Took VanDyke for 1101 and 1102. If you want to learn how to write a college essay, you definitely will. He's one of the best. But be ready to do some real work, no easy A's here.
He is a great teacher. He is hilarious. You can see he cares about his student thoughts and feelings. To pass his class you have to do his work, but he does not grade hard. He is always prepared for class. i learned how to write a real essay.
took 1101 online. VanDyke keeps things organized and gets stuff back to you quickly. if you do all the reading and follow his recommendations you can improve your writing, but it's not essential for passing the class.
It's a lot of work! There is a quiz every week and he requires loads of class participation. If he asks you a question and you get it wrong, he's condescending about it. I feel as though if English isn't your best subject, he just easily dismisses & forgets about you. Oh, and he's VERY picky when grading essays.
This class was a lot of work, but it wasn't too hard. If you stay on top of your work, follow the schedule he sets up, and write the essays (3), you'll do fine. I needed extra help with MLA and VanDyke was more than helpful.
Professor VanDyke's class is fair. After 10 weeks I'd say that I'm a better writer, but it took some work getting here!! Weekly reading quizzes (easy), weekly writing (easy but helpful), 3 essays, and a final exam on grammar/MLA. You can get an A if you work for it!
Not bad for a Lit class. Van Dyke knows what he's talking about and gives as much help as you need (WAY better than my 1101 prof, btw) Very funny too! The two analysis essays aren't bad, but the research paper is kinda hard. If you are good at writing about poetry, stories, etc. it's a pretty easy class.
Horrible. I took this class online and let me just say... HE OES NOT ANSWER EMAILS AT ALL. He uses two different websites to teach his class which is frustrating and confusing. He grades extremely hard to women, then gives no reply as to what you preformed wrong on the essay. BAD TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Prof VD is the best. Took him for 1101 and taking him again next semester for 1102. Almost everybody in my class is taking him again too.
Van Dyke is amazing. He actually make English class applicable to daily life. To the person who said he grades harshly on women, he doesn't. He grades very fairly, judging by your post, you are quite illiterate and deserved the grade you received.
if you have to take comp 1, look no further. VanDyke's class is interesting without being overwhelming. your writing skills will improve if you listen and do what you're supposed to.
Van Dyke makes poetry tolerable and he's hella funny. His is the only class I look forward to!
took vandyke for 1101 and can't believe i didn't take him for 1102... now i'm stuck with a BORING (but easy) prof. i think vandyke's class is worth the work you have to do to pass.
I have him this semester and he is sooooooooooo cute. :) His personality makes him even cuter. He is funny, and makes literature tolerable and easier to understand. I look forward to his class!
Good professor if you know how to write, if you're a slacker don't take this class because he will make you feel like you're not worthy. Been through it, he does show he cares for your improvement. Semi-hard, just try.
the short stories are fun to read and Vandyke makes you think about them. his class is a good mix of literature and writing, but its not an easy A. he's adorable too.
I did not one bit enjoy this class. Professor Van Dyke only liked hearing the input of those who were already in his class before. He made us write a research paper about a stupid short story which he stated wasn't due until finals and lied. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE. LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If you aren't a strong writer. He is a hard grader and his comments on the response make you feel stupid. I hated this class.
AMAZING! Professor Van Dyke was very clear and followed the syllabus exactly as it was handed out at the beginning of the semester. He challenged me to think about the materiel and encouraged us to look within ourselves to find our strengths and develop our own weaknesses. He gave honest feedback that was eye opening never but made me feel stupid
Great class! I never liked Lit. other than Dead Poets Society, but I learned so much from this class and surprisingly enjoyed the entire semester. Not sure why the bad ratings below, i found Mr. Van Dyke to be very clear on his expectations and provided honest feedback on our work to help his students improve accordingly.
I took this class only and this professor gave very clear instruction on due dates. It's an online class so it's basically a self taught class with feedback given on the final essay. I wish this professor offered an online class for 1102 this summer. I'd be sure to take it.
this class is definitely not for slackers, its a real college class. if you're looking for an easy A don't look here. the good news is that vandyke actually teaches you how to think analytically and preps you for the next level. so take somebody else unless you actually want to improve your writing.
He is a tough grader for sure, but he wants you to pass. He will help you and tell you what you need to improve. I'd always been a pretty strong writer but he was giving me rough grades, but after following what he told me to improve on he was giving me As on what I was writing.
it's an online class so it isn't too exciting. the professor answers emails fast and has everything set up week by week, so it's logical. don't care much about english, but this was a decent way to take the class.
He is a nice guy and wants his students to succeed but you have to put the work in. He will help you out a little but you have to work hard.
Worse professor in the world. He grades too harsh. Takes off too many points for mistakes. doesn't explain how to use the course site. effin horrible. quit your job.
Not the easiest course, but I did learn something researching the topics. Also learned how to write a decent essay (not the high school kind). The professor gives opportunities for extra credit that you should take advantage of. It will improve your writing and your grade.
Class was organized in weekly folders, and once you get used to the website it's pretty simple to figure everything out. Writing topics were sorta . . ., but the online tutor service helped my grade out alot!! Less time-consuming than a regular class works for me and the professor helps you when you need it. Must be organized to pass!!!
