for sure.

Definitely go to lectures. The professor always tries to make the information memorable and he's funny as hell. Dad jokes galore!! Make sure to pay attention and take notes.

The class is not difficult to pass if you pay attention in lectures, do the homework, and do the optional study guides. Exams are curved accordingly which definitely helps your grade. His lectures are interesting and he makes the class fun. He gives you all you need to succeed in his course.

I did struggle, but overall I actually enjoyed going to the lectures because he always played his guitar or played a fun song at the beginning of class. Updegraff was my favorite professor this semester, he is seriously funny and and cares about your grades. You have to pay attention in lectures and take good notes, but he makes class so fun and is really interesting. He curves a lot of tests and makes sure there are ways for you do succeed. Great professor, really understanding and helps to explain a lot of different topics you need to know. He will occasionally sing songs that actually help you learn which is great. Gives out study guides and goes over all the topics for the exams.

Dad joke central. His lectures are very engaging and once in awhile, he'll whip out a guitar and sing you a song about psychology. Gives you enough time to work on homework and responds to emails in a fast fashion. A solid 9.5/10 would recommend.

I really enjoyed having Professor Updegraff! This class is 100% centered around the amount of effort you're willing to put it. Exams are weighted at 72% for your overall grade so you have to make sure you study, but the material isn't that difficult as long as you pay attention to his lectures and do the reading. He made this class a lot of fun!

Dr. Updegraff was a really good prof! I had him in Fall 22 for gen psych, and the lectures were always interesting! He has good office hours, and makes it easy to understand the content he presents, and you can always ask for clarification. I really appreciated this course! Make sure to study though.

I loved professor Updegraff, he's a really nice guy and likes to make dad jokes and sometimes brings in his guitar. His lectures aren't too long or boring either. The only thing is that you have to do well on the exams to pass the class and they are pretty content heavy but not too hard. I recommend taking him.

Very engaging lectures, makes active effort to make lessons interesting, encourages both individual and group participation from students. Tests are challenging but not unreasonable, all material covered and reviewed during lectures.

If you need to take a General Psych class, John is the professor for it. Little work outside of class, if you study his exams are pretty easy. We often spent class listening to music and judging 90's psych shows. One of the most laid-back professors I've had. I will say his class fills up fast so show up early to get a seat!

HES THE BEST! my favorite professor ive ever had. his lectures are so entertaining and informative. he makes lecture fun and he'll play music sometimes and crack some dad jokes. he really is one of a kind! exams are super easy and not bad at all. you take 4 exams and the final is optional.

Great lectures! Class is very test heavy since there are very few assignments. SONA Research credits will be required but are very easy to fulfill and offer extra credit if you do more than what is required. The exams are pretty easy if you do your studying, attendance is not necessary since the slides are posted on Canvas, but is recommended.

Lots of exams with many opportunities for extra credit. Engaging lecturer and clear communicator of what you will be graded on. I appreciate how polished his class structure is; three or so lectures, review day, exam, repeat.

Dr. Updegraff was my favorite professor during my first semester at Kent State. He is a very sweet, caring, and funny teacher who wants all of his students to succeed. Attendance isn't mandatory; you would probably be just fine studying the slides during your own time but I recommend you go to his lectures just because of how amazing he is.

Professor John's lectures are an experience. He is funny, relatable and breaks down content in a way that'll make you fall in love with Psychology. Not to mention his guitar that he uses to compose songs for you to remember content. What's not to love about his class? It's an easy pass too if you focus just a little bit

He teaches very well he provides slideshows and will go into more detail on each slide, he gives you a lot of resources to study outside of class. He also has a lot of jokes and will put jokes on the exam as a bonus question.
