This guy is an ego-maniac. There is some HW, 3 take home tests and a project. He lets you out early and is pretty laid back till he grades your papers. Class was easy till we got our papers back. out of 150 people 4 got above an 80%. That says it all
Dude he does indeed let you out early... but cant teach that great... essay writing tests (wth its an acct class for gods sake)... hes cool but how does he grade papers?? freak dude... it just proves that if a few ppl got above 80 that he cant tea
He is horrible!! Everybody thought that he was cool until we got our essays back. He'll tell u what he expects after the tests are graded.(There's really no point to that!!) He won't let you drop even if you have a D or F. He has no pity what so ever.
He is so lame. You think you understand the work untill you get your papers back. He is cold hearted and he expects this beginning Acct. class to be advanced. This is a BEGINNING couse. We are not accountants nor stock brokers!!!!!

Horrible teacher, fall most of the class
You don't even know what your grade is until the semester is almost over since that is when he decides to start throwing papers and "simple" four question exams on you! He does not lecture on the actual course, but on his past careers with glas
Made class interesting. Explained things fairly well.
Good class, but you have to do the homework. If you do the homework it is easy to understand and you'll get at least a B, If you don't you will fail.
The class in and of itself is not very easy because it is not interesting if it is not related to your major. if you read and do the homework before the class period it is due you will understand it and do better in class.
Make sure that you understand what he is asking you to do. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. If he gives the 4 question tests make sure you study exactly what he tells you to and DO THE HOMEWORK because the tests are just like it. He dose not give partial credit so...
This is a hard course. Acct is hard. Don't "read" the book, just concentrate on the problems and you will get an A or B.
dont read anything in the book except the practice problems you will get a B
SIMPLY HORRIBLE!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! HE WILL HAVE NO PITY FOR YOU WHAT SO EVER!!
he has some interesting stories, but he is a hard grader and doesn't give any leeway.
Very interesting stories, almost too many though, not really any point in going to class unless you want to go for story hour. Not too hard, just do the work and you will be fine!
He is a very good accounting teacher. Very well organized, and gives you all the information you need. Just follow directions and answer what he is asking you. nothing else matters
He has great stories, but they have no relevance to the test. He gives essay questions and that's hard. If he gives you numerical problems then if you study your okay.
Totally sucks!! No pity and will NOT listen to you. Essays for accounting is also ridiculous!!
I got an A. I use to hate acct. Do the H.W. carfully and you will be fine. He tells you what is going to be on the tests.Just follow his direction. He is a good teacher.
Even though he tells you what is going to be on the test, it still manages to be prett hard. But eventually, tests become pretty similar and easier. Test problems are taken from hw assignments. Hard class, no extra credit given. Take him if you have no other choice.
this guy doesn't teach well at all, and his grading method is terrible, there is no method, the only good thing about him is that the tests are based on the homework problems, so if you do that then you'll be o.k., not fine, but o.k.
He is very funny. he teachs you a lot, after his lecture, you don't even need to read the textbook. He explains material very well. The tests are similar to HW.I learned a lot from him.
He is a really good teacher. He tells you want you need to know. he gives you exmaples. The first midterm is the hardest. so once u pass the 1st midterm the rest is piece of cake. the only thing i didnt like it the project. He makes you print tons of pages. SAVE THE TREES!!!
His expectations were rediculous for this level of class. No other Acct 201 classes spend the ENTIRE semester doing case studies. Do not take this class with him
Explains everything very well, let's you know going into the tests what is expected of you. To be honest with you I wish he taught every class. So far in my accounting courses, I feel that I learned the most from him. Be forewarned though you will have to work to do well.
not the best, but not the worst.
ADVANTAGE: (1)He explains in detail. (2)He explains clearly. (3)If you want to learn accounting, he is the way to go. DISADVANTAGE: (1)All his exams are essay & fill in the blanks yourself. No multiple choice. So they are very tough exams. (2) He won't let you drop after 2nd exam.
He explains very clearly and teaches only materials that are important. If you study hard, his class is rewarding. If you goof off and be lazy, you'll be penalized hard as I found out. I got lazy at the end of the semester and my average grade dropped. He won't let you drop after first test, no exception. I ended up getting F for the course
Very hard teacher. All questions are essay form. Also he won't let you drop after the fourth week which is before the first test. Difficult teacher for sure! Likes to yell at the class if you don't do your homework.