Van Dyke is okay. He does know what he's talking about and he does bring up legit points in specific aspects. However, in terms of understanding his thinking, if a student is not on the exact level of his thinking then be ready for cynical comments because he will not clarify anything. He is good in English, but ruins the creative atmosphere.
awesome professor!.
vandyke is great. If you make an effort to improve you'll do well and get the most out of his class. His feedback works. I understand how to write a good story (even though I'm not good at it), and I like reading more too.
It's an online writing class, so you have work independently and be motivated. Professor VanDyke provides opportunities for extra credit which also make your writing better. He clearly answered all my questions quickly and gave me a second chance to improve one of my essays. Would take for 1102 if he taught it.
He's a easy teacher just do your assignments.
He's an awesome professor but very strict. If you are looking for an easy A writing class, I would not recommend this class for you. When writing, he is very strict in the grading process and his writing assignments aren't easy but helped me become a much better writer.
Respected by students. Clear grading criteria.
Love VanDyke. Essay topics are as interesting as you want them to be. If you try something hard he's there to help. Just ask.
Online class was difficult to follow and oddly organized. I would not recommend taking this online class.
Great professor, there were no test or homework assigned to us. The class mainly helped us improved our writing skills and the essays he gives out are simple and easy. I would take the class again if I had too. I advise you to take his class.
Amazing. What to expect. Has 3 assigned essays, and 3 in-class essays. One group project and and individual presentation in the end of the semester. Fairly easy. He isn't bias and gives everyone a fair chance. In all, he is by far my favorite English teacher and the least sarcastic I've ever met.
Mr V is my favorite at HCC. Just wish I could take another class with him...
Professor VanDyke is awesome for creative writing. His feedback is the best, and he gives ideas for your work you will wish you'd thought of yourself. Also chooses great stories to read and makes talking about them fun and interesting! Will definitely take this class again for CRW II!
Van Dyke is the worst teacher I've ever had. He is incredibly unclear, and when you ask for guidance, he passes you off somewhere else. He is virtually nonexistent from his online class, he has you pay for a multitude of services that do the teaching for him, then even has you grade for him. He does not answer questions. He isn't a teacher.
Professor Van Dyke is a great professor. He's funny and makes English interesting. Lot's of writing, but he helps you if you're not that great at it. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
He was hands down the best teacher I ever took. He has very helpful and gave us great attention when needed. There is alot of quizes but so easy. Be ready to read it is a Lit class. I don't have any wrong things to say about him. Very great at grading.
I took Mr. V for English comp 1 for fall 2014. He was amazing, best English teacher I've had so far. He doesn't give much tests mainly in class essays. Not much homework. You have to expect some though your in college. As long as you come to class and do your homework you'll pass the class. If you put in a lot of work you'll deff. pass with an A.
Do your best to avoid this teacher .he is not clear and don't trust what he says he is not helpful or cooperative .If you take his online class he will ask for at least 3 places to do the work and you have to pay more than the class cost to do the work ,he is not a good teacher at all .avoid avoid avoid as possible
avoid avoid this teacher .he is not in the mood of teaching at all.
I took his online English Comp 1 class while I was duel enrolled in high school. Very helpful. He assigns homework that you have to have the textbook for but it isn't hard. He assigns 3 essays and there is no final. Amazing feedback and even allows you to explain what you would have done differently on a paper to improve your grade.
I've been out of school for over a decade and was incredibly nervous about taking this class. Thanks to Professor VanDyke's assignments and feedback I'm now confident about writing for other college classes. His course was clearly designed and set up so that you get out of it what you put into it.
His class is super easy. It's just a lot of writing but it's English class so it's expected. He seems to genuinely care about the lives of his students and if you think a due date isn't fair he might change it if you talk to him. He's also super funny and sarcastic and kind of hot.
He assigns 3 papers throughout the term, and around one online discussion post per week. He gives you tons of time to work on your paper, and will grade it for you in advance to make sure you can get an A. Super friendly guy, if you show up for class then you should do fine. I really enjoyed class, and signed up for his English Comp 2!
Great class! I was worried about what my English semester would hold for me, but Mr. VanDyke is very chill, helpful, and supportive in the work you do. Yes, you actually have to work and show up, but it's nothing that will kill you. 100% recommend! 3 essays, one small writing assignment almost every week as well as a few articles to read.
He's an awesome dude but a tough grader. he gives you 1 reading quiz a week followed by about 3 weekly online quizzes and a weekly discussion. He is a tough grader but he gives you a change for extra credit. He's an okay teacher and i would defiantly would not take his class again.
Hes not very helpful
Throughout the course you write the three essays, take weekly grammar quizzes, and answer discussion questions. The work itself is really easy so that's nice. He is also a creative writing teacher, so just keep in mind to incorporate a lot of original thought in all the writing for the class and you will have your A!
Great Professor, assigns 3 slightly difficult essays but will help if you ask. Basically gives you a B if you do all the Discussion posts and grammar quizzes and do mediocre on the essays.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! Literally the absolute worst professor I've ever had! He is sarcastic and does not care about his students grades at all. My grade dropped from an A in the class to a C in the last week of the semester . AVOID VAN DYKE AT ALL COST!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
He is a horrible professor. Absolutely horrible. He's a very tough grader and makes students feel like horrible writers.
I had a B+ in his class and he Failed me out of the class on the last week of the semester because he said that I plagiarized on an essay even though i had a works cited page.. made absolutely no sense. WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Do not take his class unless you want to waste your time.
He is an okay professor but i defiantly wont take him again. My grade dropped from an A to a C in, he grades really harsh on essays and he doesn't help you when you need it he basically writes on the board don't ask me for help. he gives you annoying class discussions and useless quizzes due every week.
Van Dyke doesnt give you help he will either refer you to the writing center or a student to help you even on the board in class said " don't ask me for help" the only time he will help you is during office hours. He grade really harsh on essays, i worked hard on one essay and used all criteria he asked for and he gave me a c, he gives online work.
There's just too much homework assigned throughout the week consisting of reading an article with online quizzes and written group discussions. Has unrealistic requirements to fit only on 3 pages for essays. Even with all high grades on essays, low grades/0's on quizzes/discussions will hurt overall grade tremendously. *Doesn't take any excuses.
Professor Van Dyke is a great teacher. He set up days where we could work on essays in class and he would give us feedback and days where we'd get peer feedback. The essays were tough but doable. However, I wasn't a big fan of the online discussion post or the grammar quizzes. If you make a valid effort you should do just fine in the class.
Basically everyone on here who says he's too tough are just lazy. Go to class, do your work, and you'll pass. He gives you nearly a month for just 1 essay and gives you multiple opportunities for revision from himself. A closed mouth won't get fed, If you don't say you need help he's going to assume you know what you're doing. He was great.
If you are just going for a 2 year degree or not a good writer, this might not be the class for you. There are no essays about family members, sports teams, or theme parks. Instead, you learn how to write REAL college essays about relevant topics that are sort of interesting. Do all work and attend class to pass, write good essays for B or A.
Oh boy, where do I even begin? Van Dyke is by far the rudest professor I've ever had. He favors the people who had him in 1101 over the new people. His feedback is so harsh that it makes you look stupid. He's just not a friendly guy. Don't make the mistake I did and take someone else for ENC 1102.
Van Dyke's class was great. 4 short papers based on short stories and one play for the midterm essay. Assigns two longer papers (story analysis and film research paper) that he gives you more than enough time to work on, and he'll answer ANY questions you have . Also gives real feedback, not just grades. Recommend if you want to improve writing.
The best professor ever. His class is not easy if you are not good in writing but he will help you with everything that you need. If he is mean to you is because he a ready give you so many chances. His textbook is cheap and easy to understand. I learn more in two semesters with him than in four years of high school. He is absolute the best.
online class easy to follow. set up by weeks, so there's no reason to get confused. there is a lot of writing, but it isn't too difficult, and most of the topics are fun and challenging. does get harder toward the end though. the best thing is vandyke responds quickly to email and stays in touch with group messages. good for an online class.
Great online class! Lots of writing, but also lots of variety. Really like peer review and reflections to boost essay grade. Prof gives good feedback on essays and answers emails fast. Essays def get harder toward the end but it's the only work to do in the last couple weeks. Just be sure to keep your average high at the beginning of the class.
Great class, easy to follow. Essays get harder but they all have peer review and a reflection as part of the grade. Do all the work for a B/C, work hard and use ALL the extra credit for an A!
I recommend this online class. Mr. VanDyke makes comments on rough drafts that tell you exactly what you need to do to get a better essay grade. He also explains everything clearly. You have to do 4 peer reviews for each essay. They are sometimes tedious but sometimes super helpful. I'd take him for ENC 1102 if it was available.
some assignment postings didn't show up online.
Super chill. He's a tough grader but he definitely pushes you to do your very best. You learn a lot from him and I would totally take one of his classes again.
took him for ENC1101 online. Assignments due Friday/Sunday of every week. Answers emails quickly and helps a lot. There are 4 essays and super clear instructions, he clarifies everything and grades fast. Offers up to 10 pts EC for every essay. If you know basic grammar rules & can write a solid essay, youll do great. Would definitely take him again
Awesome teacher! Very witty. If u do your homework and do what is asked of you, you will pass. He is very helpful and encouraging. He made me a better writer.
Prof V is the one to take if you're ready to grow up and stop writing like a high school student. HCC's best for sure!!
He's a great professor. There's a hefty amount of papers, all about a month apart, but he gives you plenty of time and will give you extra help if needed. Tad bit sarcastic but he's hot as hell. I would definitely take one of his classes again!
Need to be more clear,
Professor VanDyke is a tough, yet fair instructor. He covers an amazing amount of ground in just a few short months. I sincerely believe I have become a stronger writer because of him.
I loved Professor Van Dyke. I love writing and he helped me to be a better writer. His critiques are excellent and I really enjoyed the group work. I took Creative Writing--DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT LIKE TO WRITE. It is all writing, so take all of your English classes first, or you will be struggling. Class participation is a must--
Great teacher, you learn a lot. The class isn't too hard, just stay on top of assignments that are due and you'll be fine. Ask for feedback on essays before they are do and you'll be sure to get an A. There is online homework, and minimal reading from the book. Overall, it is not a heavy class, and as long as you make an effort, you'll pass.