This class is very!!! easy! You are almost guaranteed a B if you do the two case studies and the semester project. Neither of those are hard. There are no test, except for final. If you are an Accounting major plz avoid this guy. You will not learn much. Otherwise if your taking this class because its required, this is the guy you want.
His lectures are boring, but it's important that you go, you won't have to read the book if you do. He assigns 3 easy projects and there's one final exam. He only asks questions on things he's talked about in class. Accounting majors should not take this class, though, he doesn't teach you a lot.
I agree that you should avoid him if you're an accounting major because you don't learn much accounting. You do learn a lot about businesses, and he's had a lot of real world experience. He's a picky grader on the projects, if you miss one part, he marks you down the full points, which hurt the grade. Make sure you have access to a laser printer.
his test are the problems in the books, but it took me fover to do them WITH the book. If you can do his homework, then you can do his test. Test are long word problem not MC. Tests are low; he curves class average to 70 percent. Damn, this guy love case studies and those annual reports. expect to print like arouund 500 pages for each class.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very knowledgable and you learn so much! The course is hard and requires a lot of work. If you want to learn Acct he is a must take. If you want an easy ticket and don't care stay away from him.
His tests are way tough. You don't need a scantron because you'll need to fill in the blank yourself & there's essay type question at end of each test. He won't let you drop the course after first exam for whatever reason so I ended up getting F. I took it with another professor afterwards and got a easy B. If ur a slacker, take other professor
I worked extremely hard in this course and recieved a D. His personality is absolutely of the most unprofessional and I can't count the amount of times he yelled at the class. His exams are impossible and semester project will consume your life... beware!
Forget the scantron in his class. His exams are all fill-ins and essay types, way too tough! You have to understand the concept 100% and memorize everything to pass his exams cause no multiple choice. You have to fill in everything!! I ended up getting D. Re-took it with other instructor and passed easy.
I never had a teacher who gave blank fill in exams. On each exams, paragraph scenerio is given & u have to calculate figure out & fill out answers on blank lines. At the end of exam, there's 5 essay questions regarding few concepts. Insane exams! He emphasizes momorization more than other teachers. & he is merciless when grading exams.
I really enjoyed his class. He's tough but fair and if you do the work and don't slack off you'll be fine :)
Maybe he might have been easier for Acct 201 like the other dude said but for 300A stay from him. He explains pretty well but his exams are insanely tough. His gradings are even more insane. I studied pretty hard and I ended up getting a D. If I were you, i would stay from this dude.
Makes test much harder than it should be with fill in blanks. He cares more about memorization than concept. Actually it should be the other way around. But just memorizing everything won't do either because concept has to be applied on half the questions. Take it with either Pearlman(easy) or fisher(average). both are better than Valenzuela
I got a F. I cannot believe it. He has this strange personal policy where he won't let you drop after first exam eventhough spring semester only started one month ago. Also all his exams are essay type fill-ins.
Certainly not easy, and you gotta work to get your grade. Exams are blank sheet of paper and you need to fill in with format and answer. Gives partial credit. Put in the work, do the homework, study, and you'll get the grade you deserve. It's hard, but worth it. You actually learn in his class cause he forces you to think. But he is hard.
Awesome teacher! Doesn't try to trick you on the tests like other professors; tests you on exactly what is covered in class. Lectures are very interactive and useful. Probably the most I've learned in an accounting class thus far.
THIS CLASS WAS EASY! I ONLY ATTENDED FEW TIMES IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER, THEN SHOWED UP ONLY FOR TESTS AFTER READING EACH CHAPTER ONE TIME. I GOT EASY A. ACTUALLY I RECEIVED EASY A s ON ALL MY ACCOUNTING CLASSES. I GRADUATE THIS SEMESTER. ACCOUNTING MAJOR IS PIECE OF CAKE!
lots of info to learn from this class,if you dont go to class it will be hard to pass.his lectures are imprtnt since the book is hard to understand.good professor who knows his stuff, but intimidating to approach w/?'s.try rating a diff profsr mayb u cn take him, espcly snce this class is mndtry for most majors. gd luck!
If you want to learn the concepts, this is the professor to take! His exams are based solely on what he teaches. If you show up to class, do the homework, and ask questions, you are guaranteed to pass! Just study what he tells you to. Extremely helpful during office hours too! This is the guy to take the class with if you want to learn...
3 exams and 1 comprehensive final. He tells you whats on them. One big project grades very easily on it as long as you show you did the job. He test you on his lecture problems so you better attend and take good notes. You have to read the book in order to understand his material.Read the chapter before you go to class!Awsome teacher!!!you learn!!!