Great for a lit class; equal amounts of reading & writing. The research paper isn't bad; apply a critical perspective to a movie you choose, and Vandyke has clear directions that make it an ok assignment. Extra credit opportunities can boost your grade if you do ALL your work and show up EVERYDAY so you don't miss them. Wish I'd taken him for 1101.
Grading criteria were very clear. There are 4 essays over the term, and a few homework and discussion assignments. Professor Van Dyke gives you the opportunity to have your essays reviewed, and then you are able to revise before submitting the final product. I wish he were teaching ENG1102, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
He was always willing to help as long as you were willing to put in the work. I would definitely take this class again!
Professor VanDyke makes you work for your grade. If you want anything above a C be ready to put some effort in to writing and formatting his essays.
Mr. Van Dyke is a great teacher. He gives intentional and supportive feedback on every paper, strongly encourages speaking up and participating in class, and really wants to teach his students about the practical importance of good writing skills. There is no busy work, and if you really pay attention, you'll learn more than just writing in here.
I took this class based on the reviews. But I got no real feedback from the teacher. He grades very tough. I would never take his class again.
I took his class as a dual enrollment student. I took it online. Be aware that once you submit your revised essay to him he will pick out every single grammatical error you provided. So be VERY careful. He does read your peer mark essay and gives great feedback! I had a problem on the very last assignment and he was very understanding! Would take!
challenging yet rewarding class. Be ready to work for your grade if you want an A. He's very tough on grading but it makes you a better writer. also responds to emails pretty fast and answers any questions you might have.
Mr V is pretty funny and relaxed. He gives a lot of class time to work on essays and helps people who are prepared. He expects high level work though and encourages original thinking. Also gives extra credit, so come to class every day if you want an A. Class is ok, prof is cool.
Professor VanDyke's CRW class is great for people who enjoy writing and talking about each other's work. He is VERY accommodating and encouraging to those who take the class seriously (but he is neither of those things for students who do not, so be warned). Class story workshops really allow for creative and sometimes hilarious dialogue.
I took Mr Van Dyke's ENC 1101 online during the summer ('17). I waited to give this review so I could compare it to ENC 1102 online. Van Dyke wins! While he is strict, you have a greater appreciation for his high standards. His assignments are clear and he is very thorough. He is communicative throughout the entire semester.
This class isn't easy and taking it online won't make it easier. The allotted time given for each essay means you really need to knock it out of the park. This teacher has very high expectations for his students and wants to see you put in a considerable amount of work. With that being said, Professor Van Dyke has a good heart yet a sharp tongue.
Be ready to do your work because this class is NOT easy. He actually reads your work and lets you know how to improve. It's a real college class where your work gets the grade, so don't think just submitting whatever you want will fool him.
Creative Writing was an elective with JVD. First day he was open and transparent about the expectations of each student in the class. We had papers that grew in length as the semester went on and prompted journal entries. Feedback was given as an open discussion; he also included his own written feedback on each paper. Cool, calm & show upA.
Very organized class. Assignments explained in detail. Read and analyze short stories, write a paper about a play. He gives you a lot of help if you ask questions about the work. Would definitely take again.
Van Dyke is an amazing professor. You really just have to work for your grade. He has high expectations; so try to be on the good side of these. Read the stories because there are quizzes that will impact your grade later. If you love to analysis, this is your class! Make sure to express your gift.
he is a tough grader, knows his stuff & has high expectations. you must earn your grade. cool thing is, he gives 2 opportunities for extra credit. he is very thorough but very accessible. he will answer questions you have and make things easy to understand... simply reach out! i only won't take him again bc I just met my ENG requirements :)
I'm a lit major at USF, and soooo glad I took Mr. V for comp and lit at HCC. If you pay attention in class and complete the assignments, you will get a lot out of his classes.
While personble and apporchable his teaching style leaves much to be desired. Rather than actually teach any technical skills or teach really anything at all most of the class is spent critquing and being critical of classmates writing. Most of the entire semester is spent insulting classmates writing rather than actually learning.
Professor Van Dyke is an overall great teacher. I took his class online and it was challenging but, with purpose. I had a couple of questions, and when he wrote back he seemed harsh. But, as I continued doing work with excellence, I can tell that he isn't mean he just wants his students to succeed. I'd take him again if I could.
Professor Van Dyke is an amazing professor! He makes you work for your grade. Honestly, I can say that I have become a much better writer after taking his class. Please do not wait to the last minute to do any assignments, he will not allow anything to just be submitted.
He does not communicate with the student. Is not helpful with any questions you ask of him. Will blame you for having not understanding what is going on if you ask questions. I had to buy the book twice (one online and hard copy) because he gets all of his assignments from the hard copy text book but never stated that in the syllabus.
His instructions were unclear and had to be deciphered. The software used does not work, so for a quiz that should take less then 10 minutes becomes about 30 minutes of refreshing and reloading the page.
Gave no feedback and was extremely rude. Failed to explain anything! You have to buy a textbook and an online textbook. He gives assignments through the online textbook and gives other homework through the physical textbook which HE FAILED TO MENTION! After searching forever for the homework I had to drop the class. I have never dropped a class.
Glad I took this professor online, hes a really harsh grader. Youll get 100 just for doing a discussion post but on the big grades like an essay hell flat out give you a 0 for missing one part of anything, even if you did all the work and turned it in with time to spare. I completely took him for his rating on here and it was a mistake.
BEST English teacher I've EVER HAD! Really nice and accessible. Gives amazing feedback on essays, and REALLY wants to see you grow as a student. Learned so many writing skills from his class. We had 3 essay assignments and Midterm+Final. Gives extra credit opportunities for all 3 essays. Makes English a cool class. Will definitely take again.
I'm sooo happy i took VanDyke! If you stay on schedule and follow the essay requirements there's no reason to get anything less than a B. I had questions about the essays and he responded quickly, and was a lot of help. Definitely taking him for 1102!!
Two big papers and a couple in class essays. Pretty easy going but you have to stay on top of the work. If you go to the writing center four+ times you're exempt from the exam, which is an in class essay. At the beginning of the semester we did read and analyze stories a lot, so it is important to have a textbook and time to read.
This is my 2nd class with VD and he has really helped to develop my writing. This class has two major papers Literary Analysis on a short story of your choosing & Final paper is on Death of a Salesman. Small writing assignments to prep for papers. HW done through Mindtap, fairly easy and self-guided. Great if you can handle constructive criticism.
I took him years ago in 2014 but I still reflect on what a great experience I had in his class! The material was very suitable for anyone first getting into college and trying to build a solid foundation to succeed. Even if English isnt your strongest suit, he gives lots of opportunities and guidance bcuz he cares. Def take his class!!
Professor Van Dyke was an amazing professor for my online ENC1101 class. I took this class through dual enrollment, and he did an amazing job with making me feel like a college student. He is very helpful and usually responds to emails very quickly. He is very sepcific on what he wants in his essays and gives detailed feedback.
He is the worst! Changes grades and weight of assignments last minute. Terrible communication. Never take his class.
I am taking Professor VanDyke's online 1102 class after taking 1101. I know that i have become a much better writer as a result. His assignments can improve your skills IF you work hard. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions because he always responds quickly to clear up any confusion. Follow his recommendations & suggestions for best results!
Course is set up so ANYONE can pass just by coming to class and doing the work thats assigned. It has lots of group work and conferences that make you stay on top of what you have to do. Literally a great class for anyone not great at writing who wants to improve.
Taking ENC-1101? You'd be an absolute nut not to take Van Dykes class. He's fantastic. Clear expectations, responsive, and fair. He' s the best that HCC has to offer. Take his course, you will not regret it! :-)
I took Professor Van Dyke for both ENC1101 and ENC1102. The essays can be challenging but the instructions are clear as day. It's not impossible to pass if you put the effort and ask questions. Be ready to read and use the book. He gives extra credit for going to the writing lab and is a very fair grader.
Great for an online english class. Vandyke makes sure you know what you have to do when you have to do it. Always answers questions fast, just ask!
I took Professor VanDyke for 1101 and 1102 online. He is a GREAT professor that wants you to be creative with your thinking/writing!! I'm a much better writer after taking his classes and would def take him again if I could. Highly recommended!! Oh, and don't forget to get the extra credit for each essay!
I took both English classes with Professor VanDyke, and they were the best. I never really liked writing, but he makes the work interesting if you are willing to read and follow directions. If you have questions, just ask! VanDyke will always help you if you ask.
Great English class!! I already signed up for his 1102 . Not too hard if you keep up but this was a ten week course so... :)
This class was so much fun to take. Professor Van Dyke clearly cares about his students and gives great feedback. I look forward to taking 1102 with him next semester.
I usually do not put up reviews but had to do for this professor. Professor Van Dyke is a knowledgeable person but is a very tough grader. There is absolutely no chance of improving your grade and he expects a lot from students. He expects master level knowledge of the subject from students. He is also a very tough grade.
Thought he was going to be a good professor.... I was wrong. Will give you 50/60s for wrong spacing and formatting and not understanding.
Stay on top of your work and this class is not hard. Questions about anything? Just ask!! He always responds fast and with detailed ideas. Im taking Professor vandyke for 1102!
I took Mr. VanDyke online last semester & he was an amazing teacher! I personally recommend him! It's an easy class if just follow his rubric & do your assignments. He gives well-written feedback on all your assignments & replies as soon as possible.
Great professor in every way imaginable!!! Whats not to love about this guy!
Professor VanDyke isnt the easiest but he IS fair and gives great feedback. He answers questions fast and makes getting a good grade worth the effort!
Mr VanDyke has the online class set up easy to follow. You do a lot of grammar exercises (self paced). A weekly discussion on readings that lead up to each essay and there are 3 of them. You also do 4 peer reviews for each essay. Class can be an easy A if you just follow directions and complete EVERY assignment because he wont take late work.
Van Dyke was an excellent ENC teacher. He graded very fairly and the workload was extremely light. I easily got an A in both ENC 1101 and 1102. You will also get an A if you just do the work. I would recommend this professor to anybody looking for a fair teacher that gives the grades you deserve.
This class, in-itself, does not a heavy work-load, besides the homework. However, this isn't even the professor's choice, but instead the class setup. The professor himself replies very little information in your e-mail correspondence. Furthermore, he decides that you can not write much more than what is the minimum requirement by the essay itself.