His lecture are helpful and clear. a little fast.
Not an easy class, but a great professor. He says what exactly will be on the exams. The semester project is graded very liberally as long as you follow his directions. Study his lectures with the textbook for added clarification and you'll do well. USE THE PROBLEM SOLVING SURVIVAL GUIDE! It's a big help.
This guy shows up in sweatpants to class for a reason. You are going to be there until the stated end time or later. Won't let you drop the class after the first test. Take Simon Pearlman he is nice and his tests are multiple choice and he tells you the topic of every question before hand. Also he does not assign a project like Valenzuela does.
Accnt 201: 3 tests and 1 final, 50 questions, difficult and you'll need the entire hr 15 to finish. Don't run yet, he's actually a good teacher- explains the material well and clear. He has a good sense of humor; my class is at 8 am and I'm awake for it.
taking his class at the moment and i'm 99% sure i'm going to fail. ive NEVER failed a class be4. his test are SO hard and he doesn't give you enough time to do them! by the end of the class period, everyone was still scrambling to bubble in their answers. his lectures are interesting sometimes but he teaches so fast and is somewhat intimidating.
His lectures do not pertain to the tests as much as one hopes. He'll talk a lot about stories about accounting and businesses, but all his test questions are extremly detailed math based accounting, and nothing to do with facts. Do not take at 8 in the morning- put you to sleep. I do not recommend him at all.
He is a very interesting professor. You have to constantly practice h/w problems in order to do well on his exams. He provides a lot of help during his tutoring and office hours. attendance is not mandatory, but is recommended if you want to know what is on his tests.
You may think you understand what is going on while your in class but then the test comes & u duno what to. his class is based on 3 tests (class av. of 58%) plus the final & a individual project. Your understanding of accounting is based totally on your teacher, i advise u to take a different one if u can
3 tests, 1 final, and 1 project that he grades liberally. His lectures are interesting but more business based, while his tests are EXTREMLY difficult and pertain strictly to accounting and detailed book keeping. Not enough time to finish tests. The class is a lot of work...if you're ot willing to put in the effort, don't take this instructor.
Soooooo unprofessional. As the young student I think I should be the one playing the child role, but he likes to be the child in this situation. He doesn't listen, and has no mercy on students. 3 exams, and 1 semester project which he harshly grades. Doesn't curve, no nothing. Don't take him.
I liked this professor. He's funny and clear. He is a harsh grader, so you have to try really hard. Take at your own risk!
I took this class in the summer, & even though I don't like Cost Accounting, he made the class enjoyable and I learned a lot from him. He applies the accounting concepts to everyday life, which makes learning a lot more fun. Pay attention, go to class, & take notes that he writes on the board. Study that, and you'll do fine in the class.
John is a harsh grader. He does not curve and his exams are pretty difficult, class average of 52%, which makes it even worse. His class lectures are pointless and most of the time, they have nothing to do with the book. If you want an A, don't take this prof, unless you can self teach yourself using the book, which isn't too hard to understand.
He's funny. I enjoyed the class. If u pay attention and go ask him for help he will tell u whatever u want to know. I got 60-80% on the test and they were curved to Bs and As. I failed the class project bc i did it the night b4 and still got a B in the class. i just read the acct workbook the night b4 the test, i didn't even need the actual book.
He is slightly intimidating at first, but is actually pretty funny. The practice problems he assigns are very similar to his tests, and you have to know the terms. The paper wasn't hard if you actually put some effort into it. It's not the easiest class, but it's not hard either. You will walk away actually knowing something about accounting.
A professor who is not clear on expectation. My class was his first class that had scantron tests. Test are somewhat tricky. Many people in the class did poorly on the test. He never really explain what going to be on the test or what to look for in the book. Only teaches about 25% from each chapter. The rest is up to you.
Professor Valenzuela is a not a good professor at all. He doesn't let you drop the class after 4 weeks due to the fact that he want's to stay teaching. His test are hard, people usually fail. He's very careless with student's work, slams test on the ground in stacks. He always seems angry. Ditch it, take someone else.
He's intimidating and is not helpful at all UNLESS you are an accounting student. The only other plus is that he has a tutoring session scheduled after class... But that doesn't really help either. So good luck.
Worst teacher ever!Exams are fill in J/Es no multiple choice no notes.Final is cumulative.Avoid!
He was cool as a teacher i thought. The class overall was hard though. You definately have to read the book, do the hwk, come to class everyday and study. He is willing to help you in tutoring sessions but u have to have questions when you get there. The biggest thing is just studying and coming to class.