If there is a better professor out there take them, the work is easy for online Ive heard its worse in person. But he makes things due on weekends which sucks for students who have PART TIME JOBS. So please for your sanity, take someone else especially if you have a social or work life
His teaching method is not the best. Grades heavy and is not understanding at all.
He gave almost 83 assignments to do within an impossible amount of time. He was rude and unhelpful with information about the class.
Theres a lot of work but it can make you a better writer. do NOT procrastinate!! Essays take time but are easy As if u follow directions and get the extra credit. I'm taking him for 1102.
Very harsh grading. A lot of work to do that probably isn't practical. Gonna get a good grade on an essay, think again.
Not very helpful with his criticism.
He’s really a great teacher for HCC! If you ask for help or go to his office with questions he’s super nice and replied fast. His comments and help will make your essay WAY better!
No matter what you have to put in time and effort with this class. If you do, it’s not hard, but it’s a lot. But you will definitely learn more about writing and get way better at it. Always answers emails quickly too
Grades ridiculously hard. I asked him for recommendations on my essay as well as submitting my essay to two online tutors. Followed all of their advice and still some how got a c. Plz select someone else if you have a choice
I asked multiple times for feedback which he says he gives but never actually put any comments on my papers. He doesn't provide educational content, only writing prompts for assignments with vague rubrics. Does not make effort to accommodate students who need extra help or are having medical issues.
Does not provide any valuable feedback nor teach. Gives out random grades and does not care- take someone else.
The worst decision was taking his class.he doesn't have a good grading rubric everything is vague.he picks favorites and doesn't accept late work.don't take his class
I took Vandyke two semesters and tbh these bad reviews don't really surprise me. A lot of students in my classes wrote like middleschoolers on discussions and essay peer reviews. Others obviously struggle to write at all in English. If you're not ready to be in college, don't take this class. If you are it's a great choice!
This class is a good choice. His workload is manageable and fair. Essays easy to get an A on if you use the course documents and earn extra credit. Answers questions fast too. Already signed up for his 1102.
Professor Van Dyke is great, and he grades very fairly. I do not think he is a tough grader; sometimes he wants you to think out of the box and develop your critical thinking by challenging yourself a little bit in essays. All his activities help you become a better and more professional writer.
Even after taking English classes for 12 years, I found Mr. Van Dyke's course was properly fun, and I still learned quite a bit. The essays are the bulk of the grade, and he grades them fairly, with a very clear rubric. You almost can't mess it up. There is a good amount of homework, but manageable. HW is done in a required digital book (must pay).
The grading on the papers is definitely not for a Comp 1 class, he expects you to know everything before you're taught, which in turn made my comp 2 class a million times harder. Don't take his class!
Honestly loved his class and in my opinion, he grades fairly. He always replied quickly and answered all my questions. As long as you don't procrastinate and keep a good schedule you can do assignments very easily. I highly recommend his class.
If you still write your essays like a high schooler this class isn't for you. He makes you think and uses essays to get you to use you imagination and be more creative. He hardly lectures, gives decent amount of homework but essays are how you maintain a good grade in his class. He is very helpful outside of the class room.
Professor Van Dyke, is great! He gives plenty of opportunities to earn extra credit on your essays. If you participate in the discussion posts and peer reviews they are easy 100s which will save you later if you don't do well on the essays.
Very straightforward class. Good communication from Professor. Work gets harder later so keep your grades high BEFORE that happens. There are assignments where you work with other students that can be good or bad depending on random selections.
Not the easiest but probably the best. Sign up, show up, do the work, get smarter. Pretty simple.
An amazing professor. His class can be challenging at times, but he lays out clear grading expectations and provides many opportunities for extra credit. I can definitively say that my writing has greatly improved after taking both 1101 and 1102 with him. The class is interesting and he is a friendly character. Would highly recommend.
English should be a very straightforward subject but he made it very difficult to get a good grade in his class. There are very few assignments that are all very heavily weighted, he is not interested in helping you understand the class or explaining the material and does not give extensions for any assignment unless it suits him.
Professor Van Dyke doesn't use a word count with his essays, instead he uses page numbers. Essay's are also worth a heavy amount of your final grade. So when he wants two pages, he means two FULL pages. I learned this the hard way when I ended up writing one and a half pages and he gave me a 0 despite having hit all of the other requirements.
Great classes from a great professor!! His essay assignments are great if you are okay taking chances and learn from feedback. He lets you write about whatever you want (sort of) which means it's up to YOU to make the class a good experience. If you are a creative thinker/writer, you WONT be disappointed!! :)
Papers are very irrelevant and odd. Everything is based on short stories. For the final paper, you are expected to write a lengthy paper and are limited to VERY minimal sources to use. These sources are super hard to tie into the paper. Just overall would not recommend this professor to anybody.
Professor Van Dyke is a good teacher, but he grades harshly and expects you to interpret things the way he wants it to be interpreted.
Amazing, caring, and very knowledgeable professor. He does not give a lot of work whatsoever, but there are 3 essays. The essays were not difficult though if planned accordingly, and there's an extra credit opportunity for each as well.
Very good class overall
Didn't have much of a hard time.