Great class if you are interested in the material. pretty hard tests but if you study the chapters it is not that bad. tests are curved. the semester project is made out to be SO hard but all you have to do is analyze according to the last chapter of the book to get an A. Very interesting professor with some cool stories.
VERY HARD.Do the homeworks + some over and over to do well on tests. Spend time on the project or you will not get the grade. Listen carefully to what he says and do what you are told. He always seems angry and yells a lot. Avoid asking questions, he will turn it into a different question and make you feel stupid. Won't drop after 4 wks. Arrogant!
Got my first ever C at CSULB. 300B is a hard class, and he makes it harder. No multiple choice on the exam, all problems. If you miss the first step, you miss the entire problem. Pretty cool professor though. Unlike some other professors, he's quite intelligent. Sometimes hard to follow him.
Very difficult professor. Not willing to help. Tests are impossible even if you study. Only nice to students that speak up and demonstrate knowledge in class. Should retire already...
Good professor, just didn't like accounting, its a hard subject for me. He tries to make the class as interesting as possible. Tests are really hard, buy the book and do all the homework- you need as much practice with the problems as possible. I somehow scraped by with a B.
He expects you to have accounting knowledge prior to his class. He doesn't collect the homework. His tests are impossible. He picks a few favorites it seems, but they are the ones who speak up.
I just wasted my money taking this professor. Just when you think you understand what he is saying and the material the tests come and wam! you fail! Now thanks to him I will have to repeat the class, which is the first time I ever repeat a class or get a grade lower than a C in a course! Honestly take another professor and do yourself a favor.
He's not a bad teacher; he shares a lot of good information about the business world in general. However he's not the traditional teacher that holds your hand through every type of problem. Going to class AND doing the homework diligently will get you that A. He curves (adds lots of points) so I got an A :)
Tests are just "amazing". Good teacher!
Very interesting class and not too hard. However, the grading is random. His appearance is ridiculous and extremely arrogant. Doesn't show any respect and doesn't accept other opinions.
Valenzuela makes a nearly 4 hour long class seem way shorter! Definitely makes class interesting and topics relevant. As long as you come to class and do the homework, you should do well in the class. Exams are NOT m/c, but he adjusts grades. Doesn't teach out of the book, instead teaches using an easier to follow method. Definitely recomend!
You might not get the grade that you want, but he is a fantastic professor! (I received an A through hard work, but the class avg was poor). Highly recommended for Accounting 300B. He makes everything as easy to understand as a,b,c; 1,2,3; and do-re-mi. Exams are closely linked to homework assignments! He's awesome! And funny :)
Love this prof! Obvioisly knows what he's talking about and eager to share. He doesn't give you the answers but leads you there with his constant prompt of "why?". Only used the text for homework problems. One project, 3 midterms and a cummulative final. He isn't easy but you can bet you'll learn if you pay attention.
He is funny and know the material but when he go over the hw he is not the best. Im concern that he kind of change others student's minds to change thier mayors and many left the class at the end ...
While he seems intimidating at times, Valenzuela is a decent 300A teacher. As with most ACCT classes, expect the class to be hard. Unlike most professors, his exams are written test so they are definitely much harder. Final exam is cumulative. Attendance is not mandatory but is recommended (he tells you beforehand what is on the midterms)
Very straight forward instructor. DO THE HW AND EXTRA PROBLEMS --> Definitely helped with exams. READ THE BOOK! Semester project is very easy but time consuming. I'd definitely take him again if you want to learn something. If you're looking for an easy "A", you should probably take someone else. GOOD LUCK
He is fair. Do the hwk problems and extra problems assigned, especially the challenging ones. It will help you on the exam. His exams are written, no m/cs, no t/f. He's a tough grader and will deduct 5 pts for not following simple directions. He curves, sometimes. This is a tough class, don't expect an easy A. Can't withdraw class after 4 wks.
Very good professor. He is very straight forward. Do the Homework, attend and pay attention. Like others said, its hard to get an A in his classes. He is an accountant as a profession so he is very keen on accuracy in answers.
Somewhat confusing and hard-to-follow lectures, but he is a fair grader and tells you exactly what is on tests. I recommend him.
This class is definitely hard, cases require a LOT of time and effort (mine were 20 pg. each), the final is written and each question requires a small essay. For final study off the book, for case studies use lecture notes. He is a nice enough guy and he makes accounting interesting, he uses more real life examples instead of going off theory.