His class is great if you're taking it online. He doesn't make his quizzes hard at all. I didn't get to interact with him too much (if not at all). Beware of essays. They aren't hard, but, he has a certain standard.
The class was fairly easy and concise on how grading worked. 10/10 would recommend.
This professor made ENC 1101 and 1102 the worst classes ever. He doesn't interact with the class at all other than weekly orders, then acts like he was with us this whole time. I don't know what teacher these other guys took. But I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. You're better off with anyone else. Listen to people that actually care.
Please for the absolute love of god DO NOT take his class. Grading is harsh and seems random, with points deducted for unclear reasons. He rarely respond to emails, offering no help or guidance. Prepare for an excessive workload without any support or clarity. Avoid this professor!!! He is also really sassy!
His grading was very harsh and random points where taken off for no reason
Great choice for an online writing class. Directions and grading are clear and theres extra credit for each essay so it's impossible to not get an A if you want to. Taking him for 1102 right now!
I took both ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 with As on all my essays and writing exactly the same way I was in his class.
Professor Van Dykes class was a joke
Easily the worst professor I have ever taken. His class was a joke. I got a 0 on my essay because he didn't like the topic I picked. It's his fault for giving us such a limited list with very boring topics. Never take this class, that's a warning for your on self good.
If you show up prepared and do all your work, Mr. V. will help you as much as possible. Between his feedback in workshop and extra credit anyone can get an A.
Professor VanDyke's online 1102 isn't too hard. If you like reading short stories and doing in-depth analysis it's a good choice. Best of all, Prof VanDyke gives lots of encouraging feedback, especially if you ask him for help. The more time you spend writing, the more feedback you get, the better your grade is. I wish I'd taken him for 1101.
If you enjoy writing, this man is the one for you. He is a heavy grader. There are three main papers in the course. The man is a different type of professor. I would not take his class ever again.
He replies to questions right away which is great. He also pushes students to do their very best so if you arent ready for a real college experience you might look somewhere else. 100% recommended.
He is an excellent professor of English. Everything is straightforward and easy to follow for each week. communication is good and he allows flexibility with essay topics so if you do not like what you write about thats on you haha. Gives good feedback and is fair because what you get from it is what you put into it.
got a 50 on my first essay because I was a couple of lines of the page limit. Overall hard grader but makes his requirements very clear and you have the opportunity to get 10 points of extra credit on every essay. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. 60% of grade is essays. Was kind of accessible but had no virtual office hours, only email.
This class and professor have to be the worst combination known to mankind.
getting an A takes effort but if you follow directions and get extra credit its not too hard. DO NOT wait to the last minute to write the essays!!!
Not a cookiecutter course. Mr. V gives lots of options to make your own decisions. Having said that to get the most out of his style means you have to read and write on his syllabus schedule. Also helps to be ready for class workshops. If you do that and go to office hours you will definitely get a B and probably an A if you get the extra credit.
Great professor he made it impossible to fail and he was very willing to work with as long as he saw that you were putting in the work for the class
his online distance learning was super flexible, and i was able to get everything done throughout the week with no stress, especially as a dual enrollment student. his feedback on essays were also really clear and helpful; i feel like this class helped me improve as a writer outside the classroom. probably the best prof at hcc i've had!!
super helpful class and professor. just make a schedule to stay on top of everything. His summer course was short so there were some busy weeks but its definitely not hard, just helpful. definitely feel prepared for writing more now than before lol.
I want you to read very carefully, do NOT choose this professor. I have no idea how he got any good reviews because he is actually the rudest teacher i have ever met. Do not attempt to ask him any questions or to double check any assignments you have done . Theres a paper you need done pretty much every week and he assigns weekend homework.
VanDyke's 8 week 1101 class has been awesome. His requirements are very clear and make it possible for anyone to get a good grade. As a HS student, I believe his essays are a good transition to college writing; I have learned and practiced skills that'll be needed in the future. His suggestions and feedback are encouraging. Can't miss with him!
if you like reading short stories about a WIDE range of things this class is for you. Stories can be interesting even when you don't necessarily like them (if that makes sense...) Each week you have a story quiz or two and 5 discussion posts for each story with an essay at the end of the course. Def recommended for readers
If writing isn't your strong suit, don't take this class. Professor Van Dyke is a very tough grader and expects near perfection to get a good grade. On top of the high expectations, he is not very personable. While getting in contact was quick and easy, he lacked the mannerisms of a professor who is rooting for student success.
I took the summer course that is
Not a hard class but what you need to know is that he does NOT give credit for partially complete work. He also expects you to read his feedback because thats where he tells you how to make your work better. His grades are earned & not given - it makes you a better writer. Get the extra credit on his essays!
Really great class. It is a lot of reading, but as long as you read and submit the discussion posts on time you will succeed. It is also important to make sure you read the syllabus and are aware of the requirements for a good grade. I would recommend LIT 2000 to anyone!
Professor Van Dyke runs a well-organized online class. With clear instructions and extra credit opportunities, an A is achievable if you engage with the course material. The Unstuck study tool was a big help for essay prep.
This professor's class will make you a better writer. He's available when you need help and his feedback makes it impossible not to write good essays that also earn good grades.