Very good professor. Uses real life examples, which really helped me to understand the material. Grades fairly, and if the class does poorly he will add points. Tells you what will be on the exam so that you can focus on what to study. I recommend him. Straight-forward class, although the project is a little ambiguous but you just have to analyze.
He's a pretty fun professor. He teaches accounting by going over examples with the class and makes sure that you're on the same page as him. He can get sarcastic, but overall. I REALLY RECOMMEND HIM. No multiple choice exams, but he does give partial credits. Really fair professor. Not the easiest nor the hardest.
He is very intimidating at first, but only in class. Four written exams makes this class a bit harder to study for. I got an A by reading the book and doing all the practice problems. There's also a long project that takes at least two weeks to complete. I would recommend if you want a challenge. If you want an easy class, don't take him.
Very intimidating, but if you take it seriously you will learn a lot. He teaches you things that pertain to accounting. He has a lot of experience in the industry. He will help you whenever you want! Take him!
by far the worst teacher Ive ever had, so sad how he encourages students to change their major just because it took him forever to pass his CPA exam. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
John Valenzuela is my favorite accounting professor. I also took him for ACCT300B two semesters ago. I have learned more about accounting and real life situations with him. His tests are challenging but can prove that you've actually learned this practice.
Professor stresses reading and doing extra problems. Yet, his exams are tailored the same way he does his notes. If you understand his notes, you'll do fairly well. No MC exams but does do partial credit. Save yourself time and enroll in another class if you ever feel his notes are confusing!
Be prepared to write case study analysis papers that are 20 pages long to get an A! There are 3 case studies. Writing 5-10 pages won't cut it. The 3 case studies are used as alternatives to exams. One stressful group project with one paper that requires 50-100 pages to write. Make sure to attend class to get participationattendance points. Hard!
Really didn't learn much about accounting... he tries to tell stories that are applicable but they end up just being a waste of your time. Tests are open ended questions and he takes points off for small errors. Theres also a pretty big project due at the end which he actually gave pretty much everyone who tried an A. I had to retake this class.
If you really want to learn and be a successful accounting professional then Valenzuela is your man. There are other professors who will give you a nice grade and move you along but Valenzuela will teach you. Great teacher, wish I had taken him for my other Acct classes.
Took for 300b and 400. 300b was very tough because there is so much material and problems are long. 400 is a lot easier. Tests are exactly like his lecture problems and all writted. no multiple choice. His classes are very hard, but if you pay attention and do extra problems you will do well on the tests. Take him if you want to be challeged!
best accounting prof I've ever had.. I learned more in the four months of 300B than I have in 3 years of college. He may come across as tough or mean, but he's NOT, he genuinely cares about the success and knowledge of his students. He is very thorough when explaining concepts and open to questions. TAKE HIM IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN
Professor Valenzuela is the best ACCT professor at CSULB. Extremely passionate, and wants the best for every student. Runs his own CPA office as well. 3 tests, semester project, and Final. no scantrons needed, all tests are handwritten. Extremely tough tests. Looking for an easy A, go elsewhere. Looking to LEARN ACCT, take Valenzuela.
Valenzuela is the best accounting professor at CSULB. He is a tough grader that gives difficult tests, but also provides some of the best instruction I have ever seen. He explains the topics clearly and gradually, so that everyone can follow. He explicitly tells you how you can do well in the class. I absolutely recommend this teacher!
He is okay. Goes kind of fast, but if you ask questions he will answer. You have to work really hard to get a passing grade if you are not good at accounting.
I had never failed a class before IN MY LIFE before this class. This instructor gives a long lecture one class, goes over the assigned hw next class, and then rinses and repeats until its time for his exam. His exams are the worst. Completely written, gives little room for error. You need to be a master at acct for his class. Gives 4 hard cases.
Professor Valenzuela is by far the best Accounting professors at CSULB. He is very clear about what to expect from the class, he brings many years of real world experience to the class, he does not take attendance but in order to pass you need to show up and be prepared. This class is hard but you learn, there are 4 cases which are difficult.
You can have a bargain purchase and goodwill on the same transaction, trust
He was ok. Each chapter, he goes over one long problem one class then the homework for the other. He likes using scare tactics and doesn't write on the board much. I had to teach myself for most of the course. He means well but definitely not the best professor at CSULB.
Advanced by itself was a challenging course, he made it 10x worse. Never answers questions directly and assumes everyone understands the material. Homework is very long and does not help for the exams. Would not recommend.