This professor is very strict about grading. he told me my topic was approved and then once graded said he never approved it so it failed me
You have quizzes (that you can take up to 3 times for a better grade) and a discussion board (Don't have to reply to other students) every week. Theres a total of 3 essay and they are fairly easy since he gives you exactly what you need to know to do them. Class isn't hard at all you just need to keep up with your work.
very rude and stubborn not flexible and or understanding at all
He lets you know the requirements and expectations at the beginning and you sign off on them. So if you follow the rules and do what you said then it isnt a hard class, but it does require maturity.
I had him for summer, he answered back quick and useful. Read his syllabus and weekly messages, he put what he needs on assignments and due dates. Peer review was anonymous and fun. 3 essays + tons of quizzes due every friday + 300 words discussion[analyze essay+reply 1 post ] + 30 extra credits UpSwing
Gave a poor grade on a sizable essay and hid my corresponding rubric, which leads me to believe my submission was not processed at all. "Feedback" received at top of paper seemed very general/"copy-pasted" which was another big red flag. Reads overly unprofessional/rude at times and possibly does not give genuine grades. Highly would not recommend.
Best feedback ever to make your writing better. His short stories are low stress assignments and okay to read.
This class was very easy to do, he did assign quite a bit of homework, but they are very easy to do. He gives good feedback on essays and allows you to get extra credit for them. He also gives students ways to be exempt from the final exam.
I took him for 1101 and 1102. Great prof imo. There is homework and discussions but they aren't hard. The essays are more challenging but if you follow his comments on your drafts they make you a good write. He answers questions fast and will help you during office hours.
Professor Van Dyke is great. He has about 2-3 essays due during the entire semester. Quizzes and discussion posts are mainly his thing. For essays he grades holistically and you must do requirements. there are no if ands or buts about your grade. Unless you truly felt like you did not deserve it. I finished with a B- due to 60/100 on last essay.
This is a workshop style class. I really recommend this class is very helpful and it's all set up for you to pass with lots of amazing feedback and takes the time to help everyone individually. I would really recommend this class.
Worst teacher, I advise you to stay away
Recently we did a paper and he provided sources from these databases and said the ones I got werent from the database (which they were), he failed me on a paper bc he said it was ai generated and also it wasn't properly written so he would not change the grade Had so many problems with this professor wont take him again!
Class is ok for being english which means a lot of reading and writing. Quizzes and discussions are not hard but they will take time if you do them right lol. Professor VanDyke helped me with teh essay to make sure my cites were done the right way and it boosted my grade!
Pretty good professor, quick quizzes that may seem like a lot but really can be done fast. Discussion post every week is easy. Anyone saying he's a "tough grader" just didn't follow the easy rubric given lol. Just follow what he says and you'll finish with great grade.
Mr. Van Dyke is a bit rigid on his rubrics for essays. He can be tough on grading, deducting large amounts of points for something such as empty lines. However, he is also very clear on the guidelines of how the essays should be. He was very communicative and responded to emails promptly .I would register for another class with him if I could!
The work is easy, but essays are a major part of the grade and if you take online classes, he is very confusing with his details of the essay because he simply has to many guidelines and doesn't explain properly enough. Also, if you work a full-time job don't commit to his class because he doesn't care about your personal matters.
This was one of my favorite professors; he's humorous, has clear instructions, lots of group activities in class, and gives extra credit on the essay if you go to tutoring; the midterm was done at the computer lab, which made it easy. The final exam is exempt for students who have an A or for those who have attended enough tutoring sessions.
This was the only class I didn't pass during my time at HCC I do not recommend AT ALL!!!
Gave me a 69.4 on purpose knowing that I would not get the credit what a horrible teacher
This is the only class i failed because he did not give a proper feedback of my thesis! horrible teacher
he's a great professor! Everything is set up when the class starts and he answers questions right away. 3 chances for homework assignments, extra credit on essays. He gives feedback on essay rough drafts so follow what he says AND get the extra credit & there is literally no reason you can't get an A!
Love this class and working in groups. Mr. V gives great feed back and advise for how to make your essay the best!
Professor Van Dyke was my favorite prof I had for this semester, and liked his teaching so much that I'm taking him for my Eng Comp II class next semester. He has high standards and can be a tough grader, but he finds a way to make time for every student wanting to succeed. Do the work on time and put in actual effort and you'll be fine.
He was pretty chill and has interesting topics for the essays but he grades very harshly. Extra credit options are available. Exams are pretty easy.
This is one of the most unhelpful and inflexible professors I've ever taken! He gives absolutely zero chances to reopen assignments even if you miss a deadline by accident or have real responsibilities outside of school. There is no understanding, no compassion, and no willingness to work with students who are trying their best.
He doesn't give any feedback whatsoever. His assignments are easy, but he does assign a lot of them. He doesn't give feedback for revisions, and the median for the class was a 50. All the small assignments are worth 5-10 points, but no matter if you do all of them and get a bad grade on an essay, your grade will be tanked
Honestly, not a bad teacher at all. Lots of work to do weekly (Average: 3-5 assignments), but if you keep up and do them on time, you should be fine! Definitely funny.
Professor's class will make you a better writer and he does assign better than average topics. Classes can be fun if you find good people to do the workshops with. Taking again for 1102.
